Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

This jack-of-all-trades tripod is possibly the most versatile we've ever seen but is it a master of none.

5 Star Rating

Digital Camera World Verdict

The 6-in-1 billing of the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro could fool you into thinking that it's all about the versatility, but it's also a very good travel tripod. Even at full height, it's impressively stable for its build, and it packs a few extra features that could come in handy whether you're shooting with a camera or a phone.

6-in-1 versatility

Packs down to less than 39cm

Impressively stable for its size

No short centre column

Some functions seem a bit pointless

Quick release plate pan control of limited use

Why you can trust Digital Camera World Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out how we test.

Benro makes two versions of the MeFoto RoadTrip Pro tripod; the first has carbon fibre legs (reviewed here), while the second has aluminum legs (and costs less at around $249.95/£180). Both varieties are available in three color variants, black, silver and blue - it's the color of the metal locks and canopy that changes.

When the five-section legs and two-section centre column are extended fully, this tripod is 152.5cm tall, which puts it in the full-height tripod category. The lowest shooting level, 39.5cm, is achieved by setting the legs to the widest of their three angles and extending the centre column up until its base clears the ground.

There are a couple of options if you want to shoot at a lower level than this. The first is to unscrew the base of the center column so it can be removed and reversed in the canopy and then shoot with the camera hanging upside-down.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

Removing the base of the centre column reveals a set of small legs that offer an alternative for low-level shooting. These can be attached directly on to the ball head to create a tabletop or mini tripod. The small legs can also be attached to the base of the centre column to create a different type of stand, but it's hard to see why you'd opt for this less stable approach when you have a tripod.

The included ball head is Arca-Swiss compatible, and its quick release plate houses a neat smartphone clamp capable of holding phones from 60mm to 90mm in width. The head has a pan lock at its base and a ball-lock higher up. In addition, the quick release plate has a panorama control.

Like the Vanguard Veo 3T 235CBP , one of the RoadTrip Pro's legs can be unscrewed and attached to the centre column to create a monopod of up to 158cm in height. A rubberized cover near the top of the leg gives extra grip and denotes which leg can be used to create the monopod.

Alternatively, the removed leg can be turned into a selfie stick, with or without the tripod head.

Build and handling

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

I'm not really a fan of the blue version of the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fibre tripod, but some may like the splash of color. However, the silver version looks very smart and the black version is the most understated.

Whichever color you opt for, the quality of the build is immediately apparent. The knurling on the leg and column locks is very smart, and while it doesn't give quite as much grip as the rubber of chunkier locks like those on the 3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0, it seems perfectly appropriate to the size and weight of this travel tripod.

Benro supplies the MeFoto RoadTrip Pro in a reasonably smart drawstring bag, and when the legs are folded up over the head, the tripod measures just 38.5cm and slips in neatly.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

When adjusting the leg angles, you'll discover that the locks aren't sprung, so you have to pull them out, adjust the angle and push the locks home again before clicking the leg into position.

You might expect to find some spiked feet inside the legs when you remove the standard rubber feet; instead, there's a 3/8-1/4-inch adapter stud for mounting the quick release plate to the removable leg to create a selfie stick, plus a mini screwdriver and a hex key for tightening the leg bolts.

Performance

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

Overall, the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro is a good performer. Even with the centre column fully extended, it's remarkably stable for its weight and build. You need to take care in windy conditions, but it's capable of supporting a full-frame camera and standard zoom lens.

If you want extra stability, Benro provides a hook that can be attached to the bottom of the center column for hanging a weight.

It takes less than a minute to invert the center column, but if I was planning to shoot at close to ground level, I'd be inclined to use the small legs on the ball head as this keeps the camera the right way up.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

Benro opted for relatively small lock knobs on the tripod head, but the rubber cover on the ball lock gives sufficient purchase to allow you to lock it tightly. The primary pan lock and quick release plate knobs have a hard slippery finish, but it didn't prove problematic.

