Home Health Physical Therapy

Home health physical therapy may be part of your care plan if you are having difficulty moving around your home or have had falls due to pain, illness, injury or surgery. For example, in-home physical therapy may be prescribed for you by your doctor if you qualify for home health and you have the following:

  • Surgery like a knee or hip replacement
  • Recent heart attack
  • Acute-onset medical condition
  • Exacerbation of a chronic medical condition like heart failure , COPD or diabetes
  • Trouble with balance or falls
  • Difficulty walking or moving around
  • Pain after an injury, surgery or illness
  • Functional decline related to a progressive neurological condition such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis or ALS
  • Suffered from a stroke and have loss of use of one or more extremities

Our at-home physical therapists and physical therapy assistants help you move with greater ease in the comfort of your home. Your plan of care is based on your needs and your doctor’s orders. Physical therapy for seniors is designed to restore normal mobility or maintain the highest level of functioning possible, so you can do daily tasks and activities you enjoy.

WHAT IS PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Physical therapy is a type of care designed to relieve pain and improve people’s ability to move and function easier.

A doctor may order in-home physical therapy for seniors who have had an injury, surgery or illness that makes it hard to do daily tasks.

If you need home health care physical therapy, you’ll work with a physical therapist – an educated, licensed professional with specialized training. These specialists understand how the body works and what it needs so you can do the things you care about most. Our physical therapists create personalized plans using a variety of treatment techniques such as balance retraining, stretching and strengthening exercises, gait training, teaching fall reduction strategies , physical agent modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation and hot and cold therapy, and patient and caregiver education.

Is home health care right for your loved one?

WHERE IS HOME HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY PROVIDED?

With home health care physical therapy for the elderly, a physical therapist comes to your home. This can be your private residence, a family member’s home, a group home or a senior living community.

AMEDISYS IN-HOME PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES

An Amedisys physical therapist will work with you, your doctor, caregiver and other members of the home health care team to understand your needs. The services you receive will be tailored to your goals and needs. Your in home physical therapy services could include:

  • Balance training to help prevent falls
  • Vestibular rehabilitation to improve balance and reduce dizziness
  • Manual therapy to isolate specific tissues or joints causing pain or other symptoms
  • Strength training
  • Ultrasound to reduce inflammation and promote blood flow
  • Electrical stimulation to reduce pain and improve function
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Light therapy
  • Training to help you walk or stand independently, or transfer from one place to another
  • Education for patients and their caregivers about the patient’s condition, needs and home exercises
  • Personalized exercise program
  • Practicing using an assistive device like a cane or walker, if needed
  • Suggestions to make your home safe such as grab bars or moving rugs

Often, physical therapists for the elderly teach at-home exercises that patients can do between visits to help their progress. As your needs change, your physical therapist will update you and your healthcare team and work to adjust your treatment as needed.

Types of Conditions Treated in At-Home Physical Therapy

In home physical therapy for seniors can be used to help with a wide variety of conditions. With home care physical therapy, we often care for home health patients with:

PHYSICAL THERAPY MAY HELP IN SITUATIONS LIKE THESE

Diane's Story

Diane had several health issues – hypertension, diabetes and heart disease – that were limiting her ability to move around the house and keep up with basic tasks like getting dressed. In home health physical therapy, she worked on balance and strength, which allowed her to walk longer distances and get back to things she loved like church and visiting her family.

Dan's Story

Dan had a recent stroke and struggled to get around his house without a walker. Physical therapy helped minimize his need for a walker, so he could stay as active as possible.

Malcolm's Story

A car accident resulted in multiple fractures to Malcolm’s legs and back and a prolonged hospital stay. To support his recovery while he was wheelchair-bound at home, his doctor ordered physical therapy. Within a couple months, Malcolm learned to transfer from his wheelchair to use the restroom and stand with a walker, eventually progressing toward walking independently.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PHYSICAL THERAPY HOME VISITS

With home health care physical therapy, your therapist comes to your home. At your first physical therapy home visit, they will evaluate your needs. You might be asked:

  • Are you having pain or other symptoms? What level is your pain?
  • Do you have difficulty doing daily tasks like getting out of bed, getting dressed or bathing?
  • How are you sleeping?
  • Do you have a medical history of illness or other health problems?
  • What types of things would you like to be able to do?

Your Amedisys physical therapist might ask you to walk, bend, grasp, climb steps or do other motions to better understand your needs. They will also look at your balance, strength, flexibility, range of motion and posture. At this initial physical therapy home visit, you’ll learn about your treatment plan and how often your physical therapist will visit. You’ll also set up a schedule.

At subsequent physical therapy home visits, you’ll discuss how you’re feeling and any changes since your last visit. You’ll practice exercises and do activities to help you reach your personalized goals. Your physical therapist can teach you how to move safely and help identify environmental hazards at home. They can provide education for your caregiver as well.

