One of the handiest types of software in anyone’s quiver is the browser extension: those cool little applets that let your browser do what you want it to do. And one of the nicest things about iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is that you can now add extensions to the Safari browser. Even though this is a new feature that launched with the latest iOS version, there are already a number of useful extensions available for you to add.

What follows is a rundown on how to add extensions to your Safari app — while we’ve illustrated the process using an iPhone, you can follow the same basic directions with an iPad. We’ve also included a sampling of some extensions you can try.

How to add extensions

  • Tap on the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to and select Safari > Extensions.
  • Any extensions that you’ve already installed will be listed here. Tap on “More Extensions” if you’d like to see what’s available in the App Store. (You can also simply go to the App Store and search on “Safari Extensions.”)

In your settings, go to Safari > Extensions to see your current extensions and get new ones.

  • Once you’ve installed your first extension, you’ll see a little “puzzle piece” icon on the left side of Safari’s address bar. Tap that, and the menu that pops up will include your current extensions plus a “Manage Extensions” selection, which lets you toggle your extensions on and off.

It’s simple to install a new extension from the App Store.

Some extensions to try

This is a small sampling of some of the extensions that you can now access via the App Store. While there are not many extensions yet available (compared to the number of extensions for, say, Chrome), it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be lots more to come over the next few months.

Amplosion ($2.99)

AMP, which is short for “Accelerated Mobile Pages,” is a web format created by Google to optimize search results for mobile browsers. However, if you’d rather not have Google tweaking the webpages you upload, you can use Amplosion to redirect the AMP links that show up in search results into normal mobile links.

Noir ($2.99)

When you’re browsing at night and you’ve set your iPhone or iPad to dark mode, you will often hit a website that is bright enough to make your eyes water. Noir allows you to set a dark mode for all the websites you visit.

Got a USB-C iPhone? Here's What to Do with Your Old Lightning Gear

Satechi’s new passport cover has find my tracking and rfid blocking, mid-range android vs. old iphone: you should buy the iphone, quick links, managing extensions for safari on iphone and ipad, dark mode everywhere: turn off the lights or nitefall, manage your tab problem: startpage.ai, dismiss cookie permissions pop-ups: super agent, liberate your videos: pipifier, manage your passwords: 1password, disable amp and much more: hyperweb, a welcome enhancement for safari.

With the arrival of iOS 15, Safari for iPhone and iPad gained proper extensions. Apple has taken the same curated App Store approach as it did with Safari for Mac, vastly improving Safari's web browsing capabilities.

Here are some of the highlights, and a brief overview of how extensions work on iOS and iPadOS.

Extensions for the Safari browser on iPhone and iPad are managed using the App Store. You can search for new extensions as you would any other app, and updates are managed by the App Store and can be applied automatically too.

You'll even find a dedicated Safari Extensions category in the App Store app by tapping the Apps tab then scrolling down to "Top Categories" and tapping See All > Safari Extensions.

When you have enabled one or more extensions you will see a small icon in the address bar that looks like a puzzle piece. Tapping on this will show active extensions and a "Manage Extensions" option where you can enable and disable extensions quickly.

Due to Apple's careful approach to privacy in iOS , expect to be asked to grant permission to certain websites or services. Some apps require "Access" to every website they are designed to work with, while others may ask to filter your traffic if they are designed to block certain types of content.

You can go to Settings > Safari > Extensions to see a list of currently installed extensions, what each has access to, and any privacy disclosures. You can also give an extension full access to all websites here, which gets rid of the frequent permissions pop-ups.

You should make sure you fully understand the risks of allowing an app developer to access this information. A similar comparison can be made to third party keyboards , which may require "Full Access" and thus be able to store or transmit anything that is typed.

Many websites now support dark themes either with a toggle or by detecting your device's current settings. Many still don't, and that's a problem when you're trying to browse at night. Turn Off the Lights is one such free extension that attempts to remedy this.

On Safari, the app works by adding a semi-transparent dark overlay. This has the effect of dimming page content without inverting colors, so things appear much dimmer. The benefit of this approach is that it leaves page styles alone which means you're less likely to run into problems with page styles or readability.

It's not foolproof and some websites resist the extension, while the overlay can be a little temperamental at times. It also lacks the customization that you'll find on the desktop version.

Nitefall is a good alternative if Turn Off the Lights falls short. It's also free but can only be used on a limited number (25) of websites. It has three dark themes, support for maps, and site-specific settings but if you want to use it on more websites you'll need to upgrade for a one-off fee of $3.99.

