Historic Tours of Flagler College showcase the architectural heritage and fascinating history of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a nationally designated historic landmark that Henry Flagler built in 1887. Millionaire industrialist and developer, Henry M. Flagler, wanted to create an American Riviera in St. Augustine. His Hotel Ponce de Leon, now Flagler College, beautifully recaptures the architectural spirit of old Europe.

During its heyday, presidents, dignitaries, royalty, and members of society's upper crust walked the halls of the magnificent Hotel Ponce de Leon. Designed for entertainment, relaxation, and grandeur, Flagler's hotel incorporated all of the period's modern conveniences of that time, including electricity, running water, and a Thomas Edison clock — one of the first to be used in a public space.

The Ponce de Leon also contains the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows, with more than 79 windows decorating the dining hall, which is included on the tour.

Renovation Update

In March of 2024, Flagler College began renovations that impacted parts of the tour experience. There were no tours during the summer of 2024. Now Flagler Legacy Tours will offer limited tours, starting in September. The tours will include the courtyard, the grand lobby, and the dining room with the 79 Tiffany stained glass windows.

The Flagler Room, originally the grand parlor of the historic Hotel Ponce de Leon, will be temporarily closed through August, 2025.

Henry Flagler gained his fortune in the grain industry and then partnered with John D. Rockefeller to start Standard Oil. In the late 1800s, Henry Flagler came to St. Augustine with his first wife to help with her ailing health. When Henry arrived, he saw great potential in the small town of St. Augustine. He extended the railroad from Jacksonville to St. Augustine and started to build luxury hotels. The first of which was the Hotel Ponce de Leon, the playground for the rich and famous of the time.

In 1885, construction started at the Hotel Ponce de Leon and finished in just 18 months. The Ponce officially opened on January 12, 1888. It was a seasonal hotel opening only from January to Easter. There were approximately 450 hotel rooms, and it cost $4,000 to stay for the entire season. Guests were required to pay to stay for the entire season, whether they stayed that long or not.

In 1968, the former Hotel Ponce de Leon opened as the centerpiece of Flagler College. More information about the Hotel Ponce de Leon can be found in Hotel Ponce de Leon: The rise, fall, and rebirth of Flagler’s Gilded Age Palace by Dr. Leslee Keys. (If you wish to buy a copy for yourself, please follow this link: shop.flagler.edu )

Flagler College Courtyard

Construction on the Hotel Ponce de Leon started in 1885 when Henry Flagler hired two young architects, fresh out of college, to design his building. Their names were John Carrère and Thomas Hastings. The Ponce was the very first public building worked on together. The construction of the Ponce was built in a revolutionary manner of poured concrete. It also boasted state of the art amenities for the late 1800s- which included running water and electricity. The fountain located at the center of the courtyard is not only beautiful but also functional- it was used to aerate water for hotel guests. If you look to the sky, the Ponce’s prominent towers once held thousands of gallons of water; today, these towers now celebrate the top of each hour with a different instrumental song.

The Rotunda is an opulent lobby greeting all guests when arriving at the Ponce. Materials featured in the lobby include Numidian pink marble wainscoting, oak wainscoting and woodwork, and Italian mosaic tile floors. The Rotunda’s most defining feature is the octagonal inset central dome, framed by eight carved oak caryatids. Henry Flagler spared no expense for the details of his beautiful luxury hotel, featuring murals by George W. Maynard, electric lights wired by Thomas Edison, and detailed woodwork supervised by Bernhardt Maybeck.

Above the lobby and immediately under the Rotunda’s dome is the 400 Rotunda, now called the Solarium. The Solarium is a rectangular space of 2,500 square feet. When first opened, this space was used as childcare for guests. Once it was realized that the room was underutilized, childcare was moved to the ground floor, and this space was converted into lounge space. Hotel guests would take advantage of the 360 views of the city of St. Augustine available from the two roof terraces. In 2013, a complete renovation of the Solarium was completed for the 450th birthday of the City of St. Augustine.

Dining Hall

Considered the most remarkable room, the Hotel Ponce de Leon’s Dining Room is 14,212 square feet with a forty-eight-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling and includes semicircular east and west venidos. The Dining Room once held 300 seated guests; each table having their own waiter for the duration of their stay. In this room, there are forty Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows, featuring clear and colored glass in geometric patterns and filigree designs. Also, the barrel-vaulted ceiling features additional allegorical females and murals by George W. Maynard. Famous guests of the Hotel Ponce de Leon Dining Room included John D Rockefeller Jr., John Jacob Astor, and Presidents Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, and Lyndon B. Johnson.

Flagler Room

To the west of the Rotunda, through a pair of carved oak doors, leads to the delicate and elaborately painted Grand Parlor (now the Flagler Room). Initially planned as a pleasant refuge for ladies staying at the Ponce, the delicate French Renaissance décor departs from the Spanish themes employed throughout the rest of the building, decorated with many of original artifacts from the Hotel Ponce de Leon, including furniture that may have come from Pottier & Stymus of New York. The Steinway piano in the Flagler Room pays homage to the original Henry Flagler purchased for the Parlor that guests or a member of the hotel orchestra might have played from time to time.

Travel Guides

Touring flagler’s legacy in st. augustine.

You don’t have to be an aspiring college student to tour what The Princeton Review calls “one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States.”

Daily public tours of Flagler College in St. Augustine highlight the architectural heritage of the erstwhile Hotel Ponce de Leon, a former luxury tourist attraction now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and part of the school’s campus.

Built by millionaire developer Henry Flagler in 1888, the luxury hotel is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and houses the largest collection of in-use Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows.

Guests begin their tour by exploring the courtyard while learning of the hotel's Spanish Renaissance architecture and of the techniques and innovations used to construct Henry Flagler's vision.

