Customer Reviews

We have returned from our Safari in Uganda and Kenya with nothing but great experiences and memories. The organisation and planning of all the details was flawless. From your first contact with me to the final details, everything was so easy and quickly done. During our trip, every detail, every transfer, every connection was Perfect! It was such a relief knowing that we never had to worry about the next day of travel. So again, “THANK YOU” !!

the african safari co

I have arrived back from my Southern African holiday……a customised trip organised by The Africa Safari Co., a trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and into Namibia.

Everything worked like clockwork, a true testament to The Africa Safari Co. and their contacts, and their knowledge of Africa. Every guide was there on time, and highly visible, to greet me at the many meeting points throughout the journey. Every booking accurately made, and a well documented itinerary. The itinerary selected by them was varied, engaging, and full of the excitement and mystery promised in all the stories, movies, books and fantasies we all have as children, while growing up, and as adults.

Thank you The Africa Safari Co. …… a truly memorable time.

Terre Wohling

My first time to Africa and The Africa Safari Co did not disappoint! I explored Namibia and the staff on the ground there, the transport, accommodation & activities were all exceptional! If you are considering an African adventure most definitely use The Africa Safari Co!

the african safari co

We spent 3 weeks in Africa, and 2 of those were travelling with The Africxa Safari Co. We started with 3 days in South Africa. Picked up at the airport on time, taken to our accommodation. Spent the next two days being shown around with a wonderful guide. Off we went then to Botswana, for another 3 days. We stayed at Kasane at the Bakwena Lodge. OMG this place is AMAZING! We saw all of the big 5 other than rhinos, within the first two days! We then went to Victoria Falls and yet again we were blessed with great accommodation and I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this company!

the african safari co

We have just returned from a wonderful safari in Kenya. The organisation of the tour by The Africa Safari Co. meant that nothing was left to chance and all we had to do was enjoy our holiday. Thankyou The Africa Safari Co.

the african safari co

I have travelled twice with The Africa Safari Co. The first in 2015 when we went to Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Trekking and again in 2017 to Tanzania & Kenya. With 25 years experience in Africa their product knowledge is amazing and the staff really know their stuff. When putting itineraries together they offer great suggestions to work within time and budget restrictions. The local ground operators have been fantastic, very friendly with a great knowledge of the game and areas we travelled. If you are looking for an amazing Africa experience don’t look any further than The Africa Safari Co.

the african safari co

I just wanted to let you know, George and Ana have returned from their honeymoon, and they said it was everything they hoped for and more!

They were so happy with everything, and I’d like to thank you and Susie for all your recommendations and expertise in putting this together.

Your documentation was also the best of any I’ve ever received.

So a big thank you and I look forward to putting my next Africa booking with you!

The Top 10 African Safari Tours in 2021

Scott Bay is a magazine editor specializing in travel, architecture, and gear. He was previously an assistant editor at Travel + Leisure . His work has also appeared in Wired , Architectural Digest , Wallpaper , Robb Report , Saveur , Daily Beast , and more.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

A safari tops most of Travel + Leisure readers' bucket lists — a trip that many spend a lifetime daydreaming about , saving for, and eventually splurging on. On this type of adventure, travelers pull out all of the stops and have high expectations. One of the best ways to have that dream trip live up to expectations is to hire one of the best safari outfitters, as voted by the discerning readers of T+L.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The safari companies favored by T+L readers owe much of their success to the talented advisors, who get to know their clients so they can create truly customized trips. "We couldn't have worked with a better group of people," one reader said of No. 5 winner Travel Beyond. "They were friendly, efficient, informative, and made sure our entire trip went smoothly. We never had a care."

Each safari outfitter also displays a deep connection to the national world and conservation efforts . Readers felt that No. 10 andBeyond particularly excelled in this area: "They have an excellent commitment to local communities, protecting wildlife and the environment." Another reader said of No. 9 Wilderness Safaris, "Their commitment to local communities and protecting wildlife is outstanding."

Read on to see the full list of T+L readers' picks for the best safari outfitters — all of which not only make spotting the Big Five easy but also arrange unparalleled perks and accommodations.

