ITQ Lanka “Legends” emerged as the new winner at the 19th edition of the Travel Trade Sports Club (TTSC) Bowling Championships 2022 concluded at the Excel World “Strikes” Cosmic Bowling center on Saturday, 26 November. The tournament participated by 45 teams from 26 TTSC Member Firms was sponsored by Walkers Tours. In the first round, the 45 teams (each team, comprising 03 players) bowled a round each (45 matches) & at the completion, the top scoring 20 teams advanced to the 02nd round; After the 02nd round (20 matches), the following top scoring 10 teams entered the final round. The 10 finalists were Aitken Spence Travels “A”(315), Exotic Holidays International “B” (354), Jetwing Travels “C” (299), Acorn Group (308), Holiday Plan DMC (302) ,Connaissance de Ceylan (341), ITQ Lanka “Legends” (320), Aitken Spence Travels “B” (324), Classic Travels (311), Walkers Tours “Rollers” (352) Final Standings: Jetwing Travels “C” (272), Connaissance de Ceylan (275), Classic Travel (277), Acorn Group (314), Holiday Plan DMC (319), Aitken Spence Travels “B” (334), Walkers Tours “Rollers” (351). Bronze winner: Aitken Spence Travels “A” (360); Lalin Samarasinghe (116), Sasindu Welarathna (121), Sameera Jansen (123) Silver winner: Exotic Holidays International “B” (372); Umesh Anushanka (94), Hasitha Hettiarachchi (168), Rizwan Mannan (110) Gold Winner: ITQ Lanka “Legends” (405); Adrian Musafer (127), Kanchana Malluwawadu (125), Mark Bastian (153). Anil Hapugoda heads Travel Trade Sports Club
Anil Sharmal Hapugoda from Aitken Spence Travels PLC. was unanimously elected as the 22nd President of the Travel Trade Sports Club (inaugurated in 1976) at the 46th Annual General Meeting held recently, at the Ramada Colombo, Liberty Ball room.
Hapugoda takes over from Bonita Odayar from Amadeus Lanka after her extended four year stint as the President. (2018 to 2022). The 54 year Old Thomian, Cricketer, Soccerite, Boxer and a cadet is the Vice President, Aitken Spence Travels.Anil Hapugoda joined the TTSC representing Aitken Spence Travels in 2006.
So far, Aitken Spence Group has produced4 TTSC Presidents, including himself his predecessors being Kumar Mather (1980/82), Keethi Jayaweera (2004/06) and Prasanjit Perera (2006/08)
The new faces in the Committee are :Amri Noordeen from Deithlem Travels, Shihara Wimalaratne from George Steuart Travels.Shane Halock from Kingsbury Hotel .Viroshana Herath from Emirates, Yohan Seneviratne from Sri Lankan Airlines & Tharindu Perera from Ramada Colombo.

Sri Lanka Airlines retain Travel Trade Futsal Soccer title
Sri Lankan Airlines retained the Travel Trade Sports Club, five-a-side, Futsal Soccer title for the second year running, when they beat Cinnamon Grand Colombo “A” by a goal to nil, at its third edition, sponsored by Yenesha Travels, concluded recently at Club Fusion Indoor Sports Arena, Boralesgamuwa.
12 teams in four groups participated and at the completion of the round robin, the two top teams of each group advanced to the knock-out round.
The awards were given away by the TTSC Officials, President, Anil Hapugoda, Senior VP, Mani Sugathapala, Adrian Jansz, Shavinda Jinadasa, Amri Noordeen and Viroshana Herath. (BM)
Quarter-Finals: Acom Group beat Cinnamon Grand Colombo “B” 1-nil; Cinnamon Grand Colombo “A” beat Cinnamon Hotels, 2-1; Sri Lankan Airlines beat Walkers Tours, 7-nil; Waters Edge beat Metro Travels 2-1, Semi-Finals; Sri Lankan Airlines beat Acom Group on penalties, 2-1 as the match ended in a 1-all draw; Cinnamon Grand Colombo “A” beat Waters Edge on penalties, 4-3, as the match ended in a 2 - all draw, Play- off for 3rd place; Waters Edge beat Acom Group, 2-1, Final; Sri Lankan Airlines beat Cinnamon Grand Colombo “A” , 1-nil.

