WIth headquarters in Las Vegas, Bindlestiff Tours specialize in single day tours in their own backyard and multi-day adventures throughout the Southwest region, Canadian Rockies and Alaska. Extensive experience in the industry and knowledgeable, down-to-earth Guides affords Bindlestiff to create the absolute best itineraries.

Tour Guides Trips reach far and wide. As a Tour Guide for Bindlestiff, you may find yourself poking around an abandoned mining town in the desert southwest, atop a granite peak in Yosemite, in a raft on the Colorado River, hiking on a glacier in the Canadian Rockies, or watching bears catch salmon in a remote Alaskan river!

Tour Guides are responsible for delivering in-depth headset commentary to guests on the geology, history, flora, and fauna of the region while driving a 7 or 15-passenger van. Multi-day tours require you to be comfortable towing a 5x8-foot cargo trailer. Additional responsibilities include handling group dynamics, food shopping and cooking, planning and problem solving on the road, maintaining outdoor equipment, managing accounting and paperwork pre and post tour, and ensuring a safe and fun experience for all clients.

Guide Requirements: • Must be at least 23 years of age • Current CPR/first aid certification • Able to pass a drug test and physical exam • Clean driving record • A class B commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement is preferred. However, a commercial driver's license is not required for those who possess a Nevada state issued driver's license or a driver's license that enables you to drive a 15-passenger vehicle.

Best Office View... Ever! While several one-day tours are offered in nearby parks such Death Valley and Zion, Bindlestiff's most popular trips are camping or hotel lodging overnight multi-day tours with visits to several parks over a few days. Bindlestiff offers tours to parks in the Southwestern USA (Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, The Grand Canyon, and more) as well as adventures to parks and areas in Alaska and the Western Canadian Rockies.

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour Tour

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

All We Could Have Asked For and More! We recently returned from the ""7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour"". Our tour was led by Kaitlyn Usher. The tour was wonderful, everything was near perfect and Kaitlyn is one of the kindest, hardest working and knowledgeable guides we've ever had! I had mentioned that my husband was turning 70 on the 1st day of the tour to someone at Bindlestiff 2 weeks before the tour and Kaitlyn had a small birthday cake and candles on that first lunch stop! What a nice surprise for my husband. Most anything we asked of her was taken care of and questions answered. We just can't say enough good things about her! The itinerary of the tour was great, we saw and did everything we wanted to do. The van was comfortable and kept clean by Kaitlyn every night. Plenty of items for the picnic lunches (a super idea). She always had options to match physical abilities. The 50 minute ride over the Grand Canyon (optional) was spectacular, the heliport is a distance from the rim, so be sure to do the longer ride to have enough canyon viewing time. The optional Hummer tour was very exciting and scary (in a good way). Thank you for a wonderful birthday trip and great memories!

Death Valley Day Tour from Las Vegas- Small Groups Tour

The all day Death Valley tour from Las Vegas was beautiful. But the best part was the guide, Joel, who shared his amazing knowledge base with us, was funny, and, best yet, had many interesting stories about history and particular individuals in Death Valley as well as Las Vegas. A magnificent day!

4 day Yellowstone and Tetons in depth tour from Salt Lake City Small Groups Tour

The Tour guides were the best I have ever encountered on any trip. They were very friendly and approchable. They were competent, diligent and worked efficiently with a good attitude. Wow! We covered a lot of ground in very few days: 4 days and 3 nights. We saw thw most beautiful natural wonders you can imagine. This tour surpasses many other companies who offer the same circuit, often on a longer period of time and at a higher price. We were showed and assisted in our all endeavours such as putting tents together, and taking them down. The food was excellent, both in quality and quantity! We spent evenings by the campfire singing in different languages and oneof the guides played 3 different instruments…How in earth could these guides pack so much stuff in a van??? They worked in harmony and were all geared at making our stay enjoyable and that in itself is remarkable! I will definitely travel with this company again. I just love them!