Do you have a nasty tab habit? Culling hundreds of tabs using Safari's tiled view is tedious even on the latest devices. It's not possible to read the full website name or URL, and many older tab previews will be purged. Startpage.ai makes this process much easier.

Once you've set new tabs to open with Startpage.ai you'll see a neat list of all current tabs, with the most recently used at the top. Each tab title is listed with its URL, and you can even filter tabs using the search bar at the top. You can then close each tab with a tap of the red "Close" button.

Related: How to Use Tab Groups in Safari on iPhone and iPad

There's even a dark mode toggle at the top of the screen for managing your tab addiction after dark. An essential extension for anyone who never closes tabs, and something Apple should probably copy to make managing tabs in future versions of Safari less of a mess.

Cookie warnings are one of the most annoying things on the modern internet. It's not necessarily a bad thing that websites now have to ask you before tracking you or gathering information, but cookie warnings introduce additional steps to reading almost any article on the web.

Super Agent is one extension that can help. Install the extension then set your cookie preferences in the app and let Super Agent take care of the rest. The extension will action your preferences on a large number of websites (though not all websites are supported).

Cookies are split into three sections: advertising, functional, and performance. Any that don't fit these categories are automatically blocked. There's no subscription, and the accompanying app makes it easy to manage your preferences.

Related: What Is a Browser Cookie?

Previously a plug-in for the desktop version of Safari, PiPifier does one thing and it does it well: restoring picture-in-picture functionality to videos across the web. Apple added this handy feature to Safari in iOS 14, but it hasn't always worked everywhere. The feature allows you to watch a video in a frame while using other apps, and it has a transformative effect on iPhone and iPad multitasking.

Notably, YouTube blocks picture-in-picture mode on Safari for iPhone and iPad in a bid to get you to use the YouTube app. The YouTube app currently sells this feature back to you as part of a YouTube Red subscription. PiPifier restores picture-in-picture mode to the web version of YouTube, allowing you to use the full functionality of Safari with YouTube once more.

Related: How to Use Picture-in-Picture on iPhone

If you use 1Password then the app's accompanying Safari extension provides a "desktop-class" experience. Of course, the extension isn't going to be of much use to you if you use another service like LastPass or Apple's iCloud Keychain (which already integrates nicely with Safari ).

You can use the extension to autofill details like passwords , credit card details , two-factor authentication codes , and more. You can also quickly access any favorite credentials or notes, and add new items to your 1Password account.

If you want one extension that includes most of the separate enhancements listed above, Hyperweb is what you're looking for. It's the Swiss army knife of mobile Safari extensions, providing features like dark mode (by inverting colors), cookie pop-up management, picture-in-picture plus content blocking, and search engine personalization too.

Related: What Is Google AMP, and Why Is It In My Search Results?

Hyperweb also allows you to apply custom styles and run custom user scripts from websites like Stylish and Greasy Fork which can change the look and feel of some of your favorite websites. It also blocks Google's AMP (Accelerated Mobile Project) pages when visiting from a search engine, and it's currently the only free extension to do so.

If you use third-party apps for services like Twitter, Reddit, or YouTube you can force content to open in apps like Tweetbot, Apollo, or Syndromi. You can also direct Apple Maps to Google Maps, open streams in apps like VLC, or send PDFs to PDF Expert.

Hyperweb's most powerful feature allows you to create your own rules known as local enhancements. You can set "If" and "Then" parameters that target specific URLs, domains, pages, and search engines that go well beyond the included enhancements. You can only create one of these rules in the free version, or you can pay $2.99/month to unlock the extension's functionality.

Here are the best new Safari extensions to download for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 (Updated)

Avatar for Parker Ortolani

One of the flagship new features in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is the redesigned Safari web browser. While the highlight of the new Safari is its user interface, it also gains compatibility with more powerful, Mac-like browser extensions. Now that iOS 15 is available to download, there are plenty of extensions hitting the App Store, and we’ve put together a list of some to try out.

Users of 1Password will love the new Safari extension in the latest update. The 1Password extension gives you the ability to see any password right in Safari and fill in password fields with saved ones. The extension can automatically fill in two-factor authentication codes as well. If you’re using an iPad, you will get the entire desktop 1Password experience. The extension will appear in the toolbar for you to access at any time.

