The two towers offered a new perspective on a memorable scene, the return of the king explored the backstory of a major character, the rings of power's second season explained the series' biggest twist, key takeaways.
- The second season of Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opened with a flashback.
- This followed in the tradition of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King films.
- These flashbacks recontextualized the stories' prior events.
The following contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 1, now streaming on Prime Video.
Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes place in a separate continuity from any previous adaptation of The Lord of the Rings . However, given the massive cultural significance of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, it is unsurprising that The Rings of Power draws some inspiration from Jackson's version of Middle-earth. Certain character designs, like that of the Balrog, are very similar, and the two projects even share some crew. Concept artist John Howe contributed to both, and Howard Shore, who scored the films, composed the introductory theme music for The Rings of Power . Wētā Workshop also created props for both.
The second season of The Rings of Power continued a narrative tradition from Jackson's films . The second and third installments of Jackson's trilogy each opened with a flashback that recontextualized the events of the previous films by revealing new information to the audience. As well as recapping important moments, these flashbacks rewarded viewers for sticking with the series by giving them greater insight into the characters of The Lord of the Rings . The first episode of the second season of The Rings of Power began similarly, taking advantage of this tried and true formula to deliver an attention-grabbing opening about Sauron's life before the events of the series.
Gandalf Was Not the Only Wizard Who Changed His Color in The Lord of the Rings
In J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novel, Saruman the White underwent a colorful transformation when he joined the forces of evil.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers opened with reused footage from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring . It showed Gandalf's confrontation with the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, culminating in them plummeting into the dark chasm below. But after Gandalf uttered his famous last words, "Fly, you fools," the film did not cut to the Fellowship's reactions like in The Fellowship of the Ring . Instead, the camera followed the descent of Gandalf and the Balrog. Gandalf caught his sword, Glamdring , and began hacking away at the fiery monster. They fell for over a minute straight, battling the entire way down. They eventually crashed into a deep, dark pit of water at the very bottom of Moria. At that point, the screen flashed white and transitioned to Frodo in the present day of The Two Towers . He shouted Gandalf's name, having just awoken from a nightmare about his demise.
This flashback scene served several purposes. It recapped a pivotal moment from the previous film, reminding viewers of what happened to Gandalf and why Frodo was in such a poor mental state . It also allowed The Two Towers to begin with a fast-paced action scene to hook the audience as opposed to Frodo and Sam simply trudging through Emyn Muil. But most importantly, it foreshadowed Gandalf's resurrection later in the film . The Fellowship of the Ring led both its audience and its characters to believe that Gandalf's fall from the Bridge of Khazad-dûm was the end of his story, but this flashback indicated that there was more to his seeming death than met the eye. Gandalf would later reveal that he survived the fall and continued to fight the Balrog "from the lowest dungeon to the highest peak." In the end, they both died, but Gandalf came back to life even more powerful than before.
The Confusing History of Gollum's Appearance in The Lord of the Rings
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy defined Gollum's appearance for many fans, but he did not always look like Andy Serkis' version.
- According to the timeline from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novel, Gandalf and the Balrog fought for 10 days.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King opens with a flashback not to an earlier film but to an event from far before the main plot of The Lord of the Rings . It showed the hobbits Sméagol and Déagol fishing on the river Anduin. It was Sméagol's birthday, and the two of them were having a happy, carefree time on the river. While attempting to reel in a particularly strong fish, Déagol fell overboard. At the bottom of the river, he discovered the One Ring, which Isildur had lost there millennia prior. He brought it to the surface, and as soon as Sméagol saw it, he became entranced. He asked Déagol to give it to him as a birthday present, and when he refused, Sméagol attacked him. They fought over the One Ring until Sméagol strangled Déagol to death. The film then showed Sméagol's grotesque transformation into Gollum. Jackson leaned into his horror film background to make the opening as eerie as possible.
This flashback was a terrifying reminder of what could happen to Frodo if he gave in to the corruption of the One Ring. It led the audience to wonder if Frodo and Sam might turn on each other just as Sméagol and Déagol did or if Frodo might transform into a monster like Gollum . Once again, this was foreshadowing, as the combined efforts of the One Ring and Gollum drove a wedge between Frodo and Sam. Unlike Sméagol and Déagol, however, their bond was too strong to be broken. The flashback also gave audiences a greater understanding of Gollum. The earlier films revealed that he was once a hobbit named Sméagol, but they did not show his original form, nor did they indicate that he had murdered a loved one to claim the One Ring. The start of Gollum's downfall highlighted both his pitiable tragedy and his deep depravity, which was the dichotomy that made him such a compelling character.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s Greatest Parts Weren't Created by Tolkien
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power worked hard to adapt the Second Age of Middle-earth, but the original characters helped the show to shine.
- Jackson originally planned the flashback of Sméagol and Déagol to occur near the end of The Two Towers instead of the start of The Return of the King .
The second season of The Rings of Power carried on this trend from Jackson's sequels. The first episode opened with Sauron's coronation as the new Dark Lord at the start of the Second Age. Sauron proclaimed, "I seek a new kind of power, not of the flesh but over flesh." This was the origin of a phrase that both Adar and Celebrimbor used in the first season, which made Galadriel suspicious of Halbrand . Instead of crowning Sauron, Adar flipped the crown over and stabbed him, prompting the Orcs to attack and kill Sauron. But as a Maia, Sauron could not truly die . He turned into black goo that needed to consume other living things -- including a rat, a centipede, and an unfortunate traveler -- to regain strength. Like the Gollum flashback from The Return of the King , this was a slow and disgusting transformation.
Sauron was eventually able to take a humanoid form, shapeshifting into the familiar guise of Halbrand . He met up with some refugees fleeing from an Orc attack. Among them was an old man whose family once served the King of the Southlands, and he wore a necklace bearing the royal crest. Halbrand pretended to befriend him and joined the refugees on their voyage across the sea, presumably to Númenor. When a sea monster attacked and destroyed the ship, the old man asked for help, but Halbrand callously ignored his plea and stole the necklace. This was the same necklace he used in the first season of The Rings of Power to trick Galadriel into believing that he was the King of the Southlands.
Halbrand survived the shipwreck, ending up on the raft upon which Galadriel met him in the first season. The end of the flashback led directly into that scene, which had a more ominous tone given its newfound context. The opening of The Rings of Power 's second season recontextualized Halbrand as a manipulative monster , showing his willingness to let innocent people die or even kill them himself if it served his ends. It also explained the extreme animosity he felt towards Adar in the episode "Udûn." The first season of The Rings of Power could not delve too deeply into Halbrand's backstory or characterization without giving away the fact that he was Sauron, but now that his identity is no longer secret, the second season can give the audience a greater understanding of him and allow viewers to become invested in the future of his story.
