How to Visit the Jack Daniels Distillery
While living in East Tennessee I never gave Jack Daniel’s much thought. Since Lynchburg is in middle Tennessee, it wasn’t really on my radar. I am also not a big fan of liquor, so I never felt the need to try this whiskey.
But during a few international trips, I realized that Jack Daniel’s was a kind of a big deal. While studying abroad in London, I saw advertisements for the Tennessee whiskey everywhere. Often, when I told a Londoner that I was from Tennessee they would exclaim, “Oh! Like Jack Daniel’s!” I’ve also seen signs for Jack Daniel’s in other parts of Europe and South America.
So, I finally decided to add the Jack Daniels Distillery to my Tennessee Bucket List. During a school holiday, I was able to make the trip to Lynchburg to visit Jack Daniels. Before my visit, I signed up for a tour on the Jack Daniel’s website . There are a few different tour options, but I chose the Flight of Jack Daniel’s Tour. This was an inexpensive tour ($17) and I felt that it would offer the best overview of the distillery and Jack’s story.
The tour options include:
Dry county tour ($14).
This is a whiskey-free tour that is suitable for all ages. This tour provides guests with the history and background of Jack Daniels without any whiskey samples. I am not exactly sure why they offer this tour but I guess some guests are interested in the idea of whiskey without actually wanting to sample it? This is an all-ages tour so I can see this being an appealing option for families who really want to tour the distillery but have to bring their kids along. I won’t judge anymore- it is just interesting to offer a dry tour at a distillery-that’s all.
Flight of Jack Daniel’s Tour ($17)
This is an 18+ tour that includes the history and stories provided in the Dry County Tour, with the added bonus of whiskey samples at the end. This was the tour I took and I can highly recommend it. It was a perfect balance of introducing me to to the Jack Daniel’s story without overwhelming me with liquor talk that I didn’t understand or wasn’t interested in. I also found it fascinating to sample whiskey with a professional who could explain the best way to sip and enjoy the different varieties.
The Angel’s Share ($22)
This tour seems like the advanced option of the Flight of Jack Daniel’s Tour. You will still receive a distillery tour but the whiskey tasting includes their Single Barrel Collection and limited edition whiskey. So this would have been lost on me, but if you are more of a connoisseur, this would be an interesting tour.
The Taste of Lynchburg ($75)
This 3-hour tour includes the Angel’s Share distillery tour and whiskey tasting, along with a tour of Lynchburg’s town square. Additionally, the tour includes lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House Restaurant. If you are looking for a longer tour and want a taste of some traditional Southern food this would be a great option.
Mr. Jack Toast in the Hollow Tour ($13)
During this is a quick 30-minute tour you will ride through the Old Town and distillery grounds in the comfort of a motorcoach. The tour does end with a taste of the famous whiskey, so this is a perfect tour for those who want the historical information and tasting experience without the walking required in the other tours.
Visit Jack Daniels
Getting there.
The drive to Lynchburg from my home in Knoxville was a little over 3 hours. The route went through Chattanooga, so we stopped here for a quick breakfast and trip to the popular pedestrian bridge before continuing our trip. As we continued our drive I became more and more surprised by the environment. I knew that there were many rural parts of Tennessee, but it was interesting to learn that one of the world’s most recognizable brands came from such a small town.
We arrived a little early for our tour, which gave me time to explore the museum in the main lobby. The small exhibit provided some great information that set the stage for the upcoming tour. Although some details have been lost in time, Jack Daniel was born around 1849 in Lynchburg, Tennessee. He never married or had kids, but eventually passed his whiskey company to his nephew. In 1884 Jack Daniel took over his mentor’s distillery and purchased the land and hollow where the distillery still stands today.
By 1880 Jack Daniel’s was one of 15 distilleries in the county. The whiskey gained national recognition when it won the gold medal for “finest whiskey” at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. However, around this time the temperance movement was gaining traction in Tennessee, so the company began distilling in St. Louis and Birmingham.
Unfortunately, this was an unsuccessful move due to quality concerns. The whiskey needed to be made from the hollow’s water in order to achieve its award-winning flavor. In 1938 production finally restarted at the Lynchburg distillery allowing for the signature Jack Daniel’s whiskey to once again be produced.
Distillery Tour
The tour lasted 1.5 hours and was a really interesting way to learn about the history and significance of this popular whiskey. Our tour group consisted of about 25 people, and I was surprised to learn that my husband and I were some of the only people on the tour from Tennessee. The other tour members included people from Chicago, California, Brazil, Poland, and Argentina. It is still so interesting to me how wide of a reach this Tennessee whiskey has!
The tour included an overview of the history, distilling process, and a look inside the bottling factory. I never realized how much goes into creating a bottle of Jack (I learned all about the charcoal mellowing and aging processes). The tour also includes a visit to Cave Spring Hollow, the natural limestone spring that provides water for every bottle of Jack.
The tour ended in the tasting room. The guide gave everyone 5 Jack Daniel’s samples. These included Gentlemen Jack, Old No 7, Single Barrel Select, Tennessee Honey, and Tennessee Fire. In case you were wondering, this was my first taste of Jack Daniel’s. No, I didn’t really enjoy the whiskey. But this was a fun way to sample it for the first time.
The tour guide gave us an overview of each style, how to best taste it, and what we should expect out of the flavor. The tour ended in a gift shop (of course). Here you can purchase many different varieties of Jack, as well as gifts and souvenirs. Be sure to stock up in this gift shop. This is the only place in the county where you can legally purchase alcohol. Yes, Lynchburg lies in a dry county. So you can’t purchase any variety of Jack Daniel’s outside the distillery’s gift shop.
If you plan to spend any additional time in Lynchburg, be aware that this is a small town, so there is not much to do besides the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. The downtown area had a few restaurants and shops, which mostly sell non-alcoholic Jack Daniel’s souvenirs.
Lynchburg could be an easy side trip for anyone traveling through Tennessee. The distillery is only 1.5 hours from Nashville, 4.5 hours from Memphis, and 3.5 from Knoxville.
Alright, I know this might not be on everyone’s bucket list. But the tour provided some interesting insight into the history of an extremely recognizable international brand.