The developer behind Apollo for Reddit, Christian Selig, has created a new Safari extension called Amplosion. Amplosion redirects you to the original webpage when you open an AMP link in Safari. The app also lets you keep track of how many times you’ve visited an AMP link and how many times you’ve used Amplosion to avoid one. Amplosion is priced at just $1.99 and if you hate AMP as much as I do it’s well worth it.

Christian has also created an extension that adds an HTML web inspector to Safari. The app is priced at $0.99 and is well worth it – since Apple still hasn’t added its own inspector.

CardPointers

The new CardPointers Safari extension knows what deals you may be able to take advantage of on different shopping websites. CardPointers says that it’s compatible with thousands of websites. While shopping in Safari with the extension enabled, you’ll get a notice telling you which card to use for the best deal as well as any special offers.

Cheep is an app that helps you find deals on Flights. With its latest update, it adds a Safari extension for use with Google Flights. The extension helps determine the cost per mile, distance in miles, and recommends whether or not you should book the flight. Cheep is free.

Web Inspector

This app is a simple web inspector that appears to be designed to look familiar to those who frequently use one in Chrome on the Mac. This extension lets you inspect webpages and edit their elements, enter JavaScript commands, view network requests, and more. It’s also entirely free.

HyperWeb is a new extension that adds the ability to customize just about anything you want to in Safari while browsing the web. The app lets you create blockers, personalize search, and customize the design of webpages. The app can also recommend enhancements to enable to make the extension more powerful.

Language Translator by Mate

Safari already has some translation features built-in but a new app from Gikken called Language Translator can help you take things to the next level. The app’s new Safari extension can automatically translate sites in 40 languages without any work required by the user. You can also select text and get a pop-up window if you want to translate it to another language. The app is pricey though at $29.99 but if you frequently need to translate different sites in a multitude of languages it might be worth the buy.

Vidimote is a new Safari extension that allows you to control video playback from the toolbar. The extension lets you change the speed of videos, jump ahead, switch between PiP and fullscreen, and more. Vidimote is $4.99 and available now.

StopTheMadness

StopTheMadness is a Safari extension that helps you take control of websites you frequently visit. The extensions lets you enable native iOS features like contextual menus, text editing, drag and drop, and autofill. The extension also improves privacy on the web by stopping clickjacking for different services among other things. StopTheMadness is priced at $7.99 on the App Store.

The 6 Best Safari Extensions for iPhone & iPad

safari mobile plugins

Safari extensions can boost your browsing in many ways, from blocking adds, to finding deals, and even to doing good things for the environment. Now that Safari extensions are available on your iPhone and iPad in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, you may be wondering what's the best way to use them on your device, and which extensions are reliable and worthwhile. Here are the best iOS Safari extensions and what each one can do for you.

Best Safari Extensions iPad & iPhone

1. TreeClicks

TreeClicks is my personal favorite Safari extension. It partners with online retailers all across the Web to plant trees every time you make a purchase. Most sites let you see how many trees you've planted through the app (with a notable exception being Amazon, which doesn't provide the numbers) and a surprising number of sites has joined in on this project. Just add the TreeClicks extension and it'll pop up when you go to a site it partners with and give you the option to plant a tree for free with any purchase from that site. Online shop and do some good!

2. Microsoft Translator

Apple's native translating software leaves much to be desired. Language options are limited, and the ways to translate are pretty minimal. So, on this one, we're going to send you over to Microsoft. Microsoft Translator is one of the most popular translating options, and rightly so. It offers seventy language options, and can translate text on a webpage easily by activating the extension. Some browsers have a certain amount of built-in language translation, but I highly recommend getting the Microsoft Translator to make your life a lot easier.

This is a simple one - it blocks ads for you! There are a lot of ad blocking options out there, and most will get the job done for your one way or another, but AdBlock is simple, straightforward, and free. Blocking ads helps pages load faster and cuts down on the general annoyance of browsing, but some web pages won't let you load their content unless you disable your ad blocker, so you'll want to make sure to get one that's easily turned off. AdBlock is easy on/easy off, and that, combined with the fact you don't have to pay for it, is a win for me.

4. Pinterest

Pinterest is a great way to gain inspiration and collect DIY project ideas, but I regularly forget about its existence for months at a time. The Pinterest extension, however, not only keeps Pinterest in the forefront of my mind as a way to conveniently save recipes, projects, and beautiful images, but it also reminds me to actually go back and review these things next time I'm looking for something to cook or make, or just to vibe with. Even if you're not a regular Pinterest user, this extension is definitely worth checking out, because having all your inspiration in one place is excellent.

