Help! My Miserable Witch of a Grandmother Is Sucking the Life From My Family.

In we’re prudence, prudence asks readers for their thoughts on a question that has her stumped. the answer is available only for slate plus members..

Each week in the Tuesday column, Prudence asks readers for their thoughts on a question that has her stumped. She’ll post her final thoughts on the matter on Fridays.

Here’s this week’s dilemma and answer; thanks to Cut ‘N Run, Tough Love, Emily, Lindsey S., Validation Baby, and Keep Doing for their ideas!

Dear Prudence,

My grandmother was never warm and fuzzy when I was growing up. Now she is a miserable old witch draining the life out of my mom and uncle. She isn’t satisfied with anything and makes demands like a spoiled toddler. She uses a walker but expects my mom to run home every day to make her lunch. My uncle needs to drop everything if she can’t figure out how to watch her shows. She ignores her doctors and can’t make an appointment that doesn’t conflict with anyone else’s schedule. She insults everyone and tries to guilt you if you call her on it. “Oh, you just want me to die.” “Oh, you want to throw me out in the streets.” “Oh, you want to put me in a home like a dog.”

Worse, she dotes on her monster of a dog that bites. It looks more like a blimp with teeth and my grandmother will feed it human food so it poops all over the floor. I live three hours away and when I visit to give my mother some respite, I try not to interact with my grandmother. I deep clean, work on the yard, and go grocery shopping. I got into a fight with my grandmother because after I came home and started to unload the groceries, she demanded I run across town and pick up a rotisserie chicken. Not for us but for her dog. I told her no and she swore at me. I put the groceries up and took a long walk before I did something I regretted. Now my mom and uncle both blame me for setting off my grandmother. I am tired. I feel guilty that my mom and uncle have to handle this, but I can’t deal with it. They refuse to look for governmental aid or sell her old house and look for a retirement home. I don’t know what to do. Help!

—Kids Aren’t a Retirement Plan

Dear Retirement Plan,

You don’t know what to do because you’re asking yourself, “What should I do to fix this situation for my mother and uncle, who have a totally different set of priorities and values than I do and a higher tolerance for putting up with abuse?” rather than, “What should I do to prevent future negative interactions with my grandmother that end up leading to my being unfairly blamed for her behavior.” The latter question is a lot easier to answer. As many readers (several of whom have been in similar situations) said when I shared your letter, you can simply stop. No more three hour drives to show up and get yelled at. No more pushing people to sell her home. No more expecting your mom and uncle to set the same boundaries you would set, or take any action to make their own lives easier. To put it bluntly, you need to give up.

Cut ‘N Run: Growing up, my father had the same relationship with his mother, one of being a dedicated and doting son who would make way too much time for what I perceived as the smallest things for his ailing-but-not-that-ailing mother. I swore to myself I would never do that for either parent, and yet here we are 30 years later and my dad has become his mom and I’ve become my dad. I explain all this to say: You can’t really determine why your mom and uncle are putting up with this. Maybe it’s out of love, maybe it’s out of necessity, maybe it’s out of guilt. I know it hurts you to see them labor and for no reward that you can see, but maybe there’s a sense of closeness or closure that they’re getting out of it. My advice to you? If you don’t have to be involved … don’t be. Don’t make work for yourself, don’t put yourself in a situation you hate, and don’t make things “worse” for your mom and uncle. They’re going to do what they’re going to do for their mom, and you have the joy of not having to do or participate in any of it, so don’t!
Tough Love: Not her monkey, not her circus. If her mom and uncle want to spend their lives catering to grandmother’s every demand, that’s on them. The letter writer does not have any obligation to be a part of that mess. If she WANTS, she can continue to do whatever she’s comfortable doing to help grandmother out, but beyond that it’s not her responsibility—especially if grandmother is being abusive.
Emily: I am literally in the exact situation with my grandmother, right down to the awful dog. The only thing I can do for my mental health is to just let it happen. If my mother and her siblings (all in their 60s!) want to live under a tyrant’s thumb, I just let them. They are adults, as am I (a woman in my 30s). I used to offer a supportive ear to my mother to let her vent, but even that upsets me now because no one is setting boundaries or making positive changes. Except for me—by removing myself from the dynamic. I don’t go over there anymore. And I don’t discuss grandma’s antics. If they want to suffer … ok … we are all adults. But I refuse to let myself get sucked in!
Lindsey S.: Grandma is mean and disrespectful, so don’t put yourself in a position to help out any longer. Show up and take your mom out for lunch and then stop by to say hi to grandma if she can manage a short cordial visit. You are not obligated to do everyone’s bidding, and the other adults involved are responsible for setting their own boundaries and expectations with her. It may be worthwhile to have a brief conversation with your mom and uncle to let them know you have a new plan, should you go that route. “Mom, I love you guys but I can’t help out at grandmas any more right now. I’d love to see you when I’m in town but I can’t stay unless things change.”
Validation, Baby: Grandma isn’t going to become a different person; she’s not going to get better. She’s not going to grow kinder, she’s not going to stop feeding her dog the wrong food and leaving the mess for others to clean up, she’s not going to stop trying to guilt trip everyone around her. There is nothing you or your mother or uncle can do or say to make her change—you need to bring in the big guns. Contact the agencies that can help your mom or uncle get a conservatorship (some states call it a guardianship), and those that can document her behaviors, both mental and physical, and her ability to make financial decisions for herself. Grandma doesn’t have to like it, but she probably won’t be able to get it overturned. She isn’t capable of making wise decisions. Since your uncle and mom won’t do it, I’m here to validate you: Great job, LW! You defined what YOUR boundaries were and didn’t cave. You can’t control your grandmother’s reaction, including what she may say to your mom and uncle if she runs into one of your boundaries. You ALSO cannot control whether your mom and uncle wise up to the fact that they themselves can set boundaries and let Grandma be mad. What you can do is listen nonjudgmentally to your mom and say, “Gosh, that sounds frustrating. You deserve better.” And if mom ever comes around and wants to know what better looks like, that’s when you can ask questions like “can you imagine a world in which you told Grandma, ‘I’ll need you to reschedule that appointment for when I’m free or else take an Uber’?” Been there and can verify that if you learn to detach from trying to fix anything, you will feel a lot better. You can’t control how anyone else feels here!

