Phuket Tour Guide
Getting there.
Phuket is an island, though it seems to be a much easier island to access than many others in the world. The vast majority of visitors simply arrive through Phuket International Airport, located around 24 miles from the city center.
It’s usually cheaper to fly into Bangkok, however, so if you’d like to see Bangkok you may just want to allot a day or two there. From there, you can simply take the train from Hua Lamphong Station to Surat Thani and then take a bus to Phuket. You should not miss Bangkok, we would recommend a tour of the city .
Getting Around
Phuket is pretty simple to navigate, thank goodness. You’ll find many varying private and public transportation options. If you’re staying in a resort area, you may just be able to walk around without even thinking of 3 rd -party transportation.
Tuk-Tuk – These are unique to a lot of people, and the experience can be a fun one. However, they’re more ideal for shorter journeys, due to their small size and rather bumpy ride at times. Not only that, but if you’re in a resort area like Patong, they can get kind of pricey. Make sure you agree upon a rate before heading off.
Taxis/Grab – Taxis are pretty much everywhere around Phuket, but particularly in tourist spots and resort areas. Metered taxis are also located right outside the main entrance/exit at the airport. For the first 2 km, fares will be 50 baht and around 8 baht for each km after that. If you’re going long distances, try to settle on a flat rate beforehand.
There is no Uber here, but instead “Grab”. This app-based service is preferred by many visitors as it’s more reliable and gives you more of a sense of security as your ride is tracked and your rate is already settled.
Buses – Known as “songtaews”, these open-air buses are bright blue and easy to spot. The cool thing is they even write the destinations in English if you don’t speak Thai. Just be prepared to be able to flag one down, as there are no established bus stops. Buses operate from around 7 am to 6 pm, and are very affordable.
Motorbike – If you’re brave enough, you may just choose to rent a motorbike. 50-cc Hondas and big bikes are the most common type, and are very cheap. However, you need to know that many drivers operate with complete disregard for the laws and others on the road. Not only that, but if it’s a wet season, roads can become very slippery and difficult to navigate.
Motorbike Taxis – If you are going to hop on a motorbike, you may be better off with a local driving it for you. They are familiar with the way other locals drive, the weather conditions, and so on. This makes it much safer and more reliable. You can find them at moto taxi stands, usually with the drivers wearing red or green vests.
Where to Stay
Phuket may be an island, but it’s one of the more lively islands in Thailand. However, whether you’re going to party or to vacation as a family, there’s something for everyone. Each beach has a different vibe to it!
Phuket Town – If you’re going for the sightseeing and absorbing the culture more than anything, just stay here. You’ll be able to access some of the most popular attractions like the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong Temple, and elephant sanctuary. Not only that, but it’s easy to walk to hotels, temples, markets, and restaurants.
Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon – If your main priority is seeing the amazing beaches, then stay in any of these areas. Patong is one of the main beaches, but is usually very overcrowded while many others are uncomfortable and not quite as beautiful.
However, these 3 are all located inside a national park. They have beautiful white sands, gorgeous views, and have a more private feel to them. Nai Yang is notorious for being so close to the airport runway that you feel like you could almost reach out and touch the airplanes! Kata is another honorable mention, with some of the best swimming on the island.
Bang Tao – Bang Tao is perfect if you are a water sport kind of person. That could mean jet-skiing, going out on a speedboat, parasailing, etcetera. If you’re into receiving top-notch spa treatments, Bang Tao is also the way to go. If you’re feeling sore, you can’t skip receiving a massage here.
Patong – Patong is the center of nightlife and all the hustle-and-bustle of Phuket. You’ll find clubs bumping with loud music, all kinds of “entertainment complexes”, and extravagant shows. If you’re coming with the entire family, you may want to steer clear of staying in this area, though.
Kata Yai, Kata Noi – Are you a serious foodie? Then you should be staying in either of these areas. You’ll find everything from world-class bistros to makeshift stalls at the beach serving up delicious dishes. Whatever you’re looking for as far as food goes, you’ll find it here.
Restaurants and Eating Out
As we just mentioned, Phuket has a variety of tasty food options and there really is something for everyone. With that being said, we recommend trying both formal restaurants and food stalls for best results.
One Chun Café and Restaurant – Located in Old Town, this restaurant is consistently rated as one of the best on the island. With a wide variety of dishes (try the crab yellow curry), it has a very vintage feel with brick walls and all kinds of old clocks and TV sets!
Raya – Okay, so this is from the same owners as One Chun, but it just can’t be left out! Known for their classic local dishes like moo hong or slow-cooked pork belly stew, they really take their time in making sure each dish is served to perfection. It’s located right around the corner from One Chun, too!
Ko Ang Seafood – This place has been around a long time, and is known for being one of the best seafood spots in Old Town. You’ll find everything from popular dishes to exotic options like red ant eggs or horseshoe crab.
Lock Tien Food Court – If you go to Phuket, you have to make a visit to Lock Tien. It’s been serving up delicious food for over 50 years to locals and tourists, alike. Located on the corner of Dibuk and Yoawarat, you can try a delicious traditional dinner like por pia, or a cool dessert like oh aew. O-aew is a Thai shaved ice dessert topped with many ingredients like red bean, grass jelly, and of course o-aew: a type of jelly made with banana and herbs.
Kwong Shop Seafood – Here’s another prime seafood spot, and if you’re in Kata Beach, we highly recommend stopping by. Crab curry, hot pot, steamed squid, entire fish – they have it all and it’s super cheap for the quality and quantity received.
Sugar & Spice – This place melds western dishes with Thai favorites like pad Thai, pineapple rice, and som tam. It’s not all that exciting, but it’s a good option if you or another in your group isn’t that adventurous with food.
Nightlife and Entertainment
- Soi Bangla Road – This place goes crazy after the sun sets! You’ll find all kinds of lavish clubs to sophisticated lounges and everything in-between.
- Wassa Homemade – Located right on the coast, this is a wonderful date night spot if you’re looking for chill music, great conversation, and excellent cocktails. The views are unbeatable, and the service is fantastic.
- Seductino Nightclub – This trendy spot is a massive club, with famous DJs every night.
- Simon Cabaret – One of the most popular places in Phuket, it has great digital sound and visual effects.
- Siam Niramit – This is undoubtedly one of the most unique shows on the island, and has an almost Vegas-esque feel to it. If you’re bringing the whole family along, this is one of the top recommendations. Complete with over 100 performers, glamorous costumes, and elaborate sets, there’s never a dull moment.
- Boat Bar – This is a fun place with friendly staff, cool decorations, great music, cabaret some nights, and more.
- Kee Sky Lounge – This rooftop bar is just steps away from Bangla Walking Street. The rooftop is designed to look like a cruise ship deck, and is always fun with great cocktails and views of the Andaman Sea.
- Kudo Beach Club – Okay, so this club does open at 10 am, but it goes until midnight so you always have a party to go to!
Generally speaking, Phuket is quite warm throughout the entire year. Temperatures range from around 77 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, and seasons are pretty much just divided into the “rainy season” and “dry season”. These periods depend on the tropical monsoon.
Dry season starts in December, lasting until around March. You’ll see clear skies, calm waters, and light breezes with temperatures in the high 70s, typically. As you can imagine, this attracts a lot of tourists and is known as the high season.
Rainy season starts in June and lasts until October. This is when the monsoon comes in, with intense winds, lots of rain, with hot and humid weather. It’s not quite as pleasant, considering many times you won’t be able to be out on the water. Going to the beach may result in sand blowing all over, and raining you out.
Attractions
Kata Noi Beach – Phuket has a ton of great beaches, but Kata Noi remains one of our favorites. It’s small in size but huge in beauty. Take a walk along the pristine sand while just enjoying the view or taking a swim in the water.
Chalong Bay Rum Distillery – If you’re a rum fan, you’ll love learning about how it is produced. Not to mention, after the tour you get to participate in a cocktail workshop and bar, where you’ll learn how to make various cocktails that include the house rum.
Big Buddha – This is an absolutely massive marble Buddha statue, at almost 150 feet tall! While the Buddha alone is a great motive for heading there, you also get some of the best panoramic views of the island from the top of the hill.
Nai Harn Beach – This is one of the most popular beaches, with soft white sand and crystal-clear blue water. There are many delicious restaurants nearby, so we recommend grabbing a bite to eat and then coming to sit under the shade of a large tree on the beach.
Karon Viewpoint – Right next to Kata Noi is Karon Viewpoint, which offers some of the best lookout points on the whole island.
Phuket Town Weekend Night Market – The locals call it “Maka Market”, and is the place to be at night on the weekends! It’s crowded with tourists and locals, yes, but there are so many delicious foods and fun items to purchase and look at here.
Wat Chalong and Phuket Temples – Wat Chalong is one of the most important temples in Phuket, with incredible intricacy and a fascinating history. It’s gorgeous from a distance, but head closer and you’ll see the innumerable pieces of glittering glass.
Bangla Road – It’s definitely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, so prepare yourself for that! But if you are ready for adventure and have a sense of humor, you’ll be just fine.
Phang Nga Bay – If you have ever seen the James Bond movie, The Man With The Golden Gun you will recognize it. The “ James Bond Islands ” are a popular tourist attraction.
- Don’t drink the tap water. Just drink bottled water, and make sure that the bottle is sealed. Ice is made with clean water, and you don’t have to worry about it.
- Bring mosquito repellent or purchase some right when you arrive. Dengue and malaria aren’t that common, but it’s still annoying to be itching the entire time.
- When at temples, you need to be respectful. Cover your shoulders and legs at least to the knee. Remove shoes and hat before entering any temple.
- Be respectful of any image of Buddha. Buying statues and/or getting Buddhist tattoos if you aren’t Buddhist is not only considered very disrespectful, but in some cases, even illegal!
- Public criticism of Thai royalty is illegal, and if the national anthem is played in public or even before a movie in the theater, you should stand.

