Great Desert Walks 2024

Be prepared for the real thing - walking and living in the Simpson Desert on a true wilderness experience.    Our treks begin where the roads stop - in fact if ever contemporary walking treks were described as 'off the beaten track' these would be it - there are no tracks or roads where we go and on most treks we are blazing a new path across the red dunes, alongside the inland river systems, or across vast gibber flats and desert claypans.

The Outback Camel Company has been walking in all of Australia's desert's since 1976 and we believe that packcamels are still the best way to explore our great deserts with the smallest environmental padprint possible.

Our camel team will enable you to experience the Outback in a way that you may never have thought

possible, reconnecting you to the landscape as you explore the Strzelecki and Sturt Stony Deserts.

We call it Desert Bushwalking.

Trekking with our amiable, charismatic camels offers an intimacy with the soul of the country that is completely

absent when travelling by vehicle, and allows a continuum of discovery,

which is important to understanding the heart of this ancient land.

...Slow Travel...

Simpson Desert Australia

Due to the impending and widespread flooding in the eastern Simpson Desert, we have had to transfer

our 2024 operations to the Strzelecki and Sturt Stony Deserts in South Australia.

Trek dates remain the same, and all treks will still begin and conclude in Birdsville

Camel Tours and Treks SA conducts various camel riding experiences on the Fleurieu Peninsula . Our theme ‘From the Bush to Beach’ describes where we operate in a nutshell. We can be booked for couples, small or large groups, catering rides to suit each groups needs, time allowances and taste buds. At the conclusion of each tour we offer tea, juice and cake or riders can choose to be pampered with a cheese, biscuit and fruit platter with fine chocolates and local wine to follow.

Camel Tours and Treks SA has standard tours that depart seven days a week all year round taking riders into tall pine forests, native scrub and beaches, all lead by an experienced friendly tour guide and camels.

Fleurieu Peninsula 90 Minute Camel Riding Tour – SH06

Camel Tours and Treks SA conducts a two hour nature based camel riding adventure on the Fleurieu Peninsula, ideal for families and friends to share a special time together. Riders cruise through tall pine forest and native scrub (watch for kangaroos), and the tour ends with spectacular valley views.

. Operates: . By arrangement.

Fleurieu Bush Tracks 90 Minute Camel Charter – S05

Fleurieu Bush Tracks meanders through forest which provides enjoyable riding in a relaxed environment. Situated in the South Mount Lofty Ranges, 45 minutes drive from Adelaide , near the township of Mount Compass . There are opportunities to sight numerous kangaroos within the forest and natural scrub setting as well as a variety of flora and fauna including some endangered species.

. Operates: . Tours depart daily, departure times on application.

Coroong National Park 5 Day Camel Trek – CTTSA03

Perhaps one of the best aspects of these treks are their ease of accessibility, located just two and a half hours south of Adelaide, a well known area for many Australians as the location for the film ‘Storm Boy’ based on the children’s book by Colin Thiele.

. Camel Tours and Treks SA offer this exciting four-day summer trek through the stunning and diverse Coorong National Park. Travel with their robust camels and experienced guides through magic landscapes, enjoying tasty camp cooked meals, bushwalking, camping, camel riding, stargazing, bird and wildlife watching.

. Treks focus on environmental (flora and fauna), historic and indigenous cultural themes. The Coorong is of particular importance to our friends the Ramindjeri / Ngarrindjeri indigenous people and has an extraordinary number of habitation sites, shell middens and mounds, cooking ovens, camping and burial sites, estimated to number more than 6000.

. Camel Tours and Treks SA would like to share the Coorong National Park with those of you who love nature and would like to experience shimmering pink saline lakes, mallee scrub, grasslands dotted with fauna, dune systems sprinkled with varied seasonal bush tucker plants, beach as far as the eye can see and a vast inland lagoon attended by visiting migratory birds some of which have travelled from as far away as China and Siberia. Join Camel Tours and Treks SA for an unforgettable holiday.

. Day One (pre-trek familiarisation) – Arrive at Gemini Downs Coorong Holiday Centre from 1400 onwards. Evening meal and use of facilities, familiarisation with camp equipment and trek itinerary.

. Day Two (first day of trekking) – After breakfast and pack up there may be time for some early morning recreation activities, pool, table tennis or a bush walk. Visit Salt Creek information centre and travel into Coorong National Park to the trek start point. Meet the camels and have riding and wagon brief. Have lunch, then trekking to 28 Mile Crossing camp ground. Each days trekking will pass extremely varied landscapes, flora and fauna. Set up camp, enjoy a dusk walk, dinner and evening activities.

. Day Three – Pre morning walk, breakfast and pack up camp. Trekking to 32 Mile Crossing camp ground. This will be our last day trekking along side the dune system, passing ephemeral saline lakes, grassland and mallee; we will find a nice lunch spot to explore a landscape. Set up camp, dusk walk and dinner and evening activities.

. Day Four – The Southern Ocean. The morning routine is similar to day three, then trekking through coastal scrubland, bare sand dunes onto the steeply shelving beach of the Younghusband Peninsula; an unbroken stretch of sand extending for over 150 kilometres from the Murray Mouth in the north to the Granites, (north of Kingston) in the south. Focus on Aboriginal heritage and observation of habitation sites, European exploration and settlement. This will be your longest days trekking along the beach (lunch in the dunes) travelling towards tea tree crossing campground and The Coorong Lagoon to set up camp and dinner.

