What's Included

The Colosseum is truly a site to behold. Construction began on it in 72AD and it’s the largest amphitheatre ever built, designed to house between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators who would watch brutal gladiatorial shows and animal hunts.

Rome is filled with squares, some which are large and bustling with people and others which are more sedated and offer a charming and romantic ambience. For one of the grandest visit Piazza del Popolo and for one of the most elegant and cheerful visit Piazza Navona. Whether it’s for prayer or celebration the squares are part of Roman culture and a definite sense of place can be found here.

Sit by the Trevi fountain with a deliciously cold gelato and appreciate the ornate detail of the sculpture which depicts Triton taming Oceanus’ shell-shaped chariot drawn by sea horses. At night the pool is lit with lights giving this monument a magical appearance.

There’s a flair for food in Rome and the cuisine here is so delectable that some of the national dishes here including bruschetta and spaghetti alla carbonara have become firm favourites in destinations around the rest of the world too. That doesn’t mean there aren’t new delights to try here though; crostata di ricotta is a popular Roman dessert which is a richly baked cheesecake made with ricotta and flavoured with lemons or oranges and Marsala wine.

Weather in The Mediterranean

In Rome you can marvel at priceless pieces of art at one of the many art galleries scattered around the city which display exhibitions ranging from 21st century contemporary artists to the Borghese Gallery which houses works from Raphael, Bernini, Titian and Antonello de Messina who is thought to have introduced the technique of oil painting to Venice.

Take a break from the chaos of the city in the glorious parks and gardens which are scattered throughout. The Garden of Roses is one of the city’s most romantic spaces whilst Villa D’Este has garden features so wonderfully beautiful that you could easily sit for hours amongst them.

Last but by no means least, is the chance to discover the extraordinary Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel with their minutely detailed facades and domed ceilings which seem a world away from the interior design of today.

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day... which is why you’ll need more than just a fleeting visit to explore this fantastic city. Take a look at our Smart Packages to discover some of our best cruise and stay offers in Rome.

Things to do in Rome

The Pantheon is the best preserved ancient building in Rome.…

It was originally built between 119-128 AD by Hadrian as a temple dedicated to the 12 classical deities. In 608 the Pantheon was converted to a church and even today it contains the tombs of the artist Raphael and Vittorio Emanuele II – Italy’s first king.

Work first began on the Colosseum in 72 AD and by the time it was finished it could seat 50,000 to 80,000 people.…

It’s hard to imagine that such an impressive piece of architecture was used for people to watch what was essentially mass slaughter. People would fight one another, animals would fight one another and sometimes humans would fight the animals. Over the 100 days held in inauguration for the Colosseum, more than 5,000 animals perished and by the time wild animal shows were banned in 523 AD, the elephant and tiger were almost extinct in Arabia and North Africa.

Trevi Fountain

Standing 86ft high and over 160ft wide, the Trevi Fountain is certainly an impressive sight.…

It’s the largest Baroque fountain in the city and probably one of the most famous fountains in the world. An estimated 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain every day and over the course of a year this money is collected and used to fund projects in the city such as the creation of a supermarket for Rome’s most needy.

Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums are the Christian and art museums in located in Vatican City.…

The museums contain the immensely impressive collection of art and artefacts that have been amassed by Popes over the centuries. The collections include some of the most renowned sculptures and pieces of classical Renaissance art in the world. The museums have around 70,000 items in the collection and at any one time you’ll find as many as 20,000 on display.

Restaurants in Rome

Il pagaliaccio.

Anthony Genovese is one of Rome’s most talented chefs and thanks to his experience working in the Far East and on the Amalfi Coast, he’s integrated the dishes and flavours from these destinations into the playful menu he serves at Il Pagaliaccio.

Pizzeria del Remo

This is one of Rome’s best known and most popular pizzerias. Their thin-crust Roman pizzas and fried arrancini starters will have you going back for more.

L'Arcangelo

Offering fresh and local ingredients with a cordon bleu twist, L’Arcangelo is where you’ll be able to enjoy a mid-range gourmet meal. At the end of your meal, you’ll be given homemade Vov which is a  zabaglione liqueur, along with sweet biscuits for dipping.

All’Oro

This inventive restaurant has moved locations several times; however it seems to have finally found its home in the intimate basement of a villa. The chef behind All’Oro is Riccardo di Giacinto and he is a master of culinary camouflage – one of his most famous dishes is oxtail dressed up to appear as a Ferrero Rocher chocolate. There are four different tasting menus available at All’Oro and one of them is vegan.

If money is no object and you’re looking for a truly special meal with great views, then only La Pergola will do. With 3 Michelin stars to its name, a meal at La Pergola is around £190 for a 7 course tasting menu and £230 for a 10 course tasting menu. It’s not just the food you’re paying for though as diners are rewarded with fantastic views over the city from the heights of Monte Mario.

Rome Nightlife

Open baladin.

This beer bar is simply extraordinary; there are over 40 different beers on tap and over 100 different bottled beers available. You can soak up all the alcohol with gourmet comfort food including delicious organic burgers and more unusually – liquorice flavoured chips.

Freni e Frizioni

This shabby chic bar is a popular place amongst students who gather here at around 7.30pm to take advantage of the free aperitivo buffet. During busier spells, it’s not surprising to find people spilling out into the street. Make sure to queue at the till to place your order.

Rome Tram Tracks

This is certainly an unusual way to experience Rome! When the sun starts to set you’ll board this vintage tram which is packed with wine and a live band belting out hits from The Rolling Stones and Elvis. The tram will take you around the city and you can see the sights in a new (and slightly inebriated) state.

This is one of Rome’s most chic and exclusive nightclubs and you’ll find it in Piazza Navona above the restaurant Hostaria dell’Orso which is a 14th century building overlooking the Tiber river. The club is spread out over three levels and it attracts a very glamorous crowd who come to listen to the house, dance and techno music.

Events in Rome

Settimana santa & pasqua.

On the Saturday before Palm Sunday, visitors flood into the city to gather into St Peter’s Square for the open-air mass. There are non-stop services throughout Holy Week, however some of the highlights of the event are the mass which takes place in the Colosseum late in the evening on Good Friday and the lavish picnics which have become a tradition that take place on Easter Monday.

Cosmophonies – Festival Internazionale di Ostia Antica

Held in the incredible ancient theatre of Ostia Antica, Cosmophonies takes place from June until mid-September. The festival includes performances from theatre, music and dance with previous acts including Sonic Youth and Morissey.

Stagione Estiva del Teatro dell’Opera

This operatic event takes place in the extraordinary location of an ancient archaeological site, delivering a truly unique and memorable experience for those attending. Dramatic lighting draws attention to the Roman ruins but the incredible musical performances still steal the show.

