Gstaad promenade is the main walking street in the heart of the village. It’s where the best hotels in town are situated, as well as the prime location for shopping and fine dining in the village.

The great thing about the beautiful Gstaad promenade is that it looks like something out of a fairytale no matter when you visit. During the warmer months, the hotels and traditional houses are adorned with countless flower pots, which add an abundance of color to the heart of the village.

In the winter months, the entire street is adorned with Christmas decorations, so the flower pots are swapped for Christmas trees and fairy lights. The promenade looks a bit more magical in the winter thanks to all the beautiful decorations and sparkly lights, especially under the white cover of snow.

Kunsteisbahn Gstaad Ice Rink (In Winter)

If you visit Gstaad between October and mid-March, you’ll get the opportunity to go ice skating in the heart of the village. Kunsteisbahn Gstaad Ice Rink is situated on the Gstaad promenade, surrounded by charming townhouses.

Ice skating in the heart of Gstaad is truly a magical experience, and certainly one of the top activities during the winter. Just keep in mind that it’s not a free ice rink – the entrance fee is around 8 CHF for adults, and it costs just as much to rent ice skates directly at the rink.

It’s worth noting that there’s no lack of fun at this location in the summer either – the annual beach volleyball championship is held at this same location, so if you visit the village in the summer, you could still witness a spectacle in the heart of Gstaad.

Vintage Train Ride On The GoldenPass Line

The GoldenPass Belle Époque is arguably the most romantic train in the entire country. If you’re traveling to Gstaad with a partner and you want to enjoy some quality time together, consider booking a ride on this wonderful train.

The train is modeled after the Golden Mountain Pullman Express, a train from the 1930s that was built in the Orient Express style. So, even though the outside and the inside of the Swiss train feel like you’ve traveled back in time, you’re still getting all the benefits of modern trains, just with that vintage feel.

The Belle Époque interior of the train is absolutely fascinating and it will make you feel like royalty. This train runs every day between Montreux and Zweisimmen, and you can choose the ride the train in either direction.

From Gstaad, it’s only about 30 minutes to Zweisimmen by this train, and 2nd class tickets are only some 11 CHF. Le Petit Chalet

Le Petit Chalet is a cozy local restaurant in the gardens of Le Grand Bellevue Hotel . If you want to taste some delicious Swiss food in a cozy setting, this is easily one of the best restaurants in Gstaad to visit.

It’s situated a bit outside the heart of the village, but still no more than a 5-minute walk from the village center. The restaurant is inside a log cabin, and everything about it is inspired by Swiss tradition. The furniture, the decorations, and even the menu are all obviously Swiss, which just adds a whole new level to the experience of fine dining.

This isn’t a restaurant for people who like to dress up nice and enjoy a decadent night out. You’ll be sitting on tiny wooden stools in a tiny log cabin, so it’s a more casual place. Nonetheless, the food here is absolutely delicious – the menu is short and to the point, featuring only the best local delicacies you could ask for in Gstaad. But overall, it is quite a romantic place to come with that special someone.

High-End Shopping

You wouldn’t think it if you knew nothing about the village, but Gstaad is an excellent place for high-end shopping. The resort town has always been popular with the rich and famous, partly because of its excellent hotels and ski pistes, and partly because of the many boarding schools where the richest send their children.

Therefore, it makes sense that you’d find the likes of Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabanna along the main promenade of this village. Alpina Gstaad is one of the most popular hotels in the village. It’s a luxurious hotel with fine dining restaurants, a posh spa center, and spacious modern rooms. The hotel is very popular with guests who come to Gstaad to ski, but also among those who just want to be pampered during their exploration of the village.

The hotel boasts a heated outdoor pool that you can comfortably swim in when there is snow on the ground, for an epic relaxing experience. There’s also an indoor pool at the Alpina Gstaad, a fitness center, and a multitude of international restaurants.

It’s worth noting that this is a luxurious hotel, so the rooms are quite pricey. If you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodation in the village this definitely isn’t the right place for you, but if you’ve got money to spend and you enjoy the finer things in life, the Alpina is easily one of the top destinations in the village.

Fondue Caquelon Cheese Grotto

Fondue Caquelon Cheese Grotto is a popular hiking area near Gstaad and a great place to visit if you want to discover a unique tourist attraction in the region. But you shouldn’t go empty-handed – first, you should reserve a fondue backpack at any one of the dairy shops in Gstaad. Then pick up that backpack the next day, and make your way to the cheese grotto.

It’s only about a 45-minute hike from the train station in Gstaad, plus it’s accessible by public transport. When you arrive at the destination, you can enjoy your fondue just how it was intended!

After you’ve devoured all the delicious melted cheese, don’t forget to stop by the actual cheese grotto and see where the thousands of Swiss cheeses in the area are stored.

It’s worth noting that there’s only one fondue picnic area here, so head there early for the best chance of getting the spot. It’s not possible to make reservations for groups of less than six people, but you can always set up a picnic somewhere else in the area!