1. Micato Safaris

This company has been voted onto T+L's list of the world's best safari outfitters every year since the awards' inception — and for good reason. The family-run business has deep roots in Kenya, and its owners' love for the country (and continent) is evident in the way they operate. Each itinerary, whether private or with a group, is tailored to be the most luxurious, comfortable, and exciting adventure possible. Readers couldn't say enough kind words about their recent trips. "Never met tour guides or staff that were so friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and the locations and the culture," wrote one reader. "They seemed to have a sixth sense for anticipating our needs. It was really something." A few more touted Micato's reputation, with one saying, "Simply the best safari outfitter in Africa. Bar none."

Travel tips for African Safaris

When to safari africa.

When you visit Africa, the optimum time to go is determined on your itinerary. Even though the weather is pleasant throughout the year, seasonal changes do influence animal movements. Since Africa is located in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are the exact opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere.

Our Africa safari packages are meticulously crafted to ensure that you see the continent at its finest. The dry season varies from place to region in Africa, but this is often the best time to go. Tours in Tanzania and Kenya are at their finest between July and October, when temperatures are milder and the annual Great Migration takes place over the Serengeti and Masai Mara . The months of April through October are ideal for African tours that take you to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town, as the weather is milder and more pleasant for safari game drives and city sightseeing. It is incredibly hot and dry in the deserts of Morocco and Egypt , so if you want to travel there, the best time to go is in the spring or fall.

Dining Safaris for Africa

Africa’s culinary diversity cannot be summed up by a single dish. The variety of spices used in Moroccan cooking reflects the country’s proximity to the Mediterranean, the Arab world, and Andalusia. Tagine, a stew of meat (beef, chicken, or lamb) and vegetables, and couscous are staples of the Moroccan diet. Nile Valley agriculture provides an abundance of legumes and vegetables for Egyptian cooking, which also draws significantly on Mediterranean flavors. Meat meals like shawarma and kebab are favorites across the Middle East and North Africa.

distinct regions of Kenya and Tanzania feature vastly distinct cuisines because of their dependence on locally sourced ingredients. The cuisine served at your wildlife lodges on our African safari is influenced by British colonial cuisine. Because of the large number of Indian and South Asian immigrants living there, curry and other spicy dishes are also rather common.

“Rainbow cuisine” is the name given to the diverse dishes that are popular in South Africa. South Africa also has a thriving wine industry, and its white wines are widely regarded as among the best in the world.

Our escorted tours cover a wide swath of Africa, giving you the chance to sample dishes from all around the continent.

Packing tips for Africa

Travelers should pack for hot, sunny days during their time in Africa, with the possibility of cooler evenings. You should bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and other sun protection gear in case the weather changes suddenly. When visiting religious places in Morocco and Egypt, visitors should dress modestly and cover their shoulders and knees. Lightweight rain gear may also be useful to have on hand, as showers are possible at any time of year.

Packing on an African safari ? Try to stick to subdued hues so as not to frighten the wildlife. In order to keep everyone safe and comfortable in safari vehicles, rigorous luggage restrictions are imposed. Hard suitcases are not permitted, so be sure to use a soft, flexible duffel bag instead.

We will, of course, offer you further packing suggestions and other travel preparation details once you have booked your safari to Africa.

Opt for a personalized African safari packages. We arrange for you to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in the place of your dreams, whether it’s a luxury tour in Kruger National Park, a gorilla tracking expedition in Rwanda , or a culinary tour of South Africa. Dear Robb Report : We’re safari veterans—we’ve hit all the major sights, from gorilla trekking in Rwanda to private game reserves in Botswana. We’ve seen the Big Five, and were lucky enough to watch a kill in the Masai Mara. We love Africa , and safari, more than anything, but we want our next trip to feel fresh, and offer us something more than just retreading our past adventures. Can you help? Yours, Safari Sandy

What a lucky conundrum to face, Safari Sandy. Certainly, you’ve experienced the breadth of what the sub saharan continent can offer—though you don’t mention Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. If you’ve not helicoptered over there, make sure to add to your to-do list ( and make sure to do that on a sunny day, as the rainbows generated by the spray in sunlight are captivating). But you’re not alone— Roar Africa’s Deb Calmeyer says it’s a commonplace challenge, as many of her clients have planned a dozen or more visits. She has three approaches she deploys for those seasoned safari-goers.

