Robert Pickering Burnham (born August 21st, 1990), better known simply as Bo Burnham, is an American comedian, singer and songwriter. He hails from Hamilton, Massachusetts.

Burnham is one of the success stories of the YouTube generation, having uploaded a couple of comedic songs about teenage angst to the website in 2006. Originally, they went practically unnoticed, but became sensationally popular once they were shared on the then-popular website Break.com; so much so, in fact, that YouTube itself - then relatively fledgling by way of comparison the staple of the internet that it is today - struggled to cope with the incredibly sharp overnight upturn in traffic. Burnham continued to upload content alongside his university studies, but was eventually forced to put the latter on hold in 2008 when his career within the media made it impossible to juggle the two.

Since then, his status as both a comedian and a musician has continued to grow steadily; as far as the latter interest is concerned, he’s released three comedy album - a self-titled effort in 2009, the follow-up ‘Words Words Words’ in 2010 and his latest, ‘what.’ in 2013, which tied in with a stand-up video special that made it to Netflix. ‘Words Words Words’ kept the music and the stand-up on separate discs, but the other records have blended them - Burnham’s ability to incorporate both styles is fast becoming his signature.

Live reviews

Bo Burnham’s is one of the funniest and most original comedians to have entered the comedy scene in a while. Although he performs standup, most of his material consists of comedic songs, which often encompasses taboo subjects such as race, gender, and religion.

Bo Burnham started his career as an internet sensation by posting his songs on youtube, which soon went viral after his post. Since then he has perfected his craft touring across the world and participating in many prestigious comedy festivals such as Montreal Just For Laughs. He also appeared on Comedy Central Presents in 2009 making him the youngest person to have performed on the show. His songs are often sung in a very fast manner, packing in jokes at rapid speed. The jokes in the songs often use puns and are heavily based on wordplay. Perhaps the reason why Bo Burnham is so funny is because of the authenticity of the material. Bo Burnham’s material is never presented in a macho way, but he relies on his self-deprecatory style of delivery to make his jokes stand out.

Bo Burnham often purposefully develops a pretentious, snooty stage persona in order to divide himself from his comedy. Some of his more recent shows have incorporated more abstract and unconventional methods of performing such as using pre-recorded material of himself, which engages him when he is on stage. Since Bo Burnham comes from a theatrical background it is of no surprise that he incorporates a more physical and scripted aspect to his performance.

When attending a Bo Burnham performance you can expect a little bit of everything that has made him such a well-respected comedian. He will perform jokes using the more traditional format of stand-up delivery, he will engage you in some of his hilarious songs, and he will present comedy in a more abstract theatrical performance.

Bo Burnham has once again managed to create an amazing and unforgettable show! I laughed harder than I have in a long time and I enjoyed the show more than any other I have been to. Bo has absolutely earned my respect and adoration as a comic and social critic who has a unique view of the world and society. He is not afraid to tackle social issues, the flaws in pop culture, and the pressure and expectations placed on him in a way that is accessible and makes you think while still providing a show that never fails to make you laugh. It is rare to find someone who is as witty, intelligent, and funny as he is that haves you leaving the show happy but also thinking about the deeper issues he talked about and the meanings of what he has said. It is an experience that you cannot get anywhere else and some of the things he has said have given me a completely new outlook on issues in life. Bo never ceases to amaze and I absolutely look forward to seeing his show again as soon as possible. I would absolutely say that the show was perfect.

His personality and genius shine through at his live shows. Watching his specials, he's seems calculated and has the elegance of someone way beyond his years. But at his live show, I sort of realized that he doesn't have any idea what he's doing -- in the best way. At some points I realized I was just watching an absurdly talented kid doing things that he thought were funny in an unapologetic way. He's a genuine artist, and his live show felt like a concert and a standup show and a performance art piece all mixed into one. It was very, very funny!

This show was amazing! It was a small theater, so the show had a great, personal feel. There was a little heckling, but Bo took it in great stride and actually used those moments and others involving the audience to create even more humor.

The sound was great, but at certain times, the music did drown out the vocals a little bit. It's to be expected in such a small theater, but was otherwise superb. The lights were spectacular, and the cues were perfectly executed.

Overall, the show was amazing. I would definitely go again!

The show was amazing! It was the best concert thing I've ever been to! Shouting out "I love you Bo!" And him replying "no you don't." Was pretty funny! I wasn't ex him to be so tall! He even dissed missouri by saying we stole barbecue (we all groaned so loud it made him laugh and he said that was the loudest groan he's got all tour!)! He also had us crack our knuckles at the same time! The sound was disgusting but awesome at the same time! It was a blast and couldn't ha been better!

