Five things to know: Castle Pines Golf Club

PGA TOUR returns to mile-high course for this week’s BMW Championship

Change Text Size

The top 50 in the FedExCup arrive at this week’s BMW Championship knowing that their spots in next year’s Signature Events are secure. Now they have their sights on the 30 spots in the TOUR Championship and the opportunity to claim the PGA TOUR’s season-long prize.

The BMW is returning to Colorado for the first time in a decade, after previously being played at nearby Cherry Hills in 2014. Castle Pines Golf Club is returning to the PGA TOUR schedule for the first time since 2006 after a two-decade run hosting The International, a Stableford event that featured winners like Ernie Els, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, David Toms, Jose Maria Olazabal and Phil Mickelson.

This week’s field will need to make a quick adjustment to Colorado’s altitude after competing last week in the heat and humidity of Memphis, Tennessee. To get you prepared, here are five things to know about Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado:

1. Familiar venue

Castle Pines GC is one of the most coveted addresses, golf or otherwise, in the Denver-metro area, and one of the most prominent and luxurious real estate golf developments in the country. Located just 27 miles due south of downtown Denver, Castle Pines hosted The International, a modified Stableford event on the PGA TOUR, from 1986 to 2006.

The BMW Championship, which traces its lineage to the Western Open in 1922, returns to the Denver area for the first time since 2014, when Billy Horschel won at Cherry Hills Country Club. The Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholars Foundation is the tournament’s chief charitable beneficiary.

Former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning made a hole-in-one in his first round as a Castle Pines member. John Elway also is a member at the club that boasts on its website to offer “the best day of golf in America.”

2. Augusta in the mountains

Castle Pines ranks among the best of Nicklaus Design’s approximately 400 projects. Dense ponderosa pines frame holes set into the rolling terrain of the Rocky Mountain Front Range. The course makes use of 325 feet of elevation change, with platform tees that showcase the landing areas in the foreground and the dramatic, towering landscape in the background. Few courses offer such theater, with long views of both the course and the scenic Mountain West.

It's often said that given the choice between a good owner and a good piece of land, an architect would opt for the good client. At Castle Pines, Nicklaus had both. Jack Vickers, who made his money in the oil and gas business, was the developer of Castle Pines.

He moved to Denver in 1969 and was driving around his new hometown when he stumbled across the land that would become Castle Pines. On a whim, he turned down Happy Canyon Road, according to the club’s history. He stopped halfway up the drive, hiked to the top of a rocky ridge and discovered a panoramic view of the mountainous terrain.

It took him 12 years to acquire the property from the various landowners. As the Denver metro area spread south, the roads and services arrived for a high-end housing development.

With the land acquired, he turned to Jack Nicklaus to design his new course. Vickers and Nicklaus toured the land both by foot and helicopter, joking that though they rarely agreed, they were able to produce one of the best courses in the country. Construction began in 1979 and Castle Pines Golf Club officially opened to instant acclaim in October 1981.

Its ponds, flowery gardens and carefully crafted views evoke the spirit of the kind of place Vickers set out to create – a western version of Augusta National.

From the high point of the first tee looking south, the opening three holes take you steadily downward, 300 feet in all. From there, the course turns uphill to form a neat symmetry of nines: the front looping counterclockwise, the back clockwise. For all of the topography it covers, the elevation changes take place gradually, allowing the course to be very walkable and amenable to one of the largest caddie programs in the Mountain West.

3. Thin air thickens the plot

At an average altitude of 6,200 feet, the ball flies a lot farther at Castle Pines than at sea level. You’ll hear many say that the increased altitude adds 10% to the distance of shots, based on a general ratio that states that the thin air adds 1.7% of distance per 1,000 feet of elevation. Myriad other factors impact a shot’s distance, however, especially at altitude. They include a player’s launch angle, the loft of the club and the heat and humidity levels.

But the general rule says that a 300-yard drive at sea level travels 332 yards at Castle Pines and a stock 7-iron shot of 180 yards goes nearly 200. In other words, it’s about a club-and-a-half difference from sea level. Add in the dramatic elevation changes at Castle Pines, and caddies will have their hands full this week.

Castle Pines will be the longest course in PGA TOUR history, measuring 8,130 yards. While it’s an eye-popping number, it’s worth remembering that it’s approximately equivalent to 7,350 yards at sea level. That’s fairly standard for the PGA TOUR. For the amateurs, Castle Pines plays to a 79.1 rating and 155 slope, meaning even your scratch handicap would have trouble breaking 80 there in everyday conditions, let alone when the course is primed for PGA TOUR competition.

The first hole provides the perfect example of how the scorecard can be deceiving. It’s listed as a 659-yard par 5, but it should be reachable for much of the field. It’s the equivalent of a 599-yard hole at sea level, and that doesn’t factor in the 100-foot drop from tee to green.