Hot Air Ballooning

If you want to go hot air ballooning in Switzerland , you’ll be glad to know that you can do it while you’re in Gstaad. The rides are organized in the winter, usually during January and February, so don’t miss out if you happen to visit Gstaad during that time.

You can choose from a variety of different offers. Some will include some sort of food during the flight and others won’t, plus you can choose whether you want to ride alone or with someone. The experience of flying over Gstaad in a hot air balloon and seeing the landscapes from above is absolutely magical, but it’s only for those with deeper pockets.

The rides start at around 450 CHF for a single person, and they just go up. It’s much more expensive if you want to ride in a balloon for two, and it’s even pricier if you want to be served some cheese while you’re in the air. Nonetheless, it’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and worth it if you can afford it without breaking the bank.

Gstaad Palace Hotel

Gstaad Palace Hotel is one of the best hotels in the village and a great place to stay if you’re looking for upscale accommodation in the village. Boasting spacious and beautifully decorated rooms, an excellent spa center with indoor and outdoor pools, and some amazing restaurants, you won’t ever have to leave the hotel if you don’t want to.

This castle hotel is situated just outside the heart of the village, so you’re within walking distance of all the most popular shops, restaurants, and attractions. Also, there’s a sports shop directly at the hotel, for all the guests who traveled to the village for the excellent skiing opportunities but are lacking some of the necessary equipment.

Mirage Gstaad

Mirage Gstaad is a unique tourist attraction that you can only hope will be available when you visit the place. It’s an art installation by Doug Aitken, which consists of a house fully covered in mirrors. Mirages usually happen in the desert, and the American artist wanted to attempt to recreate the experience in the snowy Alps.

This isn’t a permanent installation, so you’ll need a stroke of luck to visit it during your trip. The last time the Mirage Gstaad was open for visits was in March-May of 2022, and there’s currently no information about the timing of the next exhibit. Keep tabs on Doug Aitken’s website, if this art installation is something you really want to see during your travels in Switzerland.

Lauenensee (or Lake Lauenen) is a beautiful wildlife refuge just outside of Gstaad. From the resort village, you can either take the bus or drive to the lake, and the ride doesn’t take more than 25-30 minutes.

Buses transport passengers between Gstaad and Lake Lauenen throughout the entire year, but the bus schedule differs depending on the season. In any case, it’s possible to travel to this wonderful place whenever you visit, and you can also just drive on your own if you’re traveling with a car.

Lauenensee is an absolutely magical place that you need to see with your own eyes to believe. Its beauty is out of this world, and it’s guaranteed to leave you speechless for at least a moment or two. This is one of the best-hidden gems near Gstaad, and a great attraction to visit if you don’t want to spend your time in hotels, shops, and restaurants.

The ski resort Glacier 3000 offers guaranteed perfect slopes at the beginning and towards the end of the season with its ski lifts on the glacier.

Visit the mirage

It’s impossible not to be stunned by the Mirage house. This stunning Mirage was created by Doug Aitken and is one of his most famous works.

With a mirror covering all of its surfaces, it reflects our relationship to nature and the surrounding environment. The architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s ranch houses and California ranch houses inspired this installation.   

The mirrors are on every surface inside, so you can stroll around admiring them. By car or train from Schonried station, Mirage Gstaad is relatively easy to reach. 

Glacier 3000 and Peak Walk

Are you interested in taking a stroll in the sky someday? There is a 100-meter-long suspension bridge linking two peaks at the top of glacier 3000. The walk from peak to peak is an incredible experience. 

In the mountains, you will breathe in the mountain air, marvel at the breathtaking views, gaze at the starry skies, and have lunch at the highly recommended Botta restaurant where you can truly savor every moment.

20 snowy peaks stand to attention before you, with their snowy peaks standing to attention. A 4km long toboggan run is also available, commonly known as Eggli run, which is suitable for all ages and abilities.

• The closest airport is Bern, and from Saanen Airport, air taxis are available to the Bernese Oberland.

Located in the Canton of Bern, in southwestern Switzerland, Gstaad is a stylish resort town, resplendent with majestic mountains and abundant ski slopes.

Known as the Swiss resort with the glamourous history, and described by actress Julie Andrews as the ” last paradise in a crazy world ”, Gstaad has long been linked to a gallery of famous faces. 

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton regularly holidayed in Gstaad back in the 1970s. Since then, a parade of celebrities – including singer Madonna, designer Valentino, Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan, and of course Ms Andrews – have enjoyed the Swiss hospitality. 

There’s no disputing the elegance and style of this winter wonderland, but thankfully, you don’t have to be an A-lister to pay a visit. 

Gstaad has star appeal (and plenty of first-class hotels), but it also has a down-to-earth vibe. Despite the chilly air, a warm Alpine welcome awaits you, and a sense of tradition runs through the resort.

Come up and slow down , as they say in Gstaad. The laid-back atmosphere will allow you to do that, but with so many fun things to do in Gstaad you might find it hard to sit still! 