National Parks Winter Tour Tour

National Parks Winter Tour

I cannot recommend this trip enough. It was the best I've ever been on! Bindlestiff took us to so many places and saw so much and yet, it didn't feel rushed at all. The magnitude of National and State parks that we covered was remarkable, and I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in each. The group was very small- only 6 people. As a solo traveler, this was perfect because it allowed us to get to know each other and the friendly vibes felt so natural (no loneliness here!) Besides the sights, the obvious best thing about this trip was our guide, Joseph. He was the perfect balance of knowledgeable and fun, always making every effort to answer our questions, provide his own anecdotes and accommodate any of our special requests or preferences. Joseph is incredible and a true professional. The accomodation throughout the trip was excellent- all my needs were met and exceeded. Most hotels provided breakfast and, in the few incidences that they didn't, readily accessible alternatives were available. At first, I was concerned that picnic lunches would reduce the amount of time that we had to explore the sights. This wasn't the case at all. Joseph ensured that all lunches were well-catered and smoothly run. Originally, I'd planned to organize and self-navigate a trip similar to this all by myself. I am extremely glad that this plan didn't work out. Bindlestiff is an amazing company. If you are on the fence about booking this trip, don't be! You, like me, won't regret it for a single second.

Bryce & Zion Overnight Tour Tour

Bryce & Zion Overnight Tour

A group of us have traveled to Las Vegas for the last 6 years and are always looking to find interesting ways of seeing this wonderful area. We have a wide range of ages and a member of the group who makes the perfect travel researcher. Looking for a way that 9 of us could travel together as a small group she came upon Bindlestiff and made a pitch to the rest of us to try a camping adventure overnight ignorer to visit Zion and Bryce Canyons. So happy that we were brave enough to try their suggestions. Our guide, Rachel, met us with all of the gear that we would need but for our own personal needs. Traveling to Bryce she passed the time by presenting a wonderful background of the geology and history of the area that we were traveling through. Using several stops along the way to make sure that we were hydrated and had the fixings for lunch we arrived at Bryce to visit an exquisite creation of Mother Nature. We camped nearby at a very pleasant campground and had a quick lesson on setting up our campsite with tents and enjoyed a wonderful supper. Morning found us breaking camp and having a wonderful breakfast before we left for Zion. The van that we traveled in was very comfortable and we were able to really enjoy each others company on the excursion. We were never wanting of something. Rachel had all that we needed. it was a hot day in Zion but we experienced as much as the heat would allow. Returned that evening to Las Vegas with wonderful memories of a great adventure. None of us was too old ( 50's to 72) to enjoy all this trip had to offer, much to our delight.

4 day Alaska Seward Camping Adventure from Anchorage Tour

4 day Alaska Seward Camping Adventure from Anchorage

Amazing experience with Bindlestiff Tours! WOW - so much daylight! Especially in June!! We were a party of 4 - mom, dad and kids (teenage) traveling from Minnesota. This was our first trip to Alaska - and one of the first ""group"" trips we did in this style with the kids. We enjoyed integrating our kids into this way of travel, along with other travelers, in such a beautiful nature settings. It was really a hit - our kids LOVED the guide (Joe) - he was young (20's) and energetic and kept them entertained, and they loved helping with daily tasks around camp. About the tour - really inclusive and packs a big punch for 4 days! The daylight into midnight was really wild - we are happy we listened to the great packing list Bindlestiff provided (telling us to bring eye masks) - they really help! This tour company is awesome. They know what they are doing, and we always felt prepared from day 1 meeting the group and guide. Tons of sites on this tour - but our favorite was hiking to the Harding Icefield on day 1. We had good weather and had a clear shot of EXIT glacier - and even hiked in a little bit of snow! A big thank you to our guide and Bindlestiff for the organization and effort that goes into these trips. We are thinking about coming back next year for the 11-day Interior AK tour - it looks great!