The Ultimate Guide to Phi Phi Island Tours
- Author david
- Date February 7th, 2020
Phi Phi Islands are some of the most well-known islands in Thailand, and rightfully so. A natural wonder of South-East Asia. The unique beauty of the archipelago is like no other. But why do people visit Koh Phi Phi , it’s simple, aside from the relaxed atmosphere and laid back lifestyle, taking a Phi Phi Island Boat Tour is one of the most rewarding & fulfilling experiences in Thailand.
Without a doubt, snorkelling with Koh Phi Phi’s marine life, cruising around and island hopping on a local Thai boat is one of Thailand’s greatest attractions.
So if you’re seeking a slice of tropical paradise to swim, snorkel, relax and lap up the sunshine. Beautiful clear blue oceans, white sandy beaches and pristine limestone formations. Koh Phi Phi is the place for you!
There is no better way to immerse yourself in nature than on a Koh Phi Phi Tour . There are day tours heading out and around the islands stopping at amazing locations like Maya Bay, Pilleh Lagoon, Loh Samah Bay, Viking Cave & the Monkey Beach.
But the greatest thing about an overnight stay on Phi Phi Island is not being pushed for time, not having a deadline to meet in order to return. You’ll feel free relaxed and able to take the Phi Phi tour at leisure.
If a visit to these islands is not already on your list, consider refreshing your Thailand itinerary, making sure to leave time for a few days spare; to chill out in paradise.
In this post, I’ll cover the basics about booking Phi Phi Tours Online & Offline, tours from Patong, Phuket and Phi Phi Don island itself.
WHERE TO BOOK A PHI PHI ISLAND TOUR
You’ll be hit with such a huge magnitude of results when researching the best boat tours in Koh Phi Phi, and with so many tour operators all offering somewhat similar tour packages. It can be a pretty daunting task to begin sorting through all the potential possibilities.
Five Star Thailand Tours can help out when it comes down to Phi Phi Island Tour bookings. Their small group sizes, and focus on quality Phi Phi tour packages really set them apart from the rest.
The natural beauty of Koh Phi Phi and the close proximity to Krabi and Phuket make the islands so desirable, and a natural magnet for tourism.
Unfortunately, many boat tour operators have shamefully taken advantage of the islands popularity. It’s a common sight, to see boat tours leaving the shores packed with 20 – 35 (disappointed looking) tourists, on a single longtail boat.
When booking a Phi Phi Island Boat Tour, the best piece of advice I can give is to book with a reputable operator like Five Star Travel. When looking for a Phi Phi Tour Company, you are ideally looking for someone that operates their own tours and limits passenger numbers.
In this day and age, most legitimate tour companies have shifted to the digital era, offering online reservations.
It’s usually best to reserve tours in advance, as the most popular packages tend to fill up quickly! Especially during the peak season, which falls from November thru April.
Of course, it is still possible to take the old-school route and book a boat tour in person, after arriving on Phi Phi Island ( or Phuket ). There are literally hundreds of travel shops scattered over Koh Phi Phi. You won’t have any difficulties finding a Phi Phi Island Tour agent, itching to sign you up.
But here’s what to watch out for. The agents selling tours from shops, & kiosks, generally speaking, don’t operate any tours themselves. So you’ll be sold a boat ticket, the ticket seller will earn a small commission and you’ll find yourself on the same boat tour, regardless of where you end up booking your Phi Phi tour!
With hundreds of touts, re-sellers and stalls all competing for your cash, all selling the exact same boat tours, and no way to differentiate themselves from other sellers. Competition is fierce.
So it’s not uncommon for the salesmen to feed you a few white lies in order to close a sale. They’ll often claim that if you book with them there will be a smaller group on the boat, their captain speaks better English, or the food on their’ tour will be of better quality. It’s only when it’s too late that you find out just how untrue this is. If it seems too good to be true it probably is!
Koh Phi Phi is for most, a once-in-a-lifetime trip. It’s a special place, and it’s important that you have the best experience possible. That’s why booking a Phi Phi Island tour online, and spending a little bit of time to find a trustworthy company; who operate their own boat tour packages is extremely important.
WHICH IS THE BEST PHI PHI ISLAND BOAT TOUR COMPANY?
There are a crazy amount of Phi Phi Island Boat Tours out there, so which one should you choose? And who should you book with?
For starters, I wouldn’t recommend booking any of the cheaper public Phi Phi tours. There are way too many people packed into these boats for it to be enjoyable.
The length of time you’ll get in water will be limited and it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll have a miserable experience of Koh Phi Phi.
I can speak from experience here when I say that Five Star Thailand Tours are a great example of a quality tour company, one that really stood out to me.
Their Semi-Private Phi Phi Island Tour, which they run, has a cap on passenger numbers (a maximum of 8 people), to avoid overcrowding. Or chartering your own private long-tail can offer even more exclusivity and flexibility to your day.
They are a local tour operator and hands-on, on the island. Some tour companies are online-only, some are resellers, but with these guys, while they are accepting reservations online they still maintain travel shops that you can visit in Thailand and meet a real person. They also have incredible and responsive support when booking.
You’ll be sure to have an incredible experience with them! If you’ve travelled thousands of miles around the world to get the islands, it’s more than likely you’ll only do this once. So it’s 100% worth paying a little extra to have a smaller group and a better experience or even having a boat to yourself.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A PHI PHI TOUR
Taking a Phi Phi Island Tour at Sunrise is the best time to get out on the water. It can be tough to set an alarm for 5’oclock in the morning, especially on your holidays.
But why would you want to wake up so early, on a hard-earned vacation! Well, it’s all about beating the crowds, Koh Phi Phi is a tourist magnet, and the later you leave it, the busier the islands get.
Besides, it’s peaceful, quiet and deserted. Sunrise is always the most beautiful time of day, the crimson sun on the horizon makes the islands feel so restful.
And for a brief moment, it is as if there are no other people around as if you are back in the 1980s and Koh Phi Phi is still an untold secret. Most people can only dream of experiencing Koh Phi Phi like this.
There are very few others around at six am and even fewer boat tours. Usually no more than a handful of private charters cruising around this early on.
The sand remains flat from the night before, the water is perfect. Clear, blue and warm. And with the sunlight just appearing, the lighting makes the beach seem even more peaceful than usual.
Koh Phi Phi really does feel like a totally different place, compared to later on in the morning. Almost like something out of… a movie… starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
A Sunrise tour can’t be compared to any other Phi Phi tour package. It’s truly magical at sunrise, so have a slice of this paradise island to yourself, while you still can.
HOW MUCH IS A PHI PHI ISLAND TOUR?
There are a crazy amount of tours available in Koh Phi Phi so I’ll stick with the most popular packages. The price will be higher if you’re staying in Phuket, while those staying on Koh Phi Phi can take advantage of the lower tour prices.
For tours leaving Phuket, you should be paying in the region of 4,000 Baht for a decent quality tour. Or in Koh Phi Phi, that price should be lower at around 1,500 Baht.
You can even find tour packages leaving from Koh Phi Phi for as low as 500 Baht! But bear in mind, you get what you pay for.
Here are a few examples of tours for a rough idea of what a boat tour will cost you.
- Semi-Private Phi Phi Sunrise Supreme / Sunset Supreme. These tours cost on average 1,500THB for each person. With a maximum of eight people on the boat. Coffee and croissants are included in the sunrise. Beers, a chicken baguette meal-deal, and a Thai fried rice is included on the afternoon trip.
- Charter a private longtail boat. The price of a private longtail boat depends on where you leave from. If you are staying in Phuket the cost is 4,950 THB per person. With hotel collection, and speedboat transfers included. If you stay in Ko Phi Phi the cost can be even lower than that!
CAN YOU DO A DAY TRIP TO PHI PHI ISLAND FROM PHUKET?
A day trip from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi is doable, but contrary to popular belief, the island isn’t as close as most people would like to believe.
Koh Phi Phi takes over two hours to reach by ferry, or one hour when travelling by speedboat.
So while day trips from Phuket & Patong are totally possible, it is much better to stay overnight on the island if your schedule allows for it.
The great thing about an overnight stay on Koh Phi Phi is more time to explore the main island of Phi Phi Don, there are some awesome places to check out on the island such as hiking to the viewpoint or watching a fire performance on the beach.
If you’re travelling on a tight schedule and your time in Thailand doesn’t allow for an overnight stay on Koh Phi Phi, there are plenty of speedboat tour packages from Phuket which will show you around the islands hotspots.
There are a couple of other choices when it comes to picking a Phi Phi Tour from Phuket. The most popular choice is a Private Longtail Trip, these tours will typically include return transfers from Phuket in the ticket price. A group speedboat tour is another option, but the prices can be dear, and there tends to be quite a lot of people on these boats.
Or lastly, ferry companies operate tours to Koh Phi Phi from Phuket, where they will arrange for a speedboat to meet the ferry on arrival. So essentially you still get a great speedboat tour of Koh Phi Phi, but by travelling to and from the island by ferry, you get tickets at a fraction of the price!
Andaman Wavemaster is one of the companies who run ferries to the island from Phuket, and bundle in a speedboat tour on arrival. While I’ve heard positive things about them, I can’t speak from experience. If you end up booking such a tour, leave a comment at the bottom and let me know about your experience!
There are plenty of other activities to partake in Phuket! Here are some more awesome things to see and do in Phuket, Thailand .
Tip: if you want to see the Phi Phi Sunrise or Sunset, you’ll have to stay overnight! Boats cannot travel to the island before the Phi Phi Sunrise or later on after sundown!
WHICH BOAT SHOULD I CHOOSE
One of the greatest things about taking a Phi Phi Island Boat Tour is having the chance to ride on an authentic Thai Longtail boat.
If you’re taking a tour from Phi Phi Don Island, you have so many more options. But, keeping it real and opting for a traditional long-tail boat will add so much authenticity to your Phi Phi Island Tour. Speedboats can be ridden (almost) anywhere in the world. Whereas you’ll only find Longtail Boats in the south of Thailand.
These Thai Long Boats were originally used as fishing vessels, and are now more commonly used to take tourists out on snorkelling excursions.
The Thai Longtail Boat has a certain, unexplainable charm – much as riding a Tuk Tuk in Bangkok is many people’s first experience of the Kingdom. Riding a Longtail Boat will get you the most memorable Phi Phi Island Tour .
But here’s the catch, Longtail Boats will only be found leaving the shores on Koh Phi Phi Don. There are no Longtail Boat tours from Phuket, as it would be unsafe and reckless. And above all, a terrifying ride!
When leaving form Phuket, the alternative to the Thai Longtail Boat is a speedboat, while faster, more modern & arguably more comfortable. There just isn’t the same charm of which you’d fell on a Long Boat.
But it’s not all bad news for visitors staying in Phuket. Five Star Thailand Tours, combine the best of both on one of their private tour packages when booking a private longtail boat leaving from the shores of Koh Phi Phi Don they have an option to bundle in return Speedboat transfers, to and from the island. So you don’t have to miss out on this awesome experience!
WHERE DOES A PHI PHI ISLAND BOAT TOUR VISIT
Koh Phi Phi Leh National Park is a short distance away from the main island (Koh Phi Phi Don), it takes around ten minutes to ride across the Andaman to this Island and it is where the best spots to visit are.
The island is home to Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, Phi Phi Lagoon, Loh Samah Bay & Maya Bay Beach.
MONKEY BEACH
Monkey Beach is incredible, the Marquee Monkeys which live here will come on down to the beach to greet your boat (and grab your sandwiches, given a chance)!
These playful creatures roam wild and free on the white beaches and up in the towering limestone cliffs.
The beach is only accessible by boat from Phi Phi Don. With no option of walking, kayaking, driving or swimming! The best bet is to book onto a Phi Phi Boat Tour to get out and meet the Monkeys.
The bay is quite small and it can get pretty busy after mid-morning. So it’s best to head out as early as possible before all the other tours begin to arrive.
You are not allowed to feed the Monkeys, however, sadly, most people do. Feeding the Monkeys essentially domesticates them and causes them to show signs of aggression.
VIKING CAVE
Viking cave is a historic spot at Koh Phi Phi Leh and a must-do on a Phi Phi Boat Trip. Swiftlet Birds live inside the cave and historically the nests of these birds were harvested by sailors, which according to local legends would boost virility.
Nowadays a Phi Phi birds nest soup is a well sought after delicacy, bringing in a decent buck for the few who live in the cave!
The nests are exported to China, where they can fetch up to 10,000USD at market. The idea of a birds nest soup, and especially at the eye-watering prices, surprisingly doesn’t appeal to me. I’ll be sticking with Thai Fried Rice for the time being!
There is a makeshift bamboo structure outside, however, you can only see the cave from afar, as the cave itself is closed off to the public. You can only reach the Viking Cave by boat, so you’ll be able to grab some photographs as you cruise past.
It’s also a fantastic place for snorkelling, with plenty of marine life in the area and beautiful clear blue waters.
Don’t worry about bringing along your own snorkelling equipment. Any reputable boat tour company will provide quality gear for you to use!
PHI PHI LAGOON
Also known as Pilleh Lagoon or the Blue Lagoon amongst many other names. It’s one of the top spots for snorkelling on the island with stunning underwater corals and marine life.
This amazing mind-blowing location is an incredible cove on Phi Phi Leh Island. And by far one of the most stunning destinations to visit. Due to the lagoons close proximity to Maya Bay, both these places can often be seen on one Phi Phi Tour.
It’s a surreal experience, taking a long-tail boat from the shore of Koh Phi Phi Don over to Phi Phi Leh, to snorkel in the clear transparent waters. It takes around twenty minutes to reach Phi Phi Lagoon.
As your boat pulls into the mouth of the cove, you’ll be immersed by limestone cliffs towering all around and the peaceful sounds of waves lapping into the cliffs. You can’t walk to the bay or kayak there, so the only option is to book onto a Phi Phi Excursion which will take you there.
Even for backpackers on a budget, Pileh Lagoon is a must-do in Koh Phi Phi.
Snorkelling in the blue lagoon will blow your mind, it is hands down one of the best things you can do in Thailand. It’s easy to see why this place is such a hot spot with tourists, so if Pilleh Lagoon isn’t on your Thailand bucket list, now is the time to add it!
LOH SAMAH BAY
Loh Samah is a bay to the rear of Ao Maya bay, it’s a top snorkelling destination, and relatively unheard of. But that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked!
It’s one of my favourite places to visit and there is a perfect white sand beach which is exposed at low tide.
The emerald waters are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The best advice is to get here as early in the morning as you can. Before all the other tour boats start tricking in.
Maya Bay Beach in Thailand is arguably the most stunning destination to visit. The beautiful bay was brought to fame by the movie ‘The Beach’. Shot in the late 90’s starring Leonardo DiCaprio, this film brought the beauty of Koh Phi Phi to the public eye for the first time.
Sadly in recent years, the Department of National Parks (DNP) has been forced to close off Maya Bay for restoration. While it’s sad that visitors often show such little respect for the palace. It is great that the authorities have taken action.
The bay will be closed for three years and is set to reopen again in November 2021. Plans have been drawn up for a new pier, which will stop boats from mooring on the beach and tourist numbers will be capped per day.
Visitors to Maya Bay will also need to book a tour in advance online, through a licenced tour operator. There will be much more control and no last-minute bookings once the beach re-opens.
THERE IS MORE TO A PHI PHI TOUR THAN KOH PHI PHI LEH
The beauty of taking a private boat tour is that you have the freedom to visit anywhere you’d like to! So while the aforementioned places are the most beautiful, they also attract the biggest crowds. You’ll find much quieter, secluded beaches on Phi Phi Don.
So if you’ve made it all the way to the end, here are a few more secretive spots that you should definitely be checking out!
- Loh Lana Bay is amazing for snorkelling, it’s rare to see other boats around here.
- Loh Bakao Bay, you have an entry point to the secluded Phi Phi Village (not to be confused with the town) there are a couple of remote bars here.
- Laemtong Beach – There will be a few others around here, but not too many people in comparison to Koh Phi Phi Leh! The sand here is just as white as Maya Bay, and the sea just as blue.
- Hin Klang – For snorkelling its got to be the #1 spot on the island, relatively unheard of, you have a better chance of seeing sharks here than you would at the ‘Shark Point’
- Runtee Beach – If you really want a beach without any other people, this is the one. The sand is not as white as other beaches. But that’s a small sacrifice to have the place to yourself.
- Nui Bay – On the northernmost tip of Phi Phi Don, the remote bay is in my opinion even more beautiful than Maya Bay. Its started to see more and more visitors in recent years, but it’s still worth a visit. You can even walk to this beach from the town! But it’s not an easy hike!
In conclusion, if you are going to be in Phuket, Koh Phi Phi or Krabi. One of the best things you can do is a Private Phi Phi Island Boat Tour.
There is no better way to visit the gorgeous Maya Bay and so many other fantastic snorkelling destinations.
Prices for a Phi Phi Island Boat Tour won’t break the bank, and even on a backpackers budget, a private boat charter can be totally affordable. If you’ve travelled around the world to reach the islands. Don’t cheap out on a miserable tour, booking a semi-private or private tour is the way to go!
In my opinion, this is one of the best activities you can partake in during a stay in the Kingdom, the photo opportunities are incredible and the Phi Phi Boat Tour is something to hold in your memories forever.