Aside from the ample opportunities to ski, Gstaad has plenty of cultural and sporting events to enjoy. If you’re feeling energetic you can hike, bike and play a round or two of golf. Gstaad also offers plenty of opportunities to shop until you drop, too. 

Add to this the beautiful scenery that clamours for your attention, the Bollywood connection, and a whole host of other attractions, and you start to see why Gstaad is such a hit.  

With so much going on, you won’t ever be left wondering what to do in Gstaad, but you might find yourself deliberating how to pronounce Gstaad! For the record, it’s pronounced Shtad. Now we’ve got that sorted out, let’s explore…

Stroll along Gstaad Promenade

Get your bearings and soak up the alpine atmosphere of this gorgeous village with a stroll along Gstaad Promenade.

Whether you are in the mood for a spending spree or just want to enjoy an afternoon of window shopping in Gstaad, you won’t be disappointed. There are plenty of high-end boutiques featuring prestigious brands such as Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton. 

Gstaad has a wonderful pedestrianised promenade, so take a leisurely stroll and you’ll find more designer stores including Prada and Hermes. Gstaad promenade is also home to eateries and hotels and the cobbled pedestrian-only street is very photogenic.

If you arrive in Gstaad by train, the promenade is just a few steps from the main station ( Gstaad Hauptbahnhof ).

Skiing in Gstaad

With so much snow in Gstaad you can’t not visit the slopes. The resort is best described as an outdoor utopia, the mountain air is fresh and crisp, and the skiing in Gstaad is nothing short of breath taking. 

With a mixture of blue, red, and black runs there’s something for everyone. The biggest area, Rinderberg, is served by a valley to summit gondola at Saanerslochgrat. 

Intermediate skiers will enjoy the 90 kilometres of slopes at Schönreid, but there are blue runs, too, for those who prefer a more leisurely pace. 

There are a few smaller ski areas to the south, Wasserngrat and Wispile. However, the Eggli ski area is much bigger, and can be accessed via a gondola from Gstaad. 

Alternatively, there’s Glacier 3000 (which we mention later in this article), with its near perfect snowy conditions, exhilarating descents and valley runs. 

Snow sports

If you can tear yourself away from skiing, Gstaad has a wide range of other snowy activities for you ( > click here to learn more) . Gstaad Ice Rink is adjacent to the promenade and here you can check out winter sports such as curling and ice hockey, or pull on a pair of skates and pirouette your way around the rink! 

Alternatively, climb aboard a toboggan and whizz down the powdery slopes, enjoy a spot of exhilarating dog sledding with huskies at the helm or take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride and soak up the scenery. 

If that sounds a little too chilled, how about ice-climbing, hot air ballooning, heliskiing, geocaching, or paragliding? There are a number of launch sites and you can experience the buzz of a tandem paraglide with an expert pilot. 

Go village hopping

Gstaad is the main tourist hot spot. Stylish and sprinkled with hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, the resort is a real gem. 

But, take a look at a map of Gstaad, and you will see that the district is made up of nine other chalet villages –Schönried, Saanenmöser, Zweisimmen, Lauenen, Turbach, Feutersoey, Gsteig, Abländschen and Saanen. 

The Gstaad district villages all lie between 1000 and 1400 metres above sea level, boasting scenic landscapes and an abundance of attractions.

Spa and wellness facilities

In Gstaad, things to do don’t only have to involve exerting yourself. You are on vacation so why not take some time out for yourself and head to a spa.

Gstaad has a wide range of luxurious hotels offering opportunities for relaxation and wellness. 

Gstaad Palace Hotel has a swimming pool, sauna/steam bath and gym (plus massage and treatments available, too). You have to be a guest to make the most of the leisure facilities, but if you’re not, there are options for you, too.

There are public spas such as Park Gstaad with its indoor pools, jacuzzi, and outdoor pool (open during the summer). There’s also a bar area, which comes in handy as relaxing can be thirsty work. 

Enjoy a Fondue picnic

You can’t visit Gstaad without indulging in the fondue experience. You can pack your own picnic, but why not opt for a fondue backpack instead? Simply order a backpack in advance from one of the local dairies. 

Check with the Gstaad Tourist Office for further details. 

Inside your backpack you will find all the equipment needed, such as a fondue warmer, plates, traditional fondue or truffle fondue, and crusty bread. 

There are various designated fondue destinations in Gstaad including two eight-seater fondue caquelons – one on Schlittmoos, 15 minutes from Schönried and one at Vorderi Wispile on the hiking trail.

There are also a couple of fondue huts in Schönried. 

Gstaad Cinema & Bollywood locations

If you’re a movie buff, you can catch Hollywood hits, family, or art house films in the small, but perfectly formed kino Gstaad. Expect the latest picture and sound technology along with comfy seats at the cinema.

Gstaad sports

The weather in Gstaad, Switzerland is generally cold and temperate, with plenty of snow! Luckily, the outdoor sports here aren’t reserved just for the summer months. 