“Detach from fixing anything,” as that last reader suggested, really needs to be your motto. And honestly, you’re in a pretty good position to do it. Your mom and uncle aren’t demanding that you help out. There are already two adults on duty. You don’t have to worry that your grandmother will suffer if you aren’t pitching in.

You obviously care about your mom and want to lighten her load, but maybe a better plan is to ask her what you can do for her from a distance—getting groceries delivered? Helping with medical paperwork? Researching some of the resources listed above? Maybe she’d enjoy the occasional weekend getaway with you, or just a regular phone call where you listen to her vent. If money isn’t an issue, you could, as the reader quoted below suggested, hire a caregiver to offer her a little relief. It’s also possible that she, on some level, finds the current arrangement rewarding and doesn’t want you to take anything off her plate.

But one more thing to think about is the future:

Keep Doing What You’re Doing: I think your current strategy works? You help out your mom to give her a desperately needed break and do other tasks that don’t involve grandma. Obviously, you’re a caring person, but you have to protect your own sanity, so I don’t think what you’re doing is wrong. Maybe absolve yourself of the guilt you feel that your mom is dealing with this, since like you said, she’s refusing to see what other services might be available. That being said, there are two things I might consider doing: One, if you have the financial means, hire a caretaker to come in one day a week so your mom gets a meaningful day off from caretaking. Two, bring up long term planning about your grandmother with your mom. What if your mom gets hit by a bus or runs into her own health problems, what should the plan for grandma be? You can’t provide the level of caretaking that she’s able to provide and there needs to be a plan B.

The advice to make a Plan B is very smart. Because there may come a time when you’re the only adult in the family who is physically and cognitively capable of providing day-to-day care for your grandmother. But that doesn’t mean it would be a good situation for anyone for you to do it. So, even if your mom and uncle won’t engage with you on this topic, you should come up with something yourself so that when “Detach from fixing anything” is no longer an option, you have a choice that feels better than “Try to fix everything, get mistreated, and live in misery.” Because as you know, that’s no way to live.

New Slice of Life Anime is the Perfect Introduction to the Genre For One Big Reason

One of crunchyroll's best new anime has the most heartbreakingly realistic portrayals of death in years, 10 things about bleach that have aged poorly.

  • Shouzo and Ine's story teaches us to seize the day and cherish moments with loved ones.
  • Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again explores the passage of time and the importance of living without regrets.
  • The anime celebrates life, marriage, wisdom, and family, providing a valuable lesson to its viewers.

Warning: SPOILERS for Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again episode #11

Crunchyroll ’s series Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again is not the typical laid-back slice-of-life anime . The anime shows the everyday lives of the elderly couple, Shouzou and Ine Saitou, and how they manage their new, unexpected youthfulness after eating a magical golden apple. However, the anime discloses soon that the couple has only changed physically, and their time is still shortened since their hourglasses keep running out of sand, which gives away some tear-jerking moments.

Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again is a relaxing Iyashikei anime that, unfortunately, has flown under the radar of many viewers. While it is a cozy, wholesome series with an overall simple premise, its message is much deeper than that; it's a story that celebrates life.

Episode #11 of the series revealed the fate of Shouzou and Ine in an emotional, heartbreaking finale that delivered one of the most bittersweet final scenes in anime, ending Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again in the best possible way.