At the end of each visit, your Amedisys physical therapist will share updates and progress with the rest of your home health team. This way, all team members who visit you will understand how you’re doing.

HOW LONG IS PHYSICAL THERAPY?

The number of home health physical therapy visits you receive depends on your needs and doctor’s orders. Some patients receive physical therapy for six to eight weeks. If you have a serious or progressive condition, you might require more visits. Alternatively, if your condition improves quickly, you may have only a few home health physical therapy visits along with a home exercise program.

How long is each physical therapy visit? A typical visit is 45 minutes to an hour but the length of physical therapy depends on your needs. Some physical therapists see patients once or twice a week initially, and then once a week once they’re stabilized.

HOME HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY GOALS

You’ll work with your doctor and home health team to set up a treatment plan and goals. Your specific focus areas will depend on your condition and needs. Some common home health physical therapy goals include:

  • Reduce pain and swelling
  • Improve your ability to move around
  • Educate patients and caregivers
  • Regain muscle control
  • Prevent disability or further deterioration
  • Return to prior levels of function after a stroke, injury, surgery or accident
  • Improve your balance and flexibility
  • Increase physical fitness and stamina
  • Manage a chronic illness at home
  • Improve circulation
  • Avoid unnecessary trips to the hospital
  • Breathing activities to conserve energy
  • Prevent falls and increase home safety
  • Teach you safe ways to stand, sit, lie down, and walk up and down stairs
  • Learn to use an assistive device like a cane or walker
  • Resume normal routines and regain independence

Physical therapists help patients prevent falls by improving strength and core muscle stability.

Amedisys physical therapists take the time to review your needs and address issues that you may not have worked on in the past. With us, physical therapy is more than exercises and tasks. It’s about assessing your health and your environment and making changes that improve your day-to-day function.

The benefits of physical therapy for seniors can be significant, especially if patients are willing to learn and try new things. We recognize that change can be hard, so we focus on building a strong patient-therapist relationship first. Then we explore ways to do tasks safely and offer tips at the right pace for you.

Many of our patients have lost hope that they can do tasks they used to be able to do, such as showering on their own, gardening or going to church or the store again. They may believe falling and losing function are an inevitable part of aging. But they aren’t. You may be surprised at what you can accomplish after physical therapy. We’ll empower you with tools to help you continue safely achieving your goals after physical therapy ends.

99% of Amedisys home health care centers are rated 4+ Quality Stars.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HOME CARE PHYSICAL THERAPY

There are many misconceptions about physical therapy, especially in the home health setting. Here are a few misconceptions as well as the facts:

Some people think physical therapy is just a series of exercises that they can’t realistically maintain on their own. But it’s much more than exercise, especially in the home environment.

In addition to helping people recover from injuries, accidents and surgeries, physical therapists can also help prevent injuries and falls and improve patients’ abilities to do daily tasks. By addressing problems early on, patients can save money and minimize their risk of surgery and hospitalization later.

The goal of physical therapy is to reduce pain, not add to it. Your physical therapist may ask you to move in ways you aren’t used to, but treatment should not hurt. There’s no need to delay care to avoid making pain worse. Your physical therapist should check in with you about your comfort level, so be sure to tell them if something bothers you.

Massage and exercise can be part of physical therapy, but physical therapists can do much more. Physical therapists are movement experts who improve quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care and patient education. They have specialized knowledge and skills and have completed an accredited physical therapy program with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in physical therapy. Physical therapy assistants (PTAs) have completed an associate or bachelor's degree. Both PTs and PTAs are also licensed by the state.

The purpose of at home physical therapy is to empower patients to manage their condition on their own. Physical therapists teach you the tools to take control of your illness or recovery. With home health care physical therapy, you learn to use tools and equipment that are readily available in your own home. If you do your daily PT activities, the benefits can last long after therapy sessions end.

IN-HOME PHYSICAL THERAPY COST

Does Medicare cover physical therapy at home? If you’re eligible for home health and your doctor orders physical therapy as part of your plan of care, the in-home physical therapy cost is typically  covered by Medicare , Medicaid and some private insurance plans.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR HOME HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY?

To be covered by Medicare and Medicaid, you must meet eligibility criteria for home health care . These include:

  • You’re considered homebound. This means it’s very difficult for you to leave home and you need the help of a supportive device (walker, wheelchair, etc.) or another person to do so.
  • You need part-time or intermittent skilled care. This may include physical therapy, skilled nursing, speech therapy or an ongoing need for occupational therapy.
  • Your doctor orders home health for you.

Ask your doctor if home health care is an option for you.

If you don’t meet these home health criteria, you can still get private physical therapy at home if you pay for it out of pocket or through private insurance. Or you may want to consider a local outpatient clinic.

HOW TO FIND IN-HOME PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES NEAR YOU

Since home health physical therapy requires a doctor’s order, many patients find in home physical therapy services through their healthcare provider. Your doctor may refer you to a home health provider like Amedisys.