Jack daniel’s unveils vr experience.
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey has launched The Verse , its first ever virtual reality (VR) experience, featuring a performance from hip hop fusion band Phony Ppl developed using artificial intelligence (AI).
The Verse follows on from Jack Honey’s Art, Beats + Lyrics , a touring art and music programme, launched in 2004. This new VR experience, developed by Cult Creative, can be accessed through mobiles, tablets, computers or VR headsets, allowing users to virtually explore a number of spaces.
Within the VR experience, users will be able to see more than 80 artworks from over 30 artists, including Atlanta-based Tanzanian-Nigerian visual artist Marryam Moma, and photographer Polo Silk.
It will also mark the VR debut of Brooklyn-based band Phony Ppl, utilising newly-developed AI-powered markerless motion capture technology to create an immersive experience. The band said of its involvement: “By fusing the worlds of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, music and technology, we are bringing an unparalleled platform for our fans to connect, celebrate and experience our first-ever virtual concert.”
Additionally, The Verse also contains a homage to the Bronx’s 1520 Sedgwick Ave (considered to be the birthplace of the hip hop genre 50 years ago), an elevator that takes participants from earth to outer space, and the Honey Lounge, where guests can virtually mingle and socialise.
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey brand director Keenan Harris said:”By honouring hip hop culture, The Verse serves as a reminder of the transformative power of art and music, instilling hope and inspiring positive change within the community and beyond. This virtual art gallery and music experience will showcase Jack Honey’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation while remaining true to our core values of upholding authenticity and passion. As a leader in the spirits industry, Jack Daniel’s continues to pave the way for experiences that transcend traditional boundaries, delighting our consumers with unique and memorable moments.”

