10 Things to Do at Barcelona’s Port Vell Harbour

A short walk from the city centre, Barcelona’s Port Vell harbour is one of the most beautiful areas of the city. Popular with visitors and locals alike, and with plenty of things to see and do, it’s a great place to relax with friends and family.

Here’s our list of the ten best things to do at the Port Vell.

People rowing in Barcelona's Port Vell Harbour

1. Enjoy the Panoramic Views

Surrounded by the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and with a pedestrianised waterfront dotted with palm trees and public art, the Port Vell is one of the most picturesque parts of Barcelona.

The view from the harbour wall is pretty magnificent but to get a truly panoramic view you should check out the following locations.

The Barcelona Port Cable Car

Built in 1929, The Port Cable Car connects the Barceloneta beach to Montjuïc and crosses the port diagonally at a height of between 70 and 90 metres.

The journey lasts approximately eight minutes and the tiny red and white cabins can accommodate up to twenty passengers.

The Columbus Monument

A lift in the base of the Columbus Monument takes visitors up to a glassed-in viewing platform just below Columbus’ feet. In addition to views of the harbour, the 60m high column also affords good views of the Gothic Quarter and La Rambla.

More information in this post >>

Museum of the History of Catalonia

The museum’s fourth-story terrace and restaurant are a good vantage point with views across the port.

2. Take a Boat Tour

Another fun way to see Barcelona is from the sea and there’s no shortage of boat trips to choose from.

The longest established boat tours in Barcelona are Las Golondrinas which have been operating since 1888. The company runs small, traditional styled boats which do a forty-minute tour of the harbour. They also have modern glass-bottom boats that leave the port and cruise along the coast as far as El Forum and back.

There are numerous other boat tours available ranging from electrically powered Eco Tours to catamaran cruises, sunset sailing cruises and Party Boats.

3. Check out the Public Art

There are so many statues and monuments at the harbour that the area is sometimes compared to an open-air art gallery.

The oldest and best-known monument is the statue of Columbus which was inaugurated during the nineteenth century.

Other more contemporary statues were added as part of the regeneration project which transformed the harbour from rundown industrial quarter to the attractive leisure area that it is today.

Statues at Barcelona’s Port Vell Harbour

  • Columbus Monument
  • Stargazers (Miraestels)
  • Monument to US Servicemen
  • Monument to Romul Bosch i Alsina
  • Monument to Joan Salvat Papaseit
  • Monument to Sportspeople of the Sea
  • Barcelona’s Face
  • Evocació Marinera

4. Shop ’till You Drop

Located in the centre of the harbour, the ultra-modern Maremagnum shopping centre houses a wide range of stores from major high-street brands as well as restaurants, bars, coffee shops and a cinema.

Unlike other shopping centres in Barcelona, which don’t open on Sundays, the fact that the Maremagnum is located in the port means that it can open 365 days a year.

If you are looking for an FC Barcelona shirt or last-minute souvenir on a Sunday, this is the place to come.

5. Visit a Museum

There are two excellent museums at the Port Vell Harbour:

Barcelona Maritime Museum

Housed in Barcelona’s medieval shipyards, the Maritime Museum contains a collection of more than a hundred model ships of all shapes and sizes plus a full-sized replica of a sixteenth-century galley used at the battle of Lepanto.

The museum’s extensive collection also includes charts, navigational aids, figureheads and shipbuilding tools. There are even a couple of tall ships which belong to the museum moored in the harbour itself.

As its name suggests, the museum traces the history of Catalonia from the Palaeolithic period to the present day. Housed in an old nineteenth-century warehouse, you can get great views of the harbour from the museum’s roof terrace restaurant which sometimes stages concerts in the evenings.

The museum can be visited free of charge on the first Sunday of each month.

6. Catch the Cable Car up to Montjuïc

Planning to visit Montjuïc Castle? The most scenic and fun way to get there is by cable car.

Take the Port Cable Car from the beach, across the harbour to half way up the mountain. Then catch a second cable car up to the top.

7. Gawp at the Yachts

Hardly surprisingly, the port is a paradise for boat lovers with all type of watercraft ranging from historic tall ships to fishing boats, dinghies to super yachts and everything in between.

