The US Am Tour is an extremely well-run tour that provides quality tournaments at outstanding venues. I enjoy the opportunity to compete for trophies and prizes and have met many competitors who have become great friends. If you love golf and like to compete, you have to join!

Earl T.

The US Am Tour is run in a very professional manner by local & regional tournament directors at top-notch venues. The multiple flights are suited for all levels of players. The camaraderie with players you meet at each event is great & the level of competitiveness is high, so bring your A-game. The tournaments will make you play within your own abilities & tests all aspects of your game. Try and minimize the bad holes and go have fun doing it!

GARY

The US Am tour is special to me because of the friendships and camaraderie you build with people who love the game as much as you do. With their flight system it opens up competitive golf to all ages and skill levels and drives you to work harder to get to the next level in your own game. We play amazing courses, with great competition and the chance to feel like a pro is what keeps me coming back for more. Thank you US Am Tour!

CARL L

As a Senior still working full time, playing golf is enjoyable. And playing competitive golf is great fun. But playing golf on the US Am Tour is the ultimate competition for those of us “committed” amateur golfers. Competitive golf helps me to improve and test my golf game against other players of the same age and skill set. That is the unique quality of the USAT. The tournament venues, while varied with both private and public courses, always present challenges. As the USAT is a true Amateur tour, you can set your schedule to include course venues, cities, and regions that you live in or would like to travel to. Qualifying events are never a prerequisite for entry. Friendships are made with your fellow competitors, with genuine respect for each other. The end result is quality competitive golf, with a professional tour staff that makes for the ultimate amateur golf experience.

ANDREW B

After picking up golf as an adult, The US Am Tour has been an amazing way to learn the game and meet good friends through friendly competition. My first year on Tour, I placed 2nd in the 20+ flight at Nationals the year my husband took 1st place in the 12.0-15.9 flight. Now, after playing many Am Tour events together, I have improved my game and won my first US Am Tour tournament in Hogan (8.0-11.9)! Nationals is an awesome week and brings together all of the amazing friends we have made over the years. US Am Tour has become our little golf family, and I am so thankful to be a part of this amazing group!

HEATHER R

I really like the camaraderie, the courses, and definitely the competition. These parts of the US Am Tour combined with top notch run tournaments has definitely helped me step up my game!

SEAN H.

What I enjoy about playing on the US Am Tour is I get to play competitive golf and meet great people that become lifelong friends. Playing competitive golf has truly made me a better tournament player. 10 years ago when I started playing competitively more often I was a 15 handicap and have worked my way into a mid-single digit now and am having a lot of fun!

About THE TOUR

A letter from matt johnson - ceo.

I am excited to bring you the #1 experience in Amateur Golf!

Our roots started in Cincinnati, Ohio as the Golf Channel AM Tour, established our tournament model independently under The Queen City AM Tour and regionally grew as the American Heartland Tour.  We now expand into a National Tour founded as the NAGT.

Our Mission is to grow the game by connecting players and partners with organized and professionally run amateur tournaments for all ages and skills levels. What makes us unique is our focus on your player experience.

Our tour offers players and partners with a unique culture built around camaraderie, competition, and charity! We proudly connect our players and sponsors to their local communities while playing alongside their local heroes; Veterans and First Responders.

We welcome all who love the game as much as we do and support our vision to grow the game, bring people together, and operate with integrity.

There is no cost to join the tour, membership is optional so give us a try. For those who want to become supporters then membership will help you play more often and more affordably.

The NAGT is the first to offer a stand alone division for Veteran, First Responder, Ladies, and Super Seniors 65+ players along with crowning National Champions in both gross and net scoring for Open and Senior.

When you participate in the NAGT you help grow the game, support your local community, and connect to great people through the common interest of golf and helping others; this is more than just a round of tournament golf. It's about building lifelong friendships.

Thank you for your support of the NAGT and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Punch Shots: Which Am Tour major makes the best golf vacation centerpiece?

