CRUISES FOR SINGLES & SOLO CRUISING

Best for solo travellers - cruise critic's 2023 editors' picks awards.

The best experiences last a lifetime - solo travel is one of them. The ability to explore, take chances, meet new people and do what you want when you want. To trade stories, and cocktails, with like-minded travellers from around the world. Or to sail with a group, on your own terms. Now when you cruise solo with Norwegian, you'll enjoy more freedom and choice than ever. We've doubled the number of Solo Staterooms across our fleet by adding Solo Balcony and Oceanview rooms, in addition to Inside rooms and Studios. The best part? The savings! Traditional double occupancy rates do not apply. So come aboard with friends or family - or take time to meet new people, then watch the sunset from your private balcony. After all, you're pretty good company.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

From expeditions to around-the-world voyages, these sailings are perfect for solo travelers.

cruise holidays for single travellers

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

cruise holidays for single travellers

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee (river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

Cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

Expedition cruise line Atlas Ocean does not charge a single supplement fee for certain staterooms on its luxury yachts, making it a great fit for solo travelers. The cruise line is known for its culturally immersive sailings, which include tours with local guides, artisanal workshops, and even drone photography classes. Consider the Folklore & Waterfalls cruise from Reykjavik to Dublin for a chance to capture jaw-dropping landscapes while meeting like-minded travelers.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess , Holland America , and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park.

A seven-day Mediterranean with Greek Isles and Turkey cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sun Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to see another part of the world best explored by ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 133-day Grand Voyage Pole to Pole from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, covering Antarctica, South America, Europe, and Canada. Overnight stops include Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Reykjavik, Iceland, among others.

Those looking to explore both the Eastern and Western Hemisphere might enjoy Cunard's 98-night New York to Southhampton cruise. The World Voyage aboard the Queen Anne includes stops in the Caribbean and Central America before crossing the International Date Line to Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia. The ship visits various countries in Asia, such as Vietnam and Malaysia, before heading to South Africa, Spain, and England. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers at double occupancy, 3,385 at maximum occupancy and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes a maximum of 2,762 passengers and 1,150 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, Scarlet Lady boasts unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to over 2,160 square feet for RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

Scarlet Lady is homeported in Miami; it sails throughout the Caribbean and Europe.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

The Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

Solo cruising has never been this good. Not only are more cruise lines adding solo cabins, but the single-traveler cabins aboard ships are also getting more spacious and luxurious.

And just because a cruise line doesn’t offer a solo cabin doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to pay more to cruise alone, either. Some cruise lines waive or reduce single supplements that can double a solo traveler’s bill. These deals become especially frequent during the first quarter of the year,  a discount period known as “ wave season .”

River cruise lines are being especially savvy in courting solo travelers by “offering more attractive opportunities for those who like to travel in style by themselves,” says Joshua Harrell, chief marketing officer for the WorldVia Travel Group and the Travel Quest Network.

Whichever cruise line you choose, you’ll want to book early: The travel insurance search engine Squaremouth says its sales show a 64 percent increase in solo cruise travel this year from 2019.

Here's everything you need to know about single bookings aboard some of the best lines for solo cruisers.

All cruises featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian debuted a studio cabin in 2010 and was the first major cruise line to create accommodations for one. These cabins come in at just under 100 square feet—enough space for a full bed. They don’t offer sea views, but the cruise line does include access to a lounge where they can meet other solo travelers over snacks.

Norwegian's solo cabins are now on several ships, including the Norwegian Epi c, Norwegian Breakaway , Pride of America , and Norwegian Prima , which is set to debut this summer.

Holland America

Holland America's solo cabins are larger than Norwegian's, but you'll have to settle for a twin bed. Still, solo cruisers on Holland America’s Koningsdam , Niewuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Ryndam ships can expect between 127 and 172 square feet of space onboard.

