“Over the years I’ve realized I thrive most when I’m actively working with my bandmates behind the scenes”: Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson explains why he's decided to sit out the band’s comeback tour

Delson – whose replacement in the Linkin Park live lineup has been confirmed – will focus on his contributions to the band behind the scenes

Linkin Park 2017

Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson has announced he will sit out the band’s upcoming world tour despite being named in the nu-metal icon’s return last week .

The band announced that original members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix, and Joe Hahn will be joined by Dead Sara vocalist/guitarist Emily Armstrong, and producer/drummer Colin Brittain in the new lineup.

They marked their comeback with an energetic new track, The Emptiness Machine , alongside news that the new-look band will embark on a short world tour this month. But Delson has since taken to Instagram to explain he will not feature at those shows.

“I’ve always felt deeply connected to and proud of our live performances,” he says, adding: “Over the years I’ve realized I thrive most when I’m actively working with my bandmates behind the scenes – in the studio, collaborating on our new music, and helping build our live show.”

Alex Feder has been announced as his replacement, having featured on the band’s livestream event last week.

“I am so proud of everything we continue to create together,” Delson continues. “While I will not be performing on tour in this new chapter, I am super excited to introduce Alex – my handsome deputy on the road. Alex is a world-class musician, a kind and thoughtful friend, and we are truly fortunate he’ll be contributing his unique talent to our LP universe.”

Linkin Park Unveil Emily Armstrong as New Co-Vocalist, Announce 2024 World Tour and Album

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

A new chapter in the story of Linkin Park is among us. On Thursday, the band announced plans to embark on a headlining tour beginning kicking off Sept. 11 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, marking their first run of live performances since the death of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017. Moving forward on the road without him also brings in the addition of a new co-vocalist, for which Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Joe Hahn, and Dave Farrell have selected Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara. Colin Brittain, songwriter and producer for G Flip, was also announced as the band’s new drummer.

Linkin Park also shared their first new music in seven years, “The Emptiness Machine,” which premiered alongside a livestream performance to announce their new album, From Zero , slated for release on Nov. 15.

Linkin Park first began teasing the announcement last week. On Instagram, the official band account shared a video of a countdown that starts at 100 hours and begins ticking away. They followed it up with another countdown, this one starting at zero seconds, increasing to nine, and immediately jumping back down to five before the video completely distorts. “It’s only a matter of time …” the caption read, along with a link to their website.

The site’s landing page hosted a message of its own: “Be part of something. Tune in.” The next teaser used the same statement in its caption, this time with an accompanying image that seemed to feature the logo Linkin Park began using in 2007.

Even around that time, the band was thinking about how to move forward. “[Chester] had such a specific tone and range – an incredible range. He could sing almost any style you wanted him to. That led to conversations about what to do next,” Shinoda said. “It became obvious that you can’t just hire some schmuck to get up there and sing with us, ’cause they won’t be able to hit half the stuff.”

Linkin Park announce new album and tour dates, with two new band members

Announced live in Los Angles via their massive livestream, Linkin Park’s new line-up – including co-vocalist Emily Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain – have unveiled new single The Emptiness Machine, from soon-to-be-released album From Zero.

Linkin Park announce new album and tour dates, with two new band members

Well… that was absolutely worth the wait! After their internet-breaking double countdown , Linkin Park are properly back with some colossal news (and a livestream going on in Los Angeles right now ).

After much speculation, the beloved nu-metallers have unveiled a brand-new line-up – comprised of original members Mike Shinoda , Brad Delson, Dave Phoenix Farrell and Joe Hahn, plus new co-vocalist Emily Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain – to kick off their next chapter following the devastating death of Chester Bennington in 2017 (according to Billboard , longtime drummer Rob Bourdon “isn’t returning for this new era”).

“The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created,” enthuses Mike. “We feel really empowered with this new line-up and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”

Speaking of that new music, Linkin Park have literally just performed mega new single The Emptiness Machine (where you can already hear Emily’s vocal talents) live in LA, and they’ve also revealed that the song is taken from their soon-to-be-released eighth album From Zero , due out on November 15 via Warner.

“Before Linkin Park, our first band name was Xero,” explains Mike. “This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking. Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future – embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life. It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what Linkin Park has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.”

Oh yeah, and on top of that, Linkin Park are going on a world tour this month – plus a date in Bogota in November!

Tomorrow, Friday September 6th, the band joins long-time friend and Apple Music host Zane Lowe for an in-depth candid conversation about the incredible legacy of Linkin Park, the 7-year long journey to new music and their excitement for the future. Fans can tune in at 6AM PT to watch the full interview HERE .

