Who can travel from the U.S. to Canada?

How many border crossings are there between the u.s. and canada, checklist for a u.s.-canada border crossing, special cases for alaska residents, if you want to cross the u.s.-canada border ….

Borders between the U.S. and Canada recently reopened to travelers more than a year after having closed due to COVID-19. Now, many who are eager to explore our neighbor to the north are left wondering what’s involved in a border crossing and what guidelines they’ll need to adhere to for a successful journey.

If you’re anxious to visit Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary, here’s what to know to plan your U.S.-Canada border crossing, whether by land, air or sea.

Currently, Canadian borders are open to all U.S. citizens wishing to enter regardless of vaccination status. However, the requirements for entry will vary based on your vaccination status.

Fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative COVID test for entry, but must still use the ArriveCAN app to submit mandatory entry information, including proof of vaccination, at least 72 hours prior to arrival and/or before boarding a cruise ship destined for Canada.

Not fully vaccinated? You won’t be able to visit Canada if you’re traveling for discretionary or leisure purposes. If you don't qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler but still need to travel to Canada for reasons other than leisure, you’ll be required to quarantine for 14 days, take a molecular COVID test, and register for a COVID test upon your arrival in the country, which you can do in advance to save time.

» Learn more: What COVID test is required for travel?

There are more than 100 land border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, and wait time to cross can vary widely.

At most crossings, how long you wait depends on the time of day and the day of the week. Some crossings have little to no delay at off-peak travel times, and others, like Buffalo, New York, can log wait times around 40 minutes.

If you want to set appropriate expectations for how long it takes to cross the U.S.-Canada border, check the Government of Canada website , which is updated hourly.

» Learn more: Need a passport for a trip? Give yourself a big time cushion

If you're fully vaccinated and traveling to Canada, whether by car, plane or boat, you still have to follow certain protocols. To meet entry requirements, you must:

Have no symptoms of COVID-19.

Have received all doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 full days before you enter Canada.

Upload your proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN , an app that provides border crossing info and stores important documentation.

Have your required entry documents.

NOTE: As of April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative test for entry.

» Learn more: 4 differences between a passport book and card

If you don’t meet all the requirements of a fully vaccinated traveler, you’ll have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. You may also be selected for a random arrival test at some airports and land crossings. These may take place at the airport or a designated testing site, or you may be provided with a do-it-yourself kit that you can send in once you arrive at your final destination.

If you live in Alaska, you may sometimes have to drive through Canada to get to certain regions of the state. Unvaccinated Alaska residents who must pass through Canada for necessary purposes (i.e. not for leisure or recreation) may do so without pre-entry and arrival COVID tests, but they must remain in their vehicle while driving through Canada. They'll also likely be given a specimen collection kit when they cross a land border into Canada.

If you're leaving Alaska to travel to the lower forty-eight, or if you're returning to Alaska after being in another state, you may also be granted special permission to pass through Canada. However, if you’re not fully vaccinated you will need a negative COVID molecular test result to enter. You'll also need proof that you live in Alaska if you’re driving north, or proof of residence or employment in the lower forty-eight if driving south.

The key to a successful U.S.-Canadian border crossing is preparation. Make sure you know what documentation and information you need well in advance of your arrival at the border or the airport. Ensure everything is in order and uploaded to the ArriveCAN app, and be patient. Above all, travel safely.

Entering Canada

On this page, by private boat, required identification, permanent residents, travelling with children, you and the border services officer.

Whether you’re returning home or visiting, you’ll follow the same 3 steps to enter Canada:

Step 1. Pre-arrival: Use Advance Declaration or complete a Declaration Card

If you’re arriving by air at one of Canada’s participating international airports, you can save time at the border. Submit your customs and immigration declaration online using Advance Declaration up to 72 hours before you arrive in Canada.

If you choose not to submit your declaration in advance, you can complete it at an airport kiosk or eGate. If you’re landing at an airport without kiosks or eGates, you’ll receive a Declaration Card on board the aircraft or other conveyance. Read the instructions and complete the card before you arrive. Have it ready to present to Canadian officials at the airport, along with your identification and other travel documents. If you're travelling with children, please have their documentation ready as well.

If using a Declaration Card, detach and discard the instructions. To help us serve you faster, do not fold the card.

Everyone arriving in Canada must complete a declaration. You can list up to 4 people living at the same residence on one card, or 8 people per Advance Declaration submission.

The Declaration Card or Advance Declaration submission tells us what we need to know about you, your travels and what you’re bringing into the country.

Connecting to another flight

If you’re connecting to another flight or travelling on to another destination and re-boarding the same plane, follow the signs. At some airports, you may have to check your baggage and have it screened again.

If you travel frequently our trusted traveller programs can help

If you're a member of a trusted traveller program, you can skip Step 2 and go directly to the automated kiosks or eGates for faster processing.

Step 2. Arrival: First CBSA checkpoint

When you arrive at the terminal, follow the signs to the first Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) checkpoint, also called “primary inspection.”

If you used Advance Declaration, go to a kiosk or eGate to retrieve your confirmed declaration receipt. Up to 5 people may use a kiosk as a group upon arrival.

Next, a border services officer will examine your:

  • Declaration Card or Advance Declaration kiosk receipt
  • your identification
  • other travel documents

The officer may ask you a series of questions to determine:

  • your immigration status
  • the type of any goods you're bringing with you
  • your duty-free allowance
  • your personal exemption entitlements

Goods not properly declared that are restricted or prohibited in Canada can, under the law, be seized.

Newcomer or coming to Canada to study or work

If you’re a newcomer to Canada, coming to study or work in Canada, you may need to present further documentation. The officer will help guide you through this process. You may ask the officer for help if you don’t speak English or French well.

Step 3. Baggage and second CBSA checkpoint

Go to the baggage claim area. If you must pay duty and taxes, you can pay at most major airports while waiting for your luggage.

Once you’ve picked up your luggage:

  • go to the next CBSA checkpoint
  • Declaration Card, Advance Declaration kiosk or eGate receipt
  • receipt, if you paid duty and taxes for your goods

The officer may direct you to a secondary inspection area.

Here, officers may ask you:

  • for detailed information about your travels
  • to present your luggage and goods for examination

This is a normal part of the travelling process. Your cooperation is appreciated and helps us ensure the safety of Canada, its economy and its residents.

If you’re arriving by land, follow the signs to the first checkpoint, also called “primary inspection.” Here, a border services officer will examine your identification and other travel documents and take your verbal declaration.

Visit U.S. to Canada border wait times for estimated wait times at certain locations.