Best of all, each of Holland America’s solo suites comes with an ocean view.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas. Pool Deck

The pool deck on board Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas ship

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has more single cruise cabins than the average cruise line. Half of the ships in its fleet offer solo cabins, but if you’re looking for a private balcony, you’ll want to book the Anthem of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Spectrum of the Seas or the line's newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas .

In addition to a private balcony that's perfect for sipping morning coffee, each of the single suites on these ships are nearly 200 square feet.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania is taking solo cruising to a whole new level with its newest solo suites. Its latest ship, Vista , debuting in 2023, includes six 270-square-foot solo cabins, each with a balcony and amenities including free laundry, room service, premium lounge access, and a bottle of Champagne. Each cabin features a memory foam bed, a separate seating area, and a private balcony.

The line is planning to add solo cabins to several additional ships this year, giving travelers even more options to sail solo.

Celebrity Cruises

If you're a solo cruiser who's in it for the view and not the private balcony, check out Celebrity Cruises' Infinite Veranda solo cabins. These cabins feature giant windows that create a space similar to a sunroom.

Infinite Veranda cabins are available on Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , and the new Celebrity Beyond . Each ship has a range of single cabins: Celebrity Edge has 16 of them, while Celebrity Beyond has double that, with 32 solo rooms.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages doesn’t just give solo travelers their own suite—it also gives them butler service.

Atlas' first solo suites hit the seas this year onboard its debut ship, World Navigator . Each suite clocks in at just over 180 square feet and comes equipped with a queen-size bed, a 42-inch TV, and a shower complete with L'Occitane bath products. There's even a separate closet just for your shoes.

Cunard Line

If you're looking to make a transatlantic voyage, Cunard offers solo cabins on the Queen Mary 2 , the iconic ship known for its transatlantic crossings between London and New York. Although they only offer a twin-size bed, solo suites onboard the Queen Mary 2 are around 180 square feet and include ocean views. Two other Cunard ships, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria , also offer single cabins, but some are interior rooms without ocean views.

This luxury cruise line doesn’t offer solo suites, but it also doesn’t charge solo cruisers double the price to book a cabin of their own.

10 Trips in the United States Everyone Should Add to Their Bucket List

Silversea, an all-inclusive cruise line known for its small, opulent ships and its discerning butler service, caps its single supplement at 25 percent of the cruise fare on select voyages. Of course, you’ll want to book early: Silversea’s solo cruise rates go up as departure dates get closer.

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways' AmaCello features solo cabins

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways has four ships with solo cabins: AmaDolce , AmaDante , AmaLyra , and AmaCello , which all sail European itineraries. On other ships, single supplements are 25 percent of the cruise fare for itineraries in Europe and Asia.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways waives single supplements on its European river cruises and on some itineraries in southeast Asia. About 10 percent of Avalon passengers are solo cruisers, but you’ll want to book early to join them. Only a portion of each ship’s staterooms are reserved for solo cruisers on each itinerary.

Single Travelers Guide to Planning a Solo Cruise.

There’s never been a better time to try something new. and doing so on your own terms..

A solo cruise isn't just a vacation; it's a chance for self-discovery and the creation of unforgettable memories on the open seas.

The idea of going on a cruise alone can be daunting — but solo travel is the way of the future. Luckily, US News & World Report named Virgin Voyages “among the best cruises for solo travelers ” in 2022.

Solo Travel is on the Rise

Solo cruises are the new norm in 2024, as people are increasingly willing to take on adventure themselves if their friends or family can’t be convinced to join. “There is a really wonderful circular relationship between self-esteem and traveling ,” licensed psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael Peet told NBC News. “Traveling in itself is an act of confidence. The fact that you went somewhere by yourself demonstrates strength.”

We’re inclined to agree — although between the bounty of onboard entertainment shows and events we curate and our carefully compiled list of Shore Things for when you dock, you won’t need to demonstrate too much strength on a voyage.

A study by MMGY found that one in four travelers plans to travel solo in the next six months. Will you be among them? Whether it’s with a classic, relaxing 4-night jaunt through the Caribbean or a sprawling 15-night getaway across the Mediterranean, you deserve some “you” time. See you on board for a solo cruise, Sailor!

