Watching the Dirty three live is an experience that will rock, vibrate, and touch you to your souls. Founded in Australia, with three members, the band has a huge international calling and fanbase. Their sound is instrumental rock, and the undertones of their australian roots abound in their songs.Watching the Dirty three do a live performance reminds you that for them, it’s all about the music. No frills at these shows, just three men and their instruments. You won’t find fancy lights, smoke, or any other over the top stage props. The band members themselves are very casual , and often face each other instead of the audience. That’s how you know that they truly have love for the music, not just the fame. The audience is super loyal to the band, and seems to feel the music with their souls, and you cannot help dancing or swaying along, as the band plays fan favorites. The best part about the band is that they are all instrumental, with no singer . This allows the essence of the music, and the emotion of the sounds to shine through. They tour all over the world , and have a huge US fanbase, as well as Europe and Australia. I would recommend spending time and enjoying the melodic sounds of the Dirty Three.

Dirty Three Australia
Dirty Three – Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White – formed up their guitar drums and violin or viola in 1992, and have cut six albums and toured over the planet since then. Individually pursued collaborations with other esteemed talents have limited their time together lately, but they do still get together to renew the vow, rev the engines, play some shows, make an album. It’s always great. ... more

DIRTY THREE
The wait is over. Prayers have been answered; 5 years since their last whistle stop visit and 12 years since that last national tour Warren Ellis , Mick Turner and Jim White a/k/a Dirty Three finally return.
Already announced as a marquee act at Melbourne’s Rising Festival, Mick, Jim and Warren will bring their collective energies to venues in Canberra, Thirroul, Sydney, Fremantle, Adelaide, Hobart, Brisbane and Byron Bay this June.
“What joy to kick off the tour for our new album “Love Changes Everything “ in Melbourne Australia for the Rising Festival. Recorded in 5 days. Mixed in a year. Nothing has changed. Older and meaner, sadder and totally dangerous. Dirty Three are Thirty Three years old. Come blow out the candles and help us stick a knife in the cake.” – Warren Ellis London 2024
The trio that paints notes like stars in the sky. Back with new compositions to play and new stories to tell. They don’t get together very often these days. But to see them perform is to witness three men shoulder-deep in the task. The aching splendour. The meandering beauty. The mammoth swirl.
“For two hours, Dirty Three were the greatest band on any planet in any universe.” – FBi Sydney State Theatre review
“It’s impossible to find flaw with the performance, though its x factor is something collectively felt. A kind of accruing, song by fiery song, of irrefutable proof as to how truly great this band is.” – Sydney Opera House review – The Guardian
“Their songs, you know, maybe saved someone’s life.” They’re one of the world’s greatest living bands without a shadow of a doubt … It speaks straight to your heart.” – Jen Cloher (musician)

Dirty Three announce new album and Australian tour
- X (formerly Twitter)
Acclaimed Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three will soon release their first album in over a decade, with their ninth LP Love Changes Everything due for release on Friday 14 June.
They'll then take their unique, dynamic and always powerful live show on the road for a 10-date tour of the country taking in some big rooms and beautiful theatres.
The news comes after the band were locked in as a major drawcard on this year's RISING festival announcement, where they'll play Melbourne's majestic Hamer Hall across two nights.
These shows, which kick off their tour, will be Dirty Three's first shows in five years, and first Melbourne shows in 12 years.
The band's new album features six new tracks, titled 'Love Changes Everything I' through 'Love Changes Everything VI', and is said to capture the band at their regular, spellbinding best.
While you can grab a physical copy of the album on Friday 14 June, fans will have to wait an extra fortnight if they just want to listen online as its digital release is not until Friday 28 June, when the Australian tour will just about be over.
Bandleader and violinist/violist Warren Ellis commented on the new record in typically straightforward fashion.
"Recorded in five days. Mixed in a year. Nothing has changed. Older and meaner, sadder, and totally dangerous. Dirty Three are 32 years old. Come blow out the candles and help us stick a knife in the cake."
Ellis, guitarist Mick Turner and drummer Jim White might not have been a constant presence in our lives over the past three decades, but every time they emerge from their moments of quiet, they remind us what a singular, deeply emotional musical force they are combined.
Catch Dirty Three playing the following shows. Tickets are on sale Thursday 4 April.
Friday 14 June – RISING @ Hamer Hall, Melbourne
Saturday 15 June – RISING @ Hamer Hall, Melbourne

