Dan Auerbach shares the 'magic trick we learned at 16' that keeps The Black Keys going

black keys wild child tour

The Black Keys have released two albums since the last time they played Phoenix in 2019.

And to hear Dan Auerbach describe the thrill he gets just being in the studio with drummer Patrick Carney after 20 years, you get the sense that he'd be every bit as happy to have just kept making records while the amps were warm.

"We're both just totally addicted to recording even now," he says. "I don't know what it is. But we get such a high off getting in there and creating something out of nothing, pulling songs out of thin air. It's like this magic trick we learned to do when we were 16 and we never stopped. We never got tired of the trick."

The Black Keys reclaim their hill country roots with 'Delta Kream'

The first of those two albums, last year's "Delta Kream," is the sound of The Black Keys reclaiming their roots in the hill country blues they cut their teeth on in Akron, Ohio, covering R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Mississippi Fred McDowell and more.

They didn't have much time to overthink the song selection, having tracked it in a single day on what Auerbach says was a whim.

He'd just finished producing an album in his Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound, for Louisiana bluesman Robert Finley with bassist Kenny Brown and lead guitarist Eric Deaton.

"It was the first time I had ever worked with Kenny," Auerbach says. "And just hearing his playing reminded me of those records I loved so much like 'Too Bad Jim' by R.L. Burnside and 'Sad Days and Lonely Nights' by Junior Kimbrough."

Those are records he and Carney listened to "over and over again" while crisscrossing the country in a minivan. So he got Carney on the phone and asked if he was free the next day to record with Brown and Deaton.

"I knew that he would get a kick out of it," Auerbach recalls.

"So he came over and we cut the record in a day. Then we just sat on it for a few months, didn't even listen to it."

A year and a half later, they released the songs in all their ragged, unkempt glory.

"We didn't touch it at all," the guitarist producer recalls.

"It's just a completely raw improvisation. We'd never played with a bassist before. We'd never played with Kenny Brown. We've never played with a percussionist. So it was all these new things."

They'd played those old familiar songs before, but not since they were starting out.

"It's music we'd obsessed over when we were younger," Auerbach says. "And it was very good for us. Reset our mainframes. And I think we were a little bit more comfortable to record extra raw and leave that gnarly first take on the record, which is what we did on 'Dropout Boogie.' Three or four songs are complete first takes."

Duane Eddy interview: How his road to the Hall of Fame started in a Phoenix junkyard

On 'Wild Child': 'We knew it was special'

Other songs on their latest release required more finesse.

"Some of the songs are a little more pop-minded, thinking about it in terms of, 'How do we make something catchy?'" he says. "We wanted to have some of those on the record. We also wanted to have some very raw improvisations. And I think we got a healthy mixture."

They also got a hit. "Wild Child," the first single released from "Dropout Boogie," topped Billboard's Rock and Alternative Airplay charts in May.

"As soon as we cut the instrumental, we knew it was special," Auerbach recalls.

"We had the chorus really quickly. And the instrumental was just jumping out of the speakers. So we took a little extra time. And we called in a couple friends to help us write. That was really the difference maker."

Being open to outside perspectives is something they picked up from working with Danger Mouse on a string of hit albums, from their 2008 mainstream breakthrough, "Attack & Release" through "Brothers," "El Camino" and 2014's "Turn Blue."

It also doesn't hurt that Carney nails the groove while also allowing the record to breathe.

"Pat's just a crazy good drummer," Auerbach says. "He's able to play real loose. He's also able to play super rock 'n' roll. And he's also able to play very dancey. I think the older he gets, the more confident he gets in his drumming. He's one of the best drummers I've ever played with."

Then, Billy Gibbons showed up with a bottle of wine ... and no guitar

"Dropout Boogie" also features ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons on a track called "Good Love."

Surprisingly, given his age, 46, and his love of the blues, Auerbach came late to ZZ Top.

