Looking to get away for a weekend? Well, you’re in luck: there are so many incredible weekend getaways in the USA!

The more we travel in our home country, the more we appreciate how its enormous size and incredible diversity mean that city breaks in the United States can cover just about any interest.

Want to lay out on one of the best urban beaches in the world, drink craft beer, attend an unforgettable festival, go hiking, hit a casino, or simply experience some of the most iconic tourist sites in the world in quick succession?

No matter what you like to do, there’s an American city (or six) for that.

Here are 15 of the best cities for weekend getaways in the USA.

New Orleans

It’s often said that there’s nowhere like New Orleans–and that is completely true.

Spending a weekend in New Orleans ( or even a single day ) means lots of jazz, lots of delicious food (gumbo, beignets, po’ boys, muffulettas, and more–oh my!), and lots of good times.

Be sure to make time for a ghost tour to take a look at the more mystical part of the city (even if you’re not the superstitious type, I promise a ghost tour is worth it in NOLA!), and a bayou tour to check out southern Louisiana’s incredible landscape.

And, while it’s easy to have nothing but good times in New Orleans, you can (and arguably should) add more depth to your trip as well: consider a day trip out to somewhere like the Whitney Plantation to learn a bit about NOLA’s dark past, or even a Katrina-themed tour discussing the serious impacts of the 2005 hurricane.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

  • Best Western Plus French Quarter Landmark Hotel : The hotel itself is beautiful in that classic New Orleans way, and the (included) breakfast is varied and tasty. Best of all, this hotel is situated right on the edge of the French Quarter, meaning that all of the French Quarter and some areas beyond are within easy walking distance.
  • Omni Royal Orleans Hotel : Located in the heart of the French Quarter, this beautiful hotel is known for its gorgeous building, attentive service, and lovely ambiance–plus its ghosts. Yeah, that attentive service? It just may come in the form of the ghost maid who likes to tuck guests in at night!

Romantic Getaways in USA: Jackson Square New Orleans

If you’re hoping to soak up some fun in the sun during your USA weekend getaway, look no further than Miami.

South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree!

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though: be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning a trip out to the Everglades–or if you have a few extra days, road-tripping your way all the way to Key West , the southernmost point in the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

  • Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
  • The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Dripping with Spanish moss and home to one of the most stunningly beautiful historic centers of any city in the United States, Savannah is the perfect place to head for a weekend trip : not too big, not too small, and positively packed with some of the best southern food you could ever hope to find.

Come here to wander through all 22 of Savannah’s remaining town squares, tour a house museum or two, pay a visit to Forsyth Park, and to wander along gorgeous Jones Street.

Shoppers will love all the boutiques on Broughton Street, River Street, and in City Market, and those looking to indulge their taste buds will find limitless incredible food in Savannah , from classic southern meals at the Olde Pink House to tasty ice cream at Leopold’s.

If you’re a former Girl Scout like me, or just interested in their history, be sure to also pay a visit to the home of the organization’s founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
  • Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

The Best Things to Do in Savannah: Fountain in Square

Of all of the weekend getaways in the USA covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate, plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well, and there are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting.

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors. Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States, it’s a sight not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

  • The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Home to country music, hot chicken, street art, and plenty of barbecue, there’s no doubt that Nashville, Tennessee is an excellent place to let the good times roll on your weekend away.

While Nashville is extremely popular as a bachelorette party destination and for other girls’ getaways, large groups are far from the only types of travelers who will enjoy a weekend in Music City, USA.

The best places to visit in Nashville include visiting the Grand Ole Opry (both for the show and for the backstage tour!), checking out the Johnny Cash Museum, seeing the Country Music Hall of Fame, and exploring Gulch, the street art neighborhood home to, among many other things, the #instagramfamous Nashville wings.

Be sure to save some time to enjoy the city’s famous nightlife when exploring the best things to do in Nashville . Its tasty food is also an important ingredient on any Nashville bucket list –be sure to try the hot chicken at least once, but be aware of your heat tolerance before ordering!

Where to Stay in Nashville

  • Virgin Hotels: Part of the Virgin Group and with all the luxury details you might expect, with plenty of red and white details.

Located just a couple of hours north of Savannah, Charleston shares a lot of similarities with its neighbor to the south: fantastic southern food, Spanish moss dripping from the trees, beautiful architecture, lots of history to uncover–but it absolutely has its own distinct personality as well.

Be sure to visit the beautiful and photogenic Rainbow Row, check out the tea-making process at the Charleston Tea Plantation, visit the gorgeous and interesting Angel Oak Tree, stroll through Waterfront Park and Battery Park, and check out City Market.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there and Fort Sumter for its history (and views).

Even for non-military-history buffs like us, these sights can still be an interesting way to spend some time!

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

Set right on the water with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Rainier, it’s no wonder that busy and beautiful Seattle is one of the most popular west coast weekend getaways in the USA.

A weekend trip is the perfect amount of time to eat your way through Pike Place Market, head to the top of the Space Needle, visit the famous Chihuly Museum, and  check out the fun and interesting Museum of Pop Culture.

Looking for interesting neighborhoods? Head to Fremont, where the self-proclaimed unofficial motto is “des libertas quirkas”, aka “the freedom to be quirky”.

Much like Austin, Portland proudly embraces its weirdness, celebrating the eclectic and bizarre in all possible ways–and that makes it endlessly fun to visit!

Bookworms like me will immediately head to Powell’s City of Books–I still think it’s the biggest bookstore I’ve ever visited–while foodies will want to head directly to the local ice cream obsession, Salt & Straw.

Voodoo Doughnuts, now with a few locations nationally, also originated here and remains popular with tourists (though depending on who you ask, not locals–for what it’s worth, we’d rate the doughnuts 7/10).

During your weekend trip to Portland, make time to visit the Japanese Garden and the International Rose Garden, especially if you visit when everything is in bloom.

Plenty of incredible parts of the Columbia River Gorge, including famous Multnomah Falls, are also within easy reach of Portland and deserve to feature on your list of things to do in Portland !

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!
  • Portland Harbor Hotel: Located on Portland Waterfront is this luxury and stylish hotel. With beautifully designed rooms and a great restaurant, you are also well located to explore more of Portland.

Possibly the most iconic of all these weekend getaways in the USA, Las Vegas is a prime destination for short trips.

First-time visitors will certainly want to hit the Strip, even if only to check out the hotels, fountains, malls, and generally see what all the fuss is about–but there’s more to Vegas than the Strip (if you want there to be, that is).

Whether you want to hit the casinos to gamble and soak in some shows, check out Las Vega’s interesting (and far less touristed) downtown area, or get out and experience the fantastic natural highlights of the Southwest, Las Vegas has something to offer.

While the more-famous southern rim of the Grand Canyon is really too far away from Las Vegas to make a practical day trip, options like Valley of Fire State Park, Red Rock Canyon, and the Hoover Dam are all possibilities.

Where to Stay in Las Vegas

  • The Venetian: As one of the most iconic hotels on the Las Vegas strip this is a fabulous choice for your romantic trip. Everything about this resort is luxurious and huge, from the 1.2-acre pool deck to the in house shopping mall. Book a suite and feel like a real star.
  • Bellagio: Fans of the Ocean franchise will know this hotel and its fountains, although almost any Las Vegas fans know the fountain show of the Bellagio! Stay in this famous hotel for the ultimate treat.

San Francisco

The city of hills, ocean views, and the famous Golden Gate Bridge is at the top of many people’s lists of best USA weekend getaways–and with an endless list of things to do that cater to all interests, why not?

Be sure to pay a visit to the touristed highlights that most interest you–Fisherman’s Wharf (and its adorable sea lions!), Alcatraz, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the Painted Ladies (of Full House fame), and checking out Lombard Street.

Once you cross those highlights off your list, though, make time for a few less-obvious attractions, like San Francisco’s Japanese Garden, the Land’s End Labyrinth, and Fort Point.

And, of course, you can’t forget to go for a walk in the woods while visiting San Francisco: the Muir Woods are an unforgettable experience worthy of your time on any weekend trip to the area!

Where to Stay in San Francisco

  • Petit Auberge: This adorable hotel in Nob Hill is the perfect place to base yourself for a romantic trip. Styled like a French Auberge with cozy furnishings and fireplaces in the rooms, opening onto pretty terraces, the hotel also has private parking. Essential in the city.
  • Beacon Grand: Opened in 1928 as a hotel for the creators of San Francisco society and recently reopened after restoration preserving architectural details and artisan crafts. Stay in a stunning piece of history and feel like a star.

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a USA weekend getaway? Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately.

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, whether you want to track down iconic spots, explore the best food in New York , see a show (or three), or discover offbeat NYC , you can find something to captivate you.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits, a weekend in New York is certainly long enough to see all those sights we’ve seen in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge–in a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just one (no more–too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

4 Day New York Itinerary: Manhattan Skyline with Brooklyn Bridge

Incredibly beautiful and steeped in both American history and its own distinct, modern culture, Boston is one of those cities you visit for a weekend and fall in love with for a lifetime (we would know–we’ve been crazy about it ever since our brief 3-month stint of living there!).

While you’re there, be sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Also consider strolling through the Boston Public Garden (one of our favorite spots in the city) and the Boston Common, visiting the penguins at New England Aquarium, meandering along the Freedom Trail, and hitting the water with a whale-watching cruise .

Bibliophiles like us shouldn’t miss the Boston Public Library (check out the Reading Room on the second floor!), nor Brattle Bookshop.

Sports fans, head directly to Fenway Park for a tour and/or a game.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
  • Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

2 Days in Boston Itinerary: Beacon Hill

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip in the United States, and an incredibly popular stop for visitors from other countries who are planning a trip to the USA !

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC–everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, are available–far more than you can visit in a single weekend.

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, and those looking to enjoy the city’s magnificent food scene will love taking a DC food tour .

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that cherry blossom season in Washington DC is one of the best (and most popular) times to visit.

As a bonus, many of the things to do in Washington DC , including all of the Smithsonian museums, are free to enter.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

  • CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
  • Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

The self-proclaimed live music capital of the world, the home of the world-famous SXSW festival, and a city full of classic American charm with a country flair: when you’re looking for the best weekend getaways in the USA, it would be a shame to leave off the gem that is Austin, TX.

I have lived in Austin as both a child and an adult, and when I wasn’t living there, returned at least 1-2 times a year for most of my life due to family living in the area–and I never, ever get tired of visiting to tuck into a plate a delicious breakfast tacos, general TexMex, or barbecue.

During your weekend trip to Austin , head down to South Congress for fabulous food, eclectic boutiques, and incredible street art, and “Dirty Sixth” for some unforgettable nightlife (or alternatively, Rainey Street or Guadalupe Street for a different vibe).

Of course, this is the capital of Texas, so save some time during your weekend trip to Austin for some more typical cultural highlights, like visiting the Texas State Capitol and the historic (and possibly haunted) Driskill Hotel.

Plus, as Austin is surrounded by the stunning Texas Hill Country, no trip there is complete without going for at least one hike in Austin and taking a day trip to beloved nearby towns and wineries– Wimberley and Fredericksburg are both favorites.

Where to Stay in Austin

  • The Driskill: Originally built in 1886, The Driskill elegantly combines old-world charm with all of today’s modern luxuries. Dine at the award-winning on-site restaurant and enjoy the luxury of this iconic Austin landmark.
  • Hotel Saint Cecilia: This hotel set in pretty gardens is a great oasis in the city. There is an onsite pool with private bungalows, perfect for relaxing.

Visiting Chicago means it’s time for pizza, pizza, and more pizza… and okay, probably some sightseeing as well.

The sprawling city of Chicago, set right up against beautiful Lake Michigan, is certainly worthy of being included on any list of the best weekend getaways in the USA–and there are definitely plenty of fun things to do in Chicago to keep you busy while you’re there, including plenty of opportunities to explore the culture, enjoy delicious food, and even get outside in Chicago .

Come to Chicago for the weekend to snap selfies at The Bean, test your fear of heights on the famous Chicago Skydeck, pay a visit to Navy Pier, and of course, to eat a lot of deep dish.

Art lovers will find plenty of museums to devour in Chicago, including the incredible Art Institute of Chicago, and baseball fans will enjoy seeing the Cubs play a game at the famous Wrigley Field.

For animal lovers and family travelers, head directly to Shedd Aquarium (and for family travelers, make note of the American Girl Place as well–the highlight of my first visit to Chicago long, long ago!).

Where to Stay in Chicago

  • Warwick Allerton: Situated on the Magnificent Mile in Downtown Chicago, the hotel is perfect for shopping and discovering iconic architecture.
  • Staypineapple: This oddly named hotel was designed by a world renowned architect and features stylish details such as mosaic floors and marble ceilings. No detail is spared and rooms are a testament to the thought that has gone into each part of the hotel.

Safely, Detroit is not on your list. Detroit is a fabulous city and Michiganders are very friendly and likeable.

Austin is not the country music capital — it’s the live music capital.

Well isn’t that an embarrassing typo for someone who has owned a Keep Austin Weird shirt for 20 years! Lol. I’ll get it fixed.

Very interesting

Or Madison… both have their own unique quirks that can keep a weekend enjoyable

You forgot Richmond Virginia, which would probably run circles around half of these cities on your list.

Not even close Tony!

absolutely incorrect

Umm Philly????

Will go on the list when we expand it! We love Philly. :-)

Boise is an awesome city in the west too!

Love what you do, just curious, how do you make ends meet?

How did Dallas not make the list

Cause it sucks.

Great ideas, thank you!

Personally, I absolutely loved San Antonio what a great little weekend get away!

We love it too–one of our former homes and one of our favorite places to eat in the country!

Two Week Traveller

Best 2-Week Holiday Destinations

DISCLAIMER: This post might have links to travel services and products that we enjoy. We might make a commission from it at no extra cost to you.

I know that two weeks is not a very long holiday for someone, but this is the reality for many people. If you are from Europe, Australia, or New Zealand, a three-week holiday is about normal. But in places like the US, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, two weeks is more the standard.

Don’t fret, that doesn’t mean you can’t go exploring the world. Although I run my own business, I still get in situations where I can only go away for 2-3 weeks at a time. If it’s only a 2-week vacation, I make sure that I don’t bring my laptop and take a full break from work.

This list of the best 2-week holiday destinations will show you why these places are worth taking the trip for. I also included a link to each destination to specific 2-week itineraries to give you an idea of how to spend 14 days there.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DESTINATION FOR YOUR VACATION

3 images - two are a photos of a plane in an airport with sunset background and a photo of pointy location sighs with different names of countries - Best 2-Week Holiday Destinations

Two weeks can easily be spent in a small country like Denmark or Maldives. While a massive country like Australia, two weeks might not be enough, but it’s plenty if you focus your itinerary on one area.

