Trek 3900, first month thoughts

I bought a Trek 3900 disc a month ago and thought I'd post some thoughts on it. A little background: I haven't ridden a bike since owning a Muddy Fox Pathfinder about 20 years ago but wanted to start riding local trails. I did a ton of research online and looked at everything available at my LBSs. A deal came along on a used Trek Cobia but that didn't work out so it was down to a Specialized Hardrock 29 or a Trek 3900, based on the drive train spec and the price difference I bought the Trek. Since getting it I've done 112 miles on it of which 62 where on the trails. I don't know enough nor have I ridden enough bikes to offer any form of comparative review but I do think what I learned may help people who are still deciding what to buy, I would really like to have known then what I know now about this bike and feel it would have changed my decision. Drive train Works reasonably well (again I don't have much to compare it to) after the first proper muddy ride and cleaning it started to ghost shift and wouldn't select certain gears on the downshift. A lot of adjust and it's now working properly. The front derailuer rubs the chain and needed quite a lot of adjustment to get it near right. Shifters They are integrated with the brake lever so upgrading the brakes to hydraulics (more on brakes further down) means changing the shifters. Other than that they change gears without issue. Fork Suntour XCT. Where to start, I dislike it, from the little sticker that says "leisure use only" to the adjustment knobs that don't seem to do anything. There is no form or dampening and once compressed violently springs back to full extension. Brakes Tektro Mechanical. The brakes are not very confidence inspiring. I spent time adjusting them properly so the calipers were centred and the pads had correct gap but as soon as I put weight on the bike they started rubbing. They seem to need adjustment after every ride and are very on/off which makes any form of decent worrying. I am thinking of upgrading to Avid BB7s as hydraulics are not an option right now because of the integrated shifters. Wheels and Tyres The bike came with Bontrager LT3 tyres which are described as "light trail". The reviews on this site echo my experience, they slip and don't turn very well. I'm going to get a pair of Maxxis Ardents and see. The rims are single walled which hasn't been an issue for me yet. Pedals Not very grippy, need to be upgraded. Handlebars Narrow and very upright, I prefer the flat bars that I saw on the Hardrock and will properly replace them with something like that. Fit I'm 6'1" and and bike is a 21". The fit is good although the riding position is very upright which is true of all 3 series Treks. I haven't suffered any pains so the fit is obviously right. Overall Overall the bike feels solid and well built, it creaks a little (I think from the seat post) but that could be because I'm 200lbs. It's a solid bike for the money but I don't think it is ideally suited to what I want to do with it. Looking back I think I should have spent a little more and got a better fork and hydraulic brakes. I had considered an Airborne Guardian but could not wait for it (I don't live in the US) and maybe should have bought the 4500 instead or a Rockhopper. I hope my comments don't come across as overly negative, I do like the bike once I get on the trails but know I want a better bike. I had considered upgrading this one but don't think it makes sense. What I'm not sure is if I want a 26FS or a 29HT. For know I'm going to change the tyres, put on some proper pedals and ride the hell out of it. Hopefully time in the saddle will help me decide between another hardtail or an FS. Just for the hell of it here are some options I'm considering: Airborne Guardian Sette Derro 2.0 2011 Trek EX5 (the dealer may trade back the 3900) Upgrading this one over time and then getting a different frame with a longer top tube.

Yeah, wow. This is really great. I'm looking at 3 series treks at my LBSs. I like the weight (lighter than HR (hardrock)) but, if the 3900 has that goin on... maybe I should start somewhere a little higher? Thanks again for a very detailed and informative review.  

The old adage is "You get what you pay for", but truly, go enjoy the bike for a while. No matter which of those bikes you listed, you'll soon get a serious case of "upgradeitis".  

true on that i got a 3700 changed the forks to recon silver,carbon bars,tires to slant six front and racing ralph rear,and the pedals to forte platforms.  

I changed the tyres to a pair of Maxxis Ardent 2.25. Some of the feeling may be in my mind but if feels like a different bike. I corners better, hasn't washed out since the change and I feel faster.