Here’s an excerpt from my review of Dirty Three’s performance at the Sydney State Theatre in 2014:
Ellis’ playing is often, rightfully so, the focus of the audience’s attention as he high-kicks accents within the songs, leaps onto a chair, hugs friends in the front row and throws his shoulders and greying hair back and bellows wordless howls into the lavish deco surrounds of the State Theatre. His violin is a pure extension of his personality… raw, unfettered and hopelessly romantic. He conjured up pain and loss, nihilism and wide-eyed optimism through dissonance, restraint and wild abandon. Without White and Turner by his side the effect would be distilled by two thirds. Their roles are equally as essential to the often overwhelming emotional impact the band creates.
Jim White was the effortless whirling dervish behind the kit, creating polyrhythmic travels through gypsy, jazz, avant-garde, Krautrock and post-rock worlds. The man just doesn’t stop playing – constantly adding tambourines, changing sticks, discarding parts of his kit and only really settling into anything resembling standard rock drumming in sections of ‘Indian Love Song’ and ‘Sue’s Last Ride’. Meanwhile, standing with shoulder to the seated audience, the near stationary Mick Turner is the calm at the centre of the storm, the musical anchor who fills the role of both rhythm guitarist and bassist. His droning chords hung in the staid theatre air, arpeggios were nonchalantly plucked. his majestically sombre playing sounding both ancient and mournful. Losing oneself in each of the player’s sound and styles is the key to full sensory immersion and the ultimate reward of a Dirty Three performance.

Official Website Myspace Page Dirty Three on YouTube Booking / Publicity Info Band Bio: The Dirty Three forged from a need to pay the rent in 1993. The main concern was to try and take a band photo in a rehearsal, albeit brief. The band originally played background MUZAK in the corner of a bar, a bar probably not too dissimilar from your living room. The band's volume outgrew the venue, so they took on stages, stages with PA's. There was also some problem about a stolen mop bucket. Dirty Three's music has been called lyrical, passionate, original, inspiring, and has earned them admiration and renown across the globe, from their home in Australia, to New Orleans to New York City and back again.

