STUDY TOURS TO POLAND

Study Tours to Poland (STP) are study visits to Poland for students and professionals from Eastern Europe. The objective of such tours is to learn about Poland and share experiences on democratic and free market transformations, establish a state governed by the rule of law, enhance local communities and citizens’ initiatives.

The “Study Tours to Poland” Program is run by the Polish-American Freedom Foundation. It was founded in 2004 as part of the “Region in Transition” Program (RiTA), implemented since 2000 by the Education for Democracy Foundation. In 2007-2016, the Jan Nowak-Jeziorański College of Eastern Europe in Wrocław was the STP Coordinator.

WE ALREADY HOSTED ALMOST 7,000 PROFESSIONALS AND OVER  3,500 STUDENTS FROM EASTERN EUROPE

STUDY TOURS TO POLAND – VISITS FOR PROFESSIONALS

As part of the short-term study visits, representatives of local governments and administration authorities as well as employees of central state institutions and other professional groups may learn about Polish achievements in the field of political changes and experiences of the “Polish path” to EU membership. The tours are organized in small groups, in collaboration with Polish NGOs, government authority units, local government authority units, and central state institutions. To date, mainly representatives of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Moldavia and Georgia participated in the STP.

STUDY TOURS TO POLAND – STUDENTS’ VISITS

As part of the STP path, we would like to invite all outstanding students from Belarus, Moldavia, Ukraine and the Russian Federation (from Kaliningrad Oblast, Novgorod Oblast, Leningrad Oblast and Saint Petersburg) for study visits lasting several days, which are held in Polish academic centers. During the meetings organized by experienced NGOs, the students are given an opportunity to meet Polish academic circles, citizens’ organizations and leaders of public life as well as take part in lectures, workshops, seminars and cultural events. The STP for students are coordinated by the “Borussia” Foundation in Olsztyn.

Student Trips to Poland

Poland is a country that’s combines history with a wealth of stunning scenery; from picturesque cities and scenic woods, to huge lakes and constantly-flowing rivers, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful country.

For history students, there’s nowhere that will allow them to fully grasp the horrors of the Holocaust, than at Auschwitz. This former concentration camp has been preserved and is now home to a museum that sensitively commemorates the Jewish prisoners and those that were murdered during Hitler’s reign of terror.

An additional visit to the resurgent city of Warsaw, further illustrates Poland’s harrowing past. This city was nearly destroyed at the end of world war two, but is now home to an array of excellent museums and a lively dining scene.

Setting aside Poland’s turbulent history, it's now one of the fastest-growing economies of the 21 st century, fully demonstrating this country’s incredible resilience.  In the city of Krakow, there’s a stunning mix of architecture that showcases Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles, for an inspiring journey through the ages.

Medieval castles can be found up and down the country, and thanks to the country’s unspoiled countryside, visitors can enjoy the fresh air and areas of refreshing, untouched natural beauty.

Personal experience: a trip to Poland

Nina Halina, a member of Study Tours to Poland (STP) in 2015, told how to go to an international program, how Polish students celebrate student's day and why employers are so interested in internships abroad.

Study Tours to Poland is a program designed for active students aged 18 to 21 years. The participants of the program will spend 12 days at one of the Polish universities, taking an active part in various student and city events. Program is implemented annually, every autumn and spring, and applications for participation are accepted in summer and winter.

Where are you studying now?

Now I am studying in the magistracy of the Kharkov National University of Municipal Economy named after A.N. Beketov for a manager.

Why did you choose this particular program?

Before, I never thought about the fact that there are free programs abroad, in which you can take part. But I have a friend, and she is a very active person, she was the one who told me about her trip to Poland and motivated me to apply for this free program. At first I missed a year, but then I thought: "why am I losing such a good opportunity?"- and still decided to submit the documents.

What was the application process?

A friend told me everything that needs to be done and what documents are needed to participate in the Study Tours to Poland program. The application turned out to be very simple, no special efforts were needed: not even certificates of knowledge of the English language were required. You just had to fill out an application and write a letter of motivation explaining why you want to take part in the program. I wrote the motivation letter on my own, no one helped me, since I myself am a rather versatile and active person. In a motivation letter, I wrote that I want to develop and improve my communication skills with people from different countries and cultures, topicsmoreover, the program involved the participation of representatives from different countries: Ukraine, Russia, Moldova and Belarus.