Bartender: Glass of God is officially a slice of life but there are many aspects of it that feel more like sports manga and even classic shonen.

Shouzo and Ine Died the Way They Wanted

The saitou couple lived a fulfilling life together..

Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again’s episode #9 revealed that Ine only had 7 days left to live. Shouzo then, thanks to the intervention of the goddess of the shrine, wishes to sacrifice half of his lifespan to share it with Ine and declares that they will die together that way, so neither of them will have to face the sadness of watching the other pass away.

Shouzo’s wish is fulfilled in the final episode of the series, because rather than give them some kind of miracle to extend their lifetimes, the anime ends with a poignant scene of the couple peacefully dying together as they fall asleep, remembering their loved ones, and sitting under the tree that they planted together when they got married.

Dead Dead Demon's episode #4 has the sudden death of a major character, and it has one of the most realistic handling of death of any anime.

The ending, although anticipated, still leaves a sense of melancholy; however, Shouzo and Ine died without regrets and showcased the true definition of love, not only “till death do us part,” but also how is maintained through the years. It’s a perfect ending for a story whose main message is the passage of time and how it affects everybody, not only old people, showing how things change with the years: businesses close, people move to big cities, and some jobs become insignificant.

Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again 's ending teaches that there's nothing that can be done to stop time , so people should seize the day and cherish the moments they spend with their loved ones.

Grandpa And Grandma Turn Young Again Is A Real Lesson In Life.

Shouzou and ine's story gives viewers an uplifting perspective on life..

Is there anything you’d want to do if you were young again?

The anime starts with a question that may strike a chord in some people, especially those who feel unfulfilled with their lives. However, when Shouzou and Ine actually face this situation themselves, their lives don’t change much. They keep living as they have for the last sixty years, except that they can do things with a little more ease with younger bodies. The reason for this is explained by the quote that Ine said to Mino in episode #10.

You should do everything you want to do now, while you still can. As long as you have courage and determination, you can do anything.

Shouzo and Ine lived how they wanted , and they had no regrets or other wishes in their lives. This inspired Mino and Shouta, who continued to take care of their grandparents’ orchard as a couple, loving each other just like them with an unbreakable relationship and inexhaustible love, as proved by that golden apple that also appeared to them. This teaches that people, whether young or old, like Shouzou and Ine, should strive to make the most of the time they have.

The anime celebrates the happiness of being alive, the beauty of marriage, the wisdom of the elderly, and the importance of cherishing family and enjoying the present, which gives a great lesson in life: people should do everything they love, be with the people they love, and say the words they want to say. All of this confirms that Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again got the perfect ending to Shouzou and Ine's story, which could easily become the best finale out of all Crunchyroll's Spring 2024 animes .

The Visit Ending, Explained: What’s Wrong With the Grandparents?

of The Visit Ending, Explained: What’s Wrong With the Grandparents?

In M. Night Shyamalan’s 2015 horror film, ‘The Visit,’ the audience accompanies a pair of young protagonists on a trip that leads to more menacing outcomes than one expects from a visit to Grandma’s house. After their distant grandparents, Nana and Pop Pop, reach out to teenage sibling duo Becca and Tyler, the pair takes the former up on their invitation for a week-long stay. However, upon arrival, armed with several cameras for Becca’s documentary, the two quickly begin noticing the strange happenings that seem to occur at the house after nightfall. Thus, the kids find themselves fending for themselves as each day unravels more erratic behavior by their aging grandparents, with the night bringing something more sinister.

The found footage film builds a compelling thriller narrative that gradually boosts its suspense until the final act delivers a startling and much-anticipated plot twist that fans have come to expect from the filmmaker. Nonetheless, the same conclusive twist may have left some of the viewers with a few questions. SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Visit Plot Synopsis

In her late teens, Loretta Jamison ran away with a substitute teacher from her high school, Corin, causing a rift between herself and her parents. As a result, years later, after Corin has abandoned his family, Loretta’s 15-year-old daughter, Becca, and 14-year-old Tyler have never met their grandparents. However, their distant relationship stands to change when the old couple reaches out to their grandkids, extending a home-visit invitation. Even though Loretta is against the idea, she doesn’t try to stop her children after they decide to visit her childhood home.

As such, while Loretta leaves for a cruise with her boyfriend, her kids take the train to visit their grandparents with promises of routine Skype calls. Becca, an aspiring filmmaker, decides to document the entire thing in hopes of learning the specifics about her mother and grandparents’ falling out. Consequently, Bella and Fredrick Spencer arrive at the train station on Monday morning to pick up their grandkids with enthusiastic smiles. Their first day together goes smoothly, and as it comes to an end, the kids’ grandpa, Pop Pop, instructs them about a 9:30 bedtime rule.