RomaEuropa Festival

RomaEuropa is a cutting-edge music and performance festival held between September to November. There’s a mix of international and upcoming acts who deliver eclectic performances across the arts of music, theatre and dance.

Rome Port Facilities & Location

Civitavecchia cruise port is located about an hour’s drive from Rome. Shore excursions are an easy way to get to the city center if you prefer not to negotiate public transportation. Civitavecchia also has a combined bus and train station that is about a 15-minute walk from the port entrance. Shuttle buses are available from the pier to the entrance of the port. From there, you can start the walk or take a local bus to the train station. The Civitavecchia cruise port terminal also has information desks to help give you ideas for what to do and where to go in the surrounding area and nearby Rome.

Top Sights & Attractions for Cruises To & From Rome

The colosseum.

The Colosseum is considered by many to be Rome’s greatest attraction, and if you haven’t been to Rome before, you’d be remiss not to see it. Even if you find its gruesome gladiator past unsettling, it’s still hard not to be wowed by the grandeur of its construction and the fact that this ancient amphitheater is so well preserved, some 2,000 years later. A shore excursion with a guided tour of the Colosseum is an excellent way to see the site as you’ll get to hear detailed stories of its history and the spectacles that were once held in the ring of the vast amphitheater. The Colosseum is also one of the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is the largest fountain in Rome and is also often considered to be the most beautiful. It gets its name from Tre Vie, which stands for “three ways”, since it was built at the meeting point of three streets. The fountain is constructed in the Baroque style and features Oceanus riding a chariot pulled by two sea horses being led by Tritons. If you want to increase your chances of visiting Rome again, legend has it that if you throw a coin in the water with your right hand over your left shoulder you’ll return to Rome someday.

Vatican City

The State of Vatican City is the smallest state in Europe in terms of both population and size. It is completely surrounded by the city of Rome on all sides, but has been independent of Italy since 1929. Vatican City is ruled by the Pope and serves as the center of authority for the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican’s best-known sites are St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel—home respectively to Michelangelo’s Pieta and his famous painted ceiling—along with heralded  Renaissance and Roman masterpieces by Bernini and Raphael.

Learn More About Rome Shore Excursions

Top things to do in rome, walk around trastevere.

This is a popular neighborhood in Rome to wander around and take in its pretty streets. Located right by the River Tiber, it is home to lively squares, an assortment of shops and artisan boutiques, authentic trattorias, and lively bars.

Tour the Catacombs

The catacombs were used as burial grounds for Christian and pagan citizens from the second century through the fifth century AD. The underground catacombs were created to find more burial space and consist of atmospheric subterranean passageways which you can explore on a guided tour.

Visit Bracciano

If you’ve seen all the sights of Rome before, consider using your day in port or time before your cruise from Rome departs to visit Bracciano, which is a picturesque town located atop a hill overlooking Lake Bracciano. It makes for a great day trip to wander around the pretty streets and visit its main attraction, Castello Odescalchi, a formidable castle built in the Renaissance military style.

What should I eat and drink in Rome?

Rome is famous for its coffee culture, whether you opt for espresso and or a frothy cappuccino. To drink like a local, only order a cappuccino before 11 am. Later in the day, order a un caffè (a shot of espresso) or un caffè macchiato (a shot of espresso with a dollop of steamed milk). If you’re in port in the early evening don’t miss out on enjoying aperitivi , drinks and snacks as Italians prepare for the evening ahead. Most bars offer an array of snacks during this time that are included in the cost of your drink. For a traditional Italian aperitif, order an Aperol Spritz or a sweet Fragolino sparkling wine.

Cuisine around Italy differs depending on the region you’re in. If you want to try traditional Roman dishes, try bucatini all’amatriciana or spaghetti alla carbonara . Roman cuisine is often simple, but delicious, using just a few ingredients that are fresh and prepared using traditional methods. Gelato is everywhere, and it’s not hard to find a scoop no matter what neighborhood you’re exploring. To experience a traditional gelateria, visit Giolitti, a family-run gelato shop that is located a short distance from the Pantheon. This gelato shop is over 120 years old and offers dozens of flavors.

What’s the culture and history of Rome?

The appeal of Rome never wanes. The city entices people with its beauty and culture, but mostly for the history you can find around every corner. Cruises from Rome will give you the opportunity to absorb the wonderful architecture and culture, and the special vibe of this iconic place.

Rome is Italy’s capital, but the land on which the city lies has served many other purposes over the past 2,700 years. Settlers were here as far back as the Ice Age, followed by Etruscans and later, the Romans, who presided over an era in which many of the incredible structures were built that are still marveled at today. Eventually, the Roman Empire fell and the papacy of the Catholic Church moved to Avignon. Rome sat mostly in squalor for several centuries before the papacy returned to Rome and the dawn of the Renaissance was on the horizon. Rome then became famous for the arts and the works of Michelangelo and Raphael, among many others.

Where can I go shopping near the Civitavecchia cruise port?

If you find yourself back in Civitavecchia after your time in Rome and need some more souvenirs, you’re in luck. There is plenty of shopping located near the cruise port. Just cross Via Garibaldi, which runs parallel to the sea promenade, and you’ll find several shops to browse.

Head a little bit further into town and you’ll come to Corso Centocelle, which has even more stores and is a pleasant area to shop since it is a pedestrian-only zone. If you have even more time to spare and don’t mind a longer walk or short taxi drive, you can find over two dozen specialty shops at La Scaglia, a shopping center located about a 25-minute walk from the port.

How can I get around Rome?

You have plenty of options. Rome’s metro system is reliable and easy to use since it only has three lines that intersect at Rome’s main rail terminal: Termini. You can get single journey tickets or day passes. More than 300 bus routes will get you close to most of the attractions, but you may still have to walk, particularly near the historic center as buses don’t travel down its narrow streets.

Official taxis in Rome are yellow and have a taxi sign atop the roof. Note that taxis often charge extra for baggage and rates may increase on holidays, Sundays, and late at night. If you call for a taxi, the fare may begin from the telephone request, not from the point of origin, so double check before reserving. Rome has two international airports: Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, also referred to as Fiumicino, located 18 miles southwest of Rome; and Ciampino International Airport, located nine miles southeast of Rome.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

Italy’s currency is the Euro. For cruises from Rome, travelers should have a supply of cash. Most places in Rome take credit cards, though cash may be preferred in markets or small, mom-and-pop style restaurants. It’s especially important to double-check if a card is accepted if you’re not planning on paying with cash.

To exchange cash for Euros, look for cash exchange offices or simply use the many ATMs around the city, although you may incur bank charges for exchanging cash in these. An ATM is called a bancomat in Rome.