After fiddling with the quick release plate panoramic lock for quite a while and checking the instructions, I'm still none the wiser about what it's supposed to achieve.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

There's a gimmicky element to the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod, but it's an excelled travel tripod and the built-in monopod and mini tripod are genuinely valuable additions. It's great that things like the hex key, small tripod legs and smartphone clamp are contained within or attached to the tripod because you're unlikely to forget or lose them, but it does mean that the tripod is a little heavier than it needs to be.

MeFOTO RoadTrip PRO Carbon Fibre Tripod review

Andy Westlake

Overall Rating

: 5 out of 5

Pros: + Incredibly versatile + Lightweight and packs small + Impressively stable for its size + Good maximum height

Cons: - Not ideal for ground-level shooting

Manufacturer:

Andy westlake tries out a remarkably versatile travel tripod that converts to a monopod, boom arm, table tripod, phone tripod, etc..

Tripods used to be relatively simple affairs, but there’s now a trend towards multi-functional designs capable of converting into desktop stands or monopods, as well as phone tripods . The latest MeFoto RoadTrip PRO might just be the most versatile Swiss Army knife of a support that we’ve ever seen.

In one single kit, you get a full-size tripod, a mini table-top tripod, a monopod and a boom arm. Even the camera quick release plate converts into a smartphone holder. Yet the entire kit weighs in at a travel-friendly 1.5kg, including the carry case.

  • 38.5cm packed length
  • 1.37kg weight

MeFoto RoadTRip Pro Carbon Fibre tripod

The tripod comes with a high quality but lightweight drawstring nylon carry case

MeFOTO RoadTrip PRO Carbon Fibre Tripod: Key features

  • Phone clamp:  The camera quick release plate can fold open to hold a smartphone up to 9cm wide
  • Mini stand:  A small table-top tripod is stored inside the centre column. It can be combined with the centre column, the removable leg or the head
  • Tools:  Two of the feet unscrew to reveal a screwdriver and hex-key. The third has a reversible 3/8in or 1/4in screw for connecting a camera or head
  • Carry case:  A lightweight but good quality nylon carrying case is included, with an external zipped pocket

When used as a conventional tripod, this is a carbon-fibre affair with five leg sections and a two-piece centre column, adjusted using quick and easy twist locks. The legs can be set independently to three different angles, and reverse folded around the head to give a relatively compact folded length. For low-angle work, the centre column can be reversed and the camera slung beneath the legs.

The included ball head has an Arca Swiss-compatible camera clamp, complete with a bubble level and its own panning mechanism.

The legs reverse-fold to give a compact packed unit

One of the legs can be unscrewed and combined with the centre column to form a monopod , which reaches 156cm fully extended with the head attached. This should hold your camera at eye level unless you’re over 6 feet (1.83m) tall. If you unscrew this leg’s foot, you’ll find you can attach the head to the end to make a boom arm for a microphone or light, or an extended selfie stick.

One of the legs can be combined with the centre column to make a monopod

Another area where this kit shows its versatility lies with the mini leg-set that stows inside the centre column. It can be combined with the head to form a table-top tripod, and the centre column added in between for extra height. You can even screw the removable leg on top to give a stand up to 161cm tall, which can be used to hold lightweight devices in confined spaces where the tripod wouldn’t fit.

MeFoto RoadTRip Pro Carbon Fibre tripod

You can make a table-top stand using the supplied mini legs

There’s nothing to complain about in terms of build quality , with all the controls being easy to use and the various parts screwing together nicely in their multiple configurations. The tripod is impressively stable for its size, too, and I found it was perfectly capable of holding a full-frame mirrorless kit such as Sony A7-series model with a standard zoom.

MeFoto RoadTRip Pro Carbon Fibre tripod

Benro’s cleverly designed camera plate doubles as a smartphone clamp

As you might expect, though, it’s unwise to extend the centre column’s second section when you’re shooting with a larger telephoto lens. For the record, the maximum height with only the first section extended is about 133cm. With the column fully retracted (which is always the most stable configuration) it’s just 115.5cm.