Although the kids don’t think of it much at first, Becca learns the merit of following through with the rule after she ventures out for a midnight snack and witnesses her Nana, sick and frantically throwing up. Even more frightening, the morning after, the woman abruptly and manically chases the kids under the house’s crawlspace during an impromptu game of hide-n-seek. Throughout the day, the kids’ concern grows further after noticing a few disturbing things about Pop Pop, such as his lack of bowel control and tendency to attack strangers in a fit of paranoia.

The following night, Tyler’s worries grow after he spots Nana wildly scratching at the walls outside the kids’ guest room in a stark state of undress. However, after Becca asks Pop Pop about the older woman’s condition, she receives a plausible answer about Nana’s sundowning issue, establishing her concerning after-hours behavior is similar to sleepwalking.

The explanation satisfies Becca, who attempts to return to her mission to learn about her mother’s relationship with Nana and Pop Pop. Still, she doesn’t make much progress since the topic seems to trigger a violent episode in her grandmother. Meanwhile, Tyler remains weary of his grandparents’ actions and insists they should spy on them by setting up cameras in the living room. Although Becca is initially against the idea, she agrees after walking in on Pop Pop with a rifle’s barrel in his mouth.

Even so, the plan backfires when Nana spots the camera on her nightly manic episode and attempts to break into the kids’ room armed with a knife. Once Becca realizes their lives may be in danger after reviewing the night’s footage, she decides to ask Loretta to pick them up on account of the dangerous circumstances. However, the kids are in for a big surprise when they show the elderly couple to their mother from a window, only to learn that the people they have spent the past few days with are not their grandparents.

The Visit Ending: Who Are The Old Couple? What Did They Do To The Real Grandparents?

As a slow burn of mourning suspense and horror, the film reveals Nana and Pop Pop’s concerning attributes in slow bouts. At first, the behavior that the couple exhibits can be easily explained as a condition of their old age, with sundowning, memory issues, and paranoia forming the baseline. Yet, as the film progresses, the old couple becomes more and more dangerous— first toward themselves and then the kids.

grandma visit story good ending

Due to Loretta’s dramatic exit from her parents’ house, the woman seldom speaks to the couple, even as she regularly calls the kids. Furthermore, a seemingly innocent accident damages Becca’s webcam, robbing the mother of any visual cues. Therefore, it isn’t until Thursday morning, when Becca and Tyler have begun fearing for their lives, that Loretta glimpses at the old couple. Consequently, she realizes all this time, her kids have been living with a pair of strangers who are pretending to be their grandparents.

The revelation immediately sets Loretta into action, who tries to contact the cops and reach her kids as soon as possible. In the meantime, she advises her kids to seek help from the neighbors to put distance between themselves and the imposters. Nevertheless, the old couple prevents Becca and Tyler from leaving the house with the idea of a family game night. Thus, with tension in the air, the kids find themselves enduring a game of Yahtzee until the old woman’s incoming mental episode gives Becca an excuse to slip away.

Using the opportunity to explore the house and learn about the imposters, Becca ventures into the forbidden basement, where she suspects her actual grandparents to be. Inside, she finds all the answers to her questions as Becca’s hunch turns out to be true in the worst way possible.

As it would turn out, the imposter old couple is a pair of psychiatric hospital patients, where the actual Bella and Patrick Spencer volunteered. The psychotic couple believed they were from an alien planet, Sinmorfitellia. As such, the pair drowned their own kids inside a well that they believed to hold a passage to the alien planet. For the same reason, they were being under monitoring in the psychic hospital.

Nonetheless, the couple escaped their bounds after the Spencers revealed their plans for a family reunion with their grandkids. Envious of the other couple, the imposters, Claire and Mitchell, killed the former pair and overtook their identities to spend the week with Becca and Tyler. Consequently, the duo managed to evade outsiders anytime they came looking for them at the house and ultimately killed their neighbor, Stacey, when she realized their reality.

Soon after Becca learns this truth, Mitchell locks her up in a room with a psychotic Claire, undergoing her violent episode. Despite their earlier attempts at domestic bliss, the couple’s instincts compel them to harm the children. Nevertheless, before the older woman can choke Becca to death, the girl manages to get her hands on a mirror shard and stabs her attacker to death. Afterward, she rushes to her younger brother’s aid, whom Mitchel is psychologically torturing.

However, with his sister’s element of surprise, Tyler manages to overpower Mitchell, unleashing raw rage and bashing the older man to death by slamming the refrigerator door at his head. Ultimately, after killing the old couple pretending to be their grandparents, Becca and Tyler make it out of the experience alive and reunite with their mother.

Why Did Loretta Stop Talking To Her Parents?

