17 of the Best Places in Canada for Solo Travelers

05/05/2022 by Kristin Addis 16 Comments

Oh, Canada, you’re one fantastic country to visit, especially as a solo traveler!

For those who love the outdoors, want a safe and incredibly friendly place to travel in, and want to experience many different cultures all at once, Canada is the perfect solo destination at any time of year.

Canada is easy to navigate, has a very low crime rate, is absolutely huge (so you can’t run out of national and provincial parks or activities), and is breathtakingly beautiful. Need we say more?

Though the whole country is worth exploring, these are a few places that my fellow travel bloggers and I think are particularly good for solo travelers:

Table of Contents

1. Le Baluchon Éco-villégiature, Québec

Le baluchon's spa nordik

Sitting on a thousand acres in the Mauricie region of Québec, this luxurious eco-resort is the perfect wintertime getaway if your solo trip is all about self-care. Featuring a Nordic-style spa, a farm-to-table restaurant, and extra cozy details throughout, you’ll feel completely taken care of here.

Activities around Le Baluchon Éco-villégiature include skiing, fat-biking, riding in a horse carriage, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Although this destination is just two hours from Montréal, it feels a world away from any city noises and is the ideal place to relax and unwind.

Read more about how to have the best winter getaway near Montréal here .

2. Gatineau, Québec

Gatineau, Québec

The first stop on my fall Québec road trip , Gatineau is just the right place to find some peace and quiet with lots of nature. Check out Nordic Spa-Nature for a bit of pampering, or explore Gatineau Park, which has 360 square kilometers of nature to explore. There you’ll find Pink Lake, which has a 2.5km (1.55 mile) trail around it, ideal for a leisurely stroll or a jog.

This destination is great on its own for a quick weekend trip but also makes the best launching point for a road trip through Québec, which I definitely recommend for a solo adventure.

3. Banff, Alberta

best places in canada for solo travelers

Alberta was my first stop ever in Canada, and by the time I left, I was seriously asking myself if I should just come back and move in.  Alberta is a winter wonderland , with snow-shoeing tracks, Nordic skiing, ice climbing, and ice fishing all nearby. It’s also home to excellent downhill skiing in Banff and Lake Louise. In the summer, it’s the perfect jumping-off point for hiking trails galore.

Though everywhere in Canada has its own special beauty, this part of Alberta sure is a standout.

4. Icefields Parkway, Alberta

best places in canada for solo travelers

“The Icefields Parkway is not particularly long — 233 kilometers from Jasper to Lake Louise — and is easy to do in one direction in a day, even with all the stops. And it’s these stops that make it perfect for a solo traveler. You’ll never have a chance to get bored on this drive, because there are constantly places you’ll want to get out of the car to take photos and explore off the road. And then, regardless of which direction you go, you’ll find friendly towns with lots of other travelers at the end of the road trip, in Jasper or Banff National Parks.” — Michael of  Time Travel Turtle

5. Churchill, Manitoba

Churchill, Manitoba

What could be more epic than seeing the northern lights? Seeing them in complete silence, taking in the beautiful solitude of the moment. Churchill, Manitoba, is undoubtedly one of the greatest places in the world to see this phenomenon, due to its proximity to the auroral oval in the remote subarctic. That said, this destination is certainly not for cold-weather haters, especially considering that the best time to see the northern lights is the dead of winter.

Besides beholding the iconic aurora borealis, there’s plenty of other splendid things to do in Churchill . Take a snowmobile over a frozen bay to visit a shipwreck, go dog-sledding, or check out the many murals in Churchill , which touch on the current global climate crisis.

6. Winnipeg, Manitoba

best places in canada for solo travelers

When I told some Canadian friends that I was heading to Winnipeg for a couple weeks last summer, they scratched their heads and asked why. Manitoba must be Canada’s most underrated province, yet it’s probably the friendliest and one of the least crowded to travel through in the summer months. It also has thousands of lakes, so if you’re into paddling, it’s the ideal place to get some solitude.

I joined a  multiday canoeing adventure  right out of Winnipeg, enjoyed the summer Fringe Festival, and took a road trip around Lake Winnipeg (you can read more about that on my Manitoba writeup on  Alamo’s Scenic Drive ). Plus, it’s a great place for some pampering , as the wellness scene is hot right now.

