Overview of junk boats.

Junk boats are traditional wooden vessels that incorporate century-old elements of ancient boats in Southeast Asia, typically in Vietnam. Most traditional junks came into operation between 2007 and 2019 and while there have been limited options for new boats and modern cruises added every year.

Halong bay tourist junk boats

These cruises are small and not as well-appointed as steel boats. Yet, you can still expect comfortable cabins, a wealth of must-try activities, and good safety standards. They are characterized by  distinctive wooden design with curved sails, intricate detailing, and timeless Oriental charm.

In fact, the bay, at the present time, is overwhelmed with high-end steel-hulled vessels and luxurious yachts; thus, seeking a good overnight junk boat is a quite daunting task. Those who are keen on larger cruises with a modern flair would overlook the enduring charm of these traditional boats. However, if you expect the most authentic cruise experience on Halong Bay, opting for the cruise remains the ultimate choice.

  • Why to choose this cruise type

Halong bay junk

Choosing a junk boat brings a unique and unforgettable cruise experience for you to fully admire the natural beauty and cultural richness of Halong bay.

  • Abundance of must-try activities: Embarking on the cruise allows you to ultimately soak up the mesmerizing scenery of floating villages and participate in typical activities such as cave exploration, swimming, fishing, and mountain climbing.
  • Cultural immersion: There is a blend of decent amenities and traditional design on the cruise. You have an opportunity to enjoy the charm of Vietnamese craftsmanship and hospitality while onboard.
  • A variety of itineraries: While upscale and newly launched vessels tend to exploit Halong bay and Lan Ha bay, wooden junks focus on itineraries to Halong bay and Bai Tu Long bay with classic and off-the-beaten-track excursions. The classic itineraries to Halong bay are suitable for first-time visitors with notable attractions like Titop island, Luon cave, and Sung Sot cave. Meanwhile, journeys to Bai Tu Long bay are best suited for those seeking the unspoiled beauty of remote areas such as Vung Vieng fishing village, Thien Canh Son cave, and Cong Do area.
  • Authentic Vietnamese cuisine: You will be mainly served Vietnamese food, local specialties, fresh seafood, and several international dishes. Some cruises also offer cooking classes to learn more about Vietnamese cuisine.
  • Good value for money: Most  cruises are budget-friendly with 3 to 4-star service standards. The prices are reasonable from only 126 USD/per pax for a 2D1n trip. Regarding higher class, it can cost 175-350 USD/per pax/one night.

” There are many cruises to HaLong Bay to choose from, and selecting one can be a challenge. This was a great choice for a few reasons. I can just say Bai Tu Long Bay was incredible. We immediately sailed out in a direction less-frequented, and for the next 2 days hardly saw another boat. The staff was outstanding. They all went “above & beyond.” And he was extremely knowledgeable about the area. A great combination of activity (kayaking, visiting a quiet island for swimming & having lunch) & free time on the boat. It is worth every penny and really lives up to expectations…”

From exploring hidden lagoons to kayaking through caves to witnessing traditional Vietnamese culture firsthand – there's something for everyone when it comes to taking a junk boat tour in Halong Bay!

What is the history of the Halong Bay Junk Boat in Indochina?

Halong Bay Junk Boat is a traditional Chinese sailing vessel that has been in use for centuries. The boat was first used by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was then adopted by the Vietnamese, who used it to traverse the waters of Halong Bay. The boat is constructed from wood and bamboo and is powered by a single sail. It has a flat bottom, allowing it to navigate shallow waters, and its hull is designed to be resistant to waves.

The Halong Bay Junk Boat has been used for many different purposes over the years. In its early days, it was used as a fishing vessel, but it has also been used as a merchant ship, transporting goods between ports and villages. During the Vietnam War, it was also used as a military vessel, with some boats even being equipped with guns. Today, Halong Bay Junk Boats are primarily used for tourism purposes, with visitors taking trips around Halong Bay on these traditional vessels.

The design of the Halong Bay Junk Boat has changed very little over time. It still features its original flat bottom design and single sail setup. However, modern versions of the boat have been outfitted with engines to make them more efficient and reliable for tourists who want to explore Halong Bay in comfort and style.

Halong Bay Junk Boats are an important part of Vietnamese culture and history. They are seen as symbols of strength and resilience in the face of adversity; this is why they have become so popular among tourists who want to experience something truly unique while visiting Vietnam.

