Now, it has become one of the most prominent tourist centers in the country. The national park is located in the subtropical inner Terai lowlands and stretches up to the Churia Hills.

Home to many endangered animals like the royal Bengal tiger, one-horn rhino, gharial crocodile, and others, the Chitwan National Park has become one of Nepal's most visited national parks. In addition, you also get to see several other wildlife-like elephants, deer, wild boar, sloth bear, leopards, monkeys, and diverse species of birds. To be honest, this place is a paradise for birdwatchers. As per the records, there are 364 species of birds.

Meet with the indigenous group of Tharus

Tharus is one of the indigenous communities of Nepal with great history and ancient cultural heritage. While visiting Chitwan, we make sure to take our guests to their village and let them see the traditional attire, stick dance, and taste their delicacies.

One of the famous dances is Stick dance, which is called Danda Nach in the local language. Likewise, Ago Nach (Fire Dance) and Mayur Nach (Peacock Dance) are also popular cultural shows.

The climate of Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park has a tropical monsoon climate, which is highly hot, humid, and sticky throughout the year. The Chitwan National Park is located in the central climatic zone of the Himalayas; the monsoon starts in mid-June and lasts till late September.

Chitwan National Park has three major climates summer (March to June), monsoon (July to September), and the temperature cools down & winter arrives from October to February.

Vegetation in Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park can be characterized by tropical and subtropical forests. In this national park, most of the areas have been covered by the moist deciduous vegetation type of the Terai region. Besides forests, there is a huge area, which is covered by grasslands, and more than 50 species of grasses can be found in this region including the world's tallest grasses.

Wildlife in Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park has a wide variety of faunal diversity. Nearly 700 species of wildlife can be observed in this park. Nearly 17 species of snakes, monitor lizards and starred tortoises also reside in this park.

Nepal , Asia , Blog / July 20, 2023 by Monica / Leave a Comment

Thinking about going on a Chitwan jungle safari? Great idea! This Chitwan National Park safari guide will tell you how to get there, where to book, and what animals you’ll see while on safari in Chitwan National Park. We’ll also cover what to pack and what not to pack, as well as when to go. Let’s dive in!

  • Best Kathmandu Tour : Book the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu to see many of the top-rated sights around the city!
  • Best Nepal Tour : If you want to see it all, this   10-day Adventure Tour visits three of my favorite areas in Nepal: Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan.

  • 5 Nepal Travel Essentials : a  lightweight scarf ; a  wide brim hat ; a  reusable water bottle ; a  plug converter ; a pair of loose palazzo pants .

Chitwan National Park was one of my most-anticipated stops while I was visiting Nepal .

I’d experienced wildlife safaris before in Tanzania , and though I was lucky enough to see the Big Five and much more, Chitwan would be a new experience altogether.

The terrain was wildly different, and the animals were a world away. One horned rhinos and the unique gharial crocodile can all be seen here… and I could not wait to see them for myself.

If you are planning a Chitwan jungle safari, but aren’t sure where to start, this article will help you. Here we will cover where to go and what to see in Chitwan, what (and what not) to wear on safari, as well as top safari tours.

From the lush green jungle to the clear rivers to the incredible animal life, here is everything you need to know about a Chitwan jungle safari!

Planning a Chitwan Jungle Safari

Chitwan National Park was the first national park of Nepal.

Established in 1973, this expansive park covers 932 km² of lush subtropical terrain. Nestled in the Inner Terai lowlands, it offers a diverse landscape ranging from peaceful river valleys to majestic Churia Hills.

Chitwan National Park is filled with wild and endangered animals. From the mighty one-horned rhinoceros, to the regal Bengal tiger, you’ll likely encounter the many majestic creatures that call this park home.

If you have the chance to go on a Chitwan National Park safari, you should absolutely do it! In this guide, I will tell you exactly how to plan and what to expect in Chitwan National Park.

When to go on a Chitwan National Park safari

If you are able to arrange it, the best time to visit Chitwan National Park is in April and May. Though these months are hot, reaching up into the low triple digits, trust me – it will be worth it!

This is because April and May are the end of the dry season in Nepal . This means that animals are much more likely to come out into the open, looking for watering holes, rather than staying hidden in the jungle.

If you want to visit during a more comfortable temperature range, then October to early March is the best for you. Temperatures will sit around the mid-70s, but be forewarned. Though you are more comfortable, you may not see as many animals.

Winter, on the other hand, gets downright cold. January is the chilliest month, skimming freezing at night.

I booked my safari in Chitwan National Park within the first half of May. While it definitely was hot and extremely sunny each day, I wouldn’t change that decision. I saw more animals than expected and we had long, dry days.

Pro Tip: This Chitwan jungle safari follows the exact route I took. It includes a walking safari, Jeep safari, and dugout canoe ride. Swipe my exact itinerary. BOOK YOUR JUNGLE SAFARI HERE!

What You’ll See On Safari in Chitwan National Park

The park is home to 68 species of mammals. The two most famous residents of the park are easily the Bengal Tiger and the Greater One-horned Rhino. Note that the rhinos and tigers are found in two different areas of the park.

You’ll likely see various hooved animals, including sambar, hog deer, barking deer, spotted deer, and wild boar.

The park is also home to 55 species of amphibians and reptiles. Gharial crocodiles were the stars for me, and they swam beside my canoe as we glided through the Rapti River.

Chitwan National Park is also home to nearly 600 species of birds, many of which you will see on your safari.

If you choose to take a walking safari, which is included on my recommended Chitwan tour , you will also see untamed plant life, creeping vines, and towering trees up close.

Where Is Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is located in the southern part of central Nepal, close to the border of India.

Kathmandu to Chitwan Distance

Chitwan National Park is over 105 miles away from Kathmandu , Nepal’s capital city. It will take nearly five hours to drive to Chitwan via rental car, but can take longer through other transportation modes.

More on those below.

Ways to get there

You have a few options when deciding how to travel to Chitwan National Park.

Take a tour.

The easiest (and arguably best) way to get to Chitwan national Park is on a tour.

The park has regulations that prohibit visitors from walking the park without a guide anyway, so in my opinion it is easiest to book a tour before arriving.

You can either book a larger tour of Nepal that includes a stop in Chitwan, lodging, transpiration nd more, or you can book a tour of Chitwan only, including transportation and lodging.

Let’s break down each option.

⫸  10-Day Adventure Sports Tour in Nepal

I one-thousand percent recommend this  10-day adventure sports tour  for anyone who wants to incorporate their Chitwan jungle safari with excursions in Pokhara and Kathmandu, too. loves nature, culture, and an adrenaline rush!

I can  personally vouch  for every activity on this tour!

It is the exact route I followed and hits all the stops you have seen me post about on this site. The only difference between this tour and mine is that I added on an ultralight flight, too.

  • On this tour, you’ll experience a jungle safari to see rhinos and elephants in Chitwan National Park .
  • You’ll ride a dugout canoe and see gharial crocodiles.
  • Adventurers, you’ll get to go bungee jumping and paragliding in Pokhara and ride the steepest zipline in the world.
  • And, you’ll see cultural sites in Pokhara and Kathmandu.

I could not recommend this experience more!

⫸  3-Day Chitwan National Park Safari from Kathmandu

If you just need a tour to and from Chitwan, minus the rest of Nepal, then I recommend  this 3-day Chitwan tour .

It originates in Kathmandu, and all transportation is provided via Tourist Bus to and from Chitwan. (Be forewarned, the bus ride is long! 7 or 8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.)

It also includes all meals and accommodations in Chitwan, near the park, as well as entrance fees and activities within the national park.

You’ll get up close and personal with gharial crocodiles, and enjoy a guided Jeep tour. Lastly, tackle short jungle hikes as well as a cultural show from the Tharu tribe.

Chitwan was one of the highlights of my entire trip, and this tour won’t disappoint. Seeing the one-horned rhinos and gharial crocodiles was incredible, and the lush green jungle was so lush and beautiful.

The colorful flora in Chitwan National Park.

Ride the Tourist Bus.

Every morning, multiple tourist buses leave from Kathmandu to Sauraha, which is near one of the park’s 12 entrances.

When booking the tourist bus, know in advance that the road is difficult for the bus to drive. There are large unpaved sections and that will nearly double the transportation time.

It can take around eight hours, give or take, to reach the park by bus, depending upon traffic, road construction, and weather.

Book a Rental Car.

From Kathmandu , Chitwan National Park is reachable in under five hours by car.