7. Montréal, Quebec

best places in canada for solo travelers

8. Ottawa, Ontario

best places in canada for solo travelers

“Ottawa is also a student city, with two large universities and a college, so there are plenty of young people around. Plus… locals are known to be super friendly. It’s pretty common to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger while waiting for a coffee or… admiring artwork in the National Gallery of Canada. If you visit during the summer, head to Major’s Hill Park or Nepean Point. Both are favorite hangout spots for locals looking to soak up the sun.” — Hannah of  Eat Sleep Breathe Travel

9. Killarney Provincial Park, Ontario

best places in canada for solo travelers

“For safety and additional paddle power, I hired a guide from Killarney Outfitters. They also provided all the gear and food necessary for a successful and bear-free weekend in the park. If this is your first canoe camping trip — like it was for me — I can only recommend heading out with a guide who is experienced and skilled in order to keep you safe and entertained.” — Kathi from  Watch Me See

10. Vancouver Island, British Columbia

best places in canada for solo travelers

“Check out Victoria, the capital of British Columbia and the biggest city on Vancouver Island, which feels kind of like a British city transplanted [to] Canada, but with a hippie vibe. The people are friendly and often environmentally conscious, which is no surprise given the beautiful surroundings they live in. You can explore Vancouver Island by public transport, hiring a car, or hitchhiking, which is fairly common on the island.” — Sonja of  Migrating Miss

11. Vancouver, British Columbia

best places in canada for solo travelers

“A place you can’t miss is the beautiful Stanley Park, [which offers] beautiful views of the harbor and the skyline. If you’re looking for a nice workout, hike up the Grouse Grind — you’ll be rewarded by spectacular views of the city. Afterwards, you can relax on the city beach and enjoy the sunset.

“For me, Vancouver is the perfect city — enjoy your visit!” — Patrick of  German Backpacker

12. Sunshine Coast, British Columbia

best places in canada for solo travelers

“Everyone loves Vancouver, and rightfully so. It is perfect for the solo traveler, with its bustling bars and jumping hostels, but visitors keep missing a gem over the water, Canada’s Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast is made up of lots of small towns and even more lakes. Getting around is the only stumbling block for solo travelers, as the bus service isn’t that well connected. However, that really isn’t an issue, because the types of travelers that hit the Coast in BC are relaxed, friendly, and always willing to take others along with them on their trip.

“Staying at Up the Creek in Roberts Creek comes highly recommended for its relaxed vibes, hammocks on the porch, and free bikes to pedal to the bigger towns of Sechelt and Gibsons. Don’t be fooled by the one-shop village status: Roberts Creek has a big social calendar of live bands and fayres. The number of return visitors (family, couple, adventure, yoga loving, or solo) is a testament to just how lovely the Sunshine Coast is.” — Gemma of  Two Scots Abroad

13. Calgary, Alberta

best places in canada for solo travelers

14. Québec City, Québec

best places in canada for solo travelers

“Based on just one statistic, Québec City already ranks high for solo female travelers as the province with the lowest crime rate in Canada. Other factors that will push Québec City to the top of the list are: friendly locals, year-round beauty and activities, art and culture, [being a] bike-friendly destination, and that sweet.. sweet.. maple taffy!” — Pari of  Traveling Pari

15. Kananaskis Country, Alberta

best places in canada for solo travelers

“Active women can get lost in the beautiful sights and dizzying heights on any of the superlative hiking, cycling, and cross-country ski trails that will suit all skill levels. As always when traveling solo, some safety precautions should be taken, so always leave your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member, and carry bear spray when on the trails. Making noise is the best deterrent against run-ins with carnivores, so sing a song to yourself like no one is listening, except for the bears!

best places in canada for solo travelers

“For a taste of rustic luxury, book yourself into the beautiful and remote Mount Engadine Lodge and sample the delicious locally inspired cuisine while watching the sun set over the meadow from the lodge’s expansive wrap-around deck. Included in the nightly rates are afternoon high tea with scrumptious treats, an award-worthy dinner, a hearty breakfast, and a packed lunch to take with you on any number of the adventures [in] the area. In the winter, you could snowshoe [in] the lodge’s meadow, or ski any of amazing nearby trails. In the warmer months, there are endless hiking opportunities and the chance to cycle to the top of the highest paved road in Canada. The possibilities are limited only by how much energy you have.

“For ladies seeking a more relaxing retreat in the mountains, check into the Delta Hotels Kananaskis Lodge for a weekend of pampering and fine dining in the most gorgeous mountain setting.