MeFoto RoadTRip Pro Carbon Fibre tripod

Two of the feet unscrew to become tools; removing the other reveals a 1/4in thread for the boom arm

I have a few gripes, but nothing too serious. The lack of a split or short centre column limits the minimum height to about 39cm, so you don’t really get the benefit of the legs’ flattest available angle. Of course, you can reverse the centre column for ground-level work, but in practice that’s always rather awkward.

There’s also a more general question about the real-world usefulness of being able to build a boom arm or stand at the expense of having a tripod for your camera. But the counter-argument is that extra versatility is never a disadvantage.

The MeFOTO RoadTrip PRO family

For those who’d like to save a little money, an aluminium version is available for $179 / £180. But it weighs an additional 270g and won’t be as good at dampening vibrations. Both versions come in three colours; along with the metallic blue of our review sample, there’s a choice of silver or all-black.

MeFOTO RoadTrip PRO Carbon Fibre Tripod: Our Verdict

Compact yet sturdy and well-made, the MeFoto Roadtrip Pro is a fine travel tripod, and quite probably the most versatile of its type you can buy, with a wide variety of uses possible.

MeFOTO Travel Tripod Comparisons & Backpacking Review

Posted on Published: May 8, 2019  - Last updated: April 18, 2020

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. I earn a small commission of product sales to keep this website going.

I was in the market for a new tripod after beating my previous tripod to death over the years. What’s the big deal about these MeFOTO travel tripods everyone is talking about?

MeFOTO is a brand I would never have considered just by name alone – pros are supposed to buy from Really Right Stuff and Induro, right?  I didn’t even want to take MeFOTO seriously because they make pink and orange tripods – pink and orange!  But they’ve been getting so much hype I had to see what they were all about.

Their tripod reviews aren’t too bad either, all in the high 4s out of 5, and “Top-Rated” by Adorama.

As far as compact travel tripods go, MeFOTO has three “series.”

Inside each of these series are other versions, a mix of aluminum, carbon fiber, and a lighter “Air” version.  I’m not going to go through the Air versions in further detail because I think they’re best as just a tabletop tripod.

Table of Contents

Standard features of all MeFOTO tripods

mefoto travel tripod

All MeFOTO tripods include a smooth ballhead with Arca-Swiss mount and bubble level.

The center column comes with a hook for hanging ballast for extra stability.

One of the features I look for most is rapid deployment and takedown, and twist-lock legs have become my favorite feature on certain tripods.  They’re just quicker to operate and more guarded against obstructions.

Every MeFOTO tripod comes with a five-year warranty and carrying case .

A variety of colors are available for your own personalizations.

MeFOTO tripod quick comparisons

Here are the quick at-a-glance differences for the different MeFOTO tripod series:

A closer look at the MeFOTO BackPacker Tripod

mefoto backpacker tripod

The BackPacker tripod is only available in aluminum and “Air” versions.

This is the minimalist tripod .  There’s one knob on the ballhead, but it will still give you full 360-degree panning and tilting up to 90 degrees.  Unlike most tripods, this one does not have any foam on the legs – so wear gloves when it’s cold because that aluminum will freeze fast.

The maximum height may be a problem for some.  Just over four feet doesn’t give you a great height for eye-level portrait shots.  But hopefully, this isn’t an issue for you if you’re only doing landscapes while backpacking.

The MeFOTO BackPacker tripod is incredibly light at 2.6 pounds including the ballhead.  A maximum load of 8.8 pounds may not seem like a lot, but this is actually more than sufficient for backpackers who carry mirrorless camera systems or micro four-thirds.  Hang your backpack from the center column for extra stability.

The BackPacker cannot be converted to a monopod, unlike the others.  It also does not have any spikes for the feet, useful in icy situations.

Check current BackPacker prices on Amazon  or B&H Photo Video .