The tradition of building these boats dates back centuries ago when skilled craftsmen would construct them using only local materials such as wood and bamboo. The process involves intricate carpentry work that requires great skill and patience; this makes each boat unique in its own way.

Today, there are still many skilled craftsmen who continue to build these vessels by hand using traditional methods passed down from generation to generation. This ensures that each boat retains its authentic look while also providing visitors with an unforgettable experience when they take a tour around Halong Bay on one of these beautiful vessels.

Halong Bay Junk Boats are not only an important part of Vietnam’s history but also serve as a reminder that we can all learn from our past mistakes in order to build a better future for ourselves and our children. These boats represent resilience in the face of adversity; they remind us that no matter how difficult life may be at times, we can always find strength within ourselves if we stay determined and keep pushing forward towards our goals no matter what obstacles may come our way along the way.

Where is the Halong Bay Junk Boat based?

The Halong Bay Junk Boat is based in the city of Halong, located in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. This city is situated on the northeastern coast of Vietnam and is home to some of the most breathtaking views in all of Southeast Asia. The city itself has a long history, dating back to the 13th century when it was first settled by Chinese traders.

The Halong Bay Junk Boat itself is an impressive vessel that has been designed to take tourists on a tour of this stunning area. It has two decks, each with its own unique features and amenities. On the upper deck, you will find comfortable seating areas for up to 20 passengers and a large open area for activities such as fishing or sunbathing. On the lower deck, there are cabins for up to 8 passengers with air conditioning and private bathrooms. There's also a kitchenette and dining area for meals during your journey.

The boat also features some luxurious amenities such as a hot tub, bar, massage room, library, and karaoke lounge. All these features make it perfect for those looking to experience Halong Bay in comfort and style!

The Halong Bay Junk Boat offers several different tours throughout the year including day trips and overnight stays. During your tour you will be able to explore some of the most beautiful parts of Halong Bay including Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, Cong Do Island and more! You'll get to see some amazing sights such as limestone karsts jutting out from emerald waters as well as floating fishing villages where locals still practice traditional methods of fishing. You'll also get to visit some interesting cultural sites such as caves filled with ancient drawings or temples dedicated to local deities.

During these cruises you'll be able to take part in activities such as trekking through lush jungles or visiting untouched islands where you can spot rare wildlife or swim in crystal clear waters.

No matter which type of cruise you choose, all Halong Bay Junk Boat Cruises are sure to provide an unforgettable experience that will stay with you for years to come! So if you're looking for a unique way to explore Vietnam's stunning natural beauty then why not book yourself onto one of these amazing cruises?

Can you swim in Halong Bay?

The answer is yes, but it's not recommended. Halong Bay is a beautiful natural wonder located in northern Vietnam. It's known for its stunning limestone karsts, emerald waters, and abundant marine life. But the bay can also be dangerous for swimming due to strong currents and unpredictable weather conditions.

Halong Bay is a popular destination for tourists who want to explore its many sights and attractions. The bay is also home to a number of fishing villages where visitors can experience traditional Vietnamese culture. But when it comes to swimming, the bay can be quite treacherous.

The currents in Halong Bay are strong and unpredictable, making it difficult to stay afloat or navigate the waters safely. The weather can also change quickly, with sudden storms that can make swimming even more dangerous. In addition, there are many rocks and other obstacles that make swimming difficult and potentially hazardous.

The best way to enjoy Halong Bay is from the safety of a boat or kayak. This will allow you to explore the area without risking your safety in the waters below. There are several tour companies that offer guided boat tours of the bay, which make for an excellent way to experience all that Halong Bay has to offer without having to worry about swimming in its treacherous waters.

If you do decide to swim in Halong Bay, it's important that you take all necessary precautions beforehand. Make sure you check the weather forecast before heading out on your trip and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for swimming in cold water conditions. It's also important that you bring along a life jacket or flotation device so that you have something to hold onto if you get into trouble while swimming in the bay's strong currents or if unexpected storms arise during your visit.

It's also important that swimmers stay within designated areas when they're out on their trip as there are many hidden rocks and other underwater obstacles that could pose a danger if not avoided properly. It's also important to avoid swimming alone as this increases your risk of getting into trouble if something goes wrong while out on the water.

