Both warnings for snow and rain are in place until 9am and have affected train services and roads up and down the country.

Due to flooding on the line, ScotRail confirmed that services between Glasgow and Edinburgh will be cancelled on Friday morning.

Stirling is a historic city in central Scotland, located on the River Forth. The city is often nicknamed the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ because of its close proximity to major Highland attractions like Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and Loch Lomond. Stirling is steeped in Scottish history for you to explore and was once one of the principal royal strongholds of Scotland.

Today, Stirling benefits from the buzz of a young population. The city is alive with energy and is a truly fantastic place to visit, with many fun things to do, including Stirling Castle, Church of the Holy Rude, and Doune Castle.

So fantastic, in fact, that we’ve put together a list of great activities to make your visit even more eventful.

In This Post

Things to do in Stirling

Stirling is a vibrant city with a lot to offer. From historical sites, outdoor activities, architecture, and family fun, there is plenty to do on your visit.

If you’re here with the family, with a partner, or solo travelling, Stirling has what you need.

Need some convincing? Take a look at our list of the top things to do in Stirling down below and get the most out of your holiday here.

Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is a stunning landmark that dates back to the Middle Ages.

The castle is visually dominating and a shining example of Renaissance architecture that’s located near the very heart of Stirling city centre.

The castle — one of the largest and top attractions in Scotland — sits atop a 250ft extinct volcano. Steep cliffs surround it on three sides, giving it a strong defensive position. From over the high stone walls, you can view the battlefields of Stirling Bridge, where ancient armies clashed. Its walls also have plenty of rooms to explore, including the Chapel Royal, the Regimental Museum, the Great Hall, and many attractions for young ones.

Several Scottish monarchs have been crowned at Stirling, and its Royal Palace , including Mary Queen of Scots, was crowned here in 1543 when she inherited the throne.

You can also see amazing views out to the River Teith and the city centre on your visit. Your visit to Stirling is not complete without seeing this incredible landmark of Scottish Independence up close. Be sure to pick up a little piece of memorabilia from the gift shop once you’re done!

The National Wallace Monument

Another treasure of Stirling is the Wallace Monument — a grand stone tower which overlooks the city.

This beloved landmark stands tall on a hilltop and commemorates Sir William Wallace . Here, the thrilling story of this 13th-century hero comes to life.

Staff at the Wallace Monument are passionate and really know their stuff. If you’re not impressed by the monument’s history (which we think you will be) , the views from the top of the tower will take your breath away.

Another absolute must-see out of all the great things to do in Stirling for couples and families, so don’t miss out!

David Stirling Memorial

A memorial to the founder of the Special Air Service, David Stirling.

David was a fascinating and inspirational Scottish officer who saw active service during the Second World War.

The memorial stands on a bit of high ground and offers utterly gorgeous views from its peak . It’s one of the top free things to do in Stirling.

Church of the Holy Rude

This medieval parish church was founded in 1129, during the reign of David I.

It is the second oldest building in Stirling, right after the castle. The church is located next to the castle and has a long history of hosting royal coronations and baptisms.

The church is beautiful, with its old stones and jewel-coloured stained glass windows. It has a lot of character , and the architecture is really something to see.

If you want to learn more, the guides are knowledgeable and happy to help.

Out of all the things to do in Stirling, an afternoon spent here will be among the most pleasantly peaceful.

Old Stirling Bridge

A lovely 15th-century bridge that arches over the River Forth.

Located near where William Wallace fought in the Battle of Stirling Bridge, it is easy to reach. The bridge is beautifully designed and, unsurprisingly, has been photographed often.

If you’re looking for an impressive backdrop to your own pictures, consider visiting Old Stirling Bridge.

This now-ruined Renaissance townhouse was probably a very beautiful building in its day.

500 years ago, the keeper of the castle – John Erskine, the Earl of Mar – and his family lived here.

Wark is a Scots word for work, which here also means building. The house is also known as ‘Mar’s Lodging’.