We like to think this is the best tour you can take in the Phi Phi Islands. Our first, and original Phi Phi Island Private Boat Tour. Explore Koh Phi Phi on your own charming Thai Longtail Boat. You’ll be paired with one of our expert local guides and there is lots of sightseeing and snorkelling.
This awesome tour has three different packages to choose from! Choose between sunrise, sunset or daytime. Our sunset tour is the most popular, and it’s also one of the least busy times, after other boats have returned back to the mainland.
Koh Phi Phi is made up of two main islands; Koh Phi Phi Don, and Koh Phi Phi Leh. All of the places you’ve heard about are on these two islands. That includes spots like; Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah Beach and Maya Bay along with lots of other beaches, bays, and lagoons.
This tour does not follow a fixed route or a fixed schedule. Koh Phi Phi is dynamic and so are we. Trust our local knowlage, as our expert guides take into consideration the anticipated weather, tides, crowds, and park restrictions in order to plan the best route for that day. We try to fit in as much as possible, without rushing. And guests can personalise the tour route aswell. Spend more time snorkeling, or more time in a place you love. It’s up to you. It’s a private tour.
Glowing Plankton : Our sunset package can be extended into the early evening. We can’t guarantee you’ll see the plankton – as we can’t control nature. But we will do our best to spot it, and we’re usually successful. If you’re lucky you’ll see the ocean shine and shimmer with any movement through the water.
Bamboo Island : We advise guests not to include Bamboo Island on this tour because it is far from the other Phi Phi Islands. We want to ensure a relaxed pace on our tour, so including Bamboo Island would mean less time to spend at other locations. However, if visiting Bamboo Island is important to you, it can be added as an additional stop. ✋ Bamboo is located in open waters and it’s sometimes unsafe to visit– we cannot guarantee a visit.
If you pay extra for collection from a hotel or resort on the Northern Peninsula, you will be closer to Bamboo Island and there will be a stop there, if the weather allows. This only applies to guests starting our Phi Phi tour from: Zeavola Resort , P.P Erawan Resort , PP Holiday Resort , PP Natural Resort
Approximate Tour Duration For Phi Phi Island [Package A]
🌅 Sunrise Package: Approx. 6 Hours
😎 Daytime Package: Approx. 6 Hours
🌄 Sunset Package: Approx. 6 Hours
➕ Sunset Package + Plankton: Approx. 6.5 Hours
➕ Sunset Package + Bamboo + Plankton: Approx. 7.5 Hours
➕ Any Package + Bamboo: Approx. 7 Hours

