âAuthenticâ content means the same kind of content consumed by native speakers. So Italian TV shows and movies are examples of authentic content. Itâs what they binge on and what makes them cry or laugh into their popcorn.
Itâs good to acclimate yourself to Italian’s real speed and sound. Let those quirky native (and sometimes, even non-native) speakers be your guides. That way, you’ll be ready when you get into the real world, where actual Italians do their thing.
Videos give you the whole picture to get the full meaning of the words used.
Visual cues are especially important for language learners who rely primarily on context to suss out the meaning of words, phrases or sentences theyâve never encountered before.
For example, a YouTuber sitting in one of the posh restaurants in Milan, where expensive decor, classy cutlery and elegant people populate the background, makes it pretty clear what kinds of words or phrases might be used.
All this information makes language memorable and meaningful by offering viewers that all-important context.
Language can’t be divorced from culture because culture is all about the people.
So every time you hear a native speaker talking, he or she is revealing what’s important in their culture, what’s considered rude, what’s acceptable and what the expectations are in different situations.
Whether a YouTuber is exchanging slang with his friends or is conversing politely with his grandparents, language learners are picking up bits and pieces of that big pie called culture.
And because YouTube is a visual media, if you’re quick and careful, you’ll pick up a lot from the things you see.
So there you goâ31 Italian YouTubers giving you hundreds of hours of educational entertainment!
Nobody says you should only use YouTube to learn, but making it part of your learning mix is a great idea.
Read books , watch movies , play language games, find language exchange partners and download apps . Do everything you can to get Italian sorted out.
If you're as busy as most of us, you don't always have time for lengthy language lessons. The solution? FluentU !
Learn Italian with funny commericals, documentary excerpts and web series, as you can see here:
FluentU helps you get comfortable with everyday Italian by combining all the benefits of complete immersion and native-level conversations with interactive subtitles . Tap on any word to instantly see an image, in-context definition, example sentences and other videos in which the word is used.

Once you've watched a video, you can use FluentU's quizzes to actively practice all the vocabulary in that video. Swipe left or right to see more examples of the word youâre on.
FluentU will even keep track of all the Italian words youâre learning, and give you extra practice with difficult words. Plus, it'll tell you exactly when it's time for review. Now that's a 100% personalized experience !