4. Three holes to watch

Every hole counts the same, of course, but three in particular merit close watching at Castle Pines:

No. 4: 254 yards, par 3

  • At a low point of the property and in the southwest corner of the routing, this elegant hole requires a controlled, left-to-right tee shot into a green flanked on the right by a steep barranca. The tee sits 30 feet above the green, offering a great view of both the putting surface and the distant mountains. A left or right miss to this fairly narrow green will mean trouble – there are two bunkers on either side of the green, plus that steep-faced wash on the right. A new back tee has been installed left of the old one, and this brings the danger right of the green even more into play than before.

No. 14: 655 yards, par 5

  • Along the long par-5 opening hole, this one plays downhill, with a 100-foot drop from tee to green, making it reachable in two for players who find the fairway. The landing zone is only 25 yards wide and framed tightly on both sides by pines, so hitting the short grass won’t be easy. Recent renovation work moved a lovely diagonal cross-stream 40 yards closer to the green and more into play on the second shot; it now feeds into a pond that guards the left side of the green. With the fairway canted modestly right to left and thus forcing a hook stance for most players, the goal here is not to overcook a long approach. The stream’s repositioning will also become a factor for anyone missing the fairway, since they will be forced to lay up. For right-handed players hitting a power draw off the tee, this hole will be a green-light special and offer a distinct advantage.

No. 17: 532 yards, par 5

  • Everyone will have a go at this green in two, often with a short iron, if they can hold the fairway off the tee. At only 532 yards (481 effective sea level yardage), it plays uphill, some 100 feet from tee to green. It’s also a hard dogleg left, requiring proper positioning. The hole was always an eagle-fest during The International and will be the easiest in relation to par for the BMW. Still, players will need to keep it in play off the tee – a hallmark of Nicklaus for decades as both a champion golfer and a noted course designer.

5. Arid climate, pristine conditions

Castle Pines stays in stunningly pristine shape in part because of its arid climate. There was no rain in June and July, but August brings “monsoon season,” with afternoon rains that can add up – as much as 2 inches through the first two weeks.

Maintenance is in good hands. Director of Golf Course and Grounds Scott Pavalko, who’s been on Castle Pines’ staff for two years, has eight editions of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday and the 2011 BMW Championship on his resume. Course superintendents Trevor Meints and Brandon Wollesen are part of a 56-person crew that will be aided by 45 tournament volunteers. The bentgrass greens, averaging 5,600 square feet, will be cut down to 1/10 inch for the tournament and roll at around 13.5 on the Stimpmeter. That will emphasize precise approach shots on greens that offer all sorts of subtle contours. There are false fronts and closely cropped peripheral areas that lead to bunkers, ponds and steep falloffs.

With 27 acres of fairway, the landing areas are not expansive and will require precise tee shots to narrow landing areas 300-330 yards from the back tees. Streams, ravines, ponds, steep fairway bunkers and the occasional signature tree further intrude upon driving lanes and give long hitters reason to gear back and use caution.

Tour Championship picks 2024: Our Experts’ Outright Predictions

Anonymous Caddie Picker of the week : Ludvig Aberg, with starting strokes (22-1, FanDuel) — The talented Swede came up just shy last week, but if you look closer at his play, his sloppy bogeys were really a result of some poor club choices playing at altitude. That’s not the case this week at East Lake. He’s essentially a better approach-playing version of Rory McIlroy right now, and you get some very good odds for the talented rookie to lift the FedEx Cup trophy and cement himself as one of golf’s biggest stars.

RELATED:  Ludvig Aberg is looking to move because his landlord, a fellow PGA Tour pro, 'is kind of tired of me'

Pat Mayo, Underdog/Fantasy National, Mayo Media Network analyst : Tommy Fleetwood, without starting strokes (20-1, FanDuel) — Unsurprisingly, Tommy Lad rebounded from a career-worse mark, losing eight strokes/putting in Memphis back into the positives at the BMW. The driving and irons remained as steady as ever. So, now, Tommy has a chance to pull a full Tommy: Win the 72-stroke play tournament without coming close to actually winning the overall.

Brandon Gdula, FanDuel/numberFire managing editor : Tommy Fleetwood, without starting strokes (20-1, FanDuel) — Fleetwood’s playing better golf than people probably realize, especially with his irons trending up of late. His putting has been hot and cold, and while he’s starting at just 1-under, he has a real shot to post the best four-round score at a course where he has played solidly.

Keith Stewart, Read The Line: Xander Schauffele, without starting strokes (+470, FanDuel) — In seven trips to East Lake, Xander Schauffele has finished with the low gross score three times! Strokes or no strokes, Schauffele has never finished worse than seventh. I know the course has changed, but that will only favor Xander more. Firm greens favor his scrambling ability. Grainy Bermudagrass never works well for Scottie. Two majors and a FedEx Cup, let the Player of the Year argument begin!

