Drink and Learn

The all-important guide to north texas brewery tours.

Rahr and Sons Brewing

If you're a craft beer aficionado, then you're in luck, because North Texas has a plethora of great breweries at which you can wet your whistle. A small admission fee (usually $15 or less) gets you a tour of the brewery, a pint glass for your collection, and a few pints of beer. What a steal.

Here's a list of breweries around North Texas that offer weekly tours:

Bitter Sisters Brewery Addison's resident brewery has tours every Saturday from 12-2 pm for $15, which gets you the standard tour, three beers, and a pint glass. Bitter Sisters excels at making clean, crisp beers, like the Hissy Fit Marzen Lager and the Busy Body Blonde Lager. The brewery also recently debuted a taproom, open on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Community Beer Co. Practically next door to Peticolas Brewing Company (see below) in the Dallas Design District, Community features a gigantic taproom that often hosts local venders and a musician. Tours occur every Saturday from 12-5 pm. You get three beers with your admission of $10 if tickets are purchased online (by the Friday evening before), or you can pay $15 at the door. The brewery also has the taproom open weekly Wednesday through Saturday, where beer can be purchased by the glass.

Deep Ellum Brewing Co. Dallas' Deep Ellum Brewery tour is a great place to begin a Saturday in Deep Ellum. The brewery includes a taproom and large patio, where you're sure to find live music every week during tour hours, which are 12-3 pm. Afterward, head over to Elm or Main streets to enjoy the large selection of restaurants and bars Deep Ellum has to offer. The tour costs $15 at the door or $12 online, and you receive three beers and a pint glass. The brewery also has weekly taproom hours, where you can hang out and buy beer by the glass.

Division Brewing Arlington's first locally owned and operated brewery, Division Brewing has a taproom open to the public on Friday evening, from 4 pm to midnight, but it has recently opened on Saturdays for tours. Its $15 fee comes with four beers and the standard souvenir glass that we've come to expect. The brewery's Facebook page is the best source of information on tours and tastings, as they're still getting up and running on a regular schedule. With 10 to 15 beers on tap to taste, this is a must-see new brewery.

Four Bullets Brewery Located in Richardson, Four Bullets currently only has hours on Saturday, from 12-6 pm. The tour costs $10 and gets you three beers and a pint glass. After the tour, grab a pint of the Royal Flush Red Ale and head out to the expansive patio to hang out. Once you've had your fill at the brewery, head over to the Richardson Food Park across the street, which features a decent local draft beer assortment and an always rotating selection of food trucks.

Franconia Brewing Company One of the first breweries to open its doors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Franconia has one tour a week, at 11 am on Saturdays. The always entertaining guide for the tour is typically the owner himself, Dennis Werhman, who comes from a family of brewers back in his home country of Germany. He is not afraid to tell you his opinions of the huge domestic brewers and how Franconia sets itself apart by using the methods of the German Purity Law. The tour is only $5, and you receive several beers during the event. For an extra $5, you can get a Franconia glass to take home.

Martin House Brewing Company Situated just across the Trinity River from downtown Fort Worth, Martin House's skyline view pairs extremely well with its excellent beer. Martin House is open for tours on Thursdays, 6-8 pm, and Saturdays, 2-5 pm, for $10 (yes, you get a pint glass to keep). Expect large crowds of locals, who flock here regularly to listen to the live music, play games, and visit with the friendly team who brew some of Cowtown's most popular craft beers.

Nine Band Brewing Company Allen's only brewery has tours for $15 every Saturday at 12 pm, 1 pm, and 2 pm. The cost of admission comes with the requisite pint glass and beer samples. Nine Band has a wide selection, from its 28th State Stout to the Badge Honey Blonde. The brewery's taproom is also open Monday through Saturday evenings, where you can buy beer by the glass.