By the film’s end, Loretta’s sore relationship with her parents remains the one last mystery. Arguably, the woman’s reluctance to speak to her parents played a part in the kids’ entrapment since the latter had no point of reference to distinguish their relatives from strangers. Furthermore, part of Becca’s curiosity about her grandparents stemmed from Loretta’s refusal to speak about them to her own kids.

grandma visit story good ending

As such, after Becca and Tyler have returned to the safety of their home, Loretta sits down for one last interview for her daughter’s documentary, where she speaks about her past with her parents. When 19-year-old Loretta tried to run away from home with Corin, her high school teacher, the former’s parents wanted to stop her. Nevertheless, the same only resulted in an altercation where Loretta hit her mother, followed by the former’s father hitting his daughter.

Therefore, Loretta’s last day on the farm gave birth to several familial complications. Although Loretta’s parents tried to apologize and solve things afterward, the woman continued to avoid them years and years into the future. For the same reason, Loretta imparts a lesson to her daughter to never hold grudges so hard that they end up ruining things. In turn, Becca, who despises her father for abandoning them, decides to learn from her mother’s mistakes. Unlike Loretta, who refused to speak to her parents, leading to regret after their death, Becca chooses to include home videos of her father in the documentary to close the narrative as a sign of her forgiveness.

92-year-old grandma and grandson are on a mission to visit every US national park together

grandma visit story good ending

Brad Ryan, 41, and his 92-year-old grandmother, Joy Ryan, are nearing the finish line on a goal they once thought was impossible: visiting all 63 U.S. national parks together.

The duo from Duncan Falls, Ohio, kicked off their adventure in October 2015, when Brad was looking for a way to spend a three-day weekend during veterinary school. He said the idea was sparked by a conversation he had with "Grandma Joy" about his past adventures on the Appalachian Trail.

"I felt bad that she was always living vicariously through my stories," Brad told "GMA." "And so just knowing that she had never seen deserts and mountains and the ocean and these incredible wild places on Earth, it just felt like a responsibility that I had to her to make sure that she had some memories to take away in her life story as well."

Brad invited his grandma on a weekend trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, anticipating it would be their only excursion together.

"You don't assume going into that that your 85-year-old grandmother going with you on a camping trip is going to be anything less than challenging," Brad said. "That was my fault. That was my misperception of what age means and more importantly, what her spirit would allow her to do."

"I've always tried to be positive in my life and it didn't hurt to try something once," Grandma Joy said. "I didn't want to have to regret the next day that you didn't do it."

grandma visit story good ending

Brad began documenting their adventures on Instagram and Facebook to the account @GrandmaJoysRoadtrip in 2019, and they quickly acquired a large following. Today, they boast nearly 58k followers on Instagram.

"We didn't expect that," Grandma Joy said. "He just put that on the social media so the people back home in Duncan Falls knew what we were doing."

National Parks Services Chief of Public Affairs and Chief Spokesperson Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles said in a statement that "Grandma Joy, and her grandson Brad, are an inspiration to us all."

"National parks are best enjoyed with the people we love, and it is clear to see that Joy and Brad share a special bond, which has been strengthened by their time traveling together," Anzelmo-Sarles said.

They had visited 29 parks until the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to slow down.

"All we could do was hope that things would change and that those opportunities would still be there and then be grateful for everything that we had been able to do and see up until that point," Brad said.

In July 2021, Grandma Joy and Brad embarked on one of their wildest adventures yet: visiting the eight National Parks of Alaska, where they went white water rafting down class three rapids, hiked near glaciers and fjords and crossed a wild animal encounter off Grandma Joy's bucket list.

"I always wanted to see the bears get the fish and I finally got to see it. And it was fun, it really was," Grandma Joy said.

grandma visit story good ending

After years of planning and traveling , Grandma Joy and Brad are almost able to hang up their hiking boots: the duo has just one national park left to explore, the National Park of American Samoa which is over 6,700 miles from their home town of Duncan Falls.

While they're looking forward to the day they visit their final park, Brad said completing their extraordinary feat will be "bittersweet."

"It's been a grand adventure, it really has," Grandma Joy said. "It's really been a beautiful, beautiful time. And I wouldn't trade it for anything."

As for advice from Brad and Grandma Joy, they encourage everyone to seek out opportunities for exploration.

"We realize that not everybody is going to be able to travel to every U.S. National Park," Brad said. "But there is some adventure to be found in every corner of of the country and we hope that people will go out and seek that adventure."

Morning Rundown: Israelis strike in demand of cease-fire, Biden and Harris reject Arlington Cemetery invite claims, and what heatwaves do to your body

Members of the Kennedy family denounce RFK Jr.'s decision to endorse Trump

Image: 2024 Democratic National Convention: Day 2 chicago dnc Jack Schlossberg political politics

WASHINGTON — Multiple members of the Kennedy family denounced Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s decision to endorse former President Donald Trump, calling the move a "betrayal."