If you’re arriving by private boat, go directly to a designated marine telephone reporting site and call the CBSA Telephone Reporting Centre (TRC) at 1-888-226-7277 to obtain clearance.

Private boaters that meet certain conditions may report to the CBSA by calling the TRC using cell phone from their location in Canadian waters.

Learn more about reporting requirements for private boaters.

Make sure you carry proper identification for yourself and any children travelling with you to help confirm your legal right to enter Canada. Canada has introduced a new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), for certain international travellers who fly to Canada.

Read about the changes and how they may affect you.

The Government of Canada recommends that Canadian citizens travel with a valid Canadian passport because it’s the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document available to Canadians for the purpose of international travel.

International transportation companies such as airlines may require travellers to present a passport before boarding. Canadian citizens may face delays or may not be allowed to board the plane or other conveyance if they present other documents such as a:

  • Enhanced Driver's License (EDL)/Enhanced Identification Card (EIC)
  • NEXUS card (used where the program is available)
  • Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card used in FAST lanes
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • Birth certificate in combination with either a driver's licence or a government-issued photo identification

Permanent residents (immigrants living in Canada who are not yet Canadian citizens) need a valid permanent resident card to return to Canada. Check the expiry date on your card.

Note that a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship is not a travel document.

See Canadian Citizenship for further details.

Parents who share custody of their children should bring copies of the legal custody documents to the border when travelling with their children.

A consent letter should be used for all cross-border travel when a child is travelling:

  • with only 1 parent or guardian
  • in the care of friends or relatives
  • with a group, such as a sports, school, musical or religious group

Example of a consent letter to permit travel by a child with a single custodian or parent.

When travelling with a group of vehicles, parents or guardians should arrive at the border in the same vehicle as the children.

Adults who aren’t parents or guardians should have written permission from the parents or guardians to supervise the children. The consent letter should include addresses and telephone numbers where the parents or guardian can be reached.

Border officers watch for missing children, and may ask detailed questions about the children who are travelling with you.

You may occasionally find yourself going through a more detailed inspection. In some cases, this simply means that you may have to complete a form. In other cases, the border services officer will need to identify the goods you’re bringing into the country or examine your luggage.

Border services officers are legally entitled to examine your luggage as part of their responsibility to protect Canada's safety, economy and environment. You are responsible for opening, unpacking and repacking your luggage.

By making your goods easily accessible for inspection and having your receipts handy, you will be helping the CBSA to help you. It’s a good idea to keep all your receipts for accommodation and purchases, and for any repairs done to, or parts bought for, your vehicle. The border services officer may ask to see them as evidence of the length of your stay and of the value of the goods or repairs.

If you disagree with the amount of duty and taxes that you have to pay, please ask to speak with the CBSA superintendent on duty. A consultation can often resolve the issue quickly and without cost. If you’re still not satisfied, our officers can tell you how to make a formal appeal.

Border services officers may arrest an individual for an offence under the Criminal Code (for example, impaired driving, outstanding arrest warrants, stolen property, abductions/kidnappings) and for infractions under other acts of Parliament (for example, the Customs Act , the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ).

If you’re arrested, you may be compelled to attend court in Canada. You should note that anyone arrested in Canada is protected by and will be treated in accordance with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms .

Traveling to Canada from the U.S.? Here's what you need to know first

travel from ny to canada

ALBANY – The United States will begin reopening its land border to vaccinated Canadian travelers Nov. 8, marking an end to a closure that stretches back to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But those who live in the U.S. have already been able to cross into their neighboring country to the north since Aug. 9, so long as they follow a set of rules set by the Canadian government.

Among them: You have to be fully vaccinated for most nonessential travel. And you'll still have to get a test.

Here's what you need to know before traveling to Canada from the U.S.

Vaccination required for nonessential travel to Canada

If your travel isn't considered essential, Canada requires you to be fully vaccinated by the time you enter the country.

That means you must be at least 14 days removed from your second Moderna or Pfizer shot, or 14 days removed from your sole Johnson & Johnson shot. (The Canadian government also accepts the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has not been approved in the U.S.)

The 14-day period must be concluded before your first day of travel to Canada.

Unvaccinated travelers under the age of 12 can still enter Canada without having to quarantine so long as they are accompanied by a vaccinated traveler. If they are over the age of 5, they will still have to complete a testing requirement.

Testing required for travel to Canada, too

All travelers to Canada, regardless of their vaccination status or their citizenship, also have to show proof of a recent, negative COVID test before entering, according to the Canadian government.

And it can't be a rapid antigen test, either.

Canada requires travelers to take a molecular test before entering, which includes PCR tests. That will require some planning, since the time it will take to get your results will vary depending on location.

You have to take the molecular test within 72 hours of your arrival to Canada if you're arriving by land or sea. For air travel, it's within 72 hours of your scheduled departure flight.

The testing requirement applies to all travelers age 5 or older.

Had COVID recently? The testing rules are a bit different

If you had COVID within the last six months, the rules are a bit different.

Those traveling to Canada can show prove of a positive COVID test to be eligible for entry, so long as that test was from at least 14 days prior and as many as 180 days prior.

That's meant to cover those who have recovered from COVID and are no longer infectious, as well as those who continue to test positive long after recovering.

How do you show proof of vaccination to get into Canada?

With very limited exceptions, vaccinated travelers are required to use an application called ArriveCAN.

There, users can upload proof of their vaccination status before hitting the border crossing.

ArriveCAN can be downloaded in the Apple and Android app stores, or it can be accessed online .

What about unvaccinated travelers?

There are certain circumstances where the Canadian government will allow unvaccinated U.S. citizens to enter, including if they have a close family member (like a spouse) who is a Canadian citizen living in Canada.

But in many of those circumstances, the person traveling to Canada must commit to a 14-day quarantine upon entering the country.

To check if you're eligible to enter the country and what the requirements are once you arrive, visit the Canadian government's website .

Everything you need to know before taking a road trip to Canada

Victoria M. Walker

Canada on July 19 said it would reopen its borders to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens beginning on Aug. 9.

It will be the first phase of a two-step reopening process.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have been fully vaccinated (14 days past the final dose) will be allowed to enter Canada for nonessential travel purposes beginning Aug. 9. Canada also said it intends to open its borders to citizens of other countries as of Sept. 7 if the pandemic doesn't worsen.

The government said it's using a "border testing surveillance program" at its air and land border crossings. Fully vaccinated travelers will not need to take a negative COVID-19 test upon entry unless they've been randomly selected to take one. You will, however, need to pack a negative test result in addition to your proof of vaccination. (More on that later.)