The innermost part of the harbour has hundreds of berths for sailing boats.

Barceloneta wharf caters for the luxury motor yachts of the super-rich. It’s not uncommon to see giant motor yachts with helicopters on deck and built-in garages for jet skis and speedboats.

Smaller cruise ships and the occasional Navy vessel dock at the Moll de Barcelona wharf, next to the World Trade Centre. Larger cruise liners and ferries to the Balearic Islands dock in the newer outer section of the harbour.

8. Visit the Aquarium

One of the city’s many family-oriented attractions , Barcelona Aquarium houses twenty large tanks, most of which recreate different Mediterranean habitats.

The aquarium’s star attraction is the Oceanarium; a huge five metre deep tank with an eighty metre long glass tunnel that lets you get close up and personal with sharks and manta rays.

There’s also a children’s area with touch pools and a submarine.

The aquarium is open seven days a week from 10:00 to 19:30

9. Buy Some Antiques

One of the best-known antiques and collectables markets in Barcelona takes place every weekend next to the Columbus Monument.

The Fira de Brocanters is open from Friday to Sunday from 11:00 to 21:00. The market’s small stalls are set up in the open and sell a mixture of antique and vintage items including coins, medals, posters, postcards, ornaments and bric-a-brac.

10. Marvel at the Architecture

The harbour is located in the Gothic Quarter and is surrounded by emblematic buildings from the thirteenth century to the present day.

The earliest building is the Royal Shipyards which is the oldest remaining shipyard of its kind in Europe.

When the harbour was refurbished, several interesting modern buildings were added including the World Trade Center and the Rambla Del Mar walkway.

Architecture at Barcelona’s Port Vell

  • The Royal Shipyards (13th century)
  • La Llotja del Mar (14th century)
  • El Palau de Mar (1880)
  • The Port Customs Building (19th century)
  • Casa Xifré (1840)
  • Barcelona Port Authority Building (1903)
  • Barcelona Central Post Office (1927)

The old port of Barcelona

barcelona boat trips port vell

By Jeroen van Egmond

Tuesday 5 March 2024

Close to the well-known Rambla street, and the statue of Columbus, you can also find the oldest part of Barcelona's harbour, Port Vell. This harbour has been renovated ahead of the 1992 Summer Olympics, and nowadays is one of the important tourist attractions of the city. From museums to stores, you'll be able to find a lot here, we made a list of all the top activities:

Must visits

1. maremagnum mall.

When visiting Port Vell, this might be one of the first things you will notice. Located right over the bridge, you'll find this iconic mall that's the perfect place to go shopping. Not only because of the perfect location but also because it's the only mall in the city that's allowed to be open 365 days a year! While many stores are closed on Sundays most of the year, in this mall you'll find many stores that are always open. A perfect place for some Sunday shopping!

2. The Aquarium

At Port Vell, you'll also be able to find the biggest Mediterranean-themed aquarium in the world. With around 66 Mediterranean and tropical aquariums and more than 450 different types of creatures, you'll be able to find a lot of unique things here. Mainly their aquarium, the 'Oceanium' is one of the highlights. Here you can find various types of sharks, rays, morays, and other species.

On Tuesday and Friday between 12:00 and 13:00, you'll also be able to see how the divers feed the sharks with the help of rods. Aside from that they also have feeding times for other species, you can find more information about that on their website . All in all, this aquarium is for sure a visit when you're passing by Port Vell.

3. Columbus Monument

Right when leaving the Rambla Street in Barcelona, before arriving at Port Vell, this Monument will surely grab your attention. The monument was constructed in 1888 in honour of Columbus's first trip to the Americas and his return to Barcelona after that trip, where he reported his findings to the then King and Queen of Spain.