Consider what to wear on your cruise , although we don’t have a dress policy onboard our cruise ships, nor do we force you into a formal night, you still want to consider our cruise activities and dressing for shore excursions.

A Solo Cruise for Singles, and everyone in between

People of any relationship status can find fun aboard one of our voyages, and our exclusively adult philosophy creates an alluring onboard atmosphere that draws like-minded people to one another.

Our Crew has put a lot of thought into inclusive activities and spaces on board the ship, from a “grog walk” (Virginese for “pub crawl”) through our many bars to the shared table concept at Gunbae, our convivial, first-to-sea Korean BBQ restaurant — where diners mingle while seated around a table, all sharing the same grill.

“I came expecting to relax, eat some great food and have fun. What I didn’t expect was to meet such an amazing group of humans while traveling alone,” posted Braunwyn Windham-Burke of The Real Housewives of Orange County about her experience cruising single on Scarlet Lady. “I’m coming back different than I left, healing through joy, stronger and more aware of myself.”

Booking a Single Cabin for Solo Travelers

Our adult only cruise ships aren’t just retreats for the rich and reality TV-famous, though. The Insider and Sea View cabins are priced attractively for people traveling alone — and subscribers to the Virgin Voyages email list are often notified of promotions on double occupancy rooms with no single supplement, meaning you can spread out without the customary extra charge.

Tips for your single cruise

An advantage of single cruises is that you can spend the holidays on board and in good company. Imagine spending your Easter cruise , Christmas cruise or New Year's Eve cruise on a ship with new acquaintances!

Popular travel destinations for single cruises

As a solo traveller you are completely free of the wishes and demands of fellow travellers so you can decide independently what your cruise should look like.

For example, experience an exotic cruise for solo travellers in Asia. Or take a relaxed break with wonderful destinations, such as a Caribbean cruise holiday.

If you want to combine sightseeing and nature, our Canary Islands cruises are for you. If you would like to book a single cruise closer to home, we recommend our Mediterranean cruises .

Entertainment for singles

Cruise ships have an extensive range of activities and entertainment. Usually at the beginning of a voyage a single traveller meeting takes place, so everyone can have the opportunity to meet and mingle.

In terms of activities on board, games such as darts, mini golf, crafts, volleyball, football or basketball are on offer for all. Dance classes are always popular and a great way to meet fellow travellers.

Since there is a free choice of tables and seats on many cruise ships in the buffet restaurants, it is a great opportunity to meet and chat to other single travellers.

Evening events also allow guests to get to know each other.  The theatre or late art auction are the perfect way to find travellers who have similar interests to yourself. You may meet at one of the many bars or the disco for a more relaxed atmosphere.

Cruises are a well-trodden holiday option, offering the opportunity to explore various parts of the world while enjoying the comfort of a hotel on the seas.

These trips are popular with both families and couples, but they can be just as rewarding and enjoyable for solo travellers, giving you as much flexibility as you want along with opportunities to meet like-minded holidaymakers and see some of the world’s finest tourist destinations .

Daily activities will keep you entertained while onboard, while organised excursions or solo trips let you see a magnificent range of towns and cities at your leisure. Solo-specific events mean that meeting other travellers is as easy as sitting down to dinner, while you’ll have a comfortable solo cabin to come back to at the end of each day. Choose the right cruise and you’ll get all of this while avoiding the common ‘singles surcharge’.

If you’ve got the itch to book, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best cruise liners for single passengers below.

Riviera Travel

Riviera Travel’s solo packages cover Europe’s main rivers

Riviera Travel operates river cruises around the world, with destinations as far as Egypt and Vietnam . Nevertheless, the focus is on European river cruises , with plenty of packages to the Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Douro and Danube on offer. Packages include return flights, airport transfers and all meals onboard, with an extensive range of excursions and activities including guided tours and on-board folk music shows.