In summary, while it is possible to swim in Halong Bay, it's not recommended due to its strong currents and unpredictable weather conditions which make it difficult and potentially dangerous for swimmers who aren't experienced enough or don't take proper precautions before heading out on their trip. For those looking for an unforgettable experience exploring this natural wonder from a safe distance, taking a guided boat tour of Halong Bay is highly recommended instead!

What is the best time to visit Halong Bay?

If you're looking for a peaceful, serene experience, then the best time to visit Halong Bay is during the winter months. The temperatures are cooler and there are fewer tourists, so you can enjoy the beauty of this stunning bay without having to worry about crowds. The winter months also offer some of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Vietnam.

On the other hand, if you're looking for an adventure-filled trip, then summer is probably your best bet. During this time, Halong Bay is bustling with activity and there are plenty of things to do. From kayaking and snorkeling to visiting local fishing villages and exploring hidden caves, there's something for everyone in Halong Bay during summertime. Plus, you'll be able to take advantage of longer days and warmer temperatures while still enjoying all that this beautiful bay has to offer.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Halong Bay, it's important to remember that weather can be unpredictable in Vietnam. Be sure to pack accordingly and check forecasts before heading out on your trip so that you can be prepared for any unexpected changes in weather conditions.

Overall, when it comes down to it, there really isn't a "best" time to visit Halong Bay - it all depends on what kind of experience you're looking for! If you want peace and serenity then winter may be your best bet; but if adventure is more your style then summertime could be just right for you! Either way, one thing is certain - no matter when you decide to go, your trip will be filled with memories that will last a lifetime!

What does a Halong Bay Junk Cruise itinerary look like?

Well, the itinerary of your Halong Bay Junk Cruise will depend on which cruise you choose. Generally speaking, most cruises will include some combination of sightseeing, kayaking, swimming, and exploring caves. Some cruises may also offer activities such as fishing or cooking classes.

Your first day on the cruise will usually begin with you boarding the junk boat in the early morning. Once you board your boat, you'll be welcomed by your crew and given a safety briefing. Then it's time to set sail! As you journey through Halong Bay, take in all its beauty - from its towering limestone karsts to its emerald waters - while your crew serves up delicious Vietnamese cuisine for lunch.

In the afternoon, you'll have plenty of opportunities to get out and explore. Depending on which cruise you choose, this could mean kayaking around some of the smaller islands or swimming in one of Halong Bay's many secluded coves. You may even have a chance to explore some of Halong Bay's famous caves!

As evening approaches, your boat will anchor at one of Halong Bay's many islands so that you can enjoy dinner under the stars. After dinner is finished and it's time to turn in for the night, your boat will move to another spot so that you can wake up to a new view each morning.

The following day is usually spent exploring more areas of Halong Bay and taking part in various activities such as fishing or cooking classes (depending on which cruise you choose). After lunch is served onboard once again (yum!), it's time to head back towards port where your junk cruise ends after an unforgettable experience!

So there you have it - a typical itinerary for a Halong Bay Junk Cruise! Whether it's kayaking around small islands or exploring caves and coves - there is something for everyone on this amazing journey through Vietnam's most beautiful bay!

How much does it cost to go on a Halong Bay Cruise?

The price of a Halong Bay cruise depends on several factors including the length of the trip, the type of boat, and the number of people going on the trip. Generally speaking, a one-day trip will cost around $50 per person, while a two-day trip may cost up to $150 per person. The price can also vary depending on what type of boat you choose. Luxury boats with air-conditioning and private cabins will be more expensive than traditional wooden boats without air-conditioning or private cabins.

In addition to the cost of the boat, there are also other costs associated with going on a Halong Bay cruise such as food and drinks, entrance fees for attractions, and tips for guides and crew members. Food and drinks can range from $10-$20 per person depending on what you order. Entrance fees for attractions such as caves or beaches can range from $5-$15 per person. Tips for guides and crew members are usually around 10% of the total cost of your trip but this is optional.

When planning your Halong Bay cruise, it's important to factor in all these costs so you know exactly how much money you'll need to bring with you. It's also important to book your trip in advance as prices tend to increase during peak season (May-August) when demand is high.

Overall, going on a Halong Bay cruise is an unforgettable experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime! With careful planning and budgeting, it's possible to enjoy this amazing destination without breaking the bank!