Watch the below video for Read The Line's breakdown of the 2024 Creator Classic:

Stephen Hennessey, Golf Digest dep. managing editor : Sam Burns, without starting strokes (16-1, DraftKings) — Xander and Scottie are talking about fatigue heading into this week, but you don’t hear Sam Burns complaining about it. He came up just shy last week with his Sunday 65, and now he gets the type of Bermuda test where he thrives. He needs to drive it straighter than his baseline, but give us his ball-striking performance from last week, and he can chase down the big guns.

Christopher Powers, Golf Digest senior writer : Sam Burns, without starting strokes (16-1, DraftKings) — Bermuda Burns is scorching hot right now, finishing T-12 or better in three straight starts. He’s fresh off a final-round 65 at Castle Pines, his sixth round of 67 or lower in his last 14 rounds on the PGA Tour. That kind of birdie-making ability is what you’re going to need to hit a winner in the without starting strokes market. Burns will start six back of his best bud at East Lake, so he’ll need to be firing at flags out of the gate.

Andy Lack, Run Pure Sports and Inside Golf podcast : Tommy Fleetwood, without starting strokes (20-1, FanDuel) — I feel a lot better about Tommy Fleetwood in any situation where he doesn’t have to win the actual tournament, and he is one of my favorite plays in the Without Starting Strokes market. Fleetwood is coming off another top-five finish at the BMW Championship, and now he returns to Bermuda-grass, where he has experienced considerable success over the course of his career.

Past results: The panel is SCORCHING hot. Brandon Gdula picked up his first outright win of the year at the FedEx St. Jude, correctly predicting Hideki Matsuyama’s victory at 25-1. The week before that, Stephen Hennessey and Christopher Powers both nailed Aaron Rai’s win at the Wyndham at 35-1, giving them each three outright winners in 2024. Before that, it was Pat Mayo cashing in on Scottie Scheffler’s gold medal at the Olympics (+400) for his third outright this year.

Tour Championship picks 2024: Sleepers/Dark Horses Who Could Win

Caddie: Billy Horschel, without starting strokes (33-1, FanDuel) — We know Billy loves this course, having lifted a FedEx Cup trophy in the past. And he might be playing the best golf of his career since that title. He’ll be super-motivated this week, knowing a great week gets him on the Presidents Cup team.

Mayo : Tom Hoge, without starting strokes (65-1, FanDuel) — It’s been months since Hoge put together elite approach weeks in a row. Yet after leading all players in Denver, backing Hoge feels actionable again at a course where irons and putting win the day. Of concern, Hoge’s dropped strokes with his putter in five straight, but he’s now back on Bermuda. Hoge’s been marginally positive on Bermuda greens over the past two years. And he did gain four strokes/putting in his only appearance at East Lake.

Gdula: Patrick Cantlay, with starting strokes (45-1, FanDuel) — Cantlay is starting at 4-under and has to run down a few big names, but we have seen someone win the Tour Championship from 4-under before, and his game is solid overall. The underlying data for him is still quite good, and he has a high ceiling even without playing to his peak potential of late.

Stewart: Sam Burns, without starting strokes (25-1, Bet365) — Sam Burns finished 13th at 3M, a very difficult driving course. Burns then finished fifth at the FedEx St. Jude, a Bermudagrass putting test. Last week, Sam was the BMW runner-up when he shot 65 on Sunday. A total test of golf in Denver, Burns gained over eight shots on the field. Bring him to another Bermudagrass playground in great form, and he’ll take home the gross title.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Justin Thomas, without starting strokes (29-1, FanDuel) — It would be a perfect narrative after last year coming up one shy of making the playoffs ... he was the last man into the Tour Championship this year. He doesn’t have much to lose and can play free and loose, knowing a big week can ensure a spot on the Presidents Cup team.

Powers, Golf Digest: Sam Burns, with starting strokes (40-1, DraftKings) — I mean, why the hell not? Scheffler seems to be limping into the Tour Championship, and him already showing disdain for the end-of-year format tells me the thought of losing the FedEx Cup (again) has already entered his head. Burns will be one of many trying to chase him down early on Thursday, and if Scheffler starts off slow, it’s anybody’s tournament again. Let’s go for the double winner.

Lack: Billy Horschel, without starting strokes (33-1, FanDuel) — Billy Horschel has already won a Tour Championship at East Lake, and he is coming off another strong performance at the BMW Championship where he gained strokes in both ball-striking categories. Horschel has been known to heat up at this time of year, and he has now gained three strokes ball-striking in four straight starts.