The concert itself was great! Great set with some amazing new material :D I especially liked his "country song" and the one about finding true love. The only issue was it being all-ages and there being some reaaaaally rowdy young people at the venue. They were so loud that there were even times where Bo had stopped the show and even one of his songs because of people yelling out. He was cool about it though and handled it well. A real class-act. I would definitely watch him again.

I usually never write reviews for anyone, but Bo deserved one. This was hands down the best show I've ever been to, and everything that he said influenced me immensely. The experience was surreal, and Bo was able to find a healthy medium between comedy and introspection. I commend him on everything he did, and I hope with all of my might he returns to Las Vegas again.

10/10 Bo Burnham is a genius and has an incredible amount of talent! I cried from laughing so hard. The opener was really funny too! I was in the front row and there was a time when all I could see was light then Bo came out of that light. Pretty sure he's God.

Bo was hilarious and amazing as always! I will definitely go to see him next time he's in Milwaukee. The show wasn't complete, but he made up for it by playing some of his hits that the whole house knew and with some witty banter with the audience.

Bo Burnham’s Inside Is Getting Theatrical Run (That Just Got Extended by Three Days)

(via Deadline )

Without a doubt, one of the most talked about comedy specials of 2021 is  Bo Burnham’s Inside . Cinematic and timely, it’s without a doubt one of the best comedy specials to be made during the pandemic and further proof that great artists can figure out how to make powerful, moving works of art despite the constraints of a worldwide pandemic.

Originally, Netflix was planning an exclusive one night only screening of  Inside , but demand for seeing one of the most epic looking specials (despite it being almost entirely shot in one room) on the big screen has prompted the streaming giant to make it into a whole run for next weekend Jul. 22nd-25th at hundreds of theaters across North America.

It’s very rare for comedy specials to ever find their way into theaters and, as far as we can even remember, the last few specials to even make an attempt at a theatrical run over the last few years might all be just from Kevin Hart.

In any case, this is a great excuse to go watch Bo Burnham’s Inside yet again.

Bo Burnham Rises to the Challenge of Making a Pandemic Era Comedy Special with “Inside”

At the beginning of lockdown, the live in-person element of comedy that is so vital to the art form disappeared leaving no clue as to when or if it would ever come back. Immediately, the absurdist questioning of what live comedy could even be without it had to not only be entertained, but faced and dealt with by every comedic performer everywhere in the world.

Many comedians took to Zoom, IG Live, Twitch, drive-in theaters/pop-ups, etc. to try and salvage/reimagine what the form could be to several varying degrees of success. There was undoubtedly a feeling that live comedy had to figure out what it would do in 2035 right on the spot of March/April 2020. Despite the misanthropic and existential protestations of comedians declaring that “comedy is dead”, live comedy lived on through trailblazers, pioneers, and the super clever.

Bo Burnham encapsulates all three of those distinctions.

He reaffirmed that with his latest comedy special, Inside . Off the top, it’s a staggeringly magnificent work just from how it has an undeniably epic expanse both in aesthetic and content while all coming from Bo’s mind and his physical limitations as the sole person on the production to going through a Campbell-esque hero’s journey all within a single room.

The irony of Bo’s humble beginnings of doing a bunch of songs by himself in a room over several months and then returning to them, albeit with a cinematic scope and a global pandemic and reckoning at hand, isn’t lost on us. Perhaps, that’s an overarching, thematic bit in of itself? If anything, the evolution of Bo’s journey as a comedian, a content creator, a director, and, most importantly, as a person all coalesce here in what is such a thoroughly human meditation on what 2020/2021 has been like through Bo’s lens of super clever songs, transitions, and gorgeous lighting.

Bo’s collection of tunes and asides cover so many facets of what we all went through last year. He goes from a personal level in regards to his own anxiety and depression to the global anxieties of what COVID-19 hath wrought and the shaking of the world’s soul in regards to its systemic problems regarding race, precarity, and the unprecedented levels of isolation. There’s a rawness and vulnerability that comes with Inside  too, both literally and figuratively, with moments of very personal confessions of his mental state and in a shaggy Bo dancing and posing in just his underwear.

Bo Burnham’s Inside is very much what a comedy special as a performance art exhibit in art museum could be at it’s very best and we deeply love it for that.

We know you’re sick of being inside, but please do watch this as Bo Burnham: Inside is streaming on Netflix right now right here .