“If Kananaskis is not on your radar for solo female travel already, it should be now. Its exhilarating mountain scenery and breathtaking adventures will give any adventurous woman the chance to get away from it all in the most incredible setting.” — Thea of  Zen Travellers

16. Toronto, Ontario

best places in canada for solo travelers

“My favorite things to do include exploring the extensive street art, including Graffiti Alley and Underpass Park, spending a day in Kensington Market wandering through the shops and sampling food, finding unique coffee shops (my favorite was Odin, a Scandinavian-inspired café and bar), and eating my way through Toronto. You can find just about any cuisine imaginable in Toronto, and as a vegan, I had absolutely no trouble eating to my heart’s content. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled as you’re walking around to see all the fun and eclectic parts of the [city], such as an entire store devoted to condoms, a Harry Potter–themed shop, and a dog fountain.” — Ashley of  The Southern Gypsy

best places in canada for solo travelers

17. St. John’s, Newfoundland

St. John's, Newfoundland

This small city may be one of the least populated capital cities in the country, but it’s packed with things to do to keep any solo traveler sufficiently occupied. For the outdoorsy solo traveler, check out the East Coast Trail, which stretches a whopping 336km [209 miles] along the eastern coastline of Newfoundland. You can hike it in chunks or embark on a rugged backpacking journey along any of the 25 wilderness trails.

There’s a lot of history and charm to St. John’s, which you can check out at Signal Hill National Historic Site and the Quidi Vidi village. The downtown area of the city is vibrant, colorful, and full of kitschy shops and restaurants. This is a superb place to immerse yourself in Eastern Canada’s robust culture. Locals here are extremely friendly, so you likely won’t feel so alone.

Bonus: Music Festivals

First Name:

Those are a few of our favorite places to travel in Canada, though a list for the world’s second largest country is, of course, probably endless! For safety, outdoor adventures, beauty, and easy-to-navigate cities with plenty to do year-round, Canada has it all.

It is great to see such a positive review of my adopted country including my home Montreal. However, as somebody who has traveled a fair amount in the world AND driven Canada from coast to coast, I feel you are doing a big part of the population a disservice when you claim the “13 of the Best Places in Canada for Solo Travelers” and completely neglect a large part of the country.

The maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland are where some of the oldest settlements in North America can be found dating back to the days of the Vikings. Add to that some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Also, speaking as a seasoned traveler, I have always found the Maritimers some of the friendliest people on the planet.

I realize you cannot cover all of such a vast country, after all it spans six time zones, but I hope you will return someday to visit the east. I believe you will be adding many more “best places” to your list.

Oh, and then there are the northern Territories.

Love your blog. Happy travels.

I’d love to see more of Canada! Thanks for adding in some more places.

04/08/2018 at 8:46 am

Nice list BMTM! Going to peak into Canada this summer hopefully. I have these two thoughts! Like you said the list can go on and on…..

1. It is referenced in the Toronto, Ontario listing for a second, but I really enjoyed Niagara Falls, Ontario (and New York on the US side) and the Canadian Falls is the bigger of the two groups of falls. It is fun for solo travelers, couples and families. It goes well with a jaunt to Toronto! I realize it is very touristy, but you can avoid the crowds by timing it right.

2. I would also encourage people to visit New Brunswick/Nova Scotia – two of Canada’s eastern maritime provinces. In these little provinces, you have so many things to explore including whale watching and the funky tremendous tides in the Bay of Fundy (up to 50 feet/15 meters!). Then there are the Reversing Falls (yes literally), gorgeous forests, wildlife, and even small mountains with nice views (especially in the fall!) and a surprisingly challenging climb! To be honest, haven’t been there myself but my travel friends rave about it. Some include it as part of an adventure trip that includes the state of Maine. Did you know Sugarloaf Mountain in New Brunswick is an ancient extinct volcano??

And I encourage people as an extension to the listing of “Winnipeg, Manitoba” to look at Kristin’s posts titled “Murals that Tell a Story of Climate Change in Churchill, Manitoba” and “Whale Watching and Polar Bear Encounters in Canada”. These are adventures worth pursuing. Imagine kayaking with Belugas coming to you for a visit!

Heard great things about Nova Scotia too.

I always manage to skip over Canada cause I figure i’ll get there eventually so I should go somewhere further away lol. But everyone who has gone there loves it!

04/10/2018 at 5:36 pm

I am disappointed that you haven’t mentioned the Maritimes and Newfoundland. I am actually shocked. How did you do your research ? On a computer, only? The friendliest, funniest, most welcoming people, and in breathtaking surrounds, that will take your breath away, are in the Atlantic Provinces. If you want adventure, hospitality for solo travellers as well as nature, that’s where you should head.

04/11/2018 at 8:03 am

By asking people who have been to Canada alone which parts they enjoyed, as you can see from the article 😉 Thanks for the recs, though.

You are definitely in the minority for having enjoyed Winnipeg. Most people are repulsed by it. The Charlevoix region of Quebec is incredible, and a less known area, if you’re more of a nature person, is Northern Ontario. I’ve always been surprised that it’s never become a serious travel destination other than for fishing. A absolutely beautiful place.