Have you been here before

I was a preacher of exploring new places. However, that changed when I only had limited time for a vacation. If I really want to, I’d choose a new place. But if I’m looking to lie on the beach, drinking cold coconut, I’d pick a nice destination near me even if I’ve been there before.

Sometimes, I even go to the same country but will explore a different part. For example, if last year you spent two weeks on the east coast of the US . Perhaps, this year, you could explore the Midwest or the West Coast of the US .

If you spent the summer in the south of France last year, maybe this year, you can save the holiday and go skiing in winter in the mountains of France.

Distance from home

The number one that I will recommend is calculating the distance of the destination from home. If you only have exactly 2 weeks, coming from Canada and heading to Australia, you’ll easily spend 2-3 days travelling, not to mention the fatigue from jetlag.

That doesn’t mean you should never visit Australia, but maybe you can rearrange your holiday and make sure it starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday. You can book a flight that leaves on the evening of Friday. In this way, you can account for the travel time during the weekend and not shave off your actual off-from-work-time .

You can also save that destination for the year where you didn’t use your sick leave and instead convert it to holiday leave.

First, check how long the flight is and how many connections are. There are no flights directly to Australia from the US, perhaps, that would be a good route for you. Just avoid 2-3 connections if possible.

Of course, the season will play a big part. Some companies require employees to take annual holidays during a specific season. While people with children usually take their time off during summer when school is also on a break.

Choose destinations like the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Southeast Asia if you want a summer holiday. Destinations like Switzerland, Canada , and the Nordics are great for winter activities.

One thing to remember, the seasons are different in the southern hemisphere. So, don’t expect warm temperatures in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, and Argentina from May to August.

Knowing the season in your destination will help you write your travel itinerary and packing list for your 2-week trip or a packing list for a summer trip . It will also help you visualise the activities you can do. For example, don’t expect to go swimming in the ocean in Australia from June to August because the water is absolutely freezing. Those months are the winter season in Australia and New Zealand.

One last thing – budget. If you have a limited budget, perhaps a holiday domestically will be a better option. This way, you can easily drive around, save money on transportation, and spend it on a nice hotel room.

Countries in Southeast Asia and South Asia, such as Sri Lanka are one of the most affordable places in the world. So, if you’re after good food, extraordinary adventures, interesting culture, and budget-friendly – consider this region.

If you have all the budget, places like Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Scandinavia , Western Europe, and North America are fantastic destinations. Do you know that not many people expect Chile and Israel to be expensive?

BEST 2-WEEK HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS

Honestly, almost any place in the world can be an excellent destination for your 2-week vacation. But here, I include the places I spent 10-14 days in, and I will explain why they are perfect for a short holiday period.

I know, Brazil is such a huge country. However, most people, especially seasonal travellers, are keen to see popular places, such as Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon. Rio will give you the best beach holiday you expect from Brazil

From beach bumming or dancing on Carnival, there’s nothing better than water activities and street parties. Spending 7 days in this region of Brazil, you can also visit Sao Paulo. Before heading north, you can take a 2-day stopover at the capital city of Brasilia.

After that, if you are up for an adventure, you can get on a flight to Manaus, where you can spend some time inside the Amazon Jungle. Of course, not all areas are accessible but you can simply book a cruise or a 2 or 3-night stay in a cabin. Check out 2 weeks in Brazil itineraries .

Cambodia will always be one of my favourite destinations for a 2-week vacation. During this time, you can explore the magnificent and unique Angkor Wat, which should take 2-3 days. Make sure to do a day trip and visit Battambang to experience the bamboo train ride.

Next, head to Sihanoukville for some water activities under the sun. Book a boat trip that will take you to Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Rong (different islands that sit next to each other).

For the final leg of your vacation, head to the capital city Phnom Penh where you can learn more about Cambodian culture, including the genocide that happened in the 70s. From here, you should not have a problem getting on an international flight home. We have a 2-week travel itinerary for Cambodia to give you some ideas.

This country has a perfect size, you can easily spend 14 days in Colombia or stretch it out for another week or two – there’s just so much to see and do!

You could start by landing in the capital city of Bogota. There are many walking tours and day trips you could join. You could learn why Colombia has one of the best coffees in the world, and perhaps, you’d like to bring some home. I personally spent 4 days here, but you could easily spend more.

Next, take a flight to the city of eternal springs – Medellin. Unfortunately, it is more known for its dark history brought by the drug cartels. But with the help of the locals and foreigners who love living and travelling here, slowly, Medellin has created a new welcoming and more positive image.

Your final destination is to visit the Caribbean without spending too much. Take a flight to Cartagena, where you can book boat tours that will take you to beautiful beaches and islands of the Caribbean. You can even take a day trip near Barranquilla, where you can try the mud volcano spa from El Totumo.

If you are thinking of Europe, one of the best 2-week holiday destinations is undeniably France. It is famous for so many things. But its beauty goes beyond the Eiffel Tower and Paris City. France is a destination that you can visit all year round. Looking for a ski destination for winter? The French Alps have you covered.

Thirsty for a beach holiday? The towns of Marseille and Nice sit pretty on the Mediterranean while Bordeaux and Bayonne offer you to go surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. If you plan a 2-week honeymoon , France is a fantastic place for that celebration.

Food lovers or wine enthusiasts? You already know that France will not disappoint you. And if you are a fan of cycling, make sure to schedule your trip during the summer season and follow Tour de France.

Before you decide, take a look at our compilation of 2 weeks in Europe . It has 6 different European itineraries and we will keep adding fun and exciting travel plans to it. But we also have an itinerary for 2 weeks in France with 3 different options.

Iceland is one of the destinations that many people want to see but also cannot afford. It’s true that Iceland is not affordable. It’s actually one of the most expensive places to travel for many people and even to live for many locals.

But it’s all worth it. When I booked my 2 weeks in Iceland trip, I knew it would cost me more than what I normally spend on a holiday. But I also know it’s a place like no other in the world.

Spending two weeks in Iceland can be affordable. First, most flights from Europe are already affordable. Second, coming from North America, there are a lot of direct flights to Iceland that are affordable.

Second, most tourists rent a car when visiting Iceland. This gives you not only freedom to move, but since it’s popular, there are many deals available where you can book a flight with a car rental combo or car rental and accommodation package.

During your visit, make sure to check out the Blue Lagoon Bath, Gullfoss Falls, Skogafoss, Pngvellir National Park, and Geysir, to name a few. Following the Golden Circle will lead to the most popular spots in Iceland.

From my personal experience, since there is so much to see, explore, and eat in Italy, two weeks here might not cut it. But the good news is that focusing on just one region will work just fine. Then on your next visit, you can travel to a different region and have a completely different yet wonderful experience.

You can choose to focus your holiday in the northern or southern parts. Of course, the South has so much to offer for the summer vacation. In contrast, the north is an excellent area for hiking and learning about the culture and arts. If you want to go skiing, the northern part is your destination.

For food, well, you can never go wrong – everywhere in Italy, the food and wine are worth eating and drinking. Whether you choose the north or the south, you want to start or end your vacation in Rome, I mean, you can’t leave without seeing the historical sites of the Colosseum, the Ruins, and many Piazzas.

We also have an itinerary for 2 weeks in Italy . You can choose between 4 different travel itineraries depending on what you enjoy (i.e historical places, beaches, hiking, etc).

If you really want to make the most out of your vacation, you can spend 2 weeks in Nepal . You can go hiking there, sign up to trek Everest Base Camp and see wild animals in a national park. When I visited Nepal, I had one month, but I was trekking during the first two weeks.

A girl in our tour group was spending her 15-day vacation in Nepal and doing the EBC trek. The trip lasted for 2 weeks, so it’s super ideal, but make sure to train for a continuous trek for 14 days before you depart for the trip.

New Zealand

I’d probably say this depends on where you will be coming from and if the flights are reasonable enough. For example, from Midwest in the US, going to New Zealand might require you to make three connections and about a nearly 36-hour flight.

But if coming from Australia, Thailand, or even Europe, getting to New Zealand is very easy. If you have a very limited 14 days, you can probably make it to New Zealand if you plan to leave Friday night and return on the weekend.

Doing it this way can earn an extra 3-4 days. Although quite a journey to get to, New Zealand is very worth it. There are so many glaciers, lakes, Fjords, and an animal that can only be found here. Spending 2 weeks in New Zealand is perfect; you can explore the North and South Islands.

Israel and Palestine

Israel and Palestine might have political conflicts, but many visitors who come here actually visit both places. There are so many beautiful attractions to explore and so many historical spots. You can definitely spend 2 weeks in Israel and Palestine and get to see most of the top attractions.

In this region, you can also find the famous Dead Sea. A very salty sea, lets you float, and is covered in mud that is great for your skin. If you want to have some time under the sea, Tel Aviv is a popular beach destination, while the Read Sea is a great location for some snorkelling.

Visit places like Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jericho, and the famous Jerusalem. Here, you will find four religions coming together.

For foodies, don’t worry. Israel and Palestine offer you delicious Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern dishes. A lot of them are vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Spending two weeks here is filled with lots of adventure.

Another great destination if you are looking to spend your 2-week vacation in Peru . You can finally see the famous wonder of the world – Machu Picchu. While many tourists opt for multiple-day hikes, you can also go for a day trip from Cusco or spend only a night in the town near the ruins.

Next, you can spend some time in the capital city of Lima and eat some ceviche and lomo saltado . You can also get on a bus and head to Huaraz, a region filled with stunning glaciers and lakes. However, if you plan to hike from Cusco all the way to Machu Picchu, spending 3 weeks in Peru is more suitable.

Philippines

The Philippines is definitely one of the best 2-week holiday destinations on this list, especially if you love the beach and water adventure. It is composed of 7,000+ islands. Imagine how much fun you could have visiting this country. Check our 2 weeks in the Philippines itinerary with 3 travel plan options.

From hiking beautiful mountains to diving deep down the Pacific Ocean. The Philippines is a famous spot for people who love water activities, the corals here are very unique and cannot be found somewhere else. Getting your diving course certificate ad license here is also more affordable than in Europe or North America.

The locals also speak great English, and communicating and going around is easy. I recommend you not spend too much time in Manila, the capital. While it has its charm, it’s very traffic, and unfortunately, there are not many historical places left to explore except Intramuros. Head to Palawan, Boracay, or Siargao for beach time. Go to the north of hiking options.

South Africa

2 images - 2 girrafes and an aerial shot of Cape Point, South Africa

This is one of my favourite destinations in the world. I’m not going to lie, it’s not the safest country I have been to. But, I didn’t let it stop me from exploring the area. Geared with safety tips in mind, I spent nearly a week at Kruger National Park, where I saw over 50 different species of animals. If you have never been, here’s a complete guide for things to know before you go to Kruger National Park .

From giraffes, elephants, big cats, dozens of birds, and lots and lots of animals like impalas and kudus with beautiful horns. 2 weeks in South Africa is plenty. They have great domestic flight choices that will take you to nearly all popular destinations.

After that, I recommend you get yourself to Cape Town. Rich in historical spots, the famous Table Mountain, and the spot where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. If you plan to stay longer, check out this 3 weeks in South Africa vacation plan .

ALSO CHECK: 2 weeks in Morocco or 2 weeks in Tanzania

I can’t talk about the best destinations without mentioning the gateway to the Far East, right? Thailand is popular for its amazing beaches and very delicious dishes (spicy but yummy). Spending 2 weeks in Thailand means that you can explore both its northern part and the south.

Bangkok, the capital city, is a hub for partying in Southeast Asia like no other. At the same time, famous islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Phuket offer their white sand beaches and great spots for snorkelling and diving. You should be able to find a flight directly to the south, but you might still have to land in Bangkok.

There are airports in every popular tourist destination, so you don’t have to spend too much time getting from one place to another. You should be able to find direct flights between cities with no problem.

The top places you want to visit are Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui, to name a few. You won’t surely run out of places to see even though you have been to Thailand before. It’s also a fantastic place to visit if you are on a budget.

The UK might not be many people’s number one travel destination. However, the UK consists of beautiful countries offering amazing destinations for hiking and, as we all know, very rich in history.

The UK is a great destination to spend two fun weeks. You can choose to cover two different countries. Many tourists often combine England and Scotland, while others would go with Northern Ireland and Wales.

Regardless of which places you want to see, they are easy to get to. You can rent a car, take a domestic flight, or use the train system. For starters, I recommend you enjoy the big city of London if you like cities and match it with a quiet exploration of the Scotland Highlands.

But the first time I went to England, specifically London, I was overwhelmed by the number of places I could see in such a short period of time. If it’s you have never been, I recommend you focus on historical spots if that’s your interest. For example, visiting the Tower of London and its surrounding can easily eat up your entire day.

If you don’t like cities, you can head right to Cardiff or explore the stunning Snowdonia, then to Belfast or visit the less touristy area of northern or southern England. For a complete city lover, London, Belfast, and Glasglow are the top cities you may want to visit.

We have 3 travel itineraries for two weeks in England or our 2 weeks in the UK itinerary if you want to explore that country for your first visit to the UK.

I personally have mixed feelings about Turkey. I have safety concerns for solo female travellers to Turkey. However, I can’t deny how stunned I was by its beauty. Cappadocia is one of the places that is truly magical.

Get on a hot air balloon and see Cappadocia’s beauty from the top. If you want to be challenged, you can rent an ATV and drive around the area. Don’t forget to visit Istanbul, although it’s not the capital city, it’s undeniable how popular it is. It is also the gateway to Asia from Europe.

Here, you can visit Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque – the two are just a few hundred metres away. If you are looking for some sun love, the coastal city of Antalya is popular both with foreign and local tourists.

Check our 2 weeks in Turkey itinerary to help you plan your trip. This includes ideas on when, top places to go, where to stay, and how to design your itinerary.

Vietnam is famous for its unique and delicious dishes. Still, it’s also popular for adventurous activities such as motorbiking across the country, hiking to the highest point in Indochina, and visiting the world’s largest cave.

You can easily spend 2 weeks in Vietnam . Believe it or not, small towns around Vietnam have their own domestic airport, train station, or sleeper bus that can get you there. This means you can easily hop from one place to another.