Complete Italy Travel Blog: To Help You Plan Your First Trip in 2024
THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED LINKS. FIND MORE INFO IN MY DISCLAIMER.
Italy is one of our favorite countries to visit. It is a must-see country and it also makes for a perfect destination for those visiting Europe for the first time.
Boasting a rich cultural heritage and picturesque landscapes, Italy is easily a favorite among solo travelers, families, and kids alike. After all, who can resist the Tuscan wine lands, the Arno River in Florence, the historic beauty of Rome, and of course, lots of pasta and wine?
Even an entire month can fall short if you plan to get lost in the beautiful streets of Italy, exploring every nook and corner. But we understand if you donât have a lot of time on hand.
Thatâs when our complete Italy travel guide will come in handy to help you decide when and where to visit so that you can quickly and easily plan your vacation to Italy.
So, without further ado, letâs get going⊠First, letâs have a chat about the best time to visit Italy. Timing can have a big impact on your enjoyment factor.
If you wish to browse our posts quickly, you can also scroll to the bottom of this guide to find heaps of helpful Italy blog posts.
What Is The Best Month To Visit Italy?
Thanks to the diverse topography, culture, and lifestyle of the people in Italy, the country makes the perfect holiday spot all year round.
However, our favorite time to visit Italy is during the off-season months of spring and fall/autumn, as the heat is bearable, and flights and accommodations are quite affordable.
If I DO HAVE to choose one single month to designate as the best month to visit Italy, then I will pick September. The crowds would have subsided by then but you would still have some beautiful weather.
But letâs break down travel in Italy according to season to help you choose the best time for your trip to Italy.
1. Summer: June to August
Summer in Italy brings a lot of tourists from all over the world, perhaps because of the party season! With soaring temperatures, the rates also grow exponentially, so if youâre on a tight budget, you might want to avoid this time of the year when traveling to Italy.
However, if you want to become one with the locals and experience the lively summer festivals, book your air tickets in advance to grab some affordable deals. Interestingly, June 2 marks Festa Della Repubblica, a national holiday in Italy, so be prepared for some fun and frolic under the sun on this day.
You could also participate in Ferragosto and catch some fireworks on August 15. But keep in mind that during this month, most locals head to the countryside and coastal areas, so you might miss the crowd.
If you donât like crowds, then we suggest you avoid traveling during these months and instead pick the shoulder season to explore Italy.
2. Fall/Autumn: September to November
Bidding farewell to the scorching summer sun, fall/autumn brings a breath of fresh air to Italy. Now is the time when the temperature feels just right. Whether you want to bask in some sun or enjoy a hearty bowl of pasta-e-Fagioli- this season is perfect for any activity.
While September may have hot, sunny afternoons, the weather begins to ease down in October. Unfortunately, the cooler weather also means that you wonât be able to experience a ferry ride as most of the services shut down during this time.
Despite the bummer, you can indulge in some Italian delicacies at wine festivals called Sagres. Here, you can find local foods, chestnuts, chocolates, and truffles. And if youâre lucky, you may witness a grape harvest, too!
3. Winter: December to February
The winter chill brings in a relaxed mood among Italians as local attractions are less crowded. This means you can roam around the streets, eat at cafes, and visit popular museums as much as youâd like. Plus, theaters and operas hold frequent events during this season, so itâs the perfect time for someone who loves a little drama!
As December starts, youâll notice Christmas markets popping up all over the country. We recommend ringing in the jolly season with a skiing session with friends and family.
Also, note that travel expenses will be at a minimum during winter. So, if youâre planning a budget trip to Italy, winter is the best time.
4. Spring: March to May
Springtime is another affordable season for travelers in Italy. However, that doesnât mean that itâs not worth traveling this time as the season paints the country with vibrant flowers and lush green trees.
Again, youâll witness tons of local markets serving seasonal delicacies during this time. You may even be able to pick some juicy grapes and wild strawberries if you visit the hilly regions in Rome.
How Many Days In Italy Is Enough?
The answer to this depends on the number of destinations you wish to visit. Hence, if it is your first time in Italy, we recommend staying for a fortnight at least.
This way, youâll get enough time to explore and enjoy the essence of each destination.
As a general rule of thumb, we typically plan for at least:
- 3 â 4 Nights in big cities
- 2 â 3 Nights in smaller towns
- Day trips to villages
For a two-week itinerary, we would probably recommend 2 bigger cities and 1 â 2 smaller towns. For example, you could do Florence, Venice, and Cinque Terre.
Where Should I Travel In Italy For The First Time?
Now, if itâs your first time in Italy you wouldnât want to spend too much time, money, and effort on commuting. So, we suggest sticking to one main region and exploring it; weâve explained the various regions of Italy below, along with the most popular cities in each.
You could also start off your research by checking out our post on the 25 most beautiful cities to visit in Italy .
Personal Recommendation: If you find the whole list overwhelming, my personal recommendation of the best places to vacation in Italy for your very first trip is Rome, Venice, and Florence with either the Cinque Terre Towns or the Amalfi Coast. I hope that helps!
Otherwise here is a list of the best Italy vacation regions to visit.
1. Northern Italy
Some of the best destinations in Italy are located right here in Northern Italy, which is why I recommend it as my first pick for first-timers.
Thereâs so much to do and see in this region that, honestly, one trip does not suffice! Whilst you can read all about the 15 best places to visit in Northern Italy here, we also wanted to list our absolute top favorites below.
Top destinations to visit in Northern Italy:
- Rome
- Venice , and
- Cinque Terre
Thankfully, Northern Italy is the most developed part of the country, so transportation will be convenient. You can easily hop on one of the high-speed trains and get from point A to B in no time at all. You can grab a 10-day Italy-by-train itinerary here if that is your preferred way to travel.
As there are airports in Rome, Milan, and Venice, we recommend making any of the three your home base. You could also easily fly into Rome, move on to Venice, and then fly out of Milan.
You could start off by exploring the perfect amalgamation of the past and the present in Rome. Think art museums, historical monuments, and nightclubs!
If possible, try getting around Milan in a metro in a single day by visiting the Castello Sforzesco, Duomo di Milano, Terrazza Aperol, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. And since Milan is known for being home to various luxury fashion brands, why not spoil yourself at Via Montenapoleone?
Northern Italy is one of my absolute favorites as it is much cleaner than Southern Italy which is a bit more ummmm ⊠rough around the edges.
Whilst Tuscany is in the North, Iâve added it by itself as the next point, because there are so many beautiful places to visit that you could easily just focus on Tuscany for your first visit to Italy.
Popular among couples (although great for families too!), Tuscany is your one-stop destination for all things love and romance! With vast wheat fields, lush meadows, and cypress-lined roads- the region looks like itâs straight out of a medieval romance movie.
There are so many beautiful places to visit in Tuscany. You can either browse our full list of the best places to visit in Tuscany here or simply add a few of the top destinations from our shorter list below.
If you choose to explore this Italian area, we suggest checking out:
- Pisa,
- Florence ,
- San Gimignano , and
You can choose a base (we based ourselves in Lucca) and then explore smaller Tuscan hamlets on day trips as well. If you are traveling with kids, you will also find our Tuscany with kids guide really helpful.
3. Southern Italy
Boasting stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, southern Italy is at its best during springtime. And if youâve got more time in hand, you could stay a little longer and check out the beaches in summer.
Southern Italy is a little more rough around the edges in comparison to Northern Italy, you will find more rubbish along the roads, the roads a little more full of potholes. But we loved this region none the less, and you can find some truly special places here.
Find our full list of the best places to visit in Southern Italy or browse through our shorter list of the top destinations below.
The most popular destinations are undoubtedly:
- Pompeii ,
- Amalfi Coast ,
- Matera , and
- Sardinia.
In Southern Italy, you will also find Naples which many consider to be the pizza capital of the world that has the best Italian pizzas .
A pro tip here would be to get your hands on fast-track entrance tickets while visiting archeological sites to skip the line.
Being the largest Mediterranean island, your time in Sicily is going to be power-packed with gorgeous scenes, unforgettable adventures, and scrumptious seafood.
In our opinion, the best mode of transportation to explore this exotic island is a car, more so because public transportation is often delayed.
Again, Sicily is huge, so one week wouldnât suffice. However, if you plan ahead, you could make the most of a short trip by renting a car for more flexibility in your itinerary.
You can find our full list of 11 places to visit in Sicily here, or simply browse our list of our favorite places below.
The most popular places in the region include:
- Taormina ,
- Mount Etna,
- Cefalu ,
- Aeolian Islands , and
You can find our Sicily road trip here â a great way to skip out on all the research we had to do in order to put our plan together. Or you might prefer to grab our 10 days in Sicily itinerary here.
Known as the heel of Italy, this southeast region is not as popular among tourists, but weâd like to change that mindset! In fact, it would make a great first-time visit to Italy if you want to experience the best of the country with half the crowd.
With cities like Alberobello, Ostuni, Polignano a Mare, and Lecce, Italyâs best-kept secret deserves to be noticed by travelers worldwide.
We especially recommend staying in trulli in Alberobello for a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Not sure which places to include for your trip to Puglia? Here is our list of where to go in Puglia for a trip of a lifetime!
Now that you have managed to narrow down where to travel in Italy, it is time to start planning the trip.
How to Plan a Vacation to Italy
Okay, this is the moment! It is time to start putting together your plan
1. Decide where to go and how long to go for
Most of the time, we all have to start off with the time we have available for this trip. How long can you go away for? Once we know this, we can figure out how many destinations we can manage to visit on the trip.
As a broad guideline, we recommend 3-4 nights for bigger cities and 2-3 nights for smaller towns.
Now it is time to figure out where you want to go. Use our resource section above on where to travel to Italy for the first time. What would you love to see? Which destinations are on your bucket list?
Make a list of them all, and organize them into regions so you know which destinations are easy to visit together in one trip. Then make your decision on where you will be able to go for this trip.
If you plan on traveling long-term to different countries in Europe be sure to check out this post on the 10 best countries in Europe for long-term travel !
2. Decide where you will fly in and out of
Now that you know where you will be going, figure out where you will be flying in and out. You could choose to fly in and out of one destination such as Rome or Milan, or fly into one destination and out of another, for example, you might like to fly into Rome, then travel to Venice, and fly out of Milan.
And then it is time to secure those flight tickets. Here is a list of some of the coolest travel accessories to help you survive your long-haul flight!
- Flights to Italy: We personally book our flights on Cheapo Air, we find that they are often the cheapest (even in comparison to Skyscanner). Click to check on prices for your flights .
Check out our post on the best flights to Italy to make sure you choose the best airline when booking flights.
3. Book your travel insurance
We never travel without travel insurance with Safety Wing. We have claimed on our travel insurance more than once, claims that would have cost us A LOT out of our own pockets. Donât skimp out on insurance!!
- Travel Insurance: Safety Wing offers incredible plans and is one of the few insurance companies that allow you to grab insurance when you are already traveling! Click to check on their plans and prices .
4. Book your accommodation
Now that you know which date you will be landing in Italy, you can start booking your accommodation for the trip.
- Accommodation in Italy: We always start our accommodation research with Booking.com. We find that Booking.com offers a fabulous range of accommodation, from luxurious resorts to home rentals (and we often find the prices for these rentals are cheaper when compared to sites like Airbnb). Click here to start your research for accommodation .
5. How will you get around?
Lastly, think about how to want to get from point A to point B. You might prefer to simply hop on a high-speed train (if that option is available for your destinations). Or you might prefer to travel more lightly, stopping along the way at cute towns with a car rental.
- Car Rental in Italy: The best car rental company in Europe is Auto Europe. Auto Europe is a car rental booking service that quickly compares car rental prices across all the major brands like Hertz, Avis, and Europcar. Click to see prices for car rentals .
- Train Tickets: We love to purchase our train tickets through Omio. Click here to purchase your train tickets .
6. Plan your itinerary
Next, it is time to start planning what you will be doing in each destination. You can easily do that by searching through our list of blog posts below. This is the fun part that I love most.
And lastly, familiarize yourself with the basics that you should know before traveling to Italy. You will find a list of all the basics below.
Italy Travel Basics: What You Need to Know!
Letâs have a look at what you can expect when you travel to Italy.
Language : The main language spoken in Italy is Italian.
Whilst you will find English being spoken in many cities, it will be hard to find English speaking Italians in smaller towns and villages.
Currency : The currency in Italy is the Euro.
Airports : There are many international airports in Italy. The busiest of which is probably Rome, Naples, Florence, Milan and Venice.
To save time on your holiday, make sure you choose to fly in and out of the airport that is located closest to your holiday destinations.
Visa Required : Most tourists traveling to Italy will not need a visa (if your stay is 90 days or less), however, it is important to note that Italy is part of the Schengen agreements, so if you are traveling from one of 26 states that are part of the agreement, then you can use your Schengen Visa to travel to and stay in Italy for up to 90 days.
International Driverâs License Accepted? You will need to acquire an international driverâs license to drive around Italy.
It is a good idea to have both the International as well as your normal driverâs license on you at all times as we found that they often ask for the foreign license.
Is it Safe? Italy is a safe country to visit. Petty crimes such as pickÂpocketing are common at busy tourist sights and attractions.
It is also recommended to be aware of trains for petty crimes as well. It is always a good idea to have a sling backpack for travel so that you can keep your belongings close to you (extra bonus points if they have anti-theft features).
WiFi Availability : Free WiFi in Italy is readily available at cafes, restaurants, and hotels.
For those who prefer to be connected 24/7, you can easily grab a holiday SIM card before leaving the airport or train station. Here is a complete guide to buying a SIM card for Italy .
Credit Cards and ATMs : You can easily find ATMs that accept foreign bank cards. You will also find that you can use your credit card in most shops, restaurants, and tour operators.
Personally, we do always have some Euros on us though, so that we can use that to pay for smaller things such as metro tickets and toll roads with cash if needed.
Plugs: You will most likely need special plugs for Italy. The plugs in Italy are Type C, F, and L. The standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz.
We love buying plugs that are suitable for many countries, it makes it so much more versatile. Here is a universal adapter that I can highly recommend.