5. Grammarly

Ever have an argument derailed by a typo? Or maybe you've reread an email sent late at night only to realize your opening sentence made no sense. Whether you're aiming for professionalism or just competence in your written online presence, Grammarly has your back. This extension will scan your writing and alert you of misspellings, grammatical inaccuracies, and other points in your work you may need to correct. Whether you need help with the same few mistakes or just want to make sure nothing goes undetected, Grammarly is perfect for cleaning up your writing.

6. Honey Smart Shopping Assistant

I feel a little uneasy every time I leave the Discount Code box empty when I'm checking out online. Is there something I'm missing? Could I be saving money? Honey takes this anxiety away, by automatically scanning for deals and discount codes for a website. If Honey finds a discount or coupon for the website you're browsing, a notification will pop up and allow you to automatically apply that code. It takes the legwork out of bargain hunting and ensures you're getting the best prices for those online stores.

Apple’s Safari browser is getting a major update in iOS 15 that will allow mobile users to use extensions.

Among the slew of announcements during this week’s 2021 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple said that extensions are coming to Safari browsers on mobile devices and tablets. The addition of extensions will allow users to customize their mobile browsing experience by adding password fillers, text translators, and other convenient apps.

Safari will be the first mobile browser to offer extensions, beating out other browsers like Google Chrome. Right now, you can only download separate apps that act as extensions or use the few built-in ones like Safari’s popup blocker and Reader View, but this will be the first time extensions are built into a mobile browser.

The addition of mobile extensions means users will be able to use popular Safari extensions like Adblock Plus, HoverSee, WasteNoTime, Honey codes, and more.

Aside from news of the extensions, Apple announced an entirely new Safari experience coming not only to the new macOS . but all Apple devices. The reimagined Safari will have a streamlined tab bar with the search feature built right into the active tab. The new tab bar takes on the color of the site you’re viewing, so it feels like a part of the page.

...Extensions will allow users to customize their mobile browser experience by adding password fillers, text translators, and other convenient apps.

Tab Groups also are a new addition to Safari in iOS 15, allowing users to save tabs into specific topics or groups and pick them back up later, even across devices.

Best Safari Extensions in 2024

safari mobile plugins

If you're using a Mac, chances are high that your browser of choice is Safari. Personally, I use it all the time unless something specifically doesn't work with Safari, and I need Chrome or some other browser. But by default, I just stick with Safari. While Safari looks barebones compared to other browsers, you can actually customize it and get some useful functionality through the use of Safari Extensions. Here are some of our favorites.

Ghostery Lite

1Password Safari Extension

In a world where you need a password for pretty much everything, and the best security is always a randomly-generated strong and secure password, we always turn to 1Password to get the job done.

The 1Password Safari Extension is a mini version of the full-fledged 1Password app. You can quickly access all of your vaults and logins, even searching for what you need. The extension also recognizes the website that you're on, so it quickly pulls up the login info that you need. If there's nothing, you can also add a new login or item, and it helps you generate strong, secure passwords on-the-fly.

1Password includes a 30-day trial for free when you download it. Afterward, you can subscribe with individual membership at $4 a month or family membership (up to five members) for $7 a month.

Ever encounter a website that seems to disable certain user interface features that are supposed to be on by default in Safari? StopTheMadness helps you make sure that those features still work, even if a website seems to want them disabled.

With StopTheMadness, you'll be able to command-click and middle-click to open a link in a new tab, or use your command-key keyboard shortcuts. You'll still be able to open contextual menus, select/copy/paste text, drag-and-drop, AutoFill or auto-complete passwords, emails, and more. Oh, and smooth scrolling like butter. All of this will continue to work as normal even on sites that try to disable it, all thanks to StopTheMadness.

It also helps protect your privacy on the web, and gets rid of those annoying "Are you sure you want to leave this page?" prompts.

Mate Universal Tab Translator Safari Extension

Ever come across a website in a language that you can't understand? While you could just open up another tab and copy-and-paste words into something like Google Translate, why not save yourself the time and effort with Mate: Universal Tab Translator?

With Mate, you can double-click or right-click on any text in almost any app (not just Safari) to translate it. You can even translate your entire clipboard with the Alt+Shift+T keyboard shortcut, which also opens up Mate above all of your other apps. Mate understands 103 languages, gives you the phonetic transcriptions, and can speak out words and texts with the correct accents to help you learn. There is also the ability to make a custom phrasebook for each language, and all translations are kept in sync across all devices.