You can go biking all year round. There are numerous trails, including routes suitable for beginners, and more challenging trails aimed at cross-country and mountain riders.

And there’s no need to stop pedaling for the snow – winter ‘fat bikes’ (wide tyres with low pressure) are available, too.

If you’re a fan of hiking, Gstaad has that covered, too. With over 300 kilometres of paths and trails, you can explore the moorlands, valleys, peaks, and gorges. The routes are made easily accessible to all via an efficient network of lifts, cable cars and public transport.

Don’t forget your camera – the scenery is picture perfect! 

If that sounds too energetic, you could always attend one of the many world class sporting events including tennis. Gstaad hosts a renowned clay court tournament every year, known as the Swiss Open .

Gstaad’s entry on the ATP tour, first started in 1898, and is held every July.

Gstaad also hosts another big annual event, the International Polo Tournament. Every August you can see top players compete in a tough competition. If you’re a fan of polo, Gstaad is the place to be! 

Gstaad’s natural wonders

The mountain lakes, rivers, and waterfalls of Gstaad look right at home in the spectacular landscape and a great way to visit some of Gstaad’s natural wonders is on a guided hike.

For those who wish to explore independently, the splendour and romance of Lake Lauenen (4 kilometres south of Lauenen) beckons hikers and nature lovers alike.

You can hire a boat from the Restaurant Lauenensee or just enjoy a gentle stroll on the shore. 

You can also venture to Lake Arnen, located in the Tschärzistal Valley, where there’s an abundance of peace and tranquillity. Swim in the cool waters, fish, or go for a bracing hike.

There are BBQ spots along the shore if you get hungry, and there’s a restaurant if you prefer to let someone else do the cooking for you. 

Other lakes include Lake Seeberg, Hornberg Reservoir Lake, Lake Sanetsch, and Lake Retaud. There are mountain rivers too, and one of the most striking is Chalberhönibach, situated in a beautiful valley. 

You can’t visit Gstaad without marvelling at one or two of the imposing waterfalls, such as Geltenschuss and Tungelschuss, located behind Lake Lauenen.  

More things to do in Gstaad

Iglu Dorf Gstaad (the igloo village) is situated 2,000 metres above sea level and offers striking views, mesmerising sunsets, a sauna and a whirlpool, and, most exciting of all, real igloos for you to sleep in! 

The village is open from December through to April and hosts plenty of events, including a fondue evening with a torchlight descent.  

Wispile Gstaad is a mountain of fun for families. The child-friendly area has plenty of ski-slopes and the legendary Lake Lauenen.

There’s also a particularly exhilarating hike, offering panoramic views with a twist. Hike along the broad ridge on foot, and then enjoy a stimulating toboggan ride down into Gsteig. 

Glacier 3000 offers adventure, alpine scenery, architecture and a cableway – all in all, it’s a glacier world ripe for exploration. Mario Botta designed the iconic summit station, and the view is awe-inspiring. 

Must-do activities at Glacier 3000 include the Peak Walk, a suspension bridge linking two mountain peaks, dog sledding, and the Alpine Coaster toboggan run.

More than twenty snowy mountain tops stand to attention before you, and you can pick out the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Eiger (amongst others) in the distance. 

The Glacier 3000 cable car station is located at Col du Pillon, a 20 minute drive from Gstaad.  A Postbus service also operates from Gstaad. The Line 180 bus departs every hour and takes 32 minutes to reach Col du Pillon.

When you take the cable car up to Mount Eggli, Gstaad will feel a million miles away. Here you can take in the vistas and enjoy a bite to eat. 

There’s also a four-kilometre-long toboggan ride, known as the Eggli Run, that’s suitable for all ages and abilities.

Where is Gstaad

Gstaad is situated in the Canton of Bern in south western Switzerland.  It is 87 kilometres from Bern, 152 kilometres from Geneva and 207 kilometres from Zurich.

How to get to Gstaad

Gstaad is well serviced by public transport and an excellent road network.  Journey times from major Swiss cities are as follows: 

• Bern to Gstaad – 1h:15 by car / 2h:20 by train via Spiez
• Geneva to Gstaad – 1h:50 by car / 3h by train
• Zurich to Gstaad – 2h:30 by car / 4h:05 by train

Gstaad is a stop on the GoldenPass Line , one of Switzerland’s most popular panoramic train routes.  Montreux can be reached via the GoldenPass Line in just 1h:35 and Interlaken in 2h:04.

In terms of size, Gstaad is just your average Swiss village, but its reputation as a fashionable mecca for the jet-set is global. Surrounded by some of Switzerland's finest alpine scenery, Gstaad lies in the south west of the country, about two hours' drive from Geneva or Zurich on the boundary between the Bernese Oberland and the Vaud Alpes.

Gstaad is a friendly car-free village. A rather charming, attractively located place full of restored weathered-wood chalets between four gently sloping valleys. It is pleasing with a variety of sporting activities and social events during most of the year.

