Latest reviews of Day Trips: Volcano Tours from Oahu
Not worth the trip when there's no lava.
Flying one hour to a volcano that isn't active isn't worth the effort, time or money. We also saw 2 waterfalls, a lava tunnel, a lava field and Hilo, the town with the airport and closest to the volcano park. But again a ... more ll not worth the time, effort and money to go. Our guide, Dexter was good but he can't make up for the missing attractions.
This was a great tour!
We went to a black sand beach, bakery ( try the malasadas they're amazing), craters, lava field, lava tube, and steam vents. We didn't get to try their lunch because someone in the group was car sick(hard to eat when ... more someone is vomiting right in front of you) For the helicopter ride we went down the coastline instead of over the volcanoes due to weather around there. The pilot was amazing! He was very knowledgeable, funny, and friendly. This tour would have been a lot better if it wasn't raining (rains there a lot so bring a raincoat just incase) and we didn't have someone who got carsick. That wasn't the tours fault and I definitely would do this tour again.
This experience was amazing our tour guide Dexter was great explaining everything very well accomodating everyone’s needs would highly recommend this tour.
If not for the rain
Our quide, Dexter was excellent. He was very thoughtful and professional. He made an otherwise rainy, gloomy day a fun day. The tour gave us a great overview.
Big Island Tour
Perfectly organised day, from communication prior to the day to everyone involved in sny part of the tour. The guide was great, hugely knowledgeable and interesting. The helicopter trip was perhaps the most incredible ... more thing I have ever done. The ground crew were superb and the pilot made it the best trip ever. After waiting 30 years to do this tour it didn't disappoint. Could not recommend it highly enough.
Good tour, but you can't schedule nature
The timings and organisation of the tour were good. We were picked up from the airport and taken to see the Volcano National Park sites with a good guide who kept us informed and was accommodating of our needs. Unfortuna ... more tely you can't schedule nature and we didn't see any volcanic activity apart from a little steam, but it was still interesting, especially the lava tube. We had a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters to finish off with, but I will not review that part, I will review their admin however. We really wanted a copy of the video of our flight as it was for a 50th birthday, but due to a technical difficulty could not get it at the time. We were told to just drop them a line, but after several emails and calls, still nothing - very disappointed in them.

Best Sights to See on an Oahu Volcano Tour
by PilotA | Jan 8, 2024 | Oahu
Oahu draws millions of visitors to its white sandy beaches every year, but this stunning island boasts more natural wonders than just sandy stretches. Volcanic landscapes litter the land, detailing the island’s geological story while showcasing its rugged beauty. If you want to see Oahu’s volcanic peaks, craters, crags, and cones, you should book an Oahu volcano tour by helicopter.
At Honolulu Helicopter Tours , we specialize in providing in-depth helicopter tours over Oahu that give you a glimpse of all this island’s enchanting highlights, from the North Shore Beaches to the Diamond Head Volcanic Cone on the island’s south coast. Call us today to find out how our helicopter tours take sightseeing to the next level. Below, we shed light on some of the most awe-inspiring sites you’ll soar over an on Oahu volcano tour.
Oahu Volcano Tour: Most Notable Sights
From the iconic Diamond Head Crater to the winding valleys of the Waianae Range, here are some of the most spectacular sights to look out for on your Oahu volcano tour.
Diamond Head Crater
Located by the coast right next to Honolulu, the Diamond Head Crater is one of the most famous natural phenomena on the island of Oahu. While hiking to the summit of this extinct volcanic cone is a popular activity with those in search of panoramic views of Honolulu and the Pacific, a helicopter tour offers an unparalleled aerial perspective.
Koko Crater
Located on the southeastern tip of Oahu, the Koko Crater is a distinctive tuff cone that showcases nature’s architectural prowess. The climb to the summit may be steep, but it rewards you with breathtaking views over the surrounding area. If you’d rather rest your legs while taking in even more expansive views, an Oahu volcano tour by helicopter is the perfect alternative.
Hanauma Bay
While best known as a hotspot for snorkeling, Hanauma Bay’s origins make it appeal to those who are interested in Hawaii’s volcanic landscapes. The bay itself is a volcanic crater that has been eroded by the ocean, resulting in a beautiful bay for a diverse array of marine life.
Makapu’u Point Lighthouse
Perched on top of a volcanic headland, the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse is one of Oahu’s best vantage points for unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. During a flight over this famous landmark, you can soak up the surrounds of rugged cliffs where the sea meets the land.
Waianae Range
As you fly over the Waianae Range, you can observe deep valleys, dramatic cliffs, and unique geological formations that have shaped the landscape over millions of years due to volcanic activity.