Tipping in Italy often isn’t necessary. A service charge is usually already included in the bill, so double-check if that’s the case; feel free to tip more for stellar service, though know it’s not expected. It’s also recommended to tip in cash as opposed to on a credit card if you want to make sure it’s the server who gets the tip.

Rome, Italy Cruises

Top rome (civitavecchia) cruise deals, cruising to rome (civitavecchia).

It may be known as the Eternal City, but Rome is a great place to visit even if you don't have an eternity to spend exploring it. And while it's true that you could probably live out the rest of your days rummaging through the Italian capital without ever running out of great things to see and do, it's also possible to get a feel for the place in just a few short hours – perfect if you happen to be passing through on a Mediterranean cruise. The port itself is located at Civitavecchia , which is about an hour's drive away from the centre of Rome. Before heading into the city, you may want to take a quick look around the port, which is home to the National Archaeological Museum and a 16th-centry fortress built by Michelangelo. However, if time is of the essence then it's best to get straight to it, and from the moment you arrive in Rome you'll be surrounded by amazing sites and attractions. Among the first places to see is the Colosseum , which was built in the 1st century AD and is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Famous for its incredible scale and detail, this iconic landmark is one of the most enduring emblems of the Roman Empire, having hosted countless gladiatorial battles. To the west of the Colosseum is the Vatican City , which is of course home to St Peter's Square and Basilica , from where the Pope regularly addresses the world. The Sistine Chapel , meanwhile, is known for the frescoes that adorn its interior, the most notable of which can be found on the ceiling and were painted by Michelangelo. Rome's Modern Centre is also well worth exploring, and can be found to the north of the Colosseum. It's here that you'll find many of the city's most recognisable piazzas, as well as the stunning Trevi Fountain . Dropping a coin into the water and making a wish is a tradition that shouldn't be missed when you're visiting the city. This part of town is also known for its excellent shopping and dining, with many fine restaurants located along the Via Veneto . Italy is famous for its food, and you'll find the very best local cuisine on offer.

R ome’s cruise port of Civitavecchia puts you within easy reach of Italy’s capital. Ancient, sprawling and full of fascinating relics of Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque eras, Rome’s streets are simply something else.

Rome Cruise Highlights

Pick out your must sees and you’ll find yourself, possibly with a gelato in hand, exploring some of the world’s most famous monuments. If Rome’s hustle and bustle doesn’t appeal, there’s also the option to explore Italy’s great lakes, spend time on the coast or dig into one of the world’s best preserved Roman cities  - all within an hour’s drive of Rome’s cruise port.

History & culture

O ften referred to as an open air museum, Rome’s ancient city is impressive to say the least. The ancient Parthenon, the towering Colosseum and the compelling Vatican City all hold historic riches few capital cities can match. Beyond the ancient ruins, Rome’s museums and galleries curate works by Rome’s celebrated sculptors, artists and photographers. And, on the walls of warehouses, factories, flats and Metro Stations, vibrant murals brighten up otherwise dull spots. Get swept up in the myths and legends of the gladiator battles in the Colosseum or immerse yourself in contemporary art at MAXXI.

Food & drink

R ome’s cruise port is a haven for foodies. Whether you stay in Civitavecchia or travel into the capital, expect to eat - and eat well. The simplest pizza, made with hand-stretched dough, glistening with peppery olive oil, slicked with alla marinara and perfectly placed pearls of buffalo mozzarella, will burst with flavour. Rome’s signature dish, a Carbonara, controversially is served without cream. And ‘throw away’ cuts, including offal, make it into hearty Roman feasts changed little by time. Try a bit of everything with antipasti or scour the markets for ingredients to whip up a real taste of Italy when you sail home.

Featured Barcelona Destinations to visit

Santa marinella.

Dubbed ‘The pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea’, Santa Marinella is a coastal town worth exploring. Just 20 minutes south of Civitavecchia, the sandy beach is the star attraction for some. Though the seafood restaurants, working fishing harbour and quiet streets have a serene allure that Rome can’t match.

Ostia - Ostia Antica

There’s no better place in Italy to wander among archeological ruins than Ostia. This modern, coastal town was considered by the Romans to be their first colony and Ostia has played an important part in Rome’s history over the centuries. The main attraction is Ostia Antica, a Roman city that’s extraordinarily well preserved. Wander through homes, shops, warehouses, a Roman theatre, temples and the Ostia Synagogue for a real glimpse into Roman life.

Lake Bracciano

Swap the bustling streets of Rome for the laid back shores of Lake Bracciano. Lungolago sits on the south-west shore of the lake and is less than an hour’s drive from Civitavecchia. Explore the beach, muse over which lakeside restaurant to dine in or take to the water. Windsurfing, swimming and boating are all popular activities on this shimmering volcanic lake.

What not to miss in Rome

The colosseum.

A cruise to Rome gives you the chance to explore one of the world’s most famous monuments - The Colosseum. Commissioned by Titus Flavius Vespasian in 70 AD, the imposing amphitheatre hosted gladiator games, fights, simulated hunts and battles to entertain the 50,000 strong crowds that gathered here. The ancient ruins of the amphitheatre still stand today, hosting exhibitions and shows across the year.

The Sistine Chapel

It’s worth making the journey from Rome’s cruise port to Rome for the Sistine Chapel alone.  Michelangelo’s most famous works, his ceiling frescoes, draw thousands of eyes towards these celebrated ceilings every day. But do take time to admire the walls too. Works by Pinturicchio, Botticelli, Signorelli, Ghirlandaio and Perugino adorn the walls and are often overlooked.

Testaccio Market

There’s no better place to sample a taste of Rome than the Testaccio Market. Around 100 stalls sell their wares to local residents, which includes everything from bread and fish to homewares and haircuts. Watch Rome’s everyday life play out or pick up a very Roman sandwich filled with tripe and kidneys (other fillings are available!).

Tips for cruising to Rome

Currency considerations.

T he official currency in Rome is the Euro (EUR). Major credit cards are accepted across the city, but most businesses, especially smaller shops, cafes and stalls prefer cash. ATMs are easy to find, but it is worth carrying EUR for convenience and to avoid any potential credit card fees for foreign transactions.

Customs / traditions to be aware of

I n Rome, tipping isn’t expected, but it is welcomed. Expect to tip 10% for good service, and always use cash. In the city’s religious sites, wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and legs (shorts for both sexes must reach the knee or below).

Making the most use of short durations in port

I f you only have one day in port on your Rome cruise, the easiest way to tick off the top sights is to buy a ticket for the hop on, hop off bus tours. With stops at the Colosseum, Vatican, Spanish Steps and more, you’ll get a fantastic overview of Rome for the price of the bus fare - and freedom to choose how long you spend at each stop.