Travel Trade Cricket Sixes on July 7
The most popular event in the Travel Trade Sports Club (TTSC) multi-sport events calendar, the TTSC Men’s and Women’s Softball Cricket “Sixes” 2024, gets back on track after a lapse of four years, on Sunday 7 July at the Shalika Grounds, Narahenpita.
The 43rd edition of the tournament is sponsored by Aitken Spence Travels for the 19th year.
In the previous tournament held on 24 November 2019 at the Steel Corporation Grounds, Athurugiriya, where 42 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams participated, Blue Water, Wadduwa won the men’s title, beating Sri Lankan Airlines and Amaya Lake, Dambulla won the women’s title, beating Cinnamon Grand, Colombo.
Entries have been invited from the 180 strong TTSC membership and will close on 28 June with Gayani Karunaratne, C/O Aitken Spence Travels, 315, 4th Floor, Vauxhall Street, Colombo 2.

The Fourth Travel Trade Sports Club “Futsal” five-a-side Soccer Championships 2024, sponsored by Infinity Vacations and Butterfly Vacations will be held on Sunday, June 2, at the Club Fusion Sports Arena, Boralesgamuwa, commencing at 8.30 am.
Entries have been invited from the 180 strong TTSC membership and will close on May 29 with Gayani Karunaratne, C/o Aitken Spence Travels, 04th Floor, Vauxall Tower II, Vauxall Street, Colombo 2.
At the previous tournament held in 2023 at the same venue where 12 teams participated, Sri Lankan Airlines retained the title beating Cinnamon Grand, Colombo.

Double Victory for SriLankan Airlines at Travel Trade Sports Club Carrom Championship

SriLankan Airlines clinched a double victory at the recent Travel Trade Sports Club - 10th Carrom Championship 2024, where Sri Lanka’s top travel trade companies squared-off in rounds of carrom.
Men's Team A of SriLankan Airlines came on top in the finals, with team member G S N Senadeera winning the Tournament Best Player title, while Men’s Team B became the runners-up.
Not to be outdone, Women’s Team C of SriLankan Airlines also emerged Champions in the women's double title at the event.

MLH shines at Travel Trade Sports Club events
Mount Lavinia Hotel (MLH) displayed their sports excellence at the Travel Trade Sports Club Swimming Championships 2013. M A B P Kumara of the Security Department department won Silver Medals in the age 40–49 men’s category for 25m Breast Stroke and 25m Back Stroke while K Shelton Perera, also from the Security Department bagged Bronze Medals in 25m Butterfly Stroke and 25m Free Style events of the same category.
The MLH team were Runners-up in the Plate Division and the team comprised of J C Henagama, W A Sandun, G D S R Manohara and K Y B Ukwatta from F&B, R A Edirimuni and G D Upananda from the Event Desk and T S M Galiph from the Revenue Department.

24th Annual Travel Trade Sports Club Badminton Championship
On May 12, 2024, the 24th annual Travel Trade Sports Club Badminton Championship took place at the St. Joseph’s College Sports Complex in Colombo 10. This event, sponsored by Walkers Tours, saw enthusiastic participation from various teams, including skilled players from Walkers Tours.
The tournament featured multiple categories, with Walkers Tours competing in both the open and veteran categories. The competition was fierce, with numerous teams showcasing their talents and striving for victory.
Despite the tough matches, the Walkers Tours team performed admirably: – Open Category: The Walkers Tours team emerged as the 2nd runners-up, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament. – Veteran Category: Similarly, the veteran team from Walkers Tours also secured the 2nd runners-up position, highlighting their experience and strategic gameplay.
In both the open and veteran categories, the Sri Lankan Airlines Team proved to be the dominant force, clinching the winner’s title in both divisions. Their consistent performance and outstanding skills set them apart from the competition.
The 24th annual Travel Trade Sports Club Badminton Championship was a resounding success, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among the participants. Walkers Tours’ commendable performance, securing 2nd runners-up positions in both the open and veteran categories, is a testament to their dedication and hard work. The event not only highlighted the competitive nature of the sport but also brought together teams in a celebration of badminton and athletic excellence.