Bo Burnham Is Coming Out With His Own DIY Special, Made During COVID-19

When it comes to conceptual comedy, especially when it comes to doing it in a comedy special, Bo Burnham is one of the most imaginative and skilled comedians around today in that regard. what. still stands, even now, as one of the more innovative works of comedy in the entire history of comedy.

So, with the obvious challenges that the COVID-19 has presented with people having to be distanced and masked and gathering, especially in the way that live comedy is traditionally presented, Burnham, we think, could probably dream something up that would work.

Thus, he is just wrapping up such a special called Inside that he made entirely by himself without a crew or audience (as opposed to most other comedy specials that have been made in this time including Sam Morrill, Nate Bargatze, Colin Quinn, Tiffany Haddish’s They Ready ). There’s a bit of a teaser that reveals Bo solo at a piano in a real dramatic light, but nothing much else.

Burnham’s last special was in 2016, so this small tidbit is more than enough to look forward to seeing billboards around town leading up to, possibly, another trailer, to, eventually, the release of the special (which will be a date TBD). Also, it will be his the first special since Eighth Grade , directing Chris Rock’s Tamborine , and his great role in the Oscar nominated A Promising Young Woman , and that wondering where Bo’s creativity is now even makes Inside even more enticing.

hi. i made a new special. it was filmed by me, alone, without a crew or an audience, over the course of the past year. it is almost finished. i hope you like it. pic.twitter.com/5a59IUrzVj — Bo Burnham (@boburnham) April 28, 2021

Bo Burnham Will Write Songs for Jonathan Krisel’s Sesame Street Movie at Warner Bros.

Though Bo Burnham is on a trajectory of being an auteur from directing comedy specials and Eighth Grade , going away from his past of doing meticulously crafted songs, it would seem that the allure of the latest Sesame Street feature film adaption proved too strong.

It’s definitely an intriguing wrinkle to this Sesame Street movie, especially when you have Jonathan Krisel , whose work you know from Portlandia and Baskets , attached as director.

So, possibly, we could be getting a very cinematic, very meta Sesame Street movie coming soon to theaters?

Bo Burnham and A24 Are Having Free Screenings of Eighth Grade So Kids In and Around Eighth Grade Can Go See It

image

Bo Burnham , writer and director of the fantastic Eighth Grade , has  lamented that the film’s R-rating has made it difficult for kids to see it and is thus having the film screened for free for one special engagement this Wednesday, August 8th in all 50 states so that everyone of all ages can go see it (especially the kids of the age that the movie is about).

Get more details on showtimes and locations here . Know that you ought to show up early to make sure you get tickets and get in.

Oh yeah, in case you weren’t aware, Eighth Grade is playing nationwide and is, without a doubt, one of the best movies of the year . Please go see it at a theater whenever you can.

Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade Is Hands Down One of the Best Coming of Age Movies of the Year

image

Bo Burnham continues to dazzle us all with his multitudes and multitudes of talent, skill, and precision even as he now takes his creativity behind the scenes these days.

His feature film debut Eighth Grade  is further evidence of that claim and a fantastic and hysterical portrait of adolescence in 2018. The advent of social media, mass shootings, and a lost generation of parenting all raise the bar on what it’s like to be alienated as a kid right now. Burnham captures all of that in the most cinematic way possible even if the moments are rather small and nuanced in the grand scheme of life. Elsie Fisher has a star making performance with how true every stutter and hesitation rings when just trying to talk to someone as the film’s main girl,  Kayla .

Also, if it helps, you can almost draw this analogy of Lady Bird is to the 90s and 2017 as Eighth Grade is to 2018 and everything that’s going on right now.

Eighth Grade is now playing in theaters in limited release in NY/LA.

Earlier this year, Jerrod Carmichael ’s 2nd HBO stand-up special, 8 , premiered and offered up the unique hour that we always knew Jerrod was capable of.

Bo Burnham also brings a great look and rhythm (there are a lots of great dramatic pauses) as he joined on as the director for 8.

If you don’t have HBO in any way, shape, or form, you can now download a copy from Google Play to enjoy 8 .

In fact, we’ve got a digital copy to give away to our loyal readers. E-mail [email protected] to enter to win.

Jerrod Carmichael’s Second HBO Special “8″ Premieres Tonight

At 10PM on HBO tonight, Jerrod Carmichael ’s second special “8″ will be premiering. After having some seasons of his own critically acclaimed network sitcom and an hour long HBO special under his belt, we’re thoroughly curious as to what this latest snapshot of Jerrod will be like.