Dirty Three, instrumental rock explorers, climbs mountains with wheelbarrows

Warren Ellis is basking in the memory of a time, in the mid-1990s, when Dirty Three — the dirge-y and/or deafening instrumental combo the violinist had formed with guitarist Mick Turner and drummer Jim White in Melbourne — became an unlikely staple within the international rock underground.
“It was fabulous. We got to play this music in front of an audience that we probably had more hope of turning on to our stuff than any other scene,” Ellis says of the period when the band gigged both at home and abroad with everyone from Pavement and Blonde Redhead to Beck and the Beastie Boys .
“The thing that drove us was that we were always in the pursuit of … just that creative freedom,” the resplendently gray-bearded violinist adds. “Is that fair to say, Jim?”
“Yeah, I think that’s great,” comes the typically pared-down response from the stubble-faced White, looking on from an adjacent Zoom window and taking occasional bites off a handheld cucumber.
Now dispersed around the world — Ellis in Paris and White in Brooklyn, with Turner the only one of the Three still residing in the band’s hometown — the members were all back in Melbourne, rehearsing for their first Australian tour in more than a decade. The occasion was the impending release of Love Changes Everything , out June 28, their first new album since 2012 and their second for revered Chicago indie label Drag City.
Across the past three decades, each of the Three has become a celebrated presence outside the group: Ellis with a slew of Nick Cave projects, including the Bad Seeds, a duo album and numerous soundtrack collaborations; White with a murderers row of contemporary songwriting greats including Cat Power , Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Bill Callahan , the prolific lute-drums duo Xylouris White , and as of this year, his own subtly enthralling solo project ; and Turner as a prolific solo artist, generous collaborator and accomplished painter, whose earthy, evocative images have adorned most Dirty Three releases, including the latest.
Amid their many individual pursuits, they’ve sporadically made time to tend the Dirty Three flame — which, despite increasingly lengthy breaks, somehow seems to burn brighter each time. Taking the form of a six-part suite, Love Changes Everything finds their core aesthetic expanding in challenging and often breathtaking ways.
Ellis still sounds fired up by the chemistry they discovered during their early meetings. He cites the “sheer thrill” of “taking everything to as loud as you can and dropping it down to nothing, and nobody knows what’s going to happen next. It was kind of — explorers. We were climbing Mt. Everest.”
“With a wheelbarrow,” White chimes in, smiling slyly.
“Huh?” Ellis asks, not catching the remark.
“Climbing Mt. Everest with a wheelbarrow,” the drummer offers. This time, the metaphor lands, and he, Ellis and Turner all crack up in unison.
'You had to take risks with Dirty Three, always'
It would be hard to think of a more apt image to illustrate the quest the trio have been on since the spring of 1992, when the three friends and collaborators from the Melbourne scene met up in Ellis’ kitchen, put together a provisional set and performed the same night at the Bakers Arms, a hotel in the city’s Abbotsford neighborhood. They gigged there regularly, finding their sound without the benefit of a stage, a PA or even a bass drum. Friends suggested they get a singer, but they saw no need.
“We just kind of felt like what we were doing was expressive enough,” Ellis says.
“There was a trust from the start: You had to take risks with Dirty Three, always,” he continues. “Just jump in and it either worked or fell flat on its face. And the three of us liked having this place that we could come and just take risks and be creative.”
“And get some free drinks,” the bespectacled, soft-spoken Turner adds with a smile.
They put out their debut LP, Sad & Dangerous , in 1994 and worked their way up to high-profile local opening slots in Melbourne and across Australia. The following year, they made the jump to America, issuing their second, self-titled LP through an earlier Chicago indie staple, Touch and Go, playing both support and headlining gigs and even doing a stint on Lollapalooza’s second stage.
As heard on Dirty Three , their sound often felt almost primordial, with Turner’s forlorn chord progressions, Ellis’ rustic fiddle (sometimes replaced by accordion or piano) and White’s sparse, wind-rustling-through-leaves percussion — making brilliant use of woodblock and tambourine in addition to the conventional drum kit — transporting the listener back to some shadowy, firelit gathering, before music was contained by anything so mundane as a rock club. Other times, they stomped like a backwoods Led Zeppelin .
Pavement’s Bob Nastanovich recalls meeting the Three through Stephen Pavlovic, who handled Australian releases for various American indie acts on his label, Fellaheen Records. The trio opened for Pavement in Melbourne in 1994 and subsequently supported them in clubs across the U.S.
“We enjoyed getting blown off the stage, but after seeing these guys, then subsequently playing dozens of shows with them, it became obvious that it was going to be a repetitive situation,” Nastanovich tells NPR Music, adding, “I can honestly tell you that walking onstage after the Dirty Three is like walking on hot coals.”
David Viecelli, aka Boche Billions, Dirty Three’s U.S. booking agent since their first visits in the ‘90s, remembers being instantly impressed by the band. “It was just so distinctive, so creative, and it just had its own world, some of which was bewildering and disorienting and some of which was incredibly charming,” he says. Viecelli watched the trio build an American audience in real time, on the strength of both their music and Ellis’ rambling, fantastical and darkly hilarious between-song storytelling.