"I don't think either Pat or I really knew too much about ZZ Top, to be honest," Auerbach says. "I think we grew up knowing them as the guys from the music videos, 'Cheap Sunglasses' and stuff like that. My dad did not listen to ZZ Top. And so I wasn't really aware of their first couple albums or first records. I had never heard them."

The Black Keys were already touring by the time they   got turned on to early ZZ Top.

"And it just really blew my mind," he says. "I didn't realize what an amazing drummer Frank Beard was, how great they were singing together, how catchy their songs were but how raw everything was. So it was really cool to hear."

He came away from that exposure feeling he'd discovered kindred spirits.

"I could hear what records Billy was copping on guitar and stuff like that, because I'd been obsessing over those blues records when I was young, and hearing their spin on that was really cool," Auerbach says. "I felt like we were definitely drinking from the same well."

Over the years, they became friends.

"I heard Billy was in town," Auerbach says. "He comes to Nashville often. So I texted him. I said, 'Me and Pat are in the studio jamming. Why don't you stop by if you get a free minute?' I didn't hear from him for hours, and then all of a sudden, I got a text. He said, 'I'm coming over, hombre.'"

Gibbons showed up with a bottle of wine and no guitar.

"I handed him a guitar and plugged it straight into an amp, no pedals, nothing," Auerbach recalls.

"Just turned the amp all the way up, poured him a glass of wine and we commenced to jamming for about an hour and a half. I think we came up with three or four song ideas. And one of those was 'Good Love.' That was just all improvising."

Why there's no major concerts at Arizona State Fair:   And what to expect in 2023

Why The Black Keys are still going strong

It's been 12 years since "Tighten Up" became their first No. 1 on the Rock and Alternative charts. The fact that they can still be counted on to rock those charts all these years later is an impressive feat not lost on Auerbach.

"I mean, it's definitely a testament to how much we toured, building our fan base, and how amazing our fans are," he says.

"But we also put in the work. I think there's something to that. We were always willing to just do crazy (expletive) to try to succeed in this business, like driving 9,10,11,12 hours every single day for months for years. And every year, life got a little bit better.

'Like magic, sort of':  Dan Auerbach reflects on chemistry he has with Patrick Carney

"Dropout Boogie" hit the streets in May, one day shy of the 20th anniversary of The Black Keys' debut, "The Big Come Up," an album he   loves as much as ever.

"We learned how to play music together, how to record together, how to write songs together," he says. "Every time I hear our records, I hear us learning and growing. I know where our heads were and stuff like that. It's pretty interesting. I hear a record like that and I can hear the basement. The cinderblock walls."

He says it feels good to still be out there making music and touring arenas with The Black Keys after all these years. "It's just been a true blessing."

"I get to play music with my best friend from high school. And The Black Keys has allowed me to live a dream, to afford to have a studio and make records and run a record label. And I don't have to just think about hits. I can just work with people I really love and respect no matter what I think they're gonna be selling. I don't take it for granted, that's for sure."

The Black Keys Announce A New Album, ‘Dropout Boogie,’ And Share The Lead Single, ‘Wild Child’

Adrian Spinelli

20 years after their debut album dropped, The Black Keys will be releasing their 11th studio album, Dropout Boogie. Arriving on May 13th, the new album was recorded at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Studios in Nashville.

The new album features collaborations with ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright of Reigning Sound, and Angelo Petraglia of Kings Of Leon. Cartwright and Petraglia both appear on new single “Wild Child,” which hearkens back to the Midwest blues rock tinged with soul that the duo have ridden to the tune of five Grammy Awards and multiple Platinum records.

“I knew Pat would love working with both of these guys, so we decided we’d give it a shot,” Auerbach added. “It was the first time we’d ever really done that. It was fun as hell. We just sat around a table with acoustic guitars and worked out a song ahead of time.”