As you’ll notice from this promo , it has a rather distinct look apart from most stand-up specials. That might have something to do with the one and only Bo Burnham directing it. They’re probably are some great surprises in there as well with Bo in the director’s seat.

Will Bo Burnham Tour 2022: An In-Depth Look at the Upcoming Tour and What to Expect

' src=

By Happy Sharer

bo burnham tour 2022

Introduction

Will Bo Burnham is a comedian, musician, and film director who has been making waves in the entertainment industry since 2009. He is known for his unique brand of musical comedy, which combines elements of stand-up comedy, satire, and musical theater. His music often includes social commentary on modern topics such as politics, gender equality, and mental health. Burnham has released five studio albums, directed two feature films, and starred in several television series. He is now gearing up for his 2022 tour, and fans are eagerly awaiting what he has in store.

Overview of Will Bo Burnham and His Music

Burnham’s career began in 2006 when he uploaded his first video to YouTube. He quickly gained a following for his satirical and observational comedy, and by 2009 he was performing sold-out shows in venues across the US. In 2013, he released his debut album, “Bo Fo Sho,” which featured his trademark comedic style. His second album, “Make Happy,” was released in 2016 and included more politically-charged songs such as “My Whole Family (Thinks I’m Gay)” and “From God’s Perspective.” His third album, “What?” was released in 2018 and featured his most popular song to date, “Can’t Handle This.”

In addition to his music, Burnham has also written and directed two feature films. “Eighth Grade” (2018) was critically acclaimed, earning him a Writers Guild of America Award nomination. His second film, “Inside You” (2020), explored the concept of self-acceptance and earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Burnham’s work has been praised for its thoughtful exploration of difficult topics, and his popularity continues to grow each year.

Overview of 2022 Tour

In March 2021, Burnham announced that he would be embarking on a world tour in 2022. The tour will kick off in April 2022 and will make stops in cities across the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Fans can expect to hear some of Burnham’s classic hits, as well as some new material. There will also be special guests onstage with Burnham throughout the tour. It promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans of Burnham’s work.

Interview with Will Bo Burnham on His Upcoming 2022 Tour

Interview with Will Bo Burnham on His Upcoming 2022 Tour

We had the opportunity to speak with Will Bo Burnham about his upcoming tour. Here’s what he had to say about what fans can expect:

“I’m really excited to be hitting the road again after so many months of being stuck at home. I’m looking forward to getting out there and reconnecting with my fans in person. I’ve been working hard on new material for the tour, so you can expect to hear some fresh takes on some of my classic songs, as well as some brand new tunes. I’m also bringing along some special guests to join me onstage, so it should be quite a show!”

When asked about his preparation for the tour, Burnham said:

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but I’m really excited to see it all come together. I’ve been spending a lot of time rehearsing and writing new material, as well as making sure everything is set up logistically. We’re putting a lot of thought into the production design and the overall experience for the fans, so it should be something special.”

Exploring the Themes of Will Bo Burnham’s Music

Burnham’s music often touches on topics such as politics, gender equality, and mental health. His lyrics are often humorous and irreverent, but they also tackle serious issues with intelligence and wit. In his song “From God’s Perspective,” Burnham takes a satirical look at religion and its role in society. In “Can’t Handle This,” he explores the pressures of modern life and the need to take a break from it all. These songs demonstrate Burnham’s ability to take complex topics and turn them into accessible and entertaining pieces of music.

Burnham’s music is also notable for its clever structure. He often uses call-and-response choruses, spoken-word verses, and intricate rhyme schemes to create engaging and memorable songs. His lyrics often contain clever wordplay and double entendres, which add an extra layer of complexity to his music. Burnham’s clever use of language, combined with his thoughtful exploration of tough topics, makes his music truly unique.

Bo Burnham Takes Us Deeper Inside in The Inside Outtakes

bo burnham tour 2022

Bo Burnham is still stuck Inside …sort of. One year after releasing his Emmy-winning Netflix comedy special , Inside, the comedian is back with more musings and jokes from the belly of the pandemic with his latest comedic offering, The Inside Outtakes .

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“A year ago today, I released a special called inside,” tweeted Burnham on Sunday. “I’ve spent the last two months editing together material that i shot for the special but didn’t end up using. it will be on my youtube channel in one hour. i hope you enjoy it.”