European river cruises are the only option that Riviera offers for solo travellers, with seven routes that cover the continent’s main rivers. Prices include all the same features as a standard booking – such as excursions, onboard meals and Wi-Fi – but with spacious single occupancy cabins and welcome dinners to help you meet people. Solo bookings also include the ‘superior’ drinks package, which gives guests an extensive selection of alcoholic drinks available both at lunch and between 6pm and midnight. The Rhine and Moselle package is their most affordable, starting in Cologne and taking you to beautiful towns like Koblenz and Rudesheim.

Virgin Voyages

In 2020, Scarlet Lady became the first ship launched by Virgin

Virgin Voyages offers adult-only cruises packed with a huge range of activities, from morning yoga classes to evening cabaret. There are plenty of solo cabins – their inaugural ship, Scarlet Lady, has 46 – and itineraries include solo meet-ups, activities and excursions with plenty of opportunities to meet other single travellers.

Packages include food, drink and activities as standard. With only four ships in the fleet, your choice of destination is slightly more limited, though you can still visit picturesque locations in Europe, the Caribbean , parts of Southern Asia and Australia. The Southeastern Caribbean Isles package will take you on a roundtrip from Puerto Rico, stopping in Guadeloupe, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian’s more affordable price point makes it an excellent choice for solo cruise guests

Norwegian was the first cruise company to build ships with cabins and lounge areas that were specifically for solo travellers, and there are now around 1,000 solo cabins across its ships. Solo travellers can choose from Oceanview rooms, inside rooms, rooms with a balcony and even studios, and they will have access to the Solo Lounge – a private lounge only for guests travelling alone – where various events and happy hours are held.

Normal packages include food and onboard activities, though several bookings let you choose to add extras – from shore excursions to speciality meals or a free bar – for a small added fee. Norwegian sail across a wide range of destinations too, from the British Isles and the Mediterranean to Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean.

Tauck has pioneered river cruising since 1928

Tauck claims to have specialised in solo travel for over 90 years, and today this translates to special solo savings and no single supplement on European river cruises. Travellers looking to see the continent ‘solo style’ can benefit from savings of up to £750, and will enjoy more stylish, contemporary ships with fewer guests for an overall more luxurious experience. Trips cover Europe’s main waterways, and prices include all food, drink, activities and shore tours. Choose the Yuletide package between Brussels and Amsterdam for a festive experience at some of the best Christmas markets – and prettiest waterways – on the continent.

Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador Cruise Line launched in 2021

Ambassador is a new cruise line where trips begin in cities around the UK , including Liverpool , Belfast, Dundee and Bristol. Both Ambience and Ambition have 89 dedicated cabins set aside for solo travellers, available “at a special single supplement against the equivalent twin fare based on selected single cabin categories”. The operator journeys to a vast range of destinations considering there are only two ships in its fleet, with voyages going as far as Singapore , Brazil and New Zealand.

Ambassador’s cruises contain an extensive programme of activities for solo passengers, including a ‘Welcome Get Together’ and guided tours together with other solo travellers. Other onboard entertainment ranges from West End-style shows to comedy nights, with plenty of opportunities to meet others. If cruising during winter, visit Norway to see wondrous fjords and (possibly) the aurora borealis, with the Land of the Northern Lights package.

Oceania has made considerable investment in providing options for solo travellers, with its newest ship, Vista, containing six 270-square-foot solo cabins that include balconies, premium lounge access and a welcome bottle of champagne. It has fitted its older ships with 14 ‘Solo Staterooms’, all of which offer magnificent sea views.

Oceania voyages make it easy to meet like-minded travellers with solo meet-and-greet events, large mixed dining tables, mixed shore excursions and single-traveller activities such as art classes. Destinations range from the Mediterranean and Scandinavia to South Africa and the tropics, meaning solo travellers have opportunities to see a large portion of the world alone. Book the 14-day  Miami to Tenerife cruise  to experience Mediterranean charm and Caribbean beauty in late March.

