The Mountaineering Club is one of the most active clubs in the University, with activities to suit all abilities and skill levels! Whether your interest is walking, climbing, scrambling, orienteering, winter mountaineering, or simply enjoying the great outdoors, BUMC has something for you! Take a look at our photo galleries to get a taste of what we do.

We run regular weekend and day trips throughout the year for walking, climbing, mountaineering and orienteering. We visit amazing locations all over the UK such as Snowdonia, the Peak District, Dartmoor, Portland… the list is endless! There are also trips to France during the Easter & Summer breaks and Scotland during ISB. You can read more about our previous trips here .

As well as trips, the club goes climbing at 5 different indoor walls and bouldering centres in Bristol on Wednesdays, Saturdays and evenings mid-week. We also run several teaching sessions to learn belaying and lead-climbing. In warmer weather, we can often be found climbing outdoors at local crags.

As well as running walks on our weekend and day trips throughout the year, we also run “Sunday Walks” every fortnight. These are a relaxed walk in an area near to Bath that normally takes around 3 hours. They’re free and open to all students, staff and friends (you do not need to be a BUMC member to come along).

Orienteering:

As we develop orienteering within the club, we will do biweekly training, with regular Sunday events at local fells and forests, and several weekend trips with other universities. Focused on navigating whilst running, orienteering is a great activity for improving mountaineering skills. We look forward to welcoming beginners and more experienced runners to BUMC.

We meet at a different pub every Thursday for a relaxed evening social, whilst also having regular larger socials, including sober socials. (Don’t worry, we never put pressure on drinking alcohol, and there are always non-drinkers at our socials.)

BUCS & Competitions

We enter teams into BUCS for both Climbing and Orienteering who represent the uni at competitions. We also regularly enter local competitions that are open to all skill levels.

Reasons to Join

  • Subsidised trips all over the UK and Europe
  • Free equipment hire and skills training
  • A vibrant, relaxed social scene, with no pressure to drink
  • Regular weekly activities
  • Opportunity to meet like-minded people
  • Train and represent the university in competitions

Snow Sports Society

Sports clubs, about snow sports society.

Established in 2009, we are one of Bath Spa's largest societies - catering for the people who love the snow. We welcome people of all abilities, from beginners to pros and everything in between. Our society is as diverse as it comes, with even members of the committee being spectacularly terrible at skiing (as discovered during our 2019 trip to Avoriaz). Each year, our society runs an annual Ski trip before Christmas to the exotic mountains of Europe. Although our trip is obviously a big factor to us as keen snow-fanatics, it’s not essential to those of you who are ski/boarding virgins. Most of our members have previously joined because they’re simply enticed, or have heard great things about our legendary SNOCIALS. However, if you are up for exploring the Alps with us, our mixed ability group ensures that there will always be someone on the same level as you, willing to give a helping hand. We welcome anyone and everyone, regardless of your snow history – join for the socials, join for the trip or even join to learn! We offer something for everyone. If you're keen on bettering your racing or freestyle abilities, then come join us on one of our fortnightly training sessions! Along with our good friends Bath Snow Sports, UWE and Oxford Brookes, you can take advantage of the excellent but affordable facilities at Gloucester Dry Ski Slope. If you're feeling confident enough, you will also have the opportunity to represent Bath Spa Uni in the Kings dry ski slope competition which runs annually throughout the year. Ultimately we’re just up for having a good time wherever we go, be it on the trip or at home in Bath. A favourite among Bath Spa students, we’ve received some of the best feedback - not only from the trip but also how we run as a society. Having a fairly large number of members means you’ll meet and get to know new people who, chances are, you’ve never seen before. We hope you can join us and get a real taste of Spa snow. Make sure to follow us on Instagram for regular updates, Snow Love xxx

In 2023 UBSC runs the biggest single-uni ski trip in the UK, not to mention the wildest. We brought world-class DJs, bands, huge aprĂŠs and a variety of different events every single day. Sounds like your thing? Then keep up to date for all the info on our next trip on Facebook.

