King Charles Arrives in Germany for First State Visit as Monarch

Charles and Camilla, the queen consort, visited the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to start their three-day trip.

BERLIN — Making his first official overseas trip as Britain’s new monarch, King Charles III began a three-day state visit to Germany on Wednesday, with Camilla, the queen consort, greeting a crowd of hundreds of spectators at the landmark Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

The visit is meant to promote Britain’s ties with Germany and to celebrate the shared values between Britain and the rest of Europe, after a tumultuous few years over Brexit . This month, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited President Emmanuel Macron of France , announcing plans to deepen cooperation on topics including the development of a new generation of long-range missiles that could be used to deter aggressors like Russia.

The British ambassador to Germany, Jill Gallard, told Deutschlandfunk , a public broadcaster, that the timing of the king’s visit, which is just over a month before his coronation, was significant.

“Even though the king is above daily politics, this visit was a recommendation of the British government,” Ms. Gallard said, adding, “It’s no coincidence that this first visit is to Europe.”

Hundreds of people lined the famous Unter den Linden, a boulevard in central Berlin, to pass through metal detectors to welcome the royal couple at the Brandenburg Gate, the 18th-century monument that became a symbol of German reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Charles was the first head of state to be welcomed with full military honors at the gate since at least the founding of the German republic in 1949, according to the office of Germany’s president.

The crowd included Britons living abroad who wanted a taste of home, German fans of the royal family and others who were there to see the spectacle of the British king in their city.

Hayley Gibson, 41, a Briton who has lived in Germany for four years, said she had felt alone in her grief after Queen Elizabeth II died last year. Holding a bouquet of flowers and miniature German and British flags, Ms. Gibson said this would be her first time seeing Charles up close. “Now I get to witness this new chapter,” she said.

A German woman in the crowd, Andrea Oliver, 53, said she had been a fan of Charles ever since she watched his wedding to Princess Diana on TV as a girl. “There’s something about the atmosphere that is magical,” she said of the feeling in Berlin ahead of the royal couple’s arrival.

On arrival, Charles and Camilla received a 21-gun salute at the airport, followed by a ceremonial welcome at the Brandenburg Gate, which is close to Hotel Adlon, where the royal couple will stay.

On Wednesday night, Charles and Camilla will be the guests of honor at a state banquet, hosted by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, at Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the German president.

Charles had originally been scheduled to begin his overseas trip in France, making stops in Paris, Versailles and Bordeaux , but that leg was called off because of strikes and heated protests over Mr. Macron’s plan to raise the country’s pension age.

Buckingham Palace said the visit celebrated Britain’s relationship with both France and Germany, including their joint work on climate change and their response to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Charles and Camilla last visited Germany in 2020, during the throes of the pandemic, when he addressed the German parliament, the Bundestag, when he was still prince, and began his speech in German . On Thursday, Charles will again address the Bundestag, before meeting with refugees from Ukraine. On Friday, the royal couple will travel to Hamburg, where they will visit a monument commemorating Kindertransport, the effort from 1938 to 1940 that brought about 10,000 Jewish children to safety in Britain from Nazi Germany.

Daniel Taylor-Fowles, 27, a Briton living in Berlin, who on Wednesday was part of the crowd waiting for the couple’s arrival, said he had become a monarchist since moving abroad.

“Charles is the biggest and best diplomat that the British have,” Mr. Taylor-Fowles said. “It’s important to strengthen the friendship with the E.U. and Germany.”

PARIS (AP) — Britain’s King Charles III praised France’s “wonderful welcome” at a grand dinner held in his honor Wednesday night at the sumptuous Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles, marking his state visit meant to underline the friendship between both nations.

In a toast mostly pronounced in French, the king said that “once again, France and the French people have shown a warm welcome and profound kindness, for which we are most grateful.”

Charles and his Queen Camilla were greeted with great pomp earlier Wednesday in a ceremony at Paris’ Arc de Triomphe by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

The trip to France originally was planned for March but had to be postponed becasue of widespread demonstrations against Macron’s pension changes.

“It’s up to all of us to reinvigorate our friendship to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” Charles said in Versailles.

Macron called the visit “a sign of friendship and trust that we truly appreciate and that deeply touches us.”

Women in flowing gowns and men in tuxedos walked down a red carpet rolled out on the cobblestones of Versailles . Some of the guests paused and posed for photographers in a scene reminiscent of the Cannes Film Festival.