Without further ado, Burnham presented The Inside Outtakes —an hour-long special of sorts comprised of various bits and snippets that, for whatever reason, didn’t make the cut the first time. Rest assured: It’s not because they’re any less funny or biting than the material that did make his impressive yet slightly recursive special. In The Inside Outtakes, Burnham displays the same sharp cultural criticism paired with an unflinching look at his own depression and precarious mental state during the height of the pandemic.

Burnham gets back to his roots with The Inside Outtakes, eschewing Netflix for YouTube—the platform that made him an internet sensation when he was just 16 years old. He presents the material complete with fake ad breaks, including commercials for jeans (“Jeans don’t read the news…jeans are jeans”) and a Google-esque missive for would-be content creators where his only advice is to “be yourself” (but if that doesn’t work, then “be somebody else”).

A year out from Inside and a year closer to a return to “normalcy,” the depths of Burnham’s mind—and the effort and care with which he put into the special—are still somewhat alarming. With a little space from the belly of the pandemic, it’s unnerving to be dropped back into the psyche of someone who hasn’t left their apartment in multiple months. While the original special was impressive in how professional it looked for something ostensibly made by one trapped man, The Outtakes shows exactly how painstaking it was for Burnham to achieve that goal. Burnham shows the dozens of takes it took to achieve the final versions of songs like “Content,” “White Woman’s Instagram,” and “Bezos,” often displaying multiple takes of the same moment simultaneously.

Burnham is also unafraid to lampoon the one-man-band aspect of Inside —including a sketch in The Outtakes where he’s the host of a talk show that interviews the special’s director, writer, star, editor, and even hair and makeup people. The twist, of course, is that they’re all him. On the panel, Burnham asks himself why there were no women or people of color involved in the making of Inside. “Thank you for asking this question,” says one of the Burnhams after a long pause. “If you hadn’t asked this question, I was gonna to ask you to ask this question, because it’s so important.”

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna Have a Homecoming in La Máquina

The multiple Burnhams nod along as Burnham gives a convoluted nonanswer to explain the lack of diversity in his solo project. “We could and would and should have done better,” he continues, “and we have and am and shall continue to have done and did and do. Our doing isn’t done and our doneing isn’t did, okay? So know that.”

Often, The Inside Outtakes feels more personal and “real” than Inside. While Burnham’s initial offering provided an intimate look at his psyche, at times it felt like it skirted the actual circumstances of his life. (Burnham doesn’t actually live alone in a single room, for instance.) This time, though, it’s different. The new video includes a Drake -esque bop called “Five Years,” apparently about his long-term relationship with director Lorene Scafaria. “Okay, for the record, you owe me a dumpling. I mean it, I won’t forget,” Burnham sings to his fictional partner, after she takes one from his plate without asking. “You owe me a dumpling or a dumpling equivalent.”

In Inside, Burnham takes a loose, comedic look at his origin story as a viral teen in the song “Problematic.” In The Inside Outtakes, though, he goes a step further, sitting down and watching one of his old YouTube videos. “Since I started out so young, basically every shitty joke, every sort of misstep is…there’s a lot of material I’m just really embarrassed by and makes me cringe for a lot of reasons,” he says during “YouTube Kid.”

“Yeah, it doesn’t hold up,” he continues. “I often wish that I could just, you know, start over. But I also know if I didn’t have that material, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Or who I was before I locked myself in this room and lost my mind.”

For the many obsessed with Inside, The Inside Outtakes will be a vital look into Burnham’s madness and genius. For those, like myself, who liked Inside but longed for something more personal and authentic, The Inside Outtakes breaks the cycle of Inside —and like the chicken from The Outtakes ’ final musical offering, actually gets to the other side.

History of Omsk

Foundation of omsk.

The need to build a Russian fortress on the banks of the Irtysh at the mouth of the Om River arose in connection with the steppe nomadic peoples. In particular, with the Oirats, whose tribes in the first decades of the 17th century began to appear within the borders of the Russian state being under the onslaught of their external enemies and as a result of internal civil strife. However, various foreign and domestic political problems of Russia hindered the development and defense of the South Siberian borders.

The situation changed only at the beginning of the 18th century, when the Russian conquest of Siberia intensified. Since Peter I paid great attention to geographical research in the south, the expeditions of that time combined socio-political tasks and tasks of scientific research.

One of such expeditions was led by the Russian military and statesman, associate of Peter I, Major General Ivan Bukhgolts. The goals of the expedition, numbering about 3,000 people, were to search for ore and gold deposits, the discovery of trade routes to India and China, as well as the construction of towns on the Irtysh River.