  • By Golf Channel Digital , Mike Bailey , Jason Deegan
  • Feb 27, 2012 5:30 PM ET

Left: Ivan Marin shows off his winning crystal from the Puerto Rico Open's Sr. Jones division. Right:  Bayonet/Blackhorse hosts the Northern California Championship May 19-20.

What makes the perfect golf vacation? For some, it's the chance for competition on a world class golf course.

With major championship season under way on the Golf Channel Am Tour , we asked veteran travel writers Jason Deegan and Mike Bailey which major venue they'd most make the centerpiece of their golf vacation.

Jason Deegan: Kohler, Wisconsin

It’s hard to turn down playing on U.S. Open venues (Chambers Bay and Pinehurst No. 2) and PGA Tour stops (the TPC of Sawgrass, Disney and PGA National), but if I were forced to pick one Am Tour major, I’d tee it up at Blackwolf Run for the Midwest Classic May 19-20 . It offers arguably the best combination of tracks on the circuit, although fans of Pinehurst and Troon North could certainly argue their sites are just as good or better.

The Meadow Valleys and River courses at Blackwolf Run are championship tests one hour north of Milwaukee in sleepy Kohler, Wis. Nine holes on each course were recently renovated to create a composite layout that will host the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open. Golf Digest ranks both courses among the "Top 100 Public Courses in America" (River No. 15, Meadows Valley No. 60). The setting of the River course might look pretty, but the meandering river creates a dangerous place for golf. More elevation changes characterize Meadow Valleys.

Looking for more? There’s a PGA Championship and future Ryder Cup course right down the road in Haven. Just don’t ground your club in any of the thousand or so bunkers on the Straits Course at Whistling Straits.

The five-star digs at the old-world American Club are gorgeous, but too pricey for many. Stay at the resort’s Inn on Woodlake to save a few bucks. It isn’t warm enough in May to truly enjoy the beaches of Lake Michigan. However, it should be just fine for golf. Kohler is the kind of place where players could bring some buddies, the wife or even the entire family. It’s a relatively affordable destination (away from the resort) and packed with great golf. Not everybody will secure victory against these two tough Pete Dye courses, but at least those who play in the event will head home feeling like a winner.

Mike Bailey: Black Horse at Bayonet in Monterey

When asked what my favorite golf destination is, more often than not, I point to one region: the Monterey Bay area. It is, of course, where you'll find Pebble Beach, but the location is special for so much more than that, including the site of the Golf Channel Am Tour's Northern California Championship at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside on May 19-20th.

The tournament will be conducted on the Black Horse Course, considered the easier of the two layouts, but by no means a pushover at more than 7,300 yards. Like its sister course, which has hosted U.S. Open qualifiers as of late, Black Horse was covered by a 2008 $13 million renovation led by architect Gene Bates. This wasn't just a restoration; this was a complete makeover, better than the original. Despite the great history of this 36-hole complex that was once part of the old Fort Ord military base, these two courses have never looked better, especially Blackhorse. What you have now is a beautiful all-bentgrass championship layout with cool fingerling bunkers, wonderfully complicated greens complexes and views of the Pacific that most golfers didn't even know existed before.

As a golf destination, though, the Monterey area is unparalleled. The event takes place in May, and for some of us in the South, it's already unbearably hot, so the sweater weather temperatures of Northern California are already welcome. Add to that the rest of the courses in the Monterey collection: I am particular fond of century-old Del Monte and even some inland gems such as Carmel Valley Ranch, Quail Lodge and Rancho Canada, and you could spend a terrific week of playing golf. And don't forget nearby Pacific Grove, the back nine of which runs along the ocean and shares the same designer as Pebble Beach.

You can also chalk up the charming ambience of Monterey Bay with its cafes, boutique hotels, Cannery Row, Old Fisherman's Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. There's nothing more beautiful or relaxing.