I often come across a few links that take me to webpages in another language, so this extension is incredibly useful for helping me understand what it is I'm looking at. The price tag is a bit hefty, but it's well worth the cost if you want a fast and streamlined way of translating in Safari and other apps.

8 Best Safari extensions for iPhone and iPad in 2024

Updated on:

author image

There is no denying that Safari is arguably the best web browser for Apple devices. However, no matter how feature-packed Safari is, it still lacks some needed functionalities. Fortunately, you can use many Extensions to add third-party functionality to the browser to improve your browsing experience and boost productivity, security, and privacy. And thanks to iOS 15, even iPhones and iPads now support Safari Extensions.

But, with so many Safari extensions offering similar functionalities, finding the right one becomes overwhelming. So, to help you out, I did the math and curated the list of the best Safari extensions for iPhones and iPads.

1. PiPifier – Picture-in-Picture for any video

PiPifier Safari Extension for iPhone

As the name suggests, the PiPifier Safari Extension lets you play any HTML5 video in Picture-in-Picture mode on your iPhone. To do so, play any video on YouTube, Netflix, or any other streaming platform, head to the Safari toolbar, and hit the PiPFier icon. The extension provides the same experience as the official YouTube app’s PiP mode, making it a perfect Safari Extension for users who love multitasking.

During my extensive testing, I never found it behaving abruptly or malfunctioning. However, it can sometimes take a little extra time for the PiPifier icon to become available when playing large videos such as movies.

Key features

  • Plays any video in PiP
  • Adjustable window size and position
  • Seamless multitasking experience

Price:  Free (Subscription starts at $0.99/month)

Download: PiPifier

2. Pocket – Save for later

Pocket Safari Extension for iPhone

Have you ever encountered web content, be it an article, video, or story, that you wish you could save to savor later without needing to download it? If yes, then Pocket is just the right Safari Extension for you. Pocket allows you to quickly save your favorite web content and catch up with it later whenever you have the required time.

In addition, Pocket has dark and sepia themes to give you a comfortable reading experience. These themes reduce the visual simulation so that extensive reading does not harm your eyes. Besides this, if you are a lazy reader, you can benefit from its “Listen” to make your iPhone speakers read out the articles for you.

While you can install Pocket from the App Store for free, you can choose to go premium ($4.99/month) anytime to explore features like automatic article backups, unlimited highlights, and advanced search.

  • Listen feature
  • Dark & Sepia themes
  • Advanced search

Download: Pocket

3. Grammarly – Writing assistant

Grammarly Safari extension for iPhone

Being a writer, I can not imagine a day without Grammarly. Once you install this extension, the Grammarly icon appears virtually everywhere you write text in Safari to give you real-time feedback on your writing. For the unknowns, Grammarly helps you with punctuation, spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, content tone & style, sentence formation, clarity, and more, making it a must-have Safari Extension for anyone with a keyboard, whether virtual or real.

Yes, Apple Intelligence can perform everything that Grammarly can natively, but with Apple Intelligence being reserved for iPhone 15 Pro or later models, Grammarly is here to stay.

  • Real-time feedback
  • Spell check
  • Grammar check

Price: Free (Subscription starts at $29.99/month)

While Apple is already the head of the table when it comes to users’ privacy and security, having Clario can take your online security to the next level. Calrio is an all-in-one Safari extension that protects your browsing experience on multiple fronts.

It can block ads and trackers, block spam calls, protect your device against malware, and provide a VPN connection to safeguard your online activities.

  • Data breach monitor
  • Spam calls blocker

4. Noir – Dark Mode for Safari

noir dark mode safari extension ios and ipados

Apple added Dark mode support to the iPhone with iOS 13, but many websites have yet to support this popular feature. That’s exactly where this cool Safari extension comes in handy. If you are a “The BOYS” fan, then by now, you must have realized why the extension is given the name Noir.

For someone who prefers the full-on dark mode experience across the websites while browsing Safari, Noir is the best choice. Noir allows you to force every website to operate in dark mode on iPhone and iPad , even if they don’t support it. The workings of this Safari Extension are pretty neat as it uses a smart algorithm to analyze the color pattern on a specific website, then generates a custom dark mode that syncs well with each element of the website.

  • Neat implementation
  • Custom dark style

Price: $2.99

Use Safari extensions on your Mac

Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:

Choose Safari > Settings.

Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.

Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.

When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Share button

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.

To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

No alt supplied for Image

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

The updated Safari app is Apple’s best-kept secret in iOS 18

Safari website homepage in iOS 18.

