Football in Japan

The national football competition of Japan is called the J League. The first division (J1 League) hosts clubs like Yokohama F. Marinos, FC Tokyo, Gamba Osaka, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Kawasaki Frontale and Vissel Kobe.

Football is the second most popular sport in the country, after baseball. The national team of Japan was successful in 1992 when they won their first and only Asian Championship. Their best international result was achieved in 2002 and in 2022, when the Japanese reached the round of 16, of the World Cup.

A Japanese player that has gained international fame is Keisuke Honda, who played for the Dutch club Vitesse, CSKA Moscow from Russia and AC Milan from Italy. Japanese football players are generally known for being very technical.

Ajinomoto Stadium

Ajinomoto Stadium

Club: FC Tokyo & Tokyo Verdy | Opening: 2001 | Capacity: 49,970 seats

History and description

Ajinomoto Stadium was built in 2000 on the site of a former US military base. It officially opened on 10 March 2001.

Despite conforming with FIFA requirements, Ajinomoto Stadium was not selected as a 2002 FIFA World Cup stadium.

Until 2003 the stadium was called Tokyo Stadium, but it changed names to Ajinomoto Stadium as a result of a sponsorship deal.

How to get to Ajinomoto Stadium

Ajinomoto Stadium is located in the Chofu area in the west of Tokyo, just under 25 kilometres from central Tokyo.

The stadium is best reached by train. It lies a 5-minute walk away from Tobitakyu station, which is on the Keiō line . The Keiō line can be taken from Shinjuku Station, which is on the Tokyo metro and can be easily reached from central Tokyo.

An alternative is Tama station, which is a 20-minute walk from the stadium, but on matchdays there are shuttle buses. Tama Station is on the short local Seibu Tamagawa Line, which can be transferred to from Musashi-Sakai Station. Musashi-Sakai Station is connected with central Tokyo through the Chūō Line .

Address: 376-3 Nishi-cho, Chofu City, Tokyo 182-0032

This is a large bowl type ground, The capacity is less than the impression of size the stadium gives. Seats are a distance from the pitch, athletic track style. Stadium is seen from Railway station and a 10 to 15 minute walk. Ticket booth, souvenirs and food and drink all available. Also plenty of American style vendors inside stadium. Railway is private line not covered by JRpass or subway so buy a ticket, need to check that train stops at stadium which it normally does on match days, otherwise short easy change. Japanese trains are very efficient so not an issue.

Tokyo 2020—The New National Stadium

The New National Stadium is the centerpiece of Tokyo's Olympic and Paralympic facilities. The distinctive wooden lattice framework and design blends ultra-modern and traditional Japanese architectural techniques, including 70,000 cubic feet of Ryukyu Pine and cedarwood, symbolically taken from all of Japan's 47 prefectures.

The 68,000-seat stadium, located a stone's throw from the outer gardens of Meiji-jingu Shrine and within sight of the skyscrapers of Shinjuku, will host the opening and closing ceremonies for both the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as track and field events and several soccer matches.

The 157-billion-yen (1.4 billion USD) stadium was a joint enterprise between renowned architect Kengo Kuma, Taisei Corporation and Azusa Sekkei.

  • Fluid lines of wood and steel
  • The beautiful structure inspired by a pagoda
  • Unobstructed views from every seat and sloped seating

How to Get There

The stadium is a one-minute walk from Kokuritsu-Kyogijo Station on the Toei-Oedo Subway line or five minutes on foot from Sendagaya Station on the overland Chuo-Sobu line, operated by East Japan Railway Co. Alternatively, it is a 15-minute walk from Gaienmae Station on the Ginza subway line.

A design for the 21st Century

The beautiful stadium was built with both practicality and style in mind: Japan's opportunity to showcase its advanced technology and eye for design. The wooden elements give the stadium a highly distinctive—and very Kengo Kuma—aesthetic. The three stories slope steeply so that even those in higher seats can feel the buzz of the games on the field.

tokyo tour football

Most importantly, Kuma has addressed concerns about the Tokyo summer heat by creating a structure that is designed to let in the wind. Layered eaves, like those seen in traditional Japanese pagodas, have been implemented to "catch" the wind and redirect it throughout the stadium to control the heat and humidity for spectators and athletes alike. Tiered levels have vegetation on various concourses and the design has been broadly welcomed for its clever use of greenery.

The original National Stadium

The stadium stands on the site of the previous National Stadium, which hosted the 1964 Summer Olympic Games. These Games were the first Olympics to be held in Asia and the first to be broadcast around the world in color (albeit partially). For Japan, the Games were deeply symbolic of the rebuilding of the nation after the devastation of World War II and its reintegration into the international community. Emperor Hirohito officially opened the 14-day event.

The stadium hosted the Asian Games and athletics World Championships as well as international and domestic soccer and rugby matches. It was also the venue for a concert by The Three Tenors in 1996.

