A Safari River Float in La Fortuna/Arenal

A unique way to see some of Costa Rica’s best wildlife is on a river float tour. Many animals are attracted to water sources. Gently coasting down the river lets you sneak up on them in their natural habitat. In this post, we’ll tell you all about a fun safari river float trip we took in La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano. It goes down a long section of the Penas Blancas River. We’ll also share how you can plan an excursion like this for yourself.

Scenery, River Float Tour Arenal

We did this tour while staying near downtown La Fortuna in Costa Rica’s Northern Highlands. This area is famous for the cone-shaped Arenal Volcano, but also has many other activities like hiking, hanging bridges , adventure tours, and even cultural tours.

La Fortuna is about 2.5 hours from both of Costa Rica’s international airports, SJO near San Jose and LIR in Liberia.

For the river float tour, we headed east from La Fortuna. It was just a short drive (about 30 minutes) to a river called the Penas Blancas.

This river flows north, merging with the Fortuna River, and its waters eventually flow into Nicaragua.

The safari float tour travels along 5.6 miles (9 km) of the Penas Blancas River and just a half mile (about one km) of the Fortuna River.

Setting Off

On the ride to the river put in, we passed large agricultural fields of pineapple, papaya, and yucca. Our guide, Fauricio, told us some cool facts about each crop.

After a little time to use the restroom and get on our life jackets, it was time to push off the rocks and head down the river.

Pushing off, river float tour La Fortuna

With a short safety talk from Fauricio, we felt at ease about our responsibilities. We would be on a large inflatable raft, with the guide leading the way. We would be asked to paddle occasionally, but mostly we could enjoy the ride along the calm, yet swift, river.

Our raft and paddles were the same type used in more extreme whitewater rafting tours. Although we wouldn’t be getting jolted around on this river, we still put some of our belongings in the company’s dry bags, just in case.

Tip: There are definitely some things you’ll want to bring on this tour to make yourself more comfortable. See our list at the end of this post.

The Beautiful Penas Blancas River

Setting off from the bank, the first thing you’ll notice during the safari float are the beautiful surrounds.

The Penas Blancas River has many lofty trees hanging over the water. The thick canopy filters the sunlight and creates almost a tunnel of jungle around you. There are birds calling in the trees, and smaller streams trickling into the larger river.

Tall trees and thick rainforest, river float tour

The size of the river varies, but overall is about 40-60 feet (12-18 meters) wide. Our guide, Fauricio, also told us that it can be anywhere from five to 25 feet (1.5-7.6 meters) deep, depending on water levels. With more rain, the river runs faster, but is still not very rough. This makes is a great spot for a gentle float tour.

What You’ll See

As we floated down the water, Fauricio pointed out different things. Many were easy to spot like ducks, kingfishers, and iguanas. But he had a great eye for some harder to spot things as well.

At one point, he asked us to paddle backwards and slow the boat to a stop. Then he said, “Look right above you.”

We had to squint to understand what we were looking at. But sure enough, on the underside of a branch, was a family of small bats. They were very camouflaged, blending into the brown background almost perfectly. Fauricio explained that these were long-nosed bats and that they are important for the ecosystem because they eat a lot of mosquitoes!

In addition to wildlife, we learned about the surrounding environment. Fauricio told us about many of the tree species along the river, including the balsa and rubber. We also learned about some interesting plants like the broad-leafed tabacon and various types of banana.

Wildlife Highlights

Although it was really interesting to learn about the plants, local weather patterns, and indigenous groups of Costa Rica, most people take the safari float trip for the wildlife viewing. And for this, it did not disappoint.

Sloth seen on river float tour

Some highlights were seeing several families of howler monkeys, a mother sloth and her baby really close up (picture above), and crocodiles on four different occasions.

Howler monkey on Penas Blancas River

One crocodile was at least eight feet (2.4 meters) long, while the rest were smaller. Our son (five-years old at the time) was very happy to see these and even happier that they were shy and scared of us.

Interesting birds we saw included the Anhinga, Amazon Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Whistling Ducks, Buff-rumped Warbler, and many Mangrove Swallows.