  • The two night cruise stops by Tien Ong Cave . Its thousands-year-old stalagmites and stalactites, some resembling Tien Ong (Fairy Godfather), make this landscape quite a sight to behold. There are also artifacts and human bones from the 10,000 BC.
  • Paradise Explorer anchors by Deu Cave to give you one hour of lunchtime before continuing to Cua Van fishing village . Take this opportunity to learn your way around the local lifestyle and customs; kayaking or bamboo boat rowing are also welcome.

The last stop is Sung Sot Cave . And while cruisers stayed in the lounge and restaurant to enjoy their breakfast after returning from Sung Sot, the cruise would pass by Dau Go, Thien Cung Cave, and Trong Mai Islet.

Tips to Plan The Best Junk Boat Halong Bay Cruise to Make Your Trip More Enjoyable

1. tour packages to choose.

Coming to Halong Bay, you must go on a cruise once in your life

Coming to Halong Bay, you must go on a cruise once in your life

Trip durations are a concerning matter for most tourists.

While there is no shortage of available options, the 2-day-1-night packages remain highly favored due to their well-balanced Halong Bay junk boat price and time. Indeed, you can fully take in Halong’s notable highlights without pressuring your budget.

On another note, those with more generous savings can aim higher and pick the 3-day-2-night plan for more in-depth explorations into the less-visited areas. With such a broad timeframe, passengers will find it much easier to pick their own pace and truly appreciate Halong’s serene water, fishing villages, and majestic limestone shapes.

Covering Halong in limited time through day tours is still possible, though not recommended. The array of experiences and attractions offered by the bay needs time to truly sink in; hence, with the hurried pacing often seen in day tours, you will likely end up rushing from one place to another without learning anything special.

2. Essentials to Pack

Cruisers must prove their identity and show their passports to local authorities before boarding. Leaving these critical papers at home means the operators cannot allow you to get on their cruises.

Stack your clothes according to the trips' duration (day tours, 2-day-1-night, or 3-day-2-night), environment and weather mist, and types of activities you will likely participate in.

Since the backpacks are not exactly roomy, be selective. For instance, there is no need to bring extra hiking gear if you only engage in water-based activities during the low season.

Preparing your luggage and have a fresh mind to start the journey

Preparing your luggage and have a fresh mind to start the journey

Sun Protection

Not every cruiser can easily get used to Vietnam's strong, scorching sun, especially during summer peaks. Hence, bring along quality waterproof sunscreen to reapply every two hours after stepping into the water - and for smaller children, factor 50 sunblocks will be highly recommended.

Paradise Sails is highly rated by travelers and has great return potential

Cash or Credit Cards

On some cruises, extra services and snacks are not included in the upfront price, so do not go onboard empty-handed: you must bring along at least one payment form, such as credit, debit card, or cash.

Cash is the safest option since it will always be accepted. Also, to avoid unnecessary hassles, ensure the currency is US dollars or Vietnamese VND. Here at Paradise Vietnam, we serve tea breaks (cookies, banana cakes, etc.) and canape parties in between for free, but we still highly recommend you prepare some cash or cards.

Our suggestion is to take luxury limousines or shuttle buses if you set off from Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa, or any northern-Vietnam destinations. Meanwhile, those departing from southern or central Vietnam should consider night buses for optimal comfort. Notably, luxury shuttle buses available at Paradise Vietnam ensure door-to-door transfers and are more well-equipped than regular shuttle buses with ambient, relaxing light, free Wi-Fi, and free water bottles.

Railways give passengers the best opportunities to soak the landscape’s breathtaking view at slower paces. You may consider sleeper cabins or soft/hard seats, local trains, or luxury tourist trains.

Halong Bay Day Trip: The Best Vietnam Junk Boat Cruise

A three and a half hour drive from the bustle of the city of Hanoi lies a peaceful set of 1,600 islands and islets, Halong Bay. This bay has been the backdrop to many movies, including the Oscar winning Indochine, and taking a Vietnamese junk boat cruise on the bay has also been featured on many things to do before you die  lists, including my own.

So, when my travels landed me in  Hanoi there wasn’t even a question that I’d spend one day taking a seven hour round trip van ride to witness one of Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Gulf of Tonkin.

halong bay cruise junk boat

What is Halong Bay

If you have ever wanted to travel to Neverland, then Halong Bay may be just the right place for you. Located in Quang Nihm Province, a cruise along Halong Bay is one of the most popular (and best) tourist attractions in northern Vietnam. Thousands of karsts and isles, tropical evergreen biosystem, and a seemingly endless emerald sea creates one heck of a magnificent view.