“They did get traction fairly quickly, and I think a big part of that was people seeing them live,” he adds. “You wouldn’t have seen anybody like it.”
8 Tracks: Life's a mess, then it's over
The band’s early U.S. tours, beautifully chronicled in a 2007 documentary by Darcy Maine, were ramshackle affairs that privileged adventure over comfort, or even basic practicality.
“Mick bought a car. It was a gold — I want to say a Duster or a Galaxie 500,” Viecelli recalls. “They drove the whole tour, all over the whole country, in that. And the gear was strapped to the roof, including Jim's drums, which were then exposed to the elements the whole tour: heat, rain, all of it. So they gradually were destroyed over the course of the tour.”
Looking back on his various experiences on the road with White over the years — both co-billing with Dirty Three and featuring the drummer in his band — Will Oldham (aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy) notes a similarly lax attitude toward the logistics of travel.
“We would go on tour and he would have this suitcase full of, like, books and rocks and junk and then just wear the same shirt and suit every day, and the same dress shoes,” Oldham recalls with obvious amusement. “And if we were going to go for a hike, he would just go for a hike in his dress shoes and his suit and his pink button-up shirt.”
Nastanovich recounts a time when he, White and Ellis took in some local culture in Barcelona before their bands shared a bill there. “I remember, after a brief soundcheck for both Pavement and Dirty Three, Jim realized that there was live bullfighting, corrida de toros , across the street,” he says. “It was a very memorable day because the three of us — Jim, Warren and myself — went over for about an hour and a half and had this amazing experience — a gruesome one, to an extent — watching bullfighting.”
Continents and years apart, Dirty Three still resonates
Within the band, the adventure was, and continues to be, the music itself. Turner, who worked in a slew of bands prior to Dirty Three, including the live-wire art-punk act Venom P. Stinger, which featured White behind the kit, recalls feeling an instant spark when the trio convened.
“It was the most exciting musical project I’d ever been involved with, for sure,” he says. “It was so open and creative, and I think we were just lucky that, musically, we all clicked. It’s not that common to just start playing music with people and it just works for you.”
Dirty Three: Tiny Desk Concert
Live in Concert
Nick cave and the bad seeds, live in concert: sxsw 2013.
On later releases, including the gritty, crackling Horse Stories and the forlorn, almost unbearably lovely, Steve Albini –recorded Ocean Songs , the group’s sonic tales unfolded like a wondrous fever dream — sometimes melancholy, sometimes ecstatic — while on 2000’s Whatever You Love, You Are and 2003’s She Has No Strings, Apollo , they sprawled out with an elegiac splendor.
Cinder , from 2005, found them streamlining their compositions and adding voice on a pair of enchanting tracks, one featuring a wordless turn from The Mekons ’ Sally Timms and one with vocals and lyrics from avowed Dirty Three superfan Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power . In the Dirty Three documentary, Marshall professed an “addiction” to the band, citing the intense emotions they stirred in her. “I was just completely shocked that they would have a vocalist,” she said of being asked to collaborate with them, “and so honored.”
Aside from 2012’s Toward the Low Sun , the roughly two decades since have been relatively quiet for the group. But as Will Oldham points out, the DNA of the Dirty Three has persisted in the members’ various other pursuits.
“Each of their personalities and their musical personas or projects or trajectories or entities is fully present in each moment, so that each thing that each of them does separately is connected to and points back to, and forward to, what they do together as the Dirty Three,” Oldham says. “We were all introduced to Jim and Mick and Warren through the Dirty Three, and then everything they do after that, the Dirty Three resonates in all of it.”
Hearing them reunited on Love Changes Everything feels especially potent and poignant. Each track on the record is its own kind of gem: the rising-from-the-muck avant-rock of part I; part III, with its floating, impressionistic vibe; the soothing free-jazz-like swell of part VI.
“We haven't made a record for — whatever it is — 10, 12 years,” Ellis says. “We've all made lots of records between that, so it's not like the thirst to create had disappeared. I mean, we've all been really busy: Mick's been painting, Jim's been touring, playing, making records, and I have, and that's just all grist to the mill. I think we're really lucky in that respect. It's been great for the band.”
These days, the musicians keep up with one another, but in a seemingly hands-off way.
“I sent you my record, didn’t I, Warren?” White asks Ellis of his new solo effort, All Hits: Memories .
“Yeah, you did,” Ellis answers with a tone that suggests that the two hadn’t yet made a point of discussing what he’d thought of it.
“We don’t stalk each other,” Turner adds with a laugh.
That’s probably because they know, intuitively, that what they had in the beginning — the risk, as well as the reward — will always be there.
“We couldn’t have made this record 30 years ago,” Ellis says of Love Changes Everything . “It was just a trust in getting in the room and playing and seeing what would happen.”
Correction June 24, 2024
An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Dirty Three’s 2005 album Cinder included the group’s first work that featured vocals. It had released songs with vocals before that time.