RELATED: Here's where all 30 players begin with the Tour Championship's staggered-start format

Tour Championship picks 2024: Players We’re Fading

Caddie: Hideki Matsuyama (12-1, FanDuel) — Last week might’ve been a cautionary WD from Hideki, but he’s clearly not 100 percent, and that’s reason enough to believe one of the other stars will get it done.

Mayo : Scottie Scheffler, with strokes (+110, FanDuel) — Of course he can figure it out, but in four starts at East Lake, Scheffler has never gained on the greens, losing on average 1.25 strokes putting per round over his past 12 rounds.

Gdula: Hideki Matsuyama (12-1, FanDuel) — Hideki was good to me at TPC Southwind, but I just don’t see enough value here to account for his back injury and WD last week.

Stewart: Scottie Scheffler, without starting strokes (+470, FanDuel) — For the third year in a row, Scottie Scheffler arrives in Atlanta as the favorite to win the FedEx Cup. East Lake has not been a happy place for Scheffler. Some believe changes to the course might help him, but I think that will only make the task of winning harder. Scottie is a not a good Bermudagrass putter. These brand-new greens will be some of the grainiest surfaces he has seen all year. Much like Pinehurst, East Lake will provide a ton of unpredictable bounces. Scheffler is on record stating how much that frustrates him. A combination of changed characteristics still lead me to believe Scottie will be second for the third year in a row.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Scottie Scheffler, without starting strokes (+470, FanDuel) — I'll echo Stewart’s sharp analysis above. It’s tough to get excited about these awful odds with Scheffler.

Powers, Golf Digest: Hideki Matsuyama (12-1, FanDuel) — It’s been confirmed that Matsuyama won’t be 100 percent this week. Knowing him, he’ll probably win now, but it’s still too risky at 11-1.

Lack: Hideki Matsuyama (12-1, FanDuel) — Tracking down Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele when all players are starting even is a difficult enough task. I don’t have a lot of confidence that Hideki Matsuyama in sub-optimal health has the fire power to come back and steal this tournament. I’ll gladly pass at this number

Tour Championship picks 2024: Matchups

Caddie: Billy Horschel (+140) over Tommy Fleetwood (FanDuel) — I understand Tommy’s playing great golf, but so is Horschel, so I don’t think the Florida Gator should be this much of an underdog.

Mayo : Xander Schauffele (+150) over Scottie Scheffler (Bet365) — Sure, he starts a stroke behind, but East Lake has been one of Xander’s best all-time courses where Scottie has just never figured out these greens.

Gdula: Taylor Pendrith (-120) over Chris Kirk (FanDuel) — Pendrith has the edge both in iron play and putting in recent rounds. That leads to a large overall skill gap when factoring in all four strokes-gained facets.

Stewart: Shane Lowry (-120) over Sahith Theegala (DraftKings) — Sahith Theegala qualified for the Presidents Cup team on points. He has no reason to push in Atlanta, and that’s good. Theegala has been battling an arm injury and could use the rest. He’s here to play, but I don’t believe he will try to aggravate it. Shane Lowry fits East Lake’s design. An accurate driver, Lowry also excels on approach. A solid Bermudagrass putter, Lowry can go low on courses like this where after a bad bounce or two, he can get up and down to save par.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Xander Schauffele (+150) over Scottie Scheffler (Bet365) — I’m following Mayo on this one—I have a ton more confidence in Xander’s putting and record at East Lake here.

Powers, Golf Digest: Patrick Cantlay (-140) over Wyndham Clark (DraftKings) — Wyndham has certainly been better of late and almost rode the home crowd’s energy to a top 10 in Colorado, but the approach game still isn’t all the way back yet. Cantlay, meanwhile, has gained strokes ball-striking in five straight events, and he’s finished T-7 or better at East Lake three consecutive years.

Lack: Byeong Hun An (-120) over Akshay Bhatia (DraftKings) — Byeong Hun An is coming off a 13th-place finish last week at the BMW Championship, where he gained over three strokes off the tee and three strokes putting, and he possesses all of the tee-to-green skill necessary to succeed at the revamped version of East Lake. Akshay Bhatia, on the other hand, is coming off his worst iron performance of the season at Castle Pines, where he lost a whopping 11.4 strokes on approach.

Matchup Results from the BMW Championship: Lack: 1 for 1 (Hovland (+105) over Matsuyama); Gdula: 1 for 1 (Pendrith (-115) over Eckroat); Hennessey: 1 for 1 (Schauffele (+125) over Scheffler); Stewart: PUSH (Rai (-120) over Young); Caddie: 0 for 1; Mayo: 0 for 1;

Matchup Results from this season (Wins-Losses-Pushes): Lack 21-11-2 (up 7.61 units); Caddie: 20-13-0 (up 5.29 units); Gdula: 19-12-3 (up 4.7 units); Hennessey: 18-12-4 (up 4.7 units); Powers: 16-15-2 (up 0.66 units); Mayo: 17-16-1 (up 0.61 units); Stewart: 13-19-2 (down 6.96 units)

Tour Championship picks 2024: Top 10s

Caddie: Keegan Bradley (-150, FanDuel) — You’ll need savvy touch with your approach play with these ultra-firm greens this week at East Lake, and that’s exactly the type of formula Keegan used to win last week.

