Visa Information

Select the visa type that is right for you to see important information on visa fees, documents required, forms, photo specifications and processing times.

Short Term Visa

If you want to visit Sweden and you are not a citizen of the EU/EEA, you may need a visa. A visa gives you permission to enter and stay in Sweden for a short period. It is valid throughout the Schengen area, but you apply to the country that is the main destination for the journey.

Visas can be granted for such purposes as:

  • Business visits
  • Participation in cultural or sporting events
  • Visits to relatives and friends

You can submit your application at the earliest three months before your planned visit. Apply as far in advance as possible, especially during the peak season. Usually, you get a decision within two weeks.

A visa can be granted for between 1 and 90 days. You have to make use of these days within a given time frame of six months at the most (period of validity).

How many days you are allowed to stay in the Schengen area, and for how long altogether, is stated on the permit sticker attached to your travel document.

If you need to travel to Sweden often, you can ask to be given several entries. Such visas are valid for five years at the most. If the visa is for more than six months, you can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days per six-month period.

A visa does not automatically mean you can enter the Schengen area. Entry checks are always made at external border points. So it is a good idea to bring along copies of the documents you submitted when applying for a visa. Border controls may result in your being denied entry.

It is the Embassy of Sweden that decides whether you are to be granted a visa. In certain cases, the matter is referred to the Swedish Migration Board for a decision.

Applicants should note that the Embassy of Sweden requires all documents to be in original. If you need the original document to be returned to you, you must provide a copy of the document when submitting your application at the application centre.

Read more about visa applications in the menu on the left and on the Swedish Migration Board website.

Life in Sweden

Moving to a new country can be an exciting but daunting experience. Sweden is a beautiful country located in Northern Europe and is known for its high standard of living, beautiful landscapes, and friendly people. As a Pakistani immigrant, you may find some cultural differences when settling in Sweden. In this section, we will discuss what life in Sweden is like for Pakistani immigrants.

Culture and Lifestyle

Swedish culture is known for being liberal and open-minded. Swedes value equality, honesty, and independence. They are known for being punctual, so it is important to be on time for appointments and meetings. Swedes also love the outdoors and enjoy spending time in nature. The country has a lot of parks and green spaces, which are perfect for picnics and walks.

Swedish cuisine is diverse and includes dishes such as meatballs, herring, and crayfish. As a Pakistani immigrant, you may miss the spicy and flavorful dishes from home. Fortunately, there are many Pakistani restaurants and grocery stores in Sweden where you can find ingredients and spices to cook your favorite dishes.

Government and Parliament

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. The Swedish parliament is called the Riksdag, and it is composed of 349 members who are elected every four years. The government is led by the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Speaker of the Riksdag.

As a Pakistani immigrant, you will have the same rights and responsibilities as Swedish citizens. This means that you can vote and participate in political activities. It is important to stay informed about Swedish politics and policies that may affect you as an immigrant.

In conclusion, life in Sweden can be a rewarding experience for Pakistani immigrants. The country’s culture and lifestyle are unique, and the government is committed to promoting equality and fairness. By embracing Swedish culture and staying informed about politics, you can make the most of your time in this beautiful country.

Immigration Policies

When it comes to immigration policies, Sweden has historically been known for its welcoming attitude towards refugees and asylum seekers. However, in recent years, the country has implemented stricter policies, especially regarding family reunification and labor migration.

Asylum and Migration Policy

Sweden has a long-standing tradition of offering asylum to those fleeing persecution and war. The country has one of the most generous asylum policies in Europe, and in 2015 alone, it received over 160,000 asylum applications, the highest number in the EU per capita.

However, in 2016, the Swedish government introduced stricter asylum policies, including temporary residency permits and faster deportation procedures. The government also tightened family reunification policies, making it more difficult for refugees to bring their families to Sweden.

Family Ties and Residence Permit

Family ties play a significant role in Sweden’s immigration policy. Family reunification is an essential aspect of the country’s migration policy, and the government allows refugees to bring their spouses, children, and parents to Sweden.

However, in 2016, the Swedish government introduced stricter family reunification policies, making it more difficult for refugees to bring their families to Sweden. The government increased the income requirements for sponsors, extended the waiting period for family reunification, and limited the number of family members that could be reunited.

In addition to family reunification, Sweden also allows immigrants to apply for a residence permit based on work and business. The government has implemented a points-based system that prioritizes highly skilled workers and entrepreneurs.

Overall, while Sweden has historically been known for its welcoming attitude towards refugees and immigrants, the country has recently implemented stricter policies, especially regarding family reunification and labor migration.

It is important to note that the visa application process can vary depending on the location and individual circumstances of the applicant. It is recommended that applicants consult with the relevant external agency or embassy for guidance on the specific requirements and procedures.

In conclusion, external agencies such as VFS Global and the Swedish embassy play a significant role in facilitating immigration from Pakistan to Sweden. These agencies provide valuable assistance to applicants in navigating the visa application process and obtaining the necessary documentation.