Golf Channel Am Tour Customer Review

By Nextgengolf

Golf Channel Am Tour Customer Review

As a young adult consumer, we can read reviews about golf clubs, golf courses, and resorts on sites like Golf Advisor, 3balls.com and Mygolfspy, but where can you read reviews about golf tours and tournaments that exist out there? Since we are biased and cannot review Nextgengolf events, we have asked some of our customers that have played on multiple tours to share their opinion for other young adults.

This article about the Golf Channel Am Tour is the first in a series of “Tour Review” pieces that will provide insight into different golf tournament opportunities out there for young adults.

Shaun is a competitor in the Nextgengolf City Tour as well as a competitor on the Golf Channel Am Tour. Shaun highlights the pros and cons of the Am Tour which he describes as birdies (good) and bogeys (bad). Emphasis is mine.

Looking for summer golf tournaments?

The Golf Channel Am Tour uses Bluegolf (which PGA and everyone else uses) which is cool and makes you feel like your score matters more being posted publicly. Your scorecard is emailed to you immediately after the round and shared via digital leaderboard on-site. My mom texts me about 5 minutes after I sign my card which is a cool thing to know she's watching.

They have a FedEx style points system that dictates entry into regional and national "majors", but really it just makes you play regularly if you want to find yourself on a national stage. Emails with standings are sent weekly to keep you updated on where you are.

They put sponsored signage up around the putting green, range, and in the tournament check in area so it looks somewhat legit, and they announce your name and location upon your tee time. You also are given a trophy which is corny but cool for those of us who never had a huge athletic achievement in the younger years. When I won the tour championship in 2014 it was the best moment of my golf career no question .

Regional and National Majors can really bring together golf fanatics from all over. New England is usually represented well at Nationals and some of the biggest name courses on the national schedule, including Blackwolf Run, Kiawah, TPC Sawgrass, Innsbrook, etc. It's cool to see an 8 hcp from New England take on and beat a +1 from Florida when hilly courses test your versatility (Yes that was me in 2014).

I'd say first off, I can understand some of the expenses associated with running the Am tour. There are a lot of employees around the country running local events, not to mention sometime a full days worth of tee times to pay the course for. In turn, this creates some pretty significant membership and entry fees per tournament. It is a financial burden for someone like me who isn't a lawyer, Doctor, or business owner like the vast majority of members seem to be.

I just paid $179 for my annual renewal, and each local tournament ranges from $115-$200 per day. Most are one day tournaments on Saturday or Sunday. We only play public courses on the New England tour with the one exception yearly being Lake Winnepausaukee, so it's not like we are playing exclusive courses or anything like that. I played the Kiawah major in March and that ran me $595 for two days plus flight and lodging.

I know of several guys who spend between $20-$30k a year playing the Am Tour including the travel around the country and the lodging. These guys (and some women) are super serious about the commitment and love of the game.

The competition is another real mess. The reality of the Golf Channel Am Tour is its full of a bunch of wannabe golfers. As mentioned, there are plenty of HNWI's who show up with a tour bag, the newest drivers, head to toe looking like a Golf Galaxy catalog who SUCK. Am Tour has flights from 0-4 up to 30+. I recently played Kiawah Ocean and a guy shot a 179-181 for his two day total of 360 . He has absolutely no reason to be allowed on a tournament venue but Am Tour will gladly take his money and give him the opportunity to post scores like that.

I play the 4-8 handicap flight, and each local tournament I have about 8-10 competitors, of which maybe 3 have a chance to beat me (unless I completely beat myself). Plenty of 8's shoot in the high 90s because they are so inconsistent and only count their best scores. I shot a 77 last year and the round took almost 6 hours because someone in my group shot a 114. I got assessed a 2 stroke penalty for slow play because the guy couldn't hit the ball in the air. He was supposedly a 6 hcp.

You get a fair amount of ignorant cheaters. I'm not a rules expert, but you'll have the weekend casual golfer sign up in your group, or even worse, on your cart who has no clue how to take a drop or understands OB rules. You don't want to get into an argument with someone who is truly ignorant of the rules, but I hate spending a ton of money on a one day tournament for my experience to be ruined by a cheater.

