2001 Voyager Speedometer failed

Hi all, The speedometer on our 2001 Grand Voyager (3L V6) has stopped working. The odometer is still counting, the speedo needle moves up from the rest position to zero when the car is powered up, all of the other instruments (rev counter, fuel, temperature etc.) all appear to be working fine. There are no warning lights on, checking with a code reader gives no stored error codes. I was hoping that the code reader would give the road speed under live data, but that doesn't appear to be supported on this car :-( Any idea what I should look for next? Thanks, Matt

Is the transmission still shifting or is it stuck in 2nd gear? If so, I'd replace the output speed sensor on the transmission case body under the drivers side. Bob ..
The transmission still shifts - so does that mean the output speed sensor is likely to be working? Matt

Are you sure that the needle hasnt gone completly around the other side an trying to come up pver the peg? HAs the battery been replaced recently o had a weak start? Hold the trip button down with the ket off, then tur the key on as you are holding the trip button (5 sec) and try to force th cluster into a self test Glenn Beasley Chrysler Tech - Message posted using http://www.talkaboutautos.com/group/rec.autos.makers.chrysler More information at http://www.talkaboutautos.com/faq.htm

The battery on the car has been weak, it was actually replaced a couple of days ago (whilst I was away and after this fault emerged). Any good ideas as to what this means? Speedometer Not Working!

Asked by Foggieloon , October 2, 2017

Hi everyone,

I have a 2007 2.4 Executive Voyager in black.

The speedometer is not working but all other gauges are working fine.

It is not the needle at wrong side of stop problem and re-calibration has no effect.

My local garage has had a look at the issue but they were unable to rectify it.

They ruled out sensors and fuses!

Is there anything I can check without incurring heavy garage charges to trace the fault?

My electrical knowledge is somewhat limited and any clear guidance in this matter would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the fast response.

The vehicle is a 2.4 manual petrol.

I have attached the garage report and it seems they they have checked the sensor?

they also supplied me with known fixes for this problem also attached

Mine was looking same as the one that I replaced with, did they remove the sensor or just tested..?

A manual car will not go into limp mode because of the speed sensor, an auto probably.

Mine was identical with the replacement one, the difference (not visible by eye) is the plastic gear was worn and not engaging with the shaft...

I don't remember where I put the old one but if I find it I'll upload a picture so you can see there is no difference.

Is wither that or the gears o the shaft...is very unlikely but if you have access to a second driveshaft try replacing it...

The vehicle does not go into limp mode.

You may be right about the sensor. It may be worth purchasing a new sensor.

Is it a pig of a job?

I have a workshop manual on cd

and a haynes manual.

Like

Is not difficult, a bit of oil will come out, it can always be refilled. I got one from scrap yard, if I remember well was £8 or £10... It is held by one bolt( again if I remember well) 10mm size.

When you fit the "new" one, play it a little bit or move the shaft slightly left and right so it settles in properly..

Hope you sort it.

On the first picture it says road test, did that involve a diagnostic machine hooked to the ECU and the speed came up?!?!

Hi foggieloon.

I had a similar problem with my GV.

It started with an intermittent speed reading, that sometimes stuck at 55mph and if you went over a bump the needle would jump up to 70mph.

Then wouldn't work at all.

I traced this down to a bad connection from the speedo (tacho) needle connections to the circuit board.

It's an easy fix, I just soldered the block back onto the pcb and carried out the dash self calibration then happy days, it's not let me down since ?

I hope this helps.

Speedometer/transmission/please help!

I have a 2001 Chrysler Voyager and a few days ago, the speedometer needle suddenly started jumping all over while my car was at a full stop. It’s fine while in park, and it’s only when I have the breaks on at a full stop–I can decelerate just fine, and everything seems to work as soon as the car is moving. While it is at a complete stop, my van also occasionally jumps as if it’s trying to shift into gear and move itself. This all started on Thursday when the temperature suddenly dropped. Any ideas as to what might be wrong with it and how much it will cost to fix???

