Laka glacier trek overview:.

The Laka Glacier trek is a challenging high altitude trek in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The trek takes trekkers through a remote and rugged terrain, before reaching the Laka Glacier, which is situated at an elevation of around 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) above sea level.

The trek starts from the village of Bara Bhangal, which is located in the Kangra district, and ends at the Laka Glacier. The journey usually takes around 8-10 days to complete, depending on the route taken. Along the way, trekkers pass through dense forests, small villages, and steep rocky terrain, offering great views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal mountain ranges.

The trek offers a challenging experience as it passes through high altitude passes like Kugti Pass (5,315 m) and other steep sections. The trek is strenuous and requires proper acclimatization and a high level of fitness. The trek is not recommended for inexperienced trekkers or those who are not properly equipped.

The best time to trek to Laka Glacier is from June to September, when the snow has melted, and the weather is favorable for trekking. However, trekkers should be adequately prepared for unpredictable weather conditions and for the cold temperatures at high altitude.

It's advisable to take the guidance of a local trek leader or a expert guide as the trek routes are remote and poorly marked. The trekkers should also be equipped with proper clothing and equipment as the trek passes through a remote and inhospitable terrain, with no facilities for food and accommodation.

A Guide to the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj + Insider Tips (2024)

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

If you’re planning on doing the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj, Dharamshala, you have come to the right place!

McLeodCanj, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is most famous for being the home of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. This town is close to the city of Dharamshala (a flight or night bus away from Delhi ) and tourists from all over the world come here to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in McLeodGanj , and this town is also home to one of the best Himalayan treks to do on your own: the trek to Triund Hill.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on trekking to Triund. You can hike to Triund in 1 or 2 days . I did this hike by myself in one day, but it is also possible to camp at Triund and hike back the next day, but more about this later!

How to Do the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

View on the way to Tirund Hill in McLeodGanj

There are two hiking trails to reach Triund Hill, and they both start in Bhagsu, which is a 20 to 30-minute walk from McLeodGanj.

While nearly everyone takes the easiest trail to hike to Triund and Back, I highly recommend making a loop and taking the easy trail to hike up and the difficult trail to hike back down.

I did it the other way around and took the difficult trail to hike up. This was my favourite one, as I only encountered two other hikers and found the landscape more beautiful here.

This guide describes how to hike up the easier way and hike back down the more difficult way. It speaks for itself that you can also do the hike the other way around as I did, though.

Tip: The way to Triund can easily be found using Maps.me. This app comes in particularly handy for the more difficult trail, as the path isn’t always as straightforward here.

Do you need a guide to hike to Triund?

Although you can hire a guide to do this trek, this is not necessary and many people hike independently. The path is easy to follow and the hike is not too difficult.

However, if you don’t have much hiking experience and would prefer to do the hike with a guide, you can book the guided Triund trek on GetYourGuide. This trek takes 2 days and includes a guide, camping and food.

Hiking from McLeodGanj to Triund

Triund Hill in Himachal Pradesh

If you’re starting in McLeodGanj, you will first have to head to Bhagsu , which is 2,5 km (1.5 mi) from McLeodGanj. You can either get here by walking or by taking a taxi.

From Bhagsu, you will have to hike (or continue the taxi drive) all the way up to the Gallu Devi Temple . This is where you will find the start of the path to Triund. It all depends on your personal pace, but it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get from Bhagsu to Gallu. The right path can easily be found either by asking a local or using Maps.me.

From here on, it is pretty straightforward. There are arrows marking the way to Triund and it is difficult to get lost, as there’s only one path.

It takes a total of approximately 4 to 6 hours to reach Triund (the total distance is around 10 km or 6.2 mi), depending on your personal pace.

It is good to know that there are some shops and restaurants on the trail from Gallu to Triund.

Hiking to Triund Hill

Once you reach Triund, you will have a beautiful view of the Dhauladhar Mountain Range . This includes a view of Moon Peak, Riflehorn and Arthur’s seat.