Here are a few considerations when choosing a physical therapist:

  • Does the physical therapist have experience or specialized training in the issues you’re facing?
  • Can the physical therapist come to your home?
  • Does the provider accept your insurance?

Physical therapy can help seniors with a wide variety of health concerns. If you’re recovering from a surgery or injury or living with a chronic disease, ask your doctor about home health physical therapy. You can also call the Amedisys home health agency near you to find out how physical therapy can help you maintain your independence.

patient stories – how sumant found help in portea to provide physiotherapy for her mother?

I availed Portea Physiotherapy service for my mother and would like to inform you about your incredible and extraordinary team member, and my mother’s physiotherapist – Dr. Divya Tickoo.

Divya has been giving physiotherapy sessions, to my mother – Mrs. Suresh Ahuja for about a month now.

Let me start by mentioning here, that I judge people much more, by the strength of their character, and how good a person is as a human being, rather than just their professional expertise, and knowledge in their area of excellence.

In the case of Divya, She has not just proven herself to be a great physiotherapist to my mother but also has talent and expertise by her side.

More importantly, she is a warm-hearted and gentle person with character traits, which are hard to find these days – kindness, grace, empathy, and compassion.

Divya’s physiotherapy sessions have helped my mother immensely over the past 3-4 weeks. Thanks to her consistent support, my mother who has an L3 and D9 compression fracture of the spine, has started walking to the bathroom with the help of a walker, she also helps my mother – walk around the living room of my house, with the help of a walker. She is helping her, persistently with her physiotherapy.

Moreover, Divya has taught my mother certain physiotherapy exercises to do on her own every day, which she has been doing regularly – and these exercises have been quite helpful, in regaining her leg muscle strength and reducing her pain while walking, and sitting in bed. She is now able to sit on the bed without any pain, over a much longer period of time, than she previously used to, before these sessions started.

I perceive Dr. Divya Tickoo – as one of the best physiotherapists. Her phenomenal competence and skills, combined with her empathy and devotion, to the well-being of the patient, make her an exceptional person.

People like Divya should be acknowledged, appreciated, rewarded, and promoted in every organization.

Is Physical Therapy Covered by Insurance?

Multiple factors will determine your cost of treatment

  • What to Ask Your Insurance
  • What to Ask Your PT
  • Factors That Affect Cost
  • Finding Affordable PT

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of physical therapy (PT) varies and depends on whether you have health insurance.

Physical therapy might be covered by your insurance plan, either partly or in full. To find out if your insurance will cover PT, you will need your healthcare provider to confirm that PT is medically necessary. This applies to private and other insurance plans, including Medicare, and worker's compensation insurance.

Physical therapy typically requires several sessions. Even if your insurance fully covers the treatment, the costs of physical therapy can still add up because of your co-pays.

If you only have partial coverage from your insurance, you'll have to factor in that cost as well as the portion of the service fee that you're responsible for paying.

Here's what you should know about how much physical therapy costs with and without health insurance.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company

Ask your insurance company about coverage before you schedule appointments and start physical therapy (PT).

Your insurance company can help you figure out how much you will likely end up paying for each PT session and what requirements need to be met for PT to be covered.

Is Physical Therapy Covered as Part of My Plan?

Check if your insurance plan actually covers physical therapy and if so, what part of the cost you'll have to pay. If physical therapy is not covered, you'll pay the rate that your insurer sets with the physical therapist.

If you have coverage, ask whether you will have to pay copays (a set fee for each visit) or coinsurance (your insurance pays a portion and you pay a portion). Most people have a co-payment of about $25 to $35 per physical therapy session. However, co-payments can be as high as $50 or $100.

If you have  Medicare  as your primary insurance, your plan will cover about 80% of the claim for PT, and you may have to pay the remaining 20%.  If you have Medicare and secondary insurance, check if the secondary insurance will cover all or a portion of the remaining bill.

What Is Insurance Cost-Sharing?

Many people have insurance plans that include  cost-sharing . In this arrangement, some of the costs of services are covered by your insurance carrier and some out-of-pocket costs are your responsibility.

You may also have a co-payment to pay each time you visit your physical therapist. You may have a deductible to meet each year before your insurance coverage will start paying for PT.

Is a Referral Needed?

For coverage to kick in for physical therapy, you may need a referral from a healthcare provider stating that you need to have PT (medically necessary).

In some cases, certain tests, such as imaging as part of a diagnosis, might also be needed.

Are There Limits on the Coverage?

If your insurance covers physical therapy, ask if there are limits on the coverage.

For example, there could be a limit on the number of appointments per year or per condition that will be covered.

Ask about limits for the following:

  • Number of physical therapy appointments
  • Amount of time you can get physical therapy
  • Costs that are covered

Do I Need to Stay In-Network?