Inside the 60-meter-high monument, you can also find an elevator that takes you up to its viewing platform. From here, you have a unique panoramic-view of the city, perfect for taking some photos!

barcelona boat trips port vell

4. Golondrinas boats

Las Golondrinas has been offering unique tours in the port and past the coast of Barcelona since 1888. Leaving from Port Vell, you'll pass by many interesting places. They offer two different tours. One of them is the 45-minute tour which will show you more of the Port of Barcelona itself. You'll first pass by the Maremagnum Mall, and from there, you'll see unique things like an old lighthouse and the cruise port, and you'll get unique views from Mount Montjuïc. The other tour, which takes 60 minutes, will show you many of the same things, but will also take you out of the port, to show you the coast of Barcelona, and also a unique view of the Barcelona skyline.

  • Barcelona’s Passeig Marítim (Seafront promenade) and the Port Vell

Passeig Marítim Barcelone

Updated Jun 01 2023

One of the best pleasures that Barcelona has to offer is the possibility of enjoying the Port Vell (in English, the Old Port area ) and the Promenade , whether it’s to sunbathe on the beach and swim in the sea, to take part in an aquatic sport, to drink in one of the ‘chiringuitos’ (the little bars on the beach), to eat in a good restaurant or simply to take a quiet walk along the seafront .

So that you make the most of your visit to Barcelona’s promenade, we’ve prepared a detailed section for you, which we hope will be very useful.

Barcelona Port Vell: the old port area of the city

Port Vell (The old port)

The Barcelona Port Vell, is the oldest port in the city , as its name suggests. Its current appearance is thanks to the major facelift the seafront was given in advance of the 1992 Olympic Games.

It’s therefore one of the most visited areas of Barcelona, by tourists and locals alike. In spite of all this development, the main charm of the area still lies in the sea , the little boats and the seagulls that are very much at home there.

Currently the Marina in the Old Port, where the pier can be found (el Moll de La Barceloneta) is going through a major transformation , and as is often the case in these situations, there’s been a fair amount of controversy because a large part of the works is focussed around bringing in more tourism at a luxury level, something that the local residents of the simple La Barceloneta district have criticized.

Without doubt, the two most charming areas of the Old Port are the Moll de Bosch i Alsina , which is better known as the Moll de la Fusta (in English ‘wooden wharf), which used to serve the purpose of the stowage and transport of wood, and the Rambla de Mar , the floating walkway that provides a direct link to the Maremagnum commercial centre, where you’ll find the cinema, the aquarium, shops and restaurants. It’s a great place in which to sit and admire the beautiful views of the Old Port, and perhaps take a few photos.

Travel cards Barcelona

We think that the most interesting part of the seafront is the part that runs from the Old Port (El Port Vell) up to the start of the Rambla del Poblenou . You can walk in whichever direction you choose, but you should really dedicate half a day (morning or afternoon) if possible, as this will give you the chance to enjoy the charms of the area without having to hurry.

The walk, which we recommend you either start or finish with a good paella depending on the time of day you’re there, wouldn’t be complete without sitting down for a drink in one of the ‘chiringuitos’ (the bars on the beach itself that are open between the end of March and the end of October).

Golondrina Port Vell

It’s not possible to see 100% of Barcelona’s coastline without going out on a boat trip around the Old Port and the promenade. As well as the historic boats known as the Golondrinas , more companies have started providing a similar service over the past few years. In addition to this, if you’re after something a little more luxurious there are other companies that arrange different types of excursions by yacht or sailing boat.

Passeig Marítim: Barcelona’s seafront promenade

The Passeig Marítim (the Promenade)

Divided into three different areas – Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta , Passeig Marítim del Bogatell and the Passeig Marítim de Mar Bella – you’ll find a huge amount of attractions along the promenade, from its beaches to monuments and buildings of interest, as well as bars, restaurants and of course the hidden charms of La Barceloneta.

An excellent way to discover Barcelona’s promenade is to do so by bike, which will allow you to have a bit of exercise whilst enjoying the views that the promenade and the Old Port offer, in a novel way.

If you’re not in the mood for pedalling, a good option for seeing the promenade without getting tired is to hire the service of a bicycle taxi, also known as pedicabs. Movilidadecocity is one of the companies that offer this service.

stone benches

In between the Nova Icària beach and that of Bogatell there’s a set of stone benches that, although they might not be the most comfortable in the world (we can vouch for this!), have their own charm and allow you to sit down, or even lie down for a bit, to rest and enjoy the sunshine.