Top Italian Travel Vlogs
September 6, 2022 September 6, 2022
If you’re like us, you’ll have loved getting abroad again over the summer, and now the travel bug well and truly alive again! Are you already planning more holidays? If so, you’ll no doubt be looking for some inspiration, and what better way to use your time than by simultaneously working on your Italian skills? We love exploring different travel content from around the world, and there are of course some brilliant Italian travel vloggers out there. Here are 5 of our favourites!
in Viaggio col Tubo
Hosted by duo Giorgio and Martina, this slick looking YouTube channe l is home to lots of videos about different destinations around the world. They offer some good insider tips, and we particularly enjoy their Italy themed videos. This one offers an off-the-beaten-track guide to Venice and comes with handy English subtitles which makes it more accessible to Italian language students.
Marcello Ascani
Although probably more of a lifestyle vlog rather than travel, Marcello Ascani’s channel is very international in theme, and covers lots of different topics about various phenomena around the world. We particularly enjoyed this video about Northern Italy and its amazing scenes of the Dolomites. The video comes with Italian subtitles and is more suitable for higher level students or those wanting to push themselves.
Sabrina Merolla
Again a mix of travel and lifestyle, Sabrina’s videos are pretty glamorous and very much of the influencer style. The majority have a Puglia theme, but we can’t complain about that, as it’s one of Italy’s most stunning regions. This video about the town of Matino is particularly enjoyable, and also comes with English subtitles.
Enrico Usseglio Brancard
Enrico is more of a traditional travel vlogger, with a mix of nice hand-held and drone footage. His channel houses as a wide range of videos about different places, but what we love most are his Italy themed videos. We particularly enjoyed a collection of videos he has about Sicily, including this one showcasing Siracusa. It comes with English subtitles too.
Andrea Battistini
We hope these channels inspire your future adventures and help you with your Italian at the same time! Fancy consolidating your Italian language skills even more? Find out about our upcoming online and face-to-face Italian courses here .

How the best travel vloggers were chosen:
Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

Mark Weins t ops the list as the best food travel vlogger. He takes you on a culinary journey around the world.

13 Must-Know Italian YouTubers for Learning Italian
Welcome! You are now ready to learn Italian by delving into the exciting world of ITALIAN YOUTUBE! đ
Watching YouTube is without question one of the easiest ways to practice Italian listening skills and to learn new vocabulary .
There are a ton of reasons why watching YouTube (and recommending it to students if you are a teacher!) is a helpful to learn Italian:
First of all , most people already love watching YouTube ! This makes it super easy to pick up some new channel recommendations and subscribe. Then, if you are feeling motivated (or just can’t find anything else to watch!) you have the easy option of clicking on some awesome Italian content. Chances are, you will learn from and probably enjoy it much more than a typical grammar lesson!
*Remember to keep a pen and paper handy to write down useful words and phrases that you will want to use in the future!*
Second, YouTube is free!
It’s true that there are listening comprehension sites designed for students to learn Italian as a second language. However, much of it is limited unless you are willing to sign up for a subscription. Most is also grammar-focused and limited in context. Not ideal if you are looking to add some fun to your Italian learning!Â
This leads me to the third reason…
On YouTube, there are a ton of Italian vloggers that make videos designed for viewers of all different ages and interests , not one specific audience!
This makes the Italian that they are using and the subjects they are talking about in their videos relevant and interesting to YOU !
As we know, being engaged (and entertained!) makes learning more enjoyable and it makes you more likely to continue to learn Italian too! So, let’s find them some fun Italian YouTubers and get practicing those listening skills!

The vibe in the videos is relaxed, fun, and informative. I love that the videos donât always include just the main highlights of the places visited. You also get to learn about more âoff the beaten pathâ type attractions and different ways of travelling, such as camping!
As far as the language used, itâs great for learning common Italian expressions as the speech is not too fast. Plus, the videography is really well done so it makes for an enjoyable watching experience!

Lucreziaâs channel is an absolute MUST for anyone who is learning Italian! There is so much material on this channel that ranges from grammar explanations, frequent daily life vlogs, Italian traditions, to cooking, and more.