Chief Executive Officer
Malinga has 24 years of experience in investment management, corporate finance, business strategy and general management. He was with the Hemas Group for 16 years until March 2020. During his last four years at Hemas, he worked in the capacity of Managing Director of the Leisure Travel & Aviation Group, and in the capacity of the Group CFO during the preceding nine years. He was also a Board Member of Hemas Holdings PLC for over six years and the Serendib Hotels Group for over 13 years, until March 2020. He is a CFA Charter Holder and a Past President of CFA Sri Lanka. He is also a Fellow Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK and a Past Board Member of the CIMA Sri Lanka Division. He holds a BSc in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, an MSc in Investment Management from Cass Business School, and an Executive MBA from INSEAD.
Harith Perera
Executive Vice President – Hotel & Villa Management
Harith has a wealth of experience in Sales, Marketing, Branding and Finance. Having joined Hemas FMCG in 1997 he was subsequently part of the team launching Diethelm Travel in Sri Lanka & Maldives in 2006 where he functioned as the Managing Director until 2018. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK and has an MBA from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Harith is the immediate Past President of Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) and a former Board member of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau (SLTPB). He is also a founder member of the Tourism Alliance of Sri Lanka.
Dushy Jayaweera
Executive Vice President – Aviation Services
Dushy Jayaweera has over 38 years in the Aviation Industry and leads the Aviation Cluster of the Group which represents both on-line and off-line airlines. Having joined Hemas Air Services 1994, she has played a key role in the formation of the Aviation Centre and expanding the business overseas by setting up the two regional offices in Thailand and the Maldives. She is also the Managing Director of Aviation Services (Pvt) Ltd in the Maldives and a Director of LTU Asia Aviation Services Ltd, Thailand. Dushy has played a key role in all Industry related Associations and is a Past President of the Sri Lanka Association of Airline Representatives, Skål International Colombo, the Sri Lanka-Malaysia Business Council and the Travel Trade Sports Club of Sri Lanka. She is currently a Director of the Skal Asian Area overlooking Membership Development and an Executive Committee member of the Sri Lanka – Italy Business Council.
Suranjith De Fonseka
Executive Vice President – Inbound Travel
Having previously played a key role in Sales and Marketing at Serendib Leisure Hotels and Hemas LTA sector, Suranjith currently leads Diethelm Travel Sri Lanka & Maldives teams. He holds a B.A. with Honors in Business Administration from Nottingham Trent University (UK), has an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and is a Chartered Marketer. Suranjith also participated in executive education programs at INSEAD, Cornell Nanyang University and the Indian School of Business. He is a committee member of the Travel Trade Sports Club and a member of Skål International Colombo.
Nimali Welikala
Executive Vice President - Cheif People Officer
Nimali is a seasoned HR practitioner with experience in building business-relevant HR practices that drive impactful outcomes. She has extensive knowledge in managing organizational change, addressing internal structure issues, and improving productivity and effectiveness. Having worked in the apparel manufacturing, banking, IT sectors, FMCG, Leisure, Travel, and Aviation industries, she is currently the Chief People Officer at Acorn Group.
She is the winner of the National Young HR Minds Award in 2009 for her submission in ‘Global Financial Crisis and the role of Human Resources.’

Gyan Amerasinghe

Gyan with over four decades of experience in the travel and airline business leads the Business Development initiatives at Acorn Group.
He joined Qatar Airways as Country Manager in 2001 responsible for Sri Lanka, Maldives & Nepal. Gyan joined SriLankan Airlines in 2007 based in Hong Kong covering Southern China, The Philippines &Taiwan. He later moved to Italy looking after the commercial operations for SriLankan airlines in Rome & Milan
He had two stints with general sales agency (GSA) of Emirates Airline in Sri Lanka from 1987-2001 and from 2014-2022 holding various positions and finally heading the GSA as its Director/General Manager.

Sudath Rajakaruna
General manager – operations.
Sudath joined Columbus Tours in 1993 and has been part and parcel of the team since the company’s inception. With vast experience of our island’s layout, Sudath heads our Operations department, working closely with our team of chauffeur guides, and liaising with our travelers from start to finish of each trip, ensuring every trip flow perfectly.
Nadine Perera
General manager – sales & marketing.
Nadine heads our sales and marketing team and shares two decades of experience in inbound travel planning in Columbus. Born and raised in Colombo, the mum of two boys, an adventurer and adrenalin junkie at heart, she loves discovering new places with her family, be it locally or internationally.
Vindya Bartholameusz
Senior manager – sales and marketing.
A champion basketball player in her youth, Vindya is CIMA qualified and taught math and English, prior to switching gears to join the travel trade. Her father is in the hotel trade, and it was his career that inspired Vindya to become a travel consultant. She plays the guitar in her free time, and still represents her school (Good Shepherd’s Convent Colombo – Past Pupil’s Association) in basketball. Her favorite place in the world, is her own home.
Champika Paththinige

