The first known settlement of Norfolk Island dates from around 1000-1500AD. Polynesian wayfarers made the island their home and settled in Kingston where they remained for many years. Why they chose to leave is a mystery, but their presence did not vanish over time and was noted centuries later when the first British settlers arrived in 1788 only weeks after the First Fleet arrived in Sydney.

New South Wales Governor Arthur Phillip sent a party east on HMAT Supply , led by Philip Gidley King, to settle the island and secure its natural resources. Their arrival on the 6th of March 1788 began a period of 25 years of settlement. In 1814 the buildings of that settlement were set ablaze and the British deserted the island where it would remain uninhabited by humans for the next decade.

In 1825 a decision was made by the British to re-settle the island beginning a brutal penal era that would last for 30 years. Much of the Kingston you see today was built during the second colonial settlement period, though in many cases it was built on the footprint of the first colonial settlement buildings in the township area. At the end of the penal era the island was handed over to the incoming Pitcairn Islanders in 1856 who remain today.

Collectively, the remnants of those early settlements leave a beautiful yet often-times haunting snapshot of 18th and 19th century Kingston. This magnificent area of significance is now a living World Heritage listed site largely untouched by modern development, and its layers upon layers of history offer a wonderful insight into the island’s past.

On Pinetree Tours’ in-depth tour of this World Heritage settlement area their expert guides take you beyond the surface of Kingston and peel back some of its many layers of history to share the area’s secrets and bring it to life.

Explore the New Gaol ruins, the Pier Store, Boat Shed, and Crank Mill, all of which offer a glimpse into the island’s intriguing past and experience first-hand the incredible history of this unique location. Their knowledgeable guides Max, John and Ngaire simply love to share their insights and stories about this captivating place and impart their knowledge to immerse you in the site’s fascinating history.

Pinetree Tours will take you on a journey through this living showcase of Polynesian, convict, and Pitcairn Islander history. You’ll discover the stories behind the colonial headstones in the cemetery and the beautiful historic houses on Quality Row and come away with a deeper appreciation of Kingston’s many stories. And to top off your tour, you’ll enjoy a lovely afternoon tea!

Pinetree Tours have been operating for over 40 years and while their tours range from the fun and frivolous to the more historically centred outings like the Convict Settlement Tour, they are always based on a deep understanding of Norfolk’s history and preserving and sharing its precious and unique stories – It’s what makes them so special. • V7776RNjamess 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Meal, Great Ghost Lantern Tour of Historical Kingston! So get on a bus at hotel (Seaside), then drive down the road to Kingston. At number 9 Quality Row, we get out, We are greeted by a ghost chicken. Then an old lady ghost comes out and tells us to follow her. Incidentally at end of the tour we drop her off at the cemetery where we learn where her grave is if we want to visit and that she is 24 years old. The actress does an amazing job though throughout the dinner and tour but you are left wondering, surely they could have found a closer to 24 years of age actress, a surely ghosts don't age, and if they did wouldn't she be in skeleton form now. The ghost has to do some waitering. The cost of living in a graveyard is not cheap you know. The entree was garlic toast. Not only was it delicious but the ghost had ensured we would be safe from vampires that night (she didn't tell us this, I just surmised it). Main course - corned silverside with white sauce on it with three potatoes, some lettuce, cucumber and the ghost's idea of a practical joke, the most disgusting food on the planet, onions. It was very nice, and honestly as good as anything else I ate on the island. The ghost had to clear plates away between courses too. To finish off our meal she bought out chocolate lava cake, with chocolate topping, cream and blueberries, also yummy! Then we got back on what the ghost called a horseless carriage and left No. 9 Quality Row. Then we get on and off a few times (we're given lanterns) around the historic ruins of Kingston, such as the hospital (the bus driver plays the doctor),and end up at the most haunted house in Australia and I think third in the world. We sit out back in the servant's quarters and the ghost tells us some stuff. The night was a lot of fun and very informative. Plus a great way to see Kingston after dark. I'll provide this info here too as I couldn't find it anywhere and I wanted to know before I booked. Other than the meal part, are there any other differences between this Ghost tour and a rival company's Lantern Lit Ghost Tour being this one was $95 and theirs' $45? First I'll say, I did do both tours and they are both worth doing. Main differences - Lantern Lit G T goes into the cemetery. The guide on that one (dressed in a clock and talks like The Count of Sesame Street at times) does actually mention the ghost from Pinetree's tour while there. You also visit Colleen Mccullogh's grave and a few others. Lantern Lit G T visits both houses in the duplex that is the most haunted house in Australia. But honestly you're not missing much in the right duplex as it is all ruins inside. Unless you encounter something in there, which one old lady did (felt a presence) and returned to sit in the bus. The lanterns on Ghost Dinner are better producing light wise than on Lantern Lit G T, there's look more authentic to the era though. The guide does have a better one though so you can see her when she is talking or to follow her, So you do get better photos on the Dinner one. Although it's still dark and only lantern light so they are still limited. Lantern Lit G T doesn't go to the well beside the duplex for safety reasons due to their lack of lantern light (hey, I asked). Ghost Dinner has more stops to explore with the lanterns in Kingston than Lantern Lit G T does. However Lantern Lit does instead of just going down Taylor's Road like Ghost Dinner bus does, goes via Queen Elizabeth Ave, Collins Head Road, Rooty Hill Road and does stop at times to talk about non and convict era ghosts on the way to Kingston, such as an old lady hitchhiker. Lantern Lit stops in the Kingston Pier area where shots of Port (or grape juice if you prefer) along with chocolates with orange in them are passed around. Lantern Lit jumps between being a more serious ghosts are real experience to the host telling lame dad jokes such as "we're about to cross to the other side (pause) of the road." Where as Ghost Dinner is more like it's a show. Ghost Dinner is better, but remember you're paying $50 more. But I would highly recommend doing both. There's actually another called Twilight Ghost Tour Norfolk Island History and Genealogy as well, I didn't do that one but from what I could read up on it (like all these tours there isn't much info) they use instruments to try and find ghosts. Besides three with Ghost Tour in the title, Pinetree's Sound and Light Tour is narrated by various ghosts as you sit in a bus and are driven around Kingston at night while the bus lights up various buildings and actors re-enact the past as the ghosts tell the story. I did that one and can recommend it. I didn't do 1856 the Untold Story but it also seems to be a similar concept. Read more Written 19 March 2024