The topics chosen are interesting, relevant, and itâs great to hear an Italian perspective . He also tackles topics that could be controversial such as child immigration in the USA, the AstraZeneca vaccine, and Brexit. Super interesting stuff!
These videos are gold mines for Italian learners who are ready to pick up practical vocabulary that is slightly more advanced to use in conversations that move beyond the typical topics of hobbies, weather, and daily life.
The Italian spoken is generally quite clear and the pace not too fast so the auto-generated subtitles work quite well.
#4: iPantellas (comedy)
iPantellas are all about comedy! They do tons of funny âvsâ skits, parodies, and other situational comedy . A few examples are: North vs. South, different types of people at the dentist, different types of video lessons at school, how to find love in 2020, etc.
This channel is really popular and publishes new content quite regularly , often more than once a week.
Because it is comedy, the Italian is harder to understand than the other channels on this list but if you want a challenge and a good laugh, check it out!
#5: In viaggio col tubo (travel)
Giorgio and Martina host this travel YouTube channel where they visit tons of beautiful places and give their recommendations about what to see, things to eat, and where to stay too.
The places that they visit are usually very scenic and the videos are really well put together .
Their Italian is easy to understand and they donât speak too quickly. Because of this, the auto-generated subtitles are usually quite accurate.
#6: LearnAmo (Italian teachers)
LearnAmo is a fun, lively language channel that tackles learning Italian in a variety of different ways.
They have the traditional grammar lessons but they also make a lot of cultural videos about festivals, Italian food, superstitions, colloquial expressions, things you should NOT say in Italian, and, like you can see from the one that I linkedâŠ. coffee!!
Graziana is a fantastic host who speaks clearly and slowly so the Italian speech is easy to follow , even the more advanced topics. The interesting graphics really help too!
#7: Wildflowermood (travel / lifestyle)
On this channel, Francesca takes you through a variety of alternative travel experiences such as living out of a van, low cost travel, and more traditional travel vlogs as well!
She calls herself a digital nomad and shares her many adventures in her videos. Her Italian is usually quite easy to follow and the auto-generated subtitles are accurate.
In addition to her travels, she also talks about everyday life such as being a YouTuber, fitness, food, and maintaining minimalist lifestyle .
#8: Link4Universe (space / astronomy)
As a person who loves astronomy, this is one of my FAVOURITE channels! Adrian is a passionate, engaging and knowledgeable host who truly loves astronomy.
There are so many interesting videos that range from explaining scientific concepts related to astronomy, to updates on space missions, to information about technology in development, and so much more!
If you are a space nerd , or perhaps even have a passing interest in learning more about the world beyond Earth, you will truly love the content on Link4Universe.
For people who are just starting out in Italian, I would hold off on this channel as the language is more advanced due to the subject matter that is discussed. Still interested, I would recommend starting with the informational videos and then moving on from there. Itâs definitely worth it!
#9: The Pillow (world / interesting stories)
This fun channel is all about documenting interesting places and stories from around the world! Lots of their popular videos include asking people from other countries their opinions about Italians or aspects of Italian culture too.
There are lots of unique videos about topics. These include: the largest labyrinth in the world, a town that pays you to live there, staying at the cheapest hotel in Italy, whether strangers trust Italians, and more!
The Italian is easy to follow and the subject matter of the videos will keep you interested!
#10: Learn Italian with Italy made Easy (Italian teacher)
The last Italian language YouTube channel I chose to include is Learn Italian with Italy Made Easy !
Manu is a wonderful host and he has a wide variety of Italian lessons on his channel. He has entire lessons devoted to vocabulary for different topics that are not usually covered. These include: cars, at the gym and cosmetics, as well as grammar lessons and tons of listening practice too.
His Italian is very clear and he uses frequent subtitles to help with understanding. For many of his instructional videos, I find his Italian to be particularly slow which is really useful if you are just starting out!
#11: The Random Walker (travel)
The Random Walker is all about wandering to fun places around the world and sharing the experiences!
One thing that I really enjoy about this channel is how in-depth the guides are . Instead of being 5-10 minutes, some of his videos are 30 minutes or more ! This gives you the chance to get into the place he is visiting and also to follow a longer âstoryâ in Italian.
As you hear the same accent for longer, it is easier to pick out phrases and new vocabulary to keep for later! Always a plus!
#12: Jakidale (technology / variety)
Jakidale is a channel that has an eclectic assortment of videos. I actually wasnât sure what kind of channel to call this because he talks about so many different things !
He has videos on topics such as: things he finds interesting, improvements he makes to various objects, cool technology , a few travel vlogs, unboxing videos, and more!
His spoken Italian is quite clear and relatively slow for this type of channel. He uses some text in his videos as well and the auto-generated subtitles are quite accurate aside from the moments of quick speech.
The audience for this channel is younger than some of others that Iâve mentioned. However, there is such a great range of content that there is something for all technology-loving viewers !
#13: Massimo Polidoro (psychology / phenomena)
Massimo Polidoro calls himself âlâesploratore dellâinsolitoâ (the explorer of the unusual) and that is what this channel is all about!
He talks about all sorts of interesting mysteries, theories, and unexplained happenings and takes a scientific / rational perspective to look at them.
To give you an idea of the content, he has a few main categories that he divides his videos into:
1) Incredibile ma vero (Incredible but true), 2) Psicologia dellâinsolito (Psychology of the unusual), 3) Storia insolita (Unusual history), and 4) Il complotto quotidiano (The daily conspiracy).
Massimo is very articulate and has clear Italian so he is relatively easy to follow, especially with the auto-generated subtitles!
If you have a curious mind, you will love this channel!
_______________________
And thatâs all for my top Italian Youtubers!
There are so many other great channels that I havenât mentioned (maybe I will do a part 2!) but these will give you a solid starting point and a wide range of topics to choose from!
Is there a topic I didnât cover that you would like recommendations for?
Do you have a favourite Italian YouTuber that I havenât mentioned? Let me know! I would love to hear from you!