Champika Paththinige is responsible for all the IT infrastructure as IT Manager at Columbus Tours. Education highlights from University of Colombo, Microsoft & CISCO with more than twenty years’ experience in IT industry. More enthusiastic of open source software’s & favorite part of Sri Lanka is Ella.
Goshan Colombathantrige
Manager – sales & operations.
Goshan brings to Columbus Tours nearly a decade in handling luxury travel across the Asian/European/ British markets. His background lies in IT, E-Marketing, Web Development, and Tourism is his passion especially eco-tourism. He is an archery and bowling champion for Travel Trade Sports Club & avid gamer in his free time. His favorite part of Sri Lanka is Haputale in the tea country. And also he is an active member of SLAITO (Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators).
Nirmal Soysa
Manager – outbound.
Nirmal heads our outbound ticketing department, and currently lives in the little known yet historic town of Nittambuwa, the home town of Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranayake and the world’s first lady Prime Minister Sirimawo Bandaranayake. A father of two, Nirmal spends his free time watching documentaries related to cooking and travel.
Esther Goonatilleke
Manager – sales and marketing.
Esther has been with Colombus for 10 years. Travel planning is where her passion lies. Prior to joining us, she worked in packaging and CIM qualified. Esther is a seasoned travel consultant and loves the travel industry for presenting her new challenges every day. She’s always on the hunt for fresh experiences to share with travelers. She lives in Mount Lavinia, is an avid animal lover and the last to leave the office!
Pulasthi Wattegama
Assistant manager – sales and marketing.
Pulasthi is a native Kandyan – he studied and grew up in the ancient citadel and is passionate about travel. Pulasthi has worked in travel since 2013 and has worked with adventure and camp operators for year, hence his love of scouting new treks and secret camp sites in Sri Lanka.
Iromi Suares
Assistant manager – outbound.
Iromi comes from the seaside town of Panadura, just outside Colombo. She’s a mum of one, and loves to travel. Friendly and helpful, Iromi brings a wealth of experience in outbound ticketing. Prior to working at Columbus Tours, she spent some time in the UK and Norway. Her favorite part of the country is Diyathawala in the tea country.
Shasika Madurangi
Shashika is our resident Maldives expert and a specialist in handling upmarket UK and USA travelers. Whether it’s a short weekend getaway, or a long and restful break, or an immersive experience with the best diving schools, Shashika has all the details to put together the most magical stay in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Her favorite destination in Sri Lanka is the Galle Fort.
Lasith Habaragamuge
Senior executive – reservations & ticketing.
Always friendly and helpful, Lasith is among our most senior staff at Columbus Tours, having joined us straight after he left school. Lasith comes from Gampaha and is not, in fact, a part time model! He’s very much married and lives an active life playing volleyball and cricket in his spare time. His favorite part of the country is the hill country, particularly Kandy and Badulla.
Angelica Jayasinghe
Angelica is part of our Inbound / Outbound ticketing team and is an avid dog lover. She is the proud owner of two pugs and a street pooch, and is always up for an adventure! In her free time she enjoys Latin American dance, a good read, and anywhere along the coast!
Sahan Kommalage
Senior executive – sales and marketing.
Sahan hails from Katunayake, near the west coast beach resort town of Negombo. Prior to his career in travel, Sahan was a banker. He says the switch was spontaneous! He’s a dog trainer and loves the south coast surf town of Hikkaduwa.
Sanjeewa Dias
Senior executive – operations.
Sanjeewa is Colombo born and bred, and is the center of Columbus operations. He ensures everything runs smoothly for our guests from the moment they arrive with a warm meet-and-greet ‘til their departure. He’s also one half of our creative and media team, and he loves cricket.
Buddhini Dias
Buddhini’s background is in Accounting & IT – she’s just completed a degree at SLIIT and is part of our dynamic IT. She’s also a carom champion! Her favorite part of the island is Kandy, between the cultural triangle and the tea country.
Johan Wickramasinghe
Colombo born and raised, Jo captained his school’s (St. Peter’s College) football team, and made it as far as the Sri Lanka National Squad. Prior to joining Columbus Tours, Jo was a banker but said his love of the outdoors and active lifestyle drew him to travel planning. He’s always looking out for new experiences and his favorite campsite in Sri Lanka is Meemure.
Avishka Shaminda

Avishka, hailing from the vibrant city of Colombo, brings a unique blend of skills and passions to the table. With a degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, specializing in Event Management, he is bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise in his field. His journey in this dynamic industry has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence, a keen eye for detail, and an unwavering commitment to exceeding client expectations.
Shenal Weerawardhana
Shenal, from Kalutara, combines IT skills with aspirations. With a Diploma in IT from the University of Moratuwa and currently pursuing a BSc (Hons) in IT, specializing in Interactive Media from SLIIT, he is dedicated to learning in the tech field. Certified in negotiation from the University of Michigan and language skills from the University of Pennsylvania, his expertise includes cybersecurity and Azure SQL. Beyond tech, he finds inspiration in travel, exploring diverse cultures and fostering global connections through his experiences and design endeavors.