Ask your insurance if you need to stay in-network when you look for PT. If you're able to go out of network, ask about the difference in costs between in-network and out-of-network providers.

Once you choose a physical therapist, check to see if they are a participating provider with your health insurance company. Staying in-network can keep your costs down. If the therapist you want to work with is in-network, provide them with your insurance information. From there, the therapy office will submit claims for payment to your insurance company.

Does the Plan Cover PT Equipment?

In some cases, your physical therapist may recommend that you use certain equipment or devices at home as part of your therapy. Ask your insurance company if these devices are covered.

Questions to Ask Your Physical Therapist

After you have contacted your insurance about coverage, requirements, and limits, check with your physical therapist to get an estimate of potential costs.

How Are Therapy Services Billed?

Understanding how therapy services are billed will help you to find out what your out-of-pocket costs could be. Physical therapists bill for their services based on what they do during sessions.

For example, your first visit is an  initial evaluation  and it's usually billed at a higher rate than follow-up sessions. During follow-up therapy sessions, your therapist may bill for the different treatments they do.

For example, if your therapist does an  ultrasound , joint mobilization, and prescribes exercise during your session, three separate units of therapy will be billed. Each unit will have a different charge, and adding up the charges will give you the total cost billed.

Co-Payments Can Add Up

PT is often ongoing and not just one appointment. You may need to go several times each week for weeks or months, depending on your recovery. Even if your co-payment for a session is small, the costs can add up over time.

What Are the Costs Without Insurance Coverage?

If your insurance does not cover physical therapy or only offers partial coverage, you will have to pay for some or all of your PT yourself. When you contact your physical therapist’s office, tell them that your insurance does not cover your therapy and that you will be paying out of pocket.

The office can provide you with a fee schedule that lists the amount charged for each separate service that will be provided by your physical therapist.

Once you have a copy of the fee schedule, talk to your therapist. Make sure that you understand which services will be offered and billed. You can decide if the treatment plan is something you can afford.

For example, if your therapist is planning to do  electrical stimulation , therapeutic activity, and therapeutic exercise during your treatment, add up what each service costs to get an idea of how much the entire session will cost.

How Do Sliding Scale Payments Work?

Your PT office will work with you to provide the best care at the lowest cost. For example, they may offer a sliding scale payment plan where you pay a set amount based on your income or set up an interest-free payment plan that allows you to pay off the cost of your sessions over a few months instead of with one big payment.

Factors That Affect PT Cost

There are a few factors that can affect how much physical therapy will cost. Keeping these points in mind when you're estimating how much you may have to pay to have PT will help you prepare.

Surgery or Injury Recovery

If you have had a sports injury like a  sprain or strain , you may only need a few sessions of physical therapy. Many people go to PT after a minor injury to learn what to do—and what not to do—while they're healing.

Your therapist can teach you self-care exercises to do while you're recovering. In that case, your total cost of physical therapy could be less than $100 if you have insurance or several hundred dollars if you're uninsured.

If you have had major surgery like a joint replacement or  fracture repair , you may need to go to physical therapy for several months. In that case, your out-of-pocket expenses could add up a lot.

If your surgery is elective and planned, try to budget for it. For example, having some extra cash on hand to cover several co-payments a week for a few months will be helpful.

Your physical therapist may recommend items you can buy to help with your recovery. You will probably have to pay for these items yourself.

Examples of equipment you might need to buy for PT include:

  • Lumbar roll
  • Cervical roll
  • Exercise ball
  • Balance board
  • Kinesiology tape
  • Shoulder pulleys
  • Resistance bands
  • Assistive devices like a cane or crutches (especially if you'll be progressing with gait training after surgery)

Your health insurance plan may or may not cover equipment for PT. If your therapist recommends you buy any of these items, ask them to recommend affordable options.

Keep in mind that you do not necessarily need to buy top-of-the-line equipment. You might even be able to make some items yourself at home—for example, a lumbar roll or  shoulder pulley .

Finding Affordable Physical Therapy

One of the main ways to save money on physical therapy is by seeing a therapist who is in-network for your insurance (because seeing  a provider that's out of network  will cost you more).

You can call your insurance carrier to ask if a PT is in-network or search for providers online.

If you're worried about how you will pay for physical therapy, tell your therapist right up front. You can talk to them about how to get the care you need while keeping costs low.

The skills and motivation offered by a  licensed physical therapist  are essential to your recovery, but your therapist can also show you what you can do on your own. Not only will this empower you to be actively involved in your recovery, but it could also help you save money.