Best Travel Vloggers and YouTubers to Follow in 2024
As a travel vlogger myself, I may be biased but I think that travel vloggers provide a captivating insight into the world of travel and adventure. You can explore destinations from the comfort of your sofa and get endlessly inspired for your next trips.
The visual storytelling that video content allows for is perfect for travel. I think it’s an amazing way to discover new and unique perspectives on travel.
Travel videos resonate with aspiring adventurers in a way that can be difficult with written content.
Plus, itâs a great way of getting to know a creator and the face behind a travel blog . I love that travel vlogs provide a more personal approach that combines an informative experience with wonderful creativity.
To help you discover the best travel content out there, I have compiled a list of the top travel vloggers and YouTubers for the most engaging travel video content.
Iâve included sections on solo female travellers, family travel vloggers, British travel vloggers, and travel couples.
From personality-led travel vlogs to stunning cinematic masterpieces, here is my pick of the best travel vloggers and YouTubers to follow in 2024.
Author Bio: Jessie Moore
Jessie Moore is a luxury travel expert with years of experience travelling the world to find the best destinations, hotels and adventures.
Top travel vloggers
Fearless and far.
Mike Corey is the man behind adventure travel vlog, Fearless and Far . I love that he journeys to weird and wonderful destinations, which are far away from the mainstream.
It is a wonderfully creative vlog that encourages people to face their fears to travel the world.
Mike approaches travel and life as an extreme sport. The results are wild, unique, and downright crazy travel experiences. His travel vlogs are a rollercoaster of adventure and adrenaline-fuelled travel.
Drew Binsky
Drew Binsky is an American travel vlogger and Youtube documentary maker. His travel vlog has a heavy focus on discovering and celebrating the various cultures across the world.
Telling unique stories of the communities and culture behind every location, he brings his viewers daily travel videos.
In a refreshing approach to travel vlogging, Drew puts a spotlight on sociopolitical issues, including human rights, gay and transgender acceptance, and challenging racial and religious stereotypes.
He wants to bust the myth that the world is unsafe, inspiring other people to travel and widen their perspective of the world; which I think is an admirable goal.
As if that wasnât enough, Drew often features amazing special guests on his channel too.
Nadine Sykora is a seasoned globetrotter who brings an impossibly fun and positive energy to her travel content.
I think her energy is genuinely infectious, adding an optimistic and lively dimension to travel and adventure.
Itâs this approach that elevates her storytelling, inspiring young people to travel. Her videos are helpful and informative, from packing guides to handy travel hacks.
Hey Nadine is therefore a great resource for aspiring young adventurers.
Sam Kolder is a Canadian adventurer and creator of exceptional travel videos. As a seriously talented travel filmmaker, Kolderâs videos are nothing short of cinematic masterpieces.
Kold is a channel for high quality travel content, as well as some educational videos for aspiring filmmakers.
In his travel videos, youâll discover engaging storytelling and the best transitions youâve ever seen. Kolder is also known for his incredible drone shots and a habit for backflipping off tall structures.
Videos are few and far between but, trust me, they are always worth the wait. My favourite travel video of all time is Koldâs Hey Tim :
Lost LeBlanc
Christian LeBlanc is another Canadian adventurer. His unwavering passion for travel shines through his well executed videos on his YouTube channel, Lost LeBlanc .
He has created a dedicated community of like-minded travellers as a result. I love that LeBlanc encourages his viewers to step out of their comfort zones in the pursuit of adventure and global discovery.
He offers a lot of resources to other aspiring travel filmmakers and photographers, teaching both the creative and business side of the travel vlogging sphere.
Formerly known as Migrationology, Mark Wienâs travel vlog is one for the foodies. He believes that food is the reason you should travel and believe me when I say that his dribble-worthy videos strongly support this claim!
His content combines incredible food discoveries with highly watchable travel experiences.
Mark is based in Thailand with his wife, but he frequently travels all over the world trying amazing food from various different countries and cultures.
He is constantly on the hunt for local delicacies and mouth-watering meals.
Phil Good Travel
In the Phil Good Travel vlog , Phil Calvert travels across Europe sprinkling positivity everywhere he goes. His aim is to promote solidarity between all backgrounds, races, and upbringings.
Given that black travellers are frequently the minority in Europe, Phil has set out to create a community of black travellers in this part of the world.
I love that he brings open-mindedness and optimism to his travel videos, and his enthusiasm is truly infectious.
Sorelle Amore
Sorelle is a quirky bundle of energy with a huge and infectious smile.
Her YouTube channel offers more than just travel, whether itâs home updates or âAdvanced Selfieâ photography tips. In short, she wants to inspire confidence and creativity.
Her videos feel very authentic, with none of the superficial or forced feel that you sometimes get with other vloggers. Sorelle is constantly striving to be a better human, and tries to inspire others to do the same.
She recently moved to Iceland, so if you love Iceland content (who doesnât!) then youâll love some of her latest videos.