Most summertime tourists visit Gstaad for the endless walking path. In winter; a magnificent ski area is served including about 60 ski lifts, which enable runs to be varied in accordance with individual tastes. In summer, Gstaad plays host to several world-class festivals and tournaments including the Menuhin Classic Music Festival, the ATP Tennis Championships and the Polo Silver Cup. Summer Sports in Gstaad

Hiking Gstaad is an excellent location for leisure and adventurous hiking. The greater region features more than 323 km (200 miles) of summer Hiking paths. Free brochures with suggestions for walks and various detailed hiking maps are available at the local tourist offices.

Hot-air Balloons Rides are available from Chateau-d'Oex (next to Gstaad) to wherever the wind takes you... The view of the Alps or the Gruyere from a balloon basket is incredible.

Biking Switzerland in general and Gstaad in specific are great places for biking and mountain biking. Getting around on two wheels is made significantly more feasible by the ease of bike access. You can rent a seven-gear country bike or a quality 21-gear mountain bike from Rent-A-Bike , located at 200 SBB-CFF-FFS train stations nationwide.

Golf The countryside and the physical well-being found in it personify luxury in Gstaad. A round of golf at the foot of the snow-capped mountains remains unforgettable. Guests are welcome on the golf course throughout the season. A handicap of 36 and club membership are necessary, however. Equipment can be rented.

Skiing/Snowboarding In Gstaad you can choose from various ski areas with more than 62 cable cars and lifts and 250 km downhill ski slopes ready for your enjoyment. Valley stations are accessible by train, bus and car.

Location and Map

Gstaad is located in South West Switzerland, 148 km (92 miles) from Geneva, the nearest airport. Travel time from Geneva is 1 3/4 hours by car and 3 hours by train. The resort is 178 km (110 miles) from Zurich and 60 km (37 miles) from Berne.

From Geneva, take the train to Montreux and change trains for Saanen/Gstaad. From Zurich, take international train connections to Spiez and change trains for Zweisimmen. In Zweisimmen change trains for Gstaad.

Gstaad is a mountain resort in the Bernese Highlands ( Berner Oberland ) in Switzerland. The village is at 1050 m altitude, with local skiing only up to 2200 m, but it's linked by ski-lift to the higher areas of Les Diablerets .

Gstaad is in the MOB (Montreux Oberland Bernois) railway line which runs from Montreux to Zweisimmen. Some of the trains are Golden Pass Panoramic or Classic trains, which cost no more but are worth getting. The Panoramic carriages have plenty of glass, which enables you to see more of the spectacular views as you climb up from Lake Geneva. You can also book and pay extra to sit in right at the front of the train - the driver's cabin is perched above your head and it feels like you are in charge. The Classic carriages are all wood-lined and have waitress service for drinks - it's like being on the Orient Express! The trip from Montreux to Gstaad cost Fr. 48 return in 2008 and is worth it just for the scenery. If you go during the Montreux Jazz festival you can catch a special jazz train, which has live music in dedicated carriages for a few francs extra.

Get around [ edit ]

In the winter there are ski buses, some of which (the grey minibuses) are free for everyone, while the fare on others in included in your lift pass.

In summer, if you're staying three days, buy the Easy Access Pass (Fr. 12 a day for adults) which gives you virtually unlimited local travel, including most of the cable cars. It also gives access to some of the fantastic outdoor swimming pools, including the enormous one at the Palace Hotel.

In the winter, ski, snowboard, sledge or hike. There are 220 km of trails served by 53 lifts. It's ideal for beginner or intermediate skiers, and what it lacks in serious black runs it more than makes up for in its off-piste and ski-touring opportunities.

In the summer, many of the lifts run. You can hire mountain scooters to career back down, or have a go on one of the summer luges. Hiking is magnificent in the summer: there are dozens if miles of marked trails. You can find a via ferrata on the Horneggli and the Videmanette, with routes ranging from the trivial to the downright frightening.

Mount Eggli

It is only natural that we start the list off with a mountain since we are talking about Switzerland. One of the most simple yet fun things to do in Gstaad is visit Mount Eggli. At an altitude of 1,557 meters above sea level, Mount Eggli is accessible by cable car, enabling you to enjoy the view of the snow-covered mountains even on the trip there. 

Once you have arrived at the top, you will find a lovely, rustic alpine chalet where you can sit in the restaurant, eat and drink, and truly appreciate the magnificent view of the Bernese, Freiburg, Pennine, and Waadtland Alps on all four sides of Mount Eggli.

Take a Vintage Train Ride Past Peaks and Lakes

The train’s cabins are decorated with refined wood panels, golden details, and lovely furniture to give you the luxurious train ride experience you deserve. On this train ride, through the big glass windows, you will be able to see the lovely town of Montreux and the beautiful Lake Geneva, the charming valley of Zweisimmen, and finally, the resort town of Gstaad.

Mirage Gstaad

Mirage Gstaad, otherwise known as The Mirror House, is a sculpture installation in Gstaad and a creation of the artist Doug Aitken. This sculpture is in the shape of a full-size house and what makes it special is the fact that it is completely covered with mirrors. 