  • Larso1 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Pinetree Tours Ghost Tour & Dinner We went with Pinetree Tours Ghost Tour & Dinner, hosted by the ghost of Elizabeth White Robertson, who died 11th January 1847. The tour left by bus from Pinetree's depot in Burnt Pine and our meal was eaten in the servant's quarters at one of the houses in Quality Row. After the meal, the bus took us back towards the wharf at Kingston Pier, where we visited the ruins of the hospital and surgeons' quarters before going back to No. 2 Quality Row to visit the ruins of the Civil Officer's Quarters. Lots of ghost stories were recounted along the way. Read more Written 13 March 2024
  • Larso1 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fish Fry is amazing! We went on the organised Fish Fry tour with Pinetree Tours but made our own way to "Orn Da Cliff" by car because we had our own transport. The meal was excellent, and the venue is great, all undercover, but they also have an outdoor venue as well. Great entertainment by Trent, a local, but originally from Pitcairn Island, plus they had some local girls doing traditional Tahitian dancing. The site is at the top of the cliff, as the venue title suggests, and you will see amazing views and sunsets from there. Thoroughly recommend! Read more Written 12 March 2024

  • Fritzi1605 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Progressive dinner recommended but with a few adjustments I love the idea of the local community opening their doors to share home-cooked meals with visitors. It's a generous gesture for the benefit of both. However, whilst our experience was mostly okay I would like suggest a few prospective improvements. Firstly, it would be good to have drinking water available with the main meal. The wine and juice were appreciated but carafes of water would be a good addition. Secondly, I would recommend that insect repellent be provided where there are lots of mosquitoes (or alert people beforehand to bring their own). We were on the island for a week (and came equipped with repellent) but were only attacked once during that time and it was at the home in which we had dessert. I suspect that there may have been water nearby. Thirdly, while it was interesting to hear the grandfather of the host of the main meal talk about his whaling experience the talk could be curated to remove some of the gory details, and to minimise the memory lapses that the dear gentleman suffered. The host should have provided some assistance during these lapses. Having said all of that, none of these matters are deal breakers and can easily be addressed. I still recommend the experience. The meal, comprised of fresh trumpeter, a range of salads and some local culinary specialties (offering optional seconds and thirds) was very tasty. Equally enjoyable was the music and narrative provided by Pitcairn local, Trent Christian and the traditional performances by the talented Bounty Beauties.