Robert the Bruce Statue

Located at the entrance to Stirling Castle, the iconic Scottish figure stands tall in bronze.

The statue overlooks the Wallace Monument , which stands off in the distance on Abbey Craig.

Get a great photo of the statue and the monument together and soak in the history they represent.

Beheading Stone

An ordinary-looking stone with a rather sinister past.

High up on a hill looking out on the River Forth is the Beheading Stone. Local legend tells the tale of the 15th-century beheadings carried out upon it.

If you find dark histories fascinating and don’t mind the climb up the hill, it’s well worth a visit.

Star Pyramid

This unusual landmark – built by William Drumond in 1863 – really stands out from the rest.

The Pyramid is dedicated to the people who suffered martyrdom for the cause of civil and religious liberty in Scotland.

The odd shape and dark stones of the monument draw the eye. If you’re wandering around near the castle consider taking a minute to see it.

Doune Castle

This magnificent 14th-century courtyard castle invites people of all ages to get imaginative.

Discover the new nature trail on this castle’s grounds. Enjoy the audio tour of the castle, narrated by none other than Terry Jones of Monty Python.

The tour teaches you all about the castle’s history and its past residents. As well as great stories about the making of Monty Python and the Holy Grail – which was filmed at the castle.

If Monty Python isn’t enough to draw you in, the striking 100ft tall gatehouse just might. It includes the grand Lord’s Hall, which holds a musician’s gallery and a double fireplace.

Lots to see here! No wonder it’s a favourite on our list of great things to do in Stirling.

Dumyat is a hill at the western extremity of the Ochil Hills.

It may be relatively small in size, but Dumyat forms an important part of the scenery of Stirling.

It also overlooks such landmarks as the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle, which makes it a popular climb.

Dumyat has two principal summits: Dumyat proper to the East and Castle Law to the West. Both walks offer stunning views and a pleasant yet challenging climb to the top.

Dunblane Cathedral

This gorgeous old cathedral is a patchwork quilt of architecture.

The lower half of the tower is pre-Romanesque and dates back to the 11th century. It was originally free-standing and had an upper section added in the 15th century.

The rest of the building is Gothic and from the 13th century. In 1889-93. It was restored by Rowand Anderson.

A must-see for anyone looking to admire some architecture.

Bannockburn House

This 17th-century house has remained largely unchanged, with the exception of a Victorian extension.

In 2017, the local community bought the house and surrounding grounds after over 50 years of dormancy.

The house is being repaired and conserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Passionate volunteers run a programme of tours, events and open days.

Gillies Hill

This hill may look like any other at first sight – but it is a significant historical location for Scotland.

Gillies Hill is the hill from which Robert the Bruce’s camp followers descended to join the battlefield in 1314.

These brave fighters – known as the Gillies – fought in the historic Battle of Bannockburn.

This iconic battle was the turning of the tide for Scotland. It was followed by nearly 400 years of Independence.

Truly a must-see for the Scottish history buffs.

Carron Glen

There are lots of things to do in Stirling that bring you closer to nature. Carron Glen is a particularly beautiful one.

The lush native oak and ash woodland are located along a steep-sided gorge carved by the River Carron.

The branches are bursting with woodland birds. The clear-flowing river offers prime fishing for dippers and kingfishers. The views of the gorge and ancient woodlands are spectacular.

What’s not to love?

A hidden treasure of natural beauty.

The tranquil quiet, the scent of fresh air and earth, and the stunning views of the glen – it’s captivating.

Alva Glen is beautiful, lush, and very romantic.

A walk here is one of the loveliest things to do in Stirling together.

Blair Drummond Safari Park

If you’re looking for somewhere to spend the whole day as a family, this is the place for you!

Blair Drummond Safari Park is a place close to many hearts and the site of countless great family days. The spectacular visitor attraction opened in 1970 and has delighted kids and kids at heart ever since.