Despite this rich legacy, however, there were problems. The stadium's capacity was less than 60,000, it had no roof for the majority of spectators, and had suffered general wear-and-tear. Therefore, the government decided to demolish the structure and replace it with a state-of-the-art facility—one suitable for a city bidding to host the 2020 Games.

tokyo tour football

Overcoming issues

In November 2012, the Japanese government announced that British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid had won the bid for the design of the new stadium with a truly space-age concept. However, concerns with costs and aesthetics led to the shelving of that plan. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma then took over the reins in collaboration with construction firms Taisei Corporation and Azusa Sekkei.

tokyo tour football

A facility for the present and future

Athletes representing 151 nations will parade into the 68,000-capacity stadium during the Opening Ceremony to kick off the Olympic buzz. Athletic heats will make up many of the initial events, leading up to the crown jewel in the track and field calendar—the men's 100-meter final. After the Closing Ceremony, organizers have 16 days to prepare the venue for the Paralympic Games, which will see around 4,400 athletes competing in 22 sports.

Once the games are over, the stadium will be used for soccer and rugby matches for Japan's national teams, as well as hosting domestic cup finals. The stadium is central to Tokyo's future bids for other major regional sporting tournaments, such as the Asian Games or the Asian Athletics Championships. The government has also confirmed that it will be used for cultural events.

Japan National Stadium Tour

Time out says.

As spectators were not allowed into the Japan National Stadium during the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games , this tour is probably your only chance to see the inside of the majestic facility designed by Japanese starchitect Kengo Kuma. While the stadium is currently under renovation, it’s open on Sundays and national holidays throughout November and December for those who want to reminisce about the recently concluded sporting event. You’ll be able to enjoy views of the stadium from the bleachers on the fourth floor of the facility’s northern area. It’s not actually a tour per se, but you can move around freely and take photos in the designated area for an hour.

The stadium tour is available on November 7, 14, 21, 23 and 28, as well as on December 5, 12 and 26. Entry is staggered every 30 minutes but you can stay for up to an hour.  Advance registration is necessary (¥1,000, high school students and younger ¥500, free for preschool children) and has to be made five days prior to the tour. Note that payments are only accepted in cash on the day of your visit.

Description : The Tokyo Dome was the first indoor stadium built in Japan. It is not only the home of the Giants, but also hosts a multitude of concerts and other events throughout the year. “The Big Egg” has an air-supported roof and looks quite similar to the old Metrodome in Minneapolis.

It is nearly always sold out, and has facilities surrounding it to provide entertainment for more than just the three hours of baseball. The Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame is adjacent to the stadium, as is an amusement park area called Tokyo Dome City.

More often than not, when baseball teams from the majors play in Japan, games will be at the Tokyo Dome. In one tournament game in November 2016,  Shohei Ohtani hit a ball through a seam in the dome’s roof , becoming the first and only player to hit an out-of-the-park home run at the Tokyo Dome.

Not only is the stadium a point of interest for baseball fans, but it is also used as a point of reference when talking about other large spaces throughout Japan. (Example: Celebrity X’s property is the equivalent of 5 Tokyo Domes in area.)

*The  Nippon-Ham Fighters  play around eight home games each year at the Tokyo Dome, giving their Tokyo-based fans a chance to see them play in their former home.

Taylor Swift says ‘life flashed before my eyes' following slip at Tokyo concert

After all, the "Anti-Hero" singer nearly tumbled off one of the set builds during her Feb. 9 Eras Tour show in Tokyo.

"I almost fell off the Folklore cabin," Swift said after finishing her Feb. 9 performance of "The 1," "But I didn't and that's the lesson."

Quipping about how scared she was, the 34-year-old added, "My life flashed before my eyes. No, I'm good. Everything's fine, everything's great."

And while the Grammy winner was cracking jokes directly following the slip, she also expressed her honest relief to be back on holy ground.

"I'm just so happy that I didn't fall off the Folklore cabin, you know what I mean?" Swift continued with a sigh. "It was right as I was taking my harness off too."

Luckily, the "Blank Space" singer didn't take a tumble as she possibly has a busy weekend ahead—and not just because of her final Tokyo show Feb. 10. Her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is gearing up for the 2024 Super Bowl Feb. 11—where his team will take on the San Francisco 49ers—and she should have more than enough time to make it to Las Vegas to cheer him on.

"I love it when Taylor comes and supports me and enjoys the game with the fam and friends," Kelce gushed on " The Pat McAfee Show " back in January. "We're just two people supporting each other and having fun with it, man."

In fact, the NFL star — who's also returned the sentiment by joining Swift for her Nov. 11 Eras Tour show in Argentina — is such a fan of Taylor's cheer efforts, he's already made her an honorable member of the squad.

"Shoutout to Tay," Kelce joked during a Jan. 30 episode of his "New Heights" podcast. "Thanks for joining the team."