The expedition left Tobolsk to the south along the Irtysh in July 1715. In the spring of 1716, after a conflict with the Dzungars in the north of today’s Kazakhstan, the remnants of the expedition (about 700 people) withdrew to the mouth of the Om River, where they laid a new fortress named Omsky ostrog (fortified settlement).

According to the census of 1725, 992 people lived in the fortress, in 1742 - 1,092 people. From the first years of its existence, it served as a place of exile for prisoners. After serving hard labor and imprisonment, a lot of them stayed in Omsk for permanent residence.

More Historical Facts…

Omsk in the second half of the 18th century

The ethnic composition of the region’s population was formed in the process of settling the territory. Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles, Belarusians, and representatives of many other nationalities were sent here to serve or were exiled. The indigenous people of the region were the Siberian Tatars and Kazakhs, who switched to a sedentary lifestyle.

The foundation of the second Omsk fortress took place in 1762. The first fortress, although it occupied a favorable geographical position, was wooden and, by the middle of the 18th century, it was dilapidated. In 1765, new stone fortifications were constructed. The first stone structure of the fortress was the Resurrection Military Cathedral, built in 1773 and preserved to this day.

In the end of the 18th century, the Omsk fortress was one of the largest structures in the eastern part of the Russian Empire, its area was more than 30 hectares. In 1782, it was transformed into a town named Omsk within the Tobolsk Governorate. In 1785, the coat of arms of Omsk was approved.

Omsk became the center of management of the Siberian transport routes and the Siberian Cossack army, which not only guarded the South Siberian borders, but also made a huge contribution to the economic development of the steppe expanses of Kazakhstan, the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire.

Omsk in the 19th century

The fire of 1819 destroyed almost half of the town including the archive and the magistrate of Omsk with all the first archival documents. Therefore information about the life of Omsk in the 18th - early 19th centuries is scarce and fragmentary. In 1825, the population of the town was about 9,000 people.

In 1829, the town’s development plan was approved. It was made by the famous Petersburg architect V.I. Geste, who took the city of St. Petersburg as a model with its wide avenues, huge neighborhoods, fountains, cast-iron bridges, and an abundance of green spaces.

The composition of the population of Omsk was not quite usual. In the middle of the 19th century, since Omsk was the center of the military and civil administration, the proportion of the military in the local population reached about 60%.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature), who served a term of hard labor in the Omsk prison in 1850-1854, in a letter to his brother gave Omsk the following description: “Omsk is a disgusting town. There are almost no trees. In summer, heat and wind with sand, in winter, a snowstorm. I have not seen nature. The town is dirty, military and highly depraved.”

By the second half of the 19th century, Omsk in its development outstripped many steppe towns and became not only an administrative, but also a commercial and industrial center. In 1861, in Omsk, there were 2,122 houses (31 stone houses), 34 factories and plants, about 20 thousand residents.

In 1892, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began, which gave a new impetus to the economy of Siberian towns and positively influenced Omsk. The development of the Trans-Siberian Railway caused an increase in the urban population due to migrants who came to work from the central part of the Russian Empire. According to the 1897 census, 37.3 thousand people lived in Omsk. The town had 14 streets with a total length of more than 140 km and 13 squares.

Omsk in the first half of the 20th century

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great changes for Siberia. Mass peasant colonization caused a sharp leap in the development of the region’s economy, primarily its agrarian sector, and the Trans-Siberian Railway ensured the inclusion of the local economy in the system of the All-Russian and European markets.

Due to its favorable economic and geographical position - at the intersection of the railway and the Irtysh River, in the middle of a vast agricultural territory - Omsk quickly turned into a large transport, trade and industrial center of Western Siberia and Governor-Generalship of the Steppes (Eastern and Central Kazakhstan).

Wholesale trade in bread, butter and other agricultural products was concentrated here. Omsk also became one of the industrial, social and cultural centers of Western Siberia. By 1903, the city’s population grew to 60 thousand people. In 1914, it had about 134.8 thousand residents. Omsk became the most populous city in Siberia.

During the Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire, from June 1918 to November 1919, Omsk was the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, Admiral Alexander Kolchak, who declared this city the capital of white Russia opposing red Russia of the Bolsheviks. Soviet power was finally established in the city in 1920.

In the summer of 1921, an event took place that had a decisive impact on the cultural and economic life of Omsk. The functions of the administrative center of Siberia were transferred from it to the city of Novonikolaevsk (future Novosibirsk). In 1934, Omsk became the administrative center of a separate Omsk Oblast.