The default duration is six hours, which we’ve determined to be the best amount of time for the Phi Phi Island Tour. However, you can extend it for additional stops. We’ll confirm the exact start and finish times with you the day before the tour, as they may vary slightly depending on sunrise and sunset times throughout the year.
Phi Phi Island is all about nature, the wildlife, the beaches, the ocean, the Monkeys, the Reef-Sharks, the snorkelling! There is plenty to do and see on our tour. Snorkelling is included as standard, and equipment provided. There will be lots of time to explore the bays and beaches dotted around Koh Phi Phi.
It is common to see Black Tip Reef Sharks in Phi Phi, it is common to see Monkeys. It is possible to see Hawksbill turtles. But do note that we can’t control the animals or nature and we can’t guarantee you’ll see anything. Reef Sharks are not dangerous to humans.
At Phi Phi, we don’t have the same restrictions as tours from Phuket or Krabi . When you start your tour from Phi Phi Island, you can choose a sunrise tour or a sunset tour. It’s often more peaceful at these times. We do try to avoid crowds as much as possible, but we’d never promise it. It’s something out of our control and at popular locations like Maya Bay it is usually unavoidable.
Breakfast : Our sunrise tour package includes hot coffee in the early morning.
Lunch : This tour includes lunch, we’ve picked a set of popular, and easily recognizable Thai meals for guests to choose from. Our lunch menu includes hand-picked classic meals like Phad Thai, Thai Fried Rice, and a selection of southern Thai curries. The meals are not spicy unless you request otherwise. Each meal is bursting with authentic flavours of Thailand. We stop off at a local restaurant to eat lunch, although depending on the exact package it can sometimes be more of a brunch or a late lunch! We are able to cater to Vegetarian, Vegan and Halal requests.
Water : Clean drinking water is made available throughout the tour.