Cartwright’s vocals sit slickly alongside Auerbach’s on the hook and the song feels like it’s right out of a roadside blues rock get-down. “The cool thing with Greg is that he wants to approach stuff with a story in mind — there’s a plot, almost,” Carney said.

The Nashville sound has suited the two kids from Akron well. Auerbach has been busy at the locale as of late, producing albums for artists on his label like Yola, Aaron Frazer, and Shannon Shaw. While Carney has been busy in Nashville himself, bringing his Audio Eagle studio on the road, and producing for artists like Tennis and Michelle Branch. “Living in Nashville and making records here has opened both of our minds to that experience a little bit more,” Auerbach said in a statement.

The band have also announced their first tour in three years. There’s 32 tour dates throughout North America beginning in Las Vegas on July 9th and ending in Dallas on October 18th.

Black Keys Reconnect to Blue Collar Roots in ‘Wild Child’ Video, Announce New Album

Did the Black Keys just give up a lucrative music career just to take jobs as high school janitor and cook? Nah, but that's the premise of their new video for "Wild Child," as the duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney attempt to "reconnect to their blue collar roots" by doing some hard time amongst the youth of today. "Wild Child" also marks the first taste of music we're getting from their next studio album, Dropout Boogie .

The Bryan Schlam-directed video finds the musicians initially turning up in the teachers lounge at a school, getting roasted by the burned out educators. But this ruse is all just part of a larger plan for the musical duo. "We're gonna reconnect with our blue collar roots then we're out," says Carney, before Auerbach assures, "For ... the ... album."

It doesn't take that long for the day to turn nightmarish for the pair, who eventually turn in their resignation, doff their work clothes for tuxes and leave the kiddies behind (with middle fingers extended) as they ride off in their luxury vehicles.

The humorous video is soundtracked by the swagger-filled new song "Wild Child," and there is actually some connection to the exaggerated video storyline for the band and the pair have recently reconnected with their love of music over the last few records.

After taking a hiatus, the band returned in 2019 with Let's Rock ., but admittedly they didn't immediately feel they were back on track. “We had grown apart and we were reconnecting,” recalled Carney to Rolling Stone . “It was really good to get back into the studio, but we were still learning how to work with each other.”

Last year's Delta Kream covers album followed, with the duo once again starting to reclaim the mojo. “We recorded it in a day, no overdubs, and it’s one of my favorite records we’ve ever done,” says Auerbach of Delta Kream. “And that made us want to repeat the project, just getting in there and letting it roll and seeing whatever happens.”

“It ended up being a great reset of the band. It just showed us that the most important thing is that it’s fun,” said Carney.

So nearly immediately after Delta Kream arrived, the pair were back at it starting Dropout Boogie , which counts Reigning Sound's Greg Cartwright, Americana vocalist Sierra Farrell and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons among their collaborations.

“I feel Pat and I are in a better place than we’ve ever been,” says Auerbach, with Carney telling Rolling Stone, “This one, we thought deeply about what we were doing but we never struggled with anything. No big disagreements.”

"Pat and I always wanted this,” Auerbach adds. “We still have the same drive. We want to create something good. We’ve never lost that, I don’t think. It’s our favorite thing to do, this passion for making records.”

Dropout Boogie is due May 13 via Nonesuch Records. The full artwork and track listing can be seen below. Pre-orders are available here , while "Wild Child" is now available via multiple platforms here .

The band previously announced a summer tour in support of the album. Get dates and details here .

The Black Keys Announce New Album Dropout Boogie, Share “Wild Child”: Stream

The post The Black Keys Announce New Album Dropout Boogie, Share “Wild Child”: Stream appeared first on Consequence .

The Black Keys have a new album on the way. Dubbed Dropout Boogie, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney’s 11th full-length arrives May 13th via Nonesuch Records . As a preview, the band has shared the first single “Wild Child,” which you can listen to below.