A closer look at the MeFOTO RoadTrip Tripod

mefoto roadtrip tripod compact

The MeFOTO RoadTrip builds on the BackPacker tripod by adding a panning lock and drag control to the ballhead for extra control.

It also has spikes for the feet and a foam grip on one of the legs for carrying in cold weather.

And it converts to a monopod!

The RoadTrip’s maximum load is double that of the BackPacker, at an added tripod weight of one pound for the aluminum version.

The maximum height of the RoadTrip tripod is also just over five feet, getting closer to a good height for eye-level portrait photography.

Check current RoadTrip prices on Amazon  or B&H Photo Video .

A closer look at the MeFOTO GlobeTrotter Tripod

mefoto globetrotter tripod

The MeFOTO GlobeTrotter tripod is a great solution for the long-term traveler who needs a strong, sturdy tripod for any situation.

The maximum camera weight is 26 pounds, more than any traveler would need.  The aluminum version weighs 4.6 pounds, so 2 pounds more than the BackPacker, and the carbon fiber version weighs 3.7 pounds.

Like the RoadTrip, the GlobeTrotter includes a foam grip, spiked feet, panning & drag control, and can be converted into a monopod.

It’s just…beefier.  The maximum height is a few inches more than the RoadTrip, at 64″.

The GlobeTrotter Air is probably the only “Air” version of any of MeFOTO’s tripods that I would seriously consider.

Check current GlobeTrotter prices on  Amazon  or B&H Photo Video .

Choosing the right MeFOTO travel tripod

What’s your jam? Having a tripod you can take on lightweight travel adventures? One you’re just going to transport in your car? A multi-purpose travel tripod you can use for both?

The MeFOTO BackPacker tripod is great for minimalist backpacking trips .  But for daily use, it’s not tall enough and not sturdy enough.

The RoadTrip tripod is a good compromise between functionality and size & weight.  The spiked feet & foam handle will help in winter and the monopod conversion is a nice feature that you may actually use.

The GlobeTrotter is robust – it’s a full pound heavier than the RoadTrip but really only gives you an extra four inches of height.  It also gives you an extra nine pounds of load, but if you only shoot mirrorless the extra weight is unnecessary.

Part 1. Saint Petersburg - Moscow. Distance: 1700 km

We decided on St. Petersburg to be the starting point of our grand expedition. While the team members arrive one by one, we spend the day strolling around the magnificent metropolis of the imperial times on the Neva River. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 2003, the city is a magnificent collection of architecture masterpieces in all possible styles of 1700-1800s. Your chance to experience its sheer elegance; millions of guests fall in love with this marvel of a city every year. The participants get acquainted with each other and DTR crew. It is here the epic overland expedition across Russia starts.

In order to warm up a little and shape the team, we decided to drive north first (rather than east), and see one of the most beautiful parts of Russia, the charming Karelia. Daily runs will be moderate; we learn to drive in a convoy, understand each other's driving habits, get used to the cars and their character, and bond with each other to form a real team.

This part of the road will be the most intense in terms of the number of cities that we visit. Here, the Russians have been historically intertwined with their closest neighbours from Northern Europe. And it shows, both in the toponyms and the architecture. We will admire Veliky Novgorod, dating back to 859, one of the first Russian cities mentioned in medieval chronicles, with the age-old church domes and classic white monastery walls. We will visit the place where the Great Russian River, the Volga, starts as a modest creek, and we’ll drive past countless gorgeous lakes.

Moscow is where this segment ends. Russia’s capital is a delight, combining the hoary antiquity with the vibrance and grandeur of a modern megapolis with 12,5 mln inhabitants. Explore the medieval Kremlin and cathedrals, snap some pics for your Instagram against the background of the high-rise buildings in the business district, feel the rhythm of this magnificent city.

Day 1. St. Petersburg

The participants arrive in the ‘northern capital’ of the Russian Federation, the city of Saint Peter. Check-in to a splendid hotel in the vicinity of the Palace Square. Meet the team members and introduce yourself. Preparation and verification of vehicles.