The second approach for veteran Africa visitors is to think less about place, and more about theme . Are you an adrenaline-chasing family? What about quad biking through the bush in Namibia, or mokoro boating in Botswana, with a night or two sleeping under the stars in barefoot luxury at Xigera’s treehouse—which Calmeyer and her fellow Travel Masters just voted the greatest suite in the world? For pro-am photographers, Calmeyer’s planned a private helicopter-focused tour, zooming up the Rift Valley, the Saguta desert and Lake Turkana in Kenya, stopping down at each for aerial and up-close shots. People-to-people is another option, perhaps focusing on learning more about cultures in the region rather than animal-spotting. Special permits are required to visit a handful of tribes, like the San in Botswana and the Pökoot in Kenya.

“They’re the last pastoral tribe left, and it’s an hour and a half by helicopter to the north,” she says. “You can’t believe these people still exist, but it’s extraordinary. You can go and have a meal with them, as long as you’ve paid to get the special permission.”

Her third and final recommendation is to focus more deeply on a single place, and look for the experiences that locals might enjoy. Remember, of course, that the bush holds as much fascination for those living and working in it as for visitors.

“For clients like this, I might start planting seeds about the places I knew as a kid growing up that aren’t going to be on the five-star circuit,” explains Zimbabwe-born Calmeyer, nodding to Lake Kariba and Mana Pools, for example. This inland sea is downstream from Victoria Falls; there are lodges ranged around its southern edge though reaching them for most visitors requires an extra private charter.

Hopefully those suggestions will help you plan your next trip or two – and if you need more inspiration, here are a few more ideas.

The unsung participants at the 2024 Safari Rally

Four women played a key role in the event's success behind the scenes.

• Female photographer, timekeepers and a superfan share their side of the rally story

• Their dedication is a testament to the indomitable spirit of women in motorsports

Timekeepers on the sidelines of the race

When Kalle Rovanpera and Jonne Halttunen emerged as top finishers at the 2024 World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya and stepped onto the podium at Hell’s Gate National Park to freely spray champagne over colleagues and rally officials, one might have been forgiven for presuming that this was an all-mens' event.

That perception, however, would be wrong. Apart from four all-womens' teams participating in the race, four Kenyan women made crucial contributions to the event.

Here, bird story agency sheds light on these four women.

CHARLENE TUJA

In the male-dominated field of rally photography, Charlene Tuja stands out as the only Kenyan woman accredited to shoot at the 2024 WRC Safari Rally Kenya.

The presence of so many male photographers, some lugging longer lenses than she herself, did not intimidate her a bit. As a Pool Photographer, Tuja shot, edited and uploaded images on the go, ensuring the media was provided with timely, appropriate and quality images to go with stories and updates in real-time.

Tuja's journey into photography started more than a decade ago, when she started taking photos with a family member’s film camera. By the time the WRC made a comeback to Kenya in 2021 after a 19-year hiatus, Tuja was working for a firm assisting in the rally's event communications.

She felt it would be more exciting to have a front-row seat in the action, however, so she applied and became accredited as a Safari Rally photographer in 2022. She did so again in 2023 and in 2024.

She said the adrenaline, speed, sound, fans and atmosphere made the early mornings, late nights, getting covered in dust and general physical torture well worth it. She also encourages other women to join motorsports photography.

“Women are naturally drawn to remembering things. Capturing it on camera and having evidence makes you see things from a different point of view and challenge yourself to look for different perspectives other than your own, so you get to learn more. Motorsports is very exciting.”

EDNA OTIENO and SHARON CHEPNG’ETICH

Rallying is racing against the clock. Points are awarded or lost depending on how long a driver takes to complete each stage of the race. With this in mind, it is clear that timekeepers are some of the most important officials in any rally.

Each rally stage has several timekeepers working at the start and finish of the stage. We caught up with Edna Otieno and Sharon Chepng’etich, who were stationed at the start of the Wolf Power Stage, the last competitive section of the 2024 WRC Safari Rally Kenya.

Otieno, who has been a fan of cars and motor-racing for much of her life, said, “A time controller makes sure the drivers are allocated the correct time in the race and makes sure the winner is correctly picked.”

Participating in this year’s rally gave her a joy that she finds hard to describe. Contributing to the correct awarding of the rally winner is an unquantifiable joy, she said.

And being a woman in a male-dominated space made her particularly proud. She was also thrilled that four all-women teams competed in 2024, compared to two in 2023.