Panther Island Brewing Company Head over to North Main Street in Fort Worth for Panther Island Brewing's tour on Fridays, 5-9 pm, and Sundays, 2-6 pm. The $10 tour gets you a free pint glass, three samples of beer, live music, and access to local food trucks.

Peticolas Brewing Company A staple in the Dallas Design District and craft beer community, Peticolas hosts tours on the first and third Saturday of every month for $10 at the door. The cost of admission gets you a tour, three beers from its award-winning selection (like Velvet Hammer Imperial Red Ale or Royal Scandal English Pale Ale), and a pint glass. Before and after the tour, there is plenty of space to relax, drink your beers, and play bar games like rebound shuffle board. Dallasites have been flocking here to hang out on Saturdays since its opening.

Rabbit Hole Brewing Hop on over to Rabbit Hole Brewing just north of Fort Worth, in Justin, Texas. These guys host two tours on Saturdays, between 12-4 pm. You're likely to find core beers on tap — Mike Modano's 561 Kolcsh, Rapture Fusion Brown Ale, and 10/6 English Pale Ale — along with seasonal offerings on a constant rotation.

Rahr & Sons Brewing Company Rahr has been a staple in the Fort Worth community and craft beer scene for years, and it was one of the first in Dallas-Fort Worth to open its doors to the public. It has $10 tours on Wednesday evenings, from 5-7:30 pm, and on Saturday afternoons, from 1-3 pm. Of course, free beer samples are included with your admission. We recommend hitting the Wednesday evening tour to avoid the large weekend crowds and for a chance to sample any specialty beers that may be on tap.

Revolver Brewing Revolver took Dallas-Fort Worth by storm with Blood & Honey, its flagship beer on tap in most restaurants these days. The brewery is worth the drive out to Granbury, with one of the best brewery atmospheres around. Revolver opens from 12-3 pm on Saturdays for tours, and four 8-ounce tastings are included with admission. Come ready to hang out at this family-friendly brewery, where you can listen to live music and try your hand at giant Jenga or cornhole.

North richland hills joins dfw roster with walmart drone delivery service, all the fort worth restaurants serving mother’s day brunch in 2024, tastemaker awards, 10 best chefs in fort worth earn nods in culturemap's tastemaker awards.

Over the past few weeks, we've dedicated a special editorial series to the 2024 CultureMap Fort Worth Tastemaker Awards , our annual event celebrating the best in Fort Worth food and drink. We'v profiled nominees in categories such as pastry chef , bars , and best restaurants .

Now we have arrived at our final category: Chef of the Year.

Long hours, physically and mentally taxing, and often with little praise or recognition, being a chef is not for the weary. No matter the menu type or the size of the restaurant, the challenges are many - but all 10 of these Fort Worth chefs make things look easy and provide us some of the most delicious cuisine in Fort Worth.

Who’ll be crowned the best of the best? Find out at the our reveal party and signature tasting event, happening Thursday, May 2 at the 4 Eleven (411 S. Main St.). Hurry and get tickets before they officially sell out.

Here, in alphabetical order, are the 10 nominees for Chef of the Year:

Landon Cabarubio, Pizza Verde Running a vegan restaurant in a city nicknamed Cowtown is a challenge, but Landon Cabarubio is up for it – and thriving while he’s at it. His two-year-old vegan pizza joint, Pizza Verde, draws carnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike simply because the food is that good. Cararubio makes his own almond-based mozzarella and thin crust dough and uses high-quality, flavorful, plant-based ingredients. Cauliflower crusts are also available – a popular choice not only for vegans but those on a Whole30 or low-carb meal plan. Cararubio started the concept with his wife Jennifer by first hosting pop-ups around town. Fort Worth diners proved they were ready for a permanent Pizza Verde, and Cararubio delivered.