Check out the aftermovie from Avoriaz or  VT  to see just some of the madness that went down...

BEGINNERS & IMPROVERS TRAINING

If you're new to snowsports and keen to learn, join us and get involved!

This year we had almost 100 beginners join us on a subsidised 5 session package of coaching in the UK, including lessons at dryslopes and snow domes. It's the perfect way to start your snowsports journey or just to set yourself up for our unmissable trip at Easter. We've even had beginners moving onto our regular training and joining the race team! There really is no better time or place to learn than at uni.

If you're interested in our Beginners package, come along to freshers fair, message UBSC on instagram, or email [email protected] to stay in the loop.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED TRAINING

uni of bath ski trip

With dedicated race and freestyle teams for skiers and boarders, we have an unbeatable training setup to take your sport to the next level. We run weekly training sessions on Tuesday nights to Mt. Gloucester, one of the best dry slopes in the country. We also do freestyle and racing at snow domes nearby, and from September, UBSC will become the only UK university snowsports club to have its own freestyle ramp , located at our sports complex in Coombe Dingle.

To improve your mobility, we have weekly trampoline sessions at Freedog trampoline park  and stength and conditioning in the gym! These are  open to all abilities  and the professional coaching will be sure to take your riding to the next level.  We always look forward to introducing people to the competitive side of the sport we love, so don't think you need to be a pro racer to come along!

After scoring a record 140+ BUCS points in 18/19, UBSC is the choice for the serious athlete too . UBSC leads the way for athlete support, culture and facilities access. We're also one of the few universities to run our own Alpine training camp before Christmas  for a week of intensive coaching, all at a hugely subsidised price, for those who have been training in the UK with us.

With regular competitions throughout the year on dry slopes and in snow domes, there are plenty of opportunities to let your competitive side out.

Send us a message or sign up at the Welcome Fair for more info! We'd love to see you join us.

uni of bath ski trip

UBSC have weekly socials on Wednesdays at The Brass Pig on The Clifton Triangle. With free pizza and the (un)welcome appearance of the Shot Ski, The Brass Pig provides the perfect warm-up to the night. We then join all the other sports clubs for the university-wide Sports Night at Gravity or Mbargos. Our socials are great fun and we strive to create a welcoming environment for everyone, so whether you want to talk about that 30ft drop you hit on your season or have never skied and just want to get involved, come join us! Drop us a message on facebook and Joe and Lexi (our social secs) will gladly welcome you into the club.

We also run awesome one-off events each year, including the fancy Snow Ball and the infamous Valley Rally. UBSC socials and events have a reputation for a reason.

INITIATIVES

Equality and diversity.

UBSC welcomes all Bristol students and we're committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment at all of our events. We don't tolerate discrimination in any form and want to continue working to make Bristol the best place to take part in sport.

We recognise there is more that can be done to improve the inclusivity of snowsports and welcome all feedback on our performance and strategy.

Snowsports has traditionally been unaffordable to many due to the high costs associated with travel and the necessary equipment. To improve the accessiblity of our sport, we reinvest the majority of our membership revenue into subsidising our sports opportunities in the UK, from beginner training sessions to national competitions. We have also raised money for Snowcamp who engage inner-city young people through snowsports to offer them life skills training, nationally recognised qualifications and work experience.

Environmental sustainability is paramount to our sport as climate change continues to worsen the conditions in the mountains. UBSC is committed to minimising the environmental, social and economic impact of our activities internationally and locally, raising awareness of the importance of sustainability to snowsports and beyond. Our ADH 2018 ski trip was fully carbon offset, and we are now entering the third year of our partnership with Protect Our Winters (POW). POW's goal is to flight climate change by mobilising the UK outdoor community.

As a club, we place great importance on charity work. Last season, through raffles at out multiple large scale events, and successful lockdown #RunForTheMountains fundraiser, we raised over ÂŁ3000 for charities including  POW , Off The Record (OTR) , SnowCamp and Teenage Cancer Trust .