The park is home to over 350 animals — many of which wander freely — including giraffes, lions, elephants, tigers and meerkats.

You can walk with free-roaming lemurs in Lemur Land and watch the fantastic sea lion and bird of prey shows. Then hop on the boat to Chip Island – all included in the price of the ticket!

It’s no wonder this is one of Scotland’s top tourist attractions. If you want even more natural wildlife, the Trossachs National Park is a gorgeous place to enjoy Scotland’s countryside.

Cambuskenneth Abbey

Another fascinating historical site in Stirling is this ruined Augustinian monastery, located not far from the River Forth.

Largely reduced to its foundations, the abbey had a distinctly eerie atmosphere.

Royalty has been known to pray regularly at the abbey on its hay day, including Edward Longshanks and Robert the Bruce.

Cambuskenneth Abbey is the final resting place of King James III and his wife Margaret of Denmark. This couple’s union resulted in Orkney and Shetland becoming part of Scotland.

Stirling Old Town Jail

Take a trip back in time and learn about the sinister history of crime and punishment in the Royal Burgh of Stirling.

The incredible live performances that take place here are interactive and deeply spooky. Not surprising for one of Scotland’s most haunted cities.

The characters are a brilliant blend of terrifying and fascinating – with figures such as ‘The Happy Hangman’, murderers, martyrs and more.

If you can keep your nerve long enough to reach the top of the Observation Tower, stunning views await.

Without a doubt, one of my personal favourites out of all the great things to do in Stirling. History buffs and lovers of all things macabre will not be disappointed!

This gorgeous green space is just a short walk from the town centre.

The park has a great little play area for young kids and a skate park for the older kids. There are tennis courts, a charming cafe, and plenty of open space for a stroll or a picnic.

With the beautiful backdrop of the castle, Kings Park is a particularly romantic spot.

The Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre

If you’ve ever wanted to follow the footsteps of Robert the Bruce and experience Medieval combat, then look no further than the Battle of Bannockburn Experience. This digital recreation of this historic battle is one of the most interesting things to do in Stirling, Scotland.

The experience allows you to experience how the two kings of the battle strategised and how the warriors and knights of the battle became embroiled in the conflict. Come and experience a crucial combat of Scottish history at its very heart.

While the Battle of Bannockburn is a thrilling endeavour, it’s not one we’d recommend for all the family.

Macrobert’s Arts Centre

This excellent multi-arts venue is situated in Stirling University’s main campus.

They offer a range of experiences and events. Including cinema, comedy, dance, exhibitions, music, opera, theatre and more.

This thriving arts centre is for everyone, so make sure to stop by on your visit to Stirling.

The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum

This is a budget-friendly and knowledge-packed day out. With free admission and a chance to explore the rich cultural history of Stirling.

This Victorian museum and art gallery is home to more than 40,000 objects and art pieces. They celebrate the people, heritage and culture of the city.

A truly impressive collection ranging from prehistoric whale bones to Roman pottery and much more.

Learn about great figures, including William Wallace, Bonnie Prince Charlie, King James VI, and Robert the Bruce. Dress up with the kids in costumes. Explore the wonderful garden and outdoor exhibits.

There’s plenty to see here!

Cambus Pools

This lush wetland reserve is located on the Inner Forth estuary in the surrounding countryside. The area of land may be small, but it is a vital habitat for local wildlife.

The grassland and clear open waters attract waders, warblers and wildfowl (oh my), as well as reed buntings.

The Cambus Pools also offer stunning views of the Upper Forth River and the Ochil Hills.

Of all the great things to do in Stirling for lovers of nature, this one is probably my favourite.

Plean Country Park

This beautiful parkland is located in the ground of the now-ruined Plean House.

Highly recommended for all those who like to wander. There are some enchanting trails, some which weave through the parkland and others which lead to treasures.

Treasures like an old house and stables, an adventure playground, ponds, and even some WW1 training trenches.