The first two shows sold out so we're inviting the legendary instrumental trio to play a dirty third at The Forum. Subscriber presale starts at 10am, Thu 9 May.
New expanses to create. New music to share. The legendary trio Dirty Three are finally home.
The trio that paints notes like stars in the sky. Back with new compositions to play and new stories to tell, Dirty Three return with their first hometown headline show in 12 years.
No one does it like Dirty Three. Ever since their first gig at an Abbotsford pub in 1992—when Warren Ellis fastened a pickup to his violin with a rubber band to give it some extra snarl—they’ve been following their own path.
While their peers were doing grunge, they were facing each other onstage, making rock without the ego. Jazz without the histrionics. Folk without the troubadours. Improvising rumbling, wide-open instrumentals that pull you in like oil-painted landscapes.
They don’t get together very often these days. But to see them perform is to witness three men shoulder-deep in the task. And to host their hometown return at Hamer Hall after so many years is a scintillating prospect indeed. The aching splendour. The meandering beauty. The mammoth swirl. It's Dirty Three.
“ It’s impossible to find flaw with the performance, though its x factor is something collectively felt. A kind of accruing, song by fiery song, of irrefutable proof as to how truly great this band is. ”

Dirty Three Chronology I
(february 1992 - november 2012: melbourne -chicago -paris -brooklyn).
Brief early history Mick Turner (born in Black Rock-Melbourne on 12 January, 1960): starts his musical career in 1979 as member of the Sick Things (1979-1982, with a slight return in 1988). Several members of the Sick Things, inluding Mick, formed the short-lived Spew Forth in 1982 before establishing Fungus Brains (1982-1989). During the same period he also joins Dave Graney's The Moodists , with which he's touring overseas for the first time (UK, Europe and US in 1983-1984). When Fungus Brains are put on hold Mick forms Venom P. Stinger (1986-1994), a band with Dugald McKenzie, Alan Secher-Jensen and drummer Jim White. Jim White (born in Clifton Hill-Melbourne on 30 December, 1962): starts his musical career as member of the Happy Orphans in 1980, with Conway Savage [later of Bad Seeds fame]. The next band he joins are People With Chairs Up Their Noses (1981-1982). From 1982-1984 he's drumming for the Feral Dinosaurs , a band again with Conway Savage. In 1984 he's briefly in Brainshack , a band with Fungus Brains members (excluding Mick). He joins Mick Turner in Venom P. Stinger (1986-1994), a band which also briefly tours the US in 1991. In 1989 he's in the short-lived Hessian Sax , followed by King Idiot in 1990/91. In April 1992 Jim joins Kim Salmon's Trouble Makers , in June he and Warren both join David McComb's The Blackeyed Susans and Megan Bawden's short-lived Busload Of Faith , taking over drums from Tony Pola [Beasts Of Bourbon]. Late 1992 Jim joins Charlie Marshall's Body Electric , again with Warren. Warren Ellis (born in Ballarat on 14 February, 1965): starts his musical career in a school band called Paranoid . They only rehearsed, did one live show (1985-1986), and never recorded. Then he sang with a band in Melbourne called Well which played for six or nine months. In 1986 he's also briefly in These Future Kings . On January 1st, 1988 Warren leaves Australia for London (to meet a girl who did not show up), then travelling for 9-10 months in Scotland, Ireland and Hungary. Together with other musicians he's busking in the streets and bars, traveling from town to town. It is during this period that he learns to play the violin properly and to appreciate the impact of folk music songs on people. After returning to Melbourne he's working as a kitchenhand and cleaner, followed by a stay in Gippsland, in country Victoria, where he teaches at Bairnsdale High School for 18 months. In 1991 he returns to Melbourne joining Busload Of Faith . By January 1992 Warren joins Charlie Marshall's Body Electric with Jim White. In April 1992 Warren joins Jim in Kim Salmon's Trouble Makers and in June 1992 David McComb's The Blackeyed Susans , again with Jim White. When Noel Fermanis, a friend, opens a bar at the Baker's Arms hotel on Victoria Street, he asks Warren for a band to play live background music. Warren asks Jim White and Jim asks Mick Turner. They rehearse/improvise some 5-6 tunes in Warren's kitchen and perform the same night in front of an audience of 3 friends or so. The next rehearsal they record and it was later (partially) released as the "Sad and Dangerous" album (1994. Poon Village/Forced Exposure-USA). Their residency at the Bakers Arms bar allows them to experiment with their intrumental music.
xx-Feb-92 AU Melbourne-Abbotsford,Bakers Arms Hotel
Photo: Google street view, January 2010. Note 1: First concerts at the bar of the Bakers Arms Hotel (@ 355 Victoria Street). The hotel opened in 1876, before that it was a bakery. The pub was then owned by Noel Fermanis who in later years also owned The Great Britain (in Richmond), the Builders Arms (in Fitzroy), the Montague (in South Melbourne), The Retreat Hotel (in Abbotsford), the Windsor Castle (in Windsor), Yelza (in Fitzroy), the Edinburgh Castle (in Brunswick), the Wesley Anne (in Northcote) and the Royal Oak Hotel (in Fitzroy). Note 2: "We had pretty crappy food back then [when the Bakers Arms opened in 1990]," [Noel Fermanis] says bluntly. "But people weren't going there for the food. We were surrounded by cheap restaurants and people were eating Vietnamese." From The Age, 23-Jun-04. Note 3: "We got together because it helped us pay the rent. A friend of mine bought a bar in Melbourne, and rather than playing records, he wanted to have live music. I hadnt seen him for about eight years or something, and when I bumped into him, he said hed bought this bar and he knew I played music, so he said Why dont you get a group together and come down and play? So, Id just met Jim and Mick about two or three months before this took place, and we met up in my kitchen, worked out half a dozen songs, and went down and played there that night. That was kind of why we started really. We werent actually that focused: we just went down and played, we didnt have a concept for the group or anything. These were just the instruments we played, there was no PA and none of us could sing, so that wiped out vocals from the start." Warren Ellis interviewed by Damien Love in 1998. Note 4: "The Dirty Three [..] played regularly at a Melbourne bar, the Bakers Arms Hotel in Abbotsford, two sets a night for sixty bucks. The venues space, however, was so unsuited for the threepiece band that White couldnt even fit a bass drum near the staging area. I was only using a hi-hat, cymbal, floor tom, snare, and one cymbal, the drummer says. The first couple of shows we played, Warren and Mick plugged into one amp. We could fit everything for the show in the bootor trunkof the car. [..] I mean, at that time I was playing with one hand what could be defined as kick patterns on the floor tom. Jim White, in Modern Drummer, February 2013.