Safari, for all its quirks, still commands the lion’s share of web browsers on Apple products. But compared to what its rivals offer on Android, it also comes out as the laziest in terms of innovation.

With iOS 18 , Apple is turning the AI knob to the max , and the ripple effects of that approach are reflected in the latest builds of iOS and iPadOS, as well. Much attention has also been paid to making the web browser more convenient.

But a couple of features really stand out, and they dramatically improve one of Safari’s fundamental utilities: providing information on a screen in a less frustrating fashion.

Finally, a worthy reader

When Apple announced Reader mode in Safari across all its platforms, I dismissed it as just another small update. But the execution has really stood out for me, especially the tasteful background colors and how clean everything looks right from the start.

As soon as you land on a compatible website, the URL bar flashes a “Reader Mode available” message. In case you miss it, the icon to the left end of the pill-shaped bar also changes its shape to that of a notebook held vertically.

Tapping on it opens a small window with two prominent buttons: Show Reader and Listen to Page. Both are pretty self-descriptive. Once you enable the Reader mode for a webpage, it just doesn’t pick a random background color. Instead, it plays to the tunes of your phone’s default light/dark mode settings. So, if you’ve got light mode enabled, the Reader mode picks up the theme with a black background.

In case you’re wondering, there are four colors to choose from: white, black, gray, and beige. The dark version looks the best, but for reading, the beige color scheme, with its vintage newspaper-esque feel, takes the cake. It’s funny that Reader mode doesn’t work on Apple’s website. Irony, eh? Jokes apart, you can adjust size and font without losing yourself in a maze of hidden settings.

Apple has created a clean scrolling list of fonts in the same pop-up window as the core reading controls, alongside page magnification adjustments. Another understated perk is that you can set the Reader mode to trigger automatically for any website of your choice.

For example, if you’re currently reading this article on Digital Trends, tap the three-dot ellipsis icon in the Reader mode window, and as it expands, enable the toggle that says “Use Reader Automatically.”

Of course, it’s AI season, so a smattering of Apple Intelligence is making its way to the Reader mode in Safari. It only makes sense, especially when it serves a purpose and is not merely there for some gimmick, unlike what we recently saw with Google’s Pixel Studio app .

You may also notice a pink icon right below the headline of a webpage, proclaiming the word “Summarize” in bold. Well, it does exactly what it says. Tap on it, and you will see a colorful wave passing over the text for a few seconds. Voila, you have a summary presented right at the top.

But what’s not-so-voila about this summary is that it’s not always accurate. Occasionally, it can simply miss the most important elements of the story, but otherwise, it does a fairly good job of diluting a long story into a concise version. It’s not surprising, as the Summarizer feature in the Mail app also makes similar mistakes. As the adage goes, it’s just another day for AI.

On the Android side, the situation is a bit complicated. Chrome on mobile lacks a native Reader mode. You have to download a dedicated app by Google from the Play Store, head back to Chrome, and then tap on the floating shortcut to enable Reader mode on any webpage of your choice. Apple has a better implementation here, and it shows.

Snap, and it shall be done

In 2019, Google added the Infinity Gauntlet to its search results . A click on this apocalyptic hand wiped half the search results — gone, reduced to atoms — with the same kind of animation as the Avengers vanishing into nothingness when the Mad Titan snapped his fingers.

Apple has added something similar to Safari with iOS 18. But instead of restoring balance to the universe in a murderous fashion, this one wipes off visual distractions from a webpage. Think of pesky ads, scrolling widgets, pop-up videos, and other unnecessary items.

It can wipe anything. The headline, images, embeds, pop-ups, unnecessary social icons … whatever you’d like. Heck, go ahead, wipe off the entire text, and stare into the nothingness of a bright OLED screen. All you need to do is tap the Reader mode icon in the URL bar and select “Hide distracting items.”

Next, scroll through the webpage, find any distracting element, and select it. It will gloriously vanish like sand flying in a desert storm. It’s beautiful to witness, even though it’s tedious, compared to the convenience of having a pristine view in Reader mode.

But I think it’s more of a fail-safe measure for web pages where Reader mode can’t be enabled, such as Apple’s own web page that describes the new iOS 18 feature. On a serious note, I don’t know how happy advertisers are about this feature, but it certainly impacts the click-driven rule for studying (read: rewarding) the impact of ads.