Without expectations, Shinoda , Delson , Farrell , and Hahn quietly began meeting up again in recent years. Rather than “trying to restart the band,” their instinct was to simply spend more time together, and reconnect with the creativity and camaraderie that has been at the core of their friendship since college. During this time, they invited various friends and cohorts to join them in the studio; among the guests, they found a special kinship with Armstong and Brittain. A natural chemistry drew these musicians back into its gravitational pull as they logged more and more hours in the studio. It was the sound of lifelong musicians rediscovering the uncontainable energy of a new beginning once again. Over this season, FROM ZERO was born.

About the new era, Shinoda stated, “Before LINKIN PARK , our first band name was Xero . This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking. Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future—embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life. It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what LINKIN PARK has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.”

Right out of the gate, “ The Emptiness Machine ” channels the DNA of LINKIN PARK , harnessing the band’s explosive energy and retaining the hallmarks of their instantly identifiable and inimitable sound. A chameleonic and catchy anthem, Shinoda’s hypnotic melodies hand off to Armstrong’s blistering chorus, over distorted riffs and head-nodding drums.

Shinoda elaborated, “The more we worked with Emily and Colin , the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created. We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”

Ultimately, with FROM ZERO, the band is looking to harness the purest energy of their past, present, and future. The new era has officially begun.

Singer-songwriter Emily Armstrong, co-founder of alternative rock band Dead Sara, is joining the nu-metal group as a co-vocalist. Meanwhile, rock producer Colin Brittain will serve as the band's drummer.

Armstrong and Brittain were enlisted after the musicians joined Linkin Park in the studio during a series of informal sessions.

"The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company and the things we created," Shinoda said in a statement. "We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we've made together."

Bennington, who fronted Linkin Park since the band's 2000 debut album "Hybrid Theory," died by suicide at the age of 41 in July 2017. The group went on an extended hiatus following his death.

Linkin Park Is Bringing the Heat for Their Comeback Tour

Portrait of Alejandra Gularte

Babe, wake up and put on your eyeliner. Linkin Park is back! For the first time in seven years, Linkin Park has made some big announcements. Firstly, they are introducing two new members into the band: Dead Sara’s Emily Armstrong as co-vocalist and Colin Brittain as drummer (who’s worked with G Flip, Illenium, and One OK Rock as a songwriter and producer.) In a statement shared with the press, Mike Shinoda elaborated on the band’s new era, seven years after the death of their lead singer Chester Bennington, “The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created. We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.” They’ll be debuting their new sound with their upcoming album From Zero , out on November 15.

Their first single together, “The Emptiness Machine,” is streaming now.

If the news of the new Linkin Park has already calmed your little emo heart, giving you a sense of peace and tranquility, I’m so sorry to be the one to break this to you— the band is going on tour starting next week, and tickets go on sale this weekend. Has someone warned Ticketmaster yet?

Mike Shinoda says Linkin Park's return is 'not about erasing the past,' but embracing new chapter

Linkin Park.

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat at  988lifeline.org .

Seven years after the death of frontman Chester Bennington , Linkin Park is back with new music featuring a new co-lead singer, Emily Armstrong.

After the bestselling group announced on Sept. 5 that Armstrong of the band Dead Sara has joined Linkin Park to be a co-vocalist with band veteran Mike Shinoda , they kicked off their “From Zero World Tour” at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, on Sept. 11.

Linkin Park, who also announced an album in the works, performed over 25 songs from their decades-long career as a band, including their new single with Armstrong, "The Emptiness Machine."

During the show, Shinoda spoke about the band embracing a new chapter and not erasing their past and Bennington. The singer died by suicide at 41 in 2017 shortly after the group released its album “One More Light.”

During their Sept. 11 show, Shinoda asked the crowd if this was their first Linkin Park concert, as people shouted.

"That's part of why we're out here because I know that some of you didn't get a chance to (see us live)," Shinoda said. "We are thrilled to be back out here."

Adding, "It is not about erasing the past. It is about starting this new chapter into the future and coming out here for each and every one of you."

He added that they love performing for their fans, they loved writing the new record and are excited for people to listen to it.

Linkin Park's forthcoming album titled "From Zero" will be released Nov. 15. It comes on the heels of their spring release of "Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000-2023)” featuring the band's greatest hits.

Linkin Park new album, "From Zero."

Drummer Colin Brittain also joined the band, which includes original members Shinoda, Joe Hahn, Phoenix and Brad Delson. Brittain has been a songwriter and producer for G Flip , Illenium and One OK Rock.