The Violin. Warren Ellis was animalistic in his performance and alongside Mick Turner (bass) and Jim White (drums) the trios wall of sound violated every cavity in my body. Everything in me and around me vibrated, radiating from Ellis boots repeatedly hitting the wooden floorboards of the century-old stage. The 45-minute set, comprised their recently released debut album Dirty Three, was one long instrumental epic that peaked in a crescendo of chaos that was the undoing of me." "We set up an East Coast tour to promote the album release, revolving around a long weekend. I was so convinced on their live power, that if I got them the right shows in Sydney on the way up, then a return show on the way back would go really well. They played with the Rollins Band in Canberra (equal intensity) and at the Annandale as a headline with Kim Salmon solo supporting. They continued up to Q'ld and Paul Curtis (Regurgitator manager) helped me put together their Brisbane run through a string of cafes, and even lunchtime shows. By the second show they had to turn people away. Word was really strong. Equally on their way back to Sydney, they played an afternoon public holiday show at the Sando [Sandringham Hotel]. Word had got around. It was packed to overflowing. They continued down to Melbourne and played their first headliner at the Punters Club, again with Kim supporting. It was another full house! They/I couldn't believe it. It seemed their entire destiny was sealed in that two-week period." Note: "[A] 1970s Music Man 115 Sixty-Five amplifier [was] bought in the USA in the 90s for Dirty Threes first USA tour. Put it on a plane to UK at the end of that tour to do several epic Dirty Three European tours then eventually it ended up a Warren Ellis home in Paris. At one point I had to bolt the speaker back into the cabinet. Its rusty and fucked up and definitely the best sounding amp ever, been around the block so many times and still so sweet. Have bought it out for the Mess Esque [2022] European tour." Mick Turner's recollections. " A little more provenance. Warren purchased this at the Starving Musician, on Stevens Creek Blvd, Santa Clara, CA, March 1995. I drove, it was rainy that day, and it was really fun hanging with Warren (I had previously met Jim White and Mick Turner in 1991 [with Venom P. Stinger]). So, Warren was trying out equipment, and when testing this amp, he played a guitar through it, full blast. He was doing some outrageous metal guitar soloing, and the shop guys yelled out: Sign him up! Warren had a sheepish grin on his face." Recollections by Karl Ikola, who organized one of Dirty Threes first shows in America.

"It was frustrating to see a band of the Dirty Three's caliber open at the American, because so few people appreciated them that it sort of defeated the purpose. Their sprawling music draws from jazz and is fueled by an obvious passion and depth. Led by the remarkable violin work of Warren Ellis, Dirty Three's music flew by the majority of the pop lovers in attendance, and those who did care couldn't see well enough to appreciate it. Yes, they were phenomenal, but it could have been John Coltrane up there onstage performing and this audience would have still been screaming for Beck."

"[..] we could say that this trio was perhaps not as successful at connecting with an impatient audience because they did dodge a few cups, ice cubes and what-not. One more flying bit and drummer Jim White may have surrendered to his rage, leapt over his kit and walloped a few brats." Note: Warren Ellis: "We did a tour with Beck and in September we played an old place in Tulsa, Texas (sic), owned by some playboy. His name was all over the place, all over the stage. When we played there the place went ballistic - they started throwing biscuits and coins and bits of paper at us. Then the audience started fighting, the people who liked us against the people who hated us. When we finished, some fat guy, I think he was the promoter of the place, came over to us with two blonde women. And he said: 'Well, for $20 they'll take their clothes off. And for $50 they'll do whatever you want 'em to.'"