Royal Caribbean

Ovation of the Seas is just one of the six Royal Caribbean ships that caters to solo travellers

Royal Caribbean say that they do not “have specific pricing for single occupancy” cabins, but that they do offer single cabins on some of their ships, including Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. These cruises “can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee”, and they cover an extensive range of destinations, from Europe to the Caribbean and Singapore to Australia.

Passengers can reserve inside studio staterooms, virtual balcony staterooms and super studio ocean view stateroom with balconies, giving them between 101 and 199 square feet of space. Everything else will be the same as usual, meaning you can enjoy the same benefits as every other guests without paying a premium. If departing from the UK, the only tours available take you around Europe; the most extensive is the Mediterranean Cities package, covering Seville, Sardinia, Rome , Lisbon and more.

Solo traveller cruise dining.

One of the joys of cruising solo with Cunard is the spectrum of cuisines you’ll encounter on board, the majority of which are included in your fare. You’ll find signature dishes on each of our menus, inspired by the destinations in which our ships sail. And, while we’ll always keep a table reserved for you in your main restaurant, the choice of where and when to eat is entirely yours – as is the option to eat alone or with your fellow travellers. Simply let our front-of-house team know whenever you’re in the mood for company and we’ll happily accommodate you at a shared table.

How formal (or indeed informal) you choose to be at mealtimes is also your prerogative. Our ships offer a range of dining styles: from a la carte restaurants and a self-service buffet, to gastro pub classics and alfresco deck grills. Between 3.30-4.30pm each day you’ll be invited to indulge in finger sandwiches, patisserie, and our signature Cunard scones as part of our Afternoon Tea service. The midnight buffet, open from 11.30pm, offers warm cocoa and cookies to help you wind down for the night and if you wake up feeling peckish, our 24-hour complimentary room service is always on call.

Frequently asked questions for solo cruisers

Whether you want to visit new lands at your own pace, meet other people as you travel, or simply want some time by yourself in beautiful surroundings, cruising solo is a popular choice for many people.

With dining and a myriad of on board activities included in your Cunard cruise fare, you can be as sociable, active or relaxed as you want, no matter which Cunard ship or itinerary you choose. And, with special Cunard signatures such as daily afternoon tea and our glittering Gala Evenings, a solo cruise with Cunard offers a unique sense of occasion you're sure to savour for years to come.

If you're worried about feeling alone, there are ample opportunities to meet others through solo coffee gatherings, dining at a shared table, or other organised activities such as quizzes, fencing lessons or dance classes, Guests sailing transatlantic on Queen Mary 2 can even bring their cat or dog on board thanks to our kennel facilities , so you can have a piece of home with you every day of your voyage.

Once you have chosen your desired voyage from our current itineraries , click the red 'book now' button at the top of your screen. You will be asked to input the number of guests. This will default to two adults, so ensure you select one if you are travelling alone, as solo staterooms may not show if more than one person is inputted. You will then be shown available staterooms for the voyage.

Our solo staterooms come in two grades: Britannia Inside and Britannia Oceanview. Select these grades to see available rooms, select your fare, and complete the payment screen to secure your booking and begin dreaming about your upcoming cruise.

Solo travellers can also book a stateroom or suite suitable for two people. Simply follow the same instructions as above, and select the stateroom or suite that you desire. Please note that there is a supplement for a single guest occupying a double room.

Not if you don't want to: though you will always have a table reserved in your main restaurant (the name of which matches your stateroom type), you can eat with other travellers whenever you wish. Simply let our front-of-house team know, and they can accommodate you at a shared table or organise for you to join another travelling party.

Each member of the Cunard fleet is unique. Although each one offers the same freedom and choice in dining and activities to solo travellers, there are certain features on each that may suit individuals better.

Queen Elizabeth, for example, has a special games deck , where you can join in a casual game, sign up for some instruction from our team, or take part in a friendly tournament in bowls, deck tennis or croquet. For those who like to stay active and meet new people over some light competition, Queen Elizabeth would be a good choice.