“The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created," Shinoda said in the news release. "We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”

Armstrong made her debut onstage in a one-hour global livestream of a concert in Los Angeles on Sept. 5 featuring the new version of Linkin Park. They performed "The Emptiness Machine" as well as their hits "Somewhere I Belong," "Numb," "Faint," "Bleed It Out," "One Step Closer, "What I've Done" and "In the End."

"Ladies and gentlemen, that is Emily Armstrong, make some noise," Shinoda said to introduce Armstrong onstage after performing their new single.

“When I started to hear Emily’s voice on things, it was like the first time that my brain would accept it as a Linkin Park song,” Shinoda told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in a band interview posted Sept. 6 . “And then all of a sudden we’re here and it’s very real, and it’s really big.”

Armstrong also spoke in the interview with Lowe about stepping in for Bennington.

"Obviously on the side of like the feelings and the emotions of it, I would love to do him proud," she said.

She opened up about singing Linkin Park hits that featured Bennington.

"It's never a thought where it's like I need to make this song my own," she said. "It's like, 'How do I make this song have the same impact, as much as possible, with my voice?'"

"There was a huge leap of faith that we had to say, 'I think she's the one,'" Shinoda said in the interview.

The remaining members of the group had been meeting up in recent years "without expectations" of trying to "restart the band," but while collaborating with other artists, they "found a special kinship with Armstrong and Brittain," according to the news release.

Ahead of playing the band's hit "Crawling" at the Los Angeles concert, Shinoda referenced Bennington.

"And in the role of Chester Bennington this afternoon is each of you," he told the crowd. "Are you ready to sing with us?"

Linkin Park 'From Zero World Tour' dates

The group scheduled six upcoming shows on its "From Zero World Tour," starting on Sept. 11 at Kia Forum in Los Angeles and also hitting venues in New York City, Germany, London, South Korea and Colombia.

Linkin Park returns with a new singer, new music and a world tour

The band revealed six initial gigs, kicking off in Los Angeles next week, in their first tour since the death of lead singer Chester Bennington in 2017.

Linkin Park is making a return with new co-vocalist Emily Armstrong after several years on hiatus, announcing a world tour and an upcoming album Thursday in a live-streamed performance that amped up their long-standing fan base around the world.

The rock-rap band revealed six initial gigs, kicking off in Los Angeles next week and finishing in Bogotá, Colombia in November, in their first tour since frontman Chester Bennington’s death . The album, poetically titled “From Zero” and set for release Nov. 15, will be the group’s first record since “One More Light” in 2017.

Linkin Park debuted Armstrong — who co-founded the rock group Dead Sara — as co-vocalist during their performance Thursday, which featured new track “The Emptiness Machine” as well as old favorites such as “Numb” and “In the End.” They also brought on a new drummer, Colin Brittain, also a producer and songwriter who has worked with artists including All Time Low and A Day to Remember.

One of the most prominent rock bands of the early 21st century, Linkin Park courted a loyal online fan base in its early days and skyrocketed to mainstream success with its first album, “Hybrid Theory.” Known for its blend of rap, rock and early-aughts angst, Linkin Park won the hearts of headbanging teens — now nostalgia-seeking adults — around the world.

In an interview with Billboard, founding member and co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda said that in the years after Bennington’s death, the group would get together occasionally and play “but there wasn’t any creative momentum.”

While the band met Armstrong around 2019 and did some sessions with her over the years, they didn’t call their work together by the name Linkin Park until the songs started coming together and it became clear that calling it “anything else would be strange and misleading,” Shinoda said.

Armstrong, who is from Los Angeles, told the Salt Lake Tribune in 2012 that she knew wanted to be in a rock band since she was a kid — and subsisted for years on bean burritos from Taco Bell as she built her career.

In the Billboard interview, she described herself as an early fan of Linkin Park and said that when she joined, she wrestled with: “How do I be myself in this, but also carry on the emotion and what [Bennington] brought in this band?”

Shinoda did not frame Armstrong as a replacement for Bennington on Thursday’s live stream. “In the role of Chester Bennington this afternoon is each of you,” he said instead, addressing the crowd. “Are you ready to sing with us?”

Linkin Park Introduce New Singer Emily Armstrong As They Confirm Album And Tour Plans

Daniel Welsh

Entertainment Editor

Emily Armstrong and Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park performing on Thursday evening

Linkin Park have revealed they’ll be moving forward with a new line-up, following the death of lead singer Chester Bennington seven years ago.

On Thursday evening, original band members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Joe Hahn and Dave Farrell confirmed plans to release a new album as Linkin Park, as well as a world tour.

For their new ventures, they’ll be joined by new addition Emily Armstrong (previously best known for her work in the rock group Dead Sara), described by Billboard as “a co-vocalist” alongside Mike.