Spend one week in the north, exploring Hanoi, Sa Pa, and Halong Bay (a UNESCO Heritage Site), then hop on a flight to central Vietnam, and then to the south. An easy itinerary to follow that lets you cover the country from top to bottom.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can rent a motorbike either from the north (Hanoi) or the South (Ho Chi Minh City), and travel the country driving it.

SUMMARY OF 2-WEEK HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS

Spending 14 days might does it not mean that you shouldn’t travel and enjoy your well-deserved break from work and life.

These places offer a lot of fun things to do, and you can definitely make the most out of your limited yet justified holiday. The key is choosing a place closer to you but offering exciting new activities.

I hope you found this list of the best 2-week holiday destinations helpful.

The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2022

From far-flung destinations to hometown favorites, 2022 is the year to get back out there and turn your dream trips into reality.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Planning new adventures as a new year approaches is always a thrill, but finding the best places to visit in 2022 is unique. After two years of border closures, cruise cancellations, and travel restrictions galore , 2022 is the year we hope to get back out there, uninhibited (albeit vaccinated and COVID tested ), return to our favorite destinations, and cross new ones off our lists.

Though the hospitality industry was hit hard by the pandemic, many properties used the forced downtime to renovate rooms, add new amenities, and expand outdoor spaces to offer even more once guests return. 2022 is when many travelers will venture further from home, and even overseas, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, finally reaping the benefits of these valiant efforts.

Although COVID variants remain, regulations are still evolving, and precautions must still be taken, many of the destinations we chose for 2022 offer what we believe travelers are looking for in a post-pandemic world, from hotels with private accommodations to destinations teeming with fresh-air activities . Others, like Las Vegas, are for those who are ready and raring to make up for all the social time they missed — with a few splashy headliners, including Adele and the Raiders, thrown in for good measure.

As cruising makes its comeback , we included unforgettable places to see by water, from Antarctica to the Nile, and as hard-hit destinations like Italy and Asia recover, we found the buzziest reasons to return. Of course we didn't forget about all the stateside gems we got to know while domestic travel was surging, from Alaska and California to Florida and Michigan.

Our 2022 list, organized alphabetically, doesn't hold back, with aspirational trips as far away as India, Mozambique, Qatar, and even space — but we're also including hometown favorites, like Walt Disney World and its new Star Wars hotel ; the wellness retreats of beautiful Sedona; and the simple pleasures of small-town, farm-to-table living in Franklin, Tennessee. Because no matter what type of trip you've been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2022 into the year you get back out there and make it a reality.

1. Abruzzo, Italy

Stretching from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea on the peninsula's southeastern side, Abruzzo, Italy has long been one of the country's most overlooked destinations despite its unspoiled villages, picturesque Trabocchi Coast, and stunning natural escapes. Over the past few years, however, it has gone from a sleepy underdog to an ambitious harbinger of slow travel, sustainable gastronomy, and conscious hospitality. Villa Corallo , a 19th-century mansion near Civitella del Tronto was transformed into a five-star hotel in 2019. Dimore Montane , an eco-lodge opened in 2020 in Majella National Park, marries glamping with environmentally-friendly facilities with a zero waste policy. Meanwhile, restaurants like Bottega Culinaria in San Vito Chietino and Materia Prima in Castel di Sangro are redefining the region as one of Italy's most exciting food hotspots for their innovative and sustainable takes on local produce and traditional dishes (in case Niko Romito's three-Michelin-starred Reale wasn't enough). And completing construction this Spring is Via Verde dei Trabocchi: a cycling and pedestrian path along the Adriatic sea that's being built on a disused railway route. — Marianna Cerini

With many international borders closed over the last two years, many eager U.S. travelers' eyes turned to Alaska. The vast state, famous for its towering, snow-capped peaks, pristine wilderness, massive national parks, and colorful locals, made for a dynamic destination with no passport required. But as borders reopen, interest in the 49th state is showing no signs of slowing down. Alaska's tourism board said early forecasts are projecting that more than 1.57 million cruise ship passengers could visit southeast Alaska in summer 2022. That's an 18% jump from 2019, the previous record year. Many perennial favorite cruise lines , like Holland America, will be returning to full strength after a non-existent 2020 and abbreviated 2021. Others, like Windstar Cruises, UnCruise, and Hurtigruten are rolling out fresh itineraries or are launching new ships. On dry land, Alaska is set to see myriad new offerings and events. In Juneau, the Sealaska Heritage Institute will open their Arts Campus (where visitors will be able to learn about Alaska Native art and culture) and will host Celebration , one of the largest gatherings of Indigenous peoples. In Anchorage, Fur Rendezvous , Alaska's oldest and largest winter festival, will be back from Feb. 25 to March 6 (which also happens to be peak aurora season ). The event hosts activities like the Running of the Reindeer and the Outhouse Races, before culminating with the 50th running of the iconic Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race . — Bailey Berg

3. Anguilla

This easy-going Caribbean gem is simpler than ever to get to with American Airlines launching the first-ever nonstop, direct flight from Miami on Dec. 11. Private charter flights by Tradewind Aviation have also resumed service to the island. And the just-opened Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club has a fleet of jets to ferry guests from key U.S. cities. The sprawling luxury resort will include a few restaurants overseen by chef Abram Bissell, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, The NoMad, and The Modern. Quintessence , a boutique luxury resort with perks like butler service and a 4:1 staff-to-guest ratio, is opening a more affordable annex of suites called Quinn that will debut in 2022 (along with a Champagne cellar tasting room and Art Bar). New Restaurant Uchu at Belmond Cap Juluca is taking inspiration from Belmond's collection of properties in Peru. Named after the Quechuan word for spice, the menu will feature contemporary Peruvian cuisine inspired by three of the country's regions: the coast, the jungle, and the highlands. — Scott Bay

4. Antarctica

The pandemic shutdown created a compelling reason to visit Antarctica in 2022: See how the whales, seals, and penguins react after nearly two years without seeing humans. New polar-class expedition ships and new ways to get to the White Continent are reasons to pack your boots too. Viking Expeditions will be in Antarctica for the first time in 2022 with new, twin 378-passenger expedition ships. 8. Budapest, Hungary

Very few places in the world capture both old-world charm and elegant modernity like Hungary's capital city, and Budapest's latest 130-room luxury hotel, Matild Palace , is a shining example. The neo-baroque palace-turned-hotel, which opened last summer in the city's District V, is a UNESCO-protected site that once housed the city's royalty. The hotel is now home to Wolfgang Punk's famed restaurant, Spago , the first of its kind in central Europe. It also hosts the Duchess bar — a rooftop "liquor library" that mixes craft cocktails using local wines and pálinka, Hungarian fruit brandy, which can be enjoyed alongside panoramic views of the Danube river. Surrounded by 22 wine regions, Budapest is a city for oenophiles. Enjoy a glass of Kékfrankos or Kadarka in the Castle District's newly opened wine bar, Takler Borbár Buda , founded by one of the country's renowned winemaking families. Don't leave the city without visiting Marlou , a biodynamic wine bar near the Hungarian State Opera, and Portobello , an unassuming coffee and natural wine bar around the corner from Matild Palace. — Stephanie Andrews

10. British Virgin Islands

Within the Caribbean, the 60 islands that comprise the British Virgin Islands have long held the reputation of luxury draped in relaxation. And now it's doubling down on that brand of island spirit with Richard Branson's second private island, the 125-acre Moskito Island that opened in October and sits right across from his first BVI paradise, Necker Island (which received a serious upgrade when it reopened last year after a two-year closure). The new destination will eventually have 10 private estates that can be rented through Virgin Limited Edition , but among the ones already available are Point Estate, starting at $17,500 a night, and Oasis Estate for $19,000. But Moskito isn't the only shiny new reason to visit BVI. Proving the area's resilience following the devastation after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Saba Rock , the private island long known for its diving, went through a complete reconstruction before reopening in October; the Bitter End Yacht Club reopened in December with BVI's first over-the-water bungalows; and Oil Nut Bay will expand in early 2022 with new villas, a watersports center, and spa. Also on tap for 2022, the solar-powered White Bay Villas and new hilltop suites at Long Bay Beach Resort . And with the Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival returning in the spring of 2022 after being canceled for two years, BVI is proving it's truly back and stronger than ever. — Rachel Chang

For more of a low-key, family-friendly escape, the Baglioni Resort Sardinia opened 404 an hour south in San Teodoro in June, overlooking the stunning Tavolara Marine Reserve . — Nina Ruggiero

Yes, it's a place where you can find the white-washed buildings and blue roofs you've lusted after on Instagram for years, and a spot where you can dive into the cerulean blue waters of the Mediterranean at every turn. And of course you can dig deep into both history and mythology as humans have lived on the island since the 7th millennium B.C ., not to mention the fact that Crete is the birthplace of Zeus . 14. Doha, Qatar

As we ask ourselves what cities of the future should look like, we naturally look around for examples. Places like Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York City seem to fit the description on paper, but I'd argue that no city better encapsulates that definition than Doha, the capital of Qatar. There is so much to discover — from East-West/West-East , a series of four steel monoliths created by sculptor Richard Serra to the Museum of Islamic Art , the massive 560,000-square-foot gallery. Eat at Syrian comfort food spot Damasca One, Em Sherif a rooftop spot that serves up authentic regional dishes, and the lively corner restaurant Nourlaya Contemporary for Sri Lankan cuisine. Forty miles west of Cayuga, The Lakehouse on Canandaigua — situated on, yes, Canandaigua Lake — recently unveiled the Willowbrook Spa, which boasts lakeside barrel sauna sessions among other innovative treatments. Sandwiched between Cayuga and Canandaigua lakes is Seneca Lake, home to the largest of the Finger Lakes wine trails (this might be riesling country, but don't knock the lighter-bodied reds till you try 'em) and foodie draws like the 14-seat F.L.X. Table . Travelers visiting in the coming year will also see the Finger Lakes festival roster return in full force, including Rochester's Lilac Festival in May and International Jazz Festival in July, as well as attractions for the historically inclined road tripper, like Cayuga County's celebration of Harriet Tubman's birth through a number of walking tours and activations rolled out through 2022. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

17. Franklin, Tennessee

Despite its count of more than 80,000 year-round residents, the very walkable Franklin firmly grasps onto its small-town charms , starting with a quintessentially quaint downtown chock-full of shops and restaurants finding shelter in brick storefronts lining the sidewalks. The uninitiated might know this place for its past — Civil War museums, battleground sites, and historical markers telling the stories of a slave market, race riots, and Black soldiers in the U.S. Colored Troop division of the army all offer points of education and reflection. But the southern city has many modern-day draws as well — for starters, an exciting food and drink scene that includes the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and Arrington Vineyards , the largest winery in the region. Musical events and venues abound, too: The Pilgrimage Music Festival is one of the biggest in the state, and the 7,500-seat FirstBank Amphitheater , newly opened inside a former rock quarry, has welcomed the likes of the Jonas Brothers and Santana to its stage. There's also Leiper's Fork , a quirky-cool enclave filled with antique shops and art galleries. Even more brand-new to the scene is Southall , a 325-acre farm and inn with 62 rooms and suites and 16 cottages opening this June. The lush setting amid rolling hills makes active adventures (hiking, biking, kayaking), wellness pursuits (a spa, meditation, yoga, and two outdoor pools), and nourishing food (the restaurant uses ingredients grown, raised, and foraged on the property) easy to find. All of this and more lie just a short, 30-minute drive from bustling Nashville, making it tempting to tack onto a visit to the capital city. — Alisha Prakash

While South Africa and Uganda grab headlines for African wildlife, Mozambique has been quietly making strides protecting 17 percent of its land — including beaches, coral reefs, and islands — showcasing its dedication to its natural beauty both on land and underwater. Ever since the country's 16-year civil war ended in 1992, the southeastern African nation has been aiming to build back in the right ways. Case in point: the private island of Ilha Caldeira, less than seven miles off the coast as part of the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, located within the marine-protected area with 20 percent of the country's intact living coral. It's here that the eco-luxury Banyan Tree resort chain has developed one of its most ambitious projects yet, a five-star property — accessible by jetty or helicopter — with 40 private pool villas that will be completely solar powered. Add to that a fish market restaurant with a 270-degree ocean view, the brand's trademark Banyan Tree Spa, and world-class diving, all in a too-pristine-to-believe beach setting, and this island escape is sure to draw attention away from its Indian Ocean neighbors when it opens at the end of 2022. — Rachel Chang

Kyushu may be less than two hours from Tokyo by plane, but it feels far from Honshū's well-beaten tourist circuit. The southwesternmost Japanese main island is still largely unexplored, providing those willing to venture off the beaten path with a much different Japan than the one they'll find in its cities. As a warm, subtropical island, Kyushu is home to long, golden beaches and some of Japan's best snorkeling and scuba diving. Inland, the country's most active volcano, Mt. Aso, feeds the island's myriad natural hot springs — many of which offer sea views. 32. Nile Cruise, Egypt

There is no trip that will convert you to a life of river cruising quite like a sail down (well, technically, up) the Nile. In fact, the world's first river cruises sailed in Egypt, a country designed around the central waterway, where it makes sense that the Nile would act as your home base. A typical Egyptian river cruise sets sail from Cairo to Luxor and then Aswan, with the occasional stop to visit an island temple along the way — complete with sights like the Pyramids, Valley of Kings and Queens, Nefertari's tomb, and the Temple of Kom Ombo. Conquering Portugal's highest peak, the cloud-shrouded, 7,713-foot-high Mount Pico, used to be the island's main draw, but a recent uptick in hospitality infrastructure has allowed for more opportunity to partake of Pico's most important agricultural output: wine. Renowned Portuguese winemaker Antonio Maçanita just opened a new winery that comes with bookable design-forward apartments adjacent to the island's unique vineyards. On Pico, grapes are planted on volcanic terroir that are then protected from Atlantic winds with rock walls. Maçanita's Azores Wine Company 's mineral, sometimes slightly salty wines could be the perfect celebratory drink after a grueling hike. The crashing waves around Pico are beginning to seduce surfers, too. And there are also ample opportunities to watch for marine life thanks to 20 species of dolphins and whales (including humpbacks and orcas) that can be spotted in these waters. But if you'd rather eat what's in the water: Try lapas, a local shellfish delicacy best served grilled with butter and garlic and finished with a squeeze of lemon. Thankfully, getting to experience all of this has never been easier: Starting July 1, United Airlines will for the first time connect Newark to the island of São Miguel (the Azores' largest island), and from there, it's a quick hop over to Pico. Or you could always get there via direct flights from Lisbon or Porto with Tap Air Portugal's stopover program. — Chadner Navarro