Repulsed? Whoa, I thought it was so underrated!

I am glad you enjoyed Montreal ! Canada surely is a great and safe country, especially for solo travellers , it is a great place to start your solo adventures! I love my country Canada, regardless the reputation it is a cold country ! So what!!! W e are a land full of natural and raw beauty !

Hi Kristin,

I love your vlog and your pictures make me want to go everywhere. I am older, hit retirement awhile back, so traveling is getting a little tougher. I don’t want to sit and wonder how long I have left to take trips and I’m not big on cruises or bus trips. I have always wanted to travel through Canada to places where there are a few people to meet and lots to see. Do you have any suggestions for someone alone who has reduced stamina but ongoing desire to see and learn.

Thank you, Mary

I really liked Manitoba’s Churchill region for the belugas and polar bears! That’s a guided tour but I really enjoyed it so much.

Canada's vast geography offers year-round travel possibilities. While Summer is great for hiking and city tours, you can also enjoy autumn's colourful foliage or spring's natural rejuvenation. Check our website to find out more about our tours.

Visa requirements for Canada vary by country. Many visitors, including the UK, require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) or a visitor visa. Always check the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines for your nationality before planning your trip.

The Canadian Dollar (CAD) is the currency used across Canada.

Spanning 3,000 miles, Canada's vast expanse is divided into multiple time zones, essential knowledge for travellers.

Toronto and Montreal: These eastern cities are 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Calgary and Banff: Located further west, both are 7 hours behind GMT.

Vancouver: On the Pacific coast, it's 8 hours behind GMT.

From April to late October, Canada observes daylight saving time, aligning with British Summer Time, keeping the time difference consistent with the UK.

What’s the food like in Canada?

Canadian cuisine, enriched by its French and English heritage, is famous for its diverse ingredients and unique dishes. The country's culinary star, maple syrup, symbolises Canada's rich natural resources, including lush meadows and abundant waterways that yield excellent meat and fish. Traditional dishes include:

Poutine: A quintessential Canadian dish, Poutine, originating from Quebec, combines crispy fries, cheese curds, and rich gravy, widely available across Canada.

Bannock: This versatile flatbread, a popular Canadian snack, comes in various shapes and is a staple in many households.

Butter Tarts: A delightful dessert featuring a flaky pastry crust filled with a creamy mixture of sugar, egg, butter, and syrup.

Tourtiere: A French-Canadian delicacy, this meat pie is filled with a hearty mix of meat, onions, and savoury seasonings.

For all months of the year, we recommend layers of clothing. This will allow for any change in weather conditions. Although most of Canada can enjoy warm summer temperatures, one waterproof top is always useful for occasional rain.

March: Moderate temperatures. Winter clothing with some medium weight clothing.

April: Milder days but the evenings are cool. Medium weight clothing including a topcoat and umbrella is recommended.

May: Warm days but cool at night. Medium weight and summer clothing recommended.

June: Warm, summer clothing with some medium weight clothing for cool evenings. The weather in June is ideal for travel and all outdoor activities.

July/August: These are the warmest months of the year. Lightweight summer clothing is recommended.

September: Warm days and cool evenings. Light- to medium weight clothing recommended.

October: Cool, with the first frost in the air.

November: Cool to frosty. Medium- to heavyweight clothing is recommended. First signs of snow.

December/January/February: Winter temperatures. Winter clothing is necessary (eg overcoat, hat, boots and gloves). Heavy snowfall in most provinces.

In the winter months it is useful to take sunglasses with you as the reflection of the snow can be a strain on the eyes. Rubber soled shoes are also recommended.

Solo Travel aboard the Ocean Endeavour

For those who prefer not to share cabins:

Aboard the Ocean Endeavour , we have a limited quantity of cabins in category 3 through to category 7 with no single supplement! Once these cabins are sold, the single supplement fee (in order to secure a cabin to yourself) is 1.5 times the berth cost.

For those who are willing to share cabins:

If you are willing to share a cabin, you may be paired up with another solo traveller. We have many past travellers who have found new friends and travel partners after sharing a cabin. If you consent to share, but we do not find you a roommate, you do not pay extra. Sharing options are available in cabin category 1 to 7 based on availability. Please contact us for more details.

Single occupancy in category 8–10 available at full double-occupancy rate; these cabins can be booked by solo travellers if the full double-occupancy rate is paid.

Excludes Antarctica.