Rodrigo Cárdenas, Don Artemio Born into a culinary family – his mother a pastry chef and his dad touted as the “king of cabrito” in Saltillo, Mexico – Cardenas was destined for a career in gastronomy. As the executive chef of the nationally lauded Don Artemio, Cardenas has taken the reins as the face of the kitchen in recent months. He catapulted into the national spotlight after Don Artemio was nominated as one of the top 10 best new restaurants in the country by the James Beard Foundation last year, and he was a big player in this year’s Fort Worth Food + Wine Festival, appearing at multiple events. Recognition runs in the family; his father was named Chef of the Year at the 2023 CultureMap Fort Worth Tastemaker Awards.

Graham Elliot, Le Margot , F1 Smokehouse TV celeb chef and two-time Michelin star recipient Graham Elliot relocated to Fort Worth to fulfill a desire to get back into the day-to-day bustle, joining chef and restaurateur Felipe Armenta and his Far Out Hospitality Group in 2022. They've since launched a slew of new restaurants at breakneck speed: Cowboy Prime, a high-end steakhouse in Midland (with plans for a Fort Worth Stockyards location; Le Margot, the splashy French fine dining destination that harkens Moulin Rouge in design and atmosphere; and F1 Smokehouse, an upscale spinoff of Armenta’s barbecue food truck that they opened in September 2023. Elliot has his hand in all of it, from creating the menus, designing websites, and his favorite, being in the kitchen.

Mark Hitri, Paris 7th Longtime Fort Worthians will remember Mark Hitri as part of the opening team behind Sapristi, the beloved Forest Park Boulevard bistro and wine bar. Others will recall he once led the kitchen at Bernard Tronche’s Saint-Emilion. Still others may know him from his years as a chef instructor at The Culinary School of Fort Worth; he was an integral part of taking the school to a more professional level, attracting career-driven students. In 2022, his desire to return to the restaurant kitchen led to his current role as executive chef and partner at Paris 7th, where he’s earned a loyal following of customers seeking an elevated, intimate dining experience they can always count on being consistent – and delicious.

Gigi Howell, Margie's Italian Gardens , JD’s Hamburgers , Pulido’s Kitchen & Cantina With a contagious smile and can-do attitude, Gigi Howell exudes Fort Worth hospitality – just ask anyone who’s ever met her. The busy Cowtown native wears a lot of chef hats – one for J.D.’s Hamburgers, which she opened in the Westland area in far West Fort Worth in 2022; one for Margie’s Italian Gardens, located next to JD’s and reopening by summer under her leadership; West Side Café, another longtime eatery she helped take over last year; and soon, a reincarnated Pulido’s Kitchen & Cantina. Howell has a long history in Fort Worth restaurants with tenure at Reata, Park Hill Café, and Celebration. She’s now known for her knack for breathing new life into time-honored concepts.

Grant Morgan, 97 West Kitchen & Bar Specializing in Texas cuisine with a focus on local purveyors, Morgan has cooked for celebs from Cameron Diaz and Clint Eastwood. Prior to joining the high-profile Hotel Drover in the Fort Worth Stockyards when it opened in 2021, Morgan gained experience at some of hospitality’s biggest destinations, including Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa, Le Cirque at Bellagio Las Vegas, Dragonfly at Hotel ZaZa in Dallas, and The Ranch at Las Colinas. He was nominated to cook as a guest chef at the renowned James Beard House in New York City, and today oversees the entire culinary program for Hotel Drover’s restaurants, bars, and banquet events.

Preston Paine, Emilia's , The Blue Room Paine has experience in fine dining establishments like Eleven Madison Park in New York City and most recently worked for Exxir Hospitality in Bishop Arts, but it’s at The Crescent Hotel where he gets to really show off. Paine oversees two hotel restaurants: Emilia’s – one of 16 nominees for Best New Restaurant of the Year – and The Blue Room, an opulent fine dining experience featuring New American dishes with next-level presentation not found anywhere else in Fort Worth. Paine’s restaurant philosophy: refined food, detailed service, and encouraging guests to linger over a meal with loved ones.