Drive to Russia crew presents the details of the upcoming expedition. Final discussion of the route specifics.

Day 2. St.Petersburg - Sortavala. Distance: 300 km

Today we start our grandiose journey, and our first destination is Karelia. The convoy heads to Lake Ladoga, the largest in Europe! Our accommodation tonight is in the vicinity of the Ruskeala Mountain Park. We will take a guided tour along the picturesque slopes of the canyon that used to be a granite quarry.

Day 3. Sortavala - Novaya Ladoga via Mandrogi. Distance: 430 km

We will drive to the opposite (southern) shore of Ladoga Lake, and we’ll stop at the fabulous village of Upper Mandrogi on the way. The village hosts many traditional crafts and the colourful log houses are quite a view. We will spend the night in a tent camp on the shore of the Ladoga lake.

Day 4. Novaya Ladoga - Veliky Novgorod. Distance: 200 km

Our goal for today is Veliky Novgorod. One of the most ancient cities in Russia, and perfectly preserved, by the way. The main gift of the day is an incendiary folk show; enjoy the traditional Russian songs and dances along with a pleasant dinner of national cuisine.

Day 5. Veliky Novgorod - Lake Seliger. Distance: 370 km

We drive towards Lake Seliger, an enormous system of lakes linked by effluents, with lots of small islands, surrounded by pine and deciduous woods. Our cars will test the road conditions of the Valdai Upland, we will enjoy the magnificent views and also visit the source of the Volga. In several days, we will have the opportunity to admire the greatness of this tremendous 3,500 km long river - this is where it starts. In the evening, we will enjoy the fascinating sunset on the shore of the lake.

Day 6. Lake Seliger - Moscow. Distance: 390 km

Driving to Moscow. Part of the way will include a challenging dirt road, compensated by the beautiful views. We visit the Nilo-Stolobenskaya hermitage (a prominent Orthodox monastery, founded in the late 1500s) and the city of Torzhok.

In the evening, We will stay in the very center of Moscow and enjoy its eclectic architecture, wonderfully lit for the night.

Part 5. Irkutsk – Vladivostok. Distance: 3850 km

This part is probably dedicated to overcoming the huge expanses of Russia. Every day of this segment might seem a challenge, you are in for a great accomplishment. Different types and conditions of terrain, the weather may change rapidly, as well as the colours of landscapes - in short, you are now the true masters of conquering distances and surmounting obstacles.

We are approaching the Far East… the edge of the continent.

Day 26. Irkutsk – Ulan-Ude. Distance: 450 km.

Next destination is Buryatia - the land that is close to Mongolia and China, with a population quite different from what would expect in Russia.

Part of the road will be driven along Lake Baikal, and some awesome views are guaranteed. In addition, we will pass a small Baikal city, known for its famous ski resort, Mount Sobolinaya, in winter, and it delicious strawberries in summer.

We pay a visit to the Baikal Museum, where loads of information about the lake are stored.

Day 27. Ulan-Ude - Chita. Distance: 580 km

The Buryats practice Buddhism, which is rather unique for Russia. In the morning, we will go to Ivolginsky Datsan, the most renowned place of worship in these parts, and take a tour of the vicinity.y

It will take us another 9 hours to get to Chita, located deep in Siberia, surrounded by hills on the shore of a lake. It was here that the Decembrists (followed by their wives) were exiled in 1827 after the failed coup in St.Petersburg, and many places here are also associated with the legend of Genghis Khan. It is also home to Mount Pallas, which marks the watershed between the Arctic and Pacific Oceans.

Day 28. Chita - Chernyshevsk. Distance: 310 km

Today we are heading to Chernyshevsk, an ordinary Russian town with a population of only 12,000 people. This is what most cities in this area look like; small houses, questionable roads and wild surroundings… Still, they definitely have their own charm.