Reviews of Bindlestiff Tours Tours

We did the 7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour with Adriann as our guide and it was outstanding! We drove through beautiful landscapes, had the opportunity to hike in all the national parks and were able to take great photos. Adriann is very accommodating, knows a lot about the individual places and manages to make the trip an unforgettable experience for everyone. We chose the camping option and didn't regret it. The sunrise over the Moment Valley was particularly unique! We can highly recommend Bindlestiff and especially Adriann Narciso :)
What a lifetime experience everyone needs Jun 2023 • Solo Within 7 days, we drove in 3 states, visited 5 national parks / 2 state parks, hiked 60 miles, made friends from 7 different states/nations, and eventually traveled through the iconic Route 66 back to Las Vegas. What a lifetime experience everyone needs Day 1 - Zion National Park Day 2 - Bryce Canyon National Park Day 3 - Canyonlands National Park Day 4 - Arches National Park Day 5 - Monument Valley Navajo Nation Day 6 - Grand Canyon National Park / Antelope State Day 7- Grand Canyon back to Las Vegas via Historic Route 66 AMAZING!
Mike Brown was the BEST guide I have ever had!! His knowledge of the history, culture, flora and fauna of the southwest was phenomenal. He was articulate and had a pleasing way of talking. He was also accommodating and helpful. wow! We were lucky to get him for our tour!

Bindlestiff Tours Logo UPDATED.png

What's a Bindlestiff?

A Bindlestiff is a Hobo of sorts. A person who carries their clothes or bedding in a bundle.   This is a pretty fitting name for the company, as the founders themselves came from a background of guiding adventure tours throughout North America in 15 passenger vans, living out of the backseats or camp trailers for weeks, no months on end. Sound familiar? Yep, that's what we do here at Bindlestiff Tours and we're looking for like minded people who want to carry on that lifestyle!

Read on for More F requently  Asked Questions

Where is Bindlestiff Tours Located?

Our office, warehouse & fleet is located at 4120 W Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, Nevada 89118. We just moved into our facility recently and we're loving the new space!

However, our trips reach far & wide. If you're guiding with us you may find yourself poking around an abandoned mining town in the desert southwest, atop a granite peak in Yosemite, in a raft on the Colorado River, listening to Jazz in New Orleans, hiking on a glacier in the Canadian Rockies or watching bears catch salmon in a remote Alaskan river!

Am I a good candidate to work with Bindlestiff Tours?

A good fit in general is a trustworthy person who does what they say they're going to do and has no problem communicating if they're having any kind of problem they need help with.

That being said, we also want people who can think on their feet, act responsibly in a wide variety of situations and always remain professional and courteous. We are in customer service and our guests come to us because we deliver a high quality product.

If you're working in our offices, behind the scenes, we're looking for efficient, friendly, fun people who bring solid organizational skills to the table as well as a supportive mindset when it comes to helping our guides out on the road and at base and of course when dealing with any of our guests, suppliers, or our tourism community.

If you're one of our guides, safety is number one. We have to make sure our guests stay safe so they get that trip of a lifetime experience. Safety and customer service fall into the same boat in our minds. In addition to this is the obvious fact that our guides need to be able to deliver a lot of knowledge of the areas they're guiding in a way that keeps the guests engaged. We do allow for flexibility, as every guide will do things a bit differently depending on their background and knowledge base. If you don't have a ton of knowledge in the areas we offer yet, don't worry. We'll set you up, we just need you to be astute at soaking the information in and being able to share it well with your passengers! Some of our guides have said one of the highlights of working with Bindlestiff tours is that they learn something new almost every time they go out on tour.

Does Bindlestiff provide employee housing?

Short answer: Yes, accommodation is available in many of our positions. We're looking for a wide variety of positions. Some of those would be year-round positions, which would require you to have housing of your own in the area. Some of our positions, however, would lend to being on the move quite most of the season. In this case, Bindlestiff would cover your accommodation while out on tour. While you're back in Vegas, shared bunkhouse on site accommodation is avail for free should you decide to utilize it. Many of our guides are local, or once hired, they'll often meet up with other like-minded guides and secure seasonal, shared accommodation here in Las Vegas together. We'll judge the need as we get into our main operating season and keep you posted as we go through the hiring process.