I'm a branding guy, and I believe the Golf Channel Am Tour is the tour for wannabes. It's fine, I'm a wannabe too, but in order to get to the next level I need to go up a rung on the competition ladder and play with younger, better talent. Regardless, the Am Tour has been instrumental in becoming a much better, well rounded golfer and is an excellent, albeit expensive starting point for anyone who wants to use golf as their competitive outlet and healthy habit.

A year of competition, highlighted by more than 7,500 amateur golfers of all ages and skill levels who competed across 700 tournaments in 2018, will culminate today with the start of the Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships . The competition will take place through Sept. 30 at California’s famed Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

The Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships are divided into two events – Open National Championship, Sept. 21-24, and Senior National Championship (ages 50+), Sept. 27-30. Each player in the field will compete on all four courses in the rotation:  Mission Hills Country Club – Dinah Shore Course (host of the ANA Inspiration, one of five major championships in professional women’s golf); Mission Hills Country Club – Pete Dye Challenge Course; Westin Mission Hills – Gary Player Signature Course; and Westin Mission Hills – Pete Dye Resort Course.

The format for both the open and senior division championships is a 72-hole, individual stroke-play competition with no cut. Twelve competitors in six flights – six from the senior division and six from the open division – will be crowned national champions in official awards ceremonies immediately following the conclusion of their respective tournaments.

Competitors will have the opportunity to meet several NBC Sports/Golf Channel on-air personalities during the Championships, including Tom Abbott, Jerry Foltz, Lisa Cornwell and Tripp Isenhour.

The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa is serving as the host hotel for the competitors and their families, as well as for both welcome dinners. This is the second consecutive year the Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships will be held at Westin Mission Hills, but marks the fifth time the event has taken place in Palm Springs (PGA West in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015). Other host venues have included TPC Sawgrass (2010, 2012), Grayhawk Golf Club (2014), and Innisbrook Resort (2016).

Golf Channel Am Tour offers an authentic, golf tour-quality experience for players of all ages and abilities, as well as an opportunity to compete on top golf courses in your area and around the country and against golfers of similar skill level.  The Tour is accepting sign-ups for the 2018 season on the Golf Channel Am Tour website.

A few reasons why you should play the golf channel am tour.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – GolfChannel.com spent a recent weekend with the Golf Channel Am Tour at the Palmetto Dunes Major Championships, where 163 amateur golfers in 10 flights navigated their way through the Jones and Hills courses at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort . If you’re not familiar with the Am Tour, here is your introduction. In fact, if you’re not playing the Am Tour, these are a few reasons why you should. Feel like a pro For more golf in Hilton Head Island, or to plan your next trip visit: http://www.hiltonheadgolf.com/ http://www.hiltonheadgolf.com/

Whether you’re playing in a PGA Tour event or a charity scramble, the goal of any competitive golfer is painfully simple: Win the tournament. And while most events have one winner and a bunch of losers, the Am Tour has found a way to spread the wealth without diluting the experience of winning. If you don’t believe us, just ask Erwin Watson, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., one of ten flight winners at Palmetto Dunes.

“This is my first-ever win,” the elated 11-handicapper told GolfChannel.com after capturing the Sarazen flight. “I’ve been close, but no cigar. It feels great to finally get a win.”

Each of the ten flight winners at Palmetto Dunes walked away with a Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card, a crystal trophy, and the priceless confidence boost that comes with beating the best players in your skill level.

In addition to the winnings, the stage on which these championships are conducted is equally impressive. The list of this year’s Am Tour Major host sites reads like a PGA Tour schedule, with current PGA Tour venues TPC San Antonio, PGA National, TPC Deere Run, Innisbrook and TPC Scottsdale on the Am Tour roster. Fittingly, this year’s National Championships are staged at the famed Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass.