FAQs and benefits of traveling solo with a group

Solo travel can offer you a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, gain independence, and have an adventure. Plus, going on a guided tour as a solo traveler comes with great perks—including, private rooms in handpicked hotels, local experts and a Tour Director to handle all the details, and the company of equally curious travelers to share your journey. Here are a few other compelling reasons to go solo:

  • Take the guesswork out of exploring someplace new.  Need tickets to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna? Want to dine like a true Italian at a local’s home in Rome? Wondering how to hire a boat to float down the Nile River? Our experts will help you securely and easily navigate a destination you’ve only dreamed about exploring.
  • No need to find a travel partner.  Perhaps the biggest reason people  travel solo  is not having someone with matching travel interests. Traveling solo with single travel groups opens up a whole new world of possibilities. You get to go where you want, when you want, chasing your dreams without waiting for someone to come along for the ride.
  • Enjoy adventures beyond your comfort zone.  Traveling solo isn’t just exhilarating, but easy on one of our  small-group adventure trips . You’ll find yourself learning and trying new things, from what you do (hands-on activities) to where you’ll go (roads less traveled) to how you'll get around (think outside the bus). All you need to get started is an open mind, a good pair of walking shoes, and a passion for taking the side streets.

Thanks to its mix of culture, history, natural landscapes, and centuries-old culinary traditions, Europe is an ideal destination for travelers who book solo vacation packages. Individual countries and regions of Europe also make great choices when you go solo. For the best solo travel experiences, we recommend the following:

  • Greece .  Explore the best of the Greek Islands alongside fellow solo travelers as you hop from Athens to Crete and over to Santorini.
  • Portugal .  Sampling Portugal’s signature pastel de nata, a flaky and flavorful custard tart, is much more fun when you have new friends to share in the excitement of taking that first bite.
  • Peru .  Make your way from cosmopolitan Lima to historic Cuzco to the sweeping Sacred Valley—and mystical Machu Picchu—alongside fellow solo travelers.
  • Central Europe .  Whether you’re excited to see Bavarian castles or sample Swiss chocolate, there’s no better way to tour Switzerland, Germany, and Austria than with like-minded travelers.
  • Egypt .  With fellow solo travelers by your side, you’ll decipher hieroglyphics at towering temples, stand in the shadows of the Pyramids of Giza, and take to the Nile by boat.
  • Ireland .  Green landscapes and frothy Guinness await solo travelers on the Emerald Isle, where making new friends comes naturally.
  • Thailand .  Visit an elephant sanctuary and hop between Thailand’s temples, markets, and islands with fellow solo travelers.
  • United States .  You don’t need to go international to go solo. America’s majestic  national parks  are a great choice for solo travel tours.
  • Japan .  Be dazzled by Japan’s natural beauty, rich history, and distinctive cuisine—and bond with your fellow solo travelers over hands-on activities, such as cooking classes.
  • Kenya .  Majestic wildlife, vibrant culture, and warm locals make for the ultimate mix when you join fellow solo travelers on an epic journey across Kenya.
  • Spain .  Spain charms from Catalonia to the Costa del Sol with its mix of cosmopolitan, coastal, and cultural treasures on solo travel tours.
  • Italy .  Travel solo (but never alone!) as you eat your way through Italy with fellow foodies, while taking in the classic sights and delicious cuisine.

Consider your interests, budget, and comfort level in a foreign environment. Depending on factors such as language barriers and cultural differences, some destinations may be better suited for solo trip packages than others. Research your options and read reviews from other solo travelers.

Embrace new experiences, be open to meeting new people, and step outside your comfort zone. Take time to reflect on your journey and enjoy the freedom that comes with traveling solo. Remember to take plenty of photos and keep a journal to capture your memories. And take advantage of the Tour Director and local guides who’ll accompany you during your travels. They can recommend places to eat, sights to not miss, and things to do in your free time on tour.

And there’s no easier way to find a new friend than on tour!

Solo Tours, Travel & Holidays

Travellers on the Choquequiaro Trek in Peru

Got the urge for adventure, but no one to do it with? Over 50% of travellers on our trips are travelling solo.

This is why travelling as part of our small group tours has its perks. We’ve got expert local leaders who can't wait to show you around, ready-made friends who are itching to explore (just like you), and optional single supplements if you want a room all to yourself. All you have to do is turn up with a smile and a passport: we’ll handle the rest.

All our group trips are perfectly suited to those of you travelling solo, but here are a few favourites as rated by our previous solo travellers.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

When you’re all by yourself, it’s easy to fall into the typical tourist traps. You wander within a few blocks of your hotel, see a few of the big sights and that’s about it. But solo travel on a group tour isn’t like that. Each of our trips has an expert local leader who knows every backstreet bar, cool tapas joint and hidden gallery. They’ll give you tips for your free time exploring, and introduce you to locals.