Note 1: Warren Ellis: "Then, one time we were playing this small club and it was packed, so packed that the bar staff were walking across the stage with trays of drinks. A waitress walked behind me and I didn't know she was there - I put my hand right through a glass on her tray. By the end of the song, there was blood everywhere, all over the violin and all over the drum kit. That was in Ljubljana in Slovenia. I went off to hospital and they stitched me up. When it was done, I went back to the venue and the crowd had waited around, so we played the rest of the show." (from an interview printed in The Sydney Morning Herald 27-Dec-96). Note 2: Fan: "Yes, I was there at the concert where [Warren Ellis] cut his hand. It was in the middle of November [sic] 1996. Orto was completely crowded, full of people to the last corner. (By the way, this is one of the best rock clubs in Ljubljana.) People were drinking and smoking a lot. It was so crowded that the waiters had a lot of problems getting through to deliver drinks to customers. Warren was on the small stage, surrounded with people. As he does most of the time, he was facing the other two, the drummer and the guitarist, with his back to the public. The concert was at its peak and Warren was in his "moment" when he swung his right hand back and hit a glass that someone [from the bar staff] was carrying past. The glass broke and cut his hand. They brought him to the hospital immediately. We were shocked. We thought the concert had ended. But after a half-hour or so [2 hours], Warren was back with his hand in a bandage. He took the violin and resumed the concert. The crowd was yelling enthusiastically. It was crazy... incredible. He played the concert to the end and the crowd stood up to show respect. He was shining like a diamond and the shine went to the crowd. After the concert, he was sitting with a girl at a table, drinking. It was nearly early morning when I left the club with my cousin. Warren's eyes caught mine and when I passed him, he stood up, gave me a hand and kissed me. It was a friend saying goodbye to a friend. Even though we didn't know each other, we had shared a very special world of emotions, courage, sincerity, art and magic. The lovers of great music understand what I mean."

Ellis' hand is bleeding after a close encounter with bandmate Mick Turner's guitar. Ellis' playing was so frenzied that he lost track of where he was. And next week [14-Mar-12], the band will again put their bodies on the line. "I remember that!" Ellis says down the line from his home in Paris. "I've still got a really big scar from that." Apparently that wasn't the only damage Ellis inflicted on himself back then in New Zealand. "I decided to go swimming and surfing and ended up in an ambulance having to go to hospital because I got thrown and then ground into the bottom of the sea. They thought my neck had been broken. Apr/Aug-97 Warren Ellis: "We had a break for about five months; we went off the road in about April, after an American tour we ended up in London, stopped touring for about five months. Mick Turner released a solo album, started playing with Jim White, and they did the Tren Brothers record. I went on tour with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for three [two] months in Europe." "We had a break in April for five months until we recorded the ["Ocean Songs"] record and we all did different things. I think that was so constructive as a group, because we had reached a point at the end of our last American tour it was like if we didn't take a break then we were gonna break. We were walking a really thin line, because the performances had become really volatile and quite violent and hysterical. It really was getting quite intense." Warren Ellis interviewed for the Boston Phoenix 15-May-98.
Aug/Sep-97 US IL,Chicago, Electric Audio (@ 2621 West Belmont Avenue),recording sessions for the "Ocean Songs" album, lasting a week. Engineered by Steve Albini. Songs recorded are: Sirena/ The Restless Waves/ Distant Shore/ Authentic Celestial Music/ Backwards Voyager/ Last Horse On The Sand/ Sea Above, Sky Below/ Black Tide/ Deep Waters/ Ends Of The Earth, and also: Three Wheels/ Wish I Could (both which ended up on the "Ufkuko" EP). Electric Audio was founded in 1997 by Steve Albini [Big Black, Shellac].
Photo: Google street view 2016. Note 1: "We sat down in a room for ten days and wrote a record. We'd never done that before. We met up in Chicago, and we had two very loose ideas before that, something Mick and I had been working on in Australia and another thing Mick had been messing around with when we were in Israel the year before [1995]. Other than that it was pretty much written in Chicago. We'd never done that before. I [...] flew out to Chicago, and we set up in this warehouse with all these heavy metal bands bashing away. We just sat in there and played really quiet. I guess it was probably because everything was so loud in there!" Warren interviewed in October 2006 by David Armes and Billy Hell for Perfect Sound Forever . Note 2: "Steve Albini gave me some words I live by when we recorded Ocean Songs with Dirty Three in 1997. We were lost in the middle of recording and about to give up. We were trying to make a quiet album and we were anything but quiet. Steve recognised the creative struggle Dont forget what you came in here to do . That albums existence as it is is down to his advice in a fragile moment of doubt. I think of this advice most times I am in the studio. A gentleman and pleasure to work with. Sending love to Heather and Electrical Audio family and Shellac." Warren Ellis after the passing of Steve Albini on May 7th, 2024 (@thewarrenellis).

04/05-Sep-97 IE County Cork,Skibbereen,Liss Ard estate Poetry & Music festival #1 [Nick Cave solo]
Note: Warren Ellis was to accompany Nick Cave (and Mick Harvey), but had to cancel due to a car crash on the way to Chicago airport. I had a car smash in Chicago, he told me on site in Skibbereen in September 98. By rights we should have been dead because we hit the back of a car, a friend was drunk driving, and we both went into the window, smashed it with our heads, and I was concussed and didnt know it. I had a fractured finger as well. They wouldnt let me on the plane because they thought I was gonna drop dead I still had blood all over my head and I didnt want to go to hospital cos I couldnt afford it. So, in the end, another airline took responsibility for me, they let me on the plane, I turned up, arrived in Nick [Cave]s house, went into shock and was just shaking, and my girlfriend came and took me home to Paris, where I went to hospital. So, I didnt make it." Ellis interviewed for Cursed Murphy .