Camilla and Brigitte Macron appeared to have coordinated, wearing navy blue evening dresses.

Among those invited were British actor Hugh Grant, writer Ken Follett, Rolling Stones’ singer Mike Jagger, sport figures including football player Didier Drogba and the head of the Paris Olympics organization committee, Tony Estanguet, as well as many CEOs and senior politicians.

The menu included blue lobster and crab followed by Bresse poultry and a gratin of cep mushrooms prepared, respectively, by French chefs Anne-Sophie Pic and Yannick Alléno. Both have been awarded three Michelin stars. The cheese course featured France’s Comté and Britain’s Stichelton blue cheese. For dessert, world-famous pastry chef Pierre Hermé prepared his rose macaroon cookie, made of rose petal cream, raspberries and lychees.

Earlier at the Arc de Triomphe, Macron offered Charles a warm welcome, often putting his hand on his arm and his back. Both smiled as they chatted together.

National anthems were played before a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The jet fighters of the Patrouille de France and Britain’s Red Arrows, the acrobatic teams of the two air forces, flew together above the monument, leaving a trail of red, white and blue smoke in the Parisian sky.

Both the royal and the presidential couples appeared to struggle with a strong wind, which tousled Macron’s hair and forced Camilla to hold on tightly to her pink, beret-style hat.

Paris city centerwas under high security for the occasion, with thousands of police officers and surveillance drones being deployed.

Small crowds gathered behind a wide range of barriers on the Champs-Elysees to get a chance to see the royal parade.

Charles and Macron, followed by Brigitte and Camilla in another car, drove to the presidential palace under escort from the horses of the French National Guard, waving at the crowd.

Macron and Charles held a bilateral meeting at the Elysee Palace, where they were expected to discuss their joint commitment to better protect biodiversity and combat global warming.

The agenda was also due to include talks on Russia’s war in Ukraine and the migration issue as Italy’s southern island of Lampedusa was in recent days overwhelmed by people setting off from Tunisia.

Charles and Macron wrapped up their meeting with a short walk to the nearby U.K. ambassador’s residence.

As Parisians gathered along the way, some could be heard calling, “Long live the king.”

Samia Krari, a law student, said she waited for Charles because “it’s the first time he’s coming in France as the king of England so that’s something that is fabulous. We want to be there for this special occasion.”

Karim Madiou, a worker in the banking industry, noted that “we say in France that it’s the monarchy folklore … so I just want to see the big deal in real.”

While the U.K. royal family long ago ceded political power to elected leaders, members of the royal family remain Britain’s preeminent ambassadors as presidents and prime ministers jockey to bask in the glamour and pageantry that follows them wherever they go.

The visit comes amid a recent warming in the Franco-British relationship after years marked by Brexit talks and related disputes.

At a bilateral summit in March , Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak agreed to strengthen military ties and step up efforts to prevent migrants from crossing the English Channel.

“We know that the British and French relationship has been difficult at times since 2016,” Ed Owens, a historian of the British monarchy, told The Associated Press.

“This move on the part of the British state to send the king to France is about reassuring the people of France, but also the people of the U.K. that this is a relationship of significant important and that it is based on history, heritage and that there are many other things in our shared futures that connect us.”

On Thursday, Charles will address French lawmakers at the Senate.

He will later rejoin Macron in front of Notre-Dame Cathedral to see the renovation work aimed at reopening the monument by the end of next year.

Charles and Macron will also attend a reception for British and French business leaders about financing climate-related and biodiversity projects.

The king will end his trip Friday with a stop in Bordeaux, home to a large British community. He will meet emergency workers and communities affected by the 2022 wildfires in the area and visit the Forêt Experimentale, or experimental forest, a project designed to monitor the impact of climate on urban woodlands.

He will also tour a vineyard that has pioneered a sustainable approach to wine making.

Associated Press journalists Danica Kirka in London and Alexander Turnbull, Oleg Cetinic and Elaine Ganley in Paris contributed to the report.

Their Majesties are now onto the next section of their trip, and arrived in Bordeaux on Friday afternoon. Upon arrival they were met by streets of cheering fans waving both French and Union flags. As the King and Queen shook hands with fans outside the Hotel de Ville, some shouted "God save the King".