Mayo : Sam Burns (+100, DraftKings) — Top 5s in both playoff events to date, beyond his scorching flat stick, Burns in the midst of his most consistent approach stretch since last summer. He’s gaining over two strokes per event with his irons over these past four starts. That’s not likely enough for someone to win, but eclipsing six strokes on the greens is well within his purview at the moment. That can cover up non-elite tee-to-green totals.

Gdula: Russell Henley (+180, FanDuel) — Henley starts at 2-under, so he’s within shouting distance of the top 10 already. But he’s an accurate driver who putts well on Bermuda, and in recent rounds (the last 50 for each golfer), he ranks fifth in strokes gained/approach through putting.

Stewart: Billy Horschel (+275, BetRivers) — Who’s better on grainy Bermudagrass than Billy Horschel? Horschel has been on a heater since his runner-up finish at the Open Championship. Motivated to earn one of those coveted captain's picks on the Presidents Cup team, Billy will grind his way to Royal Montreal. Horschel is gaining an average of six strokes on the field in his past five starts and carries an incredible edge this week. A past FedEx Cup Champion, he knows what it takes to win at East Lake. On a week where there will be wild bounces and grainy greens, take the tour’s toughest competitor at the Tour Championship.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Sungjae Im (+150, DraftKings) — This is a great fit for Sungjae, who has proven East Lake is his jam.

Powers, Golf Digest: Sungjae Im (+150, DraftKings) — Plus money on a top 10 for a guy who is literally starting the week T-11 is not something I’m passing up. Last week marked Im’s ninth finish of T-12 or better in his last 12 starts.

Lack: Sungjae Im (+150, DraftKings) — Sungjae Im continues to play some rock solid golf in the back half of the season, and he is coming off an 11th-place finish at the BMW Championship where he gained over a stroke in both ball-striking categories. Im already has a runner-up under his belt at East Lake, and he possesses a long track record of success at Southeastern Bermuda courses.

Top-10 results from the BMW Championship: Caddie: 1 for 1 (Ludvig Aberg +162); Everybody else: 0 for 1

Top-10 results from this season: Hennessey: 11 for 34 (up 66.35 units); Mayo: 6 for 34 (down 6.5 units); Powers: 6 for 34 (down 6.6 units); Caddie: 7 for 33 (down 5.93 units); Stewart: 6 for 34 (down 9.42 units); Gdula: 5 for 34 (down 9.9 units); Lack: 6 for 34 (down 13.55 units)

2024 Tour Championship Full Field: Top 30 Battle for the FedEx Cup and Big Bucks

John schwarb | aug 26, 2024.

Venerable East Lake Golf Club is again the site of the Tour Championship.

The PGA Tour season which began in January in Kapalua ends this week in Atlanta.

The Tour Championship is again the finale for the three-tournament FedEx Cup playoffs, where the field has been whittled from 70 to 50 to 30. A $100 million prize pool is at stake this week with a whopping $25 million to the winner. Pro golf is overflowing with cash these days but that’s still a number that will get the attention of the world’s best.

Scottie Scheffler comes in at the top of the points list and will start at -10 in the “starting strokes” format—and if that sounds familiar, it is. Scheffler has come in as the points leader three years in a row, but the last two times he failed to bring home the big prize as Rory McIlroy grabbed it in 2022 (his third FedEx Cup) and Viktor Hovland won last year. Both are in the field again this year, as are past FedEx Cup champions Patrick Cantlay (2021), Xander Schauffele (2017) and Billy Horschel (2014).

Xander Schauffele, who has had the low gross score outright or tied in two of the last four years (meaning best score regardless of starting strokes), will begin the week two behind Scheffler. Hideki Matsuyama, the winner of the first playoff event at the FedEx St. Jude, is three back and Keegan Bradley—the Cinderella story who barely made it to the BMW Championship then won it —is four back. The farthest-back players will be at even and need to make up a lot of ground to contend for the title.

East Lake Golf Club, the oldest course in Atlanta and where Bobby Jones learned how to play, has hosted the Tour Championship annually since 2004. The course underwent a significant restoration and will look a bit different on screens this year, especially with the removal of many trees. The course is now a par-71 instead of 70 (the downhill 14th hole will now be a par-5) and playing slightly longer at 7,490 yards.