A travel vlogger from Tasmania, Brooke Saward aims to inspire young people to travel more, and to feel more confident travelling solo.
Brooke documents her travels on her YouTube channel in a way that feels authentic and accessible. A popular blogger, vlogger, author, and adventurer.
Eva zu Beck
Eva zu Beck is an adventure traveller and solo female explorer. On her YouTube channel Eva explores less visited destinations which are not commonly seen in mainstream travel media.
Whether itâs visiting Aleppo and Damascus in Syria, hiking the K2 base camp in Pakistan, or trekking alone through Mongolia.
Eva aims to tell the stories of those people, communities, and cultures that you donât normally see or have access to. She encourages people to push themselves out of their comfort zones.
A truly inspiring solo female traveller and one of my personal favourites.
I Am Aileen
Aileen Adalid is a travel vlogger from the Philippines. She did what many of us dream of doing: she quit her corporate job at 21 to travel the world.
Aileen shows her viewers how to travel the world as a digital nomad, inspiring her community of travel dreamers to do the same.
On her channel, I Am Aileen , youâll find beautiful travel videos which are packed full of tips and tricks. I love that she also shows you how to live a sustainable travel lifestyle.
Jennelle Eliana
Known as the woman who lives in a van with her pet snake, Jennelle Elianaâs YouTube channel exploded within a matter of weeks. Her travel vlog has a light-hearted feel with a strong focus on sustainability.
All her videos are shot and edited on her iPhone. I think hte lower production values of her videos provide a more authentic portrayal of van life.
She addresses the less glamorous sides of travel and I love that it doesnât feel as curated or manufactured.
Oneika the Traveller
A thrill-seeker and travel junkie, Oneika Raymond is dedicated to inspiring people of colour to travel the world and live outside of their comfort zone. She inspires through education and engaging storytelling.
Oneika is not just a successful travel vlogger. She is also an award-winning writer, journalist, and keynote speaker â having spoken at the Women in Travel Summit and Womenâs Travel Fest.
Pocket Wanderings
Okay this is a shameless self-promotion but it would be remiss of me not to include my own YouTube channel in this list!
I’m still relatively new to travel blogging but I’m hoping to grow my YouTube community moving forwards. On my channel you’ll find solo travel tips, luxury travel inspiration and hotel reviews.
Family travel vloggers
The bucket list family.
The Gee family started out when they sold everything and left home to travel around the world to become Family Travel Journalists.
The Bucket List Family travel vlog documents their many adventures and travels across the world.
They describe themselves as âjust your âaverageâ familyâ, playing on the fact that most people wouldnât consider their adventure-fuelled family life to be âaverageâ at all.
I’m sure that the Gee family will certainly make you question whether settling down is the best way to approach family life!
Hopscotch the Globe
Hopscotch the Globe is run by travel couple, Kristen and Siya. Until recently, they would have fallen into the travel couple section â but now they have a daughter and a dog, they are fully fledged family adventurers.
Their aim is to inspire couples and families to travel more. The couple share travel tips, destination guides, food adventures, and tiny home living on their channel.
I find their videos to be funny, entertaining, and genuinely helpful.
Wolterâs World
The Wolterâs World channel is a great destination for honest travel advice. It comprises a family of four who have lived, studied, worked, and travelled across the world.
Wolter addresses the best and the worst parts of travelling to help his viewers be better prepared.
In sharing honest perspectives, Wolter provides helpful insights into the culture and people of the places he visits.
He has a preference for showing this more realistic side of travel â rather than fancy drone shots and backflips of cliffs. There are new videos every Wednesday and Saturday.
The Makepeace family consists of Caz, Craig, Kalyra, and Savannah. They are on a mission to prove that travel does not have to stop after children.
They have travelled the world nomadically since 1997, so trust me when I say that these guys really know what theyâre talking about.
Having travelled solo, as a couple, as expats, as digital nomads, in an RV, and as a family, they bring multiple viewpoints to the travel experience.
Their videos help fellow travel lovers unplug from the chaos, travel more, and create better memories â all with kids in tow.
British travel vloggers
Fun for louis.
Louis Cole is a popular British travel vlogger, recognised by his signature dreadlocks.
Heâs also partial to a backflip in wonderful and remote locations. The Fun For Louis channel brings upbeat and charismatic video content.
Louis is a non-stop adventurer, creating daily vlogs â so there is a lot of content to get stuck into. Youâll find a whole variety of creative content and fun adventures on Louisâ travel vlog.
Itâs exciting, entertaining, and engaging.
Mr Ben Brown
A talented photographer and filmmaker, Ben Brown documents his travels to far-flung destinations. As a result of his engaging content, Ben has achieved wide acclaim for his YouTube content.
Ben is also a professional athlete, as a two-time world champion kayaker. He is energetic and optimistic, which I think shines through his travel content.
Psycho Traveller
Birmingham-born Aly is a digital nomad who has built an online community of fellow travel lovers. The âpsycho partâ of Psycho Traveller comes from the fact that Aly is a Psychology graduate.
I love that Aly provides raw, honest commentary in her content, as well as helpful tips and tricks. She aims to inspire everyone â of all ages and backgrounds â to live the life they want to live.
She is also a best-selling author and public speaker.
Couple travel vloggers
The planet d.
An endearing adventure couple, Dave and Deb live by the motto âadventure is for everyoneâ. They are a refreshing change from the âperfectâ travel couples you see plastered all over Instagram.
The aim of Planet D is to inspire everyone to seek adventure â you donât have to be young, fit and rich to travel.
Their videos provide valuable information and unique experiences for anyone looking to live a more adventure-fuelled life.
Sailing La Vagabonde
Sailing La Vagabonde is run by Australian couple Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu. It all started with a dream of circumnavigating the globe by sailboat â with no previous sailing experience!
Riley and Elayna share video content around their seafaring experiences, including useful information for those looking to start sailing.
They inspire others to live an alternative lifestyle and also hope to raise ocean awareness. Now they have a baby in tow, so there’s a new and exciting dimension to their travels!
Kara and Nate
Kara and Nate are high school sweethearts who have been travelling the world full-time for five years. They started with a goal of travelling to 100 countries â which they have since achieved and surpassed!
The travel couple embark on all kinds of adventures â from hiking Everest Base Camp to taking the Trans-Siberian Railway.
You can also find a number of resources on travel hacking, YouTube, and entrepreneurship on their blog.
The Endless Adventure
Eric and Allison embody the classic story of leaving steady jobs to pursue a life of travel as digital nomads.
Their YouTube channel, The Endless Adventure , offers a tantalising combination of travel, food, and adventure â all of the best things in life!
I think this is a great channel for travel foodies, as they share some of the most mouth-watering food from around the world.
I have no doubt that Eric and Allison will inspire you to hit the road and pursue a life of adventure.
Flying the Nest
Stephen & Jess are an Australian couple with a passion for adventure. Youâll find a range of travel content on Flying the Nest , from daily life and food discoveries to volunteering and worldly travels.
The couple share a diverse range of travel experiences, from hiking Machu Picchu to overwater bungalows in the Maldives.
Their videos offer a unique historical insight and engaging video content. Plus, they now have a new baby to join their adventures.
I couldnât possibly fit all of the amazing travel vloggers out there into this list. But these are some of my personal favourites and a great place to start if youâre feeling overwhelmed with all the travel content on YouTube.
As mentioned above, I do have my own YouTube channel ? It’s only in the early stages I’m already in the process of expanding it and any new subscribers honestly means the world.
Jessie is a luxury travel expert with years of experience travelling the world to find the best destinations, hotels and adventures.

If Looks Could Kill: How Ripley Recreated Midcentury Italian Glamour
Secrets from the set of the new series, streaming now on Netflix.
For anyone whoâs seen the Steven Zallian-directed series, thatâs not likely a surprise. After all, the entire thing is shot in black-and-white and leans into sinister beauty, from unsettling Caravaggio paintings and crumbling churches to grand train stations, rambling seaside villas, and prime palazzos. The locations and sets do more than work as a background to the story of a striver who befriends and brutally betrays an ex-pat shipping heir, they help express the things that the characters themselves canât ever quite say.â The amazing thing about the script is that a lot of the storytelling is not necessarily verbal,â Gropman explains. âIt's about what Tom's thinking and the mood and the details, which for a designer is an incredible roadmap to be able to follow.â
The series begins in a 20 th -century New York City, where Ripleyâgetting by on quick scams, living in dumpsâis tracked down by a private detective working for the Greenleaf family, whose son Dickie has run off to Italy and who, theyâre hoping, Tom can convince to come home. Dickie wasnât the only one stuck in Europe, however. âThe interior of Tomâs SRO was built on a stage in Rome,â Gropman explains. âThe series begins in New York in 1960, and thereâs so much incredible photography from that period, all of which can be transferred into what youâre putting in front of the camera. We looked at a lot of photography by Vivan Mayer, Leonard Freed, Bert Hardy, and David Seymour.â Exteriors that echo the work of those photographers were shot in Manhattan, but the interiors from Ripley âs New York City scenes were often filmed in Rome; âwe looked long and hard to find something that wasn't corrupted,â Gropman says of locating Lower East Side blocks that retained a 1960s feel, âto the point of how are we going to shoot there?â
Those werenât the only period landmarks that needed a bit of on-screen magic. As the story expands from New York City to Atrani, Rome, Naples, Venice, and beyond, travelâand the anxiety that comes with itâbecome central to Ripley , and therefore so do modes of transportation. âI'm proud of all of the train stations,â Gropman tells T& C. âWe did both the stations themselves as well as the platforms for Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale, which was a real challenge, as well as ferry stops in Palermo and Naples. I'm a strong believer, even though we're telling a fictional story, in being honest to things that are referred toâlike the train stations, the ferry stops, the banks, and the American Express office from that period in Italy. But the train stations and the ferry stops are probably the biggest dupes.â
Roma Termini is still in use today, so shooting there was impossible. Instead, the production used Esposizione Universale Romaâa site designed to host a Worldâs Fair that never occurredâand a convention center there to recreate the station. To stand in for Napoli Centrale, Gropman and his team used a hospital in Rome built for tuberculosis patients, and the exterior of Naplesâs existing station stood in for Venice. âFor all of the train platforms, which includes those three stations as well as Sanremo, we built 300 feet of platform on a train yard in Rome where they do maintenance,â Gropman explains. âWe brought in five lengths of a period train and then had alternating columns depending upon what station we were shootingâthe rest is all visual effects.â
Effects would also play a part in building the Atrani homes of Tom, Dickie, and his sometimes girlfriend, Marge Sherwood. âTom's apartment was built on stage and Marge's interior was also, Gropman says, âbut Dickie's villa was actually one that Steve had spotted in Capri. It was built in 1902, and is today broken into three different spaces, so the challenge was to put them together in a way that felt like one.â Another challenge? Decorating the places so that they told the right story about the characters who call them homeâespecially Tomâs desire to be accepte and Dickieâs money and thoughtlessness about what it does. âThe allure of Dickie to Tom is not just his great wealth, but the fact that it apparently means nothing to him,â Gropman says.