Describe your typical day on Study Tours to Poland

Regarding the schedule, it should be noted that all activities were clearly scheduled, and the schedule itself, which we received from the project coordinator in advance was very tight. The Study Tours to Poland program meant that we would live in one city, but our project coordinator tried to make our program as interesting as possible: we lived not in one city, but in three cities - it was a small town Supra, l, then Bialystok, in whichwe spent most of the program, and we spent one day in Warsaw.

As for the daily routine, we usually got up at 7:00-7:30 am, after breakfast, went to pre-scheduled meetings. For example, there was a meeting with representatives of local government, together with volunteer philologists, we visited various events and organizations. We have been on radio, television and university. And also, of course, there was a cultural program, during which we attended various holidays held in the city.

What events on Study Tours to Poland were the most memorable?

In fact, I would mark everything, since we were there for 12 days and every day was something interesting. We were at private enterprises, for example, at an enterprise for the production of agricultural machinery, where we were told the history of the formation of this business and the specifics of modern agricultural production. Our group included economists, managers, ecologists and philologists. And everyone found something interesting for themselves in their own direction. For me, as a manager, everything was interesting, but I would especially note the meeting with politicians and the meeting in the business area. We visited a business club in Bialystok, where city entrepreneurs hold closed meetings, discuss joint projects and exchange contacts. This the club was founded not only to raise problems and talk about entrepreneurial activity, but also to find like-minded people and colleagues.

If we take the cultural direction, then most of all I was struck by the museum of icons in the city of Supral, as well as the day of the student and the day of youth. The holiday is called Juwenalia Day and the youth celebrate it for three days.

In general, this, of course, was an incredible trip: more than a year has passed, and the memories remained just as warm. STP is the program that will help young people to open up, find themselves, change their view of the world and make loyal friends.

Do you think this experience helps with employment?

When I got a job in Kiev at an English language school, they were very interested in my participation in this program and the program itself. I was asked a lot about what I was doing there, what I was doing. Basically, when I later went through interviews, everyone asked and asked about this experience. It seems to me that participation in such events testifies to the fact that a person has an active life position, that he can do something, that he has already seen something.

What are your plans for the near future?

Study Tours to Poland gave me the opportunity to participate in their program of creating our own projects, where we were trained to make our own social projects so that we could successfully implement them. I was selected successfully and received a grant. So, in the spring of 2016, she implemented her own project. The project was dedicated to safe cycling in the metropolis. With the lack of urban infrastructure, this often becomes a serious problem that needs to be addressed somehow. During the implementation of my project, experienced speakers at seminars taught both adults and young children to drive correctly and safely. So now, when I am already finishing my studies, I am thinking of two options:either stay in Kharkov and continue doing social projects, or go as a volunteer to EVS.

School Trips to Krakow

Educational trips to Poland provide students and teachers with valuable learning experiences that will transform your perspective on history, psychology and religious studies. Although World War destruction and years of communist rule caused substantial damage to Poland’s heritage., the ancient royal city of Krakow is still renowned for its cultural significance, and it is home to some of the most symbolic sites of 20th-century history.

What learning benefits do educational trips to Poland provide?

A school trip to Poland means a visit to the historical city of Krakow, one of the most significant places of the Second World War. Students will gain surreal insight into what life was like under Nazi occupation during this period.

The invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in September 1939 led to the start of the Second World War, with France and Britain declaring war on Germany following the invasion by the Nazis. History students will get the chance to visit one of the world’s most symbolic and eye-opening historical sites at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. They can also tour the Kazimierz Jewish District which formed the Krakow Ghetto, achieving notoriety as a place of starvation and disease.

For a deeply personal learning experience, your students can talk to a Survivor of the Holocaust. This could form the basis of a valuable case study for any student of psychology and sociology.

Explore more of Poland’s rich cultural history in Krakow

Preceding the 20th century, Poland has a storied history that spanned different eras of rule during the 18th century, when the city of Krakow was under Austrian control. The latter part of the 19th century saw Austrian control relaxed, with the country regaining its stature in 1918 at the end of the First World War.

