The Charminar in Old City is a result of the Quli Qutub kings moving their capital from Golconda to Hyderabad city owing to an acute water crisis in the 16th century. The four minarets of the still functional mosque of Charminar are not just raved about for their architectural detailing but some fascinating folklore too. Open between 09:30 am and 05:30 pm, the view of the old Hyderabad city and its skyline from the minaret balconies is outstanding. Keep a couple of hours to browse this iconic structure before winding up at an Irani chai joint in the Lad Bazaar and topping it up with a spot of shopping. The jewellers, the bangle-sellers, the spice merchants are the ones to look out for here. Q. How do I reach the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad? A. About 11 kilometre from the Hyderabad city centre, the Golconda Fort is quite well-connected to the rest of the city. You can take the metro and get off at the Peddamma Temple Metro Station which is the nearest metro station to the Golconda Fort. Even the Jubilee Hills Check Post metro station is quite close to the landmark. From the metro station, you can hire an auto-rickshaw or hail a taxi to get to the fort. From the metro station it takes about 20 minutes to reach the fort entrance. You also have the option of taking a bus; either the 119, 66G or 65G from the Nampally Station and Charminar respectively. Else you can always hire a taxi and arrive straight at your destination. Q. What is there to see at the Salarjung Museum, Hyderabad? A. A museum that was originally a part of a private collection of the Salar Jung family was later opened to public after the death of Salar Jung III in 1951. With some of the most exquisite range of sculptures, pottery, rugs, woodwork, paintings, manuscripts, carvings, textiles, and metallic artifact from all over the world; from Japan, India, Persia, Europe, North America, Egypt, Nepal, China, Burma among others. It isn’t without a reason that the museum is deemed one of the largest in the world. The museum is also noted for its collection of Quran in different fonts with some written in gold and silver. Q. What are Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad known for? A. Some of Hyderabad’s coolest rooftop venues, lively lounges and ambient bars and restaurants are centered around the leafy neighbourhood of Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills. Biryaniwalla & Co, Rajdhani Thali, Gourmet Baklava, Haiku, Chef Imam’s Steakhouse, Coco’s Bar & Grill, Euphoria, Burgasm are some of the places that warrant a visit in Banjara Hills. And some of Jubilee Hills’ dining out options include The Devil’s Cut, Loft, Farzi Cafe, Fat Pigeon, Dirty Martini, China Bistro, Soda Bottle Opener Wala, AB’s to name a few. Q. How to reach Cyberabad from the Hyderabad airport? A. There are air-conditioned electric buses by the Telengana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) called Pushpak Airport Liner that are a fleet of comfortable Volvo coaches operating from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to the Hi-Tech City or Cyberabad. A taxi from the airport will take around 50 minutes to cover the 33-odd kilometre to Hi-Tech City. Within that the 12-kilometre stretch of the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway connecting the Hyderabad airport to Mehdipatnam is a breeze to drive upon and really cuts down your journey time. Q. What is Gachibowli in Hyderabad known for? A. A suburb in Hyderabad about 5 kilometre from the IT hub called Hi-Tech City or Cyberabad, Gachibowli is quite a real estate magnet. What with some of the city’s most prominent hotels situated in this neighbourhood. Many a business traveller are known to stay at a hotel here and access Hi-Tech City on a regular basis. Fisherman Wharf, Radisson, The Lemon Tree, Hyatt, Fairfield by Marriott, The Pearl Inn, Sheraton are some of the popular hotels based out of Gachibowli.