Two hours from L.A., the Santa Ynez Valley is rural, unassuming, and coming into its own. The region has grown grapes for decades and has even made a Hollywood cameo in the movie Sideways. The arrival of newer tasting rooms, restaurants, and hotels in recent years has firmly put the area on oenophiles' and travelers' radars. Start with a private olive oil tasting at Global Gardens and hard cider at Tin City Cider in Los Olivos. Follow with pizza pies at Full of Life Flatbread and vino at nearby female-owned A Tribute to Grace and Casa Dumetz . Detour to Firestone Walker 's outpost in Buellton for a few limited edition craft brews and finish with dishes such as roasted tomato and fennel risotto at the Ballard Inn's Gathering Table 404 . Though it's technically just beyond the boundaries of the valley in Lompoc, The Hilt Estate , is too good to miss. And once it opens this year as an Auberge property, The Inn at Mattei's Tavern will make for the perfect base from which to explore it all. — Tanvi Chheda

39. São Paulo, Brazil

Known for its dynamic combination of luxury, design, and fashion influence, São Paulo is an international metropolitan hub of arts and culture. It's the largest city in South America, hosting an array of entertainment opportunities such as fabulous hotels, decadent restaurants, high-class museums, and iconic mid-century architecture. With airlines including American adding flights throughout Brazil in 2022 and a flourishing hospitality renaissance throughout the city, São Paulo is well prepared for its anticipated influx of new travelers. A must-visit destination for 2022 is the Rosewood São Paulo , located in the heart of São Paulo's Cidade Matarazzo and housed in a historic landmark building. Here, visitors will encounter 200-plus luxurious guest rooms, suites, and residences, plus six restaurants and bars and two pools. — Molly O'Brien

40. Savannah, Georgia

This coastal Georgia city is rightly famous for its atmospheric, moss-draped streets and squares, not to mention its hundreds of years of history. But lately Savannah has been boosted by creativity and innovation outside the sometimes frozen-in-amber Old Town, which means now is a particularly compelling time to visit. Make home base the brand-new Thompson Savannah 429 , a slick 13-story tower with interiors by Studio 11 Design that anchors the still-developing Eastern Wharf neighborhood. Phase one of the 54-acre development, which aims to turn a once-industrial waterfront into a contemporary mixed-use destination, includes hundreds of apartments, fitness trails, access to the Savannah River, and multiple bars and restaurants, including Fleeting , a seasonally driven spot inside the Thompson. At the same time, Savannah's other major waterfront destination has also come into its own. The Plant Riverside District, a stone's throw from Old Town, marked its official grand opening in November 2021, putting a bow on a bustling JW Marriott hotel , countless restaurants and bars, and multiple live performance venues all along a rebuilt waterfront. Not that all the action is along the river: The ever-evolving Starland District, a short drive from Johnson Square, has its share of hangouts including Starland Yard , a food truck park that's also home to the excellent Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana ; Two Tides Brewing Company , which pours hazy ales and delicious sours in a super-cool taproom; and Troupial , a Venezuelan cafe. You'll also want to pack Wildsam Savannah , a newly released field guide that helps visitors understand the layers of history (and the contemporary politics) that are fueling the latest renaissance in Savannah. — Paul Brady

41. Seattle, Washington

Few places offer both an urban and a natural escape in one destination — and the Emerald City might be one of the best. The city center is world-class with top hotel accommodations ( Four Seasons Hotel Seattle and Thompson Seattle ), locally focused fine dining, and countless cultural sites. Then, just minutes away from all of that is some of the most stunning outdoor recreation out there. Adding to the city's luster is the newly opened Lotte Hotel Seattle . The 189-room tower is bringing high design and refined service to the area. Charlotte , the hotel's restaurant on the 18th floor, serves up an inventive menu that is sure to become an all-time favorite dining experience. The landmark Fairmont Olympic Hotel recently completed a $25-million historic restoration of its public spaces, quickly becoming one of the most Instagrammable spots in town. Plus, its buzzy new culinary showpiece will debut in the months to come. Before leaving Seattle, don't miss a meal at celebrated pasta specialist Brian Clevenger's new restaurant, Autumn . — Scott Bay

42. Sedona, Arizona

Makito Umekita/Travel + Leisure

With tourism already surging thanks to the Instagram fame of attractions like Devil's Bridge, Sedona garnered even more of a following during the pandemic among cooped-up city dwellers enthralled by the destination's red rocks and energy vortexes. In 2022, set your sights on North America's first landscape hotel, Ambiente , home to 40 standalone accommodations (called "atriums"), most with private rooftop decks perfect for stargazing. Opening in May, the sustainability-focused retreat will offer on-site trailhead access — further immersing guests in the Sedona landscape while combating traffic along the city's main highway — and reactivate an ancient waterway to populate a stream running throughout the hotel. Experience Sedona's culinary clout right on property at Ambiente's restaurant, Forty1, housed in a refurbished airstream, or venture next door to Mariposa , the city's must-visit restaurant by chef Lisa Dahl, who pioneered fine dining in this town. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

43. Singapore

Singapore reopened to vaccinated American travelers in October 2021 with the introduction of the country's Vaccinated Travel Lane . Travelers can fly from the U.S. on Singapore Airlines' vaccine-mandatory flights ; the World's Best airline 26 years running launched Vaccinated Travel Lane flights this fall, and United Airlines plans to follow suit by January 2022. Even in the early stages of reopening to foreign travelers, the city-state is already unveiling new culinary ventures. Recently, chef Julien Royer, behind three-Michelin-star Odette, opened Claudine , and Raffles Singapore unveiled Osteria BBR 404 by Alain Ducasse, while Marina Bay Sands plans to debut chef Tetsuya Wakuda's second restaurant within the hotel in the new year. Of course, there's just as much flavor to be found at Singapore's famed hawker centers, now on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. As tourists return to Singapore, new cultural attractions follow — from the return of Singapore Art Week, beginning Jan. 14, to the recent unveiling of SkyHelix Sentosa , an open-air ride towering 300 feet above sea level, for anyone still in need of thrills after a 17-hour flight over the Pacific. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

44. Southwest Michigan

Beaches with ocean-like views were once the main draw to Michigan's southwest coast, but new high-style accommodations and hyper-local experiences are giving us more reasons to go. Where to stay with so many options? Consider the cool new motel-turned-boutique Lake Shore Resort in Saugatuck; The Fields glamping retreat with new spa tents in South Haven; the revamped, modern Harbor Grand Hotel in New Buffalo; or anywhere along the coast with high-touch Bluefish Vacation Rentals , which has killer lakefront homes now stocked with handmade local goods. Hop on the new pedestrian/bike trail in Union Pier, and definitely shop two new woman-owned standouts: the beautifully curated Haven and Ariane Prewitt's AP Cottage, scheduled to open this spring. Women are showing off the culinary scene, too, with everything from a special saison ale — winner of the 2021 Great American Beer Festival — at woman-owned Waypost Brewing Co. , to new herb-inspired cocktails at James Beard-winning chef Melissa Corey's Penny Royal Café & Provisions , to James Beard nominee Abra Beherns' Granor Farm , where dinners return this year in a new glass-enclosed barn. — Nina Kokotas Hahn

45. St. Moritz, Switzerland

If you're on the hunt for glitz, glamour, and powder for days, look no further than St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Alpine ski town has long been considered the birthplace of winter vacationing. Tourists first flocked to the mountain town in 1864 , when hotelier Johannes Badrutt took a few British travelers to the community, promising them bluebird days all winter. It wasn't long until others learned about this hidden winter oasis. Skiers and winter sports enthusiasts flocked to the mountain, which has now hosted the Winter Olympic Games not once, but twice. It's an ideal place for ski bunnies too, thanks to its luxury shopping, and its numerous Michelin-starred restaurants . This winter, head to St. Moritz for its fantastic events like White Surf (Feb. 6, 13, and 20, 2022), an international horse race that takes place across the frozen Lake St. Moritz, and the Snow Polo World Cup 404 (Jan. 28-30, 2022), which happens to be the world's only high-goal tournament on snow. Book a stay at the Badrutt's Palace Hotel , which officially reopened on Dec. 3 for the 2021/2022 season and offers guests the chance to try their hand at high-octane winter sports like skijöring, snowkiting, tobogganing, and even private helicopter tours to the peaks of Piz Bernina and Piz Palü. — Stacey Leasca

46. St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida

The beaches of St. Petersburg and nearby Clearwater are consistently ranked among the best in the U.S. and even the world , but there's more to this destination than white sand, pristine waters, and 361 days of sunshine per year. St. Pete/Clearwater offers more than 30 museums and galleries featuring world-renowned artists like Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso, as well as the largest collection of Salvador Dalí's work outside of Spain. One could say brewing the perfect beer is also an artform that St. Pete/Clearwater has mastered, with its trail of 35+ locally owned craft breweries. Playfully nicknamed the " Gulp Coast ," complete your experience with a digital passport that tracks your beer-sampling progress. These year-round offerings mean you can visit any time, but head over in June 2022 to revel in the 20th anniversary of St. Pete Pride , the largest Pride event in Florida, hosting events for everyone from friends and families to couples and solo travelers. — Jessica Poitevien

47. Todos Santos, Mexico

Todos Santos is one of Mexico's pueblo mágicos, or "magic towns," and locals are working to retain its history and culture while embracing the steady stream of travelers who have begun venturing an hour north of Cabo San Lucas to discover its charm. The area saw a handful of new boutique resorts pop up in 2021 that provide luxury amenities while keeping the rugged land and local flora the centerpiece. Wellness-focused Paradero describes itself as a "landscaping project" that just so happens to have luxurious suites, and El Perdido , an all-villa resort less than five miles south, provides all-terrain vehicles so visitors can get to Los Cerritos beach, the local surf break of choice. Oceanfront Rancho Pescadero 's multimillion-dollar transformation will be complete in the spring. Bookings for its oceanfront villas and penthouse rooms — some with private rooftops and plunge pools — open in January. Todos Santos has fully embraced farm-to-table dining, with Javier Plascencia's orchard-adjacent Jazamango leading the way, and Santa Terra , a cosmopolitan oyster bar meets arts and entertainment venue concept, is in the process of adding multiple bars and restaurants, plus a glamping site and amphitheater, according to its developer, "without chopping down a single tree." — Nina Ruggiero

48. Udaipur, India

After an extremely challenging 20-month closure, India reopened to vaccinated travelers on Nov. 15, 2021. Those looking toward South Asia in the new year, perhaps to see the Taj Mahal in Agra or hit the Goan beaches, should make sure Udaipur is on the itinerary. The city of lakes in southern Rajasthan is thought of as the most romantic Indian destination (even called the "Venice of the East") — but it's not just for honeymooners. From the vibrance of Hathi Pol bazaar and Shilpgram , an artisanal compound on the outskirts of the city with a festival set to return on Jan. 22, to the serenity of Lake Pichola, the artificial lake made in the 14th century, Udaipur is a city where you can fully immerse in Rajasthani culture. A hub of Indian luxury, Udaipur is now home to the country's first Raffles hotel, which opened in October. This private island hotel on Udai Sagar Lake is accessible only by boat — something of a trademark for the over-the-top hotels of Udaipur. Meant to be a flagship hotel in the Raffles portfolio, complete with brand staples (think: bars, both Long and Writers), 101 lavish suites, Rasoi cooking school, and lakeside open-air restaurant Belvedere Point. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

49. Wales, United Kingdom

The only path in the world to follow the whole of a country's coastline, the Wales Coastal Path celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022. Walking its 870 miles would take three months, but its most spectacular stretches can be seen in one visit — and in style. St David's in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, is Britain's smallest city with a mere population of 1,600 and is home to a Medieval cathedral , a luxury hotel inside Roch Castle , some excellent pubs, and the upscale St David's Gin & Kitchen . Hiking paths with unbeatable coastal vistas are within easy reach (try the St David's Head loop ) and pass neolithic tombs and hillforts. — Jamie Carter

50. Yucatán, Mexico

Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán, has emerged as one of Mexico's most popular cities thanks to its lively restaurant scene, a busy calendar of cultural events, and a relaxed tropical atmosphere. Increasingly, however, travelers are venturing beyond the city to explore the state's unspoiled nature reserves, ancient Maya sites, and sprawling haciendas — a number now converted into hotels. Among the destinations that are drawing travelers to Yucatán are El Cuyo, a quiet beach town that was long a closely guarded secret of windsurfers. Now visitors can also enjoy gourmet Mexican fare at the El Chile Gordo restaurant and boho-chic lodgings at the new Casa Mate . In Espita, a charming colonial town near Valladolid, is the Casona los Cedros hotel which opened in summer 2021. Sisal, a historic port in the western part of the state, has attracted new interest since being named a Pueblo Mágico at the end of 2020. A new highway completed in April now connects Sisal to Hunucmá (and then beyond to Mérida) making it easier for beachcombers to visit, and perhaps spend the night at the cool Club de Patos 404 . — John Newton

51. Bonus: Space

This was a monumental year for human spaceflight — not only did NASA and SpaceX achieve a regular cadence of astronaut launches for the first time since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, but space tourism has also lifted off in a major way, making space a top destination to visit in 2022. And it's a realistic trip, too, so long as you have the budget for it. Both Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic succeeded in taking passengers to space on short suborbital hops this year, and each company plans to ramp up those flights in 2022 — Virgin Galactic already has more than 600 bookings. The price for a quick jaunt to space? A few hundred thousand dollars . If you have an even bigger budget (say, a couple hundred million dollars), you could charter your own orbital flight in a SpaceX Dragon Capsule, as did entrepreneur Jared Issacman with his Inspiration4 mission in September. There are also tourism trips to the International Space Station in the works; Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa launches on his multi-day journey in December, courtesy of space travel agency Space Adventures and Russia's Roscosmos space agency, which plans to take even more " citizen space explorers " to the orbiting laboratory in the near future. Of course, not everyone has pockets deep enough to cover space travel, but more affordable journeys are on the horizon. Startup Space Perspective plans to launch high-altitude balloon rides to the edge of space in 2024 , for the relatively low price of $125,000. Potential dealbreaker, though — the balloons don't actually reach space, maxing out at 100,000 feet in altitude, while space is considered to begin somewhere between 264,000 feet (50 miles) and 327,360 feet (62 miles). But hey, at least there's a bar on board. — Stefanie Waldek

2 days in San Diego – a complete itinerary

the shores of La Jolla near San Diego

Day 1: La Jolla, Old Town & Gaslamp

Grab a quick breakfast in san diego.