For example, you might be able to make PT more affordable by:

  • Support a speedy recovery by following your home exercise program
  • Doing therapy on your own at home and visiting the therapy clinic a few times a month for “booster sessions” (rather than several times a week)
  • Ask about  telehealth  options (ask about insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs compared to in-person appointments)

You might be able to reduce your physical therapy costs in other ways, such as:

  • Using a  health savings account (HSA) or flexible savings account (FSA)
  • Asking your PT clinic or provider if they offer lower prices for services if you pay in cash (sometimes called "self-pay")
  • Reaching out to  patient advocates ,  financial assistance  departments, and community resources and ask about payment arrangements or other kinds of help paying for your medical bills
  • Getting an  explanation of benefits  (EOB) and itemized list of charges for all your medical bills to make sure there are no errors

The cost of physical therapy (PT) can vary based on the type of treatment, how long you need to attend PT, and whether or not you have insurance.

If you have insurance, contact your health insurance provider and ask about coverage for PT before you call to make an appointment with a PT. Even if your insurance will cover PT, you will most likely need to have money for the co-pay costs for sessions.

If you do not have health insurance or if your insurance does not cover PT, you will have to pay for it yourself. It is worth discussing ways to save money on PT with a therapist, such as payment plans or doing exercises at home.

Working with a physical therapist can make all the difference if you're recovering from an injury or surgery. Unfortunately, the cost of therapy services can be steep and may prevent people from realizing the gains they could make by going to PT.

If cost is a barrier to treatment for you, reach out to your provider or a local PT office and ask how you can get the best care that you can afford.

Most health insurers, including Medicare and Medicaid, will cover all or part of the cost of physical therapy services. Private health insurers will often cover a portion of the cost for PT as well.

You may have cost-sharing for PT, like meeting your insurance deductible or copays. Contact your insurance carrier to see if PT is a covered service.

If you have health insurance, your copay for PT will probably be fairly low, like $25-$30 per session. If you don't have insurance, PT could cost you hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

Most insurance companies cover a portion of the physical therapy bill and leave the rest for you to cover with a copay. This payment will need to be made for every PT session you attend. Ask your insurance company about your financial responsibility for PT before you make your first appointment.

FAQs about in-home physical therapy

Can physical therapy be done at home.

Yes, absolutely! You shouldn’t do physical therapy on your own, but you can absolutely do physical therapy with a licensed physical therapist from the comfort of your own home. In fact, the ease and comfort that comes with in-home physical therapy is the reason Luna exists!

What does a home physical therapist do?

A home physical therapist does exactly what a standard physical therapist does — just from the comfort of your own home. They work with you to help you manage your pain and address your injuries or disorders to increase your mobility and comfort. That includes a combination of education and physical exercises that together will help you heal.

How often should you do physical therapy at home?

The frequency of your in-home physical therapy sessions depends on your diagnosis and the severity of your injury or disorder. At the beginning of your physical therapy program, you may need to see your therapist twice or thrice a week to promote a quick recovery. As your body heals, you may be able to reduce the number of sessions per week.

Similarly, the frequency at which you should do the physical therapy exercises your therapist assigns to you depends on your specific condition. Your therapist will tell you how often to do the exercises.

How long is a home health physical therapy visit?

Each in-home Luna physical therapy session lasts between 45 and 55 minutes.

How many days will Medicare pay for physical therapy?

Medicare does not have a set number of days of physical therapy that it will pay for. Instead, Medicare Part B will pay for 80% of the Medicare-approved cost of medically-necessary services. Since 2018 there has been no upper cap to how much Medicare will pay for medically-necessary physical therapy.

Can you do physical therapy on your own?

You can’t do it well or safely. While the internet is full of advice on how to do physical therapy on your own, at best, it can lead to ineffective treatment, and at worst, it can lead to further injury. A professional physical therapist can not only give you the correct, detailed diagnosis, they can also guide you through the therapy, ensuring a safe and speedy recovery process.

How much does in-home physical therapy cost?

You can either use your insurance or pay a flat fee for your Luna physical therapy.

With commercial insurance, you’ll pay the same amount you would pay to visit a clinic. We accept all major insurances and Medicare. Most Medicare plans with a secondary cover your full cost, so you don’t pay anything to Luna. If you self-pay, the cost is $125 per visit. You won’t be charged until you complete your visit.

Call 866-806-3599 to instantly verify your benefits.

How many times a week should you do in-home physical therapy?

It depends on your diagnosis and the extent of your injury or disorder. In the beginning, you may need to get physical therapy two or three times a week to promote a speedy recovery. As your body heals and the therapist sees how it is responding to the therapy, you may be able to reduce the number of sessions per week.

How long should in-home physical therapy last?

It depends on the condition being treated as well as your healing rate. Every condition is different and everyone heals at a different rate, so there’s no universal length for a physical therapy program. Your physical therapist can give you a sense of how long the program will last when you first begin. Then, they will track your progress and make adjustments as needed.

How do you know if in-home physical therapy is working?

You get better — that’s how you know if physical therapy is working! If you don’t feel yourself getting better, it is important that you speak openly with your therapist so they can discuss your options with you and make sure you are on the right treatment plan.

When should I stop doing in-home physical therapy?