If all that isn’t enough to make you feel like a pro, know that in true PGA Tour fashion, each competitor’s name is announced as he or she is called to the 1st tee. It can be a nervous jolt of reality if you’re not used to playing tournament golf, but it’s the price you pay for playing on the same stage as the pros. Family and work-friendly events

If you’re like most golfers, there are two things powerful enough to make playing the game we love nearly impossible: Family and work. Fortunately, the Am Tour has a decent solution for both.

If you tell your family you’re heading to South Carolina for a golf tournament next month, there’s a good chance you’ll get a roll of the eyes and a reminder that you were just at a golf tournament – even if you weren’t.

To make the family happy, consider bringing them with you. After all, most local and regional Am Tour events are at family-friendly resorts, and Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island – the South Carolina vacation spot – is no exception.

In addition to three great golf courses, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has abundant beaches, bike trails, tennis courts, kayaking, fishing and shopping, which ensures your family will have plenty to do while you’re on the golf course.

“Bringing my wife with me is great because golf courses are the one place she doesn’t like to go, and malls are the one place I don’t like to go,” joked Jones flight winner Delbert Roberts, who made the 11-hour drive from Louisville, Ky. with his wife. “Turning these tournaments into three-or-four-day weekends is just easier.”

If it’s business that has you tied up, consider the Am Tour’s national footprint of more than 800 events in 33 states.

Have a Monday seminar in Dallas? What better way to clear your mind before the meeting than to fly in a day early and play an Am Tour event? Your annual membership allows you to play in as many events as you’d like, on any of the 61 local tours.

You never know who you’ll meet While there is no official record kept for most accomplished golfer on the Am Tour, the nod undoubtedly goes to 71-year-old Don Allen, Rochester, N.Y., a seasoned amateur golfer who, in addition to the Palmetto Dunes Major, played in three Masters and four U.S. Opens. But don’t remind him about all that.

Recalling his experience at Palmetto Dunes, Allen laughed. “On the practice tee people came up to me and said, ‘I heard you played in the Masters!’ I told them, ‘Yeah, I did. Now can you please turn your back when I hit? That was during a different life.’”

Joking aside, Allen really did dominate amateur golf in the 1960s. In that span he won three of his 11 New York State Amateur titles, and was two shots out of a playoff at the 1966 U.S. Amateur at Merion. His performance in elite amateur events earned him a position on two Walker Cup teams.

“In the middle 60s I played at a pretty good level,” Allen recalls, “but when marriage and children came along I was one of those guys that had to work. I thought I could play all right, but I just didn’t want to get into all the other stuff.”

Instead of golf, the entrepreneurial Allen focused on his insurance business, which he still runs today in Rochester. He has a second home in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and learned of the Palmetto Dunes Major in the local paper. It was the first round of golf he’d played in five months.

“I went out there and hit a couple practice balls, and all the sudden I got called to the first tee and I was like, ‘Oh boy, here we go.’”

Allen was placed in the Championship flight, and although he finished 17th out of 20 golfers, none of that mattered to the grizzled vet.

“I was appreciative of the way I was treated by the staff out there, and I made some friends too. It was a really fun tournament all the way around.”

Fuel for your competitive fire In speaking with flight winners after the Palmetto Dunes Major we found that above all, competition is what they enjoy most about the Am Tour.

“I joined the Am Tour because I wanted tournament experience, plain and simple,” said Championship flight winner Jonathan Bolen, Jacksonville, Fla. The +1.9-handicapper has aspirations to play professionally, and he values the experience he’s gaining by playing the Am Tour.

For others, a sort of competition within the competition is what motivates them.

Sal Minicozzi, Braselton, Ga., attributed his victory in the Senior Hogan flight to the motivation he receives from a group of friends from home that plays the Am Tour with him.

“A friend from my home club gathered a group and said, ‘Let’s play the Am Tour,’” Minicozzi said. “We play competitively at our home club too, but this is different, and it’s good. Out here you don’t have that level of comfort that we do at home.”