Wake up in sunny San Diego. I mean, San Diego has excellent weather year-round, so let’s hope for full sunshine for ya!

Grab a quick breakfast – you have a lot to see! Eat a fast, light breakfast or grab something on the go. Trust me, you’re going to have lots of delicious food these next few days.

Your weekend in San Diego starts in La Jolla

weekend in San Diego - visit La Jolla - arial shot of shore

Every time I’ve been to the San Diego area, I’ve come to La Jolla. There’s so much to do and see!

La Jolla is a posh area with vivid blue waters and high-end shopping. They refer to it as ‘ San Diego’s jewel of the sea ‘ for good reason.

I especially love to walk the cove and watch the sea lions frolicking and diving off the cliffs into the ocean. Even if you’ve been to excellent zoos, it’s just not the same as seeing these huge creatures in real life.

La Jolla is a romantic spot for couples to take a walk. It’s also a great spot for families.

You’ll likely see artists or vendors selling trinkets. On the weekends street performers will give you a good show, too.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a kayak tour of the La Jolla Cove. Watch tiger sharks and explore the nearby cave. This is the first of many kayaking adventures my husband and I ever went on and it was a blast!

sea lions on the shore in La Jolla

La Jolla Shores location:

You’ll want to head toward Prospect Street in downtown La Jolla where it’s a short walk to the coast. There’s not exactly an address but Google can get you close. 🙂

Parking in La Jolla

Get here early to find the good parking! There’s 2 hour maximum street parking or they’ll give you a ticket. (Don’t ask me how I know.) Or you can park in a public parking garage for a fee, $10-$15 depending on how long you stay.

Day 1 lunch in La Jolla (with a view)

So if you’re in southern California, you should definitely eat seafood. My favorite place is Duke’s. It comes with a phenomenal view overlooking the ocean. The best seating is outside on the upper level.

I’ve been to Duke’s several times with large parties and small, everyone has loved the food! The fish tacos are excellent. Read Duke’s reviews on TripAdvisor.

Lunch location:

Duke’s address is 1216 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037

La Jolla Gelato, anyone?

If you’re in the mood for something sweet after your lunch, stop by Bobboi’s Natural Gelato . Their gelato is perfection. I’ve had several flavors and it’s all divine.

And if you like pistachio flavored anything, it’s a must try at Bobboi’s. While their flavors change daily, you’re sure to find something you like.

Bobboi’s in La Jolla location:

Your gelato stop is at 8008 Girard Ave #150, La Jolla, CA 92037

Next up: Old Town San Diego

Old Town San Diego museum from 1800's

Old Town San Diego is a perfect spot to spend the afternoon. It’s the birthplace of California and full of history .

While there’s many reasons to visit Old Town during your 2 days in San Diego, here are my favorite:

  • Free museums and entertainment
  • Mexican food!!

You’ll also find shopping, guided tours and a whole lot more. It’s a fun place in San Diego for all ages.

I recommend wandering around the Cosmopolitan Hotel and checking out the pottery shops. In the evenings at the Casa De Reyes there’s usually a band playing, which is fun to watch as you wait for dinner.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park location:

Navigate to 4002 Wallace St, San Diego, CA 92110. This will get you to the center of Old Town and you can go from there.

Parking in Old Town San Diego:

There’s a bunch of free parking at Old Town. Unfortunately, there’s typically also a bunch of people there. I’ve had pretty good luck with parking lots C & D. Access free public parking lot C from Juan Street, driving south on Harney Street.

Parking at Old Town fills up quickly. Plan time to drive around for a bit, especially during peak hours. It’s tough but not impossible. Don’t be afraid to walk if needed and just stay positive – you’re on vacation! 🙂

Hungry yet? Dinner at Old Town

Old Town Mexican Cafe in San Diego

Okay so you absolutely need to have Mexican food while in Old Town. And there’s a ton to choose from. I mean, several entire blocks of Mexican restaurants.

It’s a salsa-lover’s dream.

My favorite place in Old Town to eat (and I’ve heard it’s THE local’s favorite, too), is Old Town Mexican Cafe .

Handmade tortillas and quality Mexican flavors are to-die-for. I’ve never had a meal I didn’t like at Old Town Mexican Cafe. Read the reviews here.

From sports bars and Irish pubs to night clubs, you’ll find pretty much any kind of nightlife in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Gaslamp location:

Downtown between Harbor Drive and Broadway streets. Bars and restaurants line 4th Avenue, 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue.

Parking in Gaslamp San Diego:

On the weekends after 6pm and Sundays the metered street parking is free in Gaslamp. However it’s usually really full.

There are several paid parking lots. I’ve used the large parking garage on 4th Avenue and F Street. It’s usually available (but not necessarily cheap).

Recommended time in Gaslamp: 1-2 hours

That’s a wrap of your first of two days in San Diego!

A breakfast you’ll remember.

eating at Hash House a Go Go in San Diego with huge breakfast plates

The USS Midway Museum is a unique museum experience – it’s all on a ship! You’ll be able to climb on an actual retired military ship, where you can see what a day in the life of a sailor was.

You’ll get to go see where they slept when at sea, their living quarters, and even check out the ship’s control center.

On the top deck you’ll get phenomenal views of the entire ship and the city! You’ll see downtown San Diego and the bridge from San Diego over to Coronado. Plenty of photo opportunities throughout the museum.

If you have kids with you they can climb in and out of various aircraft and kids love it! It’s really interactive and kids are encouraged to touch buttons, pull levers and all the things needed to fly the planes and helicopters.

USS Midway Museum location:

The USS Midway Museum is at 910 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101

Lunch on day 2 in San Diego: Ocean Beach

CAFE on the side of the cafe on the water in Ocean Beach

After your morning full of military history, head out to Ocean Beach and check out the sites and grab some lunch.

There’s so many fabulous beaches in the San Diego area and Ocean Beach is one way you’ll get fun ocean views and a great, eclectic vibe. There’s often festivals, street performers, and artist all along the boardwalk at Ocean Beach.

At the Ocean Beach pier, there’s a restaurant where you can dine over the water. The Walking on Water Cafe (WOW Cafe) serves a variety of seafood options and excellent fish tacos. (Are you noticing a theme with the fish tacos?)

From the shore the restaurant doesn’t look too far out there but prepare yourself for a small trek! You’ll definitely work your way up to a hungry belly by the time you get there!

No weekend in San Diego is complete without Ghirardelli ice cream at Gaslamp

Ghirardelli ice cream shop in San Diego - view of inside

So next up, and especially if you didn’t get to Gaslamp on day 1, head down to the Gaslamp district in downtown San Diego. Ghirardelli ice cream is a must in San Diego.

This is coming from the girl who once planned and entire vacation around Ghirardelli ice cream. That’s not even a joke.

It’s my favorite chocolate ice cream in the entire world. Stop by Ghirardelli where you can buy their lovely chocolates in more flavors than you probably ever seen in a grocery store. And of course, enjoy their amazingly delicious ice cream.

Servings are large so be prepared. You might even get one to share.

After your ice cream, take a minute to walk around Gaslamp. From affordable souvenirs to high-end shopping, there’s a ton of shops in the area if you choose to take a souvenir home.

End your 2 days in San Diego at Coronado Beach

2 days in San Diego - family chasing sunset in Coronado

To end your perfect two days in San Diego itinerary, head out to the beautiful beaches of Coronado Island.

Coronado is known for its super soft, fine white sand. There’s actually an element in the sand on Coronado, mica , that has a glittery effect on the sand. The water along the shore literally looks like glittery gold. It’s unique and very beautiful.

This beach is less crowded than many of the other beaches in the San Diego area , and it’s very clean. There’s not a whole lot of amenities at the beach (like restrooms) so plan accordingly.

But my favorite part is watching the sun set beyond the horizon. It was one of the first places and my husband and I came to watch the sunset in San Diego, and absolutely fell in love with the beach. We continue to bring our kids here years later.

This is also an awesome spot to grab a photo of your family at sunset .

While you’re at Coronado, be sure to check out the famous Hotel Del Coronado , (or ‘The Del’ as the locals call it). It’s over 130 years old and has hosted the rich and famous forever. It’s truly an icon in San Diego.

Annette Young

Sunday 27th of June 2021

Hi Nikki, I'm traveling to San Diego in August for 2 days and I loved your list of things to do. Do you have any recommendations of where to stay? 4 Adults, 2 parents, 2 adult children ages 24 and 23. Thanks in advance!

Monday 28th of June 2021

Oh fun Annette! If you want a more upscale area, you could stay in La Jolla or Coronado. Otherwise Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach have a lot of accommodation options, too. There are hotels downtown which is walkable to restaurants and nightlife, if you guys are looking for that. San Diego is pretty easy to get around but parking can be a challenge, so factor that into your stay and accommodations too. I hope you have a fantastic vacation and create lots of memories with your family!

Tuesday 6th of October 2020

Yay Cristina! Glad you're considering it now. San Diego is such a fun destination...there's always tons to do. :)

Sunday 4th of October 2020

As someone who lived in San Diego for 3 years, this is a great list of things to do during a weekend trip to San Diego. I miss it down there!!

Aww awesome! So glad to bring back the memories. Thanks for stopping by the blog today. :)

Saturday 3rd of October 2020

Definitely going to La Jolla the next time ago. I can’t get over the hash house picture. Made me so hungry!

Gian both are awesome to visit. :) And the food is delicious!!!!

We loved San Diego! We stayed in La Jolla and loved visiting the children's cove (where the sea lions are. I guess there's a lot of names for it. Luckily a local told us about it or we would have never known!)

Yea, it's a cool sight to see! They sometimes have it closed during pup season, when the mamas give birth because they swarm the area. La Jolla is just such a fun spot, so much to do!

12 Destinations Worth Your Full Two-Week Vacation

author image

See recent posts by Lara Grant

Doling out your vacation days can be tough. Whether you live in the United States, where companies don’t legally have to give workers any paid vacation days, or in the European Union, which by law has to give employees at least four work weeks of paid vacation, chances are you’re often thinking about how you’ll use them. Though even short vacations can give travelers the same benefits of a longer getaway — reduced stress and new perspective, to name a few — being able to shut off from work and daily responsibilities for two weeks may be just what the doctor ordered. And while we’d argue that any destination could be stretched to a 14-day retreat, there are some places that simply can’t be explored in less time. Look at our picks for the ten destinations truly worthy of your full two-week vacation.

Grounds at The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah a GHM Hotel

By now, nearly everyone has heard of the stunning Indonesian island of Bali . The tropical destination has it all: stunning beaches popular for surfing and partying, cultural sites that include stunning Hindu temples, rice paddies and coffee plantations that can be explored, and plenty of hotels to match every budget. Given that there are so many cities worth exploring in Bali, a two-week stay is easy to fill. Travelers can spend time practicing yoga in Ubud , reveling with backpackers in Kuta , and getting pampered at luxury properties in Nusa Dua .

Where to Stay in Nusa Dua: Samabe Bali Suites & Villas

The beachfront Samabe Bali Suites & Villas is a luxury resort located atop a cliff a five-minute drive from central Nusa Dua. Its 81 rooms are elegant and stylish, all featuring a mix of contemporary and traditional Indonesian decor, deep soaking tubs and separate showers, sound systems, and balconies offering expansive ocean views. Aside from a private beach, there are a wonderful spa, two top-notch restaurants, a gorgeous infinity pool, a kids’ club, and tons of daily activities to keep guests occupied.

travel destinations for 2 days

Most travelers heading to Peru are likely going there to see the magnificent Machu Picchu — a UNESCO World Heritage site that was an Incan citadel dating back to the 15th century. While there are trains that take visitors there, opting for a four-day hike on the Inca Trail is the choice for adventure-seekers. You’ll want to take a couple days before setting out on the trail, though. Spend a day in the capital of Lima — known as the gastronomical capital of the Americas and offering a lively nightlife — and in the charming town of Cusco , which has ample archaeological ruins and Spanish colonial architecture. Even after that, you’ve just barely scratched the surface of what the country has to offer; there’s still Lake Titicaca, Tambopata National Reserve , and surfing along the coast. Trust us, you’ll want at least two weeks.

Where to Stay in Lima: The Westin Lima Hotel

The Westin Lima Hotel is located on the outskirts of San Isidro, offering tourists an upscale, resort-like feel. The hotel features a full-service spa, a sleek indoor pool, a large fitness center, and multiple dining options, including a chic bar and a restaurant with a popular breakfast buffet. It’s also home to the largest meeting facility in Peru, making it a popular option for business travelers.

3. Thailand

travel destinations for 2 days

Situated at the continent’s southern tip, South Africa has a diverse landscape and attractions to keep all ages occupied. Its heart and soul is Cape Town , which itself offers hiking at Table Mountain , roaming penguins at Boulders Beach , and a museum documenting the apartheid. Outside of Cape Town, there are the Nelson Mandela Museum in Johannesburg , nearby wildlife conservation Lion Park, and of course, guided safaris throughout — from rustic, camping experiences to luxury glamping getaways.

Where to Stay in Cape Town: One&Only Cape Town

Certainly a top luxury option, the One&Only Cape Town is a jaw-dropping property built along a canal that’s a five-minute walk from restaurants, sights, and shops. The 131 rooms are enormous and have all the expected amenities, including Nespresso machines, bathtub, and balconies with fantastic views of the marina or Table Mountain. A vast spa and outdoor pool are on a private island that extends out into the waterway, plus there are quality dining and drinking options on-site.

8. Costa Rica

travel destinations for 2 days

Even if you only have two weeks to visit Australia , there’s no need to rule out the country down under as a good amount of it can be seen in that time. Itineraries will vary between beach-lovers and culture-seekers, but some popular suggestions include scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, paragliding over Sydney , attending a cricket match in Melbourne , and admiring the red rocks in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park . Quality time with koalas or spotting kangaroos is also on many tourists’ sightseeing list.

Where to Stay in Sydney: Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection

The views of Walsh Bay and the famous Harbour Bridge from the quirky, luxury Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection hotel are breathtaking. The 189 rooms are modern and bright, featuring iPod docks and coffeemakers, as well as sofa beds and waterfront terraces in some. Hotel features include an excellent restaurant and bar with panoramic views of Walsh Bay, a small fitness center, and in-room spa treatments.

travel destinations for 2 days

Japan , and specifically Tokyo, are more expensive than other spots in Asia, but it’s worth paying a bit more for the unique culture, renowned dining, and historical attractions. There’s a ton to do and see in the island nation, but here are some top places to start: climb Mount Fuji , eat sushi and shop the colorful Harajuku neighborhood in Tokyo , visit a Buddhist temple in Kyoto , and soak in a hot spring in Izu . And if you fancy felines, definitely make time to go to a cat cafe.