It is hard to separate Chepng’etich from her love for speed. The excitement of the cars revving, the skid starts and the flying gravel particles fills her veins with adrenaline, she said. She also enjoys that she gets a front-row seat at the only World Rally Championship event run on African soil.

Otieno, Chepng’etich and other timekeepers use GPS Clocks connected to specially developed apps running on customised tablets to inform each driver when they should start the stage, and to record the time the driver takes to complete the stage.

They both wish that more women would participate as timekeepers so they could share the excitement of the experience more widely.

SYLVIA KARIMI

It’s a few minutes after sun-up at the start of Soysambu Stage, and already, there are fans and spectators here, two hours before the first rally car comes through. They do not want to miss the action, so everyone is angling for the best vantage of rally cars being flagged off to tackle the 29km stage.

Two fans, Sylvia Karimi and her son Zane, have made the 1-hour journey from Nakuru city, northwest of Nairobi, to be here. They had to wake up while it was still dark to make sure they had a good view of the action. For Sylvia, seeing Zane’s eyes light up and hearing the excitement in his voice whenever a rally car passed them made the sacrifice of sleep on a Saturday morning well worth it.

Karimi feels there are many women viewers, supporters, fans and would-be participants in motorsports, but they are underrated, restricted to urban driving and do not show themselves.

“More women should show up and shine out, just like in biking,” she said.

PAST STRIDES

Several past Safari Rally events have seen major wins for women. In 2022, Maxine Wahome, then aged 26, made history by becoming the first Kenyan woman in the rally’s long (60+ years) history to win the race's WRC3 category.

Wahome’s win came almost five decades after Orie Rogo Manduli and co-driver Sylvia Omino made history by becoming the first black African women's team to grace the Safari when they entered the 1974 edition.

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

the african safari co

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

the african safari co

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Tswalu, South Africa: the ultimate destination for a luxury safari

At Tswalu in South Africa , diamond tycoon Jonathan Oppenheimer has created the kind of luxury safari that most of us can only dream about, writes Catherine McGregor

It was when the mountains caught fire that we started to worry. A summer storm had rolled in over the Korannaberg ranges and lightning was slashing through the vast desert skies, setting the hillside alight before quickly being extinguished by the torrential rain. On the verandah, the clink of ice in our pre-dinner cocktails was being drowned out by the roar of thunder. It was time to go inside.

The summer rains bring life to the Kalahari Desert, the arid sandy savanna that straddles the border of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. At Tswalu Kalahari reserve in South Africa the rain can transform the parched land literally overnight. The landscape, once barren, is suddenly carpeted by thick tufted grass, spiky gemsbok cucumbers and tiny yellow dubbeltjie (little devil) flowers. For visitors, the odd lightning strike is a small price to pay for such abundance.

Located on the southern edge of the Kalahari, not far from the Botswana border, Tswalu is a truly unique safari experience. The property has been owned since 1999 by the billionaire Oppenheimer family, who once controlled the majority of South Africa’s diamond industry through their controlling stake in De Beers and now use their immense wealth to support their conservation and philanthropic efforts. Tswalu is not only South Africa’s largest private wildlife reserve, but arguably its most remote, at around 10 hours’ drive from either Cape Town or Johannesburg. Isolated and ultra exclusive, Tswalu just might be the ultimate destination safari.

The distance by road doesn’t bother most guests, since hardly any of them drive. Tswalu has its own private airport and offers a direct charter air service from both Johannesburg or Cape Town. For Tswalu’s mega wealthy clientele, flying in is a no-brainer. That airstrip is a game-changer, says Nigel Pace, Tswalu’s head of hospitality. “Yes, we’re really remote – but in terms of access, we’re actually easier to get to than places like Kruger or Sabi Sands.”

After touchdown, guests are collected by their drivers and depart for one of three luxury camps dotted across the vast reserve. Motse, Tswalu’s original camp, features nine guest suites, or legae (“home” in the local Setswana language) and has the feel of a relaxed-chic boutique hotel. The recently opened Loapi is a collection of six extraordinarily beautiful tented camps , each with a dedicated homathi (house manager) and chef. All six Loapi residences are located at least 100m from each other, with no communal or shared guest areas or services, allowing for an incredibly private stay.

My stay was at Tarkuni, an exclusive-use homestead designed for multi-generational families or parties of friends. Tarkuni accommodates up to 10 guests in five suites, each with their own private verandah, arranged around a living area featuring a spectacular double-height fireplace. Upstairs is a spa treatment suite and games room; out the front is a swimming pool and waterhole where baboons and antelope regularly come to drink.

