Great first pair of "real" mountain boots. Very comfortable straight away (never had blisters!) and enough shock absorption to negotiate 15 miles on the road in the middle of a long day.

A little hot for a summer trip to non-snow situations and not enough thermal protection for really nasty Scottish snow but still no blisters or hurting ankles!

Only niggle is the poor construction of the toe area. After a week of kicking steps and articulated crampon rub, the toes now become wet looking and the leather looks waterlogged almost immediately - regardless of how much Nikwax gets rubbed/sprayed onto them.

Buy a pair then put a rubber cap over the toe or always use full gaitors and you'll be very happy.

Best all-round hillwalking and backpacking boot that I've used (and I managed to buy in on special offer!). Superb quality leather, and built to last. No need to buy the Gore-Tex version as the HBS version is one-piece and very waterproof. If it fits well (fairly wide) then it's very comfortable and supportive, though there are lighter boots on the market (e.g. Brasher Hillmaster).

Required surprisingly little breaking-in despite the traditional one-piece design. Would definitely buy again, but don't expect to as they should last for decades (as long as they're looked after).

The proverbial 'old leather boot' that other things try to be as tough as, these boots will be destined to become favourites with any buyer. Comfortable, highly protective, good water resistance, with a Vibram sole to boot (sorry!)

Superbly comfortable after breaking in. Very tough, pretty waterproof, but need regular proofing. Sole could do with a more aggressive heel. Biggest problem is that after four years the leather has cracked despite regular proofing.

Excellent leather quality, superb comfort and ease of entry. Good for people with wide feet. These boots last forever and provide excellent support even after they're used over long periods soaking wet.

These are nicely made boots except the part that goes around your ankle is like a big gravel scoop. I returned mine. No other boot I have tried or owned has had this problem.

Rather disappointed with these boots. They are confortable but I had big problems getting good drip on some of the trails in Nepal, especially on gravel. They are good all round boots for moderate conditions but they couldn't handle some conditons as well as other boots worn by people in our group.

Basargino looks like it was created in some kind of computer simulation game. And there, on a little piece of land you need to arrange cozy wooden comfortable houses, a farm, a church, a cafe and a restaurant with insanely delicious meals, an apiary, lakes with fish, a chicken coop and pastures. You also should have cows, pigs, goats and sheep. And also wolves and yaks to make the visitors even more delighted.

There is not a feminine equivalent for a blacksmith, therefore I will simply introduce Anna Biletskaya as the blacksmith. Anna, armed with a heavy hammer and an anvil, is able to forge a horseshoe for a horse in 15 minutes and a decorative horseshoe for luck in only 10 minutes. Well the last one is more in demand lately. Anna opened her smithy to visitors a few years ago. This blacksmith in a skirt shows the whole process during her short master classes: first heat a piece of metal over a fire, then take a hammer and beat it well on the anvil, pull it back, then bend it and put it back into the fire. Finally, cool and clean it.

A hot bath filled with herbs such as hypericum, yarrow, camomile and also a rejuvenating bathtub -  these are the Russian answer to the best Asian spa with plumeria flowers. Well, the Altai version looks more brutal, but you will quickly feel the great effect. The herbs are collected and specially prepared here, in "The Gold of Altai" eco-hotel on the shore of the lake. Bathhouses are warmed up in both old Russian traditional ways: the "black" banya (a smoke goes out of bathhouse through cracks in wooden walls) and the "white" banya (a smoke goes out of the bathhouse through a pipe). The professional bath attendants will help guests adjust the right amount of steam and smack them briskly all over their bodies with special bath brooms. The largest horse farm in this district is also located in the hotel area; you should not miss the chance to ride a horse at least around the local territory.