It is quite big there and this is a nice place to stay for a while (or camp if you want to do the trek in 2 days). By the time I reached Triund, the sky wasn’t clear anymore and you couldn’t really see the mountains, but this is what it looks like on a clear day:

Triund Hill on a clear day

Camping at Triund (optional)

It is possible to camp at Triund if you would like to do the hike in 2 days, although it is possible to do it in 1 day too. I didn’t stay the night at Triund myself, but I’ve heard it is amazing, as you will be able to see the sunset/sunrise and sleep under the stars.

If you want to camp at Triund , it is good to know that you can rent a tent and sleeping bags in the shops there. If you’re visiting the place during the high season, at the weekend or in the holidays, it is better to book in advance, though, as the tents might be booked out (just ask the place where you’re staying in McLeodGanj to book it for you).

Another option is to stay at the government guesthouse . This place can be booked at the Forest Department Office of Dharamshala (+91 1892-224887).

Camping at Triund

Hiking further: the Laka Glacier Trek (optional)

I didn’t do this myself, but once you reach Triund, it is possible to hike further and do the Laka Glacier Trek. This is a 2 km (1.2 mi) long, steep uphill trek and it is quite strenuous.

This being said, this trek will take you higher along the breathtaking landscapes of the Dhauladhar snow-clad mountains and Kangra Valley. As its name predicts, the Laka Glacier Trek ends at the Laka Glacier, which stands 3,200 m (10,498 ft) above sea level.

It is good to know that you will need 2 or 3 days if you decide to hike to this glacier.

Hiking back to McLeodGanj

View of Bhagsu from Triund

To hike back to McLeodGanj, you can follow the Triund – Karthani Trail , on the southern side of Triund Hill. This trail will pass the Bhagsu Waterfall before reaching the centre of Bhagsu.

Note that the Triund – Karthani Trail is not as straightforward as the trail to hike up, but it is not so hard to follow with a little help from Maps.me.

This trail was my favourite part of the hike. It is not much frequented, the landscapes are amazing and I encountered plenty of sheep and goats along the way, which gave me some nice photo opportunities.

Sheep and goats on the Karthani Trail

Difficulty of the Trek to Triund

The Triund Trek is considered a moderate trek . It is not too difficult, but you will need an average fitness level to complete it.

The elevation at Triund is 2,875 m (9,432 ft), while McLeodGanj is at 2,082 m (6,831 ft), so you will ascend about 800 m (2,600 ft) during the hike. This takes a total of 4 to 6 hours and the trek covers about 10 km (6.2 mi) one way.

Although you can do this trek in one day (which is what I did and it is very doable), it will be easier if you camp at Triund and split the hike into 2 days.

If you decide to hike further to the Laka Glacier, you will have to hike up an additional 325 m (1,066 ft).

Best Time to Do the Triund Trek

The best time to trek to Triund is in the Summer, between the months of March and June . This is when the weather will be at its best and the views will be most clear. You can expect temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) at this time of the year.

July to September is the monsoon season. So this is not a good time to trek to Triund unless you don’t mind the rain and slipperiness.

The Winter lasts from October to February and it is possible to do the trek to Triund during this season too. Do note that there will be snow if you’re going in January or February.

Tips for Hiking to Triund

  • Make a loop rather than going down the same way as you came up (this is what most people do).
  • Use Maps.me to navigate easily.
  • Bring water , snacks and sunscreen , and wear comfortable shoes . I wore hiking boots, but this trek can also be done with sneakers.
  • Consider camping for a night to see the sunset/sunrise.

Where to Stay in McLeodGanj

There are plenty of places to stay in and around McLeodganj. You can opt for McLeodGanj itself, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

While McLeodGanj is the place where the Dalai Lama lives, Bhagsu is a 20-minute walk from here and it is quieter. Dharamkot is a 30-minute walk from Bhagsu and it is also quieter than McLeodGanj.