David Small, a former linebacker at Purdue University, is using the Am Tour to literally get his life back on track. In 2008, Small experienced life’s ultimate double-bogey when he suffered a massive heart attack during a kidney transplant operation. He says the Am Tour has allowed him to ease back into feeling the same competitive jitters he felt in his college football days.

“You can’t really understand competition until you get out there and actually compete,” Small said. “I played a sudden death playoff last year on the Am Tour, and when I gave one putt the Phil fist pump I sort of surprised myself. I’m usually more reserved than that.”

The Am Tour, it seems, has a unique way of connecting all types of golfers with a common bond: They just want to compete.

This guy I played with last weekend said he was registered to play a tournament on the GolfAmTour in February in the Dallas area. Iron Horse Golf Club. I'd heard of the tour before but never really gave it much thought. In Texas where I live there are 20 events scheduled for 2016. Most of them are in or around the larger metropolitan areas.

Are any of you guys planning to compete? Has anyone played this Tour before? Sounds fun.

A few years ago a friend of mine from Albuquerque played the GC Am tour.  He was probably a 5 or 6 like you PJ.  He didn't do very well, but his buddy, a SkyWest airline pilot did OK and got to the semis or whatever they call them.  They had a lot of fun, but it was expensive.  I played with them both at the Sandia GC.  Good sticks.

“ We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game .”

:(

So you can imagine what it was like traveling from New Mexico.  I don't remember if the SkyWest pilot traveled for free, but he did go to Florida.

HighFade

I've been playing for about 5 years now.  It is a little pricey - $200/year for membership, and depending on the course, the entry fees are about the same as a regular round + cart.  Almost everyone takes the cart, but you can bring a caddy if you want.  But that tends to slow play even more than the glacial tournament pace.  It is flighted pretty well.  If you perform too well within your flight, you are automatically moved up to the next flight.  No sandbagging here.  If you play to your handicap, you will probably place.  The Skins game is where it's at though.  $20 gets you in the skins game, and again, flighted low gross per hole.  Hit a few good shots, and you could walk away with $75-$200.  Trophy presentation that is semi-official.  We trade cards before the round and keep opponents' score.  The guys are generally super nice, but you will occasionally run into the jerk who needs the entire world to come to a stop so he can sink his 8 inch putt.  Tempers and scores sometimes flare up.  But that is the exception to the rule.  99% of the time, it's a great group of guys paired up with very similar handicaps.  I highly recommend it if you enjoy competitive golf.

HighFade I really would like to join. Sounds like a blast. If I were younger I'd think nothing of jumping in my car and heading down the highway for a tournament.

I take it you're playing again this year?

I'm on the fence about this year.  #1 is money, but it's close to the same as joining a men's club, but I really don't like the idea of playing only one course all year.  The one thing I love about the AM tour is getting to play a different course each week.

One of the guys who's a regular in our group plays the AM Tour regularly and really loves it. He's done quite well and has placed well in the national tournaments and I think won the overall title for his flight last year (his first in the senior division).  If you do well enough, you qualify for their Master events, or something like that.  One of those is held at here at TPC Sawgrass and they play the Stadium and Valley in a two day tournament.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts. One more thing to note:  You can play a small number of tournaments (3-4?) without having to pay the membership fees.  Just the tournament registration.

I think I saw that Fade in the rules or something on their site. However, if I'm going to play in the tournament I want to win or at least have the chance. Otherwise you're just beating it around.

Well, good luck if you decide to compete this year. Keep us informed if you do.

You can win the trophy, just don't get the cash.  But you can enter the skins.

There is only one tournament near me each year; Wine Valley, great U.S. Open qualifying course. And no Senior Flights.  All of the other courses are on the western side of the state 250-300 miles away.  Too far.

I checked the results from last year's tournament.  For the Palmer Flight (4-7.9) the winning score was 74.  For the Hogan Flight (8-11.9) the winning score was 74.  For the Sarazen Flight (12-15.9) the winning score was 77.  I have played this course several times, and there is no way in hell that I can shoot 74 in a tournament.  How does a 12+ shoot +5 on a hard course?