From Pokhara and Lumbini, Chitwan National Park is a roughly four to five hours drive.

Pro Tip: I always get the best rental car prices here. If you are considering booking your own car to self drive, BOOK YOUR RENTAL CAR HERE!

The park is easily accessible from most of the larger cities of Nepal. Be aware that some sections of the road are unpaved, though they are passable by car if you take it slow.

What To Pack for a Chitwan Jungle Safari

The key to comfort on a Chitwan jungle safari is layers. While I do have a complete Nepal packing list available, I want to talk a bit more specifically about what to pack for your safari in Chitwan.

You do not want to go on a Chitwan jungle safari without sunscreen ! I saw plenty of red, sun-burned people and – better to not be one of them. Choose this eco-friendly option if you can. Get yours here!

What not to pack for a Chitwan jungle safari

When planning for your safari in Chitwan National Park, you will want to be very mindful about what colors you pack.

Earth-tones and muted colors that blend with the natural environment are best.

Bright unnatural colors, like vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, should be avoided. This is because the bright colors can scare or startle the animals, and they may be more likely to stay hidden if you’re wearing them.

Your guide will likely warn you the day before about color considerations for your tour. Unfortunately, there are always people who ignore that advice.

Don’t be that person!

Where To Stay Near Chitwan National Park

If you choose to self drive or travel to Chitwan without a tour, you are gonna need a place to stay. While it is not possible to stay inside the park, there are a number of options in the small towns nearby.

I stayed at the Parkland Hotel in Chitwan and I highly recommend it! If I return, I would absolutely book a stay here again.

The grounds are lush and green. There is a swimming pool on site, which is amazing in the hotter months. The staff is all super friendly and helpful. And, the rooms are comfortable.

They serve buffet-style meals, which accommodate both meat eaters, vegetarians, and a number of other dietary needs. My only criticism is that they could have served dal bhat and other Nepali staples, but hey – I ate well so no compaints!

FAQs on Chitwan National Park

Still have questions about taking a safari in Chitwan National Park? Let’s tackle those below.

How many days do you need in Chitwan National Park?

I recommend a minimum of three days in Chitwan (3d/2N) so that you get to take a safari drive, a Rapti River canoe ride, and a walking safari. With more than three days, you could even consider longer visits to the elephant breeding center, gharial breeding center, and more.

Basically, the longer you stay in Chitwan, the more wildlife you will get to see.

Chitwan Jungle Safari, The Ultimate Guide 2024

Chitwan Jungle Safari – This post contains affiliate links

Chitwan jungle safari has been enticing travellers to Nepal for decades.  Years and years ago, this jungle was an intrepid and dangerous place to visit, with only the bravest of tourists setting foot there. We were told stories of elephant attacks on tribal villages and how our guide helped his clients up a tree to hide from a leopard below for a full day!

Now, for better or for worse, it is a tourist hotspot and a must visit destination on any trip to Nepal.

On arrival for your Chitwan jungle safari you may question what you’re doing here.  The town itself is pretty enough, set along the Narayani River, with dusty roads and sunset views.  It is, however, not the jungle paradise you would probably expect from this UNESCO world heritage status national park.

Venture further down the river though and you will find yourself in dense, thick jungle that is just teeming with wildlife.  A Chitwan jungle safari is not to be missed and will be a highlight of any trip to Nepal – whether you get to see the elusive creatures or not!

About Chitwan National Park

The chitwan jungle with light coming through the trees

Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal. The sad story behind Chitwan jungle is that after it received national park status, the indigenous tribes that made their homes and livelihoods here were forced to leave the jungle.

Chitwan National Park was sadly a popular hunting ground for many years, drastically reducing the number of rare rhinos, tigers and elephants found here.

Due to careful conservation efforts (spurred on by tourist activity) numbers are on the rise. So although tourism is something to be cautious of in areas like this, if you’re careful about the tours you choose then you can rest in the knowledge that your money is going back into the jungle and communities that surround it.

Where Is Chitwan National Park

A tiger spotted on a chitwan jungle safari in nepal

Chitwan jungle is located in south-central Nepal in the districts of Nawalpur, Parsa, Chitwan and Makwanpur. The Narayani river forms a natural boundary to human settlements, leaving the forest area clear of human inhabitants.

Chitwan National Park Weather

Chitwan has a tropical monsoon climate with high humidity all through the year.  You really will notice a change in temperature here, especially if you’ve just come from the cooler mountain areas.  Make sure you keep a bottle of water (or three!) on you at all times!

The area is located in the central climatic zone of the Himalayas, where monsoon starts in mid June and eases off in late September.  There is a lot of rain here, which is what causes the dense jungle and brings huge amounts of wildlife to the area.

The Best Time For A Chitwan Jungle Safari

From October to March, the skies are relatively clear and the average daily temperature is around 25°C.  This is by far the most comfortable time of year to visit Chitwan jungle.

However, the best time to see animals is late January to March , This is when the Phanta grass is slashed down by the villagers, which obviously improves visibility drastically and increases your chances of spotting the wildlife that makes it home here.

We went trekking through Chitwan jungle when the impressive grass was towering above us and it was quite an experience, and we still saw tonnes of wildlife, so don’t let it put you off visiting at different times of year!

How To Get To Chitwan National Park

A Rhino spotted on a jungle safari in chitwan national parl

Kathmandu To Chitwan

Getting from Kathmandu to Chitwan is relatively easy.  To get from Kathmandu to Chitwan you can take the tourist bus that leaves from the Thamel end of Kantipath in Kathmandu at 7.30am.  Make sure you get there with time to spare, so that you can get your bags on the bus and get settled before it leaves.

It should cost around Rs500-Rs600, depending on who you book through.  If you book your bus from Kathmandu to Chitwan through your hostel then it isn’t unusual for them to send someone to take you to the bus, so there is no way you can get lost!

Going from Kathmandu to Chitwan should take around five to seven hours, and there will be comfort stops along the way.  The tourist bus has AC and is a lot more comfortable than the local bus, with plenty of room for your bags and a lot more leg room!

Pokhara To Chitwan

From Pokhara, tourist buses depart from the tourist bus stand at 7.30am and take a similar length of time to reach Chitwan.

It is possible to get from Kathmandu to Chitwan or from Pokhara to Chitwan by local bus and taxi, but it won’t cost much less and will be far less comfortable.

We used local buses a lot while in Nepal, and always loved travelling with the locals and being more immersed in the culture, but we were advised by a Nepalese that local buses aren’t always the safest, with drivers paid to cover ground quickly rather than safely.

When you see the winding mountain roads with no safety bollards you will understand why this is a scary thought! Apparently it’s pretty scary for the drivers too, and it is rumoured that a lot of them drink to steady their nerves before the long journeys.

What To Expect From A Chitwan Jungle Safari

Now that the boring information is out of the way, let’s have a look at what you can really expect from a Chitwan jungle safari.

Chitwan Jungle Safari Tours: Your Options

Working elephants in chitwan, nepal, carrying reeds on their backs and being ridden by workers in the jungle

We opted for a walking jungle safari because we weren’t sure about the treatment of elephants used for the elephant jungle tours.  We recommend that you do some thorough reading on the issue before you decide on the best way for you to see Chitwan jungle.

You have several options available to you when it comes to booking your Chitwan jungle safari.

Elephant Rides On A Chitwan Jungle Safari

You could book a jungle elephant ride, where you get to explore Chitwan jungle on the back of an elephant.  Obviously it sounds pretty amazing, to be up close and personal with these incredible creatures, and the other advantage to this is that you get to ride above the jungle itself, giving you a better chance of spotting some of the wildlife.

The downside is the obvious use of animals for tourism (like we said, do some research and decide what you feel comfortable with).

The other potential downside (again, do your own research), is that we were told the elephant jungle safaris in Chitwan don’t take you across the river to the more dense jungle.  There is plenty of wildlife on the inhabited side of the river, but it may be something to consider if you wanted to be a little more intrepid!

Chitwan Jungle Safari Walking Tour

Another option available is a walking safari in Chitwan jungle.  It is law that two guides accompany you into the jungle for your own protection.  On a walking tour make sure you request to be taken across the river, so that you can explore the dense jungle there.

Jeep Safari Tours

They also do jeep safari tours, though we aren’t really sure how much wildlife you actually see from a loud car racing around the jungle! Especially when our guides were worried that our footsteps were too loud!