Our guide sunny was well informed, funny and thoughtful guy. He told us interesting stories and kept the whole group entertained with his information as well as on boat conversations. Note that you’d have to pay the national forest fees upon arrival, it’s a compulsory thing besides the ticket unless you get a package that includes them. Phi Phi Island Travel Guide For Thailand
Koh Phi Phi island is a beautiful spot in Thailand with limestone hills, turquoise lagoons, and the world famous beach at Maya Bay.
There are two main islands — Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don — and both have amazing scenery. Leh island is completely uninhabited, while Don island has hotels, restaurants, and more.
It’s easy to visit the Phi Phi islands on a day trip (by boat) from Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, or Koh Lanta, and that gives you enough time to see Maya Bay and the other main sights, or you can stay a few days on Phi Phi Don and do even more exploring.
This Phi Phi travel guide will explain how to get there from Phuket or Krabi (or elsewhere), which things to see and do, best tour packages to use, where to stay in PP island, and everything else you need to know before you go!
Phi Phi Island Thailand Day Tour Packages
First of all, if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the extra steps involved in arranging your own trip to Phi Phi island, GetYourGuide has prearranged day trips to Phi Phi from Phuket or similar day trips from Krabi or Khao Lak , complete with hotel transfers, boat tickets, island tour, lunch, and same day return.
These day tours visit all of the top sights in the Koh Phi Phi islands, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and Monkey Bay. They also have private tours or semi-private tours if you prefer that instead of a shared tour, although the prices are a bit higher unless you bring friends.
We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where Is Phi Phi Island?
The Phi Phi islands (pronounced ‘Pee-Pee’) are located in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Phuket, and about the same distance from Krabi.
There are six islands in total, with the two main islands being Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don, and they’re all considered part of the Krabi province of Thailand.
The only inhabited island is Phi Phi Don, which has hotels, restaurants, and everything else you might want for a short stay.

