Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

Is tipping customary in India?

While traveling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travelers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my cell phone while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your cell phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travelers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

It has a diverse culture, and includes the Hindu pilgrimage centers of Char Dham, Haridwar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Allahabad, Vaishno Devi and Pushkar, the Buddhist pilgrimage centers of Sarnath and Kushinagar, the Sikh Golden Temple as well as world heritage sites such as the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Khajuraho temples, Hill Forts of Rajasthan etc.

South India is the area encompassing the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana as well as the union territories of Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.

The geography of the region is diverse with two mountain ranges - the Western and Eastern Ghats, bordering the plateau heartland. Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Tungabhadra and Vaigai rivers are important non-perennial sources of water. Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore and Kochi are the largest urban areas.

The Kingdom of Nepal is an extravaganza of culture, heritage and natural Himalayan beauty. Despite being a small country, Nepal offers a variety of experiences such as trekking in the hilly terrains of Himalayan ranges, walking around villages and small towns and mixing with the tribes of the region, boating in serene lakes, visiting Hindu and Buddhist temples, experiencing an elephant back safari and enjoying scenic flights over Mount Everest.

Bhutan, the serene mountain kingdom, untouched by modernity, still retains its old world charm. Opened to tourists in 1974, Bhutan is an ancient land, rich in Buddhist culture, where Buddhism overpowers every aspect of routine life, art and traditions. Dotted with ancient monasteries, temples and stupas, Bhutan lies in the ranges of eastern Himalayas bordered by Tibet on the north and India on the south.

Sri Lanka, the tea country island, is rich in cultural, archaeological and natural treasures. Offering ample of colonial history, Sri Lanka is a land of diversity with its towering Buddhas, ancient cities and towns, green carpeted hill resorts, national wildlife parks, tea plantations, scenic golf courses and beautiful beaches.

Maldives are a cluster of 1,190 emerald islands with dazzling green centre of palm trees fringed with white sand and bordered by the clear turquoise Indian Ocean. The airport, Male, is located centrally between the islands, and a speed boat or sea plane is used for airport to hotel transfers. Parvez Khan of Indian Journey is a talented tour organizer and thoughtful human being. Parvez arranged a five-person, 24-day trip that included Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi, and Kerala that was utterly delightful and seamless. Despite his smiling presence and calm demeanor, I knew he worked hard behind the scenes to handle every detail to make sure everything went smoothly.

Two couples and long time friends booked a trip starting in Goa, driving to Hampi, then flying to Madurai. We again had a driver and explored world heritage sites from Kancheepuram to the backwaters of Kerala. Hotels were excellent and importantly so were our driver who were experienced and spoke good English. Our agent was always available by phone and always helpful the few times needed. Trip could not have been better. Recommend without reservation.

From 2014 to 2018 I’ve done 3 tour in India Rajasthan, South India, Varanasi, Amritsar, and I’m going to have the fourth. I like India and I’m strictly joint with this country. I went in contact with Parvez and Indian Journey in a wonderful period I was in India to adopt my daughter and since then Parvez-Bahi was for me not only the best travel agent ever known but over all he was a brother an angel who protected me and my family and friends, in India.

We used Indian Journey this month for a Golden Triangle itinerary. Without a doubt, every driver, guide, and representative were top notch and immediately available via text, phone, or Whataspp (preferred).

Not once did we feel out of touch nor left questioning our itinerary. The guides were able to be a bit flexible with personal goals and priorities.

Excellent staff, prompt communication, flexibility, and guides. Just beware of the hard sell at the Cottage Industries mandatory handicraft/carpet shops.

Our third trip with Indian Journey was as memorable as ever. We have previously used Parvez (INDIAN JOURNEY) for touring Rajasthan and then a year later Amritsar, Shimla & Manali. All hotel bookings were good , Pawan our Driver was superb (we had him for 15 days in this last road trip). I have yet to come across a more decent and polite travel organisation in India, where the emphasis is on service and well being of the customer with very good prices.

This trip we did this time was Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and finally Udaipur. We stayed 2 nights at each location.

I would have no hesitation to recommend (and I have already sent a number of my friends in the UK Parvez’s details) INDIAN JOURNEY for organizing your next holiday.

If you want home away from home than you should get in touch with Indian Journey Mr Parvez Khan. I have used other service providers in India on my previous visits but no one came close to Indian Journey when it comes to your comfort and service. You will be treated as a family member of Indian Journey.

I have visited lots of places and the best thing is that as soon as you reach your Hotel to check in you will receive a call from Indian Journey to ask if the Hotel is to your liking and if not they arrange to transfer you to another Hotel with fulfills your needs and wants. I have visited India more than five times with young family and solo.There is no comparison in service and comfort with Indian Journey. Don’t just take my word for it, try it and you will not be disappointed.