During educational trips to Poland, you students will be fascinated and inspired when learning about these periods of history, and they’ll be able to marvel at the thousands of symbolic buildings comprising exceptional gothic architecture that have huge historical significance. Discover more about Krakow in our blog post here .

Krakow school trips highlights…

A school trip to Poland offers you a chance to explore Krakow’s wonderful selection of historical sites, areas of cultural significance, and truly breathtaking sights steeped in art and architectural brilliance. We’ve compiled a list of trip highlights that previous groups have loved. Check them out below.

Galicia Jewish Museum

Auschwitz-Birkenau

  • Wawel Royal Castle

Oskar Schindler Museum

Wieliczka Salt Mine

Located in the Jewish district of Kazimierz in Krakow, the Galicia Jewish Museum is a photo exhibition that documents the lives of Jewish people and shows Jewish culture and life in Polish Galicia. It’s an ideal excursion for educational trips to Poland with history students.

History students on a school trip to Poland can gain valuable insights into the history of Jewish culture, traditions, and life in the region. It provides a unique opportunity to understand the impact of World War II on Jewish communities in Poland.

Standing in the centre of the main market square in Krakow you’ll see the Cloth Hall. Perhaps the most recognisible feature of the city, this grand structure was once a major centre of international trade. You can still walk through and explore the stalls selling various goods even now.

Students can experience the historical significance of trade and commerce during medieval times. Exploring the stalls allows them to observe the market dynamics and its role in Krakow's history.

Your students will learn more about the Holocaust and hear personal stories of those who were brought here during the Nazi regime. You will be taken on a guided tour of Auschwitz and then nearby Birkenau, with detailed accounts allowing students to discover the horrifying ordeal of life at this infamous concentration camp.

This visit provides an emotional and educational understanding of the Holocaust, offering students a chance to learn about the atrocities of Nazi regime and the importance of promoting peace and tolerance

Wawel Royal Castle

Situated atop Wawel Hill with views overlooking the glistening River Vistula, the Wawel Royal Castle is considered one of the most historically and culturally important sites in Poland. It was once the residence of kings and symbolised Polish statehood for many centuries.

During educational trips to Poland, your students can now explore the site’s fantastic art museum, showcasing Italian Renaissance paintings and the largest collection of Ottoman tents in Europe. Students can also ascend the Sandomierska Tower and take a guided outdoor tour to learn and appreciate the grandiose architecture and gardens of the Wawel.

Students can delve into Poland's rich royal history, architecture, and culture. The art museum inside showcases Renaissance paintings, and the castle's gardens provide insights into grandiose architecture.

Discover the inspirational story of Oskar Schindler during the Second World War and learn about Schindler’s remarkable efforts that saved the lives of many Jewish labourers. Schindler’s Enamel Factory portrays life during wartime and the events that happened in the city at that time.

This museum is perfect for a history school trip to Krakow and educates students about the courageous acts of individuals during world war 2 and the moral choices made during difficult times.

Arguably one of the highlights of an educational trip to Poland is a visit to the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine. The mine was in operation from the 13th century until 2007, this cavernous mine reaches 327 metres below ground level. Students will love exploring the stunning carvings and vast underground lakes. There is so much educational value to extract from visiting one of UNESCO’s World Cultural and National Heritage Sites, regardless of the subject area of study!

On Krakow school trips students can learn about the historical significance of the salt mining industry in Poland and the remarkable engineering achievements involved. The mine's UNESCO World Heritage status also emphasises the importance of preserving cultural and historical landmarks.

Popular Krakow Itinerary

Top tips from our travel experts.

"Krakow is a beautiful city with very friendly residents who create a safe and hospitable atmosphere. Exploring the dark, emotional history of the area is a must for anyone who visits. A half-day visit to Auschwitz/Birkenau is our top essential suggestion as well as meeting with a holocaust survivor which is an amazing opportunity. However, this if not always possible, so instead we can sometimes offer a meeting with a sympathiser who assisted the Jews during the war to give their unique first-hand historical account. If visiting in the winter, be prepared it is very cold and you do spend a lot of time outdoors and even in the summer at the Salt Mines, which is a must see, you will need a coat as 15 degrees all year round down there. In the evening bowling and water parks are cheap evening activities and in winter going to an ice hockey game is a fun night out."