Go solo, but not alone. That’s our motto. The average Intrepid Travel trip has about ten people on it – people of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world. It’s like a hostel dorm room that travels with you (minus the smell and the weird naked guy). You’ve got ready-made friends for a karaoke session in Vietnam, a canoeing adventure in New Zealand or a chat over chai at the breakfast table. For a solo traveller, it’s a nice perk to have.

We’ve spent the better part of 30 years honing our itineraries, getting rid of the dodgy hotels and keeping the good ones, picking the best restaurants to visit, and organising public transport and all the other logistics of travel so you don’t have to worry. Travelling alone can often be a) confusing and b) complicated. But with us, all you need is a good attitude – we’ll take care of the rest.

Our leaders know the areas of town to avoid after dark. They know how to haggle at markets, avoid pickpockets and scammers and generally have a good time without anything going wrong. And don’t forget, when you're a single traveller on a group tour, you’re in a group! You’ll have a bunch of new friends to watch your back (and your stuff). It’s all the flexibility and freedom of independent travel, but without the risks.

Will I have my own room?

It’s completely up to you. On our trips rooming is organised on a twin-share basis and we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and travelling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the  travel style  - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I have to pay for an individual room?

Not if you don’t want to. If you’re happy to bunk with a traveller of the same gender – paired up as per the gender marker on each of their passports – there’s nothing extra to pay on the vast majority of our trips. If you want your own room, just mention it to our customer service team when booking and they can organise an individual room for a small charge.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

I'm new to group travel, what will my group be like?

Intrepid travellers  are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and a lot of them elect to travel alone (so no third-wheeling, we promise). Our trips attract a mix of genders and ages generally range from 25 to 65. It’s hard to know exactly who you’ll meet, but you can be assured you'll be a part of the fun.

Is it cheaper to travel in a group?

On average, solo travel on a  group tour  is way more cost-effective than heading out on your own as you're splitting the cost (we can also guarantee a lot more inclusions and extras than you’d usually get for your money).

Can I tailor the trip to me?

We have a range of trip styles –  Basix, Original and Comfort  – that offer different levels of flexibility and free time. While there’s always a set itinerary for the group, our Basix trips tend to have less included activities and more time to do your own thing, Original trips have a 50/50 balance, and our Comfort trips have more included activities. Lots of our travellers choose to travel on their own, so it’s common for people to want different things from their experience. Be sure to chat to your  leader ; they can recommend places to explore during free time or things to try after the trip has finished.

It pays to learn a little bit of the local language wherever you go and you should always consider the country’s dress code when picking out what to wear. In many places, you maybe be expected to dress modestly and cover up exposed skin so consider packing a sarong or light scarf to cover exposed shoulders, along with a long skirt or trousers. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s respectful (and smart) to follow the local style.

When you’re out and about being all adventure-y, just keep an eye on the sunset. Try to avoid catching public transport after dark when you’re on your own, especially if you’re carrying your suitcase/backpack/fancy camera/map (it kind of screams ‘tourist’). Travelling with a group is a smart move for any traveller; it’s always good to have people around who’ve got your back.

Social media may be the doom of mankind and rational thought as we know it, but it can be useful, even as a safety tool. Your friends and family are now privy to a minute-by-minute update of your whereabouts, regardless of where you are in the world. Before you leave home, give your friends/family a social media heads-up: ‘If I don’t post a sunset selfie for five days straight, get in touch and see if I’m okay.’

Share your itinerary

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people travelling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're travelling with us, we can help you organise an  arrival transfer.  Read your maps before you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewellery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.

Fare's fair

Solo travellers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate before you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small  Intrepid group  of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

Our 7 fave tour companies for singles in their 20s and 30s

These tour companies bring together younger travelers on adventures around the world..

Beth Luberecki

Review: EF Go Ahead’s Food & Wine: Piedmont & Tuscany with America’s Test Kitchen

Millennials and Gen Zers go big on experiences like travel, and many travelers in their 20s and 30s are borrowing a tried-and-true strategy from older generations by booking multi-day guided tours as a way to maximize adventures, simplify planning, and meet like-minded people on trips from tour companies that focus on younger travelers.

According to a recent survey by GetYourGuide , 42% of Millennial leisure travelers and 40% of Gen Z travelers booked a guided tour in the past year, and 81% of Millennials and 80% of Gen Zers say they’re likely to book a guided tour in the next year. It’s an especially appealing option for young solo travelers, who can safely experience the world in the company of new friends and knowledgeable tour guides.

