The Tour of Britain 2023 sees a star-studded peloton ride from Altrincham and Manchester on stage one to the route finish at Caerphilly Castle on stage eight, via Wrexham, Sherwood Forest, Southend-on-Sea and much more.

The great Wout van Aert will be on the startline and the Dutch Jumbo-Visma rider, who won this race in 2021, will be one of the biggest draws for cycling fans. He will be joined by talented 21-year-old teammate Olav Kooij in a strong Jumbo line-up.

Ineos Grenadiers provide plenty of home interest, with world and Olympic mountain bike champion Tom Pidcock fronting a team that also includes talented young Spaniard Carlos Rodriguez (fifth at the Tour de France) and Welshman Luke Rowe, riding in his home nation for several of the stages.

Track world champion Ethan Vernon and Tour de Yorkshire stage winner Harry Tanfield will also enjoy home support during the race.

Here is a closer look at the stage one route and road closures.

Road closures

A rolling road closure will be enforced on each of the stages. On stage one there will be several road closures in place around the centre of Altrincham, some of which will be in place from 6pm on Saturday 2 September. This will also lead to parking suspensions in key locations to enable race infrastructure to be set up and following the race removed.

The East Yorkshire stage for the Tour of Britain 2023 cycle race has been revealed, along with the sprint and King of the Mountains climb locations.

Stage 3 of the 2023 Tour of Britain, which will take place on Tuesday, September 5, will start from the pedestrianised area in Boothferry Road, Goole. It will pass through major towns including Howden, Market Weighton, Driffield, Bridlington and Hornsea, before heading to the finish line near the racecourse on Beverley Westwood.

The 153.8km stage will also see over 100 of the world’s leading cyclists, including Olympic, world and Tour de France champions, pass through a number of towns and villages including Foggathorpe, Holme on Spalding Moor, Middleton on the Wolds, North Dalton, Langtoft, Octon, Rudston, Skipsea, Withernwick and Long Riston. There will be two King of the Mountains climbs, located at Towthorpe Lane, near Market Weighton which will be 39km into the stage while the second climb will take place on the B1249 Scarborough Road at Langtoft at 74km.

The sprint section of the race will be at 109km on the B1242 Hornsea Road, Skipsea. This will be the first time that East Yorkshire has played host to an entire stage of the Tour of Britain although the area is no stranger to international cycle races, having previously hosted a number of stage starts in Beverley and Bridlington for recent Tour de Yorkshire events, as well as a UCI para-cycling event in 2019.

The Tour of Britain has become a cornerstone of the UK sporting calendar since its return in 2004 and this year’s event will start in Greater Manchester on Sunday, September 3 and finish in South Wales on Sunday, September 10. Live flag-to-flag coverage of every stage, as well as a daily highlights show, will be broadcast by ITV4 while international coverage will be available in over 150 countries courtesy of Eurosport and GCN+.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding Council, said: “I’m really looking forward to stage three of the Tour of Britain and it’s great to see the route will take in some of our towns and villages that have not been on the route for previous Tour de Yorkshire events. It will be a great day and with the number of visitors who come to the area to watch the race, it’s sure to give the local economy a boost.”

Councillor Nick Coultish, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism at the council, said: “The route will take the cyclists through some of East Yorkshire’s beautiful towns and villages and some stunning countryside which will be broadcast not just to the UK but to audiences across the world. I am quite sure the residents of those towns and villages will come out in force to cheer on the cyclists along with the visitors to East Yorkshire, who are also supporting the race. It promises to be a brilliant day.”

Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain race director said: “Here it is! The whole route for our eagerly anticipated East Riding of Yorkshire stage.

“The race will be showcasing this fantastic part of Britain to a worldwide audience so we knew we had to pack in as much as possible. From the beautiful countryside to the distinctive coastline, it’s going to be a spectacular day.”

An interactive map of the route is due to be released in the coming weeks on the Tour of Britain website , which also includes further details about the race.

Stevie Williams wins Tour of Britain as Matevž Govekar sprints to victory on final stage

Flèche Wallonne champion becomes first British winner of the stage race in eight years

Stevie Williams at the Tour of Britain

Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) became the first Brit since Steve Cummings in 2016 to win the Tour of Britain, securing the overall by 16 seconds ahead of Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL).

After a frantic final day of racing in Suffolk, Matevž Govekar emerged victorious on the streets of Felixstowe in a reduced bunch sprint. The Bahrain Victorious rider led the sprint out from the front and held off the rest of the sprinters behind to take the win.