Tour Championship full field

30 players Åberg, Ludvig An, Byeong Hun Bezuidenhout, Christiaan Bhatia, Akshay Bradley, Keegan Burns, Sam Cantlay, Patrick Clark, Wyndham Finau, Tony Fleetwood, Tommy Henley, Russell Hoge, Tom Horschel, Billy Hovland, Viktor Im, Sungjae Kirk, Chris Lowry, Shane MacIntyre, Robert Matsuyama, Hideki McIlroy, Rory Morikawa, Collin Pavon, Matthieu Pendrith, Taylor Rai, Aaron Schauffele, Xander Scheffler, Scottie Scott, Adam Straka, Sepp Theegala, Sahith Thomas, Justin

2024 bmw championship odds, picks and pga tour predictions, share this article.

foals tour usa

After trimming the FedExCup playoff race from 70 to 50 players at the FedEx St. Jude Championship this past weekend, another 20 players will be eliminated this week at the 2024 BMW Championship . It’s the 2nd leg of the playoffs before the Tour Championship where the FedExCup champion will be crowned at East Lake. The BMW Championship is being hosted by Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado for the 1st time.

Below, we look at BetMGM Sportsbook’s 2024 BMW Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

The field this week is limited to only the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings, which leaves players such as Tom Kim, Jake Knapp and Justin Rose on the outside. Scottie Scheffler remains the top player in the standings, followed by Xander Schauffele and last week’s champion, Hideki Matsuyama . Keegan Bradley was the 50th and final player to get into the field, so he’ll need a big week if he’s going to make it to Atlanta.

Castle Pines is a staggering 8,130 yards long and a par 72, but that’s due to the elevation effect. At 6,200 feet above sea level, the ball will travel a lot further this week, which makes up for the longer yardage numbers on the scorecard. The higher elevation will add about 10% more yardage to players’ shots, bringing the realistic distance down to about 7,300 yards.

BMW Championship – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 4:26 p.m. ET.

Xander Schauffele (+550)

Course history is essentially non-existent this week, which makes it a good time to bet the top of the board with Schauffele. You can’t go wrong with Scheffler, either, but Schauffele is in equally great form and was top-7 in both SG: putting and tee-to-green last week in Memphis.

Collin Morikawa (+1400)

Morikawa had a weird week in Memphis, finishing 14th in SG: putting but 41st tee-to-green. His numbers are usually the other way around, but perhaps it’s an indication that he’s found something with the putter and that last week’s ball-striking performance was an outlier from the norm.

BMW Championship picks – Contenders

Aaron rai (+4000).

Rai has been one of the best iron players and overall ball-strikers on tour this season, continuing that trend in Memphis where he was 2nd in SG: tee-to-green but 64th out of 70 players on the greens. In a tournament at a relatively new course to most of the field, bet on ball-strikers.

Wyndham Clark (+2800)

Clark has been a tough player to bet on all year because of how volatile he’s been. He’s surprisingly been fairly consistent since the Travelers Championship in June, finishing 9th, 10th, 14th and 7th in 4 of his last 5 starts; he also missed the cut at the Open Championship during that stretch. Last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he was 7th from tee-to-green and 13th in SG: putting.

Tony Finau (+2800)

Finau tied for 16th last week after ranking 12th in SG: tee-to-green, once again putting on a ball-striking display in Memphis. Aside from missing the cut at the Open, he’s played great recently; he’s finished T-18 or better in 7 of his last 8 starts since the PGA Championship.

BMW Championship picks – Long shot

Nick dunlap (+6600).

Dunlap had a great showing in Memphis and was in contention on the weekend, securing his spot in the top 50. He did so by ranking 6th in SG: tee-to-green and 11th in putting, really only struggling around the greens. If he plays like that again, he’ll be in contention for the 2nd straight week.

Foals (formed in 2005) is an English alternative and indie rock band, known for combining minimalist soundscapes with dance and new wave influences, hailing from Oxford, England.

Frontman Yannis Philippakis and drummer Jack Bevan were originally in the math rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald, before deeming it too serious and parting ways. Along with vocalist Andrew Mears, guitarist Jimmy Smith, and bassist Walter Gervers, Foals was formed in 2010. The group’s debut output was the 7” single “Try This on Your Piano/Look at My Furrows of Worry” released in 2006, after which vocalist Andrew Mears left Foals to concentrate on his other band Youthmovies. Following his departure Philippakis took the leading role, and began translating the influences of techno, Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, and the Talking Heads into their signature sound.

Foals’ debut full-length “Antidotes” was recorded in New York City with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and released in March 2008. Featuring cryptic themes and typically melancholy compositions, the album earned rave reviews from the majority if the musical press. Aided by the singles “Balloons”, “Cassius”, “Red Socks Pugie”, and “Olympic Airways”, the album peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart.