Barcelona’s beaches

Barcelona’s beaches

Barcelona’s promenade is made up of a total of 10 different beaches , and despite the fact that many of them merge into each other, they do each have their own characteristics.

So it’s possible to find more family-friendly beaches, those in which you can take part in water sports, some that are popular with the gay community (such as Marbella Beach), and even a designated nudist beach.

During the summer months it’s practically impossible to find a quiet beach in Barcelona, but it’s certainly possible to avoid the busiest, which are usually those that are situated along Barceloneta’s promenade (Platja de Sant Sebastià, Platja de La Barceloneta, Platja de Sant Miquel and Platja del Somorrostro), as these are the nearest beaches to the city centre.

The beach season usually runs from June until September , although thanks to the good climate that Barcelona enjoys during the last weeks of spring and the first weeks of autumn, there’s often a summery feel to the beaches at these times, with thousands of people making the most of the sun’s rays.

Bars, restaurants and “chiringuitos” by the sea

chiringuito Barcelona beach

Along the Old Port and the promenade you’ll find all sorts of restaurants and bars. Although the food is very good in most of them, there are also some in which the quality isn’t so good, and these are generally the ones that offer the typical tourist menu. Please, whatever you do, avoid the pre-prepared ‘Paellador’ paellas and the paella + tapa + sangría offers – you will get much better food in the more authentic places.

Barcelona’s chiringuitos are small bars, usually taking the form of temporary kiosks as some are only open in high season, and they can be found on the beach itself, near to where the sand meets the promenade.

As well as the compulsory paella, we recommend that you try a ‘tapa’ that originates in La Barceloneta, ‘ La Bomba ’, that consists of a kind of potato pastry, filled with meat, which is freshly fried and accompanied by a spicy sauce.

paella Barcelona

Without a doubt, the best place to go for a good paella in Barcelona is the district of La Barceloneta . It has a great fishing tradition and you’ll find that many of the restaurants have been there for generations, although these have been joined by some newer outfits, all of which offering food of the best quality.

Many of these restaurants don’t have an outside seating area, as they are often found in the narrow side streets of La Barceloneta. However, we’re mindful of the fact that many of you will want to sit outside, and near to the seafront if possible, during your precious few days of sunshine in Barcelona, so we have given you a list of some of our recommended restaurants, some of which have terraces and are situated right on the waterfront.

Barcelona’s promenade is the place to be at night-time too, as you’ll find many bars and clubs there, especially next to the Platja del Somorrostro (the most fashionable bars, where techno, house and disco music is most popular), and in the Port Olímpic (without as much atmosphere, home to smaller bars and clubs that play more Latin music and have themed evenings). Eclipse Bar is also well known as a more exclusive bar, located up on the 26th floor of the W Hotel Barcelona, at the other end of the promenade.

Individual opening times and days of the week on which the bars and clubs are open vary greatly. Some are only open on certain days (normally Thursday to Saturday or Sunday), whereas others choose to open every day of the week.

As a rule the clubs close around 3am during the week and 5:30am at weekends.

Shops near the Barcelona seafront promenade

Maremagnum

Barcelona’s promenade hardly has any shops . The few that there are can be found in between the Golden Fish monument by Frank Gehry and the Torre Mapfre and the Hotel Arts. As far as the Port Vell (Old Port) is concerned, all the shops are contained within the Maremagnum commercial centre, which also houses bars, restaurants and a cinema.

Events held on the Barcelona’s seafront

Feria de Abril

All of the places that make up the promenade are the perfect stages for celebrating the city’s fiestas, and for organising all sorts of events. The main places in which these events take place tend to be the area outside the Fòrum (concerts and fairs), the Maremagnum commercial centre (gastronomic events and markets), and the grassy area of the Port Vell (circuses).

Hotels in the Old Port and along the Promenade

Staying along the seafront is the preferred option for many people who are spending a few days in Barcelona, especially for those who are there during the summer months. In spite of the many hotels to choose from, the huge demand means that it’s rarely cheap to stay in one of these hotels. However, there are always special offers available if you reserve far enough in advance.