How To Book A Chitwan Jungle Safari

It’s very easy to book your jungle safari. Just about everywhere you go will be selling tours, as it’s obviously the best thing to do in Chitwan and the main reason that tourists visit.

If you don’t like the sound of what your accommodation is offering, then just take a walk down the main street and ask around there. Most places will tailor a package to your needs, so make sure you’re clear about what you want to get from your jungle safari.

We booked through our accommodation at Chitwan Village Resort and the guides were experienced and professional throughout the day.

A walking tour for two, with a canoe ride there and back, two guides and a packed lunch (not including water) cost us $80. Prices may vary depending on who you book through, how many people are on the tour and which kind of tour you take.

What Will A Typical Day Be Like?

A traditional wooden canoe used on a chitwan jungle safari

Our Chitwan jungle safari started before sunrise.  We climbed into traditional wooden canoe and were rowed down river in the breaking dawn, with the sounds of the jungle just waking up as our soundtrack.

It was an incredibly magical moment in itself, but as we were spotting various beautiful birds and the odd crocodile tail, we suddenly became aware of something much bigger and more colourful watching us from the bushes.

It was a Bengal tiger.  The guides were just as excited as us, as we watched quietly from the canoe.  It seemed to stalk us down the river, keeping pace with our canoe and weaving in and out of the bushes on the river side.  It an incredible experience, one that will stay with me forever.

The guides predicted that it was an old male, perhaps the very same one that had recently been foraging for scraps in the Tharu village.  Apparently the tigers never cross the river, and they thought this one was too old to hunt and had come in search of an easier food source. Eventually he got bored of us and disappeared into the jungle beyond.

A BENGAL TIGER SPOTTED ON OUR CHITWAN JUNGLE SAFARI

I was thankful that we were getting out of the canoe over the other side of the river to the tiger.

Before we set off on our jungle safari walk, the guides briefed us. If there was a bear or a tiger we were to make ourselves big and stand our ground.  If there was a rhino we should climb a tree. If there was an elephant we were basically screwed.

We were interested to learn that the guides were most afraid of the elephants.  Our older guide told us that years ago, when people still lived inside Chitwan jungle, he used to take tourists to stay in the jungle at the camps. One day they went out for a jungle safari, and when they returned the entire village was ransacked, the villagers all killed by a herd of elephants.  They were terrified of them, and wanted to avoid them at all costs.

A little more cautious than before, we set off through Chitwan jungle, slashing our way through huge grasses.  I felt pretty vulnerable, walking around completely unprotected, knowing that we were very much in the animal’s world here.  Our guides pointed out tiger footprints as we went, though luckily our morning sighting was our first and last of the day.

boats heading into the jungle in chitwan for a safari

We saw deer and picked fresh limes to add to our bottled water.  Our guides pointed out various different types of fauna as we went, knowing everything about the jungle.  The heat was intense and so incredibly humid as we got further into the jungle. It made walking quite hard work.

The guides hushed our footsteps as we rounded the corner and watched as a rhino trotted away through the undergrowth.  We were close enough to make out the armoured plates of his back, and his single horn as he escaped our cameras.

For lunch we climbed a tree that looked over the river and jungle beyond and scanned for wildlife as we ate.  We watched a herd of elephants grazing in the long grass (and were pretty chuffed to be at such a safe distance!).

We also spotted a crocodile over the other side of the river, and our guides were quick to scuttle down the river bank and warn some fishermen who were knee-deep in the murky water.

During the afternoon we covered some different terrain.  There were several paths cut through the long grasses, which we cautiously followed, listening out for any unfamiliar sounds that could signal danger.

As we neared the end of our day the guides pointed out some ant homes that had been destroyed and suggested it could mean a bear had been foraging there.  They were right, and as we rounded a corner we came face to face with a black bear. It was only metres away, happily tucking into an anty dinner.

A BEAR IN THE LONG GRASS IN CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK

My heart felt like it was beating out of my chest, but luckily the bear hadn’t seen us and just carried on eating.  The guides pushed me forward, encouraging me to get a good photo. I didn’t know that behind me they stood poised with their huge sticks in the air, obviously ready to put up a fight should they have to.

Then, as I was shakily trying to focus the camera, the guide’s phone went off on full volume, like something out of a comedy sketch.  Fight or flight kicked in and I got ready to run (the exact opposite of what I was meant to do!)

The bear turned and stared right at us, stood up on its hind legs as though it was preparing to attack, but then seemed to change its mind and went galloping off into the jungle.  I felt as though we had just escaped death, but our guides made us chase the bear, hoping for another glimpse!

Perhaps they aren’t that dangerous after all, or perhaps the guides were happy to get rid of us after a day together in the jungle!  Luckily, it was much faster than us and was nowhere to be found.

We returned by canoe, pretty exhausted but with a camera full of photos and an even greater sense of wonder at this incredible country.

Spotting Tigers

two boats on a chitwan jungle safari in nepal

Tigers are elusive and mysterious creatures, which makes it all the more exciting when you spot them. Unfortunately, though, tiger sightings at Chitwan National Park are incredibly rare and you’ll be very lucky to see one. Our guide informed us that there are usually only a couple of tiger sightings all year, so make sure you go for the other wildlife and not just the tigers.

If it’s tiger sightings that you’re chasing then why not plan your trip around them? There are several places in Nepal and India where tiger sightings are possible, so plan to visit several of these national parks to increase your chances of seeing these magical creatures.

Ranthambore National Park and Panna National Park in India both offer great opportunities for tiger spotting, so split your time between Nepal and India to give yourself a better chance of getting that sighting!

Chitwan Jungle Safari Essentials

Wear dull colours.   This is pretty obvious I guess, but I packed an overnight bag with only some red and black trousers to wear, so I felt pretty stupid when the guide explained about the bright colours scaring away the animals.  Learn from my mistake!

Bring water.   I thought two big bottles of water was plenty, and didn’t want to be lugging around any more than that.  I was wrong, two bottles was not plenty and I was thirsty by lunchtime, trying to ration my dwindling water resources. It is VERY hot in Chitwan jungle, be prepared!

Wear decent shoes.   A pair of walking shoes like this will be perfect.  You need your feet covered, and preferably your legs too.  There are a lot of spiky bushes and grasses out to get you, and you never know when you might need to climb that tree!

Wear sun cream and bring something to cover up.  Most of the time you’ll be in the shade of the trees, but there are times when you’ll be in that boiling hot sun, so make sure you’re sorted just in case.

Bring mozzie repellant.   They are everywhere!

Bring some cash with you .  The ATMs in Chitwan charge you to withdraw, so you can save a bit of money by being prepared.

A SHY LITTLE DEER HIDING IN CHITWAN JUNGLE

Where To Stay For A Chitwan Jungle Safari

FERNS AND BUSHES IN THE CHITWAN JUNGLE

Chitwan Village Resort

We stayed at Chitwan Village Resort and loved it. It’s smaller than a lot of the posher-looking resorts (and cheaper too), they were friendly and welcoming and couldn’t do enough to help us with our stay.

The rooms themselves were basic, with their own bathrooms. There’s a lovely garden with seating areas for relaxing, and it’s a short walk from the main strip so it’s quiet in the evenings.

One of the things we loved about this place is that they didn’t sell elephant jungle safaris when we stayed. I’ve since looked on their website and it now suggests they do. Whether or not this is out of date I’m not sure. We booked a full-day walking tour through them and found the guides outstanding in every respect. We couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

Evergreen Ecolodge

We heard great things about this eco-lodge in Chitwan National Park. It’s committed to being as eco-friendly as possible. Don’t expect luxury, but if you’re happy to embrace the ethos then this is a great forward move in the battle to clean up Nepal.

Where To Eat In Chitwan National Park

Kc’s restaurant.

KC’s is a favourite amongst tourists, with a menu ranging from traditional Nepali cuisine to pizzas and pasta. It’s a good place to head in the colder months as it has a fireplace to warm you.

Friends Café

This rooftop restaurant is a little quirky and very friendly. Come here for an easy going place to hang out at any time of the day, they have plug sockets too so it’s a great place if you need to work! They do mainly Mexican and Italian dishes here.

Sweet Memory Restaurant

A place that prides itself on home cooking. They serve great momos here and lots of different curries. It’s hidden down a side alley so you might have to do a little searching to find it!

Other Things To Do In Chitwan (That Don’t Involve Jungle Safaris!)