Canada might be a suitable option for Americans who haven't traveled during the pandemic. Because Canada is drivable from many parts of the U.S., it's an excellent option for people who want to get out of the country but aren't comfortable yet flying long distances.

Here's what you need to know about driving to a reopened Canada.

How to enter Canada from the US

travel from ny to canada

There are dozens of entry points by land into Canada from the U.S. But the most visited include the Windsor-Detroit border, Buffalo-Niagara Falls; Port Huron, Michigan; Maine; and Blaine, Washington, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics data .

When you cross into Canada from the U.S. , a border agent will ask the purpose of your trip and whether you feel well. Travelers crossing the border by land must wear a mask, bring a negative test result, use the ArriveCAN app to upload proof of vaccination and follow border crossing procedures.

What documents do you need to drive to Canada?

travel from ny to canada

Driving into Canada from the U.S. is relatively simple compared to other destinations.

Travelers driving into Canada from the U.S. must have a valid I.D., such as a U.S. passport. Unlike most of the world, a passport card is also accepted on the land border . Children under 16 need only show proof of U.S. citizenship. The following forms of identification are accepted for U.S. citizens:

  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Passport card (for land and marine travel only)
  • Enhanced Driver's License (for land and marine travel only)

U.S. citizens who are members of the NEXUS program show their membership card as proof of identification when arriving in Canada by air (from the U.S.) land or sea. U.S. citizens in the FAST program can use their cards when arriving by land and sea only.

U.S. permanent residents are required to carry an electronic travel authorization (eTA) only when arriving in Canada by air. Their foreign passport must be linked to a valid eTA, and they must also travel with proof of their permanent resident status to qualify for a visa exemption.

Starting Aug. 9, fully vaccinated travelers won't need to take a negative COVID-19 test upon entry to Canada unless they've been randomly selected for testing. However, the pre-travel testing mandate remains in place even for vaccinated travelers. Travelers arriving in Canada by land or air need to take a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure. Both PCR and RT-PCR tests are accepted , but antigen tests are not.

Unvaccinated children under 12 will be allowed to enter Canada but must submit their information electronically through ArriveCAN and meet all testing requirements. Travelers need to be able to provide a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French, according to the Canadian government .

Use Nexus to expedite arrival

travel from ny to canada

If you're a U.S. citizen who visits Canada often, you may want to consider getting Nexus so you can also enjoy expedited customs processing there. It's a program between Canada and the United States for preapproved, low-risk travelers at designated air, land and sea ports of entry.

Nexus is 50% less expensive than Global Entry ($50 per adult and free for children under 18). However, you must enroll at a center along the Canadian border. Clearing Canadian customs and immigration can take a while, so this would save you a lot of time.

And once you have Nexus, either as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you also get Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. Nexus is available at 21 land locations when entering Canada. However, the Canada Border Services Agency implemented temporary lane closures that will remain in effect until "further notice."

Global Entry

travel from ny to canada

If you want to expedite your entry back into the U.S., you can also get Global Entry. You can enroll upon arrival at various airports in a handful of states , plus Canada, Ireland, the Bahamas, Abu Dhabi, Aruba and Bermuda.

Global Entry cards are acceptable at land points of entry for expedited entry into the United States via the SENTRI and Nexus lanes. However, you can't use your Global Entry membership to enter Canada through the Nexus lanes.

Coming back to the U.S.

Travelers coming back to the U.S. from Canada by land aren't required to have a negative COVID-19 test. However, travelers flying into the U.S. from Canada must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken three days before departure.

Travellers Visitors to Canada

October 1, 2022 : covid-19 emergency border measures ended.

Refer to COVID-19: Travel, testing and borders for details.

Have proper identification

You must carry proper identification for yourself and any children travelling with you to help confirm your legal right or authorization to enter Canada when you arrive.

All visitors arriving from or transiting through the United States should visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for information concerning the requirements to enter, transit through, or return to the United States.

Identification requirements for U.S. citizens and permanent residents

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you must carry proof of citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a U.S. Permanent Resident Card, or a Certificate of Indian Status along with photo identification. If you are a U.S. permanent resident, ensure you carry proof of your status such as a U.S. Permanent Resident Card.

For members of a Trusted Traveller program

U.s. citizens.

U.S. citizens who are members of the NEXUS program can use their membership card as proof of identification and citizenship when entering Canada by land, air or water. This applies when you are using either conventional or NEXUS-only lanes. U.S. citizens who are members of FAST may use their membership card when entering Canada by land or water only. When travelling by air, FAST cards will only be accepted as proof of identification when you are travelling to Canada from the U.S.

U.S. permanent residents

NEXUS and FAST members who are permanent residents of the U.S. must still travel with a passport and proof of permanent residence. You may be asked to present these documents to the Border Services Officer ( BSO ) when you arrive at the border.

No matter your mode of travel, we recommend you carry a valid passport for all travel abroad, including visits to Canada from the United States. A passport may be required by your airline or other transportation authority, since it is the only universally-accepted, identification document.

Identification requirements for international visitors

All international travellers must carry acceptable identification and a valid visa (if necessary) when entering Canada. A passport is recommended because it is the only reliable and universally-accepted travel and identification document for the purpose of international travel.

Electronic Travel Authorization

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada. Exceptions include U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (USLPR) and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens , and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for an eTA.

Certain low-risk foreign nationals from select visa-required countries may also travel to or through Canada by air using an eTA through the eTA expansion program .

Foreign nationals from select visa-required countries may also travel to or through Canada by air using an eTA, if eligible .

Be prepared: Apply for an eTA before you book your flight to Canada. Most applicants get approved within minutes. However, some applications can take several days to process so don’t wait until the last minute. Get help if you have questions before, during or after you apply.

Fake websites

Travellers who apply for an eTA are advised to be cautious in all dealings with companies that claim to offer help in getting an eTA. These companies are not operating on behalf of the Government of Canada. Many have established websites that charge a fee to provide information and submit eTA applications.

This Government of Canada website is the official place to apply for an eTA .

Travelling with minors

BSOs watch for missing persons , and may ask detailed questions about any minors travelling with you.

Visit the Children and travel page for more information about travelling abroad with minors.

What you can bring with you

As a visitor, you can bring certain goods into Canada for your own use as personal baggage. Personal baggage includes clothing, camping and sports equipment, cameras and personal computers. This also includes your mode of transportation, including vehicles, private boats and aircraft.

You must declare all goods when you arrive at the first CBSA port of entry. Our BSO s check goods you are bringing in or taking out of Canada to verify what you have declared. If you declare goods when you arrive and take them back with you when you leave, you will not have to pay any duty or taxes. These goods cannot be:

  • used by a resident of Canada;
  • used on behalf of a business based in Canada;
  • given as a gift to a Canadian resident; or
  • disposed of or left behind in Canada.