How much does each position pay?

Our guides pay is not a static rate, rather it is per trip day and varies with years of experience. As we move forward through the hiring process, we would share more detailed information.

Due to the fact that tipping and commissions are a known part of the industry, some of our experienced guides earn as much as $500 per day. Our base rates range from $145 to $205 per day depending on industry experience.

We offer a generous seasonal bonus package as well including a 401k plan, which we can discuss in more detail during the interview process.

Pay for office staff is dependent upon experience and will be discussed during our interview and offer process.

What if I don't have a ton of experience driving a large vehicle or guiding tours yet?

As you may have seen in our job ad, we require all driver's to be at least 23 years of age and have a clean driving record. In addition to that we screen our applicants for driving history and experience as well as life experience that shows leadership ability and responsible past behaviour. We take time to train our drivers and guides through a mentorship style, hands on program, which ensures each guide is ready to head out on tour with their guests. We also supply detailed information for our tours and ensure you have a deep understanding of the places, routes and accommodations of each trip you're assigned.

What if a concert or a wedding or something comes up that I want to go to during the season?

Yeh, we get it, but as you'll see in our application, we're looking for people who can fully commit to our season. The tourism industry is full on here in the summer and we need all hands on deck throughout the full season. It's just the nature of seasonal work and the dynamics that go into scheduling for the season require that level of commitment. However, if we have discussed a certain date during your interview, before time of hiring, we will certainly take that into consideration and see if it might work out.

How will I get to Las Vegas if I'm not already living there?

If you don't already live in Las Vegas, we'll discuss your availability to start and options for your travel to the city. While some people would fly out, many of our guides drive their own vehicles. We don't provide for your transportation here, however, if you do have your own vehicle we may allow for a certain number of staff to park at our facility during tours. Obviously, Las Vegas is a big city, so parking anywhere in the city would be at your own risk and our insurance does not provide protection for any theft of personal items, vehicles, etc., so it is important to come to the job with a minimalist mindset, so as to keep from having to leave any personal items of value in your vehicles.

What's the best part of this job?

Are you ready to explore and share some of the most amazing destinations our country has to offer?

We could go on and on with comments we get from our current and past guides and crew. That answer will be different for everyone who works with us. However, the most common themes we hear have to do with the freedom people feel when they're out there on the road, living for the moment. The fact that you receive some of the most positive feedback you can imagine on almost a daily basis from guests is also a very unique experience for many jobs out there. We're not saying it's always rainbows and sunshine, but when it is, it's a hard feeling to beat!

A great day spent traveling to local wineries in a large very comfortable, well appointed van. Fancy, entertaining interior light show and great music playing on the sound system the entire trip. All details were taken care of so that our arrival was met with professionalism and the ultimate preparedness. Staff at the winery treated our group as if they were welcoming royalty. Give your group the gift of fun, convenience, and safety by traveling with Cork and Keg. Owners Nick and Julie Kendall will insure that you'll be glad that you did!!!

What an amazing time! My husband and I and another couple did a tour of few spots in Middleburg. The company is run by Renee and Don who are the perfect dynamic duo and showed us a great time. We enjoyed their party van which was very clean and had great music playlists, karaoke, lights. We didn't do it but you can even submit photos to create a slideshow for a special occasion. Renee arranged for us to have a personalised charcuterie from the Cornichon which was incredible, was the best at taking pictures of us so we could capture the memories, and was constantly saving us time at each location because tables were reserved for us. I would recommend this to everyone and anyone

Absolutely loved having the chance to participate in a virtual wine tour with this company. I learned so much about wine and proper glassware that I'm now determined to restock my bar. The owner is a lot of fun and I hope to have a chance to do an in person tour once the global pandemic is over. Thank you for hosting us and allowing us to experience a little bit of a "wine-down" with you!