I cannot recommend the Zicasso travel partner enough! Our tour operator made the whole process easy and a once-in-a-lifetime experience affordable. Delhi, the airports, and Varanasi would have been challenging to navigate without the expert guides who made person-to-person handoffs from the minute we stepped off the plane. Our kids (older teens) were very jet lagged and not feeling well the first few days (the pollution is significant), so we needed some itinerary adjustments. These were quick and seamless, and our travel agent was even able to swap days/activities on the fly. Everyone was so accommodating; we really appreciated it. We always felt safe and enjoyed truly authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences, such as spiritual Varanasi’s Ganges River ceremonies and the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan.

When we first started planning our trip, we were unsure as to what to expect. We asked Zicasso for recommendations on a travel agent for Rajasthan, India. We were contacted by the trip planner of this travel company. After taking time to discuss what we might expect to see, our planner recommended an itinerary that would allow us to sample a cross-section of Rajasthan as well as learn some of the history and culture. He suggested that we visit during Diwali, a fantastic experience, and that the end of October and early November would be ideal weather-wise, which it was. Our itinerary included exploring New Delhi, seeing the Taj Mahal, visiting multiple cities, riding camels and elephants, staying in luxurious hotels, tents in Jaisalmer desert (we stayed in a Camp Relais & Chateaux, an indescribable, wow experience), and a repurposed feudal lord's home which offered character and flavor galore. We were accompanied by one guide, an exceptional, articulate young man, and mostly one driver, and this constancy made the trip much smoother. The trip planner tries to pair personalities, and he did a great job here, which clearly points out the personal attention we received. Our trip ended with dinner at the planner's home, with his wife and sister-in-law graciously cooking a wonderful Indian meal for us. It was a very special evening for which we are grateful. We strongly recommend the trip planner and this travel company. Start with their website and contact them for ideas if you are on your way to India.

We had a very interesting 18-day trip to Laos and Vietnam in February. We worked closely with our Zicasso tour operator to plan a customized trip that included a number of stops and different experiences. We started in Laos, with the monasteries, waterfall/hiking, cooking classes in Luang Prabang, and outdoor activities in beautiful Vang Vieng (hiking, caving, and kayaking). We spent the next 13 days in Vietnam – chaotic Hanoi; beautiful Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, with the fantastic limestone karsts; historic Hue, the Imperial City; picturesque Hoi An, with the serene and spectacular resort; ending up in Saigon for a day. We had three knowledgeable guides with different personalities and backgrounds – Laos, northern Vietnam, and central Vietnam. We had interesting and detailed discussions which enhanced our understanding of the history of the region, as well as the US impact on Laos and Vietnam. Although we liked our guides, we realized they were independent contractors and did not really have any input in our day-to-day itinerary (which did have changes from the original). Although most of the changes were fine, we would have liked better communication – letting us know about the changes and options. As a result, we spent more time managing each day's itinerary with our guides to ensure we liked the next day's itinerary. In summary, we truly liked and enjoyed our well-planned trip.

This year my vacation I had decided to spend in Indian Himalayas. Looking for the local travel agency, I found Shikhar Travels. And that was the best choice indeed. First we started from the trekking: Mt. Stok Kangri 6153, and then moved to reach our final goal: Mt. Nun 7135 Amazing time with the best service I could imagine. Hello, my husband and I were in India in March 2019. We asked Shikhar Travels for personal trip on the south India. We walked Bangalore-Mysore-Hassan-Hampi-Badami-Hubli and Goa. Everything was perfect. Agency care about us like queen and king. We are from Slovakia and don´t speak english. Some situations were funny. Their service was brilliant. Our driver, hotels, guides, food... perfect! People are very kindly, helpful. We hope, we will back for years and again with Shikhar. Recomend!

The traffic in India has to be witnessed to be believed! All traffic, most of the time requires experience ++ to negotiate. You will really need an Indian driver who has the patience and expertise to get you there safely. Our driver picked us up from our accommodation and took us to Agra for Taj Mahal visit and several times to Delhi airport and back for domestic travel. All drivers from Shikhar courteous, good English and generally lovely people. Would definitely use Shikhar again.

I am very impressed with the service provided by Shikhar travel, first of all very quick response by emails made it easy to communicate for arranging the trip beforehand and it was well prepared all through the trip. Even when some trouble happens they tried to do their best to solve. It was my first time to work with them and now I have trust after working with them. When this country gained independence in 1947, the new democracy chose nonalignment, set up a large national government, and legislated protectionist policies that kept out most foreign products and led almost too economic isolation. The first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, believed protection-ism would make India self-reliant and ultimately improve the standard of living, especially for the impoverished. India did move toward self-reliance, but lack of competition stifled the country's own development, with its captive market forced to accept indigenous products that were often substandard or old-fashioned. Until recently, the dominant car on India's roads was a copy of the Ambassador, a British design from the early 1950s with a curvaceous yet bulky chassis: a nostalgic gas-guzzler.