Agricultural Demonstrations

After a couple of hours on the Penas Blancas River, we drifted into the Fortuna River. At this point, the river was wider and had less of a canopy, but was still very similar.

Shortly after, we came to the spot where we’d get off the boat.

Here, we climbed a set of steps to find a small farm and outdoor dining room. Once Faurico and the driver hauled up the raft, he joined us again to teach us about some traditional crops.

The first thing we learned was how to juice raw sugar cane using an old-fashioned hand-crank press.

Our son had a great time turning the handle as we all watched the sugary water pour out. We then got to taste it. The adults in the group tried it along with some guaro, a local spirit made from sugar cane.

Fauricio taught us a traditional drinking chant, in Spanish, as a way to say cheers!

Next, we were shown some cacao plants growing in the yard. Fauricio took one of the strange looking pods off the small tree and briefly explained how chocolate is made from the seeds.

We then got to grind some of the dried cacao and mix it into a traditional drink. This drink was reserved for only the most important indigenous leaders at one time.

Traditional Snack

Finally, we got to sit down for a traditional snack of handmade tortillas, cheese, and roasted plantains. These tasted great after building up an appetite on the river. We also enjoyed some local coffee and fruit juice.

One of the highlights of the snack was the fact that the chickens, ducks, and turkeys in the yard apparently love the plantain skins. Our son Sam had the time of his life flinging scraps to them on the other side of the fence.

River float tour things to do kids

Minimum Age

Children need to be at least 3-years old.

If you have children younger than 3, we recommend the Cano Negro boat tour . This is on a larger, sturdy pontoon boat.

What to Bring

It can be sunny along the river. We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera, sandals or sneakers, and quick-dry clothing. Binoculars also would be handy to see high up in the canopy, especially if you’re interesting in bird watching.

You don’t need a bathing suit since you won’t be swimming.

Our biggest question was if it was okay to bring our large (expensive) SLR camera. It turns out it was completely fine; we just made sure to keep it strapped around our neck the whole time. We also used our cell phone to take pictures and videos.

We have been to La Fortuna many times during our years living in Costa Rica, and the safari float tour along the Penas Blancas River was one of our family’s all-time favorite activities. Not only is it a great way to see some amazing wildlife, but the boat ride along the river is fun and not stressful at all. If you are planning activities in La Fortuna, we would highly recommend it.

Peñas Blancas Safari Float: Easy Wildlife Watching from La Fortuna

July 17, 2024 By Sammi 27 Comments

One of the best tours in La Fortuna to see wildlife is a river safari float ride. It takes no effort as the tour is sitting on an inflatable raft, floating down a slow moving river with a guide who points out animals along the way.

From La Fortuna , the most popular safari river safari tour is the Peñas Blancas safari float, only a 30 minute drive. This river runs through the Tilaran Mountain Range and a good portion of it has very calm water, perfect for a leisurely safari float ride. It’s an incredible place to see monkeys, caimans, reptiles and birds while floating down a beautiful lush river.

Prices are in USD unless quoted otherwise. There are affiliate links in this post.

Fast Facts About the Peñas Blancas Safari Float

Half day tour. Pick up is ~730-8 AM. Return is around 11 – 11:15 AM.

Difficulty level: easy. Little walking required. Must be able to sit upright on an inflatable raft for ~2 hours.

Minimum age for this tour is 5 years.

What to bring: mosquito repellent, hat, sunscreen, camera, waterproof backpack and wear comfortable clothing. Closed toed shoes not mandatory, can wear sandals.

What’s included: roundtrip transportation from La Fortuna, bilingual English/Spanish guide, equipment, snacks (fruit juice and local snacks) and bottled water.

Peñas Blancas Safari Float

We got picked up at 8 AM and not long after, we were floating down a river as the drive to Rio Penas Blancas takes just around 30 minutes from La Fortuna downtown. The beauty about this tour is that you are in a raft, not a boat with an engine so you can get closer to the animals without disturbing them and you won’t hear the constant roaring of an engine down the river.

And without the loud sound of a motor, you feel like you’re miles deep into the jungle as you only hear birds chirping, monkeys howling and the river running all around you.