Wow, thank you so much Angie! It was such a pleasure meeting you and your friends and giving you the VIP treatment across Loudoun wine country! Looking forward to you all coming back again, I have another 42 wineries to get you to! Cheers and keep that loyalty card handy! ~Renee

We had an outstanding outing with Cork and Keg tours this past Sunday. Renee and Don were excellent host, there vehicle is amazing and their organization was top notch. Every brewery we went to had reserved spaces for us, our drink and food orders were handled through them and paying the bill was very easy as they just give us the total for the day at the end of the trip. There are plently of limo/bus services out there that can get you around to different breweries/wineries but the passion Renee and Don bring to their tours cannot be replicated and really sets them apart. I hope to enjoy their company several more times in the future. Thank You for a wonderful experience, Lovettsville Oktoberfest

Job of Moscow

Our father among the saints Job ( + 1607) was the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He is commemorated by the Church on June 19 and April 5 .

  • 1 Early life
  • 3 Patriarchate
  • 6 External link

St Job was born into the family of pious tradesmen in Staritsa near Tver in the 1530s. His baptismal name was John. As a teenager, John knew most of the biblical texts by heart and strove to become a monk . His father, however, insisted on his marriage . Once, John asked his father's permission to see his confessor in the Uspensky Monastery in their native town of Staritsa (Tver Oblast). Upon his arrival, John immediately took monastic vows and assumed the name of Job. He spent fifteen years in the cloister and finally became its abbot in 1566 with the help of Ivan the Terrible , who had made Staritsa his residence in times of the Oprichnina (secret police).

In 1571, Job was transferred to Moscow and appointed abbot of the Simonov Monastery . In 1575, he became the abbot of the Novospassky Monastery. In 1581, Job was appointed bishop of Kolomna.

Known as a person of mediocre mental abilities, he, nevertheless, managed to draw attention of Boris Godunov by his talent for reading the longest of prayers by heart in a very expressive manner. During the reign of Feodor I (whose government was controlled by Boris Godunov), Job was appointed archbishop of Rostov and Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia in 1587.

Realizing the necessity of strengthening the ecclesiastic authority in Russia , Godunov managed to persuade the Patriarch of Constantinople Jeremias II to establish a patriarchate in Russia. On January 26 , 1589, Job was elected the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He exercised all his influence and played a major part in Boris Godunov's ascending to the Russian throne.

Patriarchate

Job did not approve, however, Godunov's proposal to open a university in Moscow with foreign professors because he believed their influence and non- Orthodox faith would cause "heterodoxy" and endanger the authority of the Russian Church. Under Job's supervision, the Russians corrected books for divine service and prepared them for publishing.

He assisted in glorification of some of the Russian saints , ordering the celebration of the memory of Basil Fool for Christ in 1588, as well as that of Joseph Volotsky and others. Job also favored the construction of new cathedrals and monasteries and Christian missionary activities in the recently conquered Astrakhan Khanate and Siberia. After the mysterious death of tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich in 1591, Jove accepted the noncriminal version of his demise, supporting Boris Godunov every step of the way.

After the invasion of False Dmitriy I and sudden death of Boris Godunov on June 1 , 1605, there was an uprising in Moscow.

Job was known as a harsh critic of False Dmitriy I, and he tried to persuade the people of Moscow to remain loyal to the deceased tsar. The armed supporters of the impostor burst into the Cathedral of the Dormition, and a boyar named P.F. Basmanov declared Job a traitor. Job was sent into exile to his monastery in Staritsa, where he went completely blind and finally died a very sick man in 1607.

In 1652, Job's relics were transferred to the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Moscow Kremlin, where they remain to this day. Patriarch Job was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1989.

WEATHER ALERT

A flood watch in effect for 15 regions in the area

Us job openings fall to 8.5 million in march, the lowest level in more than 3 years.

Paul Wiseman

Associated Press

WASHINGTON – U.S. jobs openings slid in March to the lowest level in more than three years, but stayed at historically high levels in a sign that the job market remains resilient in the face of higher interest rates.

