The fireworks display over San Francisco Bay will start shortly before 9:30 pm (or once it’s dark enough) and lasts around 30 minutes — the best place to watch them is either on a 4th of July Premier Dinner Cruise , ferry, or from Fisherman’s Wharf, but there are a ton of great spots where you can see the fireworks from all over the city, so it’s easy to plan your evening. Be sure to check the Fisherman’s Wharf website for more specific information surrounding the fireworks display when it’s posted in June!

Can I bring my pet to the 4th of July events in San Francisco?

Definitely! It’s a good idea to confirm with any specific venues or events you plan on heading to, but overall, San Francisco is a very pet-friendly town — just make sure to bring a leash and some disposable pet bags.

Fourth of July San Francisco: Top Activities & Events for 2024

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler   •

Updated: July 19, 2024

Get ready for the excitement of the 4th of July in San Francisco! This year, the holiday lands on a Thursday, setting the stage for an unforgettable weekend packed with festivities and celebrations all over the city.

San Francisco's waterfront becomes a magnet for those looking to celebrate, with tens of thousands descending on Fisherman's Wharf during the day. This area is even livelier at night as up to 200,000 spectators gather near Aquatic Park and Pier 39 for the spectacular annual fireworks show.

My top picks for the Fourth of July in San Francisco? Spend the afternoon enjoying live music and entertainment around Fisherman's Wharf. Hop on a bay cruise for views around SF, and of course, you don't want to miss the epic fireworks display that starts around 9:30 p.m.

I also recommend getting to know San Francisco by bike riding around the city or spending some time on one of the free walking tours with SF City Guides. It's also fun to check out some wineries in Napa or Sonoma.

My guide also includes fun things to do during the 4th of July weekend, including a free concert in Stern Grove Park, baseball games, SF Jazz Festival, concerts, and theater performances.

Take a sneak peek at some of my favorite snapshots from previous Fourth of July celebrations, and get ready to make unforgettable memories in San Francisco this year!

San Francisco 4th of July Fireworks 2024

Fireworks Aquatic Bay San Francisco

Every year, San Francisco holds a large fireworks display over the bay. Two sets of fireworks, synced, allow you to get a glimpse from all around the area.

Both are along the waterfront in Fisherman's Wharf.

One set is on a barge near the end of the Municipal Pier in Aquatic Park, and other is on a barge in front of Pier 39.

Large parts of the waterfront are closed to cars due to crowds for the San Francisco fireworks display. I recommend heading down early and using public transit to get to and from this area for the fireworks display.

The Aquatic Park and Pier 39 fireworks display starts shortly before 9:30 p.m. (or once it's dark enough to start) and lasts around 20 minutes.

Click here for additional tips on attending this year's San Francisco July 4th fireworks display .

In addition to San Francisco, several other cities are planning large fireworks displays and festivals in the Bay Area. Visit this page to learn more .

Other Activities on Fourth of July San Francisco 2024

Several Activities around SF for 4th of July

Oakland Athletics Baseball

Celebrate Independence Day weekend in San Francisco with the American pastime—baseball! The Oakland Athletics host the Los Angeles Angels at the Oakland Coliseum.

The Fourth of July game starts at 1:05 pm.

I think the best way to get over to Oakland for the game is to take BART. It drops you right off at the coliseum and you won't have to battle the traffic or parking when you arrive. Pick it up at the Powell, Montgomery, or Embarcadero stops along Market Street.

Several BART trains will take you to this stop. Before you hop on a BART train, check the train lines to ensure you hop on the right one to get to the Coliseum.

  • Find tickets to this series .
  • Find out more about attending a game .

California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences , our most visited museum, is now open 365 days a year!

This means you can spend the day inside this interactive museum exploring its rainforest, seeing a show in the planetarium, or stopping by to say hi to its rare white alligator.

I spend about 2 to 3 hours here, but you could spend most of the day here. It's hectic this day, but this museum is SO worth the visit!

Pick up your tickets in advance so you don't have to wait in line .

Free SF Library Walking Tours

The Public Library offers several free walking tours each day in San Francisco. You will find several tours planned for the Fourth of July.

Some of the top tours planned for this Thursday include:

  • Golden Gate Park - East End, starts at 10 a.m.
  • Cable Cars - Halfway to the Stars, starts at 10:30 a.m.
  • Golden Gate Bridge - Starts at 11 a.m. (this is one of my personal favorites)
  • Pacific Heights Mansions - Starts at 11 a.m.
  • Japanese Tea Garden - Starts at 1 p.m.