R ome’s public transport system isn’t always the most efficient way to get to the central attractions. Skip the small metro and tram network and travel by bus. Roads are prone to congestion and, if time is in short supply, it may be quicker to hire an electric bike to see the city.

Y es, Civitavecchia does have a beach. Spiaggia il pirgo is a soft sand beach just a short walk south of Civitavecchia cruise port. North of the port (a 15 minute drive away) La Frasca is a 6km stretch of reef famous for its rock pools and fishing history.

How long do cruises stop in Rome?

M ost cruises stop in Rome for just one day. The time in port varies from cruise to cruise but a minimum stay would be around 8 - 10 hours. Docking at the port of Civitavecchia, the journey to Rome takes 1hr 20 mins by train or by car.

Twilight over River Tibor and the dome of San Pietro, Vatican, Rome, Lazio, Italy. Visit the Rome forum on a Holland America Line European cruise.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

When you embark on a cruise to Rome with Holland America Line you experience its bustling modernism along with its rich history. You can walk in the footsteps of emperors, have coffee in Renaissance piazzas and see contemporary art all in one afternoon. Your sightseeing time in Rome begins at the nearby port of Civitavecchia, a seaside town with roots that stretch back to the Etruscan era. Take note of the Forte Michelangelo (both Bramante and Michelangelo had a hand in its design), and the lungomare , a lively stretch along the sea with beach clubs, bars and restaurants.

Once in the Eternal City you can fill your day with museums, churches, archaeological sites, traditional trattorias, artisan shops and, of course, gelato. The Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are Rome's superstar attractions, but there are plenty of quieter gems to explore. For food lovers there are the markets in Campo de' Fiori or the slightly farther flung Testaccio. The hip neighborhood of Monti, next to the Colosseum, has a vibrant piazza scene and boutique shopping, while the Villa Borghese offers a green oasis with a view towards Saint Peter’s Basilica and the masterpiece-filled Galleria Borghese. Although Rome might not have been built in one day, you'll certainly be able to see its highlights on our Rome cruises along with the top things to do there in 24 hours.

Italy cruise package – combine Venice, Florence, and Rome with a Mediterranean cruise

Cruise package Italy: View of Tuscany

Combining a trip to Venice, Florence, and Rome as part of your Italy cruise vacation is easier to plan and book than you may think.

Start your journey in Venice, where you can explore the city’s famous canals and stunning architecture. Then travel by train to Florence, where you can admire Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David or experience the Tuscan countryside. Finally, use the fast train to visit ancient Rome, taking in all the iconic sights like the Colosseum and the Vatican.

Quick navigation

Plan and book your own vacation

Our Italy cruise package suggestion to visit Venice, Florence, and Rome is entirely customizable. You can even reverse the package to visit Rome before traveling to Florence and Venice to begin your cruise from the port of Venice, Ravenna, or Trieste.

2 days in Venice, 2 days in Florence, and 4 days in Rome before your start your cruise

If you are visiting Italy for the first time, or even a returning customer, we recommend at least two days in each destination and ideally three or four days in Rome if time and budget allow.

With at least two days in each, you will have time to explore and experience the best of these exciting cities. Enjoy taking things at your own pace by opting for walking tours or using local buses or trams. If you prefer a knowledgeable guide, join small group tours to world-famous sights or even day excursions to see the surrounding countryside.

Arrive in Venice

Grand Canal. Venice

Book a flight from your nearest international airport to Venice, Italy, for your outbound flight. For your inbound flight (your journey home again), book a flight from the final destination city of your cruise back to your nearest international airport.

If you are doing a closed-loop cruise (departing from and returning to the same port), your departure airport for your inbound flight will be Rome for this package.

For example, if you are flying from New York, then you would book a flight as follows: Outbound: New York to Venice VCE Inbound: Rome ROM to New York (flight home)

If you are traveling from London, you will book: Outbound: London LON to Venice VCE Inbound: Rome ROM to London LON (flight home)

And so on. Check the date of your chosen cruise, then work out which date you want to fly out and which date you will fly home after your cruise. Leave plenty of time to get to the airport at the end of your cruise. We recommend a minimum of 5 hours from when your ship docks to when your flight home departs.

This type of ticket is called an open-jaw ticket. So your international flight will be into Venice and home from Rome. Venice Marco Polo Airport (Venezia Airport VCE) is the international airport in Venice. It is located on the mainland, about 16 km from Venice Island.

The international airport in Rome is Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino (L’aeroporto di Roma-Fiumicino FCO), located 35km southwest of Rome.

Transport from Marco Polo Airport in Venice

From Marco Polo Airport in Venice, many transport options are available to get to Venice Island. The central transport hub on Venice Island is called Piazzale Roma. You can walk or transfer onto a Vaporetto (waterbus) from Piazzale Roma to get to your hotel.

We recommend taking cash in euros with you, as not all buses and taxis accept credit cards (even though they should!)

Buses are located outside the arrival terminals. You can buy bus tickets from machines in the luggage collection area or the ticket office in the arrivals lounge. The fare is around 2 euros per person and takes about 35-40 minutes. Note that any “express” bus will be more expensive but will get you there quicker with fewer stops.

There are plenty of taxis outside the arrival terminals at the airport. The official taxi company at the airport is Cooperativa Artigiana Radiotaxi . Confirm the price with your driver before you start. It is a fixed fare and costs around 40 euros for a one-way journey from the airport to Venice Island. The journey time is about 25-30 minutes. If you arrive late in the evening, the taxi fare may be higher.

Water taxis are available from the airport to Venice Island. After luggage collection, look for the signs for “Water Transport.” You will find a moving walkway on the terminal’s first floor. Take this straight to the dockside.

Purchase tickets at the ticket machines at airport baggage collection or onboard the water taxi. Have some cash in euros with you if you want to pay onboard.

The price for a one-way journey with a water taxi from the airport is around 100-120 euros, and the journey time is about 70 minutes. If you are traveling in a group, share the cost to make it cheaper per person. Tell the water taxi driver which hotel you are staying at so he can get you to the closest stop.

A City Pass for convenience

A convenient way to travel in Venice is by prepaying your public transport. Do this by purchasing a  Venezia Unica City Pass . You can use this pass for your transfers, bus, and water bus transport and even save on entrance fees for museums, guided tours, palaces, and churches. The transportation costs much less per person using the city pass. Purchase your pass before you leave home.

Alternatively, you can book private airport transfers and have a driver waiting for you in arrivals if you do not want to be bothered or are unsure about finding your way to the airport.

Where to stay in Venice

We recommend staying on Venice Island. It’s the best option if you want to discover the beauty of Venice when you only have a few days there.