Most of the area consists of picturesque limestone islands, only a small portion of which is inhabited. But that’s not all! Halong Bay is also home to many endangered species of animals, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage sit and has been the set of numerous films, including the 2015 movie “Pan”.

The name Ha Long means ‘descending dragon’ and when you see this surreal place the mystical creature will arise in your imagination.

Halong Bay Day Trip Cruise

Many people choose to stay one night, or several, cruising on a Vietnamese junk boat in Halong Bay, but if you don’t have that much time don’t think you can’t do it in one day! We only had the time for a Halong Bay day trip tour from Hanoi—we needed to get back to the city to indulge in more weird street food in Hanoi —and even though it was a long day, it was beyond worth it. Besides a twelve hour day is like working a Friday at my Italian restaurant , except this one would be minus a backed up grease trap, complaining employees and dirty dishes. Easy Peasy.

Tips for Choosing the Best Cruise

You can explore Halong Bay with either a limited budget or with luxury comfort, and you can arrive there by car, minibus or even a helicopter—the options really are endless. But, if you want to have a relaxing experience, make memorable photos, or just spend time with pleasure – choose the tour wisely.

  • How much are you willing to pay? Your budget can determine the type of cruise you get. If you are opting for an overnight cruise, it is recommended to book higher cabins with big windows or balconies for better views. Whereas, with a day trip what is important is that you are spending enough time on the water cruising Halong Bay and that the food being served is delicious.
  • How long are you going to cruise? There are one to four-day cruises. Many travelers recommend taking a two-day cruise since one day feels too short for them and three+ days are better if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture. But, like I said before, it is totally doable in one day! So, if your option is a day trip from Hanoi or not going at all, choose option one!
  • Halong Bay: This destination is the most crowded spot, also it has lots of ancient caves.
  • Bai Tu Long Bay: This spot is much more peaceful, but there are no such great caves as in the former.
  • Bai Tu Long Bay + Cat Ba Island. This is a small island near Halong Bay with numerous bars, restaurants, hostels, and recreational activities.
  • #Tip 2: Avoid Scams: There are many scams built around booking your cruise in Halong Bay. So, it is better to book a cruise either with your hotel or online in advance (see recommendations below).
  • #Tip 3: Do the Homework: To avoid disappointment, double-check everything that is included/excluded in your cruise. During the peak season, the cruises are more expensive, so it is better to book in advance. Many of the cruises offer special menus for vegetarians or people with different food preferences, just notify your cruise provider in advance.

What to Expect on Your Day Trip to Halong Bay

Your day trip to Halong Bay will definitely leave a trace in your memory. With the isles of different shapes, pretty beaches and mystical villages, it will be hard to forget! This is the story of my experience:

A long 12+ hour day was about to begin.

We left the city early in the morning, heading towards the bay when a traffic jam stopped us in our tracks. Two buses collided and caused a halt in every direction on the main route. We maneuvered out of the way to take the longer route. Add an hour to that previously mentioned twelve.

The driver had warned us prior to arriving to Ha Long Bay, that the weather is typically rainy or misty with the slimmest chance of escaping one of the two. Especially on this particular week where every tour he led resulted in the guests ducking into the covered portion of the boat instead of enjoying the view from the top deck. There goes the photo ops.

But, when we got there is was cloudy and that’s it. There really was no sun, but we weren’t getting wet. I’ll take it.

We boarded our junk boat, which was a touch smaller than the Hong Kong junk boat that had taken me through Victoria Harbour. Though on this tour there were only a total of six people, the entire boat was reserved for three guests and three crew.

After a brief introduction to the boat, lunch was served as we made our way towards the islets of Ha Long Bay. We would not be going hungry on this tour. We were served a cucumber salad, s pring rolls, shrimp, fried pork with sesame, squid, rice and a whole fish that the crew deboned table side. There was enough food to feed a dozen passengers, not just our quaint little group.

Halong bay cruise food

After enjoying lunch, we climbed to the spacious top deck and relaxed on a lounge chair to marvel at Ha Long Bay, a name that means ‘bay of the descending dragons’.

According to legend, when the Vietnamese were fighting off foreign invaders, the gods sent a family of dragons to assist in defending their country. These dragons began spitting out jewels that turned into the islands and islets that now are scattered around the bay.  The may even be prettier than diamonds!