You must sign up in advance for these, so make sure to visit their official site to reserve your spot!

Here is a full schedule for this holiday .

More fun things to do in SF on Fourth of July

Most SF attractions stay open during their regular hours on the Fourth of July. I've listed some above, and here are a few more options for you to check out throughout SF.

Alamo Square

I like spending a little time in Alamo Square during any holiday weekend. You can spend some time in the park soaking in the beauty of the famous painted ladies right across the street.

Grab some sandwiches and enjoy a picnic while you are here, or just swing by for a few photos. If you plan to visit for photography, I recommend visiting after 1 p.m. when the su n is shining on the front of these colorful houses.

  • More about the Painted Ladies around San Francisco

Exploratorium

The Exploratorium is open on the 4th of July in San Francisco and throughout the holiday weekend.  This fun, hands-on science and human perception museum is perfect for anyone visiting San Francisco with kids.

Fourth of July fireworks San Francisco

Where to watch 4th of July fireworks in San Francisco

These are the best places to watch the Fourth of July fireworks in San Francisco in 2022, from Pier 39 to boat cruises along the Bay

This year, the firework displays across the Bay Area return and there will be two sets of synchronized displays, one at the end of the Municipal Pier and another from the barges of Pier 39, so that you can see them from many vantage points around the Bay. The display starts once it gets dark, which is usually around 9:30pm and it lasts about 30 minutes.

Displays are also returning to other popular locations around the Bay Area, including the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, the Marin County Fair in San Rafael and Berkeley .

We've rounded up the best spots for viewing the show for whatever kind of experience you prefer, w hether you want to join the crowds at  Fisherman's Wharf  for live music and a front-row seat, set up a picnic at one of  San Francisco's best parks ,  or head out on a boat cruise  to see the sky light up this Independence Day.

And don't forget to stock up  San Francisco's best hotdogs , barbeque ,  ice cream to make your 4th of July in the Bay complete.

RECOMMENDED: 14 best Fourth of July events in San Francisco

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Where to watch the fireworks in San Francisco

1.  pier 39 & fisherman's wharf.

Pier 39 & Fisherman's Wharf

Head bayside and stake out a spot along Fisherman's Wharf , Ghirardelli Square , Crissy Field, Pier 39  or the Marina Green to catch San Francisco's annual fireworks extravaganza.

2.  Treasure Island

Treasure Island

Treasure Island , located right in-between San Francisco and the East Bay, is a perfect place to take in panoramic views of fireworks shooting off over the city and the Bay. You should be able to see the show in all its glory, without the crowds at Fisherman's Wharf. Warning: traffic on the Bay Bridge will probably be intense, so plan to leave early to give yourself time. Bring chairs or blankets to put down on the Great Lawn.

3.  4th of July Fireworks Cruise

4th of July Fireworks Cruise

Get on the Bay and under the action with a Blue & Gold Fleet  fireworks cruise . The July 4th cruises depart from Pier 39, Pier 41 and Tiburon from 8:15pm to 8:40pm, guaranteeing  front row seats for the City's spectacular fireworks show. General admission is $95, youth ages 5-11 are $85 and kids under 5 are free.

4.  Pier 7

Pier 7

While there's no grassy area to put a chair or blanket down on, if you're good with standing, this is a great spot for firework-viewing. Pro Tip:  grab dinner and drinks in the Ferry Building before heading over.

5.  Maritime National Historical Park

Maritime National Historical Park

This is another solid waterfront option for firework viewing — just make sure to show up early, given this is a tourist spot, so that you can find a spot to sit.

6.  Crissy Field

Crissy Field

Set up a picnic blanket along the beach or grassy area along Crissy Field to get stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and fireworks in both directions. while there's plenty of room, it's still a good idea to arrive early to stake out a spot.

7.  Bernal Heights Park

Bernal Heights Park

This park offers 360-degree views of the Bay, downtown, the Golden Gate Bridge, the East Bay and San Bruno mountain. There will mostly be local neighborhood folks here, and it will be a much more relaxed vibe than along the water. Just make sure to bring a jacket and mentally prepare for the possibility that fog may sweep in to make the fireworks a little fuzzy.

2022 Fourth of July Fireworks Show

See the Fourth of July fireworks along the SF waterfront.

Northern Waterfront

New Year's Eve fireworks are seen at night, along the San Francisco waterfront in front of the city lights.