Over the years of industrialization, Omsk became one of the largest centers for agricultural engineering in the USSR. The metal-working industry also developed at a rapid pace. In 1939, Omsk numbered more than 288 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 200 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk, as well as 60 hospitals, dozens of educational institutions, theaters, museums, and hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Omsk after the Second World War

In the post-war years, new enterprises were put into operation in Omsk, all existing factories and plants were reconstructed and expanded. The industrial potential of the city was also strengthened by the Omsk oil refinery, the largest in the country. In connection with the rapid development of industry, especially petrochemical enterprises, the ecological situation deteriorated. The concentration of harmful substances in the air sharply increased. In 1964, the population of Omsk was about 702 thousand people.

In the 1970s-1980s, Omsk developed rapidly. In 1975, the city’s population exceeded 1 million. The most pressing problem was the ecological situation. Omsk was in the top 10 cities of Russia in terms of environmental pollution. Another problem that required an immediate solution was the development of passenger transport. The capacity of Omsk streets was exhausted, and therefore the construction of the subway became an urgent issue.

The economic crisis that gripped Russia after the collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economy of Omsk and the region as a whole. There was a significant decline in industrial production, construction volumes fell, and unemployment rose. A lot of organizations of the defense complex, research institutes, and design bureaus found themselves in a deep crisis without the state defense order.

The share of mechanical engineering and metalworking, light industry, and, to a lesser extent, chemical and petrochemical, forestry and woodworking industries decreased. At the same time, the share of the fuel industry, energy, and construction materials industry began to grow.

In the 2000s, Omsk again became one of the most important economic centers of Western Siberia with a developing mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, various branches of the woodworking, construction industry, and a highly productive agro-industrial complex. In recent years, Omsk has also acquired the features of one of the largest Siberian centers of entrepreneurship and banking/financial activities.

Omsk - Features

Omsk is located in the south of the West Siberian Plain at the confluence of the Om River into the Irtysh, about 150 km from the border of Russia with Kazakhstan. About 60% of all residents of Omsk Oblast live in Omsk. The City Day of Omsk is celebrated on the first Saturday of August.

The city’s coat of arms is very similar to the first coat of arms of Omsk approved by Empress Catherine II in 1785. It depicts a part of the brick fortifications, which symbolizes the reason for its foundation as a fortress and the center of the Siberian defensive line.

Omsk belongs to the temperate climatic zone with a continental climate of the forest-steppe of the West Siberian belt. It is distinguished by an abundance of sunlight. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.6 degrees Celsius. The highest wind speeds are observed in winter and spring, which is the reason for frequent snow and dust storms.

In the past, the ecological situation in Omsk was very unfavorable. Since 2011, the city’s environmental development rating has increased significantly. This was the result of large-scale modernization of many large industries (including the Omsk oil refinery). Today, road transport is the main source of air pollution in the city.

The level of pollution of the Omsk rivers - Irtysh and Om - remains consistently high. Swimming in them is prohibited. While industrial effluents are becoming more environmentally friendly, sewers are releasing waste products including diesel fuel and petroleum products into the rivers. Dust raised by dust storms is also a serious problem for the city as it contains a lot of harmful substances including lead.

The city’s industry is based on oil refining, petrochemistry, chemical industry, mechanical engineering (production of aerospace equipment, armored vehicles, agricultural equipment). Omsk is a major transport junction - the Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city from west to east, and the navigable Irtysh River crosses it from south to north. Omsk Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Surgut, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Salekhard, Kazan, Krasnodar, Sochi.

The unfinished subway of Omsk has become famous in Russia thanks to its only one fully built station. Its construction began back in 1992. However, due to funding problems, the completion of the first line was postponed numerous times. In 2019, it was finally decided to permanently stop construction. For local residents, because of the long wait for the completion of the construction, the Omsk metro symbolizes unrealizable hopes, they talk about it with irony.

In Omsk, there are practically no buildings higher than 50 meters, according to this parameter it is one of the lowest cities with a population of over one million. 130 architectural monuments are concentrated in the central part of the city, almost half of the total number.

Main Attractions of Omsk

Dormition Cathedral - the largest church in Omsk located in the very center of the city. The original church was built in 1891-1898. In 1935, it was completely destroyed. In 2005-2007, an exact copy of the building was restored in its original place. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Omsk. At night, the building is illuminated and looks especially majestic. Tarskaya Street, 7.

Irtysh Embankment - the main walking street of Omsk with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River. Built in the middle of the 20th century, the embankment was reconstructed in the 2000s. You can walk along the alley on foot, ride rollerblades or a bike.