The BSO may ask you to leave a security deposit for your goods. Your deposit will be refunded when you leave Canada with the goods. If this happens, you will be issued a Temporary Admission Permit. We will keep a copy and give you one for your records. When you leave Canada, bring your goods and your copy of the Temporary Admission Permit, to the BSO . You will get a receipt and your security deposit will be refunded by mail.

Making your declaration

Every traveller entering Canada must report to a border services officer and answer all their questions truthfully. Travellers must also report goods they are bringing with them, including food, plant and animal products.

To ensure a smooth border crossing, have all required identification and travel documents in hand. Be ready to make a full and accurate declaration, including the amount of goods in Canadian dollars you are bringing with you.

If you arrive by land, follow the signs to the first checkpoint. A border services officer will check your identification and other travel documents and you will answer their questions.

If you arrive by private boat, go directly to a designated marine telephone reporting site and call the Telephone Reporting Centre ( TRC ) at 1-888-226-7277 to get clearance. For more information, visit the Private boaters page.

If you arrive at one of Canada's main airports , you can complete your customs and immigration declaration your before arrival with Advance Declaration.

At the airport kiosk or eGate, you will scan your travel document and verify your identity. The device will print your declaration and you will bring it to a border services officer.

If you arrive at a smaller Canadian airport, without a kiosk or eGate, you must fill out a paper E-311 CBSA Declaration Card prior to arrival and present it to a border services officer.

Use Advance Declaration and save time!

Submit your customs and immigration information with Advance Declaration up to 72 hours before you arrive in Canada using your smart phone or your computer. When you use Advance Declaration, you can access express lanes in the arrivals hall. Data shows that it’s up to 50% faster at the airport kiosk or eGate.

Instructions on how to complete the card are attached to the form. You can list up to four people living at the same residence on one card. If there are more than four people living at your address use one additional card for each additional group of four or fewer people. Once the cards are complete you can detach and discard the instructions. Do not fold the card.

Be sure to keep the card handy along with your identification and other travel documents. You will be asked to show this card to our BSOs several times.

If you have any questions about the card or Canadian regulations, ask the BSO when you arrive.

Referrals for secondary services and inspections

At any point during your interactions with our BSOs at a port of entry, you may be referred to our secondary services and inspections area.

We understand that travellers may feel anxious when crossing the border. Referrals to secondary inspection are a normal part of the cross-border travel process that any visitor to Canada may experience.

Why you may be referred to secondary inspection

You may be referred to secondary inspection for a variety of reasons, for example:

  • carrying out a random inspection;
  • verifying your declaration or documentation;
  • asking you more in-depth questions about yourself or inspecting your goods;
  • determining your admissibility to Canada or the admissibility of the goods in your possession;
  • having you pay duty and taxes;
  • completing or processing paperwork to support your entry or the entry of your goods to Canada.

All travellers are protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms . Referrals are not made on any discriminatory basis, such as race, nationality, religion, age or gender.

What to expect from secondary inspections

If you are referred for Secondary Services or Inspection, an officer may:

  • ask you to provide detailed information about your plans while visiting Canada, or the time you spent abroad;
  • make further enquiries, check records, or conduct research to verify your declaration;
  • confirm the guardianship of children travelling with you;
  • process the payment of duty and taxes;
  • inspect your luggage, purse or wallet, electronics (including laptops and cell phones), your vehicle and any additional goods you are transporting;
  • examine visually your pet or any animals travelling with you;
  • ask you to produce evidence of the money you have available to fund your visit to Canada;
  • request that you produce receipts to account for expenses you incurred or purchases made abroad; or
  • count your cash or travellers cheques, in your presence.

While most travellers we inspect comply with Canadian laws and regulations, we do encounter individuals who are intent on breaking the law and who attempt to avoid detection. That is why the officer may not always answer specific questions about a Secondary Inspection.

Travelling with alcohol and tobacco

Alcoholic beverages.

You are allowed to bring into Canada only one of the following amounts of alcohol and alcoholic beverages free of duty and taxes:

Alcoholic beverages are products that exceed 0.5% alcohol by volume. Certain alcoholic and wine products that do not exceed 0.5% by volume are not considered alcoholic beverages.

You must meet the minimum age of the province or territory where you enter Canada. Minimum ages are established by provincial or territorial authorities: 18 years for Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec and 19 years for the remaining provinces and territories.

The CBSA classifies "cooler" products according to the alcoholic beverage they contain. For example, beer coolers are considered to be beer and wine coolers are considered to be wine.

The quantities of alcoholic beverages you can import must be within the limit set by provincial and territorial liquor control authorities that apply where you will enter Canada. If the amount of alcohol you want to import exceeds your personal exemption, you will be required to pay the duty and taxes as well as any provincial or territorial levies that apply. Contact the appropriate provincial or territorial liquor control authority for more information before you return to Canada.

You must be of legal age in the province of importation. While you are allowed to import more alcoholic beverages than the amounts listed above, you will be responsible for paying duty and taxes on the additional alcoholic beverages you are bringing into Canada.

For more information on bringing alcoholic beverages to Canada, consult the Alcohol and tobacco limits page.

Tobacco products

As a visitor or a temporary resident, you may bring into Canada, free of duty and taxes, all of the following amounts of tobacco products, as long as these items are in your possession when you arrive in Canada:

You can speed up your clearance by having your tobacco products available for inspection when you arrive.

Whether they are stamped or unstamped, if you bring in tobacco products that exceed your personal exemption, you will be required to pay the regular duty and taxes as well as any provincial or territorial levies that apply on the excess amount.

Note: You must be 18 years of age to bring tobacco products into Canada under your personal exemption.

Stamped Tobacco Products – Personal exemption amounts

If you wish to import cigarettes, manufactured tobacco and tobacco sticks duty free as part of your personal exemption, the packages must be stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté ". You will find tobacco products sold at duty-free stores marked this way.

Unstamped Tobacco Products – Special duties rate

A special duty rate applies to cigarettes, manufactured tobacco and tobacco sticks that are not stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté".

For example, if you claim a carton of 200 cigarettes as part of your personal exemption and it is not stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté", you will be assessed at a special duty rate.

Unstamped Tobacco Products – Import limits

In addition to your personal exemption amounts, there are limits on the quantity of tobacco products that may be imported if it is not packaged and not stamped " duty paid Canada droit acquitté ". The limit is currently five units of tobacco products. One  unit of tobacco products consists of one of the following:

For short visits, these quantities may be limited to amounts that are appropriate in respect of the nature, purpose, and duration of the visit.