"We want an America filled with hope and bound together by a shared vision of a brighter future, a future defined by individual freedom, economic promise and national pride," said a statement signed by five of the former independent presidential candidate's siblings.

"We believe in Harris and Walz," the statement continued. "Our brother Bobby's decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story."

The statement includes signatures from Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Chris Kennedy and Rory Kennedy.

Joe Kennedy III, a grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, reacted to the statement, sharing it on X and writing that it was "well said."

Separately, the former candidate's cousin Jack Schlossberg said that he has "never been less surprised in my life."

"Been saying it for over a year — RFKjr is for sale, works for Trump. Bedfellows and loving it," he posted to X. "Kamala Harris is for the people — the easiest decision of all time just got easier."

Schlossberg is the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy.

Many members of the Kennedy family have been publicly critical of the independent's presidential bid, instead vocalizing their support for first President Joe Biden and now Harris.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Friday that he would withdraw from the presidential race and back Trump. However, he said that he would only remove his name from the ballot in "about 10 battleground states where my presence would be a spoiler." He encouraged voters in states where he remains on the ballot to still support him.

"These are the principled causes that persuaded me to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent, and now to throw my support to President Trump," he said during his Friday remarks. "The causes were: Free speech, the war in Ukraine, and the war on our children."

Harris campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon said in a statement that the Harris campaign is for "any American out there who is tired of Donald Trump and looking for a new way forward."

"Even if we do not agree on every issue, Kamala Harris knows there is more that unites us than divides us: respect for our rights, public safety, protecting our freedoms, and opportunity for all," she said in a bid to attract Kennedy supporters.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

grandma visit story good ending

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.

The Ending Of The Visit Explained

The Visit M. Night Shyamalan Olivia DeJonge Deanna Dunagan

Contains spoilers for  The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan is notorious for using dramatic twists towards the endings of his films, some of which are pulled off perfectly and add an extra layer of depth to a sprawling story (hello, Split ). Some of the director's other offerings simply keep the audience on their toes rather than having any extra subtext or hidden meaning. Shyamalan's 2015 found-footage horror-comedy  The Visit , which he wrote and directed, definitely fits in the latter category, aiming for style over substance.

The Visit follows 15-year-old Becca Jamison (Olivia DeJonge) and her 13-year-old brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) when they spend the week with their mother's estranged parents, who live in another town. Loretta (played by WandaVision 's Kathryn Hahn ) never explained to her children why she separated herself away from her parents, but clearly hopes the weekend could help bring the family back together.

Although The Visit occasionally toys with themes of abandonment and fear of the unknown, it wasn't particularly well-received by critics on its initial release, as many struggled with its bizarre comedic tone in the found-footage style. So, after Tyler and his camera record a number of disturbing occurrences like Nana (Deanna Dunagan) projectile-vomiting in the middle of the night and discovering "Pop Pop"'s (Peter McRobbie) mountain of used diapers, it soon becomes clear that something isn't right with the grandparents.

Here's the ending of  The Visit  explained.

The Visit's twist plays on expectations

The Visit Deanna Dunagan Peter McRobbie M. Night Shyamalan

Because Shyamalan sets up the idea of the separation between Loretta and her parents very early on — and doesn't show their faces before Becca and Tyler meet them — the film automatically creates a false sense of security. Even more so since the found-footage style restricts the use of typical exposition methods like flashbacks or other scenes which would indicate that Nana and Pop Pop aren't who they say they are. Audiences have no reason to expect that they're actually two escapees from a local psychiatric facility.

The pieces all come together once Becca discovers her  real grandparents' corpses in the basement, along with some uniforms from the psychiatric hospital. It confirms "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" escaped from the institution and murdered the Jamisons because they were a similar age, making it easy to hide their whereabouts from the authorities. And they would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.)

However, after a video call from Loretta reveals that the pair aren't her parents, the children are forced to keep up appearances — but the unhinged duo start to taunt the siblings. Tyler in particular is forced to face his fear of germs as "Pop Pop" wipes dirty diapers in his face. The germophobia is something Shyamalan threads through Tyler's character throughout The Visit,  and the encounter with "Pop Pop" is a basic attempt of showing he's gone through some kind of trial-by-fire to get over his fears.

But the Jamison kids don't take things lying down: They fight back in vicious fashion — a subversion of yet another expectation that young teens might would wait for adults or law enforcement officers to arrive before doing away with their tormentors.