So if you’re a traveler in your 20s or 30s, whether you’re traveling with a friend, a partner, or solo, read on for my list of the best singles guided tour companies for travelers like you.

two young travelers on a Contiki tour in Delhi looking out of a tuk tuk

The Contiki focus is on travel tours for ages 18 to 35, so young travelers will be exclusively among their peers. The company offers 200+ itineraries in more than 60 countries on six continents. Itineraries range from long weekends to trips up to 60 days long, and travel styles include active and adventure trips, sailing and cruise tours, and small-group tours. All on-trip transportation and accommodations, plus most meals and activities, are included on tours.

Almost 60% of U.S. Contiki travelers join tours solo, and itineraries are built to encourage travelers to be social with each other. Many guests make lifelong friendships on trips and even participate in Contiki’s reunion tours once they age out.

OUR FAVES: 10 best Contiki tours

Sustainability is a big focus for the company, which made all its trips carbon neutral in 2022 and is now working to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire business by 2050. Almost every itinerary has at least one “Make Travel Matter” experience to help travelers give back to the people and places they visit, experiences like meeting rescued baby elephants in Kenya or visiting indigenous communities in Ecuador.

Popular tours include the eight-day Thai Island Hopper West trip, the Ireland in a Week tour, and the eight-day Egypt and the Nile adventure. Contiki offers lots of flexibility for young, budget-conscious travelers, like the ability to pay in as many installments as you’d like as long as the trip balance is paid in full 60 days before departure. If plans change and it’s more than 60 days before the departure date, travelers can use their original deposit toward a future Contiki trip without any penalties.

2. EF Ultimate Break

two young people in Japan on an EF Ultimate Break tour

Founded in 2016, EF Ultimate Break focuses exclusively on trips for young adults ages 18 to 35. The company offers more than 140 different trips across six continents ranging from six to 60 days. Tours include multi-country, hiking, city-focused, and theme-based trips, with plenty of budget-friendly options available like the company’s Essential trips. Frequent deals and promotions help make tours even more affordable for Millennials and Gen Zers interested in seeing the world.

Many of the company’s customers are solo travelers , and itineraries are designed to foster connections and bring travelers together. Booking an EF Ultimate Break trip also gives solo travelers the safety and security that comes with a group tour, plus airport transfers and EF’s global support network that’s available 24/7 before, during, and after a trip.

SOLO BUT NOT ALONE: 10 best guided tours for solo travelers

Popular itineraries include the nine-day Japan: Tokyo & Beyond trip, an 11-day Greek Islands excursion, and the 10-day Germany, Italy & Switzerland tour. Trips include accommodations at boutique hostels or hotels depending on tour type, on-trip transportation, tour directors, free breakfast each morning, welcome and farewell dinners, and pre-arranged excursions and optional add-on activities. The company offers flexible payment plans that include the options to set up automatic payments or to pay at your own pace up to 99 days before departure.

3. Intrepid Travel

Young travelers on Intrepid Travel's 18 to 35s trip to Thailand, watching a local prepare rice in Krabi

Intrepid Travel has been a leader in responsible travel for 35 years. In 2018, it became the world’s largest travel company to achieve B Corp certification, and it strives to create positive change through immersive and impactful travel.

Intrepid has offered young adult travel trips for ages 18 to 29, but in 2024 the company expanded the age range up to 35 to better serve the next generation of travelers. The company’s 18 to 35s itineraries are specifically designed with Millennials and Gen Zers in mind, taking into account the fact that they’re curious, climate-conscious, and culturally connected. That means lots of local immersion, plenty of free time, opportunities for adventure and time spent in nature, and regional specific food experiences, along with nightlife, photo ops, and unique accommodations when possible.

With an average group size of 10 and led by local tour leaders, these trips are welcome environments for solo travelers. In fact, Intrepid’s highest volume demographic of solo travelers in 2024 was 21- to 30-year-olds, and the 18 to 35s itineraries are one of the company’s top trip categories booked by solo travelers. Popular 18 to 35s trips include the 15-day Real Central Europe tour, the Six Days in Iceland excursion, and the 12-day Essential Morocco trip, and the company’s newest offerings for this age group include the nine-day Essential South Korea tour and the One Week in Costa Rica trip.

4. G Adventures

G Adventures young tour guests at Khao Sok National Park tubing in the water

G Adventures is known for action-packed small group trips with a guiding principle of responsible travel. Social, environmental, and ethical factors are taken into consideration when tours are designed to make sure they have a positive impact on the places visited, and each tour is given a Ripple Score to show how much money stays in the local economy.