One of the trails leads to somewhere the locals have nicknamed Heart Attack Hill. The climb is a steep one so the hill is pretty aptly named. But it’s doable!

At one point, the forest opens up onto an open paddock where deer graze. If you can stay nice and quiet you can admire them from afar.

This beloved park is one of the most lovely and tranquil of all the things to do in Stirling on our list.

Kidz Town Role Play Centre

Fun for the kids that’s a little bit outside of the box.

Kidz Town is a children’s play town with 14 incredible role play locations. There’s a fire station, a police station, a hospital, an old town market and more.

Here, the kids can play while they learn. Let their imagination fly free.

There are also mermaid and pirate-themed party rooms and a lovely sensory room.

Plenty here to keep them occupied while you relax in the cafe.

Unwind and have a ball with family and friends at AMF Bowling Stirling.

The bowling lanes are fantastic, there’s food and drink to satisfy everyone and a thrilling amusement area.

The atmosphere is electric – you and your group will have a brilliant time here.

A stirling day trip: 13 cool things to do in stirling.

Most people who visit Stirling come here for two reasons: Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. They stop here on their way from Edinburgh to the Highlands, tick off the main attractions and get back on the road – but like so many other Scottish cities, Stirling deserves much more attention! All you need is to plan a day trip and fill it with these 13 cool things to do in Stirling!

This post contains affiliate links from which I may make a commission. Find out more here . All opinions are my own.

Stirling is one of those notoriously underrated cities in Scotland. I had been twice before, but – surprise, surprise – never really saw more than the Castle myself. This trip would be different!

Below I’ll share what to do in Stirling – you can fit them all into one day trip – and of course some info on getting to and getting around Stirling.

Table of Contents

How to get to Stirling

Stirling is located in the Central Belt of Scotland and you can reach it  by train from Glasgow or Edinburgh within 30-40 minutes – so, leave your car at home or don’t even rent one!

It’s central location makes it a brilliant day trip destination when you’re on a city break, but it is also a great hub to access the rest of Scotland in all directions. Whether you hop from city to city, want to explore the Trossachs and the Highlands or want to go off the beaten track to the Cairngorms and the east coast, you can reach pretty much anywhere in Scotland within just a few hours by public transport. As such, it is also a great place to base yourself, if you want to do a lot of day trips around Scotland!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

Map of Stirling

Stirling is an incredibly walkable city – the only place you’d really want to take the bus to is the Wallace Monument, as it’s a 40-minute walk out of town.

When you arrive in Stirling you can make your way to the Visit Scotland information, half-way up the Castle hill, and pick up a city map, or you can like me simply wander around – it is pretty hard to get lost in Stirling!

You can also find all the places I include in this list of things to do in Stirling on the map below:

13 cool things to do in Stirling

#1: the argyll & sutherland highlanders regimental museum.

Disclaimer: My visit to the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Museum was part of a sponsored campaign.

When it comes to Scottish history, few places are as significant as Stirling and Stirling Castle. I never took myself for a military history geek, but a visit to the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Museum showed me that military history is anything but old and dusty – if it’s told the right way!

The museum tells the story of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Regiment , one of Scotland’s proudest regiments in the British Army. It was recently re-opened after undergoing a huge effort to renovate the building and modernise the exhibition. The curators wanted to preserve the rich history of the regiment for future generations, but also re-imagine how these stories could be told in an engaging way.

Each gallery of the museum focuses on a different aspect of the history and context around the military regiment, and wraps the sometimes dry facts of warfare, weaponry and accolades up in the personal stories of the people who lived through it.

My favourite story? The one where the regiment’s mascot Shetland pony Cruachan was demoted for biting the Queen… Or the one of the soldier who wrote a beautifully decorated love letter to his girlfriend asking her to marry him. You’ll need a tissue for that one.