How To Get To Phi Phi Island
The only way to reach the Phi Phi islands is by boat from Phuket or Krabi, and you can use either a ferry or a speedboat to get there.
There’s no airport in Koh Phi Phi, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.
There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to Phi Phi daily from either Phuket or Krabi, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. You can also do the day trip from Koh Lanta, or as far away as Khao Lak Thailand.
Drone pic of Phi Phi Leh island
The slow ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don takes about 2 hours, while the fast ferry (speedboat) takes half as long. If you’re starting from Krabi instead of Phuket, the boat travel times to Phi Phi are about 30 minutes shorter.
Keep in mind these are just transfers to the main island of Phi Phi Don. Once you arrive, you’ll need to arrange a longtail boat trip if you want to go touring Phi Phi Leh and the rest of the islands. You can arrange this on the spot at Ton Sai Beach in Phi Phi Don, and it’s usually pretty easy.
The other option is booking a day tour to Phi Phi by speedboat with a Phuket or Krabi-based tour company. There are shared or private tours, and they visit most of the main sights in one full day. This can be a great option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Phi Phi Island – Tourist Fees
There are two tourist fees you have to pay when you arrive in the Phi Phi islands.
At Phi Phi Don island, there’s a cash fee of 20 baht per person, which is paid when you first land at the harbor. They collect this from everyone, and it helps pay for daily rubbish removal from the islands. This fee is one time only (not a daily fee).
At the national park areas, there’s a cash fee of 200 baht per person (~$6 USD), which is collected when you disembark at either Maya Bay or Bamboo Island (Koh Phai). This fee is charged every day you visit either of these two locations.
Some Phi Phi tours may already include these fees in the price, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you get off the boat.

Transport: How To Get Around The Phi Phi Islands
There are no cars or motorbike rentals in the Phi Phi islands, and they’re not needed at all — if you’re staying on Phi Phi Don island, the whole town is small enough to be easily walkable on foot. Bicycles can also be rented.
You can hire a longtail boat in Phi Phi Don to take you to nearby islands like Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island. This can be booked online or else you can charter it in person at the Tonsai harbor after you arrive on Phi Phi Don.
The longtails are smaller boats, but they have room for up to 8 passengers, so you can share a boat with friends or other travelers to make it more cost effective.
Another option is kayaking at Ko Phi Phi Don. This is cheaper than a boat rental, and you can use kayaks to reach some of the hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don, like Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.

Best Things To Do In Phi Phi Island Thailand
The white sand beach at Maya Bay is one of the most famous and photogenic places in Thailand, and it was the main thing responsible for bringing tourism to the Koh Phi Phi islands. In fact, it’s now one of the most famous beaches in the world!
The entire beach is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. The water is clear turquoise with baby sharks swimming around, and the sand is white as snow. Everything about it looks perfect. Yep, this is paradise!
Of course, the beauty of Maya Bay has attracted the tourist hordes, just like any of the amazing places in the world, but if you time your visit right you can still enjoy the beach without too many people.
Maya Bay — one of the highlights of Phi Phi Island Thailand
Maya Bay is located on Phi Phi Leh island, where it’s accessed by landing a boat at Loh Samay Bay (on the back side of the island), and then doing a short and easy shaded walk through the jungle to get to the beach. The walk is flat and takes about 5 minutes.
In the past, boats could go inside of Maya Bay and land directly on the beach, but they don’t do that anymore. The Thai government has spent the last several years working on conservation, so the only way to get to the beach now is to walk to it from the back side of the island.
I think this change was a good idea because it keeps the bay clear of boats, although I do miss those perfect postcard photos of Thai longtail boats sitting on the beach at Maya Bay.
Maya Bay from above
Another thing you should know is that Maya Bay is frequently closed for conservation at least a couple months every year during the rainy season.
In 2022 and 2023, Maya Bay was closed to tourists for 2 months (August and September) during the low season, but it re-opened for business on October 1, 2023. The bay is now open for visitors again in 2024!
Welcome to Maya Bay! This is the sign that greets you.
Maya Bay has a small shop with snacks and drinks, and there are restrooms by the path when you first disembark at Loh Sama Bay.
The main beach is about 250 meters long, and the end of the beach has a shallow cave that’s nice for photos.
If you want to escape the crowds, there are usually less people at the far end of the beach.
The shallow cave at Maya Bay
Most Koh Phi Phi tour packages give you 1 hour at Maya Bay, which is plenty of time to explore the beach, take pictures from every angle, and dip your feet in the water (swimming isn’t allowed at Maya Bay anymore).
I have to say the beach has been kept very clean, and we didn’t notice hardly any trash, even though as many as 5,000 tourists come to this beach sometimes in a single day! The park rangers have done a good job with cleanup.
Overall, Maya Bay is an amazing experience, and it’s one of our favorite beaches in the world!

Beach time!
• Pileh Lagoon
This surreal turquoise lagoon surrounded by giant rock walls is one of the best things to see on Phi Phi island in Thailand.
The lagoon is only accessible by boat. Most Koh Phi Phi tours include a stop here, and the smaller boats can float into the lagoon and circle it, giving you up-close views of the impressive limestone karsts.
It’s more amazing than it looks in photos, and we may have enjoyed this spot even more than Maya Bay!
One of our favorite spots in the Phi Phi islands