Merchant Batyushkin’s Mansion (1902). This architectural monument is located on the Irtysh Embankment. It is also known as the Kolchak’s House because Alexander Kolchak, the Supreme Ruler of Russia, lived in this building in 1919. One part of the building is occupied by the registry office of the Central District of Omsk. The Center for the Study of the History of the Russian Civil War is also open here. Irtyshskaya Naberezhnaya Street, 9.

Omsk State Museum of History and Local Lore - one of the oldest museums in Siberia and Russia founded in 1878. In total, this museum has over 200 thousand various objects of cultural, historical and artistic value. The museum is especially proud of such exhibits as the cast-iron figures of the Chinese lions Shi-Tzu, presented to the museum from China in 1895, as well as the skeleton of a woolly mammoth almost 3 meters high. Lenina Street, 23?.

Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts named after M.A. Vrubel - one of the largest museums of fine arts in Siberia. It has collections of foreign and Russian art from antiquity to the present day. In total, there are over 22 thousand works by painters, graphic artists and sculptors, as well as more than 1.5 thousand rare folios.

Walking through the exhibition halls, you can admire the canvases of Shishkin, Aivazovsky, Surikov, Repin, Serov, Vereshchagin. The exhibition of rare icons dating from the 17th-20th centuries is of constant interest among visitors, as well as a unique collection of jewelry made of precious metals found in the Scythian and Sarmatian burial mounds. Two buildings of the museum are located at Lenina Street 3 and 23.

In November 2019, a new exhibition was opened in a historical building at Muzeynaya Street, 4 - the exhibition of art of the 20th-21st centuries. The Hermitage-Siberia Center is located here too - the first representation of The State Hermitage Museum (the second-largest art museum in the world) beyond the Urals.

Chokana Valikhanova Street - a pedestrian street located in the historic part of Omsk. The street is decorated with abstract architectural forms, flower beds, wrought-iron lanterns. The walking area ends with an observation deck with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River.

Museum of Kondraty Belov . The museum of this landscape painter born in Omsk can be found in a picturesque wooden house, which is considered one of the most interesting architectural monuments of Omsk. The exposition tells about the life and work of Kondraty Belov, as well as about the history of the building itself.

In total, this museum has about 700 exhibits. The permanent exhibition also includes works by Kondraty Belov’s son Stanislav and paintings by some other local artists. In addition, temporary exhibitions of contemporary Omsk artists are regularly held here. Chokana Valikhanova Street, 10.

Plumber Stepanych Monument - an unusual sculpture located in the center of Omsk, which you can literally stumble upon while walking along Lenin Street between the houses #12 and #14. Leaning out of the hatch, the plumber is depicted as realistic and life-size as possible. It is among the most photographed monuments in Omsk. There is a similar sculpture in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

Lyuba Monument . This sculpture, located on the opposite side of Lenin Street from the monument to the plumber Stepanych, is especially loved by Omsk residents and tourists, who love to be photographed against its background.

This beauty in a lace dress with a neckline and a crinoline sitting on an openwork bench and reading a novel had a real prototype - Lyubov (diminutively Lyuba or Lyubasha) Gasford, the wife of the Governor-General of Siberia, who lived in Omsk in the 19th century and died at a young age due to illness. One of the streets of Omsk and the park are named in her memory. She is a local symbol of femininity and beauty.

Omsk Fire Tower - a picturesque architectural monument built at the beginning of the 20th century. Inside the tower there are museum expositions dedicated to the local fire brigade and the history of tower construction. Internatsionalnaya Street, 41?.

Park of Culture and Rest named after the 30th anniversary of the Komsomol - a popular place for walks, recreation and entertainment of Omsk residents and tourists, which has retained “the spirit of the Soviet era” in its name. Today, on an area of 73 hectares, several zones have been organized, various types of recreation are presented. There are walking alleys, ponds, water activities, for example, riding on hydro-scooters.

The ice town is open in winter, the Return of the Dinosaurs exhibition - in summer. The “House Upside Down” exposition is also popular with tourists. This park is a place for mass festivities, city celebrations and events. Maslenitsa, Christmas, City Day, and other holidays are celebrated here. Maslennikova Street, 136.

Natural Park “Bird Harbor” - a specially protected area located on the path of bird migration in the central part of Omsk. During autumn flights, up to 3 thousand birds stop here for rest. It is a great place to enjoy nature, walk along the eco-trail, and observe the life of birds. The park is situated in the floodplain on the left bank of the Irtysh River next to the Victory Park on Yeniseyskaya Street.