A PATHWAY THROUGH THE THICK VEGETATION IN CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK

If you don’t really fancy a Chitwan jungle safari then that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit this incredible place. There are quite a few other attractions here, such as hiring bikes and cycling to a local nature reserve or exploring the cultural village of Tharu. You can read about them and more in our detailed post on the best things to do in Chitwan National Park.

Hopefully this guide has been useful, and we hope you have the most amazing visit to Chitwan National Park. Let us know how you found it in the comments below! If you found this guide useful then follow us on social media for more travel tips and inspiration.

Chitwan National Park: the Centre for Jungle Safari in Nepal

Home to over 700 species, the Chitwan National Park is the best place to go on safari in Nepal

Chitwan National Park – in the Terai lowlands region of Nepal – is one of the top wildlife safari destinations in Asia and home to over 700 wildlife species. These include the extremely rare one-horned rhinos, clouded leopards and Bengal tigers. The subtropical forests and grassy plains cover an area of 952sqkm (367sqmi), contrasting sharply with rugged Himalayan landscapes. If you’re planning a trip to Nepal, it’s certainly worth fitting Chitwan National Park into your itinerary – enjoy our guide to give you a taste of what to expect.

You can spend two nights in a luxury lodge and enjoy a Jeep safari in Chitwan National Park as part of Culture Trip’s exclusive 11-day Nepal trip , led by our Local Insider.

A brief history of Chitwan National Park

Formerly a royal hunting ground, Chitwan National Park became Nepal’s first national park when it was established in 1973 to protect the area’s wildlife from poaching – particularly Bengal tigers and one-horned rhinos, whose populations had been diminished to critically low levels.

In 1984, the park was awarded Unesco World Heritage status and with hunting outlawed, the population of rhinos has more than doubled from around 300 in the 1980s to 694 in 2021 – while the population of Bengal tigers has grown from 40 in the 1980s to around 100 today.

Today, the park is an increasingly popular destination for travellers keen to venture beyond the mountainous regions of Nepal and experience a totally different side to the country, attracting an average of 180,000 annual visitors. The success of its ongoing conservation efforts has earned Chitwan a reputation as one of the best-preserved national parks in Asia – therefore, one of the most biodiverse places on the continent.

Rapti River, Chitwan National Park, Nepal

Animals to look out for in Chitwan National Park

Along with Kaziranga National Park in India, Chitwan is one of only two places in the world with a population of over 100 one-horned rhinos, which, alongside African white rhinos, are the largest of all rhino species. Bengal tigers – the biggest of all big cat species – are also a magnificent sight to behold, if you’re lucky enough to spot one, of course.

It’s not just rhinos and tigers that are worth visiting for, though. Chitwan is home to 68 species of mammals, 126 species of fish, 56 species of reptiles and amphibians and one of the highest concentrations of bird species in the world – over 344 in total, including Indian pittas, Bengal floricans, crested serpent eagles and emerald doves.

If you go on a boat safari on the Rapti River, keep an eye out for gharials – a critically endangered, fish-eating crocodile species, recognisable by its long, thin snout. On game drives, you may also see Asian elephants, gaurs and hyenas in the grasslands – along with sloth bears, wild boars and grey langur monkeys in the jungle. There have even been sightings of cloud leopards on several occasions in recent years – although the chances of encountering one are slim at best.

When to visit Chitwan National Park

October through to March offers the most comfortable conditions for wildlife viewing in Chitwan National Park, with minimal rainfall and daytime temperatures hovering around 25°C (77ºF) on average. January and February are particularly good months for spotting animals as villagers harvest the long grass, making sightings much easier.

April and May – while considerably hotter and slightly wetter – coincide with the end of the dry season and when animals congregate at waterholes, so your chances of spotting a rhino or a tiger are increased. Just be prepared for hot and humid temperatures, often exceeding 35°C (95ºF).

It’s best to avoid the monsoon season between June and September, as flooding is common and wildlife safaris are practically impossible.

How to get to Chitwan National Park

By far the most convenient way to get to Chitwan National Park is by air. With domestic airlines – such as Yeti Air and Buddha Air – you can fly directly from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Bharatpur, which is 6.2mi (10km) outside of the park – and from here, take a taxi to your accommodation. Flights only take 25 minutes from Kathmandu and 20 minutes from Pokhara.

The much cheaper alternative is to travel by bus, which takes between five and seven hours from Kathmandu and a similar amount of time from Pokhara to the village of Sauraha, just outside the park. Tourist buses depart at 7am daily from Sorakhutte – near the Thamel district – in Kathmandu and from Pokhara’s main bus stop.

If you don’t mind spending more for extra comfort, Greenline Tours run a deluxe bus service to Meghauli (on the edge of Chitwan National Park) from Thamel in Kathmandu and lakeside in Pokhara – complete with free Wi-Fi and air conditioning on board, plus a buffet lunch en route. You can book tickets online in advance: check the website for prices at the time of your visit.

If you like to feel your hair stand on end, you could let the adrenaline flow on a white water rafting and wild camping adventure along the Seti River – starting in Damauli and ending up in Gaighat, around an hour’s drive from Chitwan National Park. It’s one of the highlights of Culture Trip’s specially curated 11-day Nepal adventure , led by our Local Insider.

Where to stay near Chitwan National Park

There are no resorts within the boundaries of Chitwan National Park, but there are plenty of options nearby – ranging between luxury lodges and traditional homestays. The main village on the edge of the park is Sauraha – where you’ll find a plentiful choice of accommodation, bars and restaurants and safari tour providers. Green Park Chitwan, Maruni Sanctuary Lodge and Hotel Jungle Crown are among the standout options worth considering.

Meghauli, just 24mi (40km) to the west of Sauraha, is home to a handful of premium retreats, including Barahi Jungle Lodge and Meghauli Serai – both of which have an on-site restaurant and spa, as well as offering a range of wildlife experiences, including Jeep, boat and walking safaris with experienced park rangers.

I went from knowing I was visiting Nepal to seeing 12-15 rhinos, during a Chitwan jungle safari, in just a one week span. I’m feeling like that is pretty good on the spontaneity scale. My knowledge of Nepal was minimal. Here is what I knew beforehand:

  • The location. I’m happy to say I could easily point out this tiny nation sandwiched between India and China on a map.
  • They claim the tallest mountain the world. That’s Mt. Everest for all you fine people that don’t know.
  • Doctor Strange visits there to get his act together.
  • And, that’s it, guys. That’s about all I knew.

Terrible, I know. I did know I definitely wanted to visit sometime for sure but I didn’t expect it to be so soon. When I found out I got the amazing opportunity to do so thanks to the Himalayan Travel Mart, Impact Travel Alliance, and the Nepal Tourism Board, I jumped on it.

Okay, back to the things I didn’t know about Nepal. Rhinos. I also didn’t realize how cool rhinos are until I saw one with my own two eyes. In the wild – that’s key information. And, then I repeated that action a dozen or so more times over two days. And, that was that. I’m a complete Nepal devotee without even seeing Everest.

So, now that I’ve informed you that there are rhinos in Nepal, you want to see them too, right? I’m about to show you how.

What is Chitwan National Park?

Chitwan National Park was the very first national park in Nepal and was formed in 1973. Unfortunately, before it was a national park, Chitwan was prime hunting grounds due to the rampant numbers of one-horned rhinoceros and Bengal tigers.

In 1984, Chitwan National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Chitwan National Park is protected by the Nepali Army. Approximately 800 men and women are stationed at the park at any given time.

Tips before Taking Part in a Chitwan Jungle Safari

Travel safari insurance is an absolute must anywhere but definitely in a jungle in the middle of nowhere.

What to pack? Don’t forget long pants and close-toed shoes for the jungle walks, a scarf or bandana for the dust, rain jacket or umbrella, a Nepal plug adapter , bug repellent, and sunscreen.

Where is Chitwan National Park?

Chitwan National Park is the central southern region of Nepal and sits right on top of the border of India. The park consists of 973 square kilometers (roughly 360 square miles) and in 1996, 760 square kilometers surrounding the park were made an official buffer zone.

How to Get to Chitwan National Park?

Chitwan is part of the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Nepal which consists of Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan.

You can get to Chitwan by air via the Bharatpur Airport – only 20-30 minutes away. The flight to Kathmandu only takes 20-25 minutes.

You can also take a bus from Kathmandu or Pokhara which takes roughly 4-6 hours from either location. I use timeframes here rather loosely.

Looking for an adventure in Pokhara too? The Poon Hill trek is perfect for adventurers and outdoor lovers.