• Phi Phi Viewpoint
The Phi Phi viewpoint is a short hike on the island of Phi Phi Don, with epic views of the town and most of the island, and Phi Phi Leh visible in the distance.
There are actually three different viewpoints at various levels on the hill, but viewpoints #2 and #3 are the ones you really want to see because they’re higher and have the best views of the island without being blocked by any trees.
Epic views of Phi Phi island from viewpoint #2
Phi Phi viewpoint #2 has broad panoramic views of the island and the entire town, with a nice wooden platform and some flat rocks where you can take photos. This was probably our favorite spot.
Viewpoint #3 has even higher views because it’s located at the top of the hill and you’re basically sitting in a tree house, with picnic tables and a hammock.
It’s very quiet and I’m sure it would be a great spot for sunset.
Phi Phi viewpoint #2 can be reached in about 20 minutes of uphill walking (mostly on stairs) if you start from the town center of Phi Phi Don island, and then it’s another 10-15 minutes to walk from there to viewpoint #3.
There’s a small fee to get into viewpoints #1 and #2, and then another small fee if you go to viewpoint #3. In total, we paid 50 baht per person (~$1.50). All of the viewpoints are very worthwhile!
You can see the whole town from the Phi Phi viewpoint
• Bamboo Island (Koh Phai)
This is a small flat island located northeast of Phi Phi Don, with less people and a nice sandy beach covering most of the island.
Lots of Phi Phi island tours include this place in the itinerary, but it never feels too crowded, and if you walk around the side of the island for awhile you may have it all to yourself.
Bamboo Island (Koh Phai)
Just like Maya Bay, Bamboo Island is considered part of the Koh Phi Phi national park, so you have to pay the park entrance fee to land on the island and walk around the beach.
The center of the island has some trees, including the bamboo shoots that give the island its name, so you can escape the sun for awhile when you’re not in the water.
Overall, Bamboo Island is a great place to swim and soak up sun without the crowds of Maya Bay!
Bamboo Island is easy to reach by boat from the main Phi Phi islands
The perfect place to swim!
• Monkey Bay
This is a fun little beach where you can see wild monkeys on Phi Phi Don island. There are dozens of monkeys (long-tailed macaques) living on the beach, and you can usually see baby monkeys too.
The monkeys are fun for pictures, but they can be aggressive if they’re provoked, so don’t try to tease them or take their food. They’ve also been known to steal people’s glasses and other small items, so keep a close eye on them!
It’s best to go to this beach at low tide, when more monkeys come down to the beach. At high tide, the beach is mostly underwater and the monkeys retreat to the rocks, where they can’t be seen as well.
• Monkey Beach
Not to be confused with Monkey Bay, this is a different spot on the other side of Phi Phi Don island. This one also has monkeys, but they’re not seen as often, and it’s a bigger beach with more room to walk around.
The main reason to come to Monkey Beach is for the stunning scenery. It’s a really nice beach with soft sand and a backdrop of jungle covered limestone mountains.
This is one of the most beautiful spots in Koh Phi Phi Thailand, and you can reach it by boat or kayak from Loh Dalum Beach. Just remember to keep an eye on the monkeys, because they can be sneaky.
Monkey Beach
This is a small hidden bay on Phi Phi Don island with a nice beach and towering limestone rocks.
It’s possible to reach Nui Bay by sea or by land. From Loh Dalum Beach, you can rent a kayak or a boat to go there, which is how people usually get there. Kayaking to the bay will take about 45 minutes with a leisurely pace.
Otherwise, it’s also possible to reach Nui Bay by hiking from the Phi Phi viewpoint. It takes about 1 hour, and you’ll want to bring plenty of water and mosquito spray just in case.
If you get to Nui Bay in the morning (around 8 AM), it’s quiet and you may have it all to yourself for awhile until the tour boats start arriving later in the morning!
Phi Phi Island Map
Here’s a Phi Phi island map you can use to plan your trip. You can click the icons to get more info on each point of interest, but keep in mind some of the locations on this map may be approximate.
For more detailed information about some of the spots on this Koh Phi Phi map, you can check out my individual travel guides for each location.
Best Beaches In Phi Phi Thailand
There are a lot of beaches in the Phi Phi islands, but obviously the hands down winner for scenery is the one at Maya Bay.
Some other beaches with great sand and swimming are the ones at Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, and Nui Bay. You can watch the sunset at Long Beach .
If you want a quiet beach with nearby hotels on Phi Phi Don, some great options are Long Beach , Loh Moo Dee Beach , and Loh Ba Kao Bay . All of these have nice white sand and hotels near the beach. The best one for sunsets is Long Beach.

What To Bring
Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Koh Phi Phi Island Thailand.
Most of the items below can probably be found on Phi Phi Don in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).
It’s best to buy vetted products online!
- Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around PP island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
- Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
- Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Koh Phi Phi island. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to stay on the island or do multiple tours then it’s better to bring your own gear.
- Water Shoes: These can come in handy sometimes while snorkeling in case you need to walk on rocks to get out of the water.
- Sunscreen: There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
- Snacks & Drinks: You’ll want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi, or there are plenty of cheap snack and drink stands in Ko Phi Phi Don near the port.
Drones can get some great photos in the Koh Phi Phi islands
Can You Fly A Drone At The Phi Phi Islands?
Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but they don’t allow you to fly them in the national parks.
That includes Ko Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island, which are patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict at Maya Bay, and the rangers there are watching all areas of the beach constantly.
However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations. For example, you can park your boat at Pileh Lagoon or Viking Cave and launch the drone from there, and usually no one is likely to notice or care unless a park ranger boat happens to drive by and see you do it.
The drone restrictions don’t apply to Phi Phi Don island at all. You can fly drones anywhere on Phi Phi Don without a problem, although you’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phi Phi Island Thailand
- Credit Cards: Some places accept cards, but many do not. Most restaurants are cash only, although a few higher end restaurants accept cards. Use your card for big things like hotels and tours, and save your cash for smaller things like the amazing Thai street food.
- ATM: On Phi Phi Don island, there are ATMs all over town. We used Krungsri in several locations and never had any issues. The pull fee was like 220 baht and they let you withdraw large amounts of cash at a time.
- Cell Service: Phone reception is strong on Phi Phi Don, but you may lose signal while touring around Phi Phi Leh island (including Maya Bay) because of the steep mountains that cover the island.
- WiFi: The internet situation is improving, and a fair number of hotels and restaurants in Phi Phi Don have good WiFi now. The internet quality is not as good as Phuket, but it’s generally good enough for emails, browsing, and streaming.
- Electricity: The power is almost always on. During the rainy season we lost power a few times after storms, but it came back quickly.
- Convenience Stores: There are plenty of small mini marts on Phi Phi Don where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Just remember their selection is smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Phuket.
- Hygiene: We ate tons of the cheapest Thai street food and never had any stomach issues, but remember not to drink the tap water. Only use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
- Language: Just like in Phuket, the locals in the Koh Phi Phi islands don’t speak a lot of English, but it’s easy enough to communicate about hotels, restaurants, tours, etc.
- Religion: Most of the locals in Phi Phi Don are Muslim (more than 80 percent). One of the funny side effects of this is that there are lots of cats on the island, but no dogs. We enjoyed the cats. There’s only one mosque on Phi Phi island, and it’s not noisy, so you won’t be kept awake at night.
- Mosquitoes: We didn’t see any mosquitoes in the Ko Phi Phi islands except for a few at Monkey Bay. There have been some cases of Dengue Fever here, but it’s not really something to stress about. You can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or Phi Phi Don if you need it. Malaria isn’t present here.
King of the hill
Best Restaurants In Phi Phi Don
Even though Phi Phi Don is a small island, there are lots of great restaurants to choose from, with different kinds of cuisine including Thai, European, and Asian food.
Here are just a few of our top restaurant recommendations:
- ACQUA : This is probably the single nicest restaurant in Phi Phi Don, although it’s a little on the pricey side. They have a good range of Thai and European dishes, with indoor and outdoor seating.
- Mango Garden : This air-conditioned cafe is one of the first places we ate in Phi Phi island. They have a whole menu dedicated to mango sticky rice. Great for breakfast or a snack while waiting for the ferry! They also have free WiFi and plenty of power outlets.
- JaJa Cafe & Spice : Awesome pancakes and acai fruit smoothie bowls!
- Anna’s Restaurant : European and Thai food in PP island with a good selection and reasonable prices. Try the pineapple fried rice.
- 23° Roasters Cafe : A relatively new cafe with great cakes and pastries. Indoor seating and super fast WiFi.
- Papaya Restaurant : Indian and Thai food outside of the main street on PP island.
- Garlic 1992 : Good Thai food in a humble setting. As you can tell by the name, they’ve been in business since 1992.
Phi Phi island has lots of great restaurants now (© ACQUA)
Again, this is far from a complete list of every good restaurant in Phi Phi Don island. With a bit of exploring, you’re sure to find some other gems.
Don’t forget about the yum Thai street food stalls and small family owned restaurants, such as Only Noodles . These places are super cheap and the food is usually amazing. In fact, we ate at these places for almost all of our meals in Phi Phi island!
Last, but not least, if you’re craving western food then there’s even a McDonald’s and Burger King when you first step off the boat at Ton Sai beach.
Is Koh Phi Phi Safe?
Yes, Phi Phi island in Thailand is generally a very safe place to stay.
We’ve spent weeks staying in Phi Phi Don and exploring the whole town, and never felt unsafe. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues with crime.
If anything, we actually found the locals more friendly in Phi Phi than in Phuket or Krabi.