The race had split early on, as a group of around 30 riders gained separation from the rest of the peloton with many riders including points classification leader Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) caught out. All of the main general classification contenders were present at the front though and their teams worked hard to increase the gap on those behind them.

There were some attempts to go clear late on, with Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) trying three times in the final 25km. However, a move failed to materialise, as he was shut down by the teams in the main group, eventually admitting defeat and settling back into the bunch.

In the final sprint, Rasmus Pedersen (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Development Team) and Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) came closest to challenging Govekar, but they had left it too late to come around the Slovenian rider, who claimed just the third professional victory of his career.

Ethan Vernon was also well-positioned in the finale after his Israel-Premier Tech team had controlled the stage for overall leader Williams. However, after a strong leadout he was unable to fully launch his sprint after failing to find the right gear in the final few hundred metres and he ultimately finished in fourth place.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Matevz Govekar wins stage six of the Tour of Britain

It was a lively start to the final stage of the race as Jacob Scott (REMBE Pro Cycling Team Sauerland), Mathias Bregnhøj (Sabgal-Anicolor), Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) got themselves up the road in a four-man breakaway after some early attacking action.

They were kept in check by the peloton until a split in the main group occurred with around 90km to go. Many of the top teams came to the front in an attempt to take advantage of the situation, which saw the gap to the breakaway come tumbling down.

Many riders had been caught out by the split including points classification leader Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step), who would not see the front of the race again and later abandoned the race after a crash.

The breakaway was caught with around 88km to go, making it a group of around 30 riders at the head of the race, with all of the teams committed to extending their gap on those behind them.

With the gap at well over a minute, a second split then occurred in the chasing with around 52km to go. Those chasers then caught the front of the race not long afterwards as Israel-Premier Tech continued to set the pace as they had done for most of the day.

Many riders then tried their hand at going clear as they entered the final 30km of the stage, with Joseph Blackmore (Israel-Premier Tech) and Connor Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) among those attempting to make a move before Remco Evenepoel launched a flurry of attacks off the front.

The Belgian would get a small gap on his first attempt, but was quickly shut down by Jake Stewart (Israel-Premier Tech) on every occasion, as he worked hard to keep things under control for his teammate Stevie Williams.

With 10km to go and all of the attacks nullified, it was clear that the stage was going to finish in a sprint and the teams began to organise themselves at the front of the main group.

Going into the final kilometre, Uno-X Mobility had moved themselves up to the front, with Israel-Premier Tech and Bahrain Victorious also up towards the front as the teams looked to stay organised through the final few corners.

As they entered the final few hundred metres of the stage, Stewart began his final leadout for Ethan Vernon, but the British rider was unable to properly launch his sprint as Matevž Govekar then emerged from behind and began to power towards the line.

The Bahrain Victorious rider was challenged by Rasmus Pedersen and Ben Swift, who were coming up quickly, but the line arrived just in time for the Slovenian who took the biggest win of his career after finishing fourth and fifth on the previous two stages.

Williams finished safely in the bunch to seal the overall victory and Vernon’s fourth place finish along with Magnier’s abandonment saw him secure the points classification for Israel-Premier Tech, who also won the teams classification.

The youth classification went to Onley, who finished second overall in the general classification, whilst the mountains classification went to one of the breakout stars of this year’s Tour of Britain, Callum Thornley (Trinity Racing).

Pastor, state police chaplain killed in motorcycle crash on Route 9 in Berlin

Published september 19, 2024 • updated on september 19, 2024 at 6:11 pm.

A pastor and chaplain for state police as well as other local departments was killed in a motorcycle crash on Route 9 in Berlin on Wednesday afternoon, according to state police.

State police said Pastor Paul David Krampitz, 65, of Cromwell, was driving a Harley-Davidson in the left lane on Route 9 North around 4:14 p.m. near exit 33 when a Chevrolet Impala struck him and he was thrown from his motorcycle.

Krampitz was taken to New Britain Hospital, where he died, state police said.

Dr. Reverend Paul Krampitz was the Connecticut State Police Chaplain, pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church and a husband and a father.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Connecticut State Police announces the passing of Dr. Reverend Paul Krampitz, a Connecticut State Police Chaplain,” the Connecticut State Police said in a statement.

He was a state police chaplain for 16 years and supported state police through some of their toughest times, including after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown.