Buses from Kathmandu leave at 7 am (promptly) at Sorhakutte. Tickets cost 600-800 rupees ($8-12).

Buses from Pokhara leave at 7:30 am (promptly) at the main bus station in Pokhara. Tickets cost 600-800 rupees ($8-12).

Where to Stay Near Chitwan National Park?

There are no lodges inside the actual national park and if someone tells you otherwise, I’m fairly certain they’re lying. However, there are many options just outside the park and they all arrange the same activities!

I stayed at Safari Narayani Hotel and I was very pleased with every aspect of the place aside from their elephant activities offered as I’ve already mentioned. I, and several others in my group, expressed our displeasure and notified them that we would not be taking part and those things were taken off the table and they happily organized other activities that were amazing.

Aside from this, Safari Narayani was delightful. The staff was friendly and attentive, the rooms were very nice especially for being in the middle of a jungle, the views were gorgeous, and the vegan food options were accommodating. Every morning, I got up at sunrise and came to sit near the main building. This looked out on the river and the “buffer zone.” Every morning I was greeted by rhinos right in front of the lodge.

On a return trip, I would try out Tiger Tops for their sustainability initiatives and their positive direction in elephant tourism.

Interested in Staying at Tiger Tops? Read Tripadvisor reviews and book your accommodation here.

If you’re not staying at a lodge, then you’re likely staying in the neighboring town of Sauraha. Sauraha is actually where the buses arrive and depart from and there are many accommodations, restaurants, and more here.

Chitwan Jungle Safari

Arguably, the best thing to do in Chitwan National Park is a jungle safari. Traditionally, that has been done in two forms at Chitwan- by elephant and by jeep. I’m going to highlight the jeep safari and why you absolutely should not participate in an elephant safari.

My jeep safari was arranged by the lodge I was staying at and it seems this is how most places operate the jeep safaris – arranged directly through your accommodation. Our jeep picked us up at 2 pm at the lodge where we made the 30 minute bumpy and dusty drive through town to the entrance of Chitwan National Park. We arrived back at the lodge around 6:30 pm so you’re looking at roughly 3-4 hours of actual safari time in the park. The typical cost of a jeep safari is $180 (12500 rupees) per day, per jeep.

I was pretty committed to the possibility of seeing tigers so I would have probably ridden around all day but for most people, I’d say this time frame is plenty if not a little more than needed. Most everyone on my safari seemed to be ready to head back around the 2-3 hour mark.

A Chitwan jungle safari is not an African safari after all. There is a high chance that you will go and see nothing or maybe just birds and deer. However, there is a pretty good chance of seeing rhinos and crocodiles. Monkeys are also possible, maybe even probable.

Elephant Safari and Why You Should Skip It

It’s no secret that elephant riding has been at the forefront of ethical animal tourism campaigns in recent years. I think many people are well aware of the cruelty behind elephant riding and why it should be avoided. However, it is clear that people are still paying for them. My guide in Nepal told me that elephant riding is down 50% in Nepal in the past three years. I’m not sure how true this is but I do know that it is still happening and it’s more than I expected.

Since doing research, I’ve learned that many travelers boycott Chitwan due to this but I don’t think that’s the answer either.

Money is always the answer. Voting with dollars is always the answer. This is no different than how I behave with my eating habits. Do I support the all-vegan establishments as much as possible or the all-vegan brands? Yes, of course. But, do I still buy vegan food at non-vegan establishments or the vegan version of a product from an otherwise non-vegan brand? Yes. Because it shows the brand, the company, the tour operator, whomever – it shows them what you’re willing to spend your hard-earned money on.

So, don’t boycott Chitwan. Nepal relies heavily on tourism dollars and Chitwan is no different. Don’t punish the people for wanting to make a living. They provide what the tourists will pay for. Go there but show them you’d rather spend your money on a jungle walk, a canoe ride, or a jeep safari.

Another point to be brought up here is that it has been claimed that the elephant riding is aiding the amazing conservation at Chitwan. Chitwan really is leading the way in conservation. Rhino numbers are increasing where most places in the rest of the world they’re decreasing. Tiger numbers are also increasing I was told. I can’t stand behind the belief that elephant riding is the cause of this. Elephant riding may just be the method of tourism but tourism itself is the thing that is driving money here. Money is what helps run the park and keep it protected. As long as tourists are paying, there will be money and thus conservation dollars. Elephant riding doesn’t need to be a part of that. Here is a thorough account of elephant tourism – the good and the bad – in Chitwan and how it has helped the conservation efforts.

There is no clear cut answer here but I think there is definitely a better answer.

Tiger Tops is not where I stayed during my trip but I’m loving what they’re doing in terms of revolutionizing the elephant industry in Chitwan National Park. During the tourism decrease following Nepal’s 2015 devastating earthquake, Tiger Tops took it upon themselves to change how they do elephant tourism.  Instead of chaining the elephants, they are now free to roam in an enclosure. Instead of riding them, guests can walk alongside them in the jungle. The mahouts are no longer allowed to use bullhooks or sticks. For more information on that story, read the full article here . This is a prime example of how elephant owners can change their methods and still make money.

For more information on how elephants are trained, a method called “crushing”, please see the description here .

Things to Do in Chitwan National Park

chitwan national park jungle safari

The Chitwan jungle safari may be the first preference for most people but there are several other activities in the park that are worthwhile.

Dugout Canoe Ride

The morning after our arrival, we had an early wake-up call. I was already up at 5 am stalking the river for tigers – yes, seriously. At 7 am, we were all gathered to walk down to the river for our transportation that morning – a dugout canoe. Trying to get into a canoe is probably the most frightening thing I did the whole trip. I’m no first-timer. I’ve been canoeing all my life but I don’t know that I’ll ever succeed at gracefully entering a canoe.

Once on board, we lazily made our way down the river via our not-so-lazy canoe guides who guided the canoes along with long sticks. We were able to enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of the early morning river life – local villagers gathering the tall grass in front of the river, several types of birds perching along the riversides, and one rather close rhino chilling in the riverbank.

Jungle Walk

Our canoe ride literally dropped us off in the middle of the jungle. Only 1.5 hours walk with tigers, rhinos, crocodiles, and bears stood between us and the lodge. Easy peasy.

The jungle walk did indeed last 1.5 hours and, honestly, I think I enjoyed this more than the jeep safari. For one – you felt a bit more vulnerable which I can appreciate. This is a literal jungle and there is no protection between you and a lot of things that could kill you.

During the jungle walk, we were asked to be quiet which was awesome as I was able to just walk through the jungle and absorb everything. We saw rhino footprints, tiger markings on trees, and bones from a deer. While no rhinos were seen on the walk, we did see monkeys, crocodiles, and lots of birds.

I stayed towards the back of the group and near the end, I heard something make a pretty distinct noise. I whipped my head around to ask the guide what it was and he said it was a sloth bear. These guys may look harmless, but apparently, they’re quite aggressive and more dangerous than any other animal there. I never saw it and while I was disappointed – maybe that was a good thing?

How to book a jungle walk in Chitwan National Park

Jungle treks in Chitwan can be anywhere from a couple of hours to several days. I sincerely want to go back one day and do the multi-day treks. Prices for jungle treks range from 1400 rupees to 2500 rupees per day ($20-$35 a day). The Longest Way Home shares a lot of valuable information on booking jungle treks in Chitwan National Park.

Chitwan Jungle Safari – Is a Visit to Chitwan National Park Worth It?

I’ve never been on an African safari and I’m sure nothing compares to it, but even if I had, I’d like to think that I’d find the Chitwan jungle safari and other park activities to be absolutely worth a visit. I will no longer think of Nepal as just mountains and insane Kathmandu city life. Now when I think of Nepal, I can think of the grass as tall as me, the rhinos who greeted me at sunrise, and the invisible but ever-present tigers.

All in all – I was able to see monkeys, a monitor lizard, at least a dozen rhinos, several species of deer, two species of crocodiles, and countless species of birds in just a day and a half.

If you’re headed to Nepal don’t hesitate to add on time in Chitwan National Park. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Sounds incredible. We wish we could have been in Nepal with you. I really love your analogy about buy vegan food in a non vegan restaurant as opposed to an outright boycott. I think voting with your dollars (and pen) is the most effective means we have of making the world a better place.

' src=

I knew about as much as you did, Ashley, about Nepal before reading this. Other than Mt. Everest, I didn’t know there were any other draws for tourists. Seeing rhinos in the wild would probably freak me out a little. Did you see any Bengal tigers? That would be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for me.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement that money talks. We need to support the causes/places that we believe in. Sometimes, that’s the best way to make a statement.