As a general rule, you should continue your physical therapy until you reach your therapy goals or until you and your therapist decide that your goals need to be re-evaluated due to the severity of your condition. Physical therapy is by no means an indefinite commitment, but it is one you want to see through to the end — whether that end is six weeks away or twelve weeks away — if you want to get the best results.

Can you do too much physical therapy?

If you are doing physical therapy on your own, it is very easy to overdo it. If you are working with a physical therapist, it is virtually impossible to do too much, given that your physical therapy treatment will end once you have achieved your goals, whether those are reducing pain, increasing mobility, or something else.

What is the success rate of in-home physical therapy

There is no official success rate of physical therapy — whether it is in-home or at a clinic — but studies have shown the treatment to be very effective as well as cost-effective. If you commit to your treatment both at your physical therapy sessions and outside of them, then you are likely to see an improvement in your pain and/or mobility.

Should you do physical therapy exercises at home everyday?

As a general rule, yes, you should do your physical therapy exercises every day. However, if your therapist tells you to do them at a different frequency, you should always follow their advice; they know your condition best.

Home Physiotherapy FAQs

What is a home physiotherapist.

Physiotherapy is a healing method focused on mobility. Home Physiotherapists help patients in their own home setting to regain mobility, as far as possible. They assess, diagnose and treat disabilities. From back pain, neck pain and knee pain to Parkinson’s, Stroke Paralysis and post operative physiotherapy, our physiotherapists can heal both chronic and acute problems at home.

Who needs physiotherapy at home?

  • Post-operative physiotherapy at home after surgery like hip or knee replacement
  • Those with fall and balance problems
  • Those needing Neuro Rehab after stroke, Multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease
  • Elderly people who would like to have a family member around
  • Pregnant / Expecting moms who cannot step out regularly, without a family member

How can we help with physiotherapy at home?

ReLiva home visit physiotherapists heal patients in the comfort of their homes. They assess, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan which varies depending on the patient’s needs. A physiotherapy session is usually around 20-45 minutes, depending on the criticality of the problem. ReLiva physiotherapist will bring specialized equipment to facilitate your recovery. They will design exercise programs around what you have at home.

What do physiotherapists do at home visits?

Physiotherapists use exercise therapy to strengthen the muscles of patients and ensure muscle function is at an optimal level. Physiotherapy exercises have been medically proven to be one of the most effective ways to prevent and reduce pain. Many of the problems and challenges of ageing are better managed in your own home environment, where the home physio can see the problems on the spot. Similarly, after surgeries like joint replacement, ReLiva home physio programs start as soon as you reach back home from the hospital. The focus is to reduce pain and odoema as much as possible, along with retraining the muscles to gain strength and speeding up your recovery.

How to prepare for a Physiotherapy at home session?

Physiotherapy sessions are designed to help the patient recover faster whether it is a one-time injury or a chronic illness. Here are a few tips to ensure you make the most of your session

  • Wear comfortable clothing. Ensure you do not wear clothing which impedes your movement as your physiotherapist will need to evaluate your joint stability and movement
  • Speak to your physiotherapist on what exactly are your areas of pain and what level of function you would like to achieve through your sessions
  • Provide your physiotherapist with information such as how the pain started, what is the nature of pain and for how long you have been facing the problem
  • Select a spacious and good spot in your house, which is well ventilated, well lit, and free from any clutter, as the physiotherapist might bring some small exercise equipment for your session.

Cost Of Home Physiotherapy In India

There are several factors that determine physiotherapy cost like the duration of the session, the criticality of the problem, and the type of physiotherapy offered.

Physiotherapy charges also vary from city to city. Usually, the price ranges anywhere from 450 to 2500 INR. Physiotherapy at home charges also varies from the charges sought at hospitals and clinics.

In fact, physiotherapy at home has been found to provide a good value for money compared to getting hospitalized for physical therapy.

Does Medicare cover physical therapy? Yes, and you might be eligible for more services, too

About half of physical therapists' patients are over the age of 65.

“Physical therapists are movement experts,” says Roger Herr, American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) president. They’re especially important to older adults given that about half of physical therapists’ patients are over the age of 65—and that number is expected to grow as the population ages.

As part of their scope of practice, physical therapists provide evaluation, consultation, education, and treatment to improve balance, mobility, strength and endurance, coordination, and flexibility, says Herr.

Common conditions treated by physical therapy include osteoarthritis , low back pain, and urinary incontinence.

“Physical therapy can also be useful as a preventative measure, such as when you feel shaky on your feet to prevent a fall, or it can assist in your recovery after a fall or surgery,” says Herr.

Medicare coverage of physical therapy services

Whether you’re staying in a facility, such as a hospital or nursing home, or at home, and need physical therapy, Medicare provides coverage to manage a chronic condition, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) , treat an injury or illness, or to ensure you can maintain your independence. Although an order or referral is not required under Medicare, a doctor, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or physician assistant must certify that the services are medically necessary.