Krampitz was appointed as a CT State Police Chaplain on July 3, 2008, by Commissioner John A. Danaher III.

He was assigned to Troop L (Litchfield), H (Hartford), and DESPP Headquarters in Middletown.

“Chaplain Krampitz touched the lives of hundreds of troopers, dispatchers, and support staff in his 16 years of service,” state police said in a statement.

“Chaplain Krampitz was a pillar to our agency following the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and navigated our agency through dozens of Critical Incident Stress Management debriefings. Often sought after by Troopers, Command Staff, and Chaplains for spiritual support, counsel, mentorship, and guidance; Chaplain Krampitz was a reputable and respected member of our agency,” the statement goes on to say.

Krampitz also served as a chaplain for Luther Ridge of Middletown and the Cromwell police and fire Departments.

“Pastor Paul was an extraordinary man who was one of our biggest supporters and friends. He was a light in the darkest of times and we will forever hold him in our hearts. We are honored to have had him lead us through our darkest of moments and extend our deepest condolences to Pastor Paul's family, friends, parishioners, fellow motorcycle club members, and all those that were lucky enough to know him,” Cromwell police posted on Facebook.

“Something Pastor Paul always reminded us, even though you may be walking through the valley of the shadow of death, you are ‘walking through’ and will come out the other side,” the Cromwell police department’s social media post says. “We will feel you with us always.”

The Cromwell Fire Department said Chaplain Paul Krampitz was a cherished member of the fire department family.

“Chaplain Krampitz served our department with unwavering dedication, compassion, and a spirit of service that touched the lives of many,” the fire department said in a statement.

They said he joined the fire department many years ago and quickly became a vital resource for firefighters, their families and the fire department community.

“Chaplain Krampitz was more than just a chaplain; he was a friend, a mentor, and a source of strength for all of us. Chaplain Krampitz was not only dedicated to the fire department, but was also an active member of the community, often participating in local events and assisting with outreach programs. His passion for helping others and his deep faith inspired us daily. We are heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” the Cromwell Fire Department statement says.

He was also a member of the Cheshire police department for a few years.

"Although Paul Krampitz was only a member of the Cheshire Police Department for a few years, first as a dispatcher and then as an officer, the Cheshire Police Department would like to offer our condolences to the Krampitz Family," Cheshire police said in a statement.

Pastor Krampitz was a graduate of Yale Divinity School and Hartford Seminary, where he received his Doctor of Ministry degree. State police said he also completed a year of study at the Lutheran School of Theology at Philadelphia.

Before serving the congregation of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell, he served other congregations in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

He was also a past dean of the Southern CT and Central CT Conferences and served on the New England Synod Council and Candidacy Committee.

“Paul was almost everywhere at all times such a charismatic person, lovable and energetic," TFC Rodney Valdes said.

State police said Chaplain Krampitz is survived by his wife Paula; their three children Zoë, Zaidan and Zachary; and two adult daughters, Christina and Maria.

“When I came on, he was a great mentor to me, welcomed me with open arms to the agency,” Jeffery Gallagher, Connecticut State Police chaplain, said. “I don’t know if he slept between his work at the church, his volunteer work, the motorcycle group he was a part of, the band he played in, I would joke with him when I saw him, I don’t know how he did it.”

Trish Buchanan, of South Windsor, knew Krampitz personally, and he responded to East Hartford police when her husband, who's an officer with East Hartford, died by suicide.

“I don’t know how he did it all, and yet had time for everyone in the community, especially law enforcement," Buchanan said. “If my husband had known, or I had known about Paul Krampitz, he would be alive here today…I believe that truly in my heart.”

The highway was closed for several hours on Wednesday afternoon.

State police said the investigation is active and the other operator involved in the crash has been identified and is cooperating with troopers. The other driver refused medical treatment.

Tour of Britain 2023 Route stage 6: Southend-on-Sea - Harlow

The riders clip into their pedals on Southend’s Western Esplanade, close to the pier, before the first 65 kilometres loop around the towns of Rochford, South Woodham Ferrers and Burnham-on-Crouch. The route continues in westerly direction just before Bradwell-on Sea.

Along the way to Harlow there is only one KOM climb to be overcome. It’s the 3rd category slope just past West-Hanningfield, Ship Road, merely 1.4 kilometres at 2.4% and tackled with 46 kilometres left to race. The rest of the route is gently undulating.