Where to Stay in Tokyo: Shinjuku Granbell Hotel

The 380-room Shinjuku Granbell Hotel is an upscale property located in the middle of the vibrant nightlife district of Shinjuku. The vibe here is contemporary and hip, thanks to designer interiors, swish murals and artwork, and a trendy rooftop bar with scenic views of the city. Sleek rooms have ample toiletries, iPod docks, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

11. Iceland

Skogafoss waterfall in Winter, Iceland

Iceland has been growing in popularity over the last few years, thanks to Icelandic airlines like Icelandair and Play offering affordable flights from the U.S. and offering long stop overs for passengers heading to Europe. Its unique landscape with stunning Northern Lights views,  volcanic rock formations, waterfalls , and geothermal hot springs makes for a stunning vacation. Learn about the 7-step ritual when visiting a hot spring like Kopavogur, or visitors who prefer chillier excursions can be awed by an ice cave . If the outdoor wonders aren’t enough, Iceland offers plenty of indoor experiences, like the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula or The Akureyri Art Museum in Akureyri. No visit to Iceland is complete without exploring its capital, Reykjavik , which offers nightlife, festivals, arts, and a wide range of eating and drinking options.

Where to Stay in Iceland: Hotel Ranga

Hotel Ranga is perfect for anyone seeking a luxurious stay in Iceland with a chance to view the Northern Lights. This scenic hotel boasts comfortable rooms, delicious on-site dining, and a prime location for exploring southern Iceland and the Golden Circle. While it can be pricey, witnessing the magical Northern Lights might make it worth the splurge. Rooms tend to be comfortable with amenities like hand-painted murals, whirlpool tubs in some cases, and balconies with scenic views. There are also shared hot tubs for guests to relax under the Icelandic sky.

12. Galapagos Islands

Blue-footed Boobies resting on a rocky outcrop in Elizabeth Bay off the coast of Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands.

Wildlife enthusiasts must visit the Galapagos Islands to see unique animals like giant tortoises, iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. Comprised of thirteen islands, only four are inhabited: Santa Cruz , San Cristóbal , Isabela , and Floreana . Visitors can hike, go snorkeling or diving, and, of course, immerse themselves in the local culture. Santa Cruz Island offers unique hiking experiences alongside giant tortoises , while Isabela Island offers snorkeling with playful sea lions, and North Seymour Island, you can marvel at the unique blue-footed boobies on North Seymour Island.

Where to Stay in The Galapagos Islands: Finch Bay

Located in Santa Cruz, Finch Bay Hotel provides a luxurious escape with private balconies in each oceanfront suite. After a day of exploring, you can relax in your hammock, lulled by the sound of the waves. This eco-friendly hotel caters to adventurers, offering exclusive yacht tours to nearby islands where you can spot unique wildlife. This 26-room hotel offers an open-air restaurant, bar, swimming pool, and kayaks and snorkeling gear.

From Los Angeles

Two stand up paddle boarders on misty morning Taken off the mountainous coast of Catalina Island California

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

Take the one-hour journey to this island 22 miles or so off the coast via the Catalina Express ferry , which departs from San Pedro, Long Beach, or Dana Point daily; once you’re here, biking and walking are the main transport modes (or you can rent a golf cart for longer drives). Catalina Island is a startling contrast to the mainland, with more than a whiff of East Coast hideouts like Nantucket: Start at the quaint main town, Avalon, and gorge on seafood that’s barely minutes from the water—try Bluewater Grill , right on the dock.

Then head inland to El Rancho Escondido , which earned acclaim for its Arabian horse-breeding program. The ponies are gone now, though, and much of the land has been deeded over to vines, where Rusack Vineyards focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Outdoorsy types can hike the entire length of the 38.5-mile Trans Catalina Trail in about four days, too, with campgrounds for overnighting along the route. The Bellanca Hotel in Avalon is the plushest perch if you’d rather have someone else make your bed—or sleep in a bed, period.

Best Weekend Getaways Palm Springs CA

Palm Springs

Palm Springs, California

Around 50 percent of the locals in this Coachella Valley hub identify as LGBTQ+, adding appeal for any open-minded, easy-going visitor. The main drag of gay bars, along Arenas Road, is a rollicking night out for anyone—and just 90 mins from Los Angeles , as long as you avoid the peak times for the drive, like Friday evenings. Come here, too, to explore the design style which was popular when Palm Springs was in its heyday: Midcentury modernism is celebrated everywhere, from antique stores specializing in sleek Danish sofas to the soon-to-open Modernism Museum, which will include installations like a 1950s-era RV, plus a gift shop (of course). Dive deeper into the history of this style via a three-hour tour with architectural historian and author Michael Stern , which includes the chance to visit private homes. Among the countless hotels decked out in midcentury-modern stylings for an overnight, the Parker Palm Springs remains the standout—a riot of color and witty touches from designer Jonathan Adler.

Paso Robles California

Paso Robles

The best things to do in Porto

Paso Robles, California

Just 20 years ago, there were about 50 wineries in and around this charming small town just over three hours from LA; now there are more than 300, and the area’s becoming more widely known for its fine Pinot Noirs and Zinfandels. The self-guided tour run by the Paso Wine Country Alliance is the quickest way to zip between vineyards, but it’s worth hiring local guide Coy Barnes, aka the Wine Wrangler , to drive you for the day if you’re keen to quaff at every tasting room. Some rooms at the Paso Robles Inn have hot tubs on their balconies (a nod to the town’s origins as a spa center) that are fed by water piped in from nearby hot springs.

Hotel Del Coronado San Diego California

San Diego, California

Beaches and green spaces are the defining assets of San Diego , just under a two-hour drive south of LA. There’s the 1,750-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve —kayak through the wetlands for an up-close view—and a namesake golf course with two 18-hole championship courses perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific; stay at the Arts & Crafts-style Lodge at Torrey Pines , right by the 18 th green. San Diego has 75 miles of coastline, featuring plenty of noteworthy beaches , most of them studded with surfers—hit Moonlight State Beach if you want to head out on the water, rent fishing gear, or snap a shot with the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop from Coronado Beach. And even if San Diego has 24/7 beach weather, don’t forget: This is the Christmas Capital of America .

From Chicago

Saugatuck Michigan

Southwest Michigan

Saugatuck and its surroundings in Southwest Michigan have recently attracted newcomers due to a focus on the state’s extraordinary produce (Michigan is second only to California in agricultural diversity). Drive two and a half hours to eat at the delicious, diner-like Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions from chef Melissa Corey, or taste some of the estate-grown vintages at Modales Wines . Work off your meal with a bracing hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for spectacular views. You’ll find all that in this corner of Michigan, plus the perennial bonus of gleaming beaches, charming all-American coastal towns, and the best sundowner spots in the state overlooking the lush waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

It might be three hours north of the city, but a trip here is like stepping decades into the past for a miles-long strip of world-class water parks. The Dells emerged as a family-friendly destination in the 1950s and has changed little since then. The best-known fun fest is the Kalahari , a resort with Master Blaster uphill water coasters plus an outdoor lazy river; but purists vouch for nearby Noah’s Ark , which boasts the largest number of water slides in the area. There are outdoorsy options for an adrenaline-powered weekend, too, like the six-acre, zip-line-filled Chula Vista Resort park. Just save room for some cheese curds—the best come from Carr Valley.

Lake Geneva Wisconsin

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Just 90 minutes north of Chicago , this resort town is the Midwest’s answer to the Hamptons or Newport , made famous by the iconic families that helped build the Windy City (think Wrigley and Sears). The waterfront offers public access for more than 20 miles, thanks to an early treaty that ring-fenced the Shore Path from any development. Otherwise, expect ritzy Gilded Age mansions and over-the-top hotels like the magnificent Queen Anne-style Black Point Estate and Gardens , now a museum, or the turreted Baker House , ranked one of the town’s best hotels. Don’t assume it’s solely a warm-weather destination, though: Winterfest in January and February is a charming, less-trafficked option than midsummer.

Door County Wisconsin

Cave Point in Door County

Door County, Wisconsin

Much like Cape Cod curls into the Atlantic, this 75-mile peninsula juts into Lake Michigan like a raised finger, and it shares much with its New England counterpart. First emerging as an artsy summer colony, it has sandy, family-friendly beaches—more than 50 public ones—and 300 miles of shoreline. Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes. Make this a long weekend, as it’s almost a four-hour drive from Chicago, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the Swedish restaurant Al Johnson’s , famous for the herd of goats grazing on its grassy roof.

From Washington, D.C.

Boonsboro Maryland

Crystal Grottoes in Boonsboro

Boonsboro, Maryland

A little over an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. , Boonsboro combines natural wonders with a sobering role in American history. Explore the stalactite-crusted Crystal Grottoes here—the Fairyland cave’s red tinge is thanks to iron oxide—or go whitewater rafting and tubing in the waters near Harpers Ferry. Then squeeze in a trip to the site of Antietam, the bloodiest battle on U.S. soil where 23,000 Civil War soldiers were killed or wounded within just 12 hours of fighting in 1862. Planning a romantic weekend? Nowhere better to overnight than Inn Boonsboro , owned by novelist Nora Roberts, where each of the eight rooms is named after a fictional couple like The Princess Bride’s Westley and Buttercup.

Alexandria Virginia

Alexandria, Virginia

It might only be a 20-minute drive away—or shorter, if you hop on the metro—but this historic town still feels like a getaway and consistently ranks among the top five small cities in the country in our Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s easy to see why: Historic architecture and cobbled streets are a glimpse back past the American Revolution to European settlers’ earliest days. Board the replica 18th-century, 110-foot sloop Providence, a Pirates of the Caribbean prop now moored here as a museum, or head to the Del Ray neighborhood for an assortment of street art that shows the city isn’t simply resting on the past. Stay at the Alexandrian, an Autograph Collection hotel right in the center of Old Town that overlooks the river from National Harbor.

Cape Hatteras North Carolina

Bodie Island Light Station in Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

It’s a long drive—around six hours—Cape Hatteras is still one of the best weekend getaways from D.C., thanks to the astonishing views and bracing air of the Outer Banks . The 70-mile-long National Seashore here was the first in the country and is anchored by the landmark Bodie Island Light Station, the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. with more than 200 stairs. Head to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for a glimpse as to why these waters earned that nickname—more than 600 shipwrecks caused by treacherous, shifting shoals. Then again, with the right captain, you can brave those waters yourself on a fishing charter that can easily reach the Gulf Stream. The choice hotel is the charming Inn on Pamlico Sound ; wake up with its seaside view, and you’ll understand how worthwhile it is to splurge on a sound-front room.

Great Smoky Mountains West Virginia

Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Yes, it’s an eight-hour drive to reach this ridge, but the jaw-dropping scenery will make the effort more than worthwhile—and we’re not just talking about the sight of a statue of Dolly Parton as you reach the end, erected in her honor in the legend’s hometown of Sevierville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the NPS network (and free to enter, too). It spreads across 500,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains, straddling two states; the easiest entry point from D.C. is the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg. Once you’re in the park, start walking: There are 800 miles of trails in total, including a portion of the official Appalachian Trail. You can also enjoy a guided tour on horseback operated from several stables dotted around the reserve; just make sure to call ahead and book . The peak times for visiting include leaf-peeping season, of course, plus early summer, when the flame azaleas are in bloom. This is a year-round park, though, with plenty to enjoy even in winter, when the views from high perches like Clingman’s Dome are particularly impressive. In season, you can camp at one of ten different grounds (reserve a spot here ) or book a room at one of the hotels in Gatlinburg, which effectively serves as a resort community adjacent to the park.

Lake and wetlands with greenery and shrubbery and a small river leading to a small pond against a larger body of water...

Cassadaga, Florida

The hub of Volusia County, just east of Orlando and around four hours from Miami , is Cassadaga—a town whose residents will likely know you’re coming. Homes here are occupied by psychics and folks who generally believe in life after death, reincarnation, and the power of the spirits. Come to the Spiritualist Camp and check out the list of mediums and healers taking bookings that day, working on everything from past life regression to aura photography. One standout is Louis Gates , who grew up here as the child of two psychics; ask him about his childhood, as he has intriguing stories about life in Cassadaga, as well as a sixth sense ($50 for a half-hour session). There’s also a hotel in town .

Combine a look into your future with a glimpse at Orlando’s past: The Downtown Orlando Historic District is full of grand old mansions that offer a glimpse of how things used to be. This self-guided walking tour will let you explore all the best landmarked properties at your own leisurely pace.

Florida St. Petersburg Salvador Dali Museum

Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida

Is there anywhere that captures the essence of Florida more completely than St. Pete? It’s relaxed, rimmed by gorgeous beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and resolutely determined to let any visitors shuck off their worries within minutes of arriving. If you haven’t decompressed over the four-hour drive, make for Paradise Grille immediately, where you’ll find dinner, ice-cold drinks, and acoustic music. Spend the rest of the day at Honeymoon Island or Caldesi Island State Parks, two of the area’s best waterfront spots. There’s another side to the city, too: The Dalí Museum , a longtime anchor of the culture scene, was recently joined by the Imagine Museum, which showcases the studio glass movement of the 1960s.

Key West Florida

Key West, Florida

The so-called Conch Republic has made its name as a kooky hideaway for America’s eccentrics—it even declared independence from the U.S. for a few days in 1982. It retains that offbeat, end-of-world appeal thanks to enduring sights like BO’s Fish Wagon, a bar on the waterfront that could be mistaken for a junkyard; but the last decade has seen a major upgrade in the accommodations on offer here. Try The Reach , the adult-aimed sister spot to the Waldorf Astoria located next door, which has its own private beach. Walk over to the Bahamian Village, with its ice cream-colored cigar makers’ cottages, and spend a lazy brunch (heck, the whole afternoon) al fresco at Blue Heaven , surrounded by its flock of resident chickens.

Aerial view of Florida Everglades

The Everglades

The Everglades, Florida

It takes barely an hour to hit the entrance of Everglades National Park from Miami, an almost 4 million-acre swampy prairie filled with rare crocodiles and dozens of remarkable birds. Skip the most popular route along the Tamiami Trail, and instead duck in just past Homestead at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance , which is the best way to reach Flamingo , the only settlement actually inside the park. From there, it’s a windy, 40-minute drive south to the tip of the Everglades. There are trails en route—Nine Mile Pond is a canoeing trail even newbies can manage—before you hit the 19th-century settlement, named after the pink birds that flock here (likely not actually flamingos, but  roseate spoonbills, though that’s not quite as snappy a placename).