In keeping with their love for spontaneity, The Black Keys wrote Dropout Boogie in the studio, and much of the project was recorded in a single take. “That’s always been the beauty of the thing Pat and I do. It’s instant,” Auerbach said in a statement. “We’ve never really had to work at it. Whenever we’d get together, we’d just make music, you know? We didn’t know what we were going to do, but we’d just do it and it would sound cool. It’s the natural chemistry Pat and I have. Being in a band this long is a testament to that. It was a real gift that we were given. I mean, the odds of being plopped down a block-and-a-half from each other in Akron, Ohio — it just seems crazy.”

One thing The Black Keys did differently this time around was inviting multiple outside contributors to work on the album. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Greg Cartwright, and Angelo Petraglia appear on Dropout Boogie, and on first single “Wild Child,” Auerbach and Carney teamed up with Cartwright and Petraglia to write the song before hitting the studio, lending a meticulous pop smoothness to the duo’s blues roots.

Auerbach discussed the process of writing “Wild Child” in a statement. “Living in Nashville and making records here has opened both of our minds to that experience a little bit more,” he said. “I knew Pat would love working with both of these guys, so we decided we’d give it a shot. It was the first time we’d ever really done that. It was fun as hell. We just sat around a table with acoustic guitars and worked out a song ahead of time.”

Check out the video for “Wild Child,” directed by longtime Black Keys collaborator Bryan Schlam, below. Pre-order Dropout Boogie here , and scroll onward for the album’s artwork and tracklist.

The LP follows The Black Keys’ 2021 record Delta Kream , a collection of covers of Mississippi Hill Country blues classics.

This summer, the duo will hit the road with Band of Horses for the “Dropout Boogie” North American tour ; grab your tickets via Ticketmaster .

Song of the Week: The Black Keys Bring the Electrified Funk With “Wild Child”

Song of the Week: The Black Keys Bring the Electrified Funk With “Wild Child”

Song of the Week  breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our  Spotify Top Songs  playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our  Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, The Black Keys remind us why they’re one of the most reliable rock bands in the world .

After last year’s love letter to Mississippi Hill Country Blues  Delta Kream , The Black Keys have returned with full force. This week, the Akron, Ohio duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have announced their eleventh studio album, Dropout Boogie , and shared the lead single, the thumping “Wild Child.”

Dropout Boog ie will be released on May 13th, a day before the 20th anniversary of their debut album The Big Come Up , and after forays into psychedelia and 1950s blues covers, it’s clear that The Black Keys are keen on returning to their working class, blues rock roots.

“Wild Child” is a driving, funk-influenced howler, with Auerbach’s expressive, commanding vocals taking the spotlight. The song oscillates primarily between only two chords, but The Black Keys populate each moment with energy, experience, and an untouchable air of cool. It’s a track that will undoubtedly make its way to the higher end of the rock and alternative charts — not because it fits well into the current sound of radio-centric sync, but because it also harkens back to their commercially successful heyday of their 2010 masterpiece Brothers  and 2011’s  El Camino.

And overall, “Wild Child” represents the fact that The Black Keys still have a great deal of gas left in the tank — their chemistry together is undeniable, and it’s their uncanny ability to create an incredibly cohesive sound and vision of the band seemingly out of nothing that will continue to sustain them throughout the decade.

At the end of the day, all Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney need to do is sit down and play. For The Black Keys, that will always be enough.

Fun Things for Kids in Moscow

Fun for kids in Moscow

What are the best things to do with children in Moscow?

  • Summer: Futuristic parks, river boats and ice caves are perfect attractions for when the temperatures rise above 30.
  • Museums: Russians are very proud of their history, which means that their museums are kept to a world-class standard. Both parents and children alike will be sure to learn something new at one of the many, often unique museums in Moscow.
  • Culture: From the world’s oldest puppet theatre to UNESCO-listed whimsical, wooden palaces there’ll be plenty to treat your little prince or princess to.
  • Winter: New Year is arguably the most magical time to visit Moscow, especially for children. The ice rinks throughout the city, Christmas markets and the magnificent ice-sculpture festival truly make Moscow a winter wonderland.