Photo of a river surrounded by green forest, there is a yellow raft with people sitting in it, in the background is a blue raft with people

Here are some photos of the river and animals we saw on the Peñas Blancas safari float tour

As we glided down the river, Hugo, our guide pointed out the first animal of the day: a heron.

Juvenile Bare Throated Heron

Even though I brought my 400 m lens with an extender on a Canon 80d, we were able to get super close to the heron with spooking him because we were on a raft. We weren’t more than 6 feet away from this guy!

And that was how it was for the entire boat trip. We got so close to some White Faced Monkeys (who are incredibly curious and smart), that we thought they were going to jump in the raft to steal our cameras!

Photo of a white face capuchin monkey on a tree looking at the camera with a baby on its back

It was a perfect day out on the river. Sunny but a little cloudy so the sun wasn’t shining on our faces the whole time. Not very windy so the river was very calm. The water glowed green from the reflection of the trees towering over us, providing incredible scenery the whole way.

RIo-Penas-Blancas-Safari-Float

We were also lucky to see a caiman sunbathing, bats, Jesus Christ lizards, howler monkeys, a 2-fingered sloth and my favorite encounter – a sleeping porcupine our guide somehow saw in a hole.

Rio Penas Blancas Safari Float bats

When we reached the end of the tour, we got out and walked to a nearby local house to have some juice and snacks. The family who lives there made us natural fruit juice (starfruit that day), fried plantains and yuca bread – all homemade. Delicious and super refreshing way to end a lovely day out on a river surrounded by exotic wildlife!

More details About the Peñas Blancas Safari Float Tour

  • They have two tours: morning and afternoon. Pick up time in morning is around 730 AM, afternoon is around noon (depends on your hotel, times may vary).
  • The kind of boat they use is the same for white water rafting, it is an inflatable raft.
  • You can wear shorts and a shirt, you don’t need to wear long pants if you don’t want to. This area is hot.
  • You won’t be paddling, only the guide paddles. They may ask one member of each boat to help them paddle a little bit but the water is super calm.
  • The river is shallow and they give you life jackets.
  • There are crocodiles and caimans in this river but the guide does not go straight up to them. You will not fall out of the raft either since there are no rapids or waves. Life jackets are mandatory as a safety precaution, not because you will be swimming or going in the water.
  • The boat ride is 2 hours. Since it’s only a 20 minute drive, this is an excellent half day morning tour and you will have the rest of the day to do another tour if you want.

Watch a video of the Rio Penas Blancas safari float!

If you have more time and don’t mind a longer drive, I recommend going on the Rio Frio Safari Float (Pure Nature Safari Float). ..

The Pure Nature Safari float goes down the Rio Frio River in the Caño Wildlife Refuge, which is a longer drive from Fortuna (1.5 hours). However, the perks of this tour is that our tour operator partner is the only one who operates a safari float on this specific section of the river and they operate with no more than 3-5 boats at a time. That means this tour will feel more private and exclusive and this river is more pristine than the Peñas Blancas River. Sometimes in the high season, the Peñas Blancas river gets very crowded since many tour operators run the same tour and there are local houses along the river banks.

Additionally, Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of the most pristine refuges in Costa Rica and there is no public entrance so you will be one of the very few who have ever visited this part of the country. I wrote a post about the Rio Frio Safari Float (called pure nature safari) here.

If you do not want to be on a raft or have very young kids (younger than 5 years) or seniors, then we recommend the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge at Los Chiles tour. It’s a longer day trip, but it is on a covered, motorized river boat down the Rio Frio river in Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge to see wildlife. That tour includes lunch.

We offer a discount for La Fortuna tours you can get in the link. There are lots of different tours like hiking, birdwatching, ATV, horseback riding and much more!

However, if you don’t want to spend all day or more money, the Penas Blancas Safari Float is an excellent option.