When Barcelona opened up to the sea

Although now it might be difficult to imagine, Barcelona’s Promenade (in Catalan Passeig Marítim de Barcelona and in Spanish Paseo Marítimo ), which is now loved by tourists and locals alike, is actually relatively new .

Barcelona is of course a city that has always lived practically next to the sea, but it wasn’t until the city was chosen for the Olympic Games of 1992 that the major works were carried out that really opened Barcelona to the sea , later creating this magnificent promenade in time for the Cultural Forum of 2004 , when it was extended to reach its current length of 5km.

Guide of Port Vell Marina Area of Barcelona

Once a thriving trading port, today redeveloped tourist hot spot with boat tours, museums, sailing ships, old buildings & shopping complex, about barcelona port vell area.

Barcelona's Port Vell , is a great place to spend half to a full day when in Barcelona and offers a little of everything with museums, shopping, sailing trips, walking and good food if you know where to go.

Barcelona port can be found at the bottom of Las Ramblas starting from the Columbus monument and reaching to Barceloneta to form a modern marina called Port Vell that was extensively redeveloped for the 1992 Olympics. The port today contains and island shopping centre, called Maremagnum . Maritime tourist attractions such as sailing ships and coastal boat tours can be found here.

The maritime port of Barcelona dates from the 4AD. The port was active as a crucial frontier trading post throughout the Middle Ages because of its location on the border between Muslim southern Spain and North Africa and the Christian world of Europe. However, the region suffered powerful storms which damaged the ships while docked in the port. From this period the Drassanes Reial Shipyard (royal shipyard), which was used to build and repair sailing galleys, survives and today houses the Barcelona Maritime museum . Originally the Drassanes Reial Shipyard building was on the sea front with a long ramp leading out into the sea to launch the boats, but everything in front of this building is today modern land reclamation to build the modern port.

On the landward side of the Marina between Drassanes and Barceloneta is Moll de Fusta . Moored alongside Moll de Fusta is the sailboat Santa Eulalia which is a living exhibit of the Maritime museum and is included in the MMB (Museo Maritim de Barcelona) entry ticket. Also here is the Port Authority - Admiral Historic Authority building, built 1902, to handle port taxes. Today this building is being refurbished.

Attempts were made throughout the centuries to create an artificial sheltered harbour which could shield boats from the storms. In the 15th century Barcelona began to build breakwaters on the spit of land today known as Barceloneta and today the port is enclosed on three sides. From the 18th to 20th century Barcelona port was very industrial with many brick dock warehouses, modelled on the Warehouses of East London. Only one survives today, The Palau del Mar , and is now the History of Catalunya museum .

In the middle of Port Vell and Maremagnum . Construction of this island shopping centre started in the 1980s and was finished for the 1992 Olympic games . The whole port area underwent a huge urban renewal to transform it from a derelict industrial port with railway lines into a public space with boulevards. Interesting fact is that Maremagnum is the one of only a few shopping complexes in Barcelona that is permitted to open on Sunday's due to it being exempt from the normal trading laws because of its location "in the sea"!

Linking Maremagnum and the "Island in Port Vell" to Las ramblas is a white steel and wooden decked swing bridge that was built as an extension of Las Ramblas called Rambla Del Mar . Pedestrian traffic is stopped over this bridge sometimes to allow the sailing vessels to pass out of Port Vell. It is around here that you will find the Sailing cruises and Las Golondrinas boat tours.

Between the Columbus monument and Barceloneta neighbourhood Are several buildings of historical interest such as the Post office and telegraph building which still has the old radio telegraphy antennas on the roof. It is an active post office that can be visited and still retains the splendid customer hall. Also on the landward side of port Vell is Our Lady Of Mercy Baroque style basilica which is an incredibly ornately decorated church that can be visited. Inside the Christopher Columbus monument is a lift which can be taken to a small viewing gallery at the top that provides spectacular views on a clear day of the port and Cuitat vella areas of Barcelona.

The Barcelona aquarium , next to the Maremagum shopping centre, is a child friendly museum that is full of tanks with many Mediterranean fish species and habitats. Between Maremagnum and the Aquarium you will find some outdoor bars and crepes stalls. These are tourist traps and I do not recommend eating there.