While in Bordeaux they will meet emergency workers and communities affected by the 2022 Bordeaux wildfires at the Forêt Experimentale, a site designed to monitor the responses of urban forests to global heating. They’ll end their trip with a visit to an organic vineyard that has a focus on sustainable wine making.

France was originally intended to be the first state visit of the King’s reign back in March – a sign of his desire to forge an even stronger relationship with the European neighbour. However, with just two days' notice the trip was pushed back because of nationwide protests that erupted across the country due to Macron’s proposed changes to state pensions. Instead, the Royal Couple made Germany their first state visit, touring from Berlin to Hamburg.

This tour is the King’s 35th official visit to France and the Queen’s 9th. Their last visit was back in 2019, when they attended a service in Bayeux Cathedral to mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

King Charles and Queen Camilla to Host Japan State Visit in June

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako's planned state visit to the UK in spring 2020 was postponed due to the pandemic.

"Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan have accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom in late June 2024," Buckingham Palace today, sharing that King Charles and Queen Camilla will host the visit.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022 , their first overseas trip since Naruhito's enthronement ceremony in 2019. They did not attend Charles and Camilla's coronation; instead, Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko attended on their behalf .

King Charles has a long history with the Japanese Imperial Family ; he's visited the country five times—the most recent trip occuring in October 2019, for the enthronement ceremony . This will be the third state visit he's hosted during his reign; the first, in honor of South Africa's President Ramaphosa , took place in November 2022, and the second, in honor of South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol , was in November 2023.

State visits typically include a state dinner on the first night, attended by senior members of the royal family. Per the royal family's website, the state banquet "is a very grand formal occasion held in the Buckingham Palace Ballroom. Around 150 guests are usually invited on the basis of their cultural, diplomatic or economic links to the country being hosted." (For example, South Korean girl band Blackpink attended the last state banquet. ) Typically, the royal women wear tiaras—at the last state banquet, Kate Middleton debuted the Strathmore Rose tiara and Queen Camilla wore the Burmese Ruby Tiara .

No specific date for the Japan state visit has been set yet, but we'll update this as soon as we learn more.

King Charles III to return to public duties amid ongoing cancer treatment

Roll out the royal red carpet.

King Charles III is returning to his public duties after taking a step back from treatment  for an undisclosed form of cancer .

The British monarch will visit a cancer treatment center with his wife, Queen Camilla , on Tuesday, Buckingham Palace announced in a news release. There, the couple "will meet medical specialists and patients."

"As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year," the palace said.

Charles will continue treatment for an undetermined amount of time, but according to the palace, "doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties."

Despite not having a clear timeline on when Charles can conclude treatment, the palace said his medical team is "very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive" about his recovery.

Will Charles return to a full schedule?

Charles' treatment center will "be the first in a number of external engagements" coming up, although his schedule won't immediately return to what it was before his diagnosis.

Outings "will remain subject to doctors' advice," but "it will not be a fullsummer program," the palace said.

Whether the pace of his duties increases is a decision for his medical team, and certain events will be "adapted where necessary to minimize any risks" to the king, the palace said.

Charles' first major event includes a state visit from Japan

Among one of the bigger anticipated events during Charles' recovery is a state visit from Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako in June.

The Japanese royalty will be hosted at Buckingham Palace nearly four years after their planned visit in 2020 was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Buckingham Palace announced Charles' cancer diagnosis in February

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Feb. 5 that Charles was diagnosed with "a form of cancer." Before the announcement he was hospitalized and underwent a procedure for  benign prostate enlargement in January, and the cancer was identified via diagnostic tests after a "separate issue of concern was noted."

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties," the palace said. "Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."

His daughter-in-law Princess Kate has also been diagnosed with cancer and has been taking a break from public duties.

In a  video released by Kensington Palace  last month, Kate, 42, called her diagnosis a "huge shock" for her family, adding that she and  Prince William  have done "everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family."

Kate said it has "taken time" to explain her diagnosis to her and William's children and "to reassure them that I'm going to be OK."

The palace first announced in January that Kate had been admitted to the hospital for planned abdominal surgery.

In a statement at the time, the palace said Kate's surgery was successful but that "based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

King Charles is back at work after cancer diagnosis. He looks good.

LONDON — King Charles III is back at work. It’s been three months since he told Britain he has cancer. He’s been getting treatment. He looked good.