Although McLeodGanj is often referred to as Dharamshala , I would not stay in this city, as it is located 5 km (3.1 mi) downhill of McLeodGanj and it is far from the main tourist attractions.

I stayed in Bhagsu as well as in McLeodGanj while I was there, you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Shree Guest House ( ⭐ 8.3) : Shree Guest House was my favourite place to stay in the area. This guesthouse is located in a quiet area in McLeodGanj, just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the main street. The rooms are nice and clean, there’s a shared balcony, the wifi is good and Nadish, the owner, is amazing!
  • Hotel Norbu House (⭐ 9.3): If you’re looking for a more luxurious place to stay with a beautiful view, Hotel Norbu House is the place for you. This hotel is located in a quiet street, near the centre of McLeodGanj and it has all the amenities you might need.
  • Eevolve Dharamkot (⭐ 8.3): Located in Dharamkot, this eco hostel offers beautiful rooms and a garden. This is a great place to stay if you’re planning on staying in the area for a little longer and would like to enrol in yoga classes, for example.

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj: Final Thoughts

The trek to Triund is one of the most popular hikes in Dharamshala and it is easy to understand why. Not only are the landscapes beautiful, but this is also a trek that can easily be done independently.

All in all, this was a trek I really enjoyed, even though the sky wasn’t clear anymore by the time I reached Triund. If I would do it again, I would camp at Triund as this increases the chance of having a clear view.

I hope that this guide was clear and that you have found exactly what you were looking for. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions. I’m updating this post frequently.

My best friend and I wanted to set out on an adventure and decided to trek to Triund. This was our very first trekking experience and I'm so glad that I booked through Banbanjara. Our guide Raman was extremely hospitable patient and knowledgeable. We were the only ones to set up camp right at the top where the view was majestic. They made us very comfortable with clean tents and blankets. Served us hot tea on arrival, piping hot dinner at night and breakfast the following day. They even made us a bonfire to keep us warm when the temperature dropped at night. The sunrise and sunset views were worth the steep climb. The last kilometer to the top was tricky but we were under the able guidance of Raman who motivated us and kept us in high

High Peak point worthwhile

Certainly something that will make the effort to attain that high-peak point worthwhile. This journey's twists and turns are truly captivating. It comes highly recommended. All of the services were executed flawlessly.

Trek with my Wife

My wife and I decided to hike this trail, It's a fantastic trek for beginners. We hiked till we reached the halfway point 4.5 kilometres, which is marked by a tea kiosk. We'll try to finish the trek the following time!

Dharamsala's crown jewel

Triund Hill is Dharamsala's crown jewel, and it feels incredible to be up there. Thank you so much to the BanBanjara crew for such a great experience.

It was my first moderate trek in the rain. Some would say the rainy season is not good for trekking but we loved the weather. The movement of clouds over the mountains, and intermittent exposure to rain and sun made the view so clear when the clouds were gone It was mesmerizing.

Nitin Gupta

Amazing view, the trek was difficult compared to Laka Glacier but it was worth going. The sunset the snow the mountains are amazing experiences 🖤

Raghav Arora

It was an amazing experience. The new adventure got ticked. The views were so satisfying. Worth its experience. The guides were very supportive.

Triund & Laka glacier trek was my first solo trekking experience and I had really great trekking experience with Banbanjara. The organizers were really good at doing their responsibilities and the guide was so helpful and kind. Camping facilities and Food also were really good all 3 days.

Anjali Sharma

The trek was pretty good; yeah the number of people was quite lesser yet we enjoyed it to the fullest. Il went there without any experience but returned with some beautiful tales of the Himalayas. Banbanjara had arranged everything nicely, mainly the members of the Operation Department have guided and helped me a lot, from bookings to inquiries and similarly the during-trek queries.