The Port has many old historic buildings such as the clock tower Torre del Relotge from the 18th century and Capitania General d'Espanya former military barracks. These buildings are not open as tourist attractions but can be viewed from outside.

Once you have finished exploring the Port Vell area, I recommend visiting El Bosc de les Fades for tapas and drinks. This is a theme bar decorated like an enchanted fairy tale forest and is child friendly having indoor fountains and caves to explore. The bar is Part of the Barcelona Wax museum .

Port Vell is both a port and a city. It is a public space as well as a driving force for economic, social and cultural activity. Its mission is to generate prosperity for the community, consolidating itself as a friendly, sustainable and cohesive area, fully integrated into the city.

Port Vell is the result of the transformation of the oldest area of the Port of Barcelona, the closest to the city and where the port was no longer in operation. Without losing its maritime identity, it has gradually incorporated public spaces and others for commercial, leisure, sporting and cultural uses.

Port Vell is yours

Port Vell is the citizens’ area of the Port of Barcelona, one of the most dynamic, attractive and unique areas of the city. Through a balanced management of public spaces, Port Vell has become an international benchmark of port-city integration and has achieved a productive and sustainable coexistence between urban and citizen use and commercial, industrial and fishing activities present in the region. The citizen port is managed by; Port Vell Gerencia set up by the Port of Barcelona in 1988.

Discover the charm of the Old Port and its many leisure activities

Port Vell

Do you want sea? Wonderful, because Barcelona has so much to offer for all lovers of maritime: the miles of beach promenade, the Olympic port with its pleasure boats, the view from Montjuic on container terminals and cruise ships ... Another highlight begins in the old town by the Columbus statue and extends to the Barceloneta district: Port Vell, the Old Port.

The history of the port dates back to the 4th century BC, when the Laietani, who settled in the area at that time, began to trade by sea. The first port facility, which could provide ships with protection against storms and waves, was, however, only successfully built in the 15th century. In the course of the urban renewal for the 1992 Olympic Games, the area of the Old Port was finally completely renovated. Instead of old factories and fallow land, it now houses modern piers and berths, beautiful promenades and numerous tourist attractions.

The entrance gate, coming from the monument of Columbus, form the impressive buildings of the port administration and the customs authority - the latter is currently being extensively restored. Just in between are the moorings for the "Golondrinas", the boats that depart several times a day for entertaining harbor cruises - including a spectacular view from the water to the skyline of the city. But it's also worth exploring Port Vell on foot. As an extension of the Rambla leads next to the "Golondrinas" a jetty over the water - the Rambla del Mar. It has a wooden floor, which is mounted in a slightly curved shape and is thus reminiscent of the waves of the Mediterranean. If you're lucky, the Rambla del Mar is even on the move: if necessary, it is pushed apart in the middle so that sailboats with tall masts can drive through. Always a fascinating spectacle!

At the end of the Rambla del Mar, on a sort of peninsula, is the Maremagnum - a striking glass shopping center open seven days a week, with several restaurants and bars. Other popular leisure attractions next door are the IMAX Cinema and Aquarium, Europe's largest and most important marine science museum of the Mediterranean. For a thrill, the walk through an 80-meter underwater tunnel, while sharks swim around one ...

Those who continue on the peninsula can admire numerous sailboats and luxury yachts on both sides, which have their moorings here. Just before you reach the main street, Passeig de Colom, on your right, rises the beautifully landscaped Palau del Mar, home to the Museum of Catalan History - the building almost forms the border between Port Vell and the Barceloneta district.

Returning to the Columbus statue, you can reach the Moll de la Fusta pier - unmistakable are the colorful sculptures of pop art artist Roy Lichtenstein and the gold-glittering gamba by artist Javier Mariscal, both popular photo opportunities. Worthwhile here is another detour to the water, more precisely to the historic sailing ship Santa Eulàlia. It is a schooner from 1918, lovingly restored by the Barcelona Maritime Museum and declared a Cultural Interest of National Interest in 2011.

At the end should it be high again? Then head to the Columbus statue and enjoy a spectacular 360 degree view - the city is here at your feet!