The annual Fourth of July Fireworks will take place along SF's incredible northern waterfront. Fireworks will be set off from from a barge off Pier 39 and from the Municipal Pier, Aquatic Park, beginning at 9:30 pm.

Fireworks are best viewed from the Hyde Street Harbor and Fisherman's Wharf area. Other public areas to watch from include PIER 39 and the Pier 43 walkway.

Tips for the best fireworks show experience

Tips from the Port of San Francisco :

  • Make reservations early. Special cruises and waterfront restaurants may have limited or no walk-in options on popular holidays.
  • Plan to arrive early to get your preferred viewing spot.
  • Take public transit. The waterfront will get crowded closer to the show. See Muni extra service updates and  BART updates for July 4 .
  • Dress in layers. Temperatures at the waterfront can drop quickly after sunset and often get windy or foggy along the water.

Stay healthy while watching the fireworks

You can watch the fireworks from outside, at the waterfront.

Everyone who is eligible is urged to get vaccinated as soon as they can, including boosters. No insurance is required. To learn more, including where to get vaccinated, visit sf.gov/GetVaccinated or call 311.

You can  wear a mask for added protection , and get tested before and after attending the show.

We encourage everyone to sign up for CA Notify as an added layer of protection for themselves and the community to receive alerts when they have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. Visit canotify.ca.gov to learn more.

Enjoy the show, but leave fireworks to the professionals

Where to Watch Fourth of July Fireworks in San Francisco

San Francisco Fireworks

San Francisco has celebrated July 4 in grand fashion for decades. The City by the Bay’s waterfront location and hilly terrain make for a particularly spectacular fireworks show, with countless vantage points —that is, as long as the notorious summer fog ( his name’s Karl , by the way) doesn’t roll in.

Since 1979, the San Francisco July 4th fireworks celebrations have been focused on Pier 39. This year, the festivities kick off there at 3 p.m., with music (local cover band Mustache Harbor will be playing yacht rock favorites until 6 p.m.) and beer, before the fireworks ceremony begins at 9:30 p.m. Both the Pier itself and nearby Aquatic Park are prime spots for an up-close experience of the light show, but for five more prime locations for your viewing pleasure, read on.

Telegraph Hill

San Francisco’s famous hills provide excellent elevation for catching the fireworks off the northern waterfront. You can scope a panoramic, if distant, view from Tank Hill and Bernal Heights Hill in the city’s southern neighborhoods, but for a front-row view, head to the top of Telegraph Hill, at the base of Coit Tower . Bonus tip: carbo-load on pizza and pasta in North Beach before hiking the steep incline to the top.

Everdene at the Virgin Hotel

Those with rooftops in North Beach and Russian Hill are already well set up to view the fireworks show; for the rest of us, there’s Everdene, the Virgin Hotels San Francisco’s rooftop bar which opened this past spring. They’re hosting a watch party, complete with a barbecue-inspired menu, a DJ, and cocktails.

A Fireworks cruise

A friend with a sailboat is a fine thing to have, especially when it comes to fireworks-viewing opportunities. Thankfully, there are plenty of Fourth of July bay cruises for those of us with a less nautically inclined social circle. Options range from a 1920s-themed speakeasy party cruise , with DJs and an open bar, to a spin around the Bay on a 28-passenger, double-masted yacht . If you’re after a boat party with easy land access, the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien , a World War II-era Liberty Ship, remains docked at Pier 45 for the entire celebration. Bring folding chairs and blankets, and settle in for a prime view with the Bay Bridge in the background. Gates open at 8 p.m; arrive early to secure a spot.

Angel Island

A beautiful bit of wilderness in the middle of the Bay, Angel Island makes an appealing case for watching the fireworks off the mainland. Ferries run later to accommodate Fourth of July festivities ; expect food, drinks, and live music when you arrive in Ayala Cove. Tickets also include a round-trip tram ride to Battery Ledyard for a striking view of the fireworks, backed by the San Francisco skyline. The ferry departs from Pier 41/39 at 6 p.m and comes back from the island at 10:50 p.m.

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Angel Island pedestrian walkway may close at 9 p.m., but there’s no reason you can’t time a drive over the Bay’s expanse to catch the fireworks kicking off at 9:30 p.m. The northbound stretch offers a panoramic view of the city and the Bay. Head on into Sausalito for the grand finale around 10 p.m, topped off with a gargantuan scoop from the adored Laffert's Hawaii ice cream store.