Restricted/prohibited goods

Certain goods are restricted or prohibited in Canada. To avoid the possibility of penalties, including seizure or prosecution, make sure you have the information you need before attempting to bring items into Canada.

The following are some examples of restricted or prohibited goods:

  • Firearms and weapons : You must declare all weapons and firearms at the CBSA port of entry when you enter Canada.
  • Food, plants, animals and related products : All food, plants, animals, and related products must be declared. Food can carry disease, such as E. coli. Plants and plant products can carry invasive alien species, such as the Asian Long-Horned Beetle. Animals and animal products can carry diseases, such as avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease.
  • Explosives, fireworks and ammunition : You must have written authorization and permits to bring explosives, fireworks and certain types of ammunition into Canada.
  • Vehicles : Vehicles include any kind of pleasure vehicles such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, snowmobiles and motor homes, as long as you use them for non-commercial purposes. There are many requirements that apply to importing a vehicle .
  • Consumer products : Certain consumer products that could pose a danger to the public (e.g., baby walkers, jequirity beans that are often found in art or bead work) are not allowed to be brought into Canada. Canadian residents should be aware of consumer products that have safety requirements in Canada . Many of these safety requirements are stricter than requirements of other countries.

For more information consult the Restricted and Prohibited Goods page.

Travelling with CAN$10,000 or more

If you have currency or monetary instruments equal to or greater than CAN$10,000 (or the equivalent in a foreign currency) in your possession when arriving in or departing from Canada, you must report to the CBSA. Monetary instruments include items such as stocks, bonds, bank drafts, cheques, and travellers' cheques.

This regulation applies to currency and monetary instruments you have on your person, in your baggage and/or in your vehicle.

When you arrive in Canada with CAN$10,000 or more in your possession, you must report it on the CBSA Declaration Card (if one was provided to you), or in the verbal declaration made to a BSO.

When you leave Canada by air with CAN$10,000 or more in your possession, you must report to the CBSA office within the airport, before clearing security or, if leaving by land or boat, report your intent to export to the CBSA at one of our offices.

For more information, including instructions on how to report your intent to import or export currency in person, by mail, or by courier, you can consult Travelling with CAN$10,000 or more .

Travelling with gifts

If you are travelling with gifts, do not wrap them before crossing the border. If a gift is wrapped, a BSO may need to un-wrap the gift to examine the goods you are bringing into Canada.

Can I enter Canada?

This process is commonly referred to as Ministerial relief.

You may apply for Ministerial relief using BSF766. Refer to the Guide to Applying for a Declaration of Relief Under Subsection 42.1(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act .

Overcome criminal convictions

Depending on the crime, how long ago it was committed, and how you have behaved since the conviction, you may still be allowed to come to Canada, if you:

Top 5 airlines serving from John F Kennedy Intl to Canada

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Really impressive staff at airport and on plane, especially given how busy it was

The upgrade was a pleasant surprise and I was sooooo tired of traveling these days. 10/10 just for that

Crew was great. However the seat I had would not recline and stay put. It would spring back to upright. Hopefully they can check the seats and maintain them. Otherwise the plane is clean and the crew is very friendly.

Lost luggage! No representative of the airline present at the airport. Air France contracted the service out to a 3rd party service. The service has no ability to track the missing bag or provide a time frame on its arrival.

Pricing of seats is difficult - price transparency has disappeared. First class, business class. Comfort plus, economy, basic…. Especially the pricing of seat reservation. Used to be but early get a better price; now it seems prices are falling as we get closer to departure. Miles ticket value has gone away. Give me a break. Everybody is playing the game of upselling and delivering lower service. When demand drops, so will the game of price gouging, but we’ll see.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

I booked this flight using JetBlue points and I was just so happy. The plane was so clean, I had every need met. Thank you!!

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

I hate their constant delays! It’s as if I cannot confidently make plans for timing when I'm traveling with them. I slept through it, so all I can say is it was good.

The staff at JFK were rude and unhelpful. I was harassed for the same bag that I used on my flight to jfk with no issues claiming it was the inappropriate size. The women then allowed my travel companion to board with the same size bag because they thought she was more “humble”. Also on the flight when informing the flight attendant that nationals no longer have to fill out the Bahamas immigration form my statement was met with eye rolling and attitude.

One of the crew members, a male complained about my bag being too heavy, which I felt was really unnecessary. I am disabled and would have carried it myself if I thought it was going to be a problem. In addition the landing was rough because everyone gasped in unison which it touched down.

Surly, unhelpful ground staff at JFK. There was a complete lack of empathy—a flawed check-in ordeal caused us to miss our flight. All airlines that I have ever flown would have worked to help me solve the ticket problem. Instead, frontline employees shrugged their shoulders and pointed fingers at us for having made an error. I will do anything to avoid EVER flying on Jet Blue again. It well deserves its low rank among airlines.

I'll nevere ever give up jet blue for years now and I will never change

From bag drop to boarding, it was great. In-flight is a little different. The seats were a little uncomfortable for that long of a flight. The rest of the cabin crew except for Eva was wonderful. Eva was not friendly at all. I've had to personally encounter her twice in-flight. First time was when I had to go to the lavatory in the back of the plane, and since it was the first for me to board such tiny plane, I didn't know we were using the crew toilet. She was giving me an attitude while telling me where and how to open it since it's not the regular push to open type of door. The second one was when I had to throw trash then use the lavatory again. I asked where to throw them, and unfortunately she was the only crew in the back doodling on her phone, she had to point it out to me with an attitude then told me to wait on the carpet, which I understand because I didn't realize that, but she could have been nicer. After all, I'm a paying customer, and assisting a passenger who isn't knowledgeable about the aircraft is one of the things she's there for. The rest of the experience and crew from bag drop to in-flight were excellent except for her.

It took an hour to get my bag after landing. Not exaggerating

food worker strike caused lack of service. I know, not your fault but a bit of a inconvenience.

The staff on the WestJet flight were friendly and helpful. The flight was smooth and we arrived 30 minutes ahead of time.

The on time performance and the ease of boarding are great. The crew were cordial. During landing the pilot made a hard landing with some swerve that was a bit rough but other than that everything else is as smooth as it can be.

Horrible, flight on the way to Vegas was delayed significantly and then on my way back my second flight was cancelled

If they have a tv for movie or map during 5h flight could be better and the food can purchase on flight are ok with that.