Jack Daniels virtual reality tour of the distillery
Jack Daniels virtual reality tour spits hot fire
The video puts you front and center for a cruise over Lynchburg. I started looking around at the lovely hills and ended up holding “right” and pretending like I was spinning out of control. You then get to check out their water source (a bragging point for most distilleries), watch palates burn to make charcoal, and duck for cover as a cooper fires off sparks while working on barrels.
You end up at the top of the rickhouse with Master Distiller Jeff Arnett and some ghosts who appear to be having a pretty good time. All in all not a bad use of a few minutes.
There will be a full blown goggled version available at special events like Lollapalooza this summer for those of you who really want to feel like you’ve been teleported to the Volunteer State. The Jack Daniels virtual reality video definitely won’t replace a trip to the distillery, or any distillery for that matter, but it’s a pretty fun look for those who haven’t been there.
It’s also a very clever way of advertising, as evidenced by me being compelled to share it.

Jack Daniel’s Launches ‘Arts, Beats + Lyrics’ VR Experience Called ‘The Verse’
When you think of Jack Daniel’s whiskey… the first thing you don’t think about is hip hop. Yet, Brooklyn-based music group Phony Ppl and Jack Daniels want to change that perception by collaborating on an immersive virtual experience and concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop.
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey’s urban art and Hip Hop program Art, Beats + Lyrics , a touring art and music program launched in 2004 by Cult Creative, are taking AB&L to the next level with The Verse — the brand’s first immersive virtual reality experience. The Afrofuturism-inspired world showcases the works of over 30 celebrated Black and diverse artists and creators while exploring the intersection of Hip Hop and innovation.
Featured artists include legendary photographer and cultural archivist Polo Silk , Atlanta-based Tanzanian-Nigerian visual artist Marryam Moma , and contemporary realist painter Tim Okamura . Fans can now access The Verse through any connected device (mobile, tablet, desktop or VR headset) through www.SeeTheVerse.com .
“By honoring Hip Hop culture, The Verse serves as a reminder of the transformative power of art and music, instilling hope and inspiring positive change within the community and beyond. This virtual art gallery and music experience will showcase Jack Honey’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation while remaining true to our core values of upholding authenticity and passion,” said Keenan Harris, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey Brand Director, in a press release. “As a leader in the spirits industry, Jack Daniel’s continues to pave the way for experiences that transcend traditional boundaries, delighting our consumers with unique and memorable moments.”
Phony Ppl, who recently collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on their latest album Euphonyus , will be the first artists to make their virtual concert debut, featuring the first use of marker-less motion capture A.I. technology. The quintet will transport visitors to the surface of the moon and be reimagined as larger-than-life characters as they perform in The Verse’s Honey Club.
“We are thrilled to present this revolutionary experience to our audience,” said Phony Ppl, who will embark on their international tour this October. “By fusing the worlds of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, music and technology, we are bringing an unparalleled platform for our fans to connect, celebrate and experience our first-ever virtual concert!”