Queen Mary 2 has a unique feature in Illuminations , her on board planetarium. With numerous daily showings, you can sit back and watch the show above you, and learn about the magnificence of space as you sail. Queen Mary 2 is also the only remaining ocean liner at sea, and contains many fascinating displays on board describing periods of nautical history, making her a good choice for those thirsty to learn and discover.

Queen Victoria is a favourite among our guests: similar in size to Queen Elizabeth, her guests benefit from her expanded sun deck and stunning Winter Garden venue. With floor-to-ceiling ocean views and a glass roof, this casual lounge is a perfect place to relax alone or to meet others, by day or by night. If fresh air and casual surroundings are what you seek, consider Queen Victoria for your Cunard voyage.

People travelling alone are welcome to join in any of the activities on the daily programme. This published programme will arrive in your stateroom each evening, so you can plan the following day or just see what takes your fancy hour by hour.

There are events each day specifically for solo cruisers, such as coffee mornings and cocktail gatherings, where you never know who you could meet. Another good way to meet others on board is to take part in classes such as fencing, line dancing or art, or to take part in deck game tournaments or casino games.

For a full range of our on board activities, including dining and bar venues, visit our Life on board page .

The best cruise lines for single people over 50

1. fred. olsen cruise lines.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is targeted at mature cruisers from the UK with activities and entertainment offered on board to reflect this.

The ships are mid-sized, and the daily programmes include painting, dancing, and cooking demonstrations, all of which offer the perfect way to spend time in the company of other people your age.

For single ladies looking to cruise with Fred. Olsen, you needn’t worry about not having a dance partner as each ship has gentlemen hosts in the evenings. There are female dance hosts, too. Each of the three ships in the fleet also offers solo cabins that are perfect for singles and have no single supplement.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

For a spot of luxury, Azamara offers a great onboard experience for international singles over 50. Butler service, fine dining and a great choice of immersive, destination-focused itineraries are just some of the benefits guests can expect with the cruise line.

Azamara’s cruise ships have plenty of lounges, bars and spots to enjoy a coffee alone or mingle with fellow passengers. Shore excursions, while focused on the destinations you visit, are also a great place to form new friendships in an intimate group setting. And, while dining, you can opt for a seat at a larger table in the Discoveries Restaurant, which is a great way to meet fellow foodies and strike up a conversation!

Azamara also offers special singles rates and promotions so be sure to look out for those.

Azamara Onward

3. Holland America Line

Many senior cruisers recommend Holland America Line as they cater to a mature audience very well. The cruise line offers enrichment programs that are suited to the interests of the over 50s.

For solo travellers seeking a holiday that is unique and offers the chance to spend a long time away from home, Holland America is very popular for bucket-list destinations such as Alaska and Antarctica.

If you’re looking at booking a singles cabin, the newest HAL ships – Koningsdam , Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam – each offer a selection of 12 solo cabins. Each of these boasts ocean views and measures up to 172 square feet.

Holland America's single cabin

4. Saga Ocean

Saga Ocean cruises have been built to cater exclusively for an audience of people aged 50 and over. In fact, 50 is the minimum age to cruise with this cruise line.

As well as this, Saga is also one of the most solo-friendly lines. Dedicated solo cabins feature on both the ships – Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure – and solo passengers can also attend social events and gatherings strictly for singles only.

As for exploring while ashore, Saga Ocean cruises also offer solo travellers the chance to buddy up on excursions which is an ideal way to meet fellow like-minded travellers.

Saga’s fares may seem high, but they include pretty much everything – including a car to pick you up from home and take you to the port.

Cunard is a great choice for those seeking a traditional cruise experience while travelling alone. Ballroom dancing, educational lectures and formal dress codes are just some of the features of a Cunard sailing that retired people most enjoy.

A keen dancer travelling alone can enjoy a waltz or two as Cunard has gentlemen hosts who will gladly take the ladies for a spin on the dancefloor in the evenings.