The alternative is to stay in Venice Mestre on the mainland, but you must take a local bus each time you want to get to Venice Island as it’s too far to walk. It’s just more convenient and charming to stay on Venice Island.

Here are some of our favorite hotels in Venice . We have included top-rated hotels and more affordable ones, so there is something for everyone.

We recommend staying in a hotel that is at least 4-star. This way, you will get a good standard of room, convenient amenities, and good service. The concierge can advise on local transport and provide city maps.

Hotels in the Santa Croce district

The district of Santa Croce is close to the transport hub Piazzale Roma on Venice Island. This is located at the entrance to the island and is very popular with travelers booking cruises from Venice as the hotels are easy to get to, and the logistics to get to your ship are simpler.

From Santa Croce, St. Mark’s Square is a 25-minute walk through the winding streets, or you can hop on a Vaporetto water bus outside the hotel.

  • Carlton on the Grand Canal
  • Santa Chiara Hotel
  • Hotel Canal Grande

Hotels in Cannaregio (close to Santa Lucia train station)

  • BW Premier Collection CHC Continental
  • Radisson Collection Hotel, Palazzo Nani Venice
  • Ai Mori d’Oriente Hotel

Hotels in the San Marco district, close to St Mark’s Square

If you want to be close to the historic heart of Venice Island, then stay close to St Mark’s Square at one of these recommended hotels:

  • Hotel Cavalletto & Doge Orseolo
  • Hotel Casanova
  • Baglioni Hotel Luna
  • Hotel le Isole
  • Star Hotels Splendid
  • Hotel Bonvecchiati

To get to these hotels from Piazzale Roma, take a Vaporetto to Saint Mark’s Square (the stop is San Marco/Vallaresso).

Alternatively, a water taxi from the airport can take you to the hotel’s private landing. And from this private landing, your hotel can book your Gondola ride.

The best way to spend two days in Venice, Italy

Use the links below for two days of sightseeing in Venice to pack as much as possible during your time there.

Day 1: The best of Venice island

Day 2: visit the outlying islands in the venetian lagoon: murano, burano, and torcello, getting from venice to florence.

The next stop is Florence (Firenze), the beautiful Renaissance capital of Tuscany. From Venice, the easiest and quickest way to travel to Florence is by train.

Travel from the train station on Venice island called Venezia Santa Lucia (Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia), located in the Santa Croce district close to Piazzale Roma.

The journey time is around 2.5 hours. There are several different routes, so look for the shortest journey time. Choose the option “Le Frecce” (and not “regional train”). Le Frecce is the high-speed train giving you a direct, non-stop route. Economy tickets start at around 40 euros per person, with discounts for seniors. There are food and drinks available for purchase on the train. Be sure to choose the English language on their booking site so you can read and understand all the conditions of purchase before you pay.

Upon arrival at Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence, your city-center hotel is within walking distance. If you prefer not to carry your luggage, taxis are available outside the train station.

2 fantastic days in Florence, the heart of Tuscany, Italy

Florence is one of the most beautiful and well-known cities in the world and a popular tourist destination for a good reason. The city is packed with historical sites and cultural attractions, including some of the most famous art museums in the world. There’s also plenty to do in the picturesque surrounding area of Tuscany.

One of the best ways to get around Florence is by foot to see many of the sites during your visit. You can also use the city buses or take a taxi.

Where to stay in Florence

A huge accommodation choice is available in the city’s heart—everything from apartments and villas to hotels of all standards and all price ranges. We recommend the following hotels, all of which offer good front desk service, a great breakfast, and an excellent location.

  • Hotel Brunelleschelli
  • NH Collection Palazzo Gaddi
  • Mercure Firenze Centro
  • Morandi alla Crocetta

Day 1: The Best of Florence

Florence on another perfect day

Start at the heart of Florence, at Piazza del Duomo.

Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo is Florence’s main square in the center of town, next to the famous Duomo (cathedral). This is one of Europe’s most iconic buildings with its crowning glory, Brunelleschi’s noble dome, visible from afar. The Basilica – or Dumo – is called the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower (Basilica Di Santa Maria Del Fiore). It is a major tourist attraction due to its size, architecture, and exciting history.

It’s also the location for many important events in Florence. On one side, you will find the Baptistery, with its glittering Gates of Paradise, and Florence’s City Hall on the other.

While at Piazza del Duomo, there are two ways to get your first spectacular bird’s eye view over Florence.

First, you can climb between the dome’s layers 186 steps to reach the top; your kids will love this too. Queues can be long to get inside – especially during the peak summer season – so we recommend buying tickets ahead.

Or enjoy the view from Giotto’s Bell Tower . At 90 meters tall, it stands just across from the Duomo. From here, you will get an amazing 360-degree view.

From the Duomo, walk along Via de Martelli, turning onto Via de Gori to reach the excellent food market of Florence, Mercato Centrale.

Mercato Centrale

At Mercato Centrale, you will find Florence’s most famous food market, where all the locals go to buy their groceries. It opens daily from 10 am until midnight. Stop here to visit the many food booths to sample Florence’s finest treats. On the next level, find the food court and sample fresh Italian food and its best.

Next, we recommend that all art and history enthusiasts visit the Uffizi Gallery. Take your time walking there via Piazza Della Signoria. Built in 1565 to celebrate the Medici family wedding, this square is surrounded by great shopping and often hosts musical entertainment.

Try pastries or stuffed focaccia bread at Cantinetta del Verrazzano . If you prefer street-side eating or a sandwich on the go, there is a tiny traditional fiaschetteria called I Fratellini, just a 2-minute walk from Cantinetta del Verrazzano.

Uffizi Gallery

Galleria Degli Uffizi is a fantastic gallery and museum next to Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio. It is Italy’s most visited art gallery, and many cultural exhibitions are also held here. You will find an extensive collection of sculptures, paintings, and artifacts from Florence’s past. Botticelli’s work, including Primavera and The Birth of Venus, is best known.

From the Uffizi Gallery, it takes two minutes to walk to the start of Ponte Vecchio. Cross the bridge to get to Pitti Palace.

Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio is one of Florence’s most famous landmarks; built-in 1345, it has survived two major floods. Many tourists love to shop at the quaint little shops here, with jewelry being the most popular item on sale.

Pitti Palace

The former residence of the Medici family, Pitti Palace is now Florence’s largest museum and home to some of the world’s best art collections. The gardens are gorgeous and perfect for the kids to run around.

After your visit, head back across Ponte Vecchio. Walk towards the Basilica of Santa Croce to see the burial place of Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli, and Michelangelo. After having lunch at one of the many local eateries, walk via the Duomo to Galleria dell’Accademia, about 10 minutes away.