Moscow truly is a mega-metropolis like no other. Its non-stop energy and sheer unorthodoxy is sure to enthuse any child with its rebellious, east-meets-west spirit. Just walking down Old Arabat Street— where ancient wooden storehouses are squashed against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by blingy high-rises— is sure to appeal to the childish disdain of all things orderly and conventional. Apart from the main sites, there’s a whole host of family-friendly activities in Moscow from the very traditional to the uber, high-tech that will keep your kids entertained.

For Summer Scorchers:

Fun for kids - Summer VDNKh

Photo by  Jamie Taylor  on  Unsplash

VDNKh  is Russia’s version of Disneyland and, to be honest, we think it trumps that tacky theme park by a mile. First things first is its size. At almost 600 acres, this Soviet park has everything; from space museums to soviet shopping outlets to equestrian centers to beaches. In fact, there’s so much to do that there really is no way to cover it all in one day. Our favorite attractions include the ROBO station, the super-cool playgrounds near the aquarium and the world’s biggest ice rink in winter. Better rent out scooters or bikes as well if you plan on seeing at least a fraction of this green gem.

Address: Prospekt Mira, 119 Nearest metro station: VDNKh

Unlike VDNKh, you won’t have to travel far from the centre to seek the lovely lush lawns of  Gorky Park . Come early so that you can grab a beanbag or hammock for yourself while your children have some fun on the colorful playground rides or play ping-pong under the trees. At teatime, head over to the traditional Russian tea house for a brew from a giant samovar. It’s worth staying on for the whole day until dusk when the roof of the park’s planetarium slides open to reveal the wonders of the sky.

Address: Krymsky Val, 9 Nearest metro station:   Park Kultury

Zaradye Park

Moscow’s brand-new  Zaradye Park  couldn’t be more different from the stern, red brick of the Kremlin that towers over it. Whichever way you look, you’ll be rubbing your eyes to make sure that this other-worldly landscape of floating glass bridges, underground ancient walkways, Siberian tundra and ice caves really does exist. For children, this wild-urban project is the perfect place for them to let some steam off during a day of sightseeing. Thanks to the unbelievable glass-paneled roof that keeps warm air in and the rain out, the lawns are perfect for lounging on all year round.

Address: Varvarka street, 6 Nearest metro station:  Kitay-gorod

There’s a never-ending stream of tour boats bobbing up and down the Moskva River to hop on to when those little legs have had enough of walking. But for those who’d like something a little special, nothing beats the Radisson yacht. Champagne, on-board dining and floor to ceiling windows make it the most stylish way to cruise round Moscow.

Address: Naberezhnaya Tarasa Shevchenko, Moscow (next to teh Radisson Blue hotel) Nearest metro station:  Studencheskaya

For Little Einsteins:

Fun for kids - little einsteins

Museum of Cosmonauts

This is THE museum to go to if you happen to have a Star Wars fan with you. Unlike in countless planetariums around the world where gimmicky models of the solar system and dramatic movies make for a hollow experience, here you get the real thing. There’s a life-size model of the Russian space station, chunks of the moon, a space toilet, the actual Sputnik, heck, even Belka & Strelka, the space dogs, are there standing next to the very space shuttle they flew into space with  (never fear, they were stuffed only after they died of old age).  *For extreme fanatics, it’s worth noting you can arrange a tour to Star City, the astronaut training centre that is still in use outside of Moscow.

Address: Prospekt Mira, 111 Nearest metro station:   VDNKh, Vystavochny tsentr

Darwin Museum

The first museum in the world devoted to explaining the most important concept of biology definitely deserves a visit. Its menagerie of nearly half a million stuffed animals illustrate the steady process of evolution and the many now extinct animals it boasts like the Dodo serve as a warning bell for what the age of mass-industrialization might bring. Despite its name, the  Darwin museum isn’t at all quaint or old-fashioned with plenty of interactive displays and microscopes for children to engage with.