Marcus Paslay, Walloon's , Provender Hall , Piatello Italian Kitchen , Clay Pigeon Food & Drink Since opening Clay Pigeon Food & Drink 10 years ago, Marcus Paslay – who’s cooked everywhere from Alaska to Hawaii – has cranked out restaurants with the same quiet poise and quality, the latest being Walloon’s. The West Magnolia Avenue destination is his ode to seafood and the eclectic vibe of the Near Southside. Think oysters Rockefeller, redfish beignets, and Louisiana barbecue shrimp. Paslay maintains loyal followings at his more tenured concepts, including Piatello Italian Kitchen and Provender Hall, and recently took ownership of time-honored Tex-Mex favorite, Mercado Juarez.

John Piccolino, B&B Butchers & Restaurant A Pittsburgh native with a spunky, amiable personality, B&B Butchers executive chef John Piccolino has more than 40 years of experience in the cutthroat high-end restaurant industry. His resume includes opening the Atlantis Hotel & Casino, the New York Hilton, and overseeing the kitchen at Chicago’s Palmer House Hilton. Before he joined the team at B&B, Piccolino spent lots of time in Vegas as the executive chef of Smith & Wollensky and McCormick and Schmick’s. Upscale steakhouses are his vibe, and he’s made Fort Worth his home for feeding his passion.

Patrick Ru, Teddy Wong’s Master dumpling chef Patrick Ru, who has a following from New York to Hong Kong, has turned a tiny shell of a West Rosedale Street restaurant and convenience store into an upscale dining destination and one of the most sought-after reservations in town. Teddy Wong’s has been red hot since opening last fall, drawing hard-to-tap diners from West Fort Worth for handmade dumplings not previously found in such variety, quantity, and quality in Fort Worth. The addition of an extensive wine, beer, and sake list add to the charm, along with neatly set tables with black tablecloths. Teddy Wong’s is a spinoff of Ru’s Bushi Bushi Dim Sum in Addison, which drew diners from Fort Worth and led Ru to partner with Fort Worth restaurateur Jeffrey Yarbrough on the successful project.

Distillery Trail - A Tour for Spirits Lovers If you love the idea of drinking a local libation in a hometown distillery, this is your tour!

About the event, what to expect...

There are as many distilleries in Texas as there were in the country when the American craft whiskey scene started gaining traction after the Great Recession of 2008, and Dallas-Fort Worth is at the center of the revolution.

As we waited for our whiskey to age, we created vodkas and gins that showcased Texas grains and botanicals. Next, we went on to corn whiskeys and moonshine, which became more and more popular nationwide. As local distilleries started producing single malt whiskeys made from malted barley grown in the state, a small distillery in Denison won the first-ever World's Best Bourbon award at the beginning of 2020, the first time a distillery outside Kentucky achieved such recognition. This event changed the game and threw the North Texas craft industry into the national spotlight.

So what is this tour about? It's a discovery journey to sip, sample, and buy North Texas's best homegrown spirits while learning some of the secrets of the craft of distilling magic.

- We will visit three distilleries and have a tasting at each of them.

- A fun and friendly distillery tour, we will meet a master distiller at one of the facilities we visit,

to provide expert information about fermentation, infusion, bottling, and distilling.

- Food - Distilleries generally do not have a kitchen; depending on your tour route, we will have food delivered or stop at a local place for lunch or dinner.

- Round trip transportation - the number of guests will determine the size of the vehicle. Let us know if you would like a party bus (at least 12 guests), and we can arrange that.

- Promotional pricing at some of the distilleries we visit if you decide to bring home some of the goodies.

The tour is four to five hours long, depending on your location (commuting takes time...). Whether you prefer vodka or small-batch bourbon, local honey-laced whiskey, or grapefruit- and pecan-infused gin, you've got your pick.

  • Tasting at each of the establishments we visit.