Take boat tours of the backcountry from the marina in Flamingo, or book a houseboat to get some sleep and keep exploring the next morning. Just remember to wear long pants and pack industrial-strength bug spray in abundance—the mosquitoes can be a menace here, year-round.

From Dallas

The water in Buffalo Springs at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma is full of green plant life

Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Chickasaw Country, Oklahoma

Drive just two and a half hours and cross state lines to explore one of the most noteworthy Native American areas in the U.S. It was here, in South Central Oklahoma, that the Chickasaw Tribe relocated after being forcibly driven from their ancestral lands near the Lower Mississippi in the 1830s. In the almost 200 years since, they’ve established a new homeland in Chickasaw Country, including an impressive center to learn about their culture, where there are artifacts, stomp dance performances, and a historically accurate recreation of a village from the 1700s.

Stay at the Chickasaw-operated Artesian Hotel , with views out across the countryside, and be sure to pack your hiking boots. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is Oklahoma’s oldest national park area, with plenty of activities for travelers: It has plenty of short and easy trails like Bison Pasture and Veterans Lake, as well as superb fishing in the manmade Lake of the Arbuckles, with catfish, perch, and bass in abundance.

Fredericksburg Texas Downtown

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and wine country, Texas

Fredericksburg is the best base for exploring Texas wine country , just over a four-hour drive from Dallas . A 14,000-square-mile stretch with more than 30 wineries, it’s the second largest wine region in America after Napa. Bending Branch, south of town, is known for its vintages of Tannat, a grape that thrives in the hot, dry climate. Don’t miss the chance to stroll around the charming, historic downtown founded in the 1840s by a Prussian baron—stay at the Hoffmann Haus , a German-inflected B&B, to feel the history.

Round Top Cafe in Texas. Image shot 2005

Round Top, Texas

If whimsy were a place, it would be this offbeat town three hours south of Dallas . It becomes an antiquing hub each spring, luring 200,000 or more shoppers to browse the bric-a-brac, but there’s also superb shopping year-round at stores like the 1920s-era farmhouse Townsend Provisions . Hotel Rancho Pillow is the mascot for Round Top, a riot of bohemian color where owner Sheila Youngblood rents an eclectic assortment of accommodations on her 20-acre homestead. Ask about the sheet-rocked teepee, and try riding the mechanical bull if you dare.

Palo Duro Canyon. Texas

Palo Duro, Texas

This, the second largest canyon in America after the Grand Canyon , is a suitably epic Panhandle destination about a six-hour drive from Dallas. It’s worth every minute on the road once you’re standing by the 120-mile gash in the earth that plunges almost 1,000 feet. Come to hike, bike, and ride horses; there are almost 90 miles of trails in the state park, with the most popular runs located along the floor of the canyon. Offset the exertion by hunkering down at one of the chic cabins at Dove’s Rest , with a superb view out across the canyon proper. Each cabin has a propane grill and fire pit so you can BBQ each night under the stars.

La Pelosa Beach's tranquil waters and white sands have made it so popular that you need to book your visit in advance, which will cost €3.50 (about $3.90). Staying near the beach is pricey, costing about €166 (about $185).

5. Zlatni Rat in Bol, Croatia

Translating to "Golden Horn," Zlatni Rat is a famous triangle-shaped beach on the Croatian island of Brac that extends into the ocean. As the tides and swells change, the beach also shapeshifts. Besides how stunning the beach is, it's also relatively inexpensive to visit, coming in as the second-least expensive beach locale on the index. For food, drink and a one-night stay, the average price is €96 (about $107).

4. Elafonissi Beach in Crete, Greece

Crete is beloved by travelers, and Elafonissi Beach is one of the Greek island's famous beaches. Depending on the season of your visit, you may encounter the iconic pink sand, but year-round, the beach is beautiful with calm azure waters. However, the beach isn't exactly tranquil, and gets quite crowded as the day goes on. To visit, the average cost is €184 (about $205).

3. Portoroz Beach in Portoroz, Slovenia

Nestled against the Adriatic Sea, Portoroz Beach is a gorgeous pebble beach fronting Portoroz's resort area, so you can take a break from the sun and stroll the promenade. The beach is also the cheapest on the index, costing €93 (about $103) on average for a one-day stay.

2. Mellieha Bay Beach in Mellieha, Malta

Not only is Mellieha a sheltered bay that provides gentle and warm waters, but it's also the largest sand beach in Malta, making it the perfect place for families. The beach scored high on the index for its warm temperatures and water. Visitors can rent sunbeds, swim, kayak and more. To visit, it will cost €117 (about $130) on average.

1. Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Earning the top spot on the index is the picturesque Nissi Beach in Cyprus – and rightfully so. The beach seemingly has it all: warm weather and water temperatures, and calm waters since it's located in a bay, has. In the near distance is a small island, adding to the natural beauty of the beach. "This destination ranked in the top spot across all factors, including water and air temperatures, waves, value for money and the number of 5-star reviews left by visitors," Wilson said. To visit for one night, it will cost approximately €103 (about $114).

2 Days in Edinburgh Guide: Highlights and Hidden Gems - Edinburgh skyline at sunrise with Dean Village cottages

From historic buildings to Harry Potter, there are so many amazing things to discover during a 2 day Edinburgh itinerary. Gothic towers, cobblestone alleys, and a hilltop castle lend the city a fantasy-like atmosphere. And with a vibrant arts scene and diverse restaurants, there’s no shortage of things to do in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh city skyline viewed during 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary.

This itinerary for 2 days in Edinburgh is geared towards first-time visitors to the city, with a blend of popular attractions and some lesser-known gems.

This travel guide is part of my  UK road trip itinerary itinerary, which includes over a dozen destinations from London to Edinburgh!

Know Before You Go

View of Edinburgh from Waverly Station.

Estimated Itinerary Budget (excluding transport & accommodation) : £140/person

Edinburgh uses the British Pound Sterling (£). ATMs–also known as “cash points”–are abundant, and most places in the city take card payments. However, I always recommend carrying a bit of cash for tips and the occasional cash-only place.

Like the rest of the UK, tips are sometimes included in restaurant bills. Check the bottom of your receipt for the “service” charge before you leave a tip. 10-12% is customary, though if you’re at a pub and ordering at the bar, tips aren’t expected.

Edinburgh is mainly connected by buses that criss-cross the city. However, the city is very walkable, making exploring Edinburgh on foot the most practical way to get around. Uber also operates here, in the event you need car service.

Getting to Edinburgh from the Airport

There are several options to get into the city from Edinburgh Airport. The cheapest option is to take the Airlink bus to Waverly Station, which runs every 10 minutes 24 hours a day.

The fare is £4.50 per adult, and the travel time is about 30 minutes. The Airlink buses accept contactless card payments and cash; exact change is not required.

A tram also runs from the airport to several stations in the city, including Edinburgh Park, Haymarket, and Princes Street. Tickets are £6.50 per adult, and the journey time to Princes Street is 30 minutes.

Getting to Edinburgh by Train

Edinburgh Waverly station is the city’s main train hub.

If you’re arriving in Edinburgh via the Caledonian Express, LNER, or Scot Rail, you’ll be pleased that Waverly is centrally located. You can easily walk from the station to anywhere in central Edinburgh, meaning you can save on bus and car fare.

Edinburgh has a surprisingly diverse food scene. Whether you want Japanese bento or Mexican fusion, there’s an Edinburgh restaurant for you.

This 2 day Edinburgh itinerary has a few recommendations, but I’ve published an entire list of the best places to eat in Edinburgh for first time visitors .

Where to Stay in Edinburgh

Street view of stone buildings and crosswalk in Edinburgh

To make the most of your 2 days in Edinburgh, I recommend staying fairly central. You can find a well-priced apartment or hotel near the University of Edinburgh campus, which is walkable to everything in this itinerary.

We stayed in a wonderful and spacious VRBO apartment in the heart of the Old Town, and it was perfectly located for exploring and shopping.

The Best Time to Spend 2 Days in Edinburgh

Autumn view of Edinburgh Scotland skyline from castle.

If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, I highly recommend visiting Edinburgh in October .

The vibrant foliage decorates the city’s sidewalks and parks, and the off-season means crowds are thinner. There are also several fall festivals to enjoy, including the nighttime Samhuin Fire Festival on Calton Hill.

August in Edinburgh sees the city transformed by the Fringe Festival , with musicians, street performers, and artists taking over the city. It’s the world’s largest arts festival, so expect massive crowds and expensive accommodation. For this 2 day Edinburgh itinerary, August is probably the worst month to visit.

If you’re looking for Europe winter travel destinations , Edinburgh is a great choice, especially during December. Between the Christmas Market, cozy pub fires, and holiday decorations at Holyroodhouse, there’s plenty of cheer to brighten your spirits in spite of the cold.

Given the amount of walking involved in this guide, I’d also recommend visiting Edinburgh in spring. April has the occasional snow shower, but the weather is generally pleasant and crowds are minimal. May is warmer, though the month’s UK bank holidays see an influx of visitors from around the country.

2 Day Edinburgh Itinerary

Day 1: castles, cafes, famous streets, and ghosts.

Watching the sunrise over Edinburgh old town is one of the best things to do in Edinburgh in 2 days.

The Meadows and Bruntsfield

Instead of diving right into the typical city sightseeing in Edinburgh, get to know the city with a morning stroll through the Meadows. This expansive green space in southwest Edinburgh is a favorite hang out spot for university students, though you’ll see residents of all ages out for a morning jog on the paths.

If you’re visiting Edinburgh in October or November, the Meadows’ trees will be bursting with autumn color. And late April/early May visitors can walk under the lovely cherry blossom trees.

Walking west through the park, you’ll eventually exit into Bruntsfield, a residential area known for its shops and excellent restaurants. Bruntsfield’s village atmosphere and beautiful facades make it perfect for escaping the bustle of old town Edinburgh.

Brunch at Treehouse Cafe

Berry pancakes at Treehouse Cafe.

If you love over-the-top pancakes and delicious coffee drinks, you’ll love Treehouse Cafe. Nestled in the cool Bruntsfield neighborhood, you’ll get to kick off your first of two days in Edinburgh with city locals.

Chocolate fans should go for the berry nutella pancakes with chocolate sauce. It’s the ultimate sweet start to a morning of exploring Edinburgh. And if dessert for breakfast isn’t your thing, you can always opt for a traditional meat and egg combo.

Candlemaker Row & Victoria Street

View of Edinburgh Victoria Street from elevated position.

Harry Potter fans and photography enthusiasts will love the curving streets and colorful buildings of Candlemaker Row & Victoria Street. You’re sure to recognize these areas as popular Edinburgh Instagram spots, or as the setting for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films.

J.K. Rowling drew inspiration from several places here while writing her beloved series. A few tombstones in Greyfriars Kirkyard lent their names to book characters, and Rowling wrote parts of The Philosopher’s Stone  at the nearby Elephant House cafe.

You’ll also find a bit of Scottish lore on Candlemaker Row. At the intersection of George IV Bridge stands a black Skye Terrier statue known as Greyfriars Bobby, a loyal dog who guarded his deceased owner’s grave for 14 years.

The iconic memorial is a popular meeting place for friends and tour groups. And despite what you may have heard, please do not rub Bobby’s little nose for “good luck”. You’ll only damage the statue.

After you’ve explored this Edinburgh walking route, follow Candlemaker Row to Grassmarket, then turn left and go up Vennel. This elevated path offers some unique views of Edinburgh Castle as you head down the steps.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle facade, an essential part of the 2 day Edinburgh itinerary.

When I asked some acquaintances what to see in Edinburgh in two days, I was surprised to hear them suggest not going to Edinburgh Castle. They argued that it’s just a crowded, overpriced tourist attraction, and it wasn’t worth seeing.

Normally, I try to avoid touristy places when I travel, but in this case, I’m very glad I ignored their advice. In fact, the castle made my list of top UK bucket list ideas !

A rich history , interesting exhibits, and stunning panoramic views make Edinburgh Castle a must-see for any 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary. Here are a few tips for making the most of your visit:

  • If you have the option to visit on a weekday, do so. The castle will be less crowded and more fun to explore.
  • When heading towards the crown jewels exhibit, go through the regular entrance (not the “Jewels Only” one) to walk through a fascinating Scotland royal history exhibit, complete with music and full-size models.
  • Take advantage of the amazing panoramic views of Edinburgh wherever you can. There are areas all around the castle walls where you can walk up and look out at the city. There are some unique photo options near the cannon holes as well.
  • Day-of admission is £18.50, but you can save £1.50 and skip the queue if you buy your tickets in advance online

Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo with building covered in red ivy.

I know the zoo is considered a “touristy” thing to do, but the Edinburgh Zoo is truly fantastic.

It’s the most beautiful zoo I’ve been to, with tons of greenery and several viewpoints over the Pentland Hills. They are also highly involved in conservation and education work, which is reflected in every exhibit.

Penguin lovers will delight at the daily “penguin parade” and expansive swimming area. And if you’ve always wanted to see a real-life panda, Edinburgh Zoo is home to two! The zoo is pretty sizeable, so plan to spend at least 3 hours exploring the exhibits and gaining new knowledge.

Getting to the zoo is simple and cheap. Just take either the Lothian or Airlink airport bus for under £2. You can even pay via contactless card on Airlink. Both bus lines have stops around the city, but the easiest way is to catch the bus from outside Waverly station.

As of November 2021, tickets must be purchased online in advance unless you are an RZSS member. General admission is £19.95 for adults.

Despite the price, I think it’s one of the best Edinburgh day activities whether or not you’re traveling with children.

Dinner at a Traditional Scottish Pub

With only two days in Edinburgh, it would be crazy not to visit one of the city’s many traditional pubs. Leather furniture, wood paneling, and real fireplaces will transport you to times gone by. There’s nothing like sinking into a wingback chair with a glass of Scotch on a chilly evening.

Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar on Candlemaker Row is an excellent choice for dinner and old world atmosphere. It’s also far enough from the Royal Mile that it won’t be jam-packed with the dinner crowd.

Edinburgh Ghost Tour

Person walking along dark street in Edinburgh old town.

With its brooding architecture and mysterious atmosphere, a late night ghost tour is the perfect way to cap off your first of two days in Edinburgh.

Several different tours operate across the city, but the best ones take you through the underground vaults .