In 2009 Foals opened for Blur on their reunion show in Hyde Park, and played a host of festivals, including T in the Park and All Tomorrow’s Parties, to test out new material. The band’s follow up album, “Total Life Forever”, appeared in 2010, led by the track “Spanish Sahara”, premiered by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. Once again receiving strong reviews the album was shortlisted for 2010 Mercury Prize and charted at No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart. The full-length “Holy Fire” was released in February 2013 produced by Flood and Alan Moulder. Using animal bones acquired from butcher’s shops for percussive accoutrements, the album was led by the single “My Number”, and charted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart.

Live reviews

Mindblowing. Asskicking. No holds barred. Take no prisoners. These are the words that come to mind when I think about a Foals show.

The first time I saw Foals was only after I had just listened to their song, "Spanish Sahara". Just that one song and my mind was made up. I needed to see them. Turns out that one song was merely a comma in the string of punctuations this band is capable of creating. That song is probably the tamest one they played, and I couldn't be more grateful.

A strobe light show starts off their performance to the band members entering one by one. Then lead singer Yannis Phillippakis takes the stage, his signature black Travis Bean guitar in hand. He had a wireless setup for that guitar - a tipoff that I immediately recognized. This show was about to get insane.

They ran through a few of their hits from their first album, "Mathletics", such as "Red Socks Pugie", and "Cassius". The crowd was in absolute hysterics. Ebbing and flowing with the music, people crowd surfing and ramming into each other. The song progressed into songs off their sophomore release, "Total Life Forever", where they played "Blue Blood", the aforementioned "Spanish Sahara", and the amped-up "Two Steps, Twice".

Then mayhem. Yannis runs top speed and propels himself into the crowd (who were miraculously ready and caught him). All the while, Yannis continues playing his guitar. What happened next was a thing of beauty. Somehow, Yannis makes his way to the side of the venue and proceeds to climb up to the balcony level, and again, launches himself off into the crowd. In all my years, I've never seen someone with such a low fear of death or injury.

Since this first performance I've seen Foals a number of times and they never disappoint. Even when they were added as a last minute addition to fill in for a band that canceled for Governor's Ball 2013, they managed to win over everyone at the festival, some saying they were the highlight of the entire event. Easily one of the best live acts I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Without a doubt, I have never danced, jumped, and sweat so much than when I am at a Foals show. Do yourself a favor, drop any plans you might have and go see Foals. Well worth it.

Foals are one of those bands that for me get better and better with each album ‎release. I’d not seen them perform live before last year’s Leeds festival where I ‎absolutely delighted to catch them as the ‘surprise act’. ‎

Therefore when the tickets were announced for the First Direct arena in Leeds with ‎support from Everything Everything it was a no brainer to buy them. ‎

Everything Everything gave a great performance with Jonathan Higgs’s vocals ‎fitting of a large arena. Thanks to a strong setlist the audience was fully engaged ‎and set up the stage perfectly for Foals. ‎

Foals opened with Snake Oil quickly building momentum and then maintaining it ‎with Olympic Airways and My Number. Foals did a great job of mixing in some ‎slower tracks and then whipping the crowd into a frenzy by following them up with a ‎more upbeat track, this was done to perfection when Inhaler bellowed out and ‎rounded off the pre-encore set following Late Night and A Knife in the Ocean. ‎

The stage lighting effects brilliantly added to the show throughout being at their best ‎when Foals boomed out Providence.‎

Foals first encore track was London Thunder, the crowd watched on mesmerised ‎before we were sent into chaos bouncing and singing along to What Went Down ‎before Foals closed brilliantly with Two Steps, Twice.‎

Foals stepped up another level on Saturday with their performance on the arena ‎stage and it was evident why they are winning awards, filling arenas and ‎headlining festivals.‎

Many people would argue that Foals are the most exciting British guitar band currently working to date. Though this may be a bold claim, the strength of the band's latest LP 'Holy Fire' paired with the passion and aggression of their live show could be considered a more than sufficient amount of evidence.

I was incredibly lucky to see the 'Holy Fire' tour three times, and it is a show of ultimate contrasts and a level of fan dedication I have never seen before. The crowds are moshing and jumping by the introduction of instrumental number 'Prelude' and energy levels simply increase from here. The whole crowd is a swirling mess during 'Olympic Airways' as they scream 'RE-A-PPE-AR' in time with the incredible frontman Yannis Philippakis. 'My Number' evokes yet more singalong before they bring even more momentous guitar riffs for 'Providence' as Yannis launches himself into his loyal followers to carry him whilst still picking his trusty guitar strings. The venue mellows for a moment as they play the spanning, cinematic 'Spanish Sahara' which is emotionally devastating when performed live.