2019 Spring Brewery Tour: Fort Worth

FortWorthTour

The date and itinerary are yet to be settled, but in the spring - somewhere between all the thunderstorms and tornados - we visit Fort Worth, visit 3 breweries and have a great time riding miles and drinking brews.

Like in the past, the tour will start on a Saturday afternoon. We will meet and end at the T&P station for easy rail access from both Dallas (TRE) and now Grapevine (TEXRail).

More information will be published on our Facebook site (and hopefully here) as soon as we get the details sorted out.

See you soon,

#DrinkBeerRideBikes

Legal and your responsibility.

  • Know your limit.
  • The Texas penal code addressing D.W.I. is § 49.04 and it specifically says "motor vehicle". Remember if you ride while intoxicated on the streets acting like a car you can get a DWI in the state of Texas. Most likely you will get PI instead.
  • You are an adult - Drink Responsible .
  • Have a bailout plan, some one that can come pick you up.
  • If you ride Drunk on a Bike you may not kill someone but you may kill yourself.
  • Wear a helmet. (see above)

Brewery Tour Tips

Nutrition: very important.

The increased activity and nutrition needs are completely different from sitting in a pub. Everything speeds up. Texas heat only adds to it.

  • Drink more water than beer. Alcohol causes you to dehydrate so if you are drinking beer you are not even coming close to being hydrated properly. Drink twice the water as you would beer.
  • Eat a large breakfast before you go on your ride.
  • Eat high-carb foods while on your ride. Like bread (poor boys) or potatoes (French fries). It will not sober you up but it will slow the absorption of alcohol into your system. Cliff bars do not work well and caffeine just makes you a wide awake drunk.
  • When you have stopped drinking you have about 30 to 45 minutes before all of the alcohol is in your system fully. That is when the trouble starts and you become impaired beyond control. So get to a safe place quickly after the tour stops. Do not leave your bicycle at any of the breweries.

Basic Tour Rules

1. This is a family friendly event, we want everyone to have a great time, so please ride and drink responsibly. 2. Do not drink alcoholic beverages on the roads or trails. 3. Please do not bring your own beer - especially onto a brewery’s property. 4. Breweries do not serve to anyone under 21. Riders of any age are welcome to join us, but do not try to get beer if you are not of age - it will end poorly. 5. Bring cash if you can. Cash speeds up the lines and service. Most beers are $5. T-shirts are $20. 6. Don’t forget to tip your server, many of them only get $2.15 per hour to take care of your beverage needs.

When North Texas brewery closes April 27, Fort Worth will be ‘a lot less funky’

Funky picnic tried to save itself several times. it’s time to call it quits, the co-founder said..

By Sarah Blaskovich

9:21 AM on Apr 24, 2024 CDT

Fort Worth brewery Funky Picnic spent the past six months “continuing the fight” to try to stay open, co-founder Samantha Glenn told The Dallas Morning News . But after lower-than-expected sales in March, which is, historically, Funky Picnic’s best month, the brewery will close permanently after service on April 27, 2024.

The restaurant’s nearly 5-year run, from June 2019 to April 2024, took place mostly during the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Glenn said, tearfully, that Funky Picnic reached its limit after years of deferred rent and loan payments, up and down sales, inflation, and years of trying to innovate with food, beer and liquor to attract more customers.

Funky Picnic Brewery and Cafe is in Fort Worth's Near Southside neighborhood, near the...

“During COVID, people really did change their habits,” she said. “You used to go out three times a week, now you go out one time a week. … If you’re only going out a third of the time, you’re going to lose two restaurants that now don’t have the business to stay open.”

It’s a familiar story in North Texas .

She looks back on Funky Picnic’s fleeting beginnings. “It’s a completely different landscape than when we opened in 2019,” she said.

Glenn and co-founder Collin Zreet announced the closure on April 8, 2024, to give customers time to re-visit the brewery and to give staffers time to find new jobs.