With a total maximum of 40 guests in an area almost twice the size of urban Auckland , it’s hardly surprising that the word “private” comes up so much at Tswalu. If you’re staying at Loapi and Tarkuni, you can quite easily avoid ever seeing another soul, save for your own small team of staff. On top of that, every booking guarantees you a private 4×4 safari vehicle, including a dedicated guide and tracker, for the duration of your stay. More than anything, it’s this that puts Tswalu a cut above most other luxury safari experiences.

Having your own vehicle doesn’t only give you privacy – it makes each game drive a totally personalised experience. Want to focus on tracking lesser-known sub-species like the desert black rhino? No problem. Want to stay out all day? Can do. Tswalu’s guides and trackers know the reserve like the back of their hands, and are trained to create for you the most memorable safari experience possible. As your stay continues, your priorities can change, and the value of a private vehicle only increases. With your own vehicle, you’ll never find yourself stuck with day-one newbies who need the safari basics explained or want to stop to photograph every passing kudu – although if that’s something you still want to do, that’s absolutely okay too.

Tswalu's location in the Kalahari Desert means it’s home to rare species such as the desert black rhino and the Kalahari black-maned lion. Photo / Marcus Westberg

A Tswalu safari is as unique as the land itself. The aridity of the Kalahari means you won’t see any elephants or hippos here, and the sheer size of the reserve can sometimes make spotting animals a challenge. Don’t arrive expecting a Kruger-style wildlife buffet, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see plenty of amazing sights, like a lioness and her cubs contentedly chowing down on a zebra carcass at the edge of a water hole. For 10 minutes we sat quietly in our vehicle, snapping photos from just a few metres away, as the desert sun slowly set behind the horizon.

While it isn’t the place to spot the Big 5 around every corner, Tswalu boasts a remarkable number of species that are rarely seen elsewhere. Along with more common species like oryx, wildebeest, cheetah, buffalo, zebra and giraffe, the reserve is a wonderful place to see rare and endangered species including the Kalahari black-maned lion, desert black rhino and African wild dog. Tswalu offers a lucky few the chance to see the Temmick’s pangolin, one of the world’s most elusive mammals; if you get the chance to accompany the resident pangolin scientists on a nocturnal research outing, grab it.

Tswalu is also home to multiple colonies of meerkats, who have become used to human visitors through a painstaking habituating process. These charmingly gregarious creatures are best spotted in the early morning as they leave their burrows for the day, or at dusk, when they return. Like all wild creatures, however, no viewing is ever guaranteed. Despite the best efforts of Tswalu’s tracking team, we sadly didn’t see any meerkats on our visit. It’s a tribute to the power of the Kalahari landscape that our sunrise walk to the burrows, and the Jeep-side breakfast afterwards – magicked seemingly out of thin air by our guide – remains one of my favourite memories of our stay.

Along with preserving wildlife, making memories is what Tswalu is all about. On our drive back to the homestead, our guide told us that bush dining is one of the experiences guests request most often – whether that means a fully hosted braai with butler service and a mobile kitchen for a group, or a secluded gourmet picnic for two (with a staff vehicle positioned nearby, just in case). Other once-in-a-lifetime experiences include a night under the stars in one of Tswalu’s “star beds”, private camps whose level of luxury puts most other glamp-outs to shame.

There’s one special Tswalu experience that towers above all others, and that’s dinner at Klein Jan, the incredible on-site restaurant founded by Michelin-starred South African chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. It’s the sort of dining experience that relies in part on the element of surprise – so if eating here is on your bucket list, look away now. The magic begins when you pull up outside what appeared to be a ramshackle farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. This is actually the Klein Jan entrance building, where we sat on the stoep, or verandah, and drank cocktails as the thunderstorm rolled in.

Klein Jan, a restaurant founded by Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, offers a culinary journey through South African history using local ingredients. Photo / Dook

We were guided through the farmhouse and into a door on the side of what looked like a disused water tank. Suddenly we were descending a staircase wrapped around a waterfall, then led through more jewel-box spaces and into a spectacular glass-walled dining room. While Klein Jan is open to non-guests for lunch – people fly in and out just to spend a few hours eating here – dinner is for Tswalu guests only, and is included with every two-night stay. The tasting menu at Klein Jan is a journey through both South African culinary history and the natural world of the Kalahari, utilising such unfamiliar ingredients (at least to me) as fever berry, xigugu (a traditional corn and peanut paste), kaiings (crackling) and boerbok (South African goat). As we ate, lightning carved through the sky, the landscape fleetingly illuminated before being plunged back into the inky black darkness of a desert night.