His first outing in the public eye on Tuesday was a symbolic one, a visit to a cancer hospital in the capital, where he spoke with staff, marveled at the CT scanner and met with patients.

He took the stairs, not the elevator.

He sat with one woman, her head wrapped in a scarf, in a set of those plastic chairs they have in waiting rooms. She was attached to an IV drip. He held hands with another patient.

Charles was asked by a patient how he felt. “I’m all right, thanks. Not too bad,” the king replied, according to the royal press pool.

To another patient, Charles said, “It’s always a bit of a shock isn’t it, when they tell you.” He was talking about his own diagnosis.

Charles is the monarch, but he has entered another realm and is now a cancer patient as well. This has unnerved the nation, but the photos of him out again in public appeared welcome.

Yes, the king looked good.

Charles assumed the throne upon his mother’s death of “old age” in September 2022. She was 96. In March, the 42-year-old Catherine, Princess of Wales , wife to Prince William, heir to the throne, revealed that she, too, has been diagnosed with cancer and is receiving treatment.

The palace has not revealed what kind of cancer the king has, except to say it is not prostate cancer, nor has Buckingham Palace given information about his treatment, except to say he is still receiving it.

He and Queen Camilla arrived at University College Hospital via the Royal Bentley. Charles was dressed in a blue pinstripe suit, with a polka-dot tie and a blue pocket square.

He smiled — a lot.

British media splashed photos and video of the event because — to be honest — the big question is: How does the king look?

Charles is 75. Before his diagnosis, he was a remarkably fit man, a keen gardener who mostly avoids meat, enjoys fish and eats vegetarian one day a week. Unlike many members of his family, he never smoked.

Average life expectancy for a British male is 79 (for an American male, it’s just 73).

Charles waved to photographers outside the hospital, and then jammed his left hand into his coat pocket, a familiar pose.

He received warm applause when he arrived. Upon leaving, the couple were given bouquets.

It was announced that in addition to his other duties, Charles will now serve as patron of Cancer Research UK.

On Friday, the palace released a statement that the king’s treatment program will continue, “but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties.”

It added, “Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimize any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery.”

In 2023, the Court Circular, a kind of diary, had Charles attending 425 royal engagements, both public and private, according to a count by the Daily Telegraph. In normal times, in the course of the year, there would be one or two state dinners for a visiting head of state, plus trips abroad.

Charles liked to attend international conferences, especially those to combat climate change. There are also frequent investitures — when a royal bestows an honor on a citizen, such as a knighthood — and there are many ribbon cuttings, appearances at cultural and sports events, and visits to tend to patronages.

  • Buckingham Palace announced that Yoon Suk Yeol, president of South Korea, will travel to the U.K. for a state visit in November.
  • Yoon previously met King Charles at Buckingham Palace in September 2022 on the eve of Queen Elizabeth's funeral.
  • King Charles and Queen Camilla made an outward state visit to France last week.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have a party to plan!

Early on Tuesday, Buckingham Palace announced that the King, 74, and Queen, 76, will welcome Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea, and his wife, First Lady Kim Keon Hee, to the U.K. for a state visit this fall. The date and further details are expected to be announced in due course.

“The President of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Yoon Suk Yeol, accompanied by Mrs Kim Keon Hee, has accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom in November,” a statement said. “The King and Queen will host the State Visit at Buckingham Palace.”

King Charles and Yoon met at Buckingham Palace around this time last year. They connected at the reception for heads of state and official overseas guests held at the royal residence on the evening before Queen Elizabeth ’s state funeral. The history-making monarch died at age 96 on Sept. 8, 2022, and her funeral at Westminster Abbey and committal service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle were held on Sept. 19. Like many visiting dignitaries, Yoon signed a book of condolence at Church House in London that day.

In October 2022, King Charles sent a message of condolence to the South Korean leader following the deadly crowd surge in Itaewon, which The New York Times reported killed over 150 people.

In his former royal role as the Prince of Wales (a title now held by his eldest son and heir, Prince William ), Charles attended the State Banquet at Buckingham Palace for Roh Moo-hyun, the former president of South Korea, and his wife, Mrs. Roh Moo-hyun, during a state visit hosted by Queen Elizabeth in 2004. Charles also traveled to the Republic of Korea with Princess Diana in 1992.

State visits are an important part of the British royal family’s diplomatic duties, organized to strengthen relationships with other nations around the world.