A few other niceties

There are some other new features that haven’t received much attention, but they are here nonetheless. Highlights are a neat addition to flash important information from a web page in a more noticeable fashion. Apple has also made the native browsing tools context-aware. You will see Reader mode controls and the voice reader facility only on web pages where they make sense. For example, they won’t appear on your bank’s website.

Say you land on a website with content in a non-native language. Instead of rummaging through the menu for the translate button, in iOS 18, you will see it in the quick pop-up with a single tap on the left edge of the URL bar. Apple has also pulled tools that used to be hidden behind a few layers and now prominently shows them as a scrolling list in the main Safari toolbar. These include core tab controls, page actions, and link behavior.

Furthermore, you can adjust their position to your liking based on how frequently you use them. Finally, the Apple browser now supports extensions and content blockers in web apps. Many other technical changes have also been made in the background, which you can read about on Apple’s website .

Overall, Safari in iOS 18 (and iPadOS 18) is not a revolution by any stretch of the imagination. But for the new features that are here, they’ve been executed nicely. And I’ll take that instead of an ambitious but buggy mess.

But more than anything, it’s a practically helpful set of features. This isn’t a flashy set of AI tricks that need a lot of pricey computational power. It all lives in an app that you visit regularly for meaningful tasks. And I love it.

The wait is finally over — the state of California is beginning to roll out support for digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in the Apple Wallet app on both iPhone and Apple Watch, Apple announced today.

Yes, if you live in the Golden State, you will soon be able to get your digital ID in Apple Wallet.

It seems Apple is trying to shoehorn the “Air” concept into the iPhone portfolio, and it may not necessarily turn out to be a wallet destroyer. According to Bloomberg, the “far thinner” iPhone 17 model planned for 2025 will sit between the entry-point iPhone 17 and the more expensive Pro models.

Earlier in May this year, The Information reported that Apple was planning “a significantly thinner version of the iPhone” slated for launch next year. However, the report added that it could well be the most expensive smartphone in Apple’s 2025 lineup. But the latest report from Bloomberg puts this skinnier iPhone model in the mid-segment as a replacement for the ongoing “Plus” model in Apple’s lineup. “The idea is to create an “Air” version of the iPhone of sorts,” says the report.

Apple Intelligence is on the way to various compatible devices, but some of its advanced features may cost as much as $10 to $20 a month, according to analysts. The report comes from two analysts at Counterpoint Research who spoke with CNBC and speculated that the company could require an Apple One subscription for users to take advantage of the full suite of AI features.

According to Neil Shah, partner at Counterpoint Research, AI investments are expensive, and Apple will seek ways to pass the cost onto users. “Software and services make it more lucrative for Apple to pass it on with the Apple One subscription model,” Shah told CNBC in an interview.

History of Tomsk Oblast

The development of this region began in the late 16th - early 17th centuries. The oldest settlement in the Tomsk region is the village of Narym, founded in 1596.

The town of Tomsk was founded as a military fortress by the decree of Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604. It was one of the outposts of the development of Siberia.

From 1708 to 1782, Tomsk was part of the Siberian province. In 1804, the town became the center of a separate Tomsk province, which included the current territories of the Altai krai, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, East Kazakhstan, Tomsk regions and part of Krasnoyarsk krai.

In the 19th century, the growth of gold mining, smelting of metals, fur trade concentrated large capital in Tomsk, triggering a revival of trade. Important transport routes - the Moscow and Irkutsk tracts - passed through Tomsk.

In 1888, the first university beyond the Urals was opened in Tomsk, in 1900 - the Technological Institute, in 1901 - the first commercial school in Siberia, in 1902 - the Teachers’ Institute. By 1914, Tomsk was one of the 20 largest cities in the Russian Empire.

In 1925, the Tomsk Governorate was abolished and became part of the Siberian region. In the 1930s, Tomsk lost its administrative significance. In August 1944, the city became again a regional center.

During the Second World War, dozens of factories, educational, scientific, and cultural institutions were evacuated to Tomsk oblast and became the basis for the further development of the region in the postwar years.

In the 1950s, the first in the USSR nuclear center of the world level was created in Tomsk Oblast - the Siberian Chemical Combine. In the 1960s-1970s, oil production began on the territory of the region, a giant petrochemical plant was built - the Tomsk Petrochemical Combine.

Tomsk Oblast - Features

The length of the Tomsk region from north to south is about 600 km, from west to east - 780 km. Most of the territory is difficult to access because of taiga forests occupying about 60% of the region and marshes (28.9%). The Vasyugan swamp is one of the largest marshes in the world.