I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to get up close and personal with Lava! I have to say it was one of the best tours I have EVER done!
We had a fantastic guide Matthew guiding our group. He had us up early hiking out over the lava flows to the most active parts, and we were lucky to have a major flow erupt right by us while we were exploring.
To put it succinctly: the guides (Jon and Jeff) are THE people you want escorting you through the volcanoes. Jon’s energy is contagious, and Jeff’s stories are–literally–legendary. More than just a tour of the area, you get a tour through time, with personal stories that help color the experience. I would recommend these guys to anyone who has a real interest in experiencing the history, not just looking at the land. Thanks, guys!
Epic Lava has most experienced and friendly guides. They shared many stories of their experiences and they even helped us take amazing photos.

Frequently Asked Questions
Read our answers to our customers’ common questions.
Everyone who visits Hawaii Volcanoes National Park wants to see lava. You go there hoping to see lava fountaining into the air like on a National Geographic magazine.
Sorry to tell you, most visitors do not see lava.
Here’s why: Lava is dangerous. As soon as lava is fountaining or flowing in a certain area, Hawaii Civil Defense determines if it is safe to allow people near it. Usually it is not safe and the area is closed off.
How to see lava on a volcano tour
The best way to be sure you will see lava is to take a helicopter volcano tour. You will see it from hundreds of feet away, but it is still magnificent.
The chances of seeing lava from a helicopter are very high, but not guaranteed. Volcanoes are extremely unpredictable. Volcanic activity changes every day. The lava flow moves and the surface cools.
Do not make the mistake of going on a volcano tour to see lava. There are so many other reasons to go on a volcano tour. Our volcanoes have an amazing history, cultural significance, biological uniqueness, geological wonder, and a beauty like no other place in the world.
People who go just to see lava and don’t see it are disappointed. People who go to appreciate everything else about the volcano enjoy themselves. If you do see lava on a volcano tour, it is a bonus and you are a lucky one.
You want a quick answer? Sorry, the answer is constantly changing.
As we mention all over this site, the volcano is active. That means that it is moving and hard to pin down. You might see photos from a friend who saw lava flowing into the ocean a month ago, but now it is nowhere to be seen.
This is why a volcano tour is the best way to view the volcanoes. Tours will take you to see the sights in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Then the guide will use his contacts to find where you have the best chance of seeing lava.
Sometimes it is best viewed from inside the National Park. Sometimes it is by the shore in Kalapana. Sometimes it can only be seen from helicopters. Some days you can’t see lava anywhere you look.
The key to an enjoyable visit to the Big Island volcanoes is to go for the volcanoes and consider any sighting of lava as a bonus. If you’re whole purpose is to see lava, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.
If you insist that lava is your focus, then a helicopter tour has the best chance of seeing lava. The pilots search for lava and communicate where the sighting is the best. When you get close, you can actually feel the heat from inside the helicopter.
Five different Volcanoes are on the Big Island of Hawaii:
- Kilauea volcano
Mauna Kea Volcano Summit. 13,796 ft. Photo https://flic.kr/p/4h5JWS
Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in Hawaii. It is also the tallest sea mountain in the world. From it’s base at the bottom of the ocean floor it is 33,000 feet taller than Mount Everest. Mauna Kea hasn’t erupted for thousands of years, but is still considered dormant and could erupt again.
Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth in terms of volume.
Kilauea is the volcano that most visit us to see. It is the most active volcano in the world. It began erupting in 1983 and continues to erupt today.
Vog is volcanic fog. It is similar to smog in that it is dirty with particles that are not in typical fog.
Vog is formed when gases from the erupting volcano get into the air, mix with sunlight, oxygen and moisture.
Like smog, vog is not healthy for humans, plants or animals. Many people living near Kilaeau, experience headaches and respitory issues from vog.
Visitors on our tours will see and breath vog, but we rarely have visitors who complain of health issues as a result. Generally, complaints come more often from prolonged exposure by those living near the volcano.
Nevertheless, we encourage all visitors to pay attention to their bodies and take the following precautions:
- Drink lots of fluids
- Don’t overexert
- Don’t smoke
Does vog smell like sulfer? A little bit.