' src=

Ashley, until I read this post there had never been any reason for me to consider Nepal (although my hubby watches every documentary and movie on Everest! and I’ve seen them all!) I was not aware of this jungle nor the possibility about seeing rhinos and tigers. I also really appreciate your opinion on the elephant rides as well. As Everest continues to be crazier and crazier each year, Nepal needs other tourist activities and wildlife is a good alternative if done correctly!

' src=

This is wild! Sadly I’d say my knowledge about Nepal is about on par with yours before you went, haha! But it was great to learn about this park from you, I’ve never seen a rhino up close.

' src=

Loved your analogy of ‘voting with dollars’- I have people in Nepal messaging me all the time about how hard life is there for them, and the income they get is almost completely from Tourism. So to hear this reaffirmed, and then to learn about other opportunities that are there by elephant riding helps me better understand the area and amenities available a bit more.

Omg I love love love love LOVED this post!!!! I’ve been eagerly awaiting the start of your Nepal posts, haha. I think you know this but I’m desperate to return to Nepal and visiting Chitwan is one of the major things I’d like to do. I met multiple Nepali people (including one of our sweet guides) who has family in this region and they all encouraged visiting. Like you, I had no clue that this kind of experience existed in Nepal before I visited! Also I really love what you say here: “So, don’t boycott Chitwan. Nepal relies heavily on tourism dollars and Chitwan is no different. Don’t punish the people for wanting to make a living. They provide what the tourists will pay for. Go there but show them you’d rather spend your money on a jungle walk, a canoe ride, or a jeep safari.” This is really in line with what I felt after doing EBC. The idea of boycotting tourism in Nepal, whether trekking or safaris or whatever it may be, it just way too simplistic. There is definitely an issue with tourism as it stands in Nepal but the answer isn’t to STOP tourism, it’s to CHANGE it. And I think that the Nepali government and people are aware of this, but the responsibility also lies with tourists. And I think you definitely did the right thing during your visit by showing them how you’d rather spend your money than on elephant tours.

Ugh, can you tell this gets me fired up? I’ve got this dream of doing a group trip to Nepal sometime in the next year+, so I’m going to go explore your Tigertops accommodation now 🙂

' src=

Rhinos!!! Love ’em, and so glad that conservation efforts are paying off in Nepal. Didn’t know there were Bengal Tigers there as well, but more awesomeness. I think we mentioned that Nepal is pretty high on our Bucket List, despite the fact that we seem to keep going everywhere but. 😉 I think we’re going to check out Tiger Tops, for sure. But one big question: honestly, what’s the bug situation on the jungle activities? Because I’m never going to get Ann out there if she thinks they’re going to carry her away/bleed her dry.

Chitwan Jungle Safari – Nature’s Rhapsody In Nepal

The conjunction of the stars and planets fell into place and we headed out to experience the marvels of Nepal including the Chitwan Jungle Safari. Probably it was preordained that we experience Nepal along with the Himalayan Travel Mart.

Our earlier plan of visiting Nepal had been literally nipped in the bud when the country was devastated by a massive earthquake in 2015. We had planned to visit the place around that time and were forced to shelve our plans.

But it was indeed a sense of deja vu that we felt as we explored Nepal on an itinerary that seemed to be eerily similar to the one that we had planned four years earlier. First up on our current itinerary was the Chitwan jungle safari at the famed Chitwan National Park.

After reaching Kathmandu late in the night, we started early on a road trip that would take us from Kathmandu all the way to Pokhara which was a little more than 200 kilometres away, if one were to drive directly there, however as we would be halting and enjoying the attractions of Chitwan National Park and Lumbini , the birthplace of Buddha, our journey would actually cover about 533 kilometres.

We filed into the Toyota Mini-Bus that would be our vehicle for the next few days. We were 14 of us from different parts of the world and all meeting for the first time, complete strangers. Little did we realize that by the end of the trip we would start feeling like a big family.

So off we went, breaking the ice with each other, towards our first destination, Chitwan National Park – UNESCO World Heritage Site . The Kathmandu to Chitwan National Park distance was about 169 kilometres and we reached our destination in the late afternoon. But not before halting mid-way for a delightful local Nepali lunch of Dal-Bhat.

Waking Up At The Chitwan National Park

Chitwan jungle safari

The sweet music of a million harps filled the ears. A soothing calm engulfed the mind. A smile came unbidden to the lips and the body was wracked by strange waves of ecstasy. We woke up to this pleasant dream and pushed the window curtains of our cottage at the Jungle Villa Resort .

It was still dark outside, but the darkness was beginning to turn grey. We slipped outside and were met with mellifluous sounds of hundreds of birds waking up to a new day. There is nothing more soothing than waking up to the sweet chirping of birds in the lap of nature.

We wanted to enjoy those precious early morning moments when nature reveals its most pristine form. We rushed to an open-air deck near the restaurant by the side of the river Rapti. There as we sat on wooden chairs sipping steaming hot cups of coffee, nature played out its enthralling symphony.

Jungle Villa Resort Chitwan

The Rapti river meandered by our side. We could see the forests of the Chitwan National Park beyond the river. To our right were emerald fields of elephant grass. The water reflected the cloudy sky with a hint of orange, the sun had already risen but hid shyly behind the clouds.

Chitwan jungle safari

And then far away in the river, we spotted two black shapes. They were the famed one-horned Rhinos of Chitwan, an endangered species and native to the Indian subcontinent.

Rhinos at Chitwan

As we lost ourselves in the magic of the moment, listening to the chirping of birds and feasting our eyes on the stunning riverine landscape that stretched out before us we realized why the Chitwan National Park Nepal was a listed UNESCO World Heritage site.

The spectacular land is considered to be one of the last remaining pristine and undisturbed parts of the “Terai” region that had earlier spanned the foothills of Nepal and India. It is considered as the only surviving example of the unique and natural ecosystems of the ‘Terai’ region.

We could have spent our entire life frozen in the magic of that moment that bordered on the divine. But time and tide wait for none and we had to shake ourselves to come out from the trance that nature had induced on us. After all, it was just the beginning of the day, there were many exciting experiences lined up including the Chitwan safari.

Early Morning Rendezvous With Birds At Chitwan National Park

Chitwan jungle safari

We are not professional ornithologists with a profound knowledge of birds nor are we the kind who can spot and photograph birds in the twinkling of an eye. But we have a passion for nature and the different species of birds that inhabit the earth.

We are satisfied just listening to the sounds of different birds, never mind if we cannot differentiate between the call of an Asian Koel and Indian Cuckoo. We just enjoy and revel in the entire experience of being in the midst of nature and our ears hum in ecstasy at the different assorted sounds of birds that assail it.

Rapti river

We were off early morning. Our walk took us on a path that ran parallel to the Rapti river. We walked through a grove of elephant grass. The grass gently caressed our legs, early morning dew glistening on it. We could hear the sound of birds everywhere. Some seemed familiar and some totally unfamiliar. Different species of Herons and Egrets swooped over the waters of the Rapti river. A flock of Parakeets flew excitedly overhead. Members of the Cuckoo family kept up an incessant symphony that even Beethoven would have envied.

“There goes a Kingfisher, that one is a yellow-footed green pigeon, and that one is a Wooly-necked Stork”. Our guide pointed out various birds, some hidden in the upper reaches of trees and some that chose to take flight just when our eyes located them. A flash of colour here, a spread of wings there and they would be gone into the vastness of the blue skies.

We really enjoyed the excitement of the early morning walk with the cool river breeze gently caressing our cheek, the sounds of the birds serenading us, and the sight of crocodiles floating nonchalantly by in the river.

Chitwan National Park is famous for its birds apart from the Chitwan Jungle Safari. It is home to around 543 species of birds. The ecosystem of the Chitwan National Park is known for having one of the highest concentration of birds in the world and is a designated biodiversity hotspot. Some of the endangered species of birds in the world like Grey Crowned Prinia, Lesser Adjutant, among others have made Chitwan National Park their home.

Chitwan Jungle Safari

One of the attractions for most people if not all is the Chitwan jungle safari. We too love heading out into the jungle. It is always a thrilling experience to move into the jungle, losing oneself in the sounds of the jungle. The pregnant air of anticipation of spotting wildlife must indeed be one of the most exciting experiences that one can have.