The climatic conditions of the southern and northern districts of the Tomsk region are markedly different. Almost the entire territory of the region is located within the taiga zone. The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in July is plus 24 degrees Celsius, in January - minus 16 degrees Celsius. The climate in the northern part of the region is more severe, winters are longer.

The largest cities and towns of Tomsk Oblast are Tomsk (570,800), Seversk (105,200), Strezhevoy (38,900), Asino (24,400), Kolpashevo (22,200). Lake Mirnoye located in Parabelsky district is the largest lake. The main river, the Ob, crosses the region diagonally from the southeast to the northwest, dividing it into two almost equal parts.

The main industries are oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, engineering, nuclear, electric power, timber industry, and food industry. All the machine-building and metal-working plants are located mainly in Tomsk and partly in Kolpashevo and Seversk. Oil is extracted mainly in the north-west and west of the region.

The main branches of agriculture are meat and dairy cattle breeding. Agricultural fields occupy about 5% of the territory. Wheat, flax and vegetables are grown in small amounts. Cattle-, pig-, sheep-, and goat-breeding are presented as well as poultry farming. Fur trade (squirrels, sables, musk-rats) and fur farming (silver-black fox) are also developed.

Tomsk Oblast - Natural Resources

Tomsk Oblast is rich in such natural resources as oil, natural gas, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, brown coal (the first place in Russia), peat (the second place in Russia), and groundwater. In the region there is the Bakcharskoe iron ore deposit, which is one of the largest in the world (about 57% of all iron ore in Russia).

Forests are one of the most significant assets of the region: about 20% (more than 26.7 million hectares) of forest resources in Western Siberia are located in Tomsk oblast. The timber reserves amount to 2.8 billion cubic meters.

In the Tomsk region there are 18.1 thousand rivers, streams and other watercourses with a total length of about 95 thousand km, including 1,620 rivers with a length of more than 10 km.

The main waterway is the Ob River. The Ob length in the region is 1,065 km. The main tributaries of the Ob flowing into it on the territory of the Tomsk region are the Tom, Chulym, Chaya, Ket, Parabel, Vasyugan, Tym.

Attractions of Tomsk Oblast

The sights of Tomsk Oblast include the harsh beauty of Siberian nature, the variety of winding rivers and canals, as well as monuments of wooden architecture, and other places that keep ancient legends about this land.

Undoubtedly, it is worth to visit Lake Kirek, one of the most beautiful reservoirs of the Tomsk region. It is located only 50 km from Tomsk. According to legend, a local millionaire drowned his diamonds here during the revolution in 1917.

About 40 km from Tomsk, there is a lake complex of the village of Samus consisting of seven lakes. These lakes are known for their very dark water, which is explained by the streams flowing into them from peat bogs.

Near the village of Kolarovo, located 33 km south of Tomsk, there is Siniy (Blue) cliff. It is a three-kilometer precipice descending to the Tom River. The cliff got its name due to the gray-blue shale that covers it. Several centuries ago, after the founding of Tomsk, a watchtower was installed on the cliff, from which signals were sent to the fortress.

At the source of the Berezovaya River, 40 km southeast of Tomsk, there is such an attraction as the Talovsky bowls, a natural monument of national importance. These are huge natural figures in the form of vessels of oval form, covered from the inside by birnessite - a rare mineral.

There is a tourist attraction of a global scale in the Tomsk region - the Vasyugan marshes, the largest marsh complex in the world. It is also called the “Russian Amazon”, because the Vasyugan marshes are not inferior to the famous South American river by their scale.

To the collection of sights of Alexandrovsky district of the Tomsk region, the most distant from the regional center, we can add Lake Baikal, the namesake of the famous lake, Goluboye (Blue) Lake, Malyye mountains (highlands) in the valley of the Vakh River and the Paninsky reserve, where the ancient burials of the Khanty and Ostyaks are preserved.

On the right bank of the Ob River, more than 200 km from Tomsk, the village of Mogochino is located. St. Nicholas Convent can be found here.

In Tomsk itself, plenty of monuments of wooden architecture deserve attention. In total, there are more than 700 objects, including 109 monuments of federal and regional significance.

Also in the Tomsk region you can visit more than 100 museums (most of them are located in Tomsk). The most popular museums are the Museum of History of Tomsk, the Memorial Museum “The NKVD Investigative Prison”, the Museum of Wooden Architecture, the Tomsk Regional Art Museum.