Medicare Part A will fully cover in-patient physical therapy for the first 60 days after a deductible is met , provided skilled nursing and/or rehabilitation services are required daily. After that, co-payments apply.

Outpatient coverage, which includes visits to a physical therapy clinic, or at home for older adults  who are not homebound, is covered by Medicare Part B . After you meet the annual deductible, Medicare pays 80%, and you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.

If you haven’t checked your coverage lately, you might be eligible for more services.

“Physical therapy coverage through Medicare changed in 2018,” says Diane Omdahl, author of Medicare for You and cofounder of the Medicare advisory firm 65 Incorporated .

“Before that, there were coverage limits. The rule changed to unlimited Medicare coverage for medically necessary outpatient physical therapy services each calendar year,” says Omdahl.

Medicare Advantage coverage of physical therapy services

“ Medicare Advantage plans may require prior authorization before approving your physical therapy treatment,” says Herr. Your physical therapist may need to perform an evaluation and submit a treatment plan to get approval for coverage, Herr explains.

Once approved, Medicare Advantage plans offer the same coverage as Medicare Parts A and B, with a few exceptions. Medicare Advantage plans may have different deductibles, require members to use physical therapy services from their networks and/or conduct more frequent audits or reviews to minimize costs and reduce over-utilization of services, says Herr.

Medicaid coverage of physical therapy services

Medicaid coverage of physical therapy services is an optional benefit depending on your state , so you’ll need to check to see what benefits your state offers .

Coverage of occupational therapy and speech-language pathology

In addition to physical therapy, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid generally provide the same coverage for other rehabilitation therapies as long as they are deemed medically necessary, says Herr.

This includes occupational therapy , or assistance helping you perform activities of daily living  (such as bathing or dressing), home management, and community re-entry to maintain current capabilities or slow decline.

It also includes speech-language pathology , which offers support for help with speech and language skills, swallowing, and cognitive skills to maintain or improve current function or slow decline.

Outpatient physical therapy in a facility or at home—which is better?

All outpatient therapy is covered by Medicare Part B, but you may wonder if getting physical therapy at home is as useful as that provided at a facility.

“Physical therapy locations may have additional equipment and resources than what a physical therapist can provide in the home,” says Herr.

In addition, Herr says that the wait for physical therapy services at a facility may be less than those provided in the home.

“Going out to get physical therapy also helps with socialization, which may have been hindered when dealing with a mobility issue,” says Herr.

For some patients, however, home-based outpatient therapy provides an opportunity to address environmental challenges in the home and ensure that an individual can manage safely and independently in their own setting. Home-based therapy also serves to improve access to therapy for those without reliable transportation, says Herr.

Difficulty finding physical therapists

Even though Medicare covers physical therapy, it may be hard to find a physical therapist .

“The physical therapy shortage peaked during the pandemic, but we’re still seeing double-digit vacancies,” says Herr.

Other factors continue to contribute to the ongoing shortage, according to a KFF news report . One is that physical therapists are now required to have doctorates, so fewer students are entering the field. Another is that Medicare has cut physical therapy reimbursements by 9%  over the last four years, which has led to lower staffing levels.

How much does private physiotherapy cost?

Home / Blog / How much does private physiotherapy cost?

We all find it difficult to talk about costs and how much certain treatments will cost. Cost is a large factor for any purchase, especially when you are committing to an ongoing course of physiotherapy to help you.

Reputation rather than cost should be one of the main reasons you have chosen the physiotherapist that you would like to work with, a close second being the travelling time and costs involved to get to the appointment.

Any good physio that you talk to will tell you that referrals is the biggest source of patients to them, self-referrals, GP referrals and consultant referrals. The one common question that gets asked the most is “how much does private physiotherapy cost?”

The answer to this question can vary, for a number of different reasons, but we hope this article will help you understand the costs that can be involved in starting private physiotherapy.

The cost of physiotherapy sessions

The cost of physiotherapy sessions can vary largely, depending on how long your session is, and also dependant on the speciality and experience of the physiotherapist. Having a private physiotherapy appointment in your own home can vary greatly from £50 – £180 for a 1 hour appointment.

There are a number of factors to consider that may affect treatment pricing in general:

  • Cost depends if you are attending a clinic or if you are having a home visiting physio. Attending a clinic is certainly cheaper but may not be for everyone.
  • Is the physiotherapy taking place in Central London, in the suburbs or outside of London?  The location can vary the price. Treatment is more expensive if you are attending a clinic in a prestigious location such as Harley Street, London. We currently provide a home visiting service nationwide.
  • Whether you approach a company that solely provides home visiting appointments, or whether they run clinics. Physio at home tends to be cheaper if the company focuses specifically on providing a home physiotherapy service as they have fewer overheads. This is often but not always the case.

The cost of a course of physiotherapy treatment.