Article: Scan from The Age newspaper, 24-Apr-98. "More tales of the Dirty Three's incident-packed tour. After Sunday night's sell-out show at the Governor Hindmarsh Tavern in Adelaide, a souvenir hunter grabbed Warren Ellis's favorite violin bow and high-tailed out of there. Some kids spotted the offender leaving the pub with the bow and followed him to the local McDonald's. It was all too much for the snoops when he flagrantly waved the bow in the air, and they made a rock 'n' roll arrest, grabbing a nearby police officer who escorted the culprit back to the pub to return the bow to Ellis who was winding down after the show. No charges were laid. Ellis, band and bow hit Melbourne next weekend.

His best friend and D3 sound mixer Norman Fagg was so grieved over the loss that he followed Andrew to an early grave. Norman did this just 24 hrs prior to the D3's 98 [1999,ed.] BDO appearance. That [Melbourne] show - with such an outpouring of grief and emotion - has got to be the best D3 show I've seen and an absolute BDO highlight. They were everything they are. Beautiful to the point of making you cry and completely cathartic with the rage that they can summon. The audience was stunned, overwhelmed. It was a real release for all the sorrow. Warren got blind that day and we ended up taking him to the hospital after he knocked himself out falling over a fence. It was a wild day. BDO has never had them back." Dirty Three Announce 2024 Australian Tour, First Album In 12 Years
Dirty Three have announced a full-scale tour of Australia, marking the first time they have done so since 2012 as well as their first shows anywhere in Australia since 2019. The announcement comes after the band were announced as part of the 2024 RISING festivities in Melbourne just last month, where the tour will commence with two sold-out nights at the city’s Hamer Hall. A complete list of the band’s June 2024 tour dates across Australia can be found below.
The tour comes in support of the band’s freshly-announced 10th studio album, which is entitled Love Changes Everything . According to frontman violinist Warren Ellis , the album was recorded in five days (all three members live in different countries to one another), but took a year to finish mixing. The album follows up February 2012’s Toward the Low Sun , marking the longest gap between releases in the band’s history.
Its release coincides with the tour, being released physically on Friday June 14th for purchase at the shows on vinyl and CD before its release on streaming services two weeks later on Friday June 28th. The album can be both pre-ordered and pre-saved by clicking here .
Every song on Love Changes Everything is technically its title track, with the six songs only differentiated by Roman numerals suffixed to the end. The opening song, ‘Love Changes Everything I’, has been released today (April 2) to coincide with the album and tour announcement.
Dirty Three – ‘Love Changes Everything I’
In a press statement regarding their upcoming shows, Ellis had this to say: “Nothing has changed. [We are] older, meaner, sadder and totally dangerous. Dirty Three are thirty-two years old. Come blow out the candles and help us stick a knife in the cake.”
Since the release of Toward the Low Sun , the three members have busied themselves with various projects. Ellis has made a further three albums as a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds : 2013’s Push the Sky Away , 2016’s Skeleton Tree and 2019’s Ghosteen . A new Bad Seeds album, Wild God , is set for release in August 2024. Cave and Ellis also made the collaborative album Carnage together, releasing it in 2021 before touring it into 2022 .
Drummer Jim White , meanwhile, released his debut solo album All Hits: Memories last Friday via Drag City. He has toured Australia with Xylouris White , Ed Kuepper and The Double in recent years. In 2021, he formed the supergroup Springtime with Gareth Liddiard and The Necks ‘ Chris Abrahams. They released their eponymous debut album that year before touring together in early 2022 .
As for guitarist Mick Turner , he has largely focused on his painting and his band Mess Esque . The latter released their self-titled debut album in 2021. More recently, he has collaborated with percussionist and composer Bree van Reyk for a series of improvised performances.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Dirty Three were bombastic and transcendent by Paddyf on 9/24/12 Brighton Music Hall - Boston. The very tight musicianship of this instrumental trio delivers music alternating between the feeling of floating on the ocean, with the waves gently lapping, metal cables creaking and straining, big crates thumping below decks, with birds and/or whales singing along.
This month, Dirty Three return with Love Changes Everything, their first new album in more than a decade. And along with it, a national tour. And along with it, a national tour.