Is the check engine light on?

Strange symptoms but I would first perhaps suspect an issue with the vehicle speed sensor and or its circuitry.

That’s just a shot in the dark but no one had responded yet so at least your question gets a “bump”.

I’m geussing a bad sensor. Rather a nearly bad sensor. Chrysler has a set of sensors for the engine speed, the transmission speed and the axle speed. The sensors are about 60 each but you need a trusty mechanic to find the right one. My guess is the output sensor to the differential. Just did one on my 95 cirrus. The cost should be about 120. It is not to hard to get to but the sensor is about 60.

It sounds like you have an issue with the output speed sensor. These transmissions are known for their speed sensor issues. Scan the computer for codes, you will probably see and output speed sensor code along with one or more gear ratio codes. Post back with the code/s and we can go from there. Most likely you will be replacing both the input (Turbine) speed sensor and the output speed sensor. These can be purchased for less than $50 and are easily installed.

How do I scan for codes?

Take it to one of your local auto parts stores, most will read the codes for free. Have them check for current codes and history codes. Write down the code numbers and descriptions and post them back here and we can go from there. More than likely you will probably get an output speed sensor code along with one or more gear ratio codes. While you are there, price an input (Turbine) speed sensor, and an output speed sensor. This is a very common problem in these transmissions. I see it very often. Post back as soon as you can.

2001 chrysler voyager speedometer not working

Output speed sensor, PCM, cluster, PCI data bus are the players. I'd say since you have no shifting issues the OSS is out. The cluster tests ok so it's out. That leaves the PCM and the data bus. You have cluster codes but it appears nothing related. You and I know you don't change a PCM on a whim. I would thoroughly inspect pertinent connections and ring out the wiring before going there. Did you try a reset? (disconnect neg battery cable again for 5 minutes). ORC? Yup occupant restraint controller. I'm not seeing 100.7 anywhere 400.1? Probably had a power spike likely when disconnecting/reconnecting battery or maybe a ticklish ign switch or maybe.... 1684 cause... I've read of various problems after disconnecting batteries. Why your van...who knows.

Battery reset? That's right, it's one of your pet statements. Funny how when you get into the thick of it you forget the obvious. We all do. ORC? Yup. It controls the airbags. Not positive on the 03 but most are bolted to the floor at the bottom of the center console. If you're going to mess with it make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable and wait two minutes to keep the bags in the dash. Hey there's that battery cable again.

Thanks bb. Where did all this come from - I searched my SM CD but didn't find this? I forgot to check the printed manual. Anyway, the two minute disconnect did work, now the needle is normal. I forgot to check the codes again. Very curious, will do it tomorrow. Thanks to all for the assist.

All the same codes are still there. It will be interesting to see if any go away after more starts, this van is not driven much but P1684 (It sometimes shows as 168.4?) surely will go away.

New stuff; Yesterday I heard an intermittent sound coming from the center control panel like a Cicada plus a background sound like a tiny one-cyl engine. It continued on and off even with the engine off. Did it a second time later on and then disappeared. I now have these codes 100.1 ABS COMMUNICATION FAULT 100.3 EATX COMMUNICATION FAULT 100.4 FCM COMMUNICATION FAULT 100.5 ORC COMMUNICATION FAULT 100.7 ?? 400.1 IMPROPER POWER DOWN DETECTED The odometer also read 8029.4 once after the cluster test. It read 50.3 before the test? It went back to 000.0 after another cluster test Code P1684 is still there, which I expected. There are no operating symptoms whatsoever or anything unusual on the inst panel. Any idea what these mean overall? I'm sure they are trying to tell me something? Thanks!

Checked again today and the only ones left are E100.1 and P1684? I didn't do a thing except drive the van a dozen or so times since the last post? So, five codes just disappeared on their own - this system will never cease to amaze me. And, no more cicadas, that only happened once.