You will find that many physiotherapy practices can offer discounted package rates if you book more than one session at a time, helping you know exactly the cost of your treatment beyond your initial assessment.

We can offer you very affordable and competitive pricing. You will find this information on our website . Please contact our team on 0330 335 1016 or fill in our online enquiry form if you wish to discuss your requirements.

We’ve been doing this for a long time, probably the longest in London and it all started back in the 90’s in Parsons Green, where we still have a great clinic.

Our aim then and our aim now, to never, ever compromise on doing the very best for our patients.

We’ve got some great spaces, in wonderful places and the most amazing Team – trust us to get you back to where you need to be, and who knows even a little further forward!

There's a TPC Physio near you!

Mobile physio services for seniors tailored to your needs.

About Us Img Icon

The Physio Co (TPC) is a mobile physiotherapy company dedicated to caring for seniors. We come to you wherever you call home—a private home, a retirement village unit or an aged care facility.

Our caring, qualified physios help by treating injuries, aches and pains or getting elderly individuals mobile after hospital stays or operations. We service most of Melbourne, Sydney, Geelong and Adelaide.

We also create treatment and exercise plans. These involve regular visits to help seniors achieve their health, fitness and independence goals.

Because at TPC, we believe physical therapy is about doing more and getting more out of life—not just muscles and joints. It’s about gaining the physical strength to improve your emotional well-being—through improved happiness, confidence, independence—and vital social and family connections.

“It’s not just about joints and muscles; it’s about a better quality of life.”

How in-home physio works

You call us on 1300 797 793. We’ll explain how we work together and book your first appointment

A physiotherapist will visit you at a convenient time at home for your first appointment.

During your appointment, your physio will listen closely to your needs and concerns, learning more about any pain, health concerns, and goals.

Your physiotherapist will complete an assessment based on the above. Then, they’ll create a one-page plan to achieve your health goals.

Once you’ve agreed to the plan, your physio will start physio sessions in the most convenient location—your home.

TPCer Kathy explains what to expect during your initial appointment with a TPC physio.

Physio home visits: all your questions, answered

Our team are specialists in helping older people be as mobile, safe and happy as possible.

We’re excited about helping you!

Our caring and experienced physiotherapists will come to your home, complete a physio assessment, create a plan to achieve your health goals and conduct physiotherapy treatment in the most convenient and comfortable location possible: right at home.

Mobile or home visit physiotherapy improves walking & moving; relieves pain and makes life much easier.

Our physiotherapists are experts in helping clients to be as mobile, safe and happy as possible by relieving pain, improving strength and maximising quality of life.

Our physiotherapists are compassionate, caring people and very dedicated – they are also cheerful because they love what they are doing… A large (and unofficial) part of our treatment is lifting your spirits and ensuring that you look forward to your physiotherapy home service and are motivated to work hard on exercises designed to help you.  The friendly nature and happy outlook of our physiotherapists has proven to help many older Australians along their treatment journey.

As we get older we generally get less active, more prone to accidents and illness and less mobile and independent than we once were.

This is where physiotherapy treatment at home can help.  First you don’t have to go anywhere, you will be more relaxed at your own home, and we have a dedicated team of exceptional physiotherapists who have the knowledge, training and experience to help you.

For those who have recently had an accident or an operation, physio home visits are a blessing. Not being mobile or having limited mobility no longer prevents you from obtaining the help that you need.

Each member of our physio team uses their physiotherapy skill and experience to help elderly people at home. Health problems we help improve, include:

  • Difficulty getting around
  • Pain relief
  • Rehabilitation
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Foot and leg problems
  • Preparing for surgery
  • Rehabilitation after surgery or hospital
  • See more below

Physiotherapists use research and experience-based techniques including stretches, targeted exercises and massage to help the body improve its ability to move and function and to reduce pain.  Even as we age, our body tissue continues to regenerate and physiotherapy uses this natural regeneration to help build muscles and increase movement, flexibility and independence.

In the comfort of your own home our physiotherapists will help you go through a series of exercises and your physio session may include massage as well.  Where in your home you obtain treatment is up to you and your physio, it is usually a combination of in a chair, on a bed and a carpeted area free of obstacles – anywhere that is private and you feel comfortable.

Dress down for your physio appointment!  You need to be in comfortable clothing that allows free movement.  The type of clothing you should wear does depend upon where your pain or injury is.  However, you can’t go wrong if you wear a loose t-shirt, singlet or short sleeved blouse and shorts or soft wide pants that can be pushed up above the knee.  Sneakers or runners are ideal as they provide support.

You don’t need to have any equipment for our physio at home service to be a success.  Our physios will work with you to determine the best place for treatment, and if there is any particular equipment we need, we will bring it to you at your home (or find things to use nearby!).

If you live in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide or Geelong we likely have a physiotherapist that can come to you within the next 3-5 days.

If you don’t live within these areas, please do give us a call (1300 797 793) to check if we can help.