Want to work remotely in Italy? The country just launched its new digital nomad visa.
Remote workers with dreams of working from the rolling hills of Tuscany or the cliffs of Positano are now one step closer to making that reality. Italy launched a new digital nomad visa.
Two years after its announcement, the highly anticipated digital nomad visa officially became available for those eligible on April 4. Â
âItalian-style, everything happens slowly,â said Nick Metta, a lawyer for the law firm Studio Legale Metta , which has helped Americans relocate to Italy for decades. âNow there is a pipeline of people waiting just to file the application. It's been a long-awaited visa.âÂ
Most of Mettaâs clients would previously apply for a student visa, which allowed them to work part time in Italy.Â
Under the new visa, people will be able to work from Italy for one year, with the option to renew once their visa is due for expiration. Without a visa, U.S. travelers could only stay in Italy for up to 90 days without the ability to work.

The launch makes Italy the latest European country to offer a digital nomad visa , which has already been available in Greece and Hungary.Â
Hereâs everything we know about the digital nomad visa for Italy:
Destinations behind a paywall? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.
Who can apply for a digital nomad visa in Italy?
According to the official decree , the visa is meant for those who âcarry out a highly qualified work activity through the use of technological tools that allow you to work remotely.âÂ
The regulations define eligible applicants as âdigital nomads,â self-employed freelancers, âremote workers,â or those employed by a company outside of Italy and can work from anywhere, according to Studio Legale Metta.
To qualify for the visa, the applicant has to meet certain requirements:
⟠A university or college degree or an accredited professional license.
⟠Six months of work experience in the industry, or five years for applicants without a university degree.
⟠An existing employment contract.
⟠A criminal record check.
⟠Proof of an annual income of 28,000 euros (about $29,880.06).
⟠Evidence of housing in Italy.
⟠Evidence of health insurance coverage.
Applicants can also apply to have family members join them on their Italian move, but the government has to give the final approval.Â
How do I apply for the digital nomad visa in Italy?
Thankfully, Metta said the paperwork for the digital nomad visa isnât âtoo complicated.âÂ
The first stop for interested applicants will be the Italian Consulate for their area. âConsulates are basically the front of the government to receive the applications,â Metta said. Interested applicants can book an appointment with the consulate and start gathering their necessary documents. People can also apply by mailing in their application. (However, Metta did mention consulate websites are often confusing and outdated, so working with a relocation service can make things easier.)
To apply, applicants will also need a passport with an expiration date at least three months after the end of the visa period and two passport-sized photos.
Relocation services can also help people navigate the sometimes complicated process of applying for a visa, such as negotiating early termination penalties with landlords in Italy.Â
These services also help people with state and tax planning, especially if people own assets in the U.S., like a house. Once in Italy, people need to register their residency with the town hall, which will determine what sort of taxes theyâll pay. People can speak to an international tax specialist to figure out their future taxes as well.Â
How much will the visa cost?
According to Studio Legale Metta, the application fee is 116 euros (about $123.78) per person.
How long will the application process take?
Not too long, actually. Metta estimates the process could take just three weeks if applicants are âwell-organized and have all your tax documents filed.â

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!
The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, itâll be easily accessible when youâre out exploring The Red Square.
It provides a bit of relief from the cityâs high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!
Ostankino Television Tower
- Television and radio tower in Moscow
- Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
- Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!
For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!
It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Towerâs observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!
The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!
Izmaylovo District
- The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
- Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
- Most popular during the summer and on weekends
Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.
The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!
Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!
You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!
Museum of Soviet Arcade Games
- Closed on Mondays
- Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
- The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop
For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.
The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!
Whether youâre spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!
The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.
Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and donât flash your valuables!
If youâre planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.
The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.
However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