Galleria dell’Accademia

The Accademia Gallery of Florence ( La Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze ) features the original Michelangelo David statue, Florence’s most famous work of Art. For me, it is worth the visit to see this.

Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco is a lively square just a short walk from Galleria dell’Accademia that connects you to the rest of the city and beyond with local buses. It is one of the best places to meet if you are in a group and need a common meeting point during the day. From here, hop on a number 7 bus that takes you to the hills to visit Fiesole. Once there, you can see Florence in full glory in front of you. The best view is from the grounds of the monastery of San Francesco.

Fiesole is also the location of Florence’s Maggio Musicale. This is a collection of outdoor concerts, and if you are lucky enough to see one during your stay, we can assure you it’s an unforgettable experience. Check out their website for concert dates and times.

Piazzale Michelangelo

We recommend a local bus or taxi to Piazzale Michelangelo in the evening. Located high on a hill on the other side of the Arno River, this square is ideal for beautiful panoramic views of Florence. Benches allow you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the city below. Choose a clear day and try and get there at sunset for a spectacular view.

You can walk from the city center, but it’s a long climb. Take a taxi or bus there and walk back into town afterward. It’s much easier walking down the hill and a great way to spend the evening, finishing with shopping in the town center.

Day 2: Choose Your Day Trip from Florence

Vernaca Bay, Cinque Terre, Italy

It’s almost impossible to recommend one place over another when visiting Tuscany. With so much to see, only you can decide how to spend your second day. If you have not seen enough of the center, stay and do everything you didn’t have time for on day one.

Otherwise, book a small group tour with a local guide. Choose from our personal favorites below. All the transfers will be included in the price of your tour.

The best day trips from Florence

  • Siena, located nearly 80km south of Florence, is known for its 5-century-old horse race, Palio di Siena, and Gothic architecture. Palio di Siena is held in the historical center in July and August amid a festive atmosphere. Competing neighborhoods meet in the center, Il Campo, which is transformed into a race track.
  • Cinque Terre – the five colorful seaside villages on the Italian Riviera are located on the coast 175km northwest of Florence. Hiking trails are fantastic, or for the less energetic, visit the villages for quaint shopping and stunning views.
  • Chianti – famous for its vineyards, castles, market towns, and monasteries, the region of Chianti, located 50 km from Florence, offers iconic views of the Tuscan landscape straight out of a Renaissance painting. Chianti is one of the main reasons why visitors flock to Italy.
  • The northwest Tuscany towns of Pisa and Lucca are doable in one day. Visit the famous leaning Tower of Pisa and the small elegant city of Lucca.
  • The hill town of San Gimignano is a picture-perfect medieval Tuscan town. After walking the center of the city and stopping for Gelato, visit a vineyard that offers wine and olive oil tasting, a truffle hunt, or a Tuscan cooking class with a spectacular view of the unique skyline of the town’s 14 stone towers.

It is possible to book a day tour to Pisa, Siena, and San Gimignano, all in a day. We did this, and it was a fantastic, memorable day. Be prepared for a long day; bring plenty of bottled water and good walking shoes.

How to get from Florence to Rome

Colosseum at night, Rome, Italy

Depart Florence by high-speed train and head to Rome. Buy tickets online via the Trenitalia website or at the ticket office at the Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station.

Using the high-speed train Frecciarossa the journey time is 1 hour and 35 minutes, costing around 40 euros per person. The journey finishes at Rome’s central station, Rome Termini.

How to get from Rome Termini (train station) to central Rome

The main train station of Rome, Rome Termini, is centrally located. But we would not recommend walking around the area at night. The best, safest, and quickest way to get to your hotel is by using one of the official taxis outside the train station. It will be a fixed charge. If you are approached, do not accept a ride from anyone else offering a taxi.

Where to stay in Rome

Here are our best recommendations for hotels in Rome for cruise guests:

  • Hotel Savoy Roma
  • Hotel Mancino 12
  • Augustana House
  • Hotel Forum Roma
  • Hotel Accademia
  • Bettoja Hotel Mediterraneo
  • Pantheon Hotel
  • Hotel Barocco
  • Napoleon Hotel Roma
  • Relais Fontana Di Trevi

4 ways to see the best of Rome before your cruise from Civitavecchia cruise port

Our daily itineraries cover four primary areas of Rome, each of which you can explore as much or as little as you have time. And in any order you like. There is so much history and architecture to admire; it’s a good idea to pack a pocket guidebook so you don’t miss anything.

Use the links below to read where to go and what to see in the Eternal City.

Alternatively, book at least one guided tour before you leave home. A guided tour is a great way to explore imperial Rome to see the best and most famous sights.

  • 1: The Jewish Quarter, Trastevere, Vatican City, Sistine Chapel & Vatican Museum
  • 2: Piazza Navona, The Pantheon and Trevi Fountain
  • 3: The Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese
  • 4: Ancient Rome, Roman Forum, Vittoriano, and the Colosseum

Getting from Rome city center to Port of Civitavecchia

The Port of Civitavecchia, where most cruise ships depart, is approximately 78km northwest of Rome. Plan accordingly because it is quite a distance and takes time. To get there from your hotel in Rome, you have these alternatives:

Private Transfer

If you are more than four people, I recommend booking a private transfer for pick up at your hotel before you leave home. Tell them when you want to check in at the cruise port, and they will calculate your pickup time from your hotel to get you there in good time. You need to get dropped off at the port service center, Largo Della Pace. It is the main terminal for all shuttle buses that will take you to your cruise ship. The shuttle buses are all free of charge within the port.

Ask your hotel about pre-booking a cab. Allow plenty of time to get to the port. Traffic and queues are unpredictable, especially in the high season. Taxis charge a flat rate; establish this with your driver before you start. The cost is high – around 120 euros from the city to the port. You need to get dropped off at the port service center, Largo Della Pace. It is the main terminal for all shuttle buses that will take you to your cruise ship. The shuttle buses are all free of charge within the port.

Train from  Termini Station

Trains will save you money. You can buy tickets to board a local train from Rome’s Termini train station for around 5 euros to Civitavecchia train station. You can pay with a major credit card. There are ticket windows (be prepared to queue) and automated machines at the train station.

There are shops and cafes in Termini station, a tourist office, and a shopping center on the lower floor. The name of Italy’s train system is  Trenitalia,  and if you want to, you can book tickets online before you leave home. Choose “ Rome Termini to Civitavecchia Porto “

Remember to get your ticket stamped at a machine before boarding the train. If you forget to do this, you risk a heavy fine and show an invalid (unstamped) ticket on board.

From Civitavecchia train station, take the local bus for 2 euros to get to the port’s service center, Largo Della Pace. The journey takes about 10 minutes, and buses leave every 20 minutes. Tickets can be bought from inside the train station.