. Day Five – Morning routine and relaxation after yesterdays trek. Self exploration, rest, walk, photograph. The lagoon is a very important area for migratory waders and serves as a refuge in the drier months for many birds; the whole Park is included on the list of Wetlands of International Importance. Focus on observation of flora and fauna, lunch and pack up camp site. Generally Tea Tree Crossing is passable in the summer when the water in the lagoon dries up (if not roll up pants and bare feet). We will cross here and make our way back to Loop road which travels back towards Salt Creek. Break for afternoon tea and goodbyes; trekkers will be picked up at 1500, returning to Gemini Downs Coorong Holiday Centre.

. Operates: . Treks begin at Gemini Downs Coorong Holiday Centre at 1400 on day one for pre-trek brief and get together. Departure dates 27 February 2006, 6 March 2006, 13 March 2006, 20 March 2006, 27 March 2006, 27 March 2006, 3 April 2006, 19 April 2006, 24 April 2006, 1 May 2006, 7 May 2006.

Goolwa Beach – Sir Richard Peninsula 90 Minute Camel Walk – CTTSA02

The Goolwa Beach – Sir Richard Peninsula camel walk cruises along an expansive coastline allowing riders a magnificent view of beach as far as the eye can see. Often we are the only people present, many overseas passengers enjoy this alone. This stretch of coastline is of particular significance to our friends the Ngarrindjeri indigenous people whose evidence of past history here can still be found and they continue to care for this area. The sand dunes are protected and provide a beautiful backdrop to the blue ocean. Riders will find this charter to be particularly relaxing, even on hot days the cool breeze off the Southern Ocean and a break for a swim midway will cool us down. You will feel like you are the only people in existence as we walk towards the mouth of the River Murray, before returning for refreshments

. Operates: . Monday to Friday, departure times during school terms 1150, during school holidays 1000. Departure times are subject to weather conditions.

Fleurieu Bush Tracks 90 Minute Camel Charter – CTTSA01

Camel Tours & Treks SA conducts a 90 minute nature based camel riding adventure on the Fleurieu Peninsula, ideal for families and friends to share a special date together. Camels are genuine personalities, riders often find tour guides and camels have conflicting objectives. Guides want to walk through the forest, while the camels generally want to eat it! Riders cruise through tall pine forest and native scrub (watch for kangaroos) eventuating in spectacular valley views.

Explore The Outback

Australia has a vast remote interior, much of it largely untouched. By night, the outback is deathly quiet, with the only light provided by the stars and the moon - a perfect oportunity for stargazing. Explore the isolated heart of the country, meet and connect with Aboriginal people and experience one of the oldest living cultures in the world. Go ‘walk-about’ and immerse yourself with Australia’s endless outback horizons.

Australia's Natural Wonders

Australia is a land of immense and diverse natural beauty. You'll see things here that you just won't see anywhere else in the world. Each corner of Austalia has an endless array of stunning natural landmarks just waiting for you to take the time to explore.

Australia has wide variety of accommodation options to suit most budgets and travelling preferences. Choose from luxury lodges, boutique hotels, serviced apartments, motels, bed and breakfasts, caravan parks as well as youth and backpacker hostels.

Australia's Best Islands

Around the coast of Australia there are many amazing islands that are an unforgetable pleasure for all who visit. Naturally, the Great Barrier Reef dominates any list of great Australian islands, with pristine wonders like the Whitsundays, Dunk Island and Lizard Island. Further off the east coast is the spectacular Lord Howe Island and off the coast of South Australia is the unspoilt Kangaroo Island.

Bush walking or Camel riding

Whether you're looking to explore the Outback at a leisurely pace, take in the stunning scenery, or simply enjoy a unique experience that you'll remember for years to come, camel riding and bush walking are the perfect additions to any journey.

Camel riding is an unforgettable experience that's sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone looking to add a touch of adventure to their holiday. This age-old mode of transportation has been used for centuries, allowing travellers to cross vast distances with ease and grace.

Bushwalking is a thrilling way to explore the rugged beauty of Outback Australia. As you walk, you'll encounter a rich variety of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, and a host of other creatures that make their homes in the outback. Our experienced guides will help you identify these fascinating animals and share their insights into the unique ecology of the region, giving you a deeper understanding and appreciation of this incredible ecosystem.

Bush walking guests enjoy the same amount of contact with our friendly camels, crew and delicious camp oven meals, at a reduced rate. You can also choose to accompany our experienced cameleers in leading a non-riding camel string. Riding guests can choose to ride or walk throughout the trek, combining the two options at their leisure. When booking online, choose 'Bushw alking option' if desi red, to receive a generous discount.

“My favourite part was the sharing of experiences with other travellers amongst the beauty of the Australian Outback on our journey from one campsite to the next and around the camp fires at night. The hospitality provided was well above expectation with sleeping comfort, awesome food and luggage support. To observe and be apart of the camel connection with people was so interesting and definitely worth the experience. It brought for me a sense of calm and refeshed my outlook on life overall. I feel I have gained a new sense of direction in my life."

“Amazing experience trekking the outback riding happy, friendly camels led by knowledgeable, competent and friendly guides. Very well organised, epic scenery, and by the end of 4 nights it was like we'd all been friends for ages. I had heaps of laughs, enjoyed the physical challenges, including the nervousness of a Kiwi for Ozzie wildlife, and loved every bit of it!.”