You can get to the Mirage Gstaad by taking a train or a car until you reach the Schönried station. You will have to take a short hike from this station, but note that it is a snow-covered trail, so make sure what you wear will keep you warm and your feet dry.

Visit Glacier 3000

Last but not least, you can visit the famous suspension bridge between the two mountain peaks and appreciate the beauty of the Alps from another perspective.

Trek Out for a Snowy Hike

Ride Europe’s Highest Alpine Rollercoaster

Situated at 2,925 meters above sea level, the Alpine Rollercoaster at Glacier 3000 is the highest one in the world, making it one of the most thrilling experiences in Gstaad. It’s one kilometer long and goes up to 40 kilometers per hour—perfect for those who enjoy the occasional adrenaline rush. 

This ride can be enjoyed alone by anyone over nine years old or 140cm tall, but children as little as three years old are welcome to enjoy it as well, provided an adult accompanies them. It’s an amazing ride worth going on, especially for families with kids.

Le Petit Chalet

If you have a craving for any of those Swiss delicacies , Le Petit Chalet is the perfect place for you to try them. Fondue Caquelon Cheese Grotto

Shaped like a bunker, the Fondue Caquelon Cheese Grotto or cheese cave is another famous tourist attraction in Gstaad. This is the place where you can learn about how Swiss cheese is aged. 

The dairy farmers of the region bring their cheese to the Fondue Caquelon Cheese Grotto to age for up to three years. As soon as you walk in, the delicious smell of cheese hits you, and then you see it! Thousands of golden cheese wheels elegantly arranged on the racks. The best thing about the tour? Definitely the samples of cheese you can munch on at the end.

Drive Through the Mountains

The road to Gstaad starts out as a highway winnowing down into a one-way street through the mountains. The color of the snow changes throughout the day depending on the position of the sun, and it gets a magical hue of blue when the sun is setting. Even the ride to Gstaad is breathtaking.

Gstaad is a year-round destination. It never fully shuts down, and you can find interesting things to do anytime! July through September is perfect for summer activities like hiking and swimming. January and February are the real winter months, and the best time for skiing, sledding, and other winter activities.

The Swiss train system is quick and efficient and it’s the best way to get to Gstaad.  You can take a train either from Geneva or Zurich. I recommend purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass that will allow you to hop on any train or bus in Switzerland without getting a ticket beforehand. It also gives you up to a 50% discount on many other mountain excursions and free entrance to over 500 museums. The train ride itself is a picturesque experience, so make sure to get a nice window seat and have your camera ready.

Gstaad is known for having an abundance of luxury hotels, so if you decide to splurge on a stay in one of them, it’s important to choose the right hotel for you. I stayed at the Alpina Gstaad and it was one of the most unforgettable hotel stays of my life – can’t recommend this hotel enough!

We arrived there late at night, jet-lagged and tired, and went to bed without spending much time exploring the property or the room I was staying in. When I opened my eyes and looked out the window to see majestic, snow-capped mountains, I was utterly speechless. It felt like I’d woken up in a fairytale.

The construction of the hotel was completed in 2012, and at that time The Alpina Gstaad was the first five-star hotel to be opened in Gstaad in over a century. The hotel combines traditional Swiss architecture with contemporary design elements and amenities. It’s located high up on a hill that offers spectacular views of Saane valley and Gstaad village.

With four onsite restaurants, the hotel has everything to satisfy guests’ dining cravings. There’s the Alpina Lounge & Bar, the Michelin-starred Sommet restaurant, another Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant MEGU, and Swiss Stübli which specializes in Swiss cuisine.

The Alpina also has a Six Senses spa with treatment rooms, two pools (one indoors and another one outdoors), hot and cold plunge pools, saunas, steam rooms, and a Himalayan salt room. There is nothing more relaxing than spending a few hours at the spa after hiking and skiing in the mountains.

The room I stayed in was so spacious. It had its own fireplace, a huge king-size bed, and a private balcony with stunning views of the village. Every morning I enjoyed my coffee on the balcony. Yes, it was January and it was chilly, but that didn’t stop me!

Visit mirage project.

The Mirage Gstaad is the latest piece of work by American artist Doug Aitken. It’s a chalet where all walls both inside and outside are mirrors. It acts like a large kaleidoscope and its appearance changes all the time depending on the weather, time of day, and lighting conditions. I highly recommend visiting Mirage while it’s still there –  the hike is short and it’s so fun to photograph this installation. 

EXPLORE THE VILLAGE OF GSTAAD

Tucked in the breathtaking Swiss Alps, Gstaad is a picture-perfect village that looks like it came straight out of a fairytale with its gingerbread ski chalets decorated with luminous string lights and horse carriages riding along the charming cobblestone streets. The center of Gstaad is car-free and you can find there a variety of amazing restaurants, unique shops, hotels, and bars. We recommend taking a leisurely walk or, even better, riding a horse carriage around Gstaad to see the most.  