Its real message is about reconciliation

The Visit M. Night Shyamalan Kathryn Hahn

By the time Becca stabs "Nana" to death and Tyler has repeatedly slammed "Pop-Pop"'s head with the refrigerator door, their mother and the police do arrive to pick up the pieces. In a last-ditch attempt at adding an emotional undertone, Shyamalan reveals Loretta left home after a huge argument with her parents. She hit her mother, and her father hit her in return. But Loretta explains that reconciliation was always on the table if she had stopped being so stubborn and just reached out. One could take a domino-effect perspective and even say that Loretta's stubbornness about not reconnecting and her sustained distance from her parents put them in exactly the vulnerable position they needed to be for "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" to murder them.

Loretta's confession actually mirrors something "Pop-Pop" told Tyler (before his run-in with the refrigerator door): that he and "Nana" wanted to spend one week as a normal family before dying. They should've thought about that before murdering a pair of innocent grandparents, but here we are.

So, is The Visit  trying to say that if we don't keep our families together, they'll be replaced by imposters and terrify our children? Well, probably not. The Visit tries to deliver a message about breaking away from old habits, working through your fears, and stop being so stubborn over arguments that don't have any consequences in the long-run. Whether it actually sticks the landing on all of those points is still up for debate.

A charming, warmhearted novel from the author of the New York Times bestseller A Man Called Ove.

She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

WINNER of the NATIONAL BOOK AWARD and A NEW YORK TIMES TOP 10 BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

A finalist for the Kirkus Prize, Andrew Carnegie Medal, Aspen Words Literary Prize, and a New York Times bestseller, this majestic, stirring, and widely praised novel from two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward, the story of a family on a journey through rural Mississippi, is a “tour de force” ( O, The Oprah Magazine ) and a timeless work of fiction that is destined to become a classic.

Jesmyn Ward’s historic second National Book Award–winner is “perfectly poised for the moment” ( The New York Times ), an intimate portrait of three generations of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. “Ward’s writing throbs with life, grief, and love… this book is the kind that makes you ache to return to it” ( Buzzfeed ).

Jojo is thirteen years old and trying to understand what it means to be a man. He doesn’t lack in fathers to study, chief among them his Black grandfather, Pop. But there are other men who complicate his understanding: his absent White father, Michael, who is being released from prison; his absent White grandfather, Big Joseph, who won’t acknowledge his existence; and the memories of his dead uncle, Given, who died as a teenager.

His mother, Leonie, is an inconsistent presence in his and his toddler sister’s lives. She is an imperfect mother in constant conflict with herself and those around her. She is Black and her children’s father is White. She wants to be a better mother but can’t put her children above her own needs, especially her drug use. Simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she’s high, Leonie is embattled in ways that reflect the brutal reality of her circumstances.

When the children’s father is released from prison, Leonie packs her kids and a friend into her car and drives north to the heart of Mississippi and Parchman Farm, the State Penitentiary. At Parchman, there is another thirteen-year-old boy, the ghost of a dead inmate who carries all of the ugly history of the South with him in his wandering. He too has something to teach Jojo about fathers and sons, about legacies, about violence, about love.

Rich with Ward’s distinctive, lyrical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic and unforgettable family story and “an odyssey through rural Mississippi’s past and present” ( The Philadelphia Inquirer ).

Summary of the Story’s Themes and Plot

Let’s dive into the juicy details of the story and see what themes and plot points make ‘A Visit to Grandmother’ a classic, shall we?

Written by William Melvin Kelley, this short story takes us through a journey of family reconciliation and the generational divide that exists between a father and son.

The story revolves around the protagonist, Charles, who’s summoned by his sister to visit their father, a successful businessman, who resides in the city.

As Charles engages in conversation with his father, he realizes that his father has a deep-seated guilt over neglecting his family in his pursuit of success.

The father’s admission to his son sets the stage for a heart-warming reconciliation between the two, as they come to terms with their past.

The story highlights the importance of communication and the need for parents to prioritize their family, rather than just their career.

The generational divide between the father and son is also a prominent theme in the story, as the father’s values and beliefs differ greatly from his son’s.

Overall, ‘A Visit to Grandmother’ is a touching tale of a father and son’s journey towards reconciliation, and it serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of family.

Analysis of the Character of Charles

Charles’ character is intriguing and his actions create a sense of unease in the reader. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Charles is a complex character with a troubled past.

Exploring Charles’ psyche reveals that he’s deeply resentful of his brother, and this resentment has manifested in a desire for material success and a need to prove himself. His behavior towards his siblings is cold and distant, and it’s clear that he’s not interested in maintaining a close relationship with them.

When it comes to his relationships with his siblings, Charles is distant and aloof. He seems to hold a grudge against them for their perceived successes and seems to resent the fact that he hasn’t achieved the same level of success. This resentment is evident in his behavior towards his brother, and it’s clear that he’s deeply unhappy with his life.

Despite his success, he’s not satisfied, and his behavior towards his family is a reflection of this.