When you hear the human stories behind the uniforms, military history is all of a sudden much more relatable. The museum is an absolute must-see and entry is included in your ticket for Stirling Castle.

#2: Stirling Castle

When it comes to the best Scottish castles to visit, there is no way around Stirling Castle. Stirling has always been one of the most significant castles in the country. Countless Scottish Kings and Queens have been crowned here, including Mary Queen of Scots. Its significance went thus far that if you were in charge of Stirling Castle, you held the key to Scotland.

As such, the castle has been fought over for many centuries – from the Scottish Wars of Independence (and some famous dude called William Wallace) to an unsuccessful attempt to take the castle by Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Today, the castle offers a much more tranquil setting and a great opportunity to learn about Scottish history and medieval architecture. A tour around the castle begins at the top of Castle Hill from where you can enjoy fantastic views of the city and surrounding hills. Inside the thick castle walls, you can wander the Royal Palace and see the kings and queens’ quarters. The heart of the castle is without a doubt the Great Hall, which has been restored and painted yellow, just as it would have looked many centuries ago.

Other highlights include the walk around the castle wall, the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Museum and the beautiful flower gardens.

#3: The Engine Shed

Scotland is a history geek’s paradise – there are so many historical buildings to discover, from medieval castles to modern palaces, traditional blackhouses and ancient ruins, and of course wonders of modern architecture and technology. But how are they maintained?

This is the question Scotland’s Building Conservation Centre at The Engine Shed in Stirling is trying to answer. Opened in 2017, the centre is a mixture of education space and hand-on museum. A film introduces you to the mission of the centre as well as some of the modern technologies that are used to scan historical buildings and structures in Scotland. These scans are then used to create 3D models which are essential to maintain and conserve these buildings for the future.

In the great museum hall you learn about the methods and techniques to conserve different kinds of materials used in Scotland’s historic buildings through hands-on activities. The highlight of the museum though is the augmented reality experience at the centre of the hall – with an iPad you can swipe across a giant map of Scotland and “visit” different historic buildings across the country, look at 3D models, photos and learn about their conservation!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

#4: Local shopping

Many Scottish people come to Stirling to go shopping – but there is more than the shopping centre and high street shops!

Definitely check out Made in Stirling – a sprawling shop that sells products by local artists, makers and designers. You’ll find quirky designs and cool artwork next to locally inspired jewellery, soaps and gifts. Shopping here you can be certain that you’re supporting the creative scene of the city and wider region.

Another lovely shop is Calluna – a small independent shop that sells plants, sustainable designs, fair-trade products and responsible gift ideas. The owner was immediately up for a chat and talked me through their selection of products. My favourite were by far all the different bamboo socks by thought, a sustainable fashion label – I just loved all the different patterns you could get!

#5: Doorporn

I’m a sucker for #doorporn – you know if you follow me on Instagram … Almost nothing makes for a prettier photo, than a colourful door in an otherwise potentially grey city.

I put my phone away for this, so I couldn’t look at my map, and simply followed every lane and street that took my fancy – and around every corner I found more colourful doors to photograph!

I can’t decide whether my favourite was this yellow door on the left, or the building on the left – if you look closely, you’ll see that it’s the Boy’s Club building and it tells you to “keep smiling” above the window to the left! Maybe that’s the one time where I didn’t mind being told to smile!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

#6: Church of Holy Rude

The Church of Holy Rude is Stirling’s second oldest building after the castle. The medieval church was built in the 15th century, but it was founded centuries before that in 1129. The name of the church sounds a little weird nowadays, but it actually means ‘Church of the Holy Cross’.

While I couldn’t visit the church’s interior on the day I spent in Stirling, I loved roaming the cemetery behind it. There are numerous stone crosses and intricate gravestones to discover. The best thing about the cemetery though is the view. Make sure you climb the little hill at the centre for the best views across to Stirling Castle and out over the surrounding hills of the city.