INDULGE IN LUXURY SHOPPING

If you are into luxury shopping, the Gstaad town center has an abundance of upscale boutique shops. There you will find brands like Cartier, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, etc. along with local businesses selling produce and souvenirs. I had never seen shops looking so cute. They all have adorable chalet-style storefronts that make for a perfect Instagram picture, and it’s definitely worth visiting them even if you don’t want to buy anything!

PARTICIPATE IN WINTER ACTIVITIES

With many miles of ski runs, slopes, and cross-country trails, Gstaad attracts a huge number of skiers and snowboarders every year. But if you’re not into that, there is such a great variety of things to do in the area.

I don’t know how to ski, and didn’t feel like taking the time to learn there, but I still had so many other winter activities to enjoy. Some of the options are sledding, hiking, snowshoeing, fat biking, and sleigh riding to name a few. At the very least, you can take a cable car to the top of a mountain, get a drink, and enjoy the magnificent views.

EAT ALL THE FOOD

Gstaad is a paradise for foodies. You can literally go there just to enjoy the amazing and diverse cuisine this destination has to offer. With 5 Michelin-star restaurants and a ton of other unique establishments, you will have one of the best gastronomic experiences of your life. Here are a few places I recommend:

Avenue Montagne – a Michelin-star restaurant located in Park Hotel that serves Mediterranean cuisine along with some traditional Swiss dishes. 

La Fromagerie – for classic Swiss dishes like fondue and raclette served in a rustic and cozy setting. A must-visit!

Megu – a Michelin-star Japanese restaurant with a gorgeous interior and amazing food.

Early Beck – a local bakery for those of you who can’t live without your daily dose of pastries.

Charly’s Gstaad – a coffee and pastry shop for your afternoon pick-me-up or a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up after a day of exploring.

HIKE AROUND LAUENEN

Wake up early, take a ride to Lauenen, and head out on a little hike to Lake Lauenen. If you get there before sunrise, you’ll be able to watch the sun peeking out from behind the mountains. It’s a sight you don’t want to miss! You might even get as lucky as we did – there was a big snowfall the night before we went, so the whole area was covered in fluffy snow.

It was a true winter wonderland – so unbelievably beautiful! And very chilly. This is why it’s a good idea to grab a cup of hot chocolate in one of the local establishments. We went to Hotel Alpenland. They have a lovely bar and terrace overlooking the mountains – a great spot for relaxing after the hike.

How to Spend an Amazing 48 Hours in Gstaad, Switzerland (On a Budget!)

In this post I’m showing you how to spend 48 hours in Gstaad, Switzerland in the Summer (well end of summer really). I visited Gstaad in September 2021, and while there was some COVID drama with Switzerland, I had the most amazing experience that I can’t wait to share with you. So without further ado, 48 hours in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Ready to spend 48 hours in Gstaad with me?

Gstaad is an upscale resort town in the Swiss Alps. That means it’s big for winter travel, skiing, and apres ski. What’s there to do in Gstaad in September then? Well, actually a lot more than I thought!

Why you should visit Gstaad in the Summer

While resort and mountain towns usually lure people in during the winter, and then they flock to the coast during the summer, Switzerland is different! Switzerland’s mountain towns lure tourists all year round thanks to their views, activities, and gorgeous weather. Trust me when I tell you that the Swiss Alps are unbeaten in Europe.

Gstaad has a lot of perks for traveling in the off-season, including being able to take advantage of great discounts. A MUST if you’re traveling on any kind of budget in Switzerland.

And since Gstaad sits in a valley in the alps, there’s plenty of amazing hiking trails and mountain biking to enjoy during the snowless seasons.

Gstaad is located at an altitude of 1050 meters (approx 3,445 feet) in the middle of the Saanenland region. While it’s on the border of the French-speaking part of the country, it’s technically German-speaking. Though what I find incredible about Switzerland is how amazing the locals are with languages. So if you speak French, German, English, or Italian you’ll get along just fine in Gstaad.

When doing some research about Gstaad, I actually learned that it’s been a popular location for royal families and billionaires alike that are looking to escape to the quaint charm and luxury of Gstaad. What I loved about it while I was there was that there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of tourists there, and the ones that were there were older couples (not really a lot of families).

I also learned that the entire region is home to something like 7,000 cows!

Where to stay in Gstaad, Switzerland

Le grand bellevue.

During my time in Gstaad, I was so lucky to be able to stay at Le Grand Bellevue (an amazing 5-star hotel within walking distance to Gstaad’s main street). Everything about Le Grand Bellevue blew me away and made me wish that all of my travels were done at 5-star hotels.

Le Grand Bellevue is set away from the main streets, making it feel quiet and secluded, while still being within walking distance of most things. And what’s not walking distance from the hotel, the staff will gladly transport you too. They helped us plan our activities for our first day in Gstaad and then drove us to the gondola and picked us back up when we finished for the day.