The Labor Department reported Wednesday that employers posted 8.5 million vacancies in March, down from 8.8 million in February and the fewest since February 2021.

Recommended Videos

The number of Americans quitting their jobs fell to the lowest level since January 2021 — a sign of diminishing confidence in their ability to find something better. But layoffs fell.

Monthly job openings are down sharply from a peak of 12.2 million in March 2022 but remain at a high level. Before 2021, they'd never exceeded 8 million — a threshold they have now reached for 37 straight months.

The high level of job openings reflects a surprisingly strong U.S. labor market. When the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in March 2022 to combat a resurgence in inflation, the higher borrowing costs were expected to tip the economy into recession and push up unemployment.

Instead, even as the Fed raised its benchmark rate 11 times, the economy kept growing, companies kept hiring and unemployment stayed low, coming in under 4% for 26 straight months — longest such streak since the 1960s. Employers have added a healthy average of 276,000 jobs a month this year — up from last year's 251,000 — and Friday's April jobs report is expected to show they tacked on another 230,000 last month, down but still solid, according to a survey of forecasters by the data firm FactSet.

Inflation eased, too — decelerating from a four-decade high 9.1% in June 2022 to 3.5% in March. The combination of falling inflation and enduring economic strength has raised hopes the Fed can manage a so-called soft landing —slowing the economy enough to tame inflation without causing a recession. Some economists have suggested there need be no landing at all: The economy can keep growing steadily as inflation comes down.

But progress on inflation has lately stalled. On a month-to-month basis, consumer price increases haven't fallen since October. And on a year-over-year basis, they remain well above the Fed's 2% target.

The Fed had signaled that it expects to reverse course and cut rates three times this year. But, given the disappointing inflation numbers, the central bank appears to be in no hurry to start: It's expected to leave rates alone at its meeting Wednesday.

Jeremy Clarkson fans drive councillor to quit job over ‘death threats’

Jeremy Clarkson.

A councillor who was locked in loggerheads with Jeremy Clarkson over his Diddly Squat farm has quit after being bombarded with ‘death threats’ by Clarkson’s Farm fans.

The former Top Gear star, 63, has been followed by cameras over the past few years after he decided to try his hand at farming after purchasing land in the Cotswolds.

However, in more recent times he’s come to blows with his local council, who have knocked back proposals for more parking and establishing a restaurant on site .

But now a councillor for West Oxfordshire District Council, who represents the area in which Jeremy’s farm is based in Chipping Norton, has stepped down after furious Clarkson’s Farm fans began targeting him.

Dean Temple, 46, was the sole representative for the Chadlington and Churchill ward and had opposed several of Clarkson’s plans, such as his proposition to set up a restaurant where he wanted to plate up local produce.

He has now left his position, admitting doing so was ‘one hundred per cent’ influenced by the abuse from disgruntled TV viewers.

Jeremy Clarkson.

Cllr Temple told The Daily Star then when he made the decision to stand for the role, he was told the ward was ‘a nice quiet place where nothing ever happens’, however that quickly changed after the planning rows with Clarkson.

‘All of a sudden I was getting calls, death threats and from all over the world,’ he said.

He is now standing down and seeking election in nearby Witney.

Dean Temple one of the local councillors who Jeremy Clarkson has been butting heads with for years.

Last year he told the Oxford Mail that he had an inbox that ‘can only be described as a cesspit’.

‘I’ve had abuse from all over the world. On the messages I have received I have tended to ignore those that are aggressive, nasty or contain outright allegations of “corruption”, “backhanders” and “you just don’t like him”.

‘Those that have asked genuine questions I have tried to engage with and offer my own point of view while explaining the finer points of planning law.’

However, he did not blame Clarkson for being targeted by disgruntled Clarkson’s Farm fans.

He instead said he believed the TV star had behaved ‘in a very fair and honest way’ and had not used his ‘influence’ to make life difficult for councillors.

‘Sadly, some of his fans haven’t followed his example which is not his fault,’ he added.

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.