Next is the grand lobby where you can stare up into an 80-foot domed ceiling supported by eight ornate oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, each slightly different from the next.

The tour continues into the dining room where 79 Louis Comfort Tiffany Stained Glass windows stream light onto hand-painted murals on the walls and ceiling.

Visitors also spend time in the Flagler Room, formally the Women's Grand Parlor, decorated with hand-crafted Austrian crystal chandeliers, a Thomas Edison clock containing the largest piece of intact white onyx in the western hemisphere, original hotel furniture and art, as well as personal photos and mementos from Henry Flagler and his family.

Located at 74 King St., tours depart from the Rotunda at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They cost $10 for adults; $8 for seniors ages 60 and up and active military personnel; $1 for children ages 4-12, and free for children under 4 years.

The centerpiece of the school’s 19-acre campus is the former Ponce de Leon Hotel, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The hotel was known for its opulent setting and luxurious amenities. Many millions of dollars have been spent renovating and restoring the historic buildings, and visitors as well as students spend many hours just enjoying the ambiance.

Today more than 2,000 students come to engage in educational pursuits ranging from the fine arts to accounting and business and many in between.

The Exquisite Ponce de Leon Hotel

Henry Flagler, co-founder of Standard Oil, envisioned St. Augustine as an American Riviera. In that spirit, he built the ornate Ponce de Leon Hotel on land that was once an orange grove. Capturing the essence of Old Europe, the Spanish Revival-style building adorned with Moorish Revival architectural elements was designed by John Carrere and Thomas Hastings. The construction began in 1885 and ended in 1887. The building was the first major structure in the country to have a poured concrete foundation. The hotel also had steam heat. The grandeur of the building would influence architecture in southern Florida for the next half-century.

fountain & exterior of building at flagler college in st augustine

An artists’ colony was established when Flagler erected studios at the rear of the hotel. The studios attracted prominent artists, including Martin Johnson Heade, Felix de Crano and Reynolds Beal. During the Depression, the federal government sponsored arts programs at the property that were attended by Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.

World War II Training Center and College

One of the few Flagler hotels to survive the Great Depression, the property was commandeered by the U.S. Coast Guard during the Second World War for use as a training center. The hotel and city are considered the birthplace of the Coast Guard Reserve. Several thousand recruits received their training here, including the celebrated African-American artist Jacob Lawrence. He would later serve on the USCGC Sea Cloud , the first integrated ship in naval service. The twin towers were originally storage tanks designed to supply the hotel with running water. One of the towers was converted and used as a brig by the Coast Guard. During the early Civil Rights Movement, the hotel dining room was the scene for a 1964 sit-in, the first major demonstration in St. Augustine. Four years later, the hotel would become the showpiece of the newly established Flagler College. The school would spend millions of dollars restoring the building to its original glory. The historic hotel, now a dormitory for female students, is open for public tours.

Travel Back in Time

Historic Tours of Flagler College highlight the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, listed as a National Historic Landmark.

A tour of the college enables you to journey back to the Gilded Age and experience an opulent turn-of-the-century hotel. Reservations are not required, but you should arrive at least 20 minutes before one of the scheduled twice-daily tours, which are led by student guides. These tours highlight the architectural heritage of this designated national landmark.

Guests will begin their tour by exploring the courtyard while learning of the hotel’s Spanish Renaissance architecture and of the techniques and innovations used to construct Henry Flagler’s vision.   Next is the grand lobby and rotunda where they will look up into a 86-foot domed ceiling supported by eight oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, each slightly different from the next; these  figures are copies of those in the temple of Diana in Greece. The Rotunda features an intricate mosaic floor and walls adorned with elaborate paintings and murals by George Maynard.  Guests will move on to the dining room where the stained glass windows stream light onto the beautifully hand painted murals on the walls and ceilings.   Finally, they will visit the Flagler Room, formerly the Women’s Grand Parlor, where they will gaze upon hand crafted Austrian crystal chandeliers, a clock containing the largest piece of intact white onyx in the western hemisphere and crafted by Thomas Edison , original hotel furniture and art,  magnificent wall panels, detailed plaster carvings  as well as personal photos and mementos from Henry Flagler and his family.

The school also offers a special tour of the Solarium on Saturdays and Sundays during June and July. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the fourth-floor parlor over the Rotunda offer magnificent panoramic views of St. Augustine. Tickets for the tour can be purchased at Flagler’s Legacy Gifts on St. George Street or in the lobby gift shop. The admission fee is $10 for adults. The college offers discounts for children, senior citizens and military personnel.

Things to Know Before You Go

Boasting a history stretching back almost 500 years and warm, sunny weather, St. Augustine is a prime vacation destination. The most popular time to visit this pedestrian-friendly city is the end of February until the beginning of June which is also when the weather is most pleasant. While the summer can be sultry and often features brief afternoon thunderstorms, the temperatures during the fall and winter months can drop suddenly due to a cold snap. Be sure to dress in layers during the cooler months of the year, which is also the dry season. Weekends are usually more crowded than weekdays.

The streets of downtown St. Augustine are narrow and can be congested with cars. There is also limited parking. The best way to reach Flagler College is the Old Town Trolley. You can avoid the frustration of driving in congested city traffic and trying to find a place to park. On an Old Town Trolley Tour, you can sit back and relax as you hear a fun and informative story about the many points of interest that you will pass along the way. Step off the trolley and visit this historic landmark at your leisure. When you are ready, you can climb back aboard the next trolley. One comes along every few minutes. The Old Town Trolley is a safe, affordable and convenient way to see the best that St. Augustine has to offer.

Get MORE out of your summer in St. Augustine aboard the iconic Old Town Trolley and see the best first!