Once the hub of Edinburgh’s criminal world, the multi-story vaults beneath Blair Street are a must-see. Legend has it that the vaults are still haunted by the ghosts of departed thieves, bootleggers, and ladies of the night.

The only way to access the underground vaults is with a tour, so book your tickets in advance!

Day 2: Hiking, Holyrood, Museums, and The Royal Mile

Calton hill.

View of Edinburgh from Calton Hill.

Climbing Calton Hill for a glorious sunrise could be the highlight of your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary. Depending on the time of year, you might even get to sleep in and still catch those first morning rays.

If early mornings aren’t your thing, don’t worry. The panoramic views over the city make Calton Hill an amazing destination no matter when you visit. After a somewhat steep 15 minute climb, you can see from Holyrood Palace all the way to the North Sea.

The hill itself also boasts several landmarks, including the Romanesque pillars of the National Monument and round Dugald Stewart Monument.

Holyrood Palace

Close-up of Holyrood Palace facade.

From Calton Hill, it’s a short walk to Holyrood Palace, the royal residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

When the palace isn’t being used for royal ceremonies and engagements, visitors can pay £16.50 to explore inside, including the Royal and State apartments. Outside, take a stroll through the palace gardens and adjacent Holyrood Abbey.

As of November 2021, there are limited tickets available for same-day purchase, so it’s best to book online in advance .

If you’re visiting Edinburgh in December, you’ll get the added bonus of elegant decked halls for the Christmas season. I think I’d brave the Scottish cold just to see this resplendence in person!

Edinburgh St. Giles Cathedral with blue copper statue.

Stretching from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile is home to hundreds of shops, restaurants, and popular spots for city sightseeing in Edinburgh. Even if you don’t plan to spend a penny in one of the stores, it’s still worth walking the entire length of the road (and stopping into side alleys).

Here are a few highlights on the Royal Mile:

  • Just up the street from Holyrood Palace is Canongate Kirk, where famous Scots are entombed.
  • The beautiful and iconic St. Giles Cathedral towers over the western end of the Mile. Its spire forms part of the city’s skyline, and weekend visitors can pay £6 for a rooftop tour with panoramic views of Edinburgh.
  • Mimi’s Little Bakehouse is the perfect stop for a sweet pick-me-up. If you love chocolate, I highly recommend the decadent brownies.
  • If you’re looking for quality tartan scarves, head inside Balmoral or Dunedin Cashmere for a variety of luxurious options. And if you have Scottish ancestry, you can ask them to look up your family pattern and direct you to the right tartan!
  • For the best shortbread, skip the Royal Mile shops in favor of Pinnies & Poppy Seeds. This cozy bakery is just a block off the Mile, on St. Mary’s Street, and they have multiple shortbread flavors on offer.

Princes Street Gardens

Once you reach the castle end of the Royal Mile, head one block north to reach Princes Street Gardens. Located right in the middle of Edinburgh, the gardens offer a nice respite from the Royal Mile crowds

In the warmer months, you’ll find people sprawled out on the green lawn, relaxing with a good book. There’s also a tree-lined walkway that runs past the towering Scot Monument, and walking this way offers fantastic views of the city.

Lunch at El Cartel

If you’re wondering where to eat in Edinburgh for something other than traditional British fare, look no further. El Cartel dishes out Mexican street food so good, it filled the taco-shaped void in my heart that formed after I left Texas.

The Thistle Street location feels intimate and a bit funky, with classic margarita machines churning out rotating flavors. Once inside, start with a bowl of guacamole and opt for plantain chips for dipping. After that, you can’t really go wrong with any of the menu options, though I especially loved the Baja Cod tacos.

Scottish National Gallery

Exhibit room inside Scottish National Gallery with five oil portraits and black statue of man.

I always try to save money when traveling , and the Scottish National Gallery is a fantastic, free activity for this 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary. Of all the art galleries I’ve visited in Europe, it felt the coziest, especially the second floor.

Here, you’ll find famous works like Olive Trees  by Van Gogh and multiple Monet paintings, among other treasures.

Scotch Whisky Experience or Camera Obscura

The interior of Scotch Whisky Experience is a must for two days in Edinburgh.

It’s time for the choose-your-own-adventure portion of this Edinburgh itinerary. Personally, I visited both the Scotch Whiskey Experience and Camera Obscura, but I had more than two days in Edinburgh.

Read the summaries below to decide which activity is right for you (or try and squeeze in both)!

Scotch Whiskey Experience

Even if you aren’t a whiskey connoisseur, the Scotch Whiskey Experience is a fantastic activity for anyone over 18. Young kids can accompany their parents, but will probably get bored after the first portion of the tour.

The experience touches on all five senses and covers everything from how Scotch is made to how each region imbues its own flavor on the whiskey. I particularly enjoyed the IMAX theater-style tour of Scotland’s whiskey-producing regions, which comes with a scratch and sniff card!

There are multiple price tiers depending on how much Scotch you want to sample. And the tour ends at a beautiful whiskey bar and lounge, where you can fortify yourself with single malts and blends from all around Scotland.

Book your skip-the-line Scotch Whisky Experience tickets here!

Camera Obscura

With five floors of interactive mind games and colorful exhibits, Camera Obscura is a natural choice for anyone traveling with kids. From playing with plasma to navigating a mirror maze, the attraction is a fun contrast to the other popular attractions in Edinburgh.

But Camera Obscura does have a historical element: the actual “camera obscura” apparatus at the top of the building is nearly 200 years old. Visitors can experience a magical show just like the original Victorian guests did long ago.

Catch Some Live Music

In a city famous for live music, it’s only natural to round out this 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary with a rousing musical evening.

You’ll find plenty of opportunities for live music in Edinburgh any night of the week, from traditional folk at The Royal Oak to more modern tunes at Bannerman’s Bar . Grab a pint, take a seat, and relax after an action-packed two days in Edinburgh.

The 10 most popular Labor Day hot spots, best times to travel by car, according to AAA

Still figuring out how to spend your Labor Day weekend ? Well, if you’re thinking about hitting the road for a last-minute getaway to close out the summer, you might want to see this.

Just like the Memorial Day traffic this year , overall domestic travel during the Labor Day weekend is expected to increase by 9% as opposed to last year, whether it's by car or flying, according to a study by AAA.

Where are people traveling to this coming Labor Day weekend? Let’s take a look.

Top 10 Labor Day weekend destinations

According to the study by AAA , these are the top ten Labor Day destinations:

  • Orlando, Florida
  • Anchorage, Alaska
  • New York City
  • Juneau, Alaska
  • San Francisco

The best and worst times to travel by car

If you're planning a road trip for Labor Day, it’s good to keep in mind the best time to get the show on the road.

According to INRIX , if you plan to travel on Thursday and Friday before Labor Day, you should begin traveling in the morning and avoid the afternoon and early evening hours, as the roads tend to be crowded.

If you’re going to leave on Saturday, the best time to leave is in the afternoon. When you return from your trip on Sunday or Labor Day, leaving as early as possible is best to avoid severe traffic jams.

Gas prices will be lower this Labor Day weekend

If you are taking a road trip, you will likely be paying less for gas this Labor Day weekend than you did last year.

The average gas price per gallon last year was $3.81—and this year, it should be around $3.50.

Alaska cruises are really popular during Labor Day weekend

Many Americans visited Alaska by cruise this summer—it’s become a popular domestic destination during the hot weather.

At this point, it’s probably too late to book a Labor Day trip to Alaska. Experts say if you want to take a cruise to Alaska for next year’s Labor Day, now’s a good time to book because prices are exemplary.

International travel is less popular than last year

International travel during the Labor Day weekend is not as popular as domestic travel for Americans this year.

Per the study, international travel is down by 4%, while the cost to travel internationally went up by 11% from 2023. Eight out of 10 cities for international travel booked through AAA are in Europe (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Mexicali, Mexico, were the other two not in Europe).

TSA readies for busiest Labor Day travel period on record, provides top travel tips to help airline passengers prepare

WASHINGTON — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared to screen more than 17 million people during what is expected to be the busiest Labor Day travel period on record, which will run Thursday, August 29 through Wednesday, September 4. The peak travel day is projected to be August 30, when TSA expects to screen 2.86 million people.

Air travel volumes this summer are the highest the agency has seen in its history. The agency expects passenger volumes to be 8.5 percent higher than last year during this time, and has already screened 239.8 million people since Memorial Day weekend, which is an average of  2.7 million per day. The top ten busiest travel days in the agency’s history have all occurred this year since May 2024. The agency reached a new milestone on July 7, when Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) screened more than 3 million people in a single day.

“People are traveling more than ever this summer and TSA along with our airline and airport partners stand ready to close the busiest summer travel period on record during this upcoming Labor Day weekend,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “I commend our vigilant workforce, from our TSOs on the front lines at airport security checkpoints across the country to those behind the scenes, working hard to keep the transportation system secure—especially as we continue to roll out new checkpoint technology that improves security effectiveness, efficiency, and the passenger experience.”

TSA is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck® lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes. With this increase in travel volumes, TSA recommends airline passengers travel with ease by enrolling in the TSA PreCheck Trusted Traveler Program , where members do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, food items, and light jackets at the checkpoint. TSA PreCheck members are reminded to make sure their Known Traveler Number (KTN) is in their airline reservation so it appears on their boarding pass.

REAL ID will go into effect in less than nine months, starting May 7, 2025. Airline passengers will soon need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification when flying. If the driver’s license is not REAL ID-compliant, they must have another form of acceptable identification, such as a U.S. passport. REAL ID driver’s licenses and identification cards have a small star in the upper right corner indicating they meet federal regulations that establish minimum security standards.

Last-minute summer travelers are finding the best deals in years

Held off on taking a summer vacation? You may still be able to squeeze in one on the cheap.

Record numbers of travelers have been flooding airports since the pandemic, but U.S. airlines now face a surplus of empty seats after racing to add capacity. Many are slashing prices to fill them, making bargain flights more readily available than they have been in years, travel agents and industry experts say.

Summer Daily Life In Athens

“Deals are easier to find this summer since prices are already so low,” said Hayley Berg, lead economist at the travel booking site Hopper.

Flights overall were at least 5% cheaper as of June than the year before, government inflation data shows. Hopper estimated domestic airfares for August are down about 6% since a year ago, and it flagged supercheap domestic round-trip deals this month — like $69 for Chicago to Baltimore and $82 for New York to Nashville.

And it’s not just airfares — costs are cooling off for car rentals and hotel rooms too. They were down roughly 6% and 3% year over year, respectively, in the federal data and are now about flat in most cities on Priceline.

For clients with a little flexibility in their travel dates, I’ve been able to get very low airfare for last-minute trips.

Ashley D’Aristotile, owner of Flyaway Travel

The discounts expand the map for late-season travelers and coincide with a broader value push this summer . Restaurant chains from McDonald’s to P.F. Chang’s are dangling promotions to hang on to frugal customers. The gambit is largely working , with major retailers’ recent sales helping prop up consumer spending and the economy as a whole .

Vacation-planning procrastinators are having better luck this year.

On July 26, Debra Banton, 61, and her 26-year-old daughter Rachel booked a trip overseas departing in two weeks.

“We usually plan way in advance, never last minute,” said Banton, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina. But Rachel works full time while attending school, leaving little down time, and since she’s never been to Europe and is getting married next May, they figured now’s their best shot.

“With just four weeks’ planning time, I was able to secure the last few rooms at some fabulous resorts in Greece and get them a great deal on business-class air to Athens,” said Kimberly Hilliard, their Annapolis, Maryland-based travel adviser with Front Porch Travel.

While prices typically come down heading into the fall, the current end-of-summer season is a “unique window” for travelers who haven’t booked far in advance, said Jesse Neugarten, the CEO and founder of Dollar Flight Club.

The flight alert site said the average international airfare from the U.S. over the next three months is $401, and the average domestic flight costs $212 — collectively down an average of 29% from the same period a year ago.

“For clients with a little flexibility in their travel dates, I’ve been able to get very low airfare for last-minute trips,” said Ashley D’Aristotile, the owner of Orlando, Florida-based Flyaway Travel.

Lousson Smith, a flight expert at the travel site Going, agrees: “At this point in the summer, if you’re flexible, you can find something really nice under $150 nonstop from major markets, but anything under $200 this late in the game is a decent deal.”

While the costs of U.S. flights to Europe soared during the post-pandemic travel boom, Hopper estimates international airfares have fallen 9% since last summer. Round trips from Boston to Dublin, for example, have been going for as low as $415 this month, Hopper said, and there are $461 options between Chicago and Paris.

Domestically, the Southeast is seeing some of the best bargains, according to Priceline, with both Miami and Nashville making its “most affordable” list for August.

Travelers make their way through the airport

“For families who still have several weeks before school officially begins, you can take advantage of lower prices in some Southern states like Florida and Tennessee,” said Christina Bennett, a consumer travel expert at Priceline.

When it comes to accommodations, “markets and individual hotels will be looking to fill their rooms by offering last-minute deals and discounts,” said Jan Freitag, national director of hospitality analytics for CoStar Group, a real estate data firm.

“In general and on average, room rates are not up a whole lot,” and occupancy is down in some cities, he said. The average daily room rate in June was up just 1.5% year over year — lower than the overall inflation rate of 3% — and ticked down even further, to a 1.3% annual increase in the last week of July, CoStar data shows.

The availability seems unusual for this time of year … and many hotels are throwing in extras.

Chirag Panchal, founder of Ensuite Collection

But bargain hunters will need to be nimble, Freitag said: “A deal may be offered on Wednesday for that Saturday, so the question is: What is your appetite for booking ahead or booking last minute?”

Chirag Panchal, founder of the Dallas-based travel company Ensuite Collection, said that type of appetite has been strong lately.

“The availability seems unusual for this time of year, and I’ve been receiving a lot more last-minute travel requests than usual,” he said. “We’re seeing great availability in places like Colorado and New York City, and many hotels are throwing in extras such as complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, special amenities for kids and extra nights for free.”

If you’re ready to go and have a few destinations in mind, experts suggest signing up for one of the free fare-alert services offered by various travel platforms so you can act fast. Or use a tool like Google Flights to search for the cheapest destinations from your nearest airport. And while travel agents charge their own fees, many get access to reduced fares and packages that may not be available on booking sites.

But don’t worry if you can’t sneak in a summer vacation before August wraps. After all, the season doesn’t officially end until three weeks after Labor Day, and many travel promotions look set to continue.

“I’m finding quite a few locations offering discounted packages moving into September,” said Jennifer Byrne, CEO of the Tropical Travelers, an agency in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