#7: Vegan Food in Stirling

Admittedly, there are no vegan restaurants in Stirling, and you can’t compare it to the likes off Glasgow or Edinburgh, but there are a few vegan options in Stirling.

For lunch head to Cafe Aina , a restaurant int he historic heart of Stirling with a Greek menu and lots of vegan options. I had a vegan souvlaki wrap and loaded fries with vegan Greek cheese and sun-dried tomatoes.

#8: Viewpoint hunting

Even though  a visit to the Wallace Monument was not on my itinerary for this day trip – it was simply too far from Stirling city centre for such a short winter day – I wanted to get a good view of it. Here are a few of the viewpoints I found along the way, although I’m sure there are so many more I didn’t find!

Stirling railway bridge | Before you head into Stirling’s city centre, take a moment to stroll across the bridge over the railway station – the views of the monument from the end closer to the river Forth are incredible!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

Darnley Park | There is a playground in this little park which lies on the hill towards the castle, next to a few residential buildings. Have a walk along the little wooden path – the views are super pretty!

St Mary’s Church | I stumbled across this church on my hunt for pretty doors and found the view of the monument really pretty!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

Castle Hill | Probably the one view to the monument most visitors to Stirling will see is from the Castle Hill right below Stirling Castle.

Lover’s Walk | My favourite view to the Wallace Monument was definitely from the shores of the river Forth. The walkway along the river is called Lover’s Walk (what a suitable name) and as it meanders around Stirling’s city centre it offers a variety of views from different angles!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

Gowan Hill | The last viewpoint I managed to visit just as the sun went down is Gowan Hill, behind the castle. Unfortunately, the sun had gone down already, making it hard to make out the monument, but the views to the hills of the Trossachs in the purple light of dusk were pretty epic too!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

#9: Riverside & Cambuskenneth Abbey

I was lucky enough to be taken on a wee private tour of Stirling’s hidden gems by Camila from Adventitious Violet and her partner. They suggested to check out Cambuskenneth Abbey on the other side of the river Forth, not only for potential views of the monument, but also because it’s a little known place to visit in Stirling.

We walked through the calm Riverside neighbourhood and reached the abbey just as the sun reached the golden hour. A photographer’s paradise! The abbey is an old Augustinian monastery which dates back to the 12th century. It was abandoned during the Scottish Reformation and today only the tall campanile towers over the the surrounding fields.

During the summer the abbey is open to visitors and on occasion the stairs to the top are open too!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

#10: Stirling Old Bridge

You might have heard about the Old Stirling Bridge before – in history class maybe, but more likely because you watched Braveheart . In the Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297) the Scottish Highlanders led by Andrew Moray and William Wallace defeated the English forces in a devastating blood bath.

Today’s bridge is believed to be slightly further downstream than the medieval bridge that marked the battle, but it is still an incredible sight to visit. It is only open to pedestrians and – of course – it also offers great views across to the Wallace Monument and back to Stirling Castle.

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

#11: Walking on Castle Hill

There are a couple of paths criss-crossing the Castle Hill on which Stirling Castle rests. We started walking from Old Stirling Bridge up Gowan Hill for sunset views, but continued to make our way around the trails until we emerged from the rest again by the Holy Rude cemetery.

Walking here is a welcome break from the city traffic, and even though you can still hear the roads up here, it feel like all of a sudden you are miles away, surrounded by nature!

Most people have heard about Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument - but there is more to see! Here are 10 things to do in Stirling beyond the castle!

#12: A wee pub crawl

The best day trips in Scotland end with a dram – and so Camila, her partner and I ended our tour at the Settle Inn , Stirling’s oldest pub. There is a cozy fireplace to keep you warm and welcoming locals behind and in front of the bar.

If you wanted to make a pub crawl out of it, also check out the Curly Coo Bar , Stirling’s only whisky bar, and the Aussie pub Kilted Kangaroo  – they are definitely among the best pubs in Stirling!