Junk Boat Halong Bay

Along the route we passed through a collection of floating homes, though nobody actually lives in them anymore. The former tenants were moved to the mainland in order to protect the environment. Although you can still see the fisherman out on the bay, working on their small boats, sometimes with their children in tow.

Before finishing this jaw-dropping tour of Ha Long Bay the boat stopped at the Dao Go, a three chambered cave. There were 90 steep steps to climb in order to witness the hundreds of stalactites falling down from the roof, which in some areas was 82 feet high. I had mixed feelings about the rainbow colored lights enhancing certain formations.

It made the natural beauty of Dao Go seem more like an amusement park attraction. But, there was still no denying that it is a breathtaking part of the world.

Heading back towards our starting point, Peter and I were able to catch an essential selfie, j ust a couple minutes before the sprinkles of rain started. Thank you mother nature for cooperating.

3 of the Best Halong Bay Day Trip Cruises Halong Bay One Day Escape with Lunch on the Boat This is the cruise that my husband and I took. It was a small-group tour in a comfortable minivan from Hanoi. Halong Luxury Full Day Trip – Limousine Van and Expressway If you want something a little more luxurious, then you can have the opportunity to get a luxury day trip in a group of 12 or fewer people. It includes a newer air-conditioned boat, more than 10 dishes of traditional Vietnamese food, and a pleasant atmosphere—what can be better? Tourists are offered an optional stop at the water cave of Hang Luon. Insurance, entrance, and sightseeing tickets are included in the price. Kayaks can also be rented for an additional fee! Round-Trip Halong Bay with Transfers A comfortable shuttle bus transfers you to Halong Bay. You will have 4,5 hours of cruising through the waters, hiking to Dau Go Island, exploring Heavenly Cave, and kayaking in Ba Hang Village. Don’t forget to take some food with you, because their lunch is a light one. Note: If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, it’s a better idea to get a longer cruise. Viator offers a highly rated tours.

With its natural beauty, recreational activities, fresh seafood, ancient caves and unique flora, taking Halong Bay day trip should be one for the memory books. If you haven’t yet added this breathtaking place to your bucket list, don’t waste another minute!

The Ha Long Bay looks like fairy tales. It’s so incredibly beautiful and mysterious. I like it the way you described it and the photos you’ve shared. Thanks for that.

It is a place that fairy tales are made of!!

This topic reminds me with my journey in Dubai on one of the most luxury yachts.

I went on a 3 day 2 night trip to Bai Tu Long Bay with Treasure Junk tours (located in Hanoi). It’s a lot cleaner and quieter than Halong Bay and the tour was AMAZING with all the activities included in the tour. Staff and Tour Guide were very accommodating. The food incredibily delicious and the boat was spotlessly clean. Probably the best tour I did in all of Vietnam

Thanks for sharing this tip! Next time I am back in Vietnam I will check out Bai Tu Long Bay so I can do a comparison :)

That looks very good. Vietnam could be a next stop :)

Hey there, the sweet stories shared about Ha Long Bay Vietnam are too sweet to believe, unless one has embarked on the real visit. The general belief about the origin of Ha Long Bay is in itself extremely interesting. Thanks a lot for sharing these pictures and review about this magnificent world wonder. I have just read through a fellow Ha Long Bay cruiser’s review of this cruise and would generally agree with the comments. Best Regards, Julia Miller.

Thanks for making this blog. I am going to Vietnam next year with my family. I am super excited after reading this blog. 🤗

I recently had the most incredible experience with yacht hire in Sydney! The city’s stunning harbor and iconic landmarks truly come to life from the deck of a luxury yacht.

Wow, that sounds absolutely amazing! Yacht hire in Sydney must have been a breathtaking experience with the stunning harbor and iconic landmarks. I can only imagine the incredible views from the deck of a luxury yacht.

Halong Bay Junk Cruise

2 days | glide across the emerald waters of vietnam's halong bay on a junk boat.

halong bay cruise junk boat

Prepare to be whisked away from the cosmopolitan streets of Hanoi to the serene landscape of the World Heritage-listed Halong Bay. Cast away on a traditional-style boat and set sail through hundreds of limestone karsts that rise dramatically from the emerald waters of the bay. Sit back, relax and soak up this epic landscape while enjoying scrumptious meals cooked on board. Relax on deck with friends, chat to the friendly crew, meet the locals as they row between boats or explore myriad hidden caves by kayak. This short trip is the perfect way to add a few days of well-deserved relaxation onto any Vietnam adventure.