5. Self-Guided Big Island Volcano Tour from Oahu – with Shaka Guide
Check Rates & Download the Shaka Guide app and tour here: 🌋 Volcanoes National Park Shaka Guide Tour 🌋
You can always DIY a Big Island volcano tour from Oahu as well. This gives you the flexibility of spending as much (or as little) time as you want at each site.
First, book a flight and car rental from Honolulu to Hilo.
Hilo is only about 30mins from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park compared to Kona which is 2.5hrs away. For maximum island time take the first flight out to Hilo and the last flight back to Honolulu.
You won’t be offroading so you can get rent a regular car vs a 4×4 . Get the car size that best suits your needs.
If the timing is right, I highly recommend stopping in Mountain View for breakfast (or second breakfast?) before entering the park.
I love the deliciously squishy mochi donuts from Mt View Bakery . They have rotating flavors so you’ll never know what to expect. Grab one or two per person then take them next door for what I consider to be the best served coffee on the island .
Koana serves “slow coffee”. Brian only serves pourover Big Island coffee which he roasts himself.
Get a full experience by smelling the bean varieties and watch as he meticulously and skillfully pours hot water over the freshly ground beans. This silky, fresh cup of coffee will undoubtedly blow your mind!
He also serves his own drinking chocolate concoction!
Enjoy your donuts and caffeine in the little garden before getting back on the road for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance.
Entry fee for the park is $30 per vehicle.
While you can drive through the park sans guide, I highly suggest downloading the Shaka Guide’s audio guide Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Tour . I love the quirky voice that narrates sites as you drive along throughout the park with Hawaiian musical interludes. It will be like having an actual guided tour in your own car.
The main highlights you’ll want to hit are the Steam Vents , Uekahuna Overlook , Kilauea Iki Crater Lookout , and Thurston Lava Tube .
To see the active lava you’ll hike Crater Rim Trail from the Devastation Trail parking lot. The 1 mile hike is on a paved path until you divert to the right down a short gravel path to the viewing point. There you will get to see actual lava coming out of the caldera (if it’s “turned on”).
Keeping track of time, take Chain of Craters Road all the way to the end, passing many craters you can stop at (including Devil’s Throat which is not marked on the map), a petroglyph field (a must hike if you have the time), and finally to the water’s edge to glimpse Holelei Sea Arch .
For a fancy lunch, I would make reservations at the Volcano House restaurant , with panoramic views looking into the steaming crater. Out of the park in Volcano Village are other options like Tuk-Tuk Thai Food Truck or Kilauea Lodge Restaurant .
The beauty of having your own car is being able to tour at your own pace. You might have time for other stops before your flight back to Oahu, like a wine tasting at Volcano Winery , a peak at Rainbow Falls , a climb through Kaumana Caves , or shopping in historic Hilo .
See? That wasn’t so hard to do a self-guided day trip from Honolulu to Volcanoes National Park, was it?
Know Before You Go
If you are flying over from Oahu to the Big Island just for the day you are not going to be able to see the lava glowing and flowing in the dark; flight times are not going to accommodate that. Your only way of seeing lava in the dark is if you take a self-guided tour and stay the night on the Big Island.
Also, the Big Island guided volcano tours from Oahu do not include the 2-mile roundtrip hike to see the lava flow from the Crater Rim Road overlook. You will be able to see smoke fluming out of the caldera from the Uekahuna overlook, but no lava flow.
If you take a helicopter tour you will fly over the caldera and also see the lava from above if it’s flowing.
Check current lava conditions here .
How to get from Oahu to the Big Island for a Volcano Tour?
The only way to get from Oahu to the Big Island for a volcano tour is to fly over. Oahu is 200 miles from the Big Island with lots of water in between. If you’re an avid swimmer, maaaayybbbee you could breaststroke your way across 😛
Otherwise, it’s a quick 45min flight from Honolulu to Kona or Hilo. Hawaiian Airlines or Southwest fly direct from Oahu to the Big Island.
You’ll likely be taking the first flight of the morning to the Big Island and the last flight out (which isn’t very late). The trip will be a whirlwind, but if this is your only opportunity to come see the volcano then it’s the price that you’ll have to pay.