The ride to the distillery included trivia, funny stories, a dance contest (what??!) and chances to win a mini shot of moonshine to get the party started. When we arrived at the distillery we had a very entertaining and educational tour of the facilities. The guide was super knowledgeable and shared lots of great stories about the history of the area and the distilling process. Next was the cocktail class! SO fun and delicious. We sampled several spirits, then learned how to make four very unique and yummy cocktails - complete with samples. Then we had brunch. It was so hard to choose with such a cool menu. We tried the eggs benedict with cheese grits (YUM), and chicken waffle sliders with home fries (REALLY YUM!). I had a mule with my brunch and it was great! The ride home was lively enough to keep us awake after all those drinks and awesome food. Live sing along with very talented musicians and YES they take requests. Explore the origins, evolution of Jack Daniel's with a virtual tour
The iconic Jack Daniel's whiskey of Tennessee in the United States is popular around the world. Its fans include not only regular people but also several celebrities. In fact, a renowned pop musician the late Frank Sinatra was buried with a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey.
Even though people around the world are mostly confined to their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they can conduct a virtual tour to Lynchburg in Tennessee, where Jack Daniel's originated and learn how the magic drink in the square bottles is created, thanks to this video .
The video takes viewers 150 years back in time when a young Jack Daniel, at a mere 16 years of age, set up his own distillery in Lynchburg. The virtual tour provides glimpses of the amazing evolution of the distillery, which was the first distillery to be registered in the United States.
Even after over a century-and-a-half since the whiskey was created, the makers still stick to Jack's motto, 'Every day, we make the whiskey better.' The efforts involved in making this promise come true can be experienced in the 360-degree YouTube video.
The visuals show how much care and attention are given to select the ideal ingredients of the whiskey. Incidentally, the water to distill the alcoholic beverage is even now sourced from the same spring that the founder Jack Daniel identified for the purpose 150 years ago. In fact, the spring with pure water is considered divine by the makers of the whiskey and can be seen in the video.
Travel-deprived people of Taiwan finally board a 'flight'
Another interesting aspect of Jack Daniel's is that it is one of the few whiskeys in the world created in oak barrels made by the distillers themselves. By storing the whiskey in these oak barrels, the drink is considered to acquire its distinct taste and colour.
Jeff Arnott, the master distiller, also appears in the video to share more details of the manufacturing process.

THINGS TO SEE
There are a lot of interesting attractions to experience at the Jack Daniel's Distillery.
Here's a short list of the more interesting things to see while you’re here.
We’ll also include details about some fun things to do in Lynchburg!
Barrelhouse 1 – 14
If you choose either the Flight of Jack or Angel’s Share distillery tours, you’ll have the opportunity to see this historic barrelhouse.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by @outingsandaboutings
Although you won’t drink anything here, it is a great chance to see where some of the best whiskey in the world comes from.
One of the more strange aspects of the history behind this company is that Jack Daniel himself was killed by a large safe – and no, it didn’t fall on his head.
So how exactly did a safe kill the man who created such an incredible whiskey? Well, you’ll have to take the tour to find out!
Natural Spring
One of the reasons that Jack Daniel’s produces such high-quality whiskey is that they have a natural spring on the property which provides the water for their drinks.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shannon and Joe (@wolvesontherun_)
While on the tour, you’ll have an opportunity to see this spring for yourself!
Aging Warehouse
While you might not have an opportunity to visit this site, you will at least pass by the warehouse where all of Jack Daniel’s whiskey is aged.
As you walk past the structure, you won’t be able to ignore the strong smell of delicious whiskey wafting through the air.
Heated Charcoal
As your tour guide explains the process by which Jack Daniel’s whiskey is made, you will have an opportunity to see the heated charcoal they use.
This charcoal is mellowed to produce the best flavor for the whiskey.
Bottling Plant
In addition to all the other sites included on this tour, you will also have the chance to see how Jack Daniel’s whiskey is bottled at the end of its journey.
If you feel like grabbing a bottle for yourself, you can purchase one in the gift shop!
Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House
This is probably the most well-known restaurant in the area, and you can enjoy a meal here during the Taste of Lynchburg tour.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by L.A. Walker (@anglophile7)
There is also a day trip which includes lunch at this location.
Miss Mary Bobo’s restaurant has some of the best food in Tennessee, and the service you’ll receive here is quite possibly the definition of Southern hospitality.

The virtual reality film was produced digitall y to allow the consumers to experience the brand’s mantra: “Every day we make it, we’ll make it the best we can”. It was directed by The Mill’s Bowe King and Rama Allen.

They allow us to honor the important events in our lives and to ensure the lessons of the past are not forgotten. This new technology is a way for us to celebrate the Jack Daniel Distillery with fans everywhere and bring them closer to Lynchburg. The 360 degree video experience will allow Jack Daniel’s consumers a chance to ‘visit’ the rick yard, see the cave spring hollow and feel as though they are right there in Lynchburg where each batch of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is crafted, and has been for 150 years.”