Trip overview

  • Experience the natural wonder of thousands of limestone karsts that rise from the bay on a cruise through this World Heritage site
  • Sail back in time with an overnight stay on a traditional-style wooden boat, and awake to the unique misty morning sights of this strange paradise of green waters and rocky islands
  • Feast on a sumptuous meal as the boat anchors in the heart of the bay, then take to the deck to see the stars and moon illuminate the water and peaks
  • Halong Bay is one of Vietnam’s most iconic sights, and this must-see must be seen on a classic junk cruise
  • On a two full day, efficient but comprehensive extension, you can experience staying overnight on Halong Bay.
  • As this trip stays overnight on the boat there is somewhat less time for local interaction, but take the time to relax and enjoy the spectacular views.
  • This trip is operated by one of our local partners in Vietnam and runs on a join-in basis. You will join in with other travellers, who have potentially booked on a different trip, or through other companies.

Xin Chao! Welcome to Vietnam. A welcome pack containing a welcome letter, your trip itinerary, relevant tickets, a feedback card and general information on the country will be waiting for you at your hotel. Please ask your hotel's receptionist for the Intrepid welcome pack upon arrival. You may be able to leave your main luggage in Hanoi (please check with your hotel), so we recommend you only take a small bag with a change of clothes and essential travel items. Your Short Break Adventure starts at 8:30- 08:45 am, or from your alternate hotel located in Hanoi's Old Quarter (advised prior to departure), between 08:00am - 08:30 am. You will also be joined by other travellers taking the boat cruise. Travel by minibus for 3.5 hours to Halong Bay. Journey through the early morning streets of Hanoi on the way to Halong Bay, seeing steam rising from roadside eateries as breakfast is prepared and motorbikes weaving their way through the steadily increasing traffic. Leaving the city behind, drive through the countryside to the dock where this Halong Bay adventure truly starts. Climb aboard a traditional junk-style boat – with its beautiful woodwork and beaming crew – and venture out into the emerald waters of the bay. Open water soon disappears as the boat glides through often misty waters and past limestone peaks jutting dramatically out of the water. Sit down to a mouth-watering lunch and take in the scenery of what is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The area of about 1,500 square kilometres is dotted with innumerable beaches and grottos, created over thousands of years by waves and wind. Even in the rain the bay takes on a mystic quality. After lunch, you will have the chance to explore Surprise Cave, stretching your legs for an included cave walk. Access to Surprise Cave is via staircases. Once inside the cave the pathways are a little uneven and slippery. The captain will find a calm spot, so soak up the sun on the top deck or go kayaking to see the karsts up close. Everyone will be issued with water buoyancy vests.

Another delicious meal awaits after the sun goes down. Then sit under the beautiful starry skies before drifting off to sleep to the sounds of gentle waves lapping at the hull.

Overnight boat (1 night)

There is an option for swimming from Ti Top Island beach during the warmer months. Swimming in the bay from the boats is not permitted. Kayaking is not permitted within designated areas in the bay.

Rise this morning to the tranquil beauty of the bay. Perhaps even wake early for a Tai Chi class on the top deck. Spend the morning exploring secluded areas of the bay. Around noon the junk returns to the dock and the journey towards Hanoi begins. You will be transferred by boat to the mainland where your vehicle will be waiting.

The journey back to Hanoi takes around 3.5 hours. Your Halong Bay Junk Cruise adventures ends on arrival in Hanoi (approximately 1.30pm) where you will be dropped off at your Hanoi Old Quarter hotel listed below, or as nominated.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay (or Ha Long Bay) in Vietnam is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking places on the planet. In 1994 it was added to the list of UNESCO Heritage Sites. In 2011 the magnificent landmark of Vietnam was declared one of the "New Seven Natural Wonders of The World" beating serious "competitors" like Vesuvius Volcano in Italy, Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and even Baikal , the deepest lake in the world.