Day 29. Chernyshevsk - Skovorodino. Distance: 620 km

A meditative road among the picturesque hills - another long day to endure. We’ll have some decent rest in the evening.

Day 30. Skovorodino - Uglegorsk. Distance 445 km

Today, we will drive towards one of the most mysterious cities in Russia, Uglegorsk (‘city of coal’). Surprisingly, coal has never been mined here. This name was given to fool the potential enemy, covering the construction of missile silos, disguised as coal mining.

On December 30, 2015, the city was renamed Tsiolkovsky (in the name of a renowned scientist), as the new Vostochny (Eastern) spaceport was constructed nearby. The city's infrastructure is developing rapidly to become one of the most modern settlements in the Amur region, serving the needs of the spaceport personnel and their families.

Day 31. Uglegorsk – Khabarovsk. Distance: 770 km

The longest part of the road. We may call it ‘rising to the challenge’. We have to overcome about 800 km, so as we arrive to Khabarovsk, most people on the team will probably only dream about dropping in bed and sleeping it off. We are now officially in the Far East.

Day 32. Rest in Khabarovsk

We will spend the whole day walking around the city. A cruise along the Amur River is obviously a must. In general, we will enjoy the penultimate city on our long journey

Day 33. Khabarovsk –Vladivostok. Distance: 756 km

The last of the long bits we need to cover, once again driving for more than 700 km (approximately 8-10 hours). We finally reach the shore of the Pacific Ocean late in the evening. Vladivostok welcomes us with true oriental hospitality.

Day 34. Vladivostok - Russky Island - Tokorevsky lighthouse. Distance: 60 km

The complex terrain, the port, the salty sea air, all of this makes each coastal city unique and different from the rest. Vladivostok was included in the list of ten cities with the most beautiful views of the sea by the National Geographic magazine.

Vladivostok is gorgeous during the day — in sunny weather, it impresses with the bottomless blue sky and the bright sun. The bridge over the Golden Horn Bay is a definite symbol of development and progress. Vladivostok at night is fascinating, as thousands of lights are reflected in the water surface.

To mark the end of our journey, we will cross the Eastern Bosphorus strait by the marvelous bridge with a central span of 1,104 metres (3,622 feet), the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, to reach Russky Island and make sure we have reached the easternmost region in Russia that could be reached by car.

We return to the city and end our journey at the Tokarevsky Lighthouse, a landmark we chose to symbolise hope for future amazing experiences.

Days 35. Vladivostok

We are resting, sharing the emotions and wishing farewell to the members of our glorious, who depart one by one. It is also time to ship our vehicles back home*.

We wish you a safe journey home and hope to see you again on another fantastic adventure in Russia.

A grandiose journey, one of the most desirable for the most experienced road travelers! Definitely for the faint of heart – one needs to be brave and courageous to embark on such a long trip, crossing the enormous country from West to East and to conquer 12,000 km long way and 7 time zones. Should you dare to undertake this heroic deed, Russia will open her soul to you

To begin with, we will plunge into the beauty of the Karelian landscapes, enhanced a hundredfold by the white nights. We will see the two greatest capitals: St. Petersburg and Moscow. We will delve into the medieval Russia in Veliky Novgorod and Suzdal.

The thousand-year old Kazan will surprise you with a huge mosque in the heart of a seemingly Christian Russia. We will challenge the Ural Mountains, crossing into Asia. Siberia will no longer seem a mystery and a harsh land to us, some might even fall in love with it. And Lake Baikal will win our hearts forever. We will hopefully visit the brand-new Vostochny Cosmodrome (spaceport).

Our journey finishes at the lighthouse on the Pacific Ocean. Who amongst you is willing to take up this ultimate challenge?

* Shipment of vehicles after the end of the expedition. We will help you in organizing the shipment of your vehicle from Vladivostok to Europe, Moscow or St. Petersburg. Get in touch for assitastance with shipping rates and other the formalities.