We requested 2 wheel chairs upon arrival. On board an attendant told us to remain in our seats until everyone was off the plane. we were in row 11 and thought we would be off early. After all were off, a different attendant said we should leave, and that the chairs were gone. One was available for my friend who had just spent 9 days in hospital but I had to walk quite some distance. Eventually a cart arrived to take us the rest of the way. This was over an hour after our arrival. The staff at the terminal did their best to help us but if we had been allowed off with the other passengers, our ride home would have been an hour earlier.

Our flight experience was great! Flight staff was funny and offered great service. Made record flying time coming home from Vegas after having to wait for planes on the tarmac because of high winds

Seats can use more cushioning, it felt very hard. The snack option could be better

Over all good. I had some issues with trying to buy my seat. The Westjet system kept trying to charge my credit card, without getting the seat. In the end after 5 times being charged, I got my seat.

I did not have a meal or entertainment, but flight was comfortable, beverage service was quick, crew was very helpful and pleasant. And a very smooth flight overall.

The flight was very uncomfortable and there was no snacks served for the 13 hours international flight. In addition, the flight was delayed 3 hours

It was great, love the experience and will definitely recommend 👌. Communication was great

The flight got canceled multiple times and we had to drive their to reach midnight for our next morning interview. Poor and unriable experience. Now have to ask for a refund since we didn't need their rescheduled flight three days later.

In flight wifi that I paid for was very slow and at times didn't work at all.

No food, not even snacks on the 6hr flight from Newark to Vancouver! The movie collection made up for it though and they did come around with drinks twice. Just good to know so you can eat ahead/bring snacks onto the flight. It was a bumpy ride induced by wind and rain but otherwise got to the destination safely and promptly.

Announcements were to loud, too insistent and too often. The same messages can be made in a nice relaxed, yet efficient manner. There is no need to "talk down" as if on a mild power trip. It's immature and unnecessary. This is a constant irritant especially with Air Canada. Learn from your European competitors to have a bit of class.

My flight was cancelled. The flight they booked me on was delayed over 2 hours with mechanical problems so I missed my connection and they ran out of hotel rooms, so I had to book and pay for it on my own. I also had to pay for food out of pocket. It was a terrible experience.

Date was for a day earlier than I realized and no email or text up on check in. At least I could have made an effort to re-arrange my schedule to use the flight. 100% write off + cost of new ticket.

The agents lied and said flight was completely full, (wasn’t even have full) then proceeded to take everyone’s roller bags even though there was plenty room to accommodate them on the flight.

The Air Canada agents in Newark are the best in the system!

It’s bare bones but was on time so can’t complain.

Of all the countries I've flown to and airlines from around the world, I have never had such a dismissive an arrogant employee during boarding. After waiting in line for 20 minutes to board, I was sent to a second line for Passport verification. Natalie from Flair, repeatedly tried to scan my passport which didn't work for some reason but was too lazy to input my information manually. Bar code scanners aren't 100% reliable as we all know. She asked me my birthdate 3 times, made me wait to be the last person aboard and then smugly threatened me that my only bag could be charged for (same backpack I used as on my arrival as carry on). Natalie working in Ft. Lauderdale and the was the epitome of lobotomized tiktok brain with the charm of junk mail.

Food selection is very poor and sears are very uncomfortable.

Flight was 3 hrs late and another 2 hrs wait for baggage to arrive on carousel and a $7.00 food voucher that arrived as we were boarding our flight.

Seat rows so close together no one dares to put their seats back. Knees pressed against the seat in front, had to find a position putting my legs under the seat in front. But for 6 hours keeping that one position was ridiculous. All savings on the purchase price are taken back through charge backs for luggage $200 each way, Seat selection $44 per seat or you are seated by a computer randomly. Wife sat 5 rows away. Would avoid Flair in the future

The flight was safe (priority). Everything else is low-cost: too hard, delays, mediocre boarding, cost for carry-on and checked luggage.

Flair flight was 4 hours late due to not having a crew and the plane was filthy. Just water service Terrible experience flight 1513

Flair did not notify you when they changed gate number!

Can't be happy with a 5 hour delay. Only given $10 voucher for food and still EVERYTHING was an upcharge during the flight.

TThe first time I have ever flown with flare and both ways sucked

Road Trip from New York to Toronto

There's no denying that the road trip from New York to Toronto is one that you can't afford to miss. The journey between two of North America's biggest cities lets you appreciate the beauty of nature and experience the vibrance of some sensational smaller cities.

The 500-mile road trip from New York to Toronto takes about 8 hours 30 minutes, and you can visit Woodstock, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, plus the stunning natural sights of the Hudson Valley and Niagara Falls.

For a relatively short road trip there's so much to do on the route between New York and Toronto, so read on to discover what you could enjoy on this fantastic journey, plus where to stay and the best time of year to travel.

How far is Toronto from New York, and how long will the road trip take?

The road trip from New York to Toronto is largely an Interstate drive that takes you through a number of cities. You will cover the entire 500-mile route in about 8 hours 30 minutes – if you don't make unexpected stops along the way. This means you could complete the trip in one day.

However, breaking up your trip over a few days will give you the chance to experience all that the road trip has to offer, from the beautiful Catskills and Hudson Valley, to the awe-inspiring views of Syracuse and Rochester and the exhilarating rush of Niagara Falls.

There are two possible routes for this trip. The quickest takes 8 hours 30 minutes and heads through Syracuse. This route lets you check out some iconic landmarks like the Erie Canal Museum or the historic city of Rochester.

Landscape with green grape vineyard, fall colors starting to show on the hills, and Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes Wine Country, New York.

Alternatively, you could travel along the Hudson Valley to Albany before meeting up with the Syracuse route in the north of New York State. This route is slightly longer, at 550 miles, and takes around 9 hours to drive.

Since the highways in North America are wide, well-signposted, and well-maintained, you can expect to have a smooth and memorable drive full of great experiences, no matter which route you take.

Best road trip route from New York to Toronto

With two fantastic route options available, the choice of which route to take depends largely on personal preference. Both of the routes we've described here take you largely along the Interstate, however they offer different stop offs along the way.

If you're looking to explore some of the stunning countryside outside New York then the Hudson Valley Route is a better bet. However, if you're more interested in visiting the cities of upstate New York then you might prefer to skip this and power on up the Interstate via the Syracuse Route.

Whichever route you take, make sure to check in advance whether you require travel documents. These are dependent on your nationality and any visas or permits you might already hold - plan ahead to avoid hold ups when crossing at Niagara Falls.

How to drive from New York to Toronto

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Quebec and Toronto. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The Syracuse Route

Take Interstate 78 out of New York, passing through the Holland Tunnel, then join NJ-24 towards Morristown. After around 13 miles merge onto the I-287 N which leads you onto Interstate 80.