How the Italians built the Kremlin
Castelvecchio in Verona (L) and the Moscow Kremlin (R)
The main weapon of Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow was not his men or his tactics, but Italian cannons. In the historical stand-off against the Tatars, led by Ahmed, Khan of the Great Horde, at the Ugra river in 1480, Ivan’s army brought cannons made by Italian engineer Aristotle Fioravanti (c. 1415 – after 1485), massive bronze mortars that could literally tear the Tatar cavalry to shreds. Without engaging in a fully-fledged fight, Ahmed Khan’s army retreated into the steppes.
The highest salaries in Moscow
Aristotle Fioravanti by Lorenzo Lotto
Rodolfo ‘Aristotle’ Fioravanti came to Russia in 1475, when he was already about 60. He specialized in restoring and moving bell-towers and castle towers, and constructing bridges. In 1474 in Europe, Aristotle was approached by Semyon Tolbuzin, envoy of the Grand Prince of Moscow and hired for 10 Moscow roubles a month – when in Russia, for just a ruble, a serf could buy his whole family, house, and land from his landlord.
Aristotle’s salary was probably the highest one in the Moscow State. Ivan needed him to rebuild the Dormition Cathedral, the main temple of the Moscow State, which had partially collapsed during an earthquake.
After coming to Moscow in 1475, Aristotle ordered the rest of the crumbled cathedral removed, designed a new brick stove, and a new brick mixture, and founded the first Italian-style brick mill in Moscow. His techniques allowed him to complete the 35-meter high, five-domed cathedral in just 2 years (the decoration took two years more).
The Palace of Facets (L) and the Dormition Cathedral (R)
But Aristotle was not the only Italian architect in Moscow. Maybe even more important is Pietro Solari (c. 1445 – 1493?). He came to Moscow in 1490 from Milan and designed the Palace of Facets in the Moscow Kremlin, and six towers of the current Moscow Kremlin, including the clocktower – the Spasskaya tower, that became the Moscow Kremlin’s main symbol. Other Italians, most notably Antonio Gislardi and Marco Ruffo, also worked on constructing the Kremlin walls and towers. So if you noticed that the Kremlin walls remind you of the Italian architecture – it is Italian-designed indeed.
But this was not the only thing Italians did in Moscow in the 15th-16th centuries. In almost every European army of the period, Italian engineers were the best in weapon and explosive arms design, historian Mario Corti says in his book “Italian military men in Russian service.”
Big shots in Russia
The 152-mm caliber cannon "Skoropeya" ('The Evil'), made in 1590 by Andrey Chokhov. Russians learned to make cannons like this one from the Italian gunsmiths
Simultaneously with the construction of the Dormition Cathedral, inside the walls of the Moscow Kremlin, Aristotle Fioravanti organized a gun factory, producing gunpowder and moulding guns. 16 falconets – light cannons – were its first production. Easy to handle and transport, fast to reload, they were deadly in the late 15th century.
Ivan took Aristotle to the war against the Novgorod Republic. In 1479, Fioravanti personally controlled an artillery unit that bombarded the city and forced its surrender: “The guns were firing ceaselessly because Aristotle was a master of his craft,” a Russian chronicle says. Fioravanti taught Russian troops to fire cannons at certain times of the battle, trained them to organize ceaseless fire, and handle different kinds of firearms, Mario Corti says. So in the battle of Ugra, Fioravanti was also in the main force. The last time he is mentioned was 1485 – he maybe lived in Russia for just ten years but left a great heritage behind.
The Kremlin wall and towers
In 1488, apparently after Aristotle’s death, another Italian gunsmith named Paolo De Bossis created a “big cannon” (how a Russian chronicle puts it) that was called “Pavlin” (‘peacock’ in Russian, sounding just like Paolo’s name) – it was still in use by 1563, when it was mentioned during Ivan the Terrible’s siege of Polotsk! Another Italian gunsmith named Jacobo came to Moscow in 1490 and created at least 15 small cannons. We can definitely say that in the late 15th – early 16th centuries Italians dominated Russian arms production. But they stayed for a long time and even helped Ivan the Terrible defeat the Kazan Khans.
Italians vs Tatars
The "Inrog" ('Unicorn') cannon, 1577
Ivan III’s son, Grand Prince Vasily III of Moscow, also actively used the help of Italian architects and gunsmiths; during his reign, the magnificent Ascension Church in Kolomenskoye was designed and built by Pietro Annibale, who also designed the Kitay-Gorod fortress wall in Moscow, surrounding the city’s centre quarters.
Ivan the Terrible, the first Moscow tsar, used Italian war engineers in his conquest of Kazan Khanate. The Kazan Chronicle, created in 1560-1565, the only source that tells the story of Ivan’s conquest of Kazan, famously mentions the Italian engineers.
1552 was the fourth time Ivan the Terrible tried to capture Kazan. This time, he brought Italians to help blow up the city walls. The chronicle says the tsar talked to the engineers personally, telling them that the Kazan Kremlin’s walls were very strong, but the Italians said they’d bring the walls down in a matter of days with an explosion. “This will be done,” the chronicle relates Italians saying, “only this, or starving the defenders to death could help capture this city.”
The Church of Ascension in Kolomenskoe, built circa 1530 by an Italian architect Pietro Annibale
The Italians first built four siege towers that were higher than the city walls and were used by archers to attack the Kazan Kremlin garrison. Then, they made several bridges over the Kremlin moat, and finally, properly organized tunnels leading to the walls’ foundation, and put explosives inside them. At a certain moment during the siege, the walls crumbled with explosions, and Ivan’s infantry, crossing the moat by bridges, invaded the city. Ivan had tried to take Kazan for almost 5 years, since 1547, and it was finally done with the Italians’ help.
After Ivan the Terrible’s epoch, Italians stopped coming to Moscow because an economic and military crisis meant the Russian tsars could not afford to pay the engineers the salaries they demanded. However, a century later Peter the Great would again hire Italian shipbuilders and gunmakers to build the new Russia. Meanwhile, the Dormition Cathedral, the Ascension church, and, most importantly, the Moscow Kremlin are intact to this day, and in constant use. And it’s been 500 years that Russians have known how to make proper bricks.

A Road Trip Through Texasâ ‘European’ Cities
Towns are often named after their founders or notable early residents. But Texas also boasts a surprising number whose names are the same as some of the great cities in the world. As a result, you can jump in the car and, in a single day, tour some of the most famous places in the world â or at least Texasâ versions of them. So, fill up the tank and letâs tour some of the âEuropeanâ cities in Texas.
Where else to start than in the cradle of East Texas civilization? The town of Paris was founded during the Texas Republic by the merchant George W. Wright, and it was one of Wrightâs employees who came up with the idea of naming it after the French city. The town boomed thanks to the arrival of the railroad, and today, it remains a commercial hub and manufacturing center. It takes pride in its origins, boasting one of the tallest Eiffel Towers outside of the French capital â only this version is capped with a giant cowboy hat.
From Paris, head southwest through the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex until you arrive in Dublin. No one is completely certain how this small Texas town got its name. Founders could have named it after the Irish capital, or it could have been named for the shout that rang out during skirmishes with Native Americans: âDouble In!â Today, however, they commemorate the association in the name by hosting a lively and enormous St. Patrickâs Day celebration every year.
From Dublin, head deep into Hill Country to discover a London that is not beset by frequent fog and continual rain. There were big hopes when London was founded in the 1870s that the town square would be the center of a new county. Unfortunately, its aspirational name didnât result in the boom its founders wanted. The little, unincorporated town only has a population of a few hundred today.
Next, we head to a town that shares its name with the seat of the Italian Renaissance. In reality, Florence, Texas, may actually be named after Florence, Alabama, where the townâs first postmaster once lived. Unlike its Italian counterpart, Florence is not known for producing any notable artists, but it was home to a cheese factory in its heyday.
Heading south from Florence toward the Gulf Coast, you will come across another famous center of culture: Vienna. While the town was founded by Anglo-American planters in 1840, many of the German immigrants who began to move to Texas felt comfortable putting down roots in a town that bore a familiar name. Today, however, only around 40 people call it home.
About 80 miles northwest of Vienna, youâll find yourself in another great Germanic city: Berlin. It was founded in the 1850s by Germans who were beginning to arrive in Texas en masse and settling in Central Texas. The area remained primarily agricultural, and Texasâ Berlin remains a small, unincorporated, rural community.
The final leg of the journey takes us east to Moscow â but not that far east. Moscow, Texas, was founded in the Piney Woods in the 1840s. It was originally called Greenville, but in 1853 a postmaster must have decided Texas already had too many Greenvilles and demanded the town change its name. No one quite knows why they chose to borrow the new name from the Russian capital. During the 19th century, it grew into the largest town in Polk County, even boasting its own streetcar at one time. But as the lumbering industry upon which Moscow depended dwindled, so did the townâs fortunes. Today, it is a little community of around 170 people.
As you trek across the European cities in Texas, thereâs no better way to remind yourself of where you really are than with the ultimate Texas road trip playlist .