Best Time To Visit Phi Phi
The best time to visit the Phi Phi islands in Thailand depends on what you’re looking for.
The weather in the Andaman Sea of Thailand (including Phi Phi) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny, and the sea conditions are better for boat tours. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s more crowded and hotels in Phi Phi Don are more likely to be fully booked.
The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip if your time is a bit more flexible.
If you visit Phi Phi in the rainy season, it’s good to have a few extra days to spare in case there’s some junky weather leading to the boats being canceled for a day or two.

Are The Phi Phi Islands Worth It?
Yes, the Phi Phi islands are absolutely worth a visit! The scenery is amazing and the prices for everything are very affordable.
I’d say it’s the single best place to go in Thailand, and also one of the best places in Southeast Asia. Sure, the crowds are annoying, but sights like Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon have very few equals on Earth.
Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?
So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island ? That’s an important question.
They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island , but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.
There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.
Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (south vs north), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

How Long To Stay
You can see the highlights of the Koh Phi Phi islands in one full day tour, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, and more. This is true even if you’re starting from Phuket or Krabi, as opposed to staying on Phi Phi Don.
However, staying a few days in the Phi Phi islands will give you more time to enjoy the scenery and see some extra things like the Phi Phi viewpoint, or the many hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don. It also gives you a buffer in case of junky weather.
We really enjoyed all of our days spent in Koh Phi Phi, and if you have enough time to spare then I think staying a few days is better than doing a one day trip from Phuket or Krabi.

3-Day Itinerary For Phi Phi Island Thailand
Here’s what a sample itinerary for the Phi Phi islands could look like, assuming you spend 3 days staying on Phi Phi Don and touring all of the islands:
- Day 1: Phi Phi Don . Arrive in the Phi Phi islands from Phuket or Krabi. Check in to your hotel and unpack your things. Hike to the Phi Phi viewpoint and enjoy the scenery for awhile, and then head over to Loh Dalum Beach, where you can take a boat or kayak to Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.
- Day 2: Phi Phi Leh . Take a longtail boat over to Phi Phi Leh island. Tour the famous beach at Maya Bay, and then go see Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave. If you have time, stop and visit Monkey Bay on your way back to town.
- Day 3: Misc . Take a boat to Bamboo Island and spend a couple hours swimming and soaking up sun. Head back to Phi Phi Don and explore the town and miscellaneous beaches before going back to Phuket or Krabi.
I hope this sample itinerary gives you some ideas for your own trip to Phi Phi island! As always, feel free to ask any questions if you have them.

Hi there, Just wondering which area in Phuket is closest to stay to catch a private transfer to Phi Phi Islands and has luxury hotels or houses to stay fir a week with family.
Hi there. It depends what you’re hoping to do in the Phi Phi islands. If you’re mainly wanting a private boat trip where you can avoid the worst crowds at Maya Bay etc, I would actually recommend staying a couple nights in Phi Phi Don if possible, and then hiring a boat from there. It’s easy to charter a boat in Phi Phi, and this will allow you to get an early start for sightseeing all around the islands before the crowds of day trippers come from Phuket. Phi Phi has luxury hotels too like Saii and Zeavola Resort . Otherwise, if you’re just wanting to do a day trip to Phi Phi and a convenient area to stay in Phuket nearby, then anywhere in south Phuket would work for that. Two good options in the southern part of the island are Sinae Phuket or Royal Phuket City Hotel .

If you're still in the planning stages of your trip, why not consider spending a couple of nights on Phi Phi which would then allow you to visit both & more, without being rushed?
If you do opt for a day trip, make sure you book a tour that leaves early in the morning so that you can avoid the crowds. For example, Simba's Phi Phi Sunrise tour. A terrific day out. Small group. Safety & comfort being the priority. The reviews speak for themselves. https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/AttractionProductReview-g676354-d14782135-Luxury_Small_Group_Phi_Phi_Sunrise_from_Phuket_by_Simba_Sea_Trips-Ko_Yao_Yai_Phang.html
Bamboo Island is bigger, much less developed, and is less crowded, but can still be busy. No beach chairs, not so much shade. There is a shop, I suppose it sells beer too. There is some of the best snorkeling on the north west corner, but it is some way from the beach. This island is only about 10 minutes from Phi Phi Don.
I agree that it is a good idea to leave early to beat the crowds, we find leaving Phuket about 8am is early enough. It would be very difficult to completely avoid other visitors at Maya Bay as the main Phi Phi island is only a few minutes away from Maya, and people staying on Phi Phi can get there very early.
Also, if you are booking one of the cheaper tours, you can probably get a better price by waiting until you are here, and barter a price at one of the many tour booths, You can often get a tour for about half the brochure price. Be aware however that the cheaper the tour, the more people are likely to be aboard, you will likely be charged extra for fins or whatever and the standard of service will be lower. Premium tours should be booked in advance on line, and likely won't offer a discount, but everything should be included, and fewer people aboard..
I hope this helps.