Stay on the I-80 until Exit 293 then turn onto I-380 which takes you onto Interstate 81 at Dunmore.

Continue along the I-81 all the way to Syracuse, going through Otsiningo Park and Fingerlakes Trail along the way. You can stop here to see some iconic landmarks such as the Erie Canal Museum and Destiny USA.

From Syracuse, follow Interstate 90 and stick to the Interstate until you reach the outskirts of Buffalo. If you want to take a detour into the historic city of Rochester along the way, simply head in and out of the city along I-490 before rejoining the main route.

Once you approach Buffalo, leave the I-90 at Exit 50 to join the I-290, then merge onto the I-190 in the direction of Niagara Falls. Follow this road across Grand Island, then take Exit 21 to follow the Niagara Scenic Parkway to the Rainbow International Bridge. Don't forget to stop to enjoy the view at Niagara Falls as you pass through.

On arrival in Canada, follow ON-420 for a short distance before turning onto Queen Elizabeth Way, which leads you up to Lake Ontario. At Burlington, continue to follow Queen Elizabeth Way (ON-403) which takes you right the way into Toronto.

The Hudson Valley Route

Leave New York through the Holland Tunnel, following NJ-139, US-1 and NJ-3 each for a mile or two before you join NJ-17 heading north.

Follow NJ-17 as far as Hillburn, where you'll join Interstate 287 - crossing back from New Jersey into New York State - and then merge onto Interstate 87 heading north.

The I-87 takes you along the historic Hudson Valley all the way to Albany. Along the way you can leave at Exit 19 to visit Woodstock, before returning to the Interstate along NY-212.

As you travel through the Hudson Valley you also have the option to explore the beautiful Catskills, or some of the historic towns and villages along the way.

When you arrive in Albany, I-787 will take you through the center of the city. When you're done seeing the sights here, leave the city along the I-90. Once you reach Syracuse, simply follow the directions above to travel through Buffalo and Niagara Falls before arriving in Toronto.

Best places to stop between New York and Toronto

The road trip from New York and Toronto is filled with some amazing sights to see, so you should consider getting a hotel room so that you can spend more time sightseeing. Here are some resort options you should try out:

Find yourself in Woodstock

Although it's only a couple of hours out of New York, bohemian Woodstock is a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, making it a great first stop if you're taking the Hudson Valley Route.

If you're seeking self-discovery and calm after escaping the city, a visit to Woodstock's Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, KBD, is just the place to start.

The town is of course most famous for the legendary music festival of the same name - visit the independent stores and restaurants on Tinker Street to get a feel for the town's alternative vibe.

As you'd expect, Woodstock has its fair share of creative venues, with art, theatre and live music all on offer. Plus, it's a great place to base yourself if you plan on spending some time hiking through the stunning Catskills.

Yellow and blue flags with Buddhist scripts near the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Tibetan buddhist monastery.

The centrally-located river-side cabins of Woodstock Way Hotel are a fantastic accommodation option while you're in Woodstock . You can ditch the car for a day or two and walk to most of the town's eateries and attractions from here.

Cabins which merge seamlessly with their peaceful woodland setting cleverly combine a traditional rustic feel with exceptionally comfortable and modern presentation. It really is the perfect place to escape for a night or two.

Bask in the wonder of Mother Nature in Syracuse

Syracuse is located about halfway between New York to Toronto, and you'll pass it on both of these routes, but that's not what makes this city the perfect detour.

With an abundance of valleys, hills, streams, and lakes, Syracuse is an artwork of Mother Nature. Add to this attractions including the Eerie Canal Museum, the Everson Museum of Art, and a number of historic buildings, and you have a small city that's a great place to spend a day or two on your trip.

If you're staying in Syracuse, the popular Hotel Skyler Syracuse comes fully packed with everything you need to have an enjoyable stay in the city.

This fantastic hotel showcases the design features of the historic building it's situated in, which used to be the city's synagogue. It's just a short walk from the downtown area and the city's main sights, so you can really make the most of your time in Syracuse.

Another bonus for travelers on a road trip is that it's just a couple of blocks off the Interstate and offers free parking, which takes away another hassle when you arrive in town.

Feel the pull of the Falls in Niagara Falls

The magnificent Niagara Falls hardly needs an introduction - it will be one of the highlights of your journey that you definitely should not skip.

It's only a couple of hours from Niagara Falls to Toronto, but spending a night here allows you to take your time seeing the Falls, and means you're not rushing to get to Toronto if you're held up while crossing into Canada.

If you want to stay in a place which really showcases the town's most unmissable feature, the Hilton Hotel and Suites Niagara/Fallsview provides a stunning floor-to-ceiling view of the Falls .

On top of this, the hotel's indoor pool and stylish bars offer the perfect opportunity for relaxation before you reach the end of your trip from New York to Toronto. It's also connected via a glass walkway to the Fallsview Casino's Entertainment Center.

The hotel is in walking distance of Falls-related attractions including Journey Behind the Falls, or take a tour for even more stunning views - cruise, white water and helicopter options are all available depending on your preference and budget.

The town's history is about so much more than just the Falls though. While you're here you could visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center to learn about the part this border town played in helping former slaves reach freedom. Or take a trip to Old Fort Niagara to appreciate the battle for control between British, French and Native American forces.

Best time to go on a road trip from New York to Toronto

The road trip from New York to Toronto can be made at any time of the year, thanks to the fact that most of the journey is mostly Interstate.

That being said, note that there are many attraction sites between New York and Toronto, which might attract tourists, especially between June and August – the typical peak tourist season – so you should monitor traffic as you go.

The border crossing into Canada can also experience delays over the peak period.

High rise buildings of Toronto skyline viewed across frozen Lake Ontario

Spring and fall are generally the times when you'll catch the most comfortable weather. Temperatures in May/June and September/October usually sit around 70 degrees, or if you travel a little later in the fall you'll be able to enjoy the magnificent changing colors of the region.

This isn't to say you can't also take this trip in the winter - see New York's sparkling Holiday decorations, ride through Central Park in the snow, and catch stunning, wintery views of Niagara Falls.

However, some of the outdoor attractions along the route won't be accessible, and you would need to pack serious cold weather clothing.

In general, summer would be a great time to take a trip from New York to Toronto. If you prefer something different, you can go in the winter, as Niagara Falls is especially beautiful at that time of the year – if you can brave the cold weather.

Whether you are traveling from New York or taking the train from Seattle to Banff, there are many benefits to a Canadian train vacation. Canadian rail journeys offer an experience that can't be found south of the border.