Chitwan jungle safari

Chitwan National Park which is spread over an area of more than 900 square kilometres is home to a wide array of fauna. The star attraction is, of course, the one-horned Rhino which number over 600. Most of the core area of the forests are out of bounds for visitors.

Chitwan jungle safaris take visitors into the outer region of the core area only. For those wishing to enjoy the thrills of the Chitwan jungle safari, there are three options to do so. One can head out for a jungle walk with a guide or opt for a Chitwan jeep safari. The third option is to mount an elephant and head into the jungles in search of wild animals.

But as responsible travellers who believe in sustainable tourism , we are against animal tourism and hence we skipped the elephant safari and opted for the Chitwan wildlife safari by means of a jungle walk. We knew that the chances of seeing wildlife including the rhinos at close quarters astride an elephant were much brighter. However, we were fine with not getting close-up pictures of Rhinos and just enjoying the serenity of the jungle.

A Jungle Walk Inside Chitwan National Park

Enchanting Chitwan Jungle Safari | All About Chitwan National Park, Nepal

A jeep dropped us off at the outer fringes of the Chitwan National Park. We were a small group who had opted for the Jungle Walk as we did not want to ride the elephants.

Our guide briefed us about the jungle and also told us what we should do in case we came face to face with a wild animal. He told us the different forms of escape and techniques to use if confronted by a Rhino, Sloth Bear, or Tiger. He advised us to stay together and not lag behind. We looked at each other with the same thought, we knew we would not stand a chance if a wild animal suddenly materialized in front of us! Also, we were not sure our guides and escorts would be of much help either, armed as they were with flimsy sticks!

But our hearts beat loudly and merged with the sounds of the forest. We walked silently in single file behind our guides, wary of the slightest moment in the bushes. We followed the guides deep into the jungle. Suddenly they froze in their tracks and pointed in the distance, a herd of deer gave us a coy look and gambolled shyly away before we could even get our hands on our cameras. A peacock strutted past and disappeared into the trees. Our guides stopped to show us different plants that were used for medicinal purposes and would be of great use if one were lost in the jungle.

We trudged on behind our guides, enjoying the sheer thrill of just being in the jungle. We had done jeep safaris in places like the Pench Tiger Reserve earlier, but this was the first time that we were actually on the ground and treading the same land on which the wild animals moved around. It was exciting and at the same time a terrifying thought. But as luck would have it, we did not encounter any wild animal, no Rhino, Leopard, Bear, or Tiger, just a herd of shy gazelles. But we were happy and contented.

The walk in the wild had enabled us to establish a primordial connection with nature, something that we all miss in the urban centres that we live in. Later we heard accounts of close encounters with Rhinos by those who had gone on an elephant safari, but we did not mind missing out on that as somewhere in the corner of our minds was the image of an elephant with slightly moist eyes.

Safety precautions for the Chitwan Jungle Walk

  • Always walk close to each other in a group and do not lag behind since chances of wild animals attacking a group are unlikely, so essentially there is strength in numbers
  • Always remain silent and avoid making any noise or speaking loudly during the jungle walk
  • Do not get adventurous. Always follow the instructions of the guide at all times
  • It is always advisable to ask the guides first before touching any plants or other vegetation
  • Stay calm and never panic in case of animal encounters
  • If you are confronted with a bear, then avoid making eye contact and also do not run
  • If you come face to face with a tiger, then do not panic and run. Look the tiger in the eye and slowly back off
  • If elephants attack you, run in zig-zag fashion or make a loud noise and try entering a dense forest
  • In case of a Rhino attack, avoid running. Remain still and quickly find some cover like a tree or a bush

Elephant Safari Chitwan National Park

Chitwan jungle safari

If you are looking to enjoy the thrill of a Chitwan Jungle Safari tour, one of the popular options is the Chitwan Elephant Safari. This is offered by most of the resorts that dot the outer fringes of Chitwan Nepal. Also, one can get close to the elephants and bathe with them.

Bathing with Elephant

It was early morning, must have been around 5.30 AM and the eastern skies were just brightening up. We were out again to enjoy the morning magic when an elephant silently slipped past us towards the river. It was the safari elephant. A large group of visitors whom we had spotted the day before at the restaurant was accommodated on two elephants.

About 4-5 on each elephant sitting on a platform on the back of the elephant with the Mahout riding in the front. The elephant with its burden waded straight into the river, crossing the river to walk with its human cargo into the jungles of Chitwan National Park. As the elephants slowly disappeared from sight, we heard the cheerful singing by one of the visitors who were obviously so moved by the serenity of the environment that he broke into a romantic Bollywood number. It was just another day in paradise for him and his group but the same could not be said of the elephants.

It may be argued that elephants are the best way to head deep into the jungles as opposed to jeeps. That the elephants are well fed and well looked after. Of course, they are and there is no doubt about it. But how many of us would be ready for a life that offered food and shelter along with a chain? How many of us would be ready to sacrifice our basic freedom and do as per the bidding of our ‘master’? How many of us would be willing to bear the burden of others on our backs?

These are questions that one needs to answer for oneself before embarking on an elephant safari. It is a well-known fact that the spirit of the elephants need to be broken before they can be tamed and that is why female baby elephants are first trained and then tamed.

There are many options to enjoy the Chitwan Jungle Safari and the treasures of the forest. The wealth of the forest is unlimited and it showers its riches on those who care to experience it in harmony with the flora and fauna.

A Canoe Ride In The Chitwan National Park

Canoe ride at Chitwan

Chitwan translates as, “heart of the jungle”, but for us, the place was more of a “Chitchor”, which translates as “stealer of hearts”. Indeed Chitwan with its spectacular beauty stole our hearts. The breathtaking tapestry of riverine forests and grasslands along with the rich bio-diversity makes Chitwan a unique eco-system in the world. One of the best ways to experience this pristine eco-system is by cruising along the river in a canoe. This is one of the top things to do in Chitwan, Nepal and that is what we did during our stay at the Jungle Villa Resorts at Chitwan.

Chitwan

We gently and gingerly stepped into the long and sleek canoe one at a time. The canoe made by a single log of wood has just enough width for a single person to sit. There were small chairs placed inside the canoe and we placed ourselves on them in a single file.

Then we moved into the waters. It was almost as if we were floating on water, the water was that close to us on either side. Some of us did have the terrifying thought of floating with crocodiles as the river was the natural habitat of crocodiles. We saw the proud snouts of many a crocodile floating past us, but luckily not too close for comfort.

Rhino at Chitwan

The Canoe ride is indeed one of the Best Things to Do in Chitwan, apart from the Chitwan Jungle Safari. You seem to be in a different world as you silently float in the waters. On one side stretches the riverine forests while on the other are the grasslands. A tableau of nature is unveiled on the banks of the river. We spotted birds going about their daily rituals, a Kingfisher here, an egret there, crocodiles moving stealthily in search of an unsuspecting quarry.

We then spotted a one-horned Rhino chilling in the cool waters of the river. He was submerged in the water, bar the upper portion of his torso. He was lost in his own world and oblivious to our presence as we glided past it. Our experience of canoeing in Chitwan left us feeling elated.

Village Walk And Interaction With The Tharu Community

Village Walk

The jungle and humans always have a symbiotic relationship. The people who live on the fringes of forests learn to live in harmony with the forests. One such community living in the outer periphery of the Chitwan National Park is the Tharu community. The Tharu people have historically lived in the Terai region.

They are found In the northern states of India like Uttarakhand and Bihar as well as in Nepal. The actual origins of the community are shrouded in myth, however, a group known as Rana Tharu believe that they originate from the distant lands of the Thar desert in Rajasthan .

We visited one of the small villages inhabited by this community just outside the fringes of the Chitwan National Park. It was interesting to see a slice of their everyday life. A group of kids sat on a mat, ostensibly catching up on their school homework. A close look at the books and we found that the textbooks were in English. Women went about their daily chores while some men lounged in the shade of their huts.

Dance performance at Jungle Villa Resort

Later in the evening, the women folk presented a scintillating program of dance. The energetic and vigorous dance moves evoked memories of Dandiya Ras of Gujarat and Rajasthan .

About Chitwan National Park

Chitwan jungle safari

The Chitwan National Park was established in 1973. It was formerly known as Royal Chitwan National Park. Historically the place was a dense forest and in the late 19th century had become popular with the Royalty and its visitors as being an excellent place for big game hunting. It is thought that earlier there were as many as 800 Rhinos among other wild animals.