Alternatively, you could walk from Civitavecchia train station to Largo Della Pace to save money. It is about 1.5km and takes about 15 minutes, but remember you have your luggage too. Taxis can be hard to find from the train station, but this is an option if you succeed.

Largo Della Pace is the main terminal for all shuttle buses that will take you to your cruise ship. The shuttle buses are all free of charge within the port.

Cruises from Rome – which cruise line suits you best?

All major cruise lines offer fantastic itineraries and cruise ships for Spring and Summer cruises.

For example, Royal Caribbean has four cruise ships out of Civitavecchia Port – Wonder of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas, and Brilliance of the Seas. Itineraries include the Greek Isles, Italy, and the Adriatic; Western Mediterranean and Holy Land Cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers cruises from Rome to the Mediterranean (Italy, France & Spain), Greek Isles and Italy, and Greece & Croatia. Unfortunately, we won’t see their latest ship Prima in Mediterranean waters yet, but these cruises are available on board Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Epic, and Norwegian Gem.

Celebrity Cruises have seven and 8-night cruises in the Mediterranean (Italy, France & Spain), Italy, and the Greek Isles. And longer voyages including Florence, Portofino & Venice; Greek Isles and Malta; Italien Riviera & France; Greek Isles & Malta; Italy, Croatia & Montenegro; and an 11-night cruise including Italy, Turkey, and the Greek Isles. Which one is on your bucket list? Celebrity has ships offering these cruises from Rome: Celebrity Reflection, Celebrity Constellation, and the fabulous newer ships Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Beyond.

MSC Cruises have put some of the best cruise ships on great itineraries from Rome: MSC Seaside and MSC Meraviglia, which we recommend you choose over the older MSC Splendida. Cruises starting in Rome are to the Western Mediterranean with slight variations in ports of call depending on when you cruise and which cruise ship you choose.

Extending your vacation after your cruise

If you plan on spending more time in Rome or the surrounding countryside or even heading further south onto Naples and the Amalfi Coast, using the regional trains is easy, cheap, and convenient.

Port Info: Whittier Cruise Ship Terminal, West Camp Road Whittier, AK 99664 | Directions via Google Maps

Parking: Parking facilities at the terminal are unavailable. Additionally, transportation to and from the port is limited due to the unique access route—a tunnel that alternates direction every 30 minutes. This restriction may cause delays or challenges in accessing the terminal, so plan your travel accordingly and consider alternative transportation arrangements to ensure a smooth journey to the port. We highly recommend arranging transportation to and from the port via booking a pre or post-cruise Princess Transfer service, ensuring a convenient and seamless connection between the terminal and the airport.

Best Place To Stay In Rome Before Cruise preview image

Considering a stay in Rome before or after your cruise ? This remarkable city's rich history and vibrant culture draw travelers from around the world. Rome boasts iconic attractions and memorable dining opportunities, catering to diverse interests.

When choosing your Rome accommodations, factors like budget and preferences come into play. Staying near the historic center, Centro Storico, generally incurs higher costs.

However, this lively heart of Rome provides the best immersion into its ancient essence, making it a favored choice for cruise travelers. Opting for proximity to landmarks like Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, and Spanish Steps places you amidst Rome's renowned sites. Plus, you'll be within walking distance of the Vatican and a variety of dining options.

Hotels around Termini station, Rome's central train hub, provide another option. With multiple subway lines and bus routes converging here, you'll have an ideal base for exploring the city.

Termini station also facilitates travel to Civitavecchia, where shuttles link train passengers with the cruise port. Make the most of your Rome stay before or after your cruise adventure.

Rome Hotels with Shuttle to Cruise Port

If you're looking for transportation between Rome and Civitavecchia port, there aren't hotels with shuttle services, but many can arrange private transfers.

Instead of focusing solely on hotel shuttles, consider factors like location, guest reviews, and pricing when selecting a hotel. Private transfers, costing around 130 Euro for two people, offer a convenient door-to-door service.

While private transfers are pricier, they ensure a comfortable, hassle-free journey. Shared shuttles are an alternative, available through platforms like Expedia, usually costing a third of private transfers. Cruise lines also offer transfers, but these tend to be expensive.

For a budget-friendly option, choose the train. Express trains cost 10 Euro one way or 15 Euro round-trip. Children under 12 travel free with a paying adult, and all children 4 and under travel free. Trains connect the port with Rome in under an hour, and while you'll handle your own bags, it's a cost-effective choice.

What are the Best Hotels in Rome (Centro Storico) ?

When you spend a night or more in Rome, it's a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city, whether it's your first visit to the Eternal City or not. With various accommodation options, your budget is often the only constraint.

Hotels in the Centre Storico are designed for foreign visitors, offering English-speaking staff and diverse styles from traditional to modern. Throughout the city, major chains, boutique hotels, independent lodgings, and bed and breakfasts cater to your preferences.

Most rooms are equipped with essential technology, including USB ports for device charging and Wi-Fi.

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.

This Luxury Hotel in Rome Was Named One of the Best Hotels in the World by T+L Readers — and Has the Most Beautiful Courtyard I've Ever Seen

Here's what makes Hotel de Russie Travel + Leisure readers' favorite hotel in Rome.

cruise with rome stay

Food and Drink

Amenities and experiences, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of Hotel de Russie, a Rocco Forte Hotel

Walking through Rome’s Villa Borghese gardens, my husband and I came to a lookout point with a view of Piazza del Popolo. I, however, paid little attention to the neoclassical elliptical square, even with a 79-foot obelisk in the center. I was too busy photographing the most enticing courtyard I’d ever seen. It had three rows of bright-white umbrellas abutting a pale-pink building with turquoise shutters — the kind of scene that made me crave a Spritz and castelvetrano olives because I couldn't help but picture the chic, linen-clad folk enjoying aperitivo on that patio.

About three hours later, I checked into Hotel de Russie , which I picked because it was named T+L readers’ favorite hotel in Rome in 2023 and among the best city hotels in Europe . These 2023 World’s Best Awards landed the Rocco Forte hotel — one of two in Rome — a coveted spot on this year’s T+L 500.

Hotel de Russie, Rome

  • The location: it's a minute's walk to Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps and five to 10 minutes on foot to the Villa Borghese gardens and the Trevi Fountain.
  • The idyllic courtyard is one of the most iconic in Europe and the perfect place for aperitivo .
  • The luxurious rooms — with turquoise-trimmed shutters on the windows — made me feel like I was staying at my own chic apartment in Rome, with all the amenities of a Rocco Forte hotel.
  • The spa has a hammam, a sauna, Irene Forte facials, and a gym.