The band also have another new recruit in Colin Brittain on the drums, taking over from Rob Bourdon who the group said has “decided to step away” from Linkin Park for their new era.

“The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created,” Mike enthused.

“We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energised new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”

Colin Brittain is another new addition to Linkin Park

Later this month, Linkin Park are due to perform six arena shows in cities around the world, beginning in LA before heading to the likes of New York Hamburg and London, ahead of new album From Zero.

Mike noted: “Before Linkin Park, our first band name was Xero. This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking.

“Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future—embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life.

“It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what Linkin Park has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.”

From Zero was preceded by the release of new single The Emptiness Machine, which marks the group’s first new music since singer Chester Bennington took his own life in 2017.

Linkin Park reform with a new singer – three other bands that have successfully done the same

Linkin Park have announced that they are reforming , seven years after disbanding due to the death of lead singer Chester Bennington .

Along with the announcement of a six-date international tour and the promised release of new music, it was also revealed that Emily Armstrong, formerly of the Los Angeles group Dead Sara, would be joining founding member Mike Shinoda on co-lead singer duties.

One of the most successful bands of the streaming age, and the only band to feature in Spotify’s top ten most-streamed albums of all time, Linkin’ Park’s legion of fans are divided on Armstrong’s appointment . Many are simply happy to see them return, but others have been critical of the decision to keep using the band name in the absence of Bennington.

Linkin Park are by no means the first band to enter a second phase after the loss of their lead singer. Here are three other notable examples.

How do you replace a singer who many believe is the greatest of all time? That’s the conundrum Queen faced when they decided to continue following the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991.

The surviving band members had a taste of performing with a different frontman during the following year’s Concert for Freddie Mercury, where George Michael’s performance of Somebody to Love stealing the show. After that, they had a go at trying to do it in-house, with Brian May and Roger Taylor sharing the vocals on the 1997 single No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young) .

Then, after losing another quarter of the original lineup when bassist John Deacon called it a day, Paul Rodgers took on mic duties between 2004 and 2009.

Adam Lambert became the latest to fill Freddie Mercury’s Adidas high-tops in 2011 – a position he still holds today. Though the band has always performed as Queen + Paul Rodgers or Queen + Adam Lambert, never fully taking the plunge to officially “replace” Freddy.

2. New Order

Post-punk purveyors of gloom Joy Division may have ceased to exist following the death of frontman Ian Curtis – but it didn’t signal the end of the surviving band members’ creative output.

Black and white images of Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Peter Hook and Gillian Gilbert.

Rising phoenix-like from the ashes of their old group only a few months later as New Order, guitarist Bernard Sumner was recast as the lead singer. Gillian Gilbert turned the trio back to a quartet when she joined the ranks to play guitar and keyboards.

Gradually morphing from their post-punk roots to reinvent themselves as a dance and electronic act, with the release of Blue Monday in 1983, they made the move from indie darlings to bona fide superstars. Forty-four years on from their (re)birth and still going strong, New Order’s story is one of both survival and revival.

Brian Johnson singing.

Following the death of original singer Bon Scott in February 1980, AC/DC acted swiftly to appoint new vocalist Brian Johnson in time to begin recording new material in April that year.

With 50 million units sold and the title of biggest selling rock album of all time, the resulting album Back in Black undoubtedly marks AC/DC’s commercial high point.

Read more: AC/DC’s Back in Black at 40 – establishing rock bands as brands

The five albums released with Scott at the microphone are often more celebrated by the critics but with 11 studio albums under his belt – and the last three reaching number one in many countries around the globe with multi-platinum sales – it’s hard to see Johnson’s tenure as anything but a massive success. Though the argument about which singer is better continues to rumble on with fans.

In the case of the reformed Linkin Park, Shinoda has spoken about feeling empowered by the new lineup , seeing it as the beginning of a new chapter in the band’s history rather than “erasing its past” – an accusation some critics have levelled at him .

We’ll never know what Bennington himself would think, of course, but these words from an interview with Kerrang Radio shortly before his death might reassure Shinoda that he’s doing the right thing: “What matters is that you took the chance to do something that you felt was important to you and that’s what being an artist is all about.”

Linkin park lance sa tournée de reformation.

' src=

“It’s not about erasing the past. It’s about starting this new chapter into the future.” -Mike Shinoda @LINKINPARK • #FromZero World Tour pic.twitter.com/ouwQo53D3M — The Kia Forum (@thekiaforum) September 12, 2024

Now Fest

Bruce Springsteen Trey Anastasio

Now.

Billy Joel et Rod Stewart jouent « Stay With Me »

Billy Joel Rod Stewart