Strength training tips

Triund trek is most famous as an easy trek but the Laka glacier trek which is just 5 km away from Triund top is much more challenging in comparison to the Triund trek. Once you will start moving ahead of the Triund top you will start realising that the gradient here is quite stiff than the Triund top trek gradient. So one can do the Triund trek easily and without any prior preparation but if you are planning to come on the Triund Laka glacier trek then we will recommend you to start preparing for the trek at least 15 days before the scheduled date of your trekking. I am providing some tips to prepare before the trek so that you can complete this trek easily and can enjoy it to your fullest.

During trekking, we use to walk for a long distance and altitude varies with every new step. So the common exercise which you have to d0 before coming to this trek is brisk walking. Set a target of 5-6 km and try to achieve it in 15 days. I am recommending some other common exercises which you can do to make your lower and upper body tougher.

Lower body strength training

During trekking, our lower body has to do the maximum work so training it before coming to trek is one of the most important tasks. For that, I am suggesting some exercise which you have to do for 45 seconds each with 15 seconds rest. Start with one set each and increase it to 3 sets daily.

Keep your upper body stiff and your hand either behind your head or stretch it straight in front of you at the shoulder lever. Now sit down without moving making any movement in the upper body and go up. Go slow and do it for 45 seconds. This will strengthen your quadriceps, calves, and hamstrings and will improve your flexibility to the lower body.

One leg lean squats

Now again keep your upper body and right leg stiff and sit on the left leg without making any movement to your upper body. Now go up and keep your left leg stiff and sit on your right leg. Go slow and keep repeating this for the next 45 seconds.

Keep your hands down, and upper body straight. Put your right leg forward and drop your body down without making any movement to your upper body and bending your knees. Do it 15 times and then switch your legs and again repeat it for the next 15 times. Lunges increase muscle mass to build up strength and tone your body, especially your core, butt, and legs.

Upper body strength training

As you have to carry your luggage on your own so it is equally important to train your upper body before coming to the Laka glacier trek. I am recommending some of the upper body exercises.

Pushups:- Try to do at least 5-7 pushups with three reputations daily. This will help you to strengthen your arms and shoulders and will prepare your shoulder and arms to carry weight.

Plank for at least 30 seconds:- Lie straight with your face toward the ground, now hold your body on your forearms and feet keeping your complete body straight. Try to hold in this position for at least 30 seconds. This will help you burn your belly fat and will strengthen your chest and shoulder.

Tricep Dip:- Sit down on your hip with legs straight touching the ground. Keep your hands 1feet behind your hip and try to lift your body. Keep doing it for 45 seconds. This exercise is to strengthen the upper body and increase the range of motion of the body.

Some pro tips

Do at least 10 minutes of warmup and stretching before and after exercising. And don’t sit or keep your body idle during the resting period. Keep moving your body this will keep your body warm and active and will also decrease the chance of cramping.

An interesting aspect of this trek is that it lies near the snowline, a mere trek of 13 km will take you to Laka Glacier. If you are looking for long-weekend trek, this is one of the most popular and beautiful trek that you can do in short duration. From July onwards the glacier starts to melt and during post monsoon period there is no snow at the glacier and you only see the moraines, whereas during pre-monsoon period (March to June) the glacier is full of snow and it is the best time to trek to Laka Glacier.

Your trek will commence at Bhagsu Nag, and from where the steep ascent towards Triund will begin. You will pass through Oak, Rhododendrons and deodar trees, till you reach a vast alpine meadow called Triund Top, from where you can spectacle the grandeur view of the Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar ranges. One of the best experiences of mylife, totally worth it. All the hardwork and challenges were worth it when we reached our destination. Just make sure to carry extra clothes as weather is very unpredictable and avoid taking too much plastic with you and make sure not to litter while on trek.