#13: Wallace Monument

No visit to Stirling would be complete without the Wallace Monument. Whether you catch a glimpse from one of the viewpoints or make your way to visit the monument up close, it will no doubt feature in your Stirling day trip. The Wallace Monument was built in the 19th century when there was a resurgence of Scottish national identity. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, the Scottish hero of the 13-14th century Scottish War for Independence.Visitors can climb over 240 steps to the observation platforms and visit the exhibition’s about the monument, Wallace and related history inside the tower.

Born in Stirling love the place. i know i am lucky to wake up every day, as kids we played in the castle ,dungeons, and the jails nearly every day before you had to pay. If you live in the burgh it is still free. within a mile you are in the countryside great place to live. For holidays great base to stay loads to do in the surrounding area’s.

Couldn’t agree more 🙂 Thanks for reading and your comment!

Try the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. Home to the world’s oldest football and a great story of where it was found!

I’m planning for a trip soon to Stirling and this’ll be of great help. Thank you!

Hi Kathi, I spent two weeks in Stirling in the 80ies, and it was great. No I’m planning a trip back, and I’m searching for a pub located outside the city, in the hills/mountains. A wonderful scenic place encaved in the hills. Any idea where that would be ? Trying to revive souvenirs ? Thanks for your input…. Philippe

Hi Philippe, by far my favourite pub that meets this description is the Clachaig Inn by Glencoe! I hope you find it!

Could be Sherriffmuir pub!!

The Brewdog in Stirling does a lovely vegan pizza and when we were there, they had a fun quiz night! We made friends with a gorgeous greyhound there too ?

Good to know for my next trip – I didn’t even know there was a Brewdog pub in Stirling!! Love a good vegan pizza 😀

Thank you for your blog Kathi. This is my hometown. I now live in Australia but go back every year – I am now so homesick after reading your blog and seeing your photos! Thank you for a very insightful and different view of showing Scotland to the world. Are you sure you don’t work for Tourisim Scotland? If not they should be giving you a job pretty damn quick!

Haha I wish you were making these decisions! To be honest, I don’t even know why Scotland needs a tourism board – all they need to do is upload photos of the country and people will come 😀 Thanks for your comment! I’m glad I can bring a little bit of Scotland all the way to Australia!!

Don’t forget the Smith Art Gallery and Museum Dumbarton road, tell the history of Stirling

A brilliant addition! Need to check it out next time!!

I spent the fall semester at University of Stirling, fun to watch your video and see all the cool spots around town again! Love your photos as well! Check out my wee blog, if you’re interested.

Your photos are lovely too – there’s something so beautiful about film photography, no digital camera can reproduce that feeling of waiting for the photos to be developed 🙂 Thanks for your comment!!

Nice article. My tip is hardly tourist stuff but I think people should know that Stirling regularly plays host to actual nuclear weapons. The military base on Forthside is used as a rest stop by convoys carrying nuclear warheads from Aldermaston/Burghfield to Coulport on Loch Long. These huge tracks can carry two warheads each and the bombs contain both high explosive and plutonium. Check out http://www.nukewatch.org.uk/?p=683 and Nukewatch on Facebook. Time for us all to wake up

This is the first time I am hearing about Stirling and I’ve definitely been missing a lot, Kathi! When’s the best time of the year to explore this magnificent place?

It’s a brilliant place for a day trip or a weekend away! Any time of the year is pretty in Scotland and weather is unpredictable year-round, but I honestly, think that this particular area is even more beautiful during the fall! The colours are at its best then 🙂

Love the angles in that photo of the bridge! ??

Buc-ee's coming to West Tennessee: How close will it be from Memphis and what to know about the plans

travel news near stirling

It's official − Buc-ee's is coming to West Tennessee.

It was revealed Wednesday that the large travel center chain plans to expand across the Volunteer State to Fayette County. In a post on Facebook, State Senator Page Walley, R-Savannah, announced plans for a new location saying, "BUC-EE’S-WELCOME TO FAYETTE COUNTY!!!" This will be the first Buc-ee's location in West Tennessee .