Cost of Living In Poland for International Students

Calling all brainy adventurers! Poland’s on your radar for studies, and that’s awesome!

It’s got great schools, a cool vibe, and bonus points, so it’s easy on the wallet. Before you jet off, let’s talk about living costs. We’ll cover everything from finding a roof over your head to yummy eats and getting around, so you can budget like a boss and focus on acing your studies. So, let’s get started!

Accommodation Costs

Finding a comfortable and affordable place to live is a big part of planning your study abroad experience in Poland. Here’s a breakdown of the two most common options for Indian students:

University Dorms

  • Budget-friendly : University dormitories offer the most cost-effective option, with monthly rents ranging from ₹9,000 to ₹13,300 .
  • Social atmosphere : Living in dorms is a great way to meet fellow students from Poland and worldwide, fostering a strong sense of community .
  • Shared facilities: Dorms typically have shared kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry facilities.

Shared Flats

  • More privacy: A shared flat offers more privacy and independence than dorms.
  • Varied costs: Renting a shared flat can vary depending on location, amenities, and the number of flatmates. Expect to pay between ₹1,800 to ₹6,800 per person , excluding bills usually shared.

Choosing Your Ideal Place

The best accommodation option depends on your individual preferences.

  • Prioritising budget?
  • Craving social interaction?
  • Yearning for more privacy?

Before signing any rental agreement, understand the terms and conditions, including bills and any additional fees.

By carefully considering your needs and budget, you can find the perfect accommodation to make your study abroad experience in Poland enjoyable and comfortable.

Travel and Transportation Expenses

Getting around Poland won’t break the bank! Here’s why:

Affordable Public Transport

Poland boasts a well-developed public transport network, making it easy and inexpensive to navigate cities.

Buses, trams, and metros are readily available and, most importantly, student-friendly:

  • Monthly Passes: Monthly passes are your best bet for regular travel. Prices range from ₹1,100 to ₹1,300, making commuting super affordable.
  • Student Discounts: As an Indian student, you’ll enjoy significant discounts on public transportation tickets . Be sure to carry your student ID to take advantage of these savings.
  • Semester Passes: For long-term stays, consider a semester pass. These typically cost around ₹4,500 and are valid for six months , offering even better value for money.

Taxis: An Occasional Splurge

Taxis are readily available in most Polish cities, offering a convenient alternative for occasional trips or late-night journeys. However, remember that taxis are generally more expensive than public transport.

Remember: By utilising public transport and taking advantage of student discounts, you can control your travel expenses in Poland.

Miscellaneous Expenses

We’ve talked about rent and getting around, but there’s more to student life!

In this section, we discuss staying connected with family back home, having some fun (because breaks are important!), and maybe even treating yourself sometimes.

Remember, these are just estimates. You can be a budgeting pro by cooking meals at home, checking out free stuff in Poland, or adjusting your “fun money” based on what you like to do.

Here’s a breakdown to help you plan for these extras:

By planning your budget effectively and adopting some money-saving habits, you can comfortably manage your living expenses in Poland while enjoying all the exciting things student life has to offer.

Students travel to study Holocaust

Five Bishop McCort Catholic High School Seniors traveled to Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria to study the Holocaust through the Blanche Beerman Fund of the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. In return for this educational opportunity, the five students — Emma Newcomer, Ashley Koontz, Lauren Crocco, Lauren Conrad and Charlize Amper — have prepared a presentation and testimonial, which echoes the message “Always remember, never forget!”

The public is invited to attend a presentation by the students at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 5, when they will be observing Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, with Temple Beth Israel. The Holocaust Study Tour students will lead a presentation comprised of slides, pictures and video clips outlining their journey through this historical event. They will take the audience on an educational recap of the events leading up to World War II and the Holocaust and continue by outlining their experiences through their travels.

Their mission is to spread the word of what they saw and experienced.

Chaperones and mentors for this project are Mary Clare Piatak, Bishop McCort French teacher, and Durinda Reaman, retired Bishop McCort English teacher.

Temple Beth Israel is at 3004 Union Ave., Altoona.