But the hunting expeditions took its toll and hundreds of rhinos, tigers, bears, leopards, and other animals met their nemesis. However with the establishment of the National Park and the sustained efforts of all stakeholders, today the Chitwan National Park is a thriving eco-system, one of the last of its kind in the world and hence a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Chitwan National Park which is naturally bounded by the rivers Rapti and Narayani is today home to a vast variety of flora and fauna apart from being a sanctuary to some of the rarest birds in the world. More than 68 species of mammals are found here including the Bengal Tiger. More than 543 species of birds are found in the Chitwan National Park. The eco-system also attracts a large number of migratory birds both in winter and summer.

Where To Stay In Chitwan National Park – Chitwan Hotels

There are plenty of hotels in Chitwan and resorts as well. Chitwan National Park hotels dot the outer fringes of the forest separated only by the Rapti river. So there is no dearth of Chitwan National Park hotel accommodation and there are hotels in Sauraha Chitwan and other areas in the vicinity of the National Park.

Jungle Villa Resort

We stayed in a beautiful property called Jungle Villa Resort , one of the best hotels in Chitwan. It is located on the edge of the river Rapti on the fringes of the Chitwan National Park.

Jungle Villa Resort Chitwan

The property has beautiful, luxurious, modern cottages that blend harmoniously with the environment. The cottages are built on two levels and have balconies and sit-outs that provide an excellent view of the river and the forest beyond.

Chitwan jungle safari

Our favourite place apart from our cottage at our Chitwan Resort was the deck where one could simply spend hours looking out over the flowing river and catching the movement of wildlife in the distance.

Chitwan jungle safari

The food was also excellent with service that epitomized typical Nepali warmth and hospitality. The resort also arranges activities including the Chitwan jungle safari, village walk, bird watching tour, canoe ride, etc.. The Jungle Villa Resort is a great place to wake up Chitwan.

All good things come to an end, and so did our short but sweet stay at the Chitwan National Park. We wished we could have stayed longer and experienced the treasures of the forest a little more. But then we had to move on and we promised ourselves that we would be back to lose ourselves in the magic of Chitwan again.

That sounds like an amazing experience. You are so lucky to have seen the Rhino up close like that in its own environment. I think the close encounter with the crocodile sounds a bit scary though – you seem to take it so calmy!

Wow guys! Amazing. Chitwan has long been on my list, ever since I watched nature shows profiling the park as a kid.

There is only one thing in this world that can woo me and that’s nature… These pictures make me go awww! I so wish I could visit Nepal and Chitwan national park… It’s really beautiful! ❤

Chitwan morning sounds lovely! I must be awesome sipping a hot cup of coffee in a cool morning as you experience nature unfolding before your eyes. What lovely experience you had! Chitwan definitely sounds a great adventure!

I envy you. So many places you go and discover unique places. Take me next time with you.lol.

Anyways, love the post and pictures.

I am so glad that you mentioned the opposing views of riding an elephant. I see why some people do a safari by elephant, because like you mentioned, it is easier to get up close to animals without scaring them away. But like you also said, a life in chains where you are restrained to the bidding of a master is not much of a life at all. I am glad you guys chose to do the walking safari 🙂 It still seemed like a great experience and staying in that lodge still alowed you to see some beautiful birds and the one-horned rhinos in the distance!

I haven’t been in Nepal. Also, I didn’t know there’s a safari on this country. I really want to visit Chitwan Jungle Safari soon and enjoy the nature and see the wildlife.

Now this is where the travelers like you make a difference. Since you inspire others to follow your path you have shared something very unique here . You have shared a way to enjoy national park by skipping the elephant Safari. I really respect the decision you took when you got this option in front of you . You are right that the chained life is no justice to elephants. I realized it when I had similar situation at Assam Manas National Park. The elephants after safari ,were taken for bathing and later chained . Here you present a way to enjoy safari without elephant tour . Huge respect to you and your decision 💪

Staying here is a wonderful experience. The place has too much history and that we have lots to learn from it. It looks so peaceful making it a great destination to unwind. We hope to get a chance to visit in the future and appreciate this natural ecosystem.

Nepal is such a beautiful country. It is really great that your Nepal itinerary was closely similar to the one you had planned. We missed visiting Chitwan National Park on our last visit to Nepal. It looks a wonderful place in the midst of nature. The photographs are lovely.

You explored Chitwan National Park in so many ways! You explain the difference I seeing and feeling from the walk, elephant ride and canoe and make it clear each is worth it. I love UNESCO World Heritage Sites so glad to hear that this one in Nepal presents a unique eco system. Plus how fun to see rhinos just across the river like that!

Such a wonderful read. Travel is like that breath of fresh air that makes life worth it. Its very important to travel as much as u can n imbibe.

I am in Kathmandu right now and your post nearly made me book a taxi for Chitwan National Park. However, since the rains are here I realize that the plan should be shelved for the next visit. The detailed writing of your experience and well structured post provides an answer to every possible question one may have in mind. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it till the last word. Bravo!

Wow!! What an elaborately described article. It is always a pleasant pleasure to read such articles non stop without a break.

This is such a detailed post. I had a great time exploring Chitwan National Park in Nepal. I loved the boat ride and those tall elephant grass. You have covered every aspect of the safari experience so beautifully. Loved reading about it.

Jeep Safari in Chitwan National Park

  • Chitwan Jeep Safari

chitwan national park jungle safari

One of the options to see the wildlife in Chitwan national park is to go on a jeep safari. During this trip you will sit in de back of an open jeep to see the animals. The driver will stop to show places and animals. You will have a great opportunity to get some good pictures this way.

During the trip, the guide will hang at the back of the vehicle to spot animals. He will also give information about the environment and the wildlife.

To do the Jeep safari you get two options:

The first option is a short safari. This will take about 4 hours and you are in the jeep with a maximum of 7 persons. With your back you will sit to the side of the jeep. This safari will start around 13.00 p.m. and finishes around 17.00 p.m.

The second option is a full day safari. The jeep is more comfortable as you have better seats and a private car. This trip will start early in the morning and you will finish around the same time as the short drive. With this trip you will go deeper in the jungle and here you will have more chance to see tigers. During this trip, the lunch will be eaten in the jungle itself.

Don’t be afraid, you don’t have to catch your own food.

Tip: During a jeep safari you should not wear bright colors. This will scare the animals so off white, Black, grey, dark green are preferred.

How Dangerous are Tigers?

Do you like Big Animals?  We collected ideas on the Best Places to see Hippos , Elephants , Giraffes , or Rhinos .

That is why wild animals respect them. But if a trainer, for example, stumbles and loses his position of power, it can become dangerous even for him. Also, to strange tigers, he would not dare to enter the cage. By the way, in the wilderness, animals only rarely attack humans. If, for example, a shark hurts a surfer, it is only because he mistakes him for a seal. You can see this because, unlike its usual prey, it does not eat it.

Nevertheless, some people can go into a tiger or lion cage without being attacked, for example, tamers in the circus. They know their animals well and are something like the leader.

For Tiger, a human being is a big animal. And when an animal is in its enclosure, the tiger wants to hunt it because he has an innate hunting instinct.

Approximately 100 people die every year due to attacks by tigers. Probably, humans are often to blame for this themselves because they provoke the animals.

Tigers in Zoos and National Parks

The consequences for the animals are fatal: Massive damage to their health, severe behavioral disorders, and increased mortality.  This Tiger Safari or Tour guide should highlight only sustainable places to go.

  • Perform feats for which they are often trained by force,
  • Have to change venues 50 times a year on average,
  • Spend most of their time in small cages, inadequate enclosures, or in the transport wagon,
  • That essential species-specific behavior such as social contacts or movement are considerably restricted or made completely impossible,
  • that they have little variety or occupation,
  • that they are often not fed and cared for appropriately,
  • That veterinary control or care is often inadequate because there are only a few specialized veterinarians for wild animals nationwide or the circus cannot or will not afford the treatment financially,
  • that in many cases the circus operators lack the necessary expertise,
  • that there is no fixed winter quarters during the play-free period. Only about every tenth company can call a winter accommodation its own.

Nevertheless, animals of wild species can still be seen in many circus operations that travel around the world: Tigers, lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, sea lions or monkeys – the range of animal species carried along is extensive. Wild animals suffer in the circus. They suffer massively, because:

Wild animals make exceptionally high demands on their keeping and accommodation. In a circus enterprise, responsible keeping wild animals is generally impossible.