My experience of the Laka Glacier Trek

Photo of Tamanjeet Singh

The best trekking experience I have yet is the trek to the Laka Glacier. I have been to Mcleodganj twice in past but was unable to go to Triund due to snow. Triund is a very famous hilltop among trekkers. The trek starts from beautiful McLeodganj. The total distance of the trek is approximately 7 km which goes through steep rocky and stairy trails. The Triund top is at the foot of the Dhauladhar ranges and is at a height of 2850 meters. This time when I was planning, I heard for the first time about Snowline and Laka Glacier which is furthermore above Triund so I made up my mind to go beyond Triund.Laka Glacier is another 5 to 6km of a trek from the Triund top and the trail to Laka is so adventurous. It passes by Snowline and goes through very steep rocky paths, some plain mountain edges covered in snow, and small ascends and descends when crossing mountains. Laka Glacier is at a height of 3231 meters. This trek goes above the Laka glacier to the Lahesh cave and then to Indrahar pass and further to the Moon peak.

A quiet evening

This was captured at Laka Glacier. We were the only 7 people there that night including our guide and caretaker. It was so quiet and felt amazing to be far far away from the regular busy life of cities.

Tibetan prayer flags

I have seen this Tibetan flag so many times before but never gave a thought about them that why they are hanging everywhere in mountain areas, especially in Himachal. So this time I found out the meaning of these flags. These are the prayers flag with a Mantra written on them 'Om Mani Padme Hun'. The prayer flags are meant to encourage compassion, peace, strength, and wisdom. Prayer flags are hung outside with the strong belief that the wind can carry the prayers to the world for the benefit of all sentient beings. To know more about these Flags and Mantra please check my Instagram reel here: https://www.instagram.com/iamtamnjeet

Sunset on the horizon

The one thing we all get excited about in mountains is watching the sunset. This was captured from the top of Triund hill. It was the first time when I witnessed the sun disappear over the horizon, else all the other times I have seen the sun going down behind some buildings or mountains or any other objects.

A little more closer

It felt so exciting to know that we are so close to reaching the Laka Glacier. The moon peak that we saw from Mcleodganj market was just in front of us now.

Photo of My experience of the Laka Glacier Trek 6/10 by Tamanjeet Singh

Moon Peak is one of three peaks of the Dhauladhar ranges that can be clearly seen from the Triund top. And it is the only peak that can be seen from the Mcleodganj market too. It is located at an altitude of 15200 ft. This 45 km long trek to Moon Peak starts from McLeodganj and passes through rocky ascends and steep traverses. The trek also passes through Triund, Ilaqa Got (Laka Glacier), Lahesh Caves, and Indrahar Pass.

A moment with mighty mountains

A feeling of accomplishment is a paid-off to your hard work. No matter how long and tiring your path was, reaching the destination vanishes all the pain. The first thing I did when we reached the top was admiring the beauty around me. The huge mountains, deep valleys, freshening air, and wider sky.

A wild night

It was 2 or 2:30 am when I woke up inside my camp shivering from the cold and found that I was not covered well with the blanket. I was fixing my blanket and then I heard the sound of some heavy footsteps beside my camp on my left side and like someone touched the camp also (I am not sure if it was the wind that made the tent sound like someone touching or someone really touched it) and also a local shepherd dog came along with us on the top was barking continuously from the distance on my right. I had some weird feelings and wanted to know what is outside but I had no guts to peek out so keep laying inside and fell asleep later. Then in the morning, a girl from another camp mentioned the same that she too heard the footsteps around the same time at night. And then we later found the footprint of a black bear near our camps. That was the bear who crossed us at night.

Group picture

A moderate trek with some wild adventure was perfectly made for me. But, above all of these, the company matters, and I got the best travel buddies on this adventure and a very passionate guide who makes sure of our comfort and needs.I am on the first from the Left. Then Ankit with Aastha. Nischal (guide) is in the mid wearing a cap. Manjot with a snowball in his hand. Then Parvati and Shiv.