What To Bring on A Big Island Volcano Tour From Oahu?
You’ll only be gone for the day so you won’t need to pack much on your volcano tour from Oahu to the Big Island, but you’ll want to be prepared for bipolar weather.
Kilauea is at 4,000ft elevation so some days it can get a little chilly, especially if it’s cloudy. Highs are usually mid 70s while the evenings often dip down to the 50s. The temperature warms up the further down Chain of Craters road you go. Thus, layers are highly recommended when visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
What to wear : Tank/tshirt Pants or shorts (depending how easily you overheat) Good walking shoes/sandals Light/rain jacket (which can double for warmth if it’s chilly) Hat (the desert sun can sometimes get brutal) Sunglasses
Items to bring : Small daypack (to carry clothing layers and misc items) Camera Battery charger
When is the Best Time for a Big Island Volcano Tour from Oahu?
Anytime is the best time to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and take a tour from Oahu to the Big Island. Temperature and weather vary little throughout the year.
However, while Kilauea is an active volcano, the volcanic activity is too sporadic to predict. It could be spewing lava in the morning but by evening it can go to sleep.
Epilogue: Easy Day Trip Oahu Volcano Tour to the Big Island
An Oahu volcano tour to the Big Island is totally doable and something to seriously consider on your Hawaiian vacation.
You have many choices like a Big Island in one day volcanoes, waterfalls, sightseeing, and history small group tour. Or a scenic helicopter tour over the volcano. Or even a self-guided tour with the help of a GPS audio guide.
Don’t let that little body of water called the Pacific Ocean keep you from experiencing an active volcano just because it’s on a different island!

Hawaii Geo Tours are the best!
Wow! Fantastic tour of the erupting volcano!!! The guides are geologists and explained so much about the volcano and how all the Hawaiian islands were created. The pictures I got during the day, and especially at night were incredible! The food and winery tasting were good too. I’ve done this tour twice in the past year and recommend it highly! I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!! 🤙
Highly Recommend!!
Zane was incredibly knowledgeable about the island! If you want to go on a tour with a geologist, this is the one to take!! As a privately owned company, he was able to hit all of the major island highlights as well as take us to places on the island that other tour companies don’t visit. We learned so much about the history of the island and the volcanos on the island all while having a fantastic time! HIGHLY recommend!!
Awesome adventure!
We couldn’t have made a better choice!!! Definitely the guides know their stuff, from history of the island and its people to the geological topics that kept me entertained throughout the trip. We just about went around the island in vip style, the guys were well known everywhere they took us as well as knew their way. Will recommend it to a few friends that are planning to visit the island, it’s a must in your itinerary and couldn’t have made a better choice in tour guide services
Best Island Tour!
A must tour experience! Such an incredible day. What is unique about This tour, is how much you learn about the island formation and the flexibility in where he takes you! We traveled with friends and booked the VIP tour…if you can swing it, definitely put Geotours on your itinerary! Erik will not disappoint. You can see that he is passionate about the island and what he does. Mingled well with our group, lots of laughs, great energy and had a BLAST!!!

Well worth the time and money
David was an outstanding host and tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend this tour. You will see a ton, learn a lot about the island and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Very Best Geo Tour on the Big Island of Hawaii
Zane found his calling. He is incredibly well educated in geology, has traveled the world and knowledgeable about not only the local history, but the flora and fauna of the island too. And he is super personable and able to keep all 10 of interested for almost twelve hours of the day. We conversed about what we wanted to see on a big scale and he narrowed it to specifics based on weather, crowds and our groups patience. He was a saint. If you want to enjoy the very best island tour and get educated on the land and history, hire Zane and you will write the next five star review!
Bolt says Geo Tour Big Island
Dave was a great guide. Very informative tour. I really enjoyed the geological aspect and lots of information on how the islands were formed and keep growing. Many interesting stops along the way including a walk through a lava tube. Very cool! Great experience!
One of the best tours ever
What an excellent way to get to know the Big Island and learn about its unique place on Earth. Our tour guide Eric picked us up on time at our rented villa along with a number of other visitors and we proceeded to spend one of the better days on a tour of the island. Eric is one of the proprietors of the tour, is a degreed geologist and is truly an engaging and friendly person. The tour was excellent which combined both interesting sights and a tremendous amount of local knowledge about lava flows and local history. To say that this was worth the day spent would be to put it mildly. Even at twice the price, I would happily do this again and recommend the tour to anyone.
Geo adventure family trip for the win!
David has a vast knowledge of so much of the island it’s amazing and he charmed us with a ton a factoids the whole day. Highly recommend if you are short on time on the island but want to see as much as you can in little time.