The second largest country in the world, Canada has so many wonders — from the autumn leaves of New Brunswick to the eerie rock formations of the Alberta badlands and the soaring peaks of the Rockies.

A journey by train in Canada is not just a mere commute — it is an adventure. The scenery you'll travel through will dazzle and the stations along the way are historic monuments to the early pioneering days.

  • Remote untamed scenery : Canada's pristine wilderness is vast and untouched. The diversity of the scenery will blow you away. You might have seen photos of the craggy peaks and glaciers of the Rockies, but did you know there are arid deserts and sun-soaked vineyards in British Columbia? Or limestone grottos and caverns in Ontario.
  • Exciting and unique cities : Each Canadian city has a distinct personality. Montreal offers exciting events, like its Jazz Festival. Quebec City will make you feel like you've been transported to France. Toronto has a diverse culinary scene and world-class museums. Vancouver's got a laid-back vibe and a backdrop of ocean and mountains.
  • Your money goes further : As the Canadian dollar dips in value compared to USD, you'll get more bang for your buck when you travel in Canada, and US residents can take advantage of this favourable exchange rate. For even better value, take a Canadian train journey during the winter. It can be a great time to find deals on airfare and accommodation.

Crossing the Border into Northern Ontario by Car? Read this.

travel from ny to canada

Over a million U.S. travelers drive across the border into Canada every month for work, pleasure, or to visit friends and family. It's a simple, straightforward process—especially if visitors come prepared. On rare occasions, a lack of preparation or knowledge of regulations can lead to extra inspections or even a fine, and no one wants that! So read on to discover everything you need to know to ensure a smooth entry into Canada. If all goes well, the whole process may take just a minute or two, and you'll be ready to begin your Northern Ontario adventure.

Check Border Wait Times

travel from ny to canada

Before you head out, you’ll want to double-check the border wait times. Delays are not unusual, especially during peak travel days and weekend evenings. Fortunately, the Canada Border Services Agency provides a  helpful, frequently updated tracker of major border crossings, which notes slowdowns and gives current wait times.

Bring the Proper ID

If arriving by land, follow the road signs to the Canadian border where you will encounter the first checkpoint for a Primary Inspection. Choose a lane, wait your turn, and pull up when the vehicle in front has cleared the checkpoint. Here a border security officer will ask for your identification and other travel documents, take a verbal declaration, and ask you a few questions.

Since the first question you will likely be asked is to present your ID, you’d better have it. International travelers must carry approved identification—generally a passport though  other documents may work in specific cases—and (if necessary) a valid visa.

U.S. citizens who are members of one of Canada’s Trusted Traveller programs can use those membership cards as an alternative to their passport when traveling by land. Simply drive into one of the dedicated  NEXUS or  FAST   vehicle lanes , stop and hold up the membership card in front of the proximity card reader to be scanned. From there, you will proceed to the inspection booth for visual inspection. The border officer will either wave you through to Canada or may ask you to enter the inspection area. Note that U.S. permanent residents still must bring a passport, in addition to their NEXUS or FAST membership card.

Answer the Border Security Officer’s Questions

travel from ny to canada

You may be asked a number of questions while at border security. Typical questions that you will be asked at the Canada border include:

  • What is the purpose of your trip?
  • How long do you intend to stay?
  • Where will you be staying?
  • What is your occupation?

Answer these questions honestly and to the best of your ability. If you have kids in your vehicle, the officer may even ask them a few questions, too, to ensure they're safe and travelling with people they know. Once the questions are out of the way, on to the next step!

Make a Declaration

After presenting your ID and answering these questions, the border security officer will ask if you have anything to declare. You’ll need to declare if you have any  firearms or weapons , currency valued at  CAN$10,000 or above , as well as certain types or amounts of food, plants, or animals (go here for  those specific rules ). Limited amounts of  alcohol and tobacco products are permitted, but be sure you’re under those maximums. A few other points to keep in mind.

Leave Prohibited Items at Home

There are a number of items you want to be sure are not in your car when you approach the border. This includes firearms, cannabis, as well as firewood or goods contaminated with soil. The CBSA offers a  full list of prohibited or restricted items here . A number of specific restrictions apply to food, plants, and animals, so be sure to review before you head to the border.

If You or Anyone in Your Vehicle Has a DUI You May Not Be Allowed Entry

Americans with a conviction for driving under the influence may not be allowed entry into Canada--entry will be granted at the discretion of the border guard. While in some states a DUI may be considered a traffic violation or misdemeanor, in Canada a DUI is a criminal offence. It goes without saying that it's important to not misrepresent yourself or make false statements when speaking to a border control guard. If you do have a DUI and want to travel to Canada, there are options. Look into applying for a Temporary Resident Permit or apply for a Criminal Rehabilitation if the conviction was more than five years ago.

It's Illegal to Bring Cannabis Across the Border

Cannabis and cannabis products are legal in Canada but crossing the border with them is not . Even if you're using it for medical purposes, or are travelling from a jurisdiction where it's legalized, it won't be allowed across the border. Leave it at home, and seek out a provincial cannabis dispensary when you get to your destination. And remember, it's also illegal to cross back into the U.S. with cannabis products.

Be Sure Pets Have Their Papers

Dogs and cats that are three months of age or older  require valid certifications from a veterinarian confirming they have received their vaccinations against rabies. If you are traveling with pets, they will be subjected to an inspection of their documents and of the animals themselves, which will cost you $30 plus tax (plus an additional $5 for every additional animal).

Keep Gifts Unwrapped

If you’re traveling with gifts for family or friends you are visiting, be sure to leave them unwrapped, as a border security officer may need to see what is inside of them and will have to undo all the hard work you put into the wrapping.

Prepare for a Secondary Inspection

While most Primary Inspections will move along quickly and you will be sent on your way, it’s not unusual that during the inspection, you will be directed to a separate area for a Secondary Inspection. According to the Canada Border Security Agency, these may be conducted for a number of reasons, including:

  • Conducting a random inspection;
  • Asking for more in-depth answers about yourself, your trip, or your goods;
  • Verifying your documentation or declaration;
  • Having you pay duty and taxes;
  • Or completing additional paperwork.

As this list indicates, at the Secondary Inspection, an officer might request a wide range of things, from inspecting your luggage or pets, processing your payment for duty and taxes, or requesting more detailed information about your travel plans. As with the Primary Inspection, provide thorough, accurate answers and give the BSO what they request to the best of your ability. A secondary inspection is fairly routine and nothing to be anxious about as long as you’re following the rules.

Make Your Way Across the Border

Once you’ve satisfied the border security officer, they will wave you on and you can cross the border and be on your way.