The next morning dawned clear and bright, the previous evening’s torrential rain already absorbed by the thirsty red sand. For our last experience, we were going horse riding – a prospect that initially had me slightly anxious, but which, I was assured, was perfectly safe in this part of the reserve. After the exhilaration of the previous few days, a quiet hour on horseback was the ideal end to our stay. With no engine noise or whirr of camera shutters, we could hear the Kalahari’s birds bursting into song in celebration of the rain. Above, the desert sky was enormous and blue; around us, the ochre sand was stippled with summer green. At our dismounting site, the riding guides removed our horses’ saddles and bridles. As we climbed into our Jeep for the last time, the horses set off at a gallop, back across the savannah and towards home.

Aiming to deliver the camaraderie and raw challenges not seen since the days of the testing Camel Trophy and original Paris Dakar from the 1980s, the KALMAR Beyond Adventure Trans-Africa event offers the unique opportunity of traversing 5 500km across challenging African landscapes behind the wheel of a Safari-spec Porsche.

Scheduled to take place from June 1 to 19 , the KALMAR Beyond Adventure Trans-Africa will see drivers take on different environments — desert, savanna, grasslands and mountain — as they cross five countries — Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and, for the first time, Angola — over a 19-day guided expedition.

The participating drivers will pilot specially prepared Porsche motor cars, ranging from 911s to Cayennes and even Caymans. Each KALMAR Beyond Adventure car boasts ‘robust’ specification. The latter includes roll cages; raised suspension, replete with rally-spec shock absorbers; full underbody protection; ‘rugged’ off-road tyres; and ‘cosseting’ sports seats.   An array of additional equipment, such as spare wheels and fuel cans, are also present.

As mentioned, participants have the choice of piloting a Porsche 911, Cayman, or Cayenne — modern or classic.

The Porsche 911s include the air-cooled, RS-R G-Series, 964/993-based KALMAR RS and the water-cooled 996-based KALMAR RS-6, the latter of which is the firm’s latest creation. Alongside sits the KALMAR RS-C, which is based on a 987-generation Cayman, while the KALMAR CS and KALMAR CS-R are created from variants of the Porsche Cayenne. Participants can also swap cars mid-route to experience all models.

Terrifying moment elephant charges at tourists as safari truck driver suddenly stops

The elephant attacked a safari truck at Kafue National Park in Zambia on Saturday

An elephant charged at an African safari truck with tourists in Zambia and flipped the vehicle, killing an elderly American woman.

The harrowing moment was captured on 45-second video by an individual on the truck at Kafue National Park. A lone five-ton bull elephant can be seen in the distance running towards the vehicle.

‘Oh my goodness,’ a woman is heard saying.

‘Uh oh, coming fast,’ a man remarks.

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

As the elephant continues to rush through the trees and bush, the driver abruptly stops the vehicle.

‘Hey! Hey! Hey!’ someone can be heard yelling.

The elephant uses its trunk and in one swing flips the vehicle. The recording shows a chaotic scene in the tumble.

An 80-year-old woman on the Wilderness Zambia tour died from the attack, Keith Vincent, CEO of the organizing group, told the Daily Mail . She was not immediately identified.

The video showed the bull elephant pursuing the safari vehicle

Five other guests were on the tour, and one was seriously injured and four sustained minor injuries. The seriously injured victim was airlifted to a private medical facility in South Africa . All the guests were reportedly staying at the Lufupa River Camp.

The game drive was ‘unexpectedly chaired by the bull elephant’ around 9.30am on Saturday, stated Vincent.

‘Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough.’

Vincent added that management at the national park, which is the second largest safari location in the world, offered immediate assistance.

An American tourist died as the safari vehicle was flipped

’This is an extremely tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,’ Vincent stated.

‘We are also, naturally supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident. The deceased will be repatriated to the USA.’

The elderly woman died more than eight years after an American woman in her 30s was mauled to death while recording a lion at the Gauteng safari park in South Africa.