34 Years Later, Star Trek's Most Disappointing TNG Character Exit Still Hurts

Wesley Crusher may not have been the most popular one on Star Trek: The Next Generation , but I wish he would have stuck around longer. Centering on Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise-D, TNG introduced an incredible cast of characters who came to feel like family. While I agree with the general consensus that Star Trek: TNG's first season is the show's weakest, a lot about the series worked from the very beginning, including most of its characters.

Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher was the youngest main cast member by far, and he offered a glimpse of what life on a starship would be like for a teenage boy. While Wesley was not my absolute favorite character, I never understood all the backlash and hate he has received from some viewers. The writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation did not seem to know quite what to do with Wesley much of the time, but I think the character had a lot of potential and I wish he had stayed on the show longer.

Wesley Crusher Was Mishandled During Star Trek: The Next Generation's Early Seasons

Tng's early season writers didn't quite know what to do with wesley..

Wesley Crusher was originally conceived as a bit of a stand-in for Gene Roddenberry, and who wouldn't want to be a young boy genius who gets to live on a starship? But Wesley's genius was part of the problem. As a child prodigy, Wes sometimes found solutions to problems that had evaded even the most senior members of the Enterprise crew. This made the more experienced crew members look incompetent, which didn't exactly endear Wesley to viewers. Still, it wasn't the character's fault (or Wil Wheaton's) that Wes was too often written poorly in TNG .

Wil Wheaton delivered a solid performance and Wes had a lot of potential if only he had been taken more seriously as a character and given better storylines. Episodes like TNG season 1, episode 3, "The Naked Now" and season 1, episode 8, "Justice" both feature Wesley stories that fall flat. But these two episodes had weak stories from the beginning, suggesting Wesley wasn't the problem. In these early episodes, it was clear the writers were still developing the characters, and Wes just didn't get the development that many of the other characters did.

Wesley Crusher's Later Star Trek: TNG Stories Prove He Had Much More To Give

Tng's "final mission" & "the first duty" are both strong episodes..

Wesley had a few standout moments throughout TNG seasons 1 and 2, such as "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Pen Pals," but he doesn't get much to do in season 3. It feels like the people behind the scenes saw that Wes wasn't quite working as a character, so they stopped giving him significant storylines. But then the last episode with Wesley as a member of the main cast is surprisingly good. In TNG season 4, episode 9, "Final Mission," Captain Picard travels with Wes to Starfleet Academy, but their shuttle crashes on the way there.

I enjoyed that Wes behaved like a normal teenager in "The First Duty," but still proved himself to be a genuinely good person.

When Picard is seriously injured, Wes has to keep him alive until the Enterprise arrives, and he comes across as smart and capable. I have a particular fondness for "Final Mission," as well as TNG 's "The First Duty," which shows another side to Wes. After he's involved in a flight accident that kills another cadet, Wesley participates in a cover-up with his fellow Nova Squadron members which results in him receiving a dressing down from Captain Picard. I enjoyed that Wes behaved like a normal teenager in "The First Duty," but still proved himself to be a genuinely good person.

Way back in TNG season 1's "Where No One Has Gone Before," a mysterious being known as the Traveler (Eric Menyuk) informed Picard that Wesley was destined for greatness. After Wesley left to join the Travelers in "Journey's End," he remained mostly absent from Star Trek for 28 years (aside from a brief cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis ) . Although he popped up in Star Trek: Picard season 2, Traveler Wesley made a more significant return in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2. I'm glad we finally got to see Wes having fun, galavanting throughout time and space, and saving the universe.

I can't help thinking of all of the adventures we could have witnessed had Wesley joined the Travelers earlier in TNG . Still, Prodigy delivered a great Wesley Crusher story, providing some closure for the character if it does turn out to be the last we see of him. Although, since Wes can travel throughout time and space, he could make an appearance in any Star Trek project, regardless of its place in the timeline. I, for one, really hope future Trek projects take advantage of this, giving Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher the fun and compelling storylines he never got on Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Construction work in Moscow unearths 9000-year-old flint tools

Flint cutters were every-day items used by Stone Age people.