The company operates more than 750 trips in more than 100 different countries, including a range of 18-to-Thirtysomethings Tours that are faster paced for younger people and priced affordably for travelers just starting out in their careers. Tours feature stops at cultural sights and attractions during the day, bar and restaurant visits at night (including a “First Night Out” at a local hot spot and a “Big Night Out” toward the end of the trip), and plenty of downtime for exploring at your own pace. Young solo travelers who take these tours get the safety that comes with traveling in a group and the chance to meet new friends from all over the world.

TOP PICKS: Best G Adventure tours this year and next

Tours of Europe and Southeast Asia are popular with G Adventures travelers in their 20s and 30s. Top sellers in the 18-to-Thirtysomethings collection of tours include the seven-day Paris to Rome: Picnics & Pizza tour, 15-day Thailand: Night Markets & Blue Waters trip, and 15-day Southern Africa Encompassed: Bush Camps & Wildlife Spotting tour.

FTLO safari tour for younger adults watching an elephant in the wild

FTLO isn’t your grandparents’ travel tour operator. The company takes a modern approach to creating trips for young professionals in their mid-to-late 20s and 30s, offering dozens of itineraries around the world that range from explorations of single regions to multi-country excursions. FTLO expects to run more than 250 trips in 2024, with more than 300 planned for 2025, including some new itineraries.

The company takes care of all the details and logistics so that young travelers can focus on exploring their destinations and connecting with other tourgoers. Trips include boutique accommodations, many meals, in-country transportation, scheduled activities, free time recommendations, and an experienced trip leader. Tours and activities are specifically designed for the people in their 20s and 30s, many of whom travel on these trips solo. According to FTLO, this makes its tour participants especially open to connection and friendship, and many participants even meet up after the trips and plan their own future adventures together.

WOMEN TRAVELING TOGETHER: 9 travel companies that specialize in women’s-only tours

FTLO recently launched its eight-day Brazil itinerary, which includes a traditional samba class, a Rio food and drink walking tour, a cigar factory tour and rolling experience, and an Ipanema beach day. Other popular trips include a 10-day Bali adventure, an 11-day South Africa safari, and a nine-day tour of the Greek Islands .

6. REI Adventures

Woman wearing a backpack walking along a rugged stretch of Northern California coast on REI California Wine Country Women's Hiking Napa & Sonoma

If you’re looking to explore the great outdoors in North America, you won’t go wrong with a tour from REI Adventures . The fully hosted, small group trips include lodging (camping or hotel or lodge stays, depending on the tour), on-trip transportation, meals, guides, permits, and some gear. Each itinerary includes a packing list for travelers detailing what’s included; paddling trips, for example, include gear like flotation devices, dry bags, paddles, and kayaks or standup paddleboards. Trips are ranked by intensity level, from easy active to high intensity.

TIPPING TIPS: How much should you tip on a guided tour?

The company offers trips designed specifically for 18- to 35-year-olds that explore spots like the Yosemite Valley and Great Smoky Mountains in a more affordable and more flexible way. But younger travelers can also participate in any of the 150 REI Adventures itineraries, and any departure can become a private trip with just six people.

Solo travelers make up about 46% of the company’s guests, a number that’s been consistent over the past few years. REI’s Women’s Adventures led by women guides are particularly popular with solo travelers and include trips like a four-day Sedona, Arizona hiking excursion and a three-day Bryce Canyon easy active hiking and camping excursion. New trips launched recently include a California wine country women’s hiking trip and an Asheville-area backpacking trip , and REI has 13 more itineraries are slated to launch by the end of 2024 to destinations, including Acadia and the Oregon Coast.

7. Koda Sail

Koda Sail tour group posing

Koda Sail offers small-ship tours of Croatia, Turkey, and the Maldives designed for young professionals in their mid-20s to late 30s. That means things like spacious air-conditioned cabins with private en-suites and a local chef on board preparing meals. Tours include swim stops and free time when docked in town. Trip leaders offer recommendations on what to see and do, and there are sometimes organized excursions. Dinner and happy hour take place on the boat, and then guests can head back into port to experience the local nightlife.

SAIL AWAY: Dreamiest European river cruises

Tourgoers come from all over the world, with 30% from the U.S., 50% from Australia, and the rest from places like New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, and Singapore. More than 60% of the guests are female, and 33% are solo travelers. Taking part in a trip with like-minded peers with similar travel styles tends to make it easier for solo travelers to get on board, and Koda Sail even offers tips for solo travelers to help them break the ice.

And if being on the water isn’t your thing, the company’s newest tour offering is actually on dry land. The 10-night Africa trip travels from Zimbabwe to Botswana and includes a four-night private safari in the Okavango Delta, whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River, and a tour of Victoria Falls.