My wife and I (60 yrs old – reasonably active) did this tour on 7/30. We booked it through Mytanfeet, as we did another tour in Manuel Antonio, and felt like we had a personal travel agent. The water was pretty high, and moving faster than was ideal due to all the rain. We’d brought binoculars, but didn’t use them on the river, and it’s too hard to use them in that situation. We did use them on shore before and after to spot birds and monkeys. It’s also really hard to use an iphone camera, as we couldn’t get super close to anything when moving, and you’re trying to keep it dry, and not drop it. The best part of the tour for use was the friendly knowledgable naturalist guide who was willing and able to discuss almost any questions regarding nature and Costa Rica.

Love your blog, from reading about Pure Nature Rio Frio Safari I believe our group of 18 would not be able to do this tour. Is this correct?

Hi! Yes they definitely can. You can select the 10+ option and then enter the rest of the groups information in the comments and 10+ box.

Hi Sammi! How does this safari float compare to the Palo Verde boat tour?

The safari float is done on rafts, Palo Verde is on a motorized boat so the safari float is much quieter, feels more natural. This particular safari float is done in the tropical rainforest, so you have chances to see other mammals like sloths and white face monkeys. The Palo Verde boat tour is done in dry tropical forest so no sloths, mostly howler monkeys. Can see animals like bats, iguanas, river birds, caimans/crocodiles in both rivers (more in Palo Verde for caimans/crocodiles)

Hi Sammi– Have you done the Penas Blancas tour in the afternoon? We may not be able to do the morning one and wonder how different it may be.

May 30, 2023

Yes we have also done it in the afternoon, it is hotter and in the rainy season, there are some more possibilities to rain a bit so bring a rainjacket and waterproof items. I definitely recommend the morning as it’s clearer and drier generally and usually animal activity (at least for birds) is more in the morning. In rainy season, it can start getting darker/cloudier around 4 PM or so. Then depending which month you’re visiting, it can rain a lot more in October as October is our rainiest month.

Bandar Seri Begawan Tour Reviews

BANDAR SPLENDOUR PRIVATE TOUR

“ Visit during Eid ”

We made our visit during the Eid holidays and therefore had limited choice of activities that we could do (e.g. museums and restaurants are closed). Despite that, Azizan made the tour very informative. We learned many interesting nuggets of information, and he even managed to procure for us the famous Ambuyat dish. We really enjoyed the tour.

Dear Mr Zulfa, Thank you for your feedback. I'm so glad that you had enjoyed your tour during your visit to Brunei Darussalam. It mean a lot to me and my future.

BRUNEI BRIEF CITY, WATER VILLAGE & MANGROVE RIVER SAFARI PRIVATE TOUR

“ Our Tour Guide Azizan was very knowledgeable ”

Erick advised that Azizan would be our Tour Guide 30 minutes before the Tour started. Azizan was a great guide, clearly has a lot of knowledge about Brunei’s history, its people and many other subjects such as the economy, the education system, etc. Having studied in Singapore on a full scholarship and now working at a Think Tank in Brunei, he must be one of the most well educated tour guides I’ve met despite his young age. He suggested tweaking our plans and first took us to the Brunei Energy Hub, which is an impressive exhibition showcasing the country’s energy journey since 1929. We visited the Water village, had tea and coffee at a local home, visited the Kampong Ayer Gallery within the water village. We were lucky to see a few proboscis monkeys during a mangrove river safari and a couple of kingfisher birds. We also did photo stops at the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque and the Istana. All in all, those 4 hours gave us a wonderful opportunity to get to know a country we had never visited before, and also learn the customs during Ramadan (the period of our visit)

BRUNEI FULL DAY CITY, WATER VILLAGE, MANGROVE RIVER SAFARI TOUR INCLUDE LUNCH (PRIVATE)

“ Enjoyable day trip ”

Had a wonderful day trip visiting the / key mosques, the Islamic Museum Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, took a picture in front of the palace, as well as the mangrove and Kampong Ayer boat tour. Had the opportunity to step inside one of the homes and the light refreshments especially the Pisang Goreng were very nice. I was lucky to spot quite a few proboscis monkeys moving around and also at the mangroves. Happy trip overall which my mum and I enjoyed.

Monica L.

Dear Ms Monica Lim, Thank you very much for such a great review. I am very happy and grateful that you and mum had enjoyed your tour and the local cuisine too. It is a best encouragement for my work. Best wishes, Erick Jamat