Though little is known about the specifics of the store, people are still excited about the store's opening if comments on Senator Walley's post are anything to go by.

Here is what we know about the store's opening.

Where is Buc-ee's coming to West Tennessee?

According to Senator Walley's Facebook post , the newest location for Buc-ee's would be at exit 28 on Interstate 40 in Gallaway, Tennessee. It will be on the side of Interstate 40 on the way to Jackson, Tennessee.

How far will the new Buc-ee's be from Memphis?

The new location for Buc-ee's is about 35 to 40 minutes from Downtown Memphis. Memphis residents further east in the suburbs will have a shorter drive. The location is only about 15 minutes west of Ford's new BlueOval City .

However, no one needs to worry about rushing to Buc-ee's before it closes as all locations are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

BlueOval City: Former military recruiter now leads Ford's quest to hire veterans at BlueOval City in TN

Where is Fayette County?

Fayette County is right next door to Shelby County. It is directly to the east of Shelby County and includes cities like Piperton, Somerville, Oakland and Gallaway. The new Buc-ee's location would be going in the northwestern part of the county.

When is the new Buc-ee's opening in West Tennessee?

No date for the opening has been announced.

Buc-ee's is massive

Buc-ee's travel center will be 74,000 square feet. The location will have 120 fueling positions and 71 restrooms for guests to use. Despite its large size, there are no semi-trucks allowed at the fueling center. It is just for cars and travelers.

What to know about Buc-ee's

If you've never been to Buc-ee's, you may be wondering why you keep seeing posts about some gas station from friends on social media. Well in short, the fuss is about all that Buc-ee's has to offer. It's not just a gas station − there is so much more .

People from all over travel to get a taste of Buc-ee's famous sliced brisket sandwich, beef jerky and beaver nuggets. While these may sound like meals, there are also numerous snack options at the travel center as well. After having Buc-ee's key lime pie in a cup, cinnamon almonds or tiger butter fudge, your sweet tooth may end up asking for a break.

How many Buc-ee's are in Tennessee?

There are only two operating locations in Tennessee. One is located in Sevierville and the other in Crossville. The Fayette County location will be the third operating site in Tennessee.

In total, there are 46 stores as of 2023 with 28 travel centers in seven states.

JetBlue, Southwest planes nearly collide – experts warn of air traffic control fatigue

travel news near stirling

Two planes were cleared on a collision path at Washington Reagan National Airport on Thursday. Thankfully, air traffic controllers got both aircraft to stop before disaster struck.

JetBlue flight 1554 from Washington to Boston was cleared for takeoff, while Southwest flight 2937 to Orlando was cleared to cross the same runway.

The JetBlue plane had already begun its takeoff roll as the Southwest jet approached its path.

Air traffic controllers can be heard in a recording of the incident warning both planes to stop.

“JetBlue 1554, stop,” one controller said. “Southwest stop! Southwest 2937, stop!” another said.

In statements to USA TODAY, both airlines acknowledged the incident and said they would cooperate with any follow-up investigations.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate.

Issues in air traffic control

It’s just the latest in a string of close calls that experts say highlight the narrow margin of safety with an overworked pool of air traffic controllers.

A panel previously established by the FAA released a report Friday warning that air traffic controllers were at high risk of fatigue and encouraging the agency to update its scheduling policies to address the issue.

Under new rules that FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said will go into effect in 90 days, the agency will increase the rest period for air traffic controllers to 10 hours between shifts, up from nine, and will require a minimum 12-hour rest period before midnight shifts.

Whitaker said in a briefing about the report with journalists on Friday that the agency is also aware of understaffing throughout the system. Both problems contribute to concerns at the agency but are being handled separately.

“We’re understaffed throughout the population of controllers,” he said. “We have been doing everything within our power to increase controller hiring.”