Archaeologists discovered rare flint Stone Age tools in Moscow during construction work in the downtown, reports the official website of the Moscow Mayor’s office . A flint cutter has been dated to the Neolithic era (3,000-5,000 BC), and a fragment of a flint scraper dates to the Mesolithic era (7,000 BC). These items are the most ancient tools ever found in Russia’s capital.  

Flint cutters were every-day items used by Stone Age people, and the one found is in excellent condition, complete with lateral symmetrical recesses for fastening a handle made of bone, horn or wood.

"This discovery is very important for archaeologists, and confirms our theory that this area was developed by humans long before streets and houses were built here," said Alexey Yemelianov, the head of Moscow’s Cultural Heritage Department.

Both the flint cutter and scrapper were found in a cultural layer that dates to the 16 th and 17 th centuries of our era, and experts surmise that these Stone Age tools came to the surface from deeper and more ancient cultural layers during building of Moscow’s earthen fortifications about 400 to 500 years ago.

Yemelianov said the flint tools might be handed over to a local museum, or put on temporary display in an exhibition devoted to Moscow archeology.

Star Trek's Leonard Nimoy Fought To Get Nichelle Nichols & George Takei Paid

Some Trekkies might be able to tell you that filming "Star Trek: The Original Series" wasn't always a pleasant experience for the cast . Indeed, stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were both notorious spotlight hogs and Shatner was known to reassign other actors' dialogue to himself, usually badgering directors until they agreed. Nimoy, meanwhile, knew that his character, Spock, was the most recognizable element of the show, and was happy to promote himself as the star of the series. The clash of egos reportedly got so bad that show creator Gene Roddenberry had to write an angry letter to the two lead actors (also DeForest Kelley) admonishing them for their bratty behavior. "You've pretty well divided up the market on selfishness and egocentricity," Roddenberry wrote.

Trekkies will hasten to point out that, while Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley were the only three cast members listed in the show's opening credits, "Star Trek" functions best when seen as an ensemble drama. The same members of the bridge crew would appear every week, and many felt it was heartening to see characters like Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Lieutenant Sulu (George Takei), and Ensign Chekov (Walter Koenig) joining in on the adventures every week. Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley, one might expect, were paid more than their co-stars — a fact that, over time, made Nimoy a little upset.

The website TrekMovie once reached out to Nimoy to discuss the pay disparities and how the actor eventually became a champion for his co-stars. After "Star Trek" ended its run in 1969, Nimoy became a lot more sympathetic to how Nichols, Takei, and Koenig weren't getting enough money, and he frequently stood up against the franchise's penny-pinching overseers, hoping to help them. Because of this, Nimoy soon found himself the moral center of the cast.

Star Trek's Desilu years

It's worth remembering that "Star Trek" didn't become hugely popular until after it had to be canceled and put into syndication. Only through reruns did it find its audience. The reruns became popular enough to earn a lot of royalties for the actors while also inspiring a series of "Star Trek" conventions, which have been held on the regular since the early 1970s. Eventually, in 1973, an animated "Star Trek" TV spinoff was put into production. By then, Nimoy was a lot more sensitive to the pay structure and fame dynamic when it came to the cast. He also knew that he had to fight to ensure Nichols, Koenig, and Takei were included in the ensemble. Back in what he called "the Desilu years," Nimoy said he pushed back a lot. In his own words:

"There was also the case where George and Nichelle [were] not hired to do their voices in the animated series. I refused to do Spock until they were hired. Mr. Roddenberry started calling me the conscience of 'Star Trek.'"

While Nichols and Takei ultimately reprised their roles for "Star Trek: The Animated Series," Koenig was sadly cut out of that deal and Chekov didn't appear on the show . Koenig, however, recalled in a 2014 interview with the Las Vegas Sun that Nimoy had his co-stars backs from the very start (particularly Nichols):

"When it came to the attention of the cast that there was a disparity in pay in that George and I were getting the same pay, but Nichelle was not getting as much, I took it to Leonard and he took it to the front office and they corrected that." 