And yet somehow, even knowing the details of Hotel de Russie’s accolades, I was shocked when, after check-in, I walked across the lobby, through the open doors, to the exact venue I’d painstakingly photographed a few hours before. I didn’t even make it up to my room. I asked the concierge if he could hold our bags while we had a drink on the patio, and a few minutes later, I was seated beneath a bright-white umbrella as a server put down a Negroni for me, a gin martini with a twist for my husband, and a trio of snacks — potato chips, almonds, and olives. I couldn’t believe my luck. I was a pair of really short bangs, a striped silk scarf, and a vintage Vespa away from living out Audrey Hepburn’s "Roman Holiday" life.

Maya Kachroo-Levine/Travel + Leisure

We lingered for a few hours, leisurely succumbing to the snack menu — tissue paper–thin prosciutto on crusty bread, the perfect complement to a second Negroni. I checked my Google Map of Rome recommendations and found we were stumbling distance from my cousin's go-to Roman wine bar, Buccone Vini e Olii , and a cozy restaurant favored by one of my colleagues, Hostaria Da Pietro . Evening plans? Check. The problem? I had no interest in ever leaving this courtyard.

Here, my review of the iconic Hotel de Russie — a Rocco Forte hotel and longtime T+L reader favorite.

Once we wrapped up our prolonged patio stint, we ascended to our spacious Deluxe Room. It was nearly 450 square feet, which is impressive for a standard hotel room in a major European city (the entry-level rooms are just a touch smaller, at about 375 square feet; the junior suites start at 540 square feet; and the Superior Suites start at 650 square feet). For a true taste of Roman luxury, the special suites and Forte suites have terraces or French balconies, with heavenly views of the hotel's courtyard or the surrounding historic buildings.

When I got to our room, I twisted the gold knob on one of three dual-paned windows. I poked my head out the window — no screens, this is Europe — taking in the light yellow, beige, and bright coral facades of the apartment buildings across the street, all with bright blue and green shutters. Across the street, I could see friends gathering on a balcony for sunset and laundry swinging in the breeze on an adjacent rooftop. It felt like I had my own little Roman apartment — with a marble bathroom and Rocco Forte hotel amenities.

Hotel de Russie has two restaurants; the Stravinskij Bar is a magical, umbrella-shaded terrace with a small indoor operation as well. The main restaurant is Le Jardin de Russie, which inhabits the upper terrace (up a set of alfresco stone stairs from Stravinskij Bar) and an adjacent dining room. Le Jardin serves a fantastic breakfast buffet and elevated classics — like grilled whole branzino. For something a little less formal, Stravinskij Bar serves dinner, too, and makes a lovely pasta all'Amatriciana, which is admittedly plentiful in Rome, but can you ever really have too much crispy guanciale?

The concierge team at Hotel de Russie can help you set up tours or book tickets to museums or attractions. We visited in the summer when advance ticketing was crucial, but the concierge could easily book us same-day entry to the Colosseum. The hotel also offers tours that are exclusively available to de Russie guests; one of the newest experiences, called a Journey Through Time at the Roman Forum, visits sites such as the Basilica Ulpia with an art historian, with the option to add on an extravagant tasting menu at Rimessa Roscioli afterward.

My husband and I spent a fantastic morning in the spa, starting with a seven-mile run in the gym, an ill-conceived attempt to work off all the amatriciana. From there, we went to the hammam, slipping into the massive blue-tiled warm pool. After a long soak, he hit the sauna while I read my book on a poolside lounge chair, enjoying the calming effect of the silver- and blue-tiled walls that seemed to glow as if the room were encrusted with precious gems. The spa also offers facials using Irene Forte skin care products and massages, and the hotel is expanding the space.

Hotel de Russie can make a family room by connecting two Deluxe Rooms. While I didn't encounter a lot of children during my stay, I love to see families bring children of any age to a European city — There's so much to experience! The food and culture more than make up for the transatlantic flight! — and would definitely return to the hotel with a kid in tow. The concierge can assist parents in coordinating family-friendly activities, and there is a Rocco Forte kids program for children aged 0 to 16, where each young visitor gets a Rocco Forte passport.

Six of the hotel's 120 rooms are accessible, and wheelchairs are available upon request. The hotel's ground-floor common areas are accessible, though there are "some limitations in the upper side of the historical garden," according to a hotel spokesperson. As a brand, Rocco Forte is keen to reduce its carbon footprint, and at de Russie, there is an electric e-tuk for guest rides and charging available for electric cars. To reduce energy use, all Rocco Forte hotels (including de Russie) hosted candlelit evenings once a week during the winter months, where the restaurants and bars were illuminated only by flickering candles. The hotel also prioritizes digital check-in to eliminate paper waste and frequently donates furniture and amenities to local charities (recently, while refreshing the de Russie gym, all the old equipment was donated to the Blind Association on nearby Via Margutta).

Check the hotel website for deals because Rocco Forte offers generous ones. The occasionally offered Forte Escapes discount, for example, gets guests up to 25 percent off a stay of two nights or more. I'm a traveler who swears by her American Express Platinum card, and card members will be glad to know that Hotel de Russie is indeed part of Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts. Those booking their stay with an American Express will get a 12 p.m. check-in, 4 p.m. check-out, room upgrade if available, daily breakfast for two, and $100 credit for food and drink.

Please do not wait until 6:00 PM to head back on the train to Civitavecchia.

Give yourself more time.

Thanks for the advice! I'm panicked just thinking about it!

It works, but the key is to plan ahead. Here's an example: you plan to take the 3:45 train back. You get there and it just left. You have to wait 30-45 minutes before the next one goes. So just calculate your times and you will be OK.

You're lucky your ship is not leaving until 8 PM.

Jump on this right away so you don't get shut out! They are selling tickets now for all of June.

https://tickets.museivaticani.va/home

There is a later Frecce train at 18:27 that arrives at 19:14 that would work if everything goes right but would be too tight for my comfort.

The beauty of the Frecce trains is an assigned seat in a car with working air conditioning, which you will appreciate after a day in the sun and heat of Rome.

Depending on your arrival time, you could also take a Frecce into the city in the morning. There's one at 9:16 that arrives to Termini just after 10 AM. From Termini you can hop on the metro and be at the Vatican museums fairly quickly.

I agree about the Frecce trains with one consideration--if you spend your day near the Vatican and never get over toward Termini, the very frequent Regionale trains from Roma S. Pietro save the time you'd need to get to Termini and the train ride is only about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on what time you board. They go every 15 to 30 minutes at that time of day, too.

Good point. It's a big tradeoff, the regional is closer (to the Vatican anyway) and cheaper, but it's also uncomfortable. There is zero chance of getting a seat as you'd be boarding at the third or fourth stop (depends on the train) during rush hour.