In conclusion, exploring Charles’ character adds depth and complexity to the story and highlights the importance of family relationships and the impact that past experiences can have on a person’s psyche.

Examination of the Story’s Themes

When examining the themes of ‘A Visit to Grandmother,’ it’s important to consider the complex dynamics of family relationships.

The story portrays the struggles and tensions that arise between siblings and parents, as well as the complicated history that can exist between generations.

Additionally, the themes of race and prejudice are central to the story, as Charles’ experiences with discrimination and his father’s own biases are revealed.

Finally, the themes of forgiveness and healing are explored through Charles’ decision to confront his father and the potential for reconciliation between the two.

Family Dynamics

You’ll notice the complicated family dynamics as you read the story, making it relatable to anyone who’s experienced similar tensions within their own family.

The parent-child relationships in ‘A Visit to Grandmother’ are strained, particularly between the two brothers, Chig and John. Chig feels neglected by John, who’s moved to the city and become successful, leaving Chig to take care of their mother and work on the family farm.

On the other hand, John feels resentment towards Chig for staying behind and not achieving the same level of success as him. This generational conflict is further highlighted by the father’s preference for John, leading to Chig feeling like he’s constantly in his brother’s shadow.

The story also touches on the dynamics between parents and their children. The father, a successful doctor, has neglected his wife and children in pursuit of his career, leading to resentment and bitterness from both his wife and sons.

The mother, meanwhile, has become emotionally distant from her children, perhaps due to the pain of her husband’s neglect, leading to a sense of abandonment from her sons.

The family dynamics in ‘A Visit to Grandmother’ are complex and nuanced, showing the different ways in which family members can hurt and misunderstand each other.

Race and Prejudice

The story delves into the deep-rooted issues of race and prejudice, showcasing how African Americans were treated as second-class citizens in the 1950s.

The main character, Charles, is a successful African American man who has worked hard to achieve his position. However, despite his accomplishments, Charles still faces discrimination and racism from society.

Throughout the story, we see Charles struggle with the reality of being an African American in a predominantly white society. The prejudice he faces is not only limited to the white community, but even within his own family.

This raises awareness about the impact of racism on individuals and families, and how it can create divisions and tensions among loved ones. The story shows that discrimination is not just about the color of one’s skin, but also about the way society perceives and treats them.

Forgiveness and Healing

Although Charles faced discrimination and racism, he ultimately found healing and forgiveness within himself and his relationships.

After years of resentment towards his mother and sister for leaving him behind in the South, Charles finally confronted them and forgave them. This act of reconciliation allowed him to let go of the anger and pain that had been holding him back for so long. He was finally able to move on and start anew.

Forgiveness is a powerful tool that can bring healing and closure to even the deepest wounds. It allows us to let go of the past and embrace the present.

For Charles, forgiveness was the key to finding peace and happiness in his life. By forgiving those who had wronged him, he was able to reconcile with his family and start a new chapter in his life.

It is a lesson we can all learn from, that no matter how deep the hurt, forgiveness, and reconciliation can bring about healing and growth.

Significance of the Story in the Context of African-American Literature

Growing up in the segregated South, African-American writer James Baldwin’s short story ‘A Visit to Grandmother’ is like a key that unlocks a hidden treasure chest of African-American literature. Baldwin’s works often explore the African American experience, delving deep into the complexities of cultural identity and the struggle for recognition and acceptance. He employs a raw, unapologetic style that resonates with readers and draws them into the world of his characters.

In ‘A Visit to Grandmother,’ Baldwin paints a vivid picture of the bond between a mother and her son, and how this bond is tested by the brutality of racism and the struggle for self-acceptance. The story highlights the challenges faced by African-Americans in a society that does not value their worth, and the ways in which they navigate these challenges to find their place in the world.

Baldwin’s masterpiece is more than just a story; it is a testament to the strength and resilience of African-American culture, and a reminder of the power of literature to bridge the gap between different cultures and create a sense of understanding and empathy.

So, as you’re finishing up your analysis of ‘A Visit to Grandmother’, you might be wondering if this story is really all that significant in the grand scheme of things. After all, it’s just a short story about a family reunion, right?

But that’s the beauty of literature – even seemingly simple stories can hold a wealth of meaning and insight into the human experience. ‘A Visit to Grandmother’ may be a quick read, but it delves into themes of family dynamics, forgiveness, and the lasting effects of childhood experiences.

It’s a story that speaks to the heart of what it means to be human. Some may argue that this story is only relevant to the African-American experience and may not resonate with readers outside of that community. But that would be a disservice to the universal themes at play here.

Anyone who has ever grappled with family tensions or struggled to come to terms with their past can find something to relate to in ‘A Visit to Grandmother’. So, give this classic short story a read – you might just be surprised at how much it resonates with you.