The cathartic, anthemic atmosphere is indescribable as the whole audience stand awaiting the recognisable melody of 'Inhaler'. It is startling to consider Foals have only released three albums as they are fast approaching legendary status.

Foals’ ‘Holy Fire’ album tour was most aptly named indeed: Foals were so on fire, they brought the house down. Foals’ latest album has been an incredible success for the indie, alternative rock band. Having only formed in 2005, the band has gone from height to height during their short but powerful career. They have now established themselves as one of the most popular indie rock bands in Britain, amassing a huge fan base during this time. Indeed, their show was packed out with young hipsters, students and teens all crowded excitedly to watch the indie fivesome perform live. They did not disappoint. Yannis Philippakis led the band through a great show, his unique voclas capturing the crowd and Jack Bevan’s superb drumming skills working the crowd up into a frenzy with his powerful motions. Foals are so phenomenal because they succeed in blending a mix of genres, combining new wave influences with minimalist soundscapes. They are a perfect blend of techno, new wave, indie and alternative rock. Songs such as ‘My Number’, which ended the night on a brilliant high and with many excited cheers, ‘Everytime’ and ‘Bad Habit’ are all extremely catchy works of pure musical genius.

I was really pleased to get tickets for this gig - the price was amazing and to receive the album as part of the price was the icing on the cake!

I was also excited by the prospect of such an intimate gig, with the 1800 person capacity. The band were fantastic as ever!!

Having said that, the venue was really disappointing, with extremely limited views due to the amount of club-themed paraphernalia hanging from the ceiling and lots of pillars which restricted most views of the stage.

It was also awkward to travel to Kingston from East London where I work, and it was equally difficult to get from the venue to Chesham at the end of the Met line where I live.

Overall I had a great time, it was just a shame about the venue and the location.

"Spring Fling" was a awesome assortment for everyone!

The line up was excellent, and The Foals shined brightly!

The venue doesn't have the best sound, it's an empty old Armoury, steel and concrete, with hardwood floors, but the price for 4 bands, especially this line up is way worth it!

Mountain At My Gate, was and is one of the best, they didn't miss a note and listening on my phone will be a guilty pleasure even way after the show!

If you get the chance, check them out.

This line up was by far the best I've seen in a smaller venue, Cage the Elephant, Silversun Pickups, The Foals, and Bear Hands! For under $40!!!!

All serious musicians, great music good times! Crowd was a varied age group, I brought my 14yr old and had a great time!

Fantastic Foals - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon, in the company of Yannis and co.

Played Everything Not Saved part 1 in its entirety, gave us a couple of extra treats and a preview of a track from Part 2, black bull. No bull only brilliant music from a band that are on fire.

Matinee performance, great to see young Foals fans there. Well managed entry, Fat Sams a good venue. Can’t wait for them to come around again. Dundee really is the capital of cool after hosting two gigs in one day by this might band.

What can I say about Foals other than they are fantastic! I've seen them 3 times and they are definitely one of my most favourite bands.

Their music is electrifying, the laser light show amazing and Yannis, as expected, did his crowd surfing.

Most of the songs were from their most recent album "What Went Down" but there were also other songs from the previous wonderful "Holy Fire" album as well as a track from an earlier album.

The crowd seemed to relish every song - a truly enjoyable gig in every sense.

joodywoody’s profile image

Saw them first at Glastonbury a few years back but spent so much time trying to survive the mosh pit didn't know what I felt about the band. Thursday nights performance in Kingston really sorted out any uncertainty I had. One of the best live acts I have seen and an incredibly generous performance with new and old tracks. They played longer than expected so we were totally spoilt for our £11 tickets.

When Paramore revealed they were recording together in January 2022 the response from music fans around the world was immediate and celebratory. In the time since the Grammy-winning, RIAA-certified multi-Platinum band released their last album,  After Laughter   – and Hayley Williams unveiled two lauded solo albums – Paramore have become more popular than ever.  Over the last few years Paramore’s influence and popularity has snowballed, as the age of streaming organically propelled them into a position as one of the world’s biggest, most culturally compelling rock bands. For the band, who formed as teenagers in Tennessee, their 20 year trajectory has seen them grow from youthful outsiders to bone-fide pop culture icons, permeating the musical landscape by inspiring a new generation of musical talent.Their forthcoming sixth album,  This Is Why  – set for release on  Atlantic Records  on  February 10th  –  is preceded by the title track, the most immediate radio hit of the band’s career to date.

Renowned for their arena-filling and festival-headlining performance prowess, the opportunity to see Paramore play their first theater shows in years created headline news. Their upcoming run of intimate live dates sold out in minutes. The band are donating a portion of their ticket sales to organizations working in areas of essential community support, including   Support & Feed.