Helicopter Companies Push To Reopen New Plan Restricting Air Tours Over Volcanoes Park
The air tour management plan for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is meant to address noise and environmental concerns. The industry says the new rules compromise safety.
The lead trade association for U.S. air tour operators is challenging a management plan for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that went into effect in June, arguing it’s unsafe for pilots, blocks access for visitors with mobility issues and is squeezing air tours financially.
The plan drastically reduces the number of helicopter sightseeing flights allowed over the park, restricts the routes and altitudes that can be flown and designates at least 60 no-fly days per year, including Sundays. It does not limit tours on other routes over the Big Island.
Proponents of the Volcanoes plan say the measures are needed to limit damage to natural and cultural resources and disruptive noise generated by helicopter tourism.
The industry and operators say they are supportive of those goals, but want the plan to be redone to address concerns about pilot and passenger safety and visitor access to the park.
“With altitude restrictions they have in place, it doesn’t provide the flexibility the pilots need to deviate for weather,” said Cade Clark, chief government affairs officer for Vertical Aviation International, the trade group that filed a petition for review with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this summer .
Clark said VAI wants to assure “that we’re working with the community and the industry to get the best possible outcome.”
But residents who live under or close to the flight path say the management plan was overdue and needs to stay in place.

Fatal Kauai Helicopter Crash Intensifies Spotlight On Air Tour Industry
Mountain View resident Daryl Soares, one of the residents who pushed for the management plan, was surprised by the filing.
“We thought this was a done deal,” he said.
Soares said before the plan went into effect, helicopters would fly over his home every 20 minutes. The difference since the plan went into effect has been “night and day,” he said.
The reduction in air tour traffic could also be the result of a downturn in tourist numbers on the Big Island due to the lack of volcanic activity, said Rob Pacheco of hiking tour company Hawai Forest and Trail.
State data confirms that Big Island tourism has been soft compared to the same period in 2023. Air tour landings at Hilo International Airport during June were down 40% compared to June 2023 according to Department of Transportation data.
The Volcanoes air tour plan “severely curtails the economic viability of air tour operators,” and vacating it while a new plan is developed would provide economic relief to operators, the filing said.
The case is all about money, Soares said, and operators “have no respect for people who live on the ground.”
‘Arbitrary And Capricious’
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Park Service were required to develop management plans for commercial air tours over national parks and tribal lands after Congress passed the National Parks Air Tour Management Plan Act in 2000.
But it took almost two decades for the first of those plans to be developed and it took litigation by a group of Hawaii residents and the nonprofit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility to kickstart the process.
A 2019 lawsuit resulted in a federal court order leading to two dozen plans nationwide, including for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Haleakala National Park. The Haleakala plan is not mentioned in the VAI petition.
The Hawaii Volcanoes Air Tour Management Plan, finalized in December, authorizes 1,550 air tours a year, compared to 11,300 before the plan. It also designates three routes that avoid the summit of Kilauea, restricts flight times to between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and bans flights on Wednesdays and Sundays and certain holidays, with some exceptions for aircraft with quiet technology.
Vertical Aviation International says it supports management plans when they enable air tour operators to “conduct their business cooperatively with national park units.” But the plans can also have severe financial consequences for operators like Safari Helicopters Hawaii, co-plaintiffs in the suit.
Before the plan, Safari was permitted 3,920 flights per year over Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. That number is now 185, according to the filing.
The central allegation of the petition is that the FAA and NPS violated the Administration Practices Act by not “meaningfully evaluating” two issues that were raised in the 60-day public comment period required by federal legislation.
One was the issue of aircraft safety, and the other was the impact of reduced operations on people with disabilities or mobility issues who would be denied reasonable access to the park. The plan is therefore “arbitrary and capricious,” the filing said.
Cade said that VAI wanted the FAA to evaluate the public comments about safety in greater detail, and consider input from the National Parks Overflights Advisory Group, an FAA body that includes representatives from the industry.
Colleen Teubner, policy and litigation attorney for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, based in Washington, D.C., said she was not intimately familiar with the Volcanoes case, but has been working on another legal action brought by VAI over air tours in South Dakota.
In that case, the court granted PEER and the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks status as intervenors for the defendants, the FAA and NPS.
VAI was seeking to stay a ban on air tours over Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial while it appealed the management plan.
The court in that case denied VAI’s request, finding that the FAA and NPS had followed the procedure laid out in federal legislation. That might be an indication of what the agencies will argue in the Volcanoes petition, Teubner said.
Media representatives for the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Park Service said they do not provide comment on pending litigation.