Address: Ulitsa Vavilova, 57 Nearest metro station:   Akademicheskaya

Orlov Museum of Paleontology

This museum could easily compete with the famed Natural History Museum in London. In fact, its extensive exhibit of ginormous skeletons from all sorts of beasts from sloths to diplodocuses might even be more impressive than London’s. After all, Russia is an awful lot bigger than England and probably has lot more giants slumbering away in the depths of its forests just waiting to be dug up!

Address: Ulitsa Profsoyuznaya, 123 Nearest metro station: Kon'kovo

The Experimentanium

There’s lots of fun to be had at this fully hands-on science museum. It’s absolutely perfect for little toddlers and mischievous boys alike because nothing’s off bounds—the whole place is a playground (with a lot of science snuck in!). And don’t worry, most of the descriptions are in English so they’ll definitely learn something along the way.

Address: Leningradsky prospekt, 80/11 Nearest metro station:   Sokol

For Boisterous Boys & Girls:

Fun for kids - Moscow city

Photo by  Alexandr Popadin  on  Unsplash

Moscow City

The second tallest, the third tallest, the fourth tallest and the sixth and seventh tallest buildings in Europe can all be found within a few meters of each other in the financial district, Moscow city. Apart from breaking their necks trying to gape at all the quirky high-rises, your kids can get a thrill by going up to the 54th floor of Ostankino TV Tower to its awe-inspiring panoramic viewing platform with a drop-down, glass floor!

Address:   Presnenskaya Naberezhnaya Nearest metro station:   Delovoy tsentr, Mezhdunarodnaya, Vystavochnaya

A trip down to this veritable villain’s lair is certainly worth it with children, not least because it’s 18 stories underground…. AND the only way back up is by the stairs making it the perfect recipe for a peaceful afternoon. Apart from tiring out children, Bunker 42 has the distinction of being a genuine nuclear bunker. It was intended to be the hide-away of the USSR’s top dogs in the case of nuclear war and the staff here do such an excellent job of recreating the tense atmosphere that we hazard against taking softer children here. Everything, from the actual computer with the big red button which would have been used to start WW3 to the KGB’s rooms, have been preserved exactly as they were at the height of the cold war.

*Entrance only with group tours which can be arranged in English.

Address: 5th Kotel'nicheskiy Pereulok, 11 Nearest metro station:  Taganskaya

Central Armed Forces Museum

Though there isn’t much English in this museum dedicated to all things sickle and hammer (i.e. the Red Army), the genuine American U2 spy plane it has on show and the opportunity to hold real (but thankfully, not loaded!) guns make it a real treasure trove for army-mad kids.

Address: Ulitsa Sovetskoy Armii, 2 Nearest metro station:  Dostoevskaya

Victory Museum

You don’t actually need to step a foot in this museum dedicated entirely to WW2 to please your wannabe soldiers. Just sit down on a bench as your kids jump on and off the airplanes, tanks, armored vehicles and every other killing machine imaginable that are free to explore outside this museum.

Address: Ploshchad' Pobedy, 3 Nearest metro station:   Park Pobedy

Armory Chamber

Part of the Kremlin complex, the Armory Chamber’s incredibly diverse displays—spanning folk art to silverware to coronation dresses— cover almost every era of Russia’s royal history. The wedding carriages and ceremonial arms are particularly well-loved by children.

Address: The Moscow Kremlin Nearest metro station:  Biblioteka imeni Lenina

For Little Princes & Princesses:

Fun for kids - Puppet theater

Photo by  Ralph Lindner  from  Pixabay

Moscow State Puppet Theatre

The oldest puppet theatre in Moscow is also the largest in the world. Its wide-ranging repertoire has shows for tiny tots up to adult-only shows. Its fairytale clock, from which mythical creatures spring out, will be the cherry on top of a magical visit to this dear theatre.