Cruises with Cunard can offer the chance to be entertained by shows inspired by West-End and Broadway theatre and cabaret, alongside speaker programmes which have seen the likes of Sir Michael Parkinson, former royal correspondent Jennie Bond, and politician Martin Bell.

6. Virgin Voyages

If you’re looking for something different, Virgin Voyages is a tongue-in-cheek cruise line that’s strictly adults only.

Fellow foodies, fitness fanatics and cruisers looking to enjoy day-to-evening entertainment will enjoy the lifestyle onboard as well as the chance to let loose with activities including sunrise yoga, 90s Boyband dance classes and a ‘shake for champagne’ novelty on the ship’s app.

The cruise line might not be best for those who shy away from technology or a more modern cruise experience, as the cabin lighting and electricals are all controlled from a tablet and much of the cruise experience is centred around using the cruise line’s app.

However, if you’re young at heart and seeking an energetic, fun and lively atmosphere with no kids on board, Virgin Voyages might just be the option for you!

Scarlet Lady

7. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line was the first line to offer solo cruisers their own cabin option and has won ‘Best Cruise Line for Solo Travellers’ for six years in a row by Porthole Magazine.

The Studio Staterooms available provide solo travellers with exclusive access to the Studio Lounge, only available for other solo guests. This offers complimentary refreshments and a quiet place to relax and hang out with new-found friends.

As well as great accommodation choices for those travelling alone, Norwegian Cruise Line offers chances for solo cruisers to socialise with others as most sailings offer singles meet-ups and bar crawls around the ship.

From 2024 there are a lot more solo cabins offered across the fleet, too.

Studio Lounge

8. P&O Cruises

For those looking to experience a quintessentially British cruise line, P&O Cruises is aimed at a UK audience with familiar touches to make guests feel right at home – great for those travelling alone in particular.

There are two ships in the cruise line’s fleet which are adult-only – Arcadia and Aurora. With British officers, a proper cup of tea (which you can make in your cabin!), pubs to visit and food geared to British tastes you can mingle with fellow singles just as you would at home, except while sailing.

For ballroom dance fans, look out for Strictly Come Dancing-themed cruises with P&O Cruises, perfect for enjoying your interests while aboard and meeting fellow fans!

With smaller capacities making it easier to get to know guests on board and ships which dock right into the heart of city centres, river cruises are ideal for solo travellers.

A popular cruise line for solos is Riviera Travel. The cruise line has been offering singles-only river cruises since 2018 which opens the ships up exclusively to solo travellers in all cabin categories without any additional single supplements. Perfect for splashing out on a suite if you’re feeling indulgent!

Useful things to know about cruising solo

If you’ve never cruised solo before, there might be some things you’re unsure of – so it’s worth explaining the basics as to how they work.

Firstly, you won’t be sharing a cabin with anyone if you book solo. Don’t worry about being placed in a cabin with a stranger, that doesn’t happen.

However, if you book a cabin intended for two people, you’ll have to pay a single supplement – which might mean paying as much as double the per-person fare.

The cruise line knows it’s losing money by booking one person in a two-person room so you have to make up for the shortfall. That’s why it’s worth looking for single cabins which won’t have that huge supplement attached.

When it comes to dining, it will vary not just by cruise line but by who’s onboard too. You can always get a table on your own if you want, but if you don’t ask for it, you might be placed with other solo travellers in the main dining room instead. Or you might not – but you can always let the maitre d’ know your preferences.

And look out in the day’s planner to see what events and activities are planned for solo passengers. Some will be attended by the crew to help facilitate things but others might just be a venue, and these can get awkward, especially if it’s a bar. You don’t know who’s there to attend the event and who just wants a drink.

To conclude

There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a solo cruise. Whether you want to sail along the river or the ocean; enjoy luxury or experience a more freestyle lifestyle onboard – there’s bound to be one to suit you.

Keeping an eye on solo traveller deals – making the most of reduced or excluded single supplement fees is a great way to save money on your cruise fare.