“I’ve had so many grown men cry at me,” Glenn said, allowing herself a laugh. Regulars have told stories about first dates, rehearsal dinners and weddings at Funky Picnic. Some visited weekly, for trivia or drag brunch.

“I know we did everything we could to keep the doors open. We pushed our personal debts and finances as far as we could,” Glenn said.

“We were able to give five years. And that’s a long time.”

Funky from the start

Funky Picnic’s co-founders started as homebrewers, entering competitions like Brew Riot in Oak Cliff and Labor of Love in and near Deep Ellum. Funky Picnic’s motto, then and now, is “craft beer for every taste,” Glenn said.

After Funky Picnic opened, it became known for its peanut butter stout, ESB and German-style pilsner. The Mexican lager is another fan favorite, brewed initially to replace the Modelo enjoyed by kitchen staffers.

Glenn and Zreet didn’t have experience running a bar or a kitchen, so they hired a chef and a brewer to run the business in Near Southside, a blossoming neighborhood in Fort Worth in 2019. A few years in, the co-founders added a full bar to accommodate those who didn’t want to drink beer. It was a choice that seemed to make sense: Craft beer saw a boom in Dallas-Fort Worth in the 2010s, but sales slowed .

The cleverly-named TABC — a play on the acronym for Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission — is...

Funky Picnic was designed to be family-friendly, where kids could bring games to the tables and the menus were designed by a local artist and meant to be colored on. Glenn made sure there were changing tables in both the mens’ and womens’ bathrooms.

According to Glenn, customers loved the TABC, a turkey, avocado, bacon and cheddar sandwich, and the Cluck Norris, a fried chicken sandwich with avocado and bacon. The brewery’s “picnic food,” as Glenn put it, eventually evolved to include more dinner fare like burgers, wings and pizzas.

The kitchen is bringing back the Jailhouse Burger in the brewery’s final days. Inspired by Elvis Presley, who loved eating a peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich, the Jailhouse Burger is a beef patty topped with bacon, peanut butter, bananas, honey and mozzarella. It’s both good and weird, Glenn said, just like the brewery. She likes to pair it with their housemade peanut butter stout.

Tricky business

The bar’s one-year anniversary, in June 2020, coincided with the mandated closure of bars across Texas for coronavirus safety. Funky Picnic didn’t shut down because it was a restaurant and was allowed to remain open. But the anniversary was anticlimactic.

Parts of 2021 and 2022 saw better sales, Glenn said. They needed more room and took over the former Black Cat Pizza, which shared an address with the brewery, in 2022.

“We knew it was risky,” Glenn said. But it also allowed for private events.

Then consumer spending slowed because of inflation.

Funky Picnic Brewery and Cafe in Fort Worth brewed its own beer, but it also eventually had...

“In October 2023, we really saw people start to tighten up,” she said. “We had a $20,000 drop in sales from September to October. We knew November was going to be difficult, and we weren’t sure at that point if we could even get to the December [2023] events.”

They turned to Instagram, asking for help . Sales doubled for 10 days, Glenn said.

But then January and February 2024 were slow. And March 2024 — “usually our best month,” Glenn said — was 20% lower than expected.

With three years left on their lease, they picked April 27, 2024 as the closing date. “ Fort Worth is about to be a lot less funky ,” they posted online.

Funky Picnic’s staff will sell items online and in person in an effort to recoup some of the losses. Glenn she said she’s grateful to the many staff members who worked until the end. She doesn’t expect to relocate or reopen Funky Picnic.

“We’ll be dealing with the debts of Funky Picnic for a while,” Glenn said.

Funky Picnic is at 401 Bryan Ave., Fort Worth. It will stay open for lunch, dinner and drinks until the end of the day April 27, 2024.

An auction is live online now to sell furniture and other large items. The yard sale is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 28, 29 and 30, 2024. They will sell “everything,” co-founder Samantha Glenn said: glassware, plates, tables and more.