Local people have a very colorful story about creation of the bay. It is told that once upon a time, when ancestors fought with the Chinese, Gods sent dragons to help Vietnamese warriors. Trying to make a barrier, these fearsome creatures spitted precious stones that turned into islands. These islands created a wall that protected Vietnamese people from their aggressors. Dragons liked the rocky islands and decided to leave them behind after the war. Vietnamese named the place, where Mother Dragon landed, Ha-Long, which means "a place where the dragon descended into the sea".

Halong Bay

Halong Bay area is not just the bay, but also 120 kilometers of a shoreline, as well as over 3 thousand islands bathing in the emerald water. Over a thousand islands have their own names.

Almost all islands of Halong Bay are rocky, and there is a countless number of caves and grottos of all sizes and shapes, filled with small waterfalls, stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the caves became a tourist attraction. Lit up with colorful lights, they look like fairy tale underground castles.

This peculiar shape of the mountains is caused by rainwater working its way through the limestone. Year after year heavy tropical rains washed out limestone, carving magical shapes and creating caves and grottos. Geologists call this phenomenon a tower karst. There are other tower karst formations around the world, such as in Madagascar and in China near Guilin city. However, unlike any other place, land formations of Halong Bay are standing in the water, and ocean waves continue carving the shoreline, deepening caves, and changing face of cliffs and grottos.

Inside the cave

Hang Dau Go cave is one of the most famous sites of Halong Bay. Exactly 90 steps make a stairway to the cave entrance, where one can find numerous rocks of most peculiar shapes. A narrow wall divides the cave, creating 2 chambers. At the end of the cave, there is a well with a drinking water surrounded by ancient walls. Khai Din, the penult emperor of Vietnam, visited this place in 1917 and left his autograph on one of the walls.

Another cave called Kuang Han sets a new record in depth — it is 1300 meters deep. No wonder that it is called "the tunnel cave"...

One of the grottos is famous for its acoustic phenomenon: when the wind is blowing through numerous stalactites and stalagmites, one can hear distant drums from the inside of the cave. What if it's the echo of the ancient war between Chinese, Vietnamese and the dragons?

Stanislav Sedov will tell you a few words about the photo shoot.

It is impossible to photograph Halong Bay from the shore. This is why my colleague Dima hired a boat tour in advance. One of my childhood dreams was to sail away in a junk, so here we were — making my dream come true.

There are several travel agencies who offer boat tours in the bay. Halong Bay and the islands are "privatized" by these companies. Depending on the length of your trip (one or more nights) and a boat company of your choice, you end up going to different parts of the bay.

Halong Bay

The boats vary in size and occupancy. The smallest one (they are really not that small) can take only 2 passengers and a crew. A larger boat can take 20 to 140 people. What a "cruise ship"! We didn't want a crowd, so Dima was looking for a small boat for two. Those type of vessels are usually reserved for newly weds, so it was very hard to find accommodation with separate beds. Well, Dima found it :)

After a short preparation, we finally sailed out of Hon Gai port and set our course to the Halong Bay. I was slightly disappointed by the fact that famous scarlet sails of all junks were a fake. However, every time we needed the bright spot in our photo, our captain asked nearby boats to open the sails and they did.

A two-day boat trip includes caves, sea kayaking, visit to the floating village and romantic dinner for two on the uninhabited island. Highly recommended! You won't be disappointed.

However, the main attraction of this trip was a sight of thousands rocks of all shapes and sizes, emerging from crystal clear ocean water hundreds of meters high.

Sunrise over Halong Bay

We invite you to fly with us over this natural wonder!

It goes without saying that Halong Bay is main and most beautiful landmark of Vietnam. To tell you the truth, there is a story or a legend about every corner of Halong Bay. This is why it's time to stop reading and turn our eyes to the legendary Dragon legacy, famous natural wonder of Vietnam from a bird's eye view.

Absolutely lovely! I was a chaplain in Vienam in 1968-69 in I Corps [Quang Tri, Phu Bai, Hue, etc]. I returned in the late 1990s with my wife who is improving the quality of nursing care and education in Vietnam. We visited Ha Long Bay and were just breathless...the spiritual quality of such natural beauty cannot be matched. Thank you for your exquisite photography! We recommend everyone to make Ha Long Bay the first priority on your trip to Vietnam...then go to Hue and Nha Trang.

This does not look like the VietNam that I visited in 1968 and 1969. What part of VietNam is this? Considering that when I was there I was in 1V corps. Better known as the Mekong Delta. I have often thought of returning but for some reason have not.So much for time healing all wounds.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