“Foreign Monarchs, Presidents or Prime Ministers are invited to visit The King on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office,” the royal family’s website explains. “The programme for outward State Visits can vary widely, but incoming Visits usually feature a few regular events.”

According to Royal.UK, visits typically begin with a ceremonial welcome from the King and other members of the royal family at Horse Guards Parade. Guests are then invited to inspect a Guard of Honour before moving to the palace in a carriage procession with military escort before a marquee event that evening — a state banquet!

The glittering dinners are held in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace and historically seem to stipulate a white-tie dress code, where tiaras are welcome. About 150 people are invited “on the basis of their cultural, diplomatic or economic links to the country being hosted,” Royal.UK says, and the monarch makes a speech and proposes a toast to the visiting Head of State, who does the same.

From there, state visits usually last a few days. The guest of honor will meet with the Prime Minister and other government heads, possibly attending another banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation to meet more local leaders of commerce and industry.

King Charles hosted the first state visit of his royal reign in November 2022, welcoming South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to the U.K. The visit included all the traditional trappings, from a formal welcome by Kate Middleton and Prince William to a Guard of Honour inspection and sparkling state banquet at Buckingham Palace, where Princess Kate and Queen Camilla wore tiaras for the first time of the new reign.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the state visit was the first hosted by the British royal family since then-U.S. President Donald Trump visited the U.K. in 2019 . A royal source confirmed that Ramaphosa’s three-day stay was on the calendar before Queen Elizabeth died "peacefully" on Sept. 8.

News of Yoon’s upcoming state visit comes just a few days after King Charles and Queen Camilla were fêted at a state banquet during their three-day state visit to France. Last Thursday, the King and Queen were guests of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte , at the historic Palace of Versailles on the outskirts of Paris on the first night of their trip, which ran from Sept. 20 to Sept. 22. Versailles was a French Royal Palace for much of its history but is now a public museum.

Around 150 guests, including prominent figures from both Britain and France, attended the glittering occasion. In a warm and personal toast, King Charles recalled past visits to France made by his mother, Queen Elizabeth, and father, Prince Philip.

"My parents’ first official visit together was to France in 1948, shortly after their wedding," Charles said. "By all accounts, they made quite a splash, dancing till the early hours at the glamorous Chez Carrere in the Rue Pierre Charron, serenaded by Edith Piaf. I suspect it may have left an indelible impression on me, even six months before I was born. 'La Vie en Rose' is one of my favorite songs to this day!"

The brief tour, which also included stops at the Arc de Triomphe,  Rugby World Cup village, Notre Dame and an organic vineyard near Bordeaux, celebrated “Britain’s relationship with France, marking our shared histories, culture and values," King Charles' deputy private secretary Chris Fitzgerald said in a palace briefing .

The trip was originally planned for March, and postponed due to protests over changes in pensions for French workers. Fitzgerald said that the September program “remains very similar to that which was planned for March, meaning the themes of the visit are also, for the most part, unchanged."

King Charles returns to public duties with a trip to a cancer charity

LONDON — King Charles III returned to public duties on Tuesday, visiting a cancer treatment charity and beginning his carefully managed comeback after the monarch’s own cancer diagnosis sidelined him for three months.

The event marks the king’s first formal public engagement since Feb. 6, when Buckingham Palace announced that he would be taking a break from public duties to focus on his treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.

It will be the first of several public appearances Charles will make in the coming weeks as he prepares to host a state visit by the emperor and empress of Japan in June.

King Charles III is returning to public duties with a visit to a cancer treatment charity, beginning his carefully managed comeback after the monarch’s own cancer diagnosis sidelined him for three months.

It is unclear how many of the summer’s traditional royal events, including the king’s formal birthday parade and the horse racing at Royal Ascot, Charles will attend as his treatment continues. The palace said last week that doctors were “very encouraged” by the king’s progress, but his schedule would be adjusted as needed to protect his recovery.

For now, Tuesday’s appearance gives Charles another opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other health problems as he has done throughout his illness

Unlike most royals before him, Charles chose to publicly disclose details about his health when he first underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate and later when he was diagnosed with cancer. The decision raised awareness of these issues.

The National Health Service in England said the number of people seeking advice about prostate problems increased 11-fold in the weeks after Charles’ announced he was undergoing treatment.