I’ll link my review of the hotel to the post when it’s finished, then you’ll be able to see for yourself why staying at Le Grand Bellevue is the ideal choice for your summer holiday in Gstaad.

What to do in Gstaad in the Summer

Enjoy the spa at le grand bellevue.

Make sure to dedicate at least 4-5 hours of your time at the spa at the Grand Bellevue. With 17 wellness experiences, ranging from steam rooms and saunas to unique showers and plunge pools, you’ll wish you had more time to relax. We spent part of each day at the spa and absolutely loved it. We even had the swimming pool to ourselves for an hour, being able to splash around and enjoy the peace overlooking the mountains outside.

Take a Gondola up the Mountains & Ride the Trottinet Down

Upon arriving in Gstaad we asked our hotel for some easy walks and hikes in the area. They gave us the recommendation to ride the gondola all the way up the mountain, hike halfway down and then ride a trottinet the rest of the way down. We were immediately intrigued. What’s a trottinet you ask? It’s this weird scooter that you stand on and pedal with your feet. And WOW is it fun. So we rode the gondola up the mountain and spent an hour or so hiking up to different viewpoints. Then we started down to the halfway point on the mountain. From there we picked up our trottinet’s to ride the rest of the way down. Honestly, make sure this is something that you do in Gstaad. We laughed and smiled the whole way down and when we got back to the parking lot, I just wanted to ride up and do it all over again. Riding the gondola up was really nice as well!

The hotel has a private movie theater that you can rent out for showings! Make sure to relax for a nice movie in your own private theater room. I mean, when do you have the chance to do that?! Snacks and popcorn are all included as well!

I actually learned that this is quite popular with the hotels in Gstaad, so no matter where you stay you might just have a private theatre waiting for you!

Eat all the delicious food (especially at  The Lodge )

During our entire stay in Gstaad, we had great food! But one of my favorite meals was at a popup restaurant right next to Le Grand Bellevue. The Lodge is a popup restaurant serving dishes made from local and in-season ingredients. They also had a great selection of local wine. What I really loved about this restaurant was the staff. But the food was also to die for.

Gstaad is all about what’s local, what’s in season, and what’s typically Swiss. This isn’t always easy if you’re plant-based. But I’m happy to report that places were happy to help accommodate us. Especially the Grand Bellevue. They went out of their way to create a plant-based 3-course dinner for us on our first night.

Go shopping

Finally, you’re probably going to want to do some shopping while you’re in Gstaad (though not if you’re on a budget at all!)

Chalet-style storefronts that are brimming with flowers make the Gstaad Promenade the most picturesque shopping experience. It’s a real-life postcard packed with luxury outlets in a charming fairytale setting. Though since a lot of the stores are geared towards those billionaires and royals I mentioned earlier, you might skip this one shopping experience!

My experience in Gstaad, Switzerland in the Summer

All in all, I was so pleasantly surprised by Gstaad! The only time before visiting that I’d ever heard of Gstaad was on Succession, so I had expectations that it would be overpriced and full of incredibly over-rich people. That being said, I found Gstaad to be charming and the people there to be so nice! While it’s an expensive place to visit, I didn’t find the prices to be any different than you find in Switzerland in general. And visiting during the off-season can help you find deals with hotels and resorts, making your stay even cheaper.

At the end of the day, I would recommend adding Gstaad to your bucket list! Make sure you stay at Le Grand Bellevue and please make sure that you take full advantage of their spa because it is AMAZING. You can trust me on that!

The tria is expected to last six to eight weeks, according to a media advisory .

Proceedings typically start at 9:30 a.m. local time and run through the business day. Court is on break on Wednesdays .

Trial is not televised, but you can read transcripts

New York City Criminal Court is publishing the trial transcripts and copies of evidence shown to the jury.

Transcripts of proceedings aren't always available, but officials decided to make them available because of "unparalleled public interest."

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday's transcripts are available now on the New York State Unified Court System's media website. Evidence shown to the jury, including texts, emails and photos , also are available from last week's proceedings.

Week 2 ended during third witness testimony

Jurors heard from three witnesses last week.

First, David Pecker, former head of the National Enquirer’s parent company, testified about how he used the publication to write positive stories about Trump and prevent negative stories about him from coming out during his 2016 presidential campaign.

His testimony and cross-examination spanned three days. He also said his editor-in-chief believed Stormy Daniels' story about an alleged sexual encounter in 2006, which Trump denies.

Trump's former executive assistant Rhona Graff made a brief appearance on the witness stand Friday. When court wrapped for the week, the prosecution was questioning Gary Farro, former senior managing director at First Republic Bank. Farro, who was former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's banker in 2016, could be used to bring in email evidence about the payment to Daniels. CNN reported Cohen used money from his home equity line to cover Daniels' payment, and an email from a First Republic Bank employee confirmed the transfer.

Leaving the courthouse Friday, Trump challenged President Joe Biden to a debate.

“We’ll do it at the White House,” Trump said. “That would be very comfortable, actually.”

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.