This is the reason I gave up tournaments a long time ago.  I understand that people are moved to a lower flight based on tournament scores, but pleeeze!

Wow. That's odd. Usually in Palmer a 74-77 will win. Hogan usually around 80. That's pretty bad. They move guys way up on the tee boxes depending on hdcp, so that could explain some, but a 12 shooting 77? No way. Sounds like the local director is not policing very well. I've played in two tours (Denver and KC). And in each they kept very close tabs on tournament scores.

Each year now I start thinking about tournaments. Later I remember two reasons why I'm done with them. Like Kenny talked about.... too many sandbaggers. I don't play the Championship flight... and that's the only flight that's is legit. Secondly, I've gotten too old to compete in the Presidents/first flight. Semi-legit. However, I'll probably play in the club championship later this summer. Maybe. Sadly, It was sandbagged too and the pro didn't seem to GARA.

Mr_Theoo

I don't know if you have a golf week am tour in your area. That's what I did last year and it was a nice challenge. Joining isn't expensive and the fees for each event aren't too bad either.

I'm a Golf Channel Am Tour member and have been since 2013. I absolutely love it! Handicaps are pretty legit because they're calculated for actual tournament scores (not your home course scores) so the only way to sand bag is to pay and play in 5+ rounds (100+ dollars each round) and purposely card super high numbers, which really is pointless considering the winnings are all gift cards and max out at about $250 for a large field. Theyre always adding new cities to the local tours but the best part of the Am Tour are the 2-day 36 hole majors that are typically at higher end/resort courses such as Pinehurst, Chambers Bay, TPC Sawgrass, Kiawah, PGA National, Innisbrook, PGA West, Grayhawk, Blackwolf Run and a ton of other high end PGA courses. Sure it can get a little expensive but it's competitive golf at its finest and you really won't find this type of experience anywhere else. There is a $200 member fee but it goes down to $170 every year after that and there's no obligation to play, you can play in 1 tourney or 50! It's all up to you, your budget, your schedule and your desire to play. People always say, "I have to get better or take lessons before joining the tour." But everything is flighted based on handicaps from scratch to 20+ and I've seen guys win big tournaments shooting a 95 in the higher flights! So there's really no better time to join to compete. Hope to see some of y'all out there!

I've thought this looked fun too, but there are no tournaments close to me....maybe if some more start popping up i would give it a try

:honma:

+1, or maybe +/-1, :-)

The GWAM is a less expensive alternative if it's available.  Pick your flight based upon self-evaluation of ability.  Tournament rounds are tracked, tournament HC generated, and automatic promotion occurs based upon scoring. In my region, we have reciprocal rights to play in NJ/Phila region.  I've played two partial seasons, and the downside is that the rounds, particularly for flights C and higher take FOREVER.

St. Petersburg Country Club’s course opened for play in 1924. Its architect was Herbert Strong, a golf professional who had arrived in the US from his native England in 1905. Mr. Strong has more than 20 course designs to his credit, including Canterbury CC in Cleveland, Engineers on Long Island the original course at Saucon Valley in Pennsylvania. Other Florida designs include Vero Beach CC and the Ocean Course at the Ponte Vedra Beach Club. The historic course hosted the St. Pete Open, a regular stop on the PGA tour, twelve times, the last in 1964. Its full length at that time, approximately 6600 yards, was about the norm for tour courses of the day. St. Pete Open winners on this course include Sam Snead, Cary Middlecoff and Raymond Floyd, who won for the first time here in 1963.

  8. Which Golf Channel Am Tour host is the best vacation destination

It's hard to turn down playing on U.S. Open venues (Chambers Bay and Pinehurst No. 2) and PGA Tour stops (the TPC of Sawgrass, Disney and PGA National), but if I were forced to pick one Am Tour major, I'd tee it up at Blackwolf Run for the Midwest Classic May 19-20. It offers arguably the best combination of tracks on the circuit, although ...