Address: Pestovskiy Pereulok, 2/1 Nearest metro station:   Marksistskaya

Central Kids Store on Lubyanka

This seven-story department store devoted entirely to little people boasts the biggest Hamleys in the world, the biggest time keeping mechanism and one of the best viewing platforms in Moscow. In other words, it’s kiddy heaven. The building itself is also rather noteworthy, dating back to 1953. Its stained murals and colorful tiles give it an old-world (soviet) charm.

Address: Teatral'nyy Proyezd, 5 Nearest metro station:   Lubyanka, Kuznetsky Most

Izmailovsky Park

This is possibly the world’s only Slavic theme park. Just joking, but just be warned this recreated Russian village with mini-museums, bakeries and a market is a teensy bit kitsch. If your children are artsy, then why not let them make their own matryoshka at a masterclass instead of buying one at the market. And while the kiddies busy themselves with the business of covering every square inch of their clothes in paint, there’s plenty for parents to peruse; like the vodka museum or the pleasantly, rolling park land.

Address: Alleya Bol'shogo Kruga, 7 Nearest metro station:  Sokolinaya gora

Kolomenskoye Park

Ivan the Terrible’s summer retreat isn’t at all as gloomy as you’d expect, indeed some might say it’s actually a bit too colorful. In our opinion, its postcard-perfect; with petite trains chugging through the acres of apple orchards, a pearl-white 16th century, UNESCO-listed church and a magnificently vibrant, 300 year old wooden palace. Take your children on a trip back in time, they’ll be delighted - we promise.

Address: Andropova Ave, 39 Nearest metro station:  Kolomenskaya

For Petrol Heads:

Fun for kids - rail museum

Photo by  Dimitris Vetsikas  from  Pixabay

Moscow Rizhsky Railway Station

If you don’t have time to take your children on the Trans-Siberian, then a ride on a Soviet steam train is a superb alternative. The beauty of chugging through the outskirts of Moscow on a train with a red star on its gleaming, coal-black engine will definitely make Harry Potter fans squeal with excitement. Adults will appreciate the cups of tea served in old-style soviet mugs specifically made for train journeys. If you’d like to explore the rail museum after the trip (we highly recommend it), be prepared for the weather as the whole exhibition is uncovered.

Address:  Rizhskaya Ploshad, 1 Nearest metro station:  Rizhskaya

Moscow Metro Museum

After taking your children on the Moscow metro (which you simply must!), chances are they’ll bombard you with all sorts of questions a parent isn’t equipped to answer; like “How fast do the trains go?” and “Who drives them?”. Never fear, Moscow’s metro actually has a free museum which will answer all these questions, as well as even allowing kids to take a seat in the driver’s seat for a virtual ride down the tunnels.

Address: Presnenskaya Naberezhnaya, 2 Nearest metro station:   Vystavochnaya

For White Winter Days:

Fun for kids - White Winter days

Moscow Ice Festival

Each winter in Park Pobedy, blocks of ice are towed in from Russia’s great lakes to be chiseled away into masterpieces. Children will be delighted to find that they can even clamber upon some of these unbelievably big artworks. But the favorite by far, are super slippery ice slides.

*Just beware of wet bums— waterproofs are a must.

Learn more about winter activities is Moscow .

Address: Park Pobedy on Poklonnaya Hill Nearest metro station:   Park Pobedy

Ice-skating

There are almost 1500 ice-skating rinks in Moscow alone. It’s almost as if every open plot of land has water poured over it; even Red Square is transformed into a mega rink! The park VDNKh boasts the biggest in the world, but there’s also an awesome rooftop ice rink at ArtPlay. Wherever you take your children, you can’t go wrong with a bit of skating.