Despite his anger-inspiring ego, Nimoy proved himself to be a stand-up fellow. Or, as Koenig put it, he was "a very good man. Sound ethics and a good sense of morality."

Star Trek's Most Popular Show Is About To Rebuild TOS Canon

Will we see Bones and Sulu again very soon?

With a possible reboot “origin story” feature film in the works and a new future-tense Starfleet Academy series focused on brand-new characters, the original 1960s continuity of Star Trek might seem very distant from the current franchise offerings. And yet, in Star Trek’s most popular show — Strange New Worlds — the canon and vibes of TOS are suddenly more prominent than ever. Going into Season 3 and beyond, it seems that Strange New Worlds is readying to redefine the backstory not just of Spock, Uhura, and Kirk, but the rest of the classic gang, too.

Speaking to multiple outlets, and as reported by TrekMovie , following San Diego Comic-Con, Strange New Worlds showrunners, cast, and crew have laid down quite a bit of information about what’s to come in Season 3 and, hypothetically, the already-greenlit Season 4. For serious Trekkies, the biggest development isn’t that Strange New Worlds will hint at or reference TOS a bit more. Instead, this prequel show is basically going to “drive right into” the start of the first Trek ever.

Scotty becomes a regular — Bones and Sulu next?

While many Strange New Worlds fans were probably aware that Martin Quinn’s take on Scotty would return for SNW Season 3, it was recently confirmed that Quinn would be part of the regular cast, not just a recurring character. (I.E. Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk is not a regular cast member of SNW , despite appearing in three episodes of Season 2.) Scotty’s appearance at the end of Season 2 in the cliffhanger “Hegemony” was a well-kept secret in the Star Trek camp, which makes fans and pundits wonder if new versions of Hikaru Sulu and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy are next.

While not confirming Bones and Sulu appearances in Strange New Worlds Season 3, co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told Variety :

“These characters are not the people that they will become when we get to The Original Series . They are still younger. They are going through things. They have a lot of life and lessons to go through. They have some growth to do so you don’t see them exactly the way that you would see them later on.”

While the Prime Universe version of Pavel Chekov will be canonically far too young to appear in Strange New Worlds , Bones, and Sulu are very good bets. In two episodes of TOS , Bones works side-by-side with Dr. M'Benga, who in SNW is the current chief medical officer of the Enterprise . M’Benga was a guest character played by Booker Bradshaw in TOS , but Babs Olusanmokun’s performance has utterly redefined the character. So looking at the way SNW handles the rest of the legacy characters (like Paul Wesley’s Kirk and Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura) is probably a good indication as to how a young Sulu and Bones could appear.

One fun canon note on Bones in Strange New Worlds : If he does appear, it could create a Deep Space Nine crossover. In the 1996 DS9 episode “Trials and Tribble-ations,” Jadzia Dax(Terry Farrell) insinuated one of her previous Trill hosts, Emony Dax, was romantically involved with Bones when he was a younger man. So via Bones, could we get a retro version of Dax?

How Strange New Worlds Could Become the new TOS

Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) strike a very classic pose in Season 2.

The biggest takeaway from the various post-San Diego Comic-Con interviews with Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman is that Strange New Worlds is not shying away from its fidelity to The Original Series . Nurse Chapel’s former fiance turned-robot in TOS, Roger Korby, will appear in SNW Season 3, now played by Cillian O’Sullivan. Both Goldsman and Myers noted that his relationship with Chapel (Jess Bush) will be complicated in Season 3, and that “[he] is going to travel a long path before he gets to be the Roger Korby that you see in The Original Series .”

With Season 4 already in the planning stages, Myers and Goldsman know that they’re getting closer and closer to the timeline of The Original Series, around the year 2265. Season 2 of Strange New Worlds was firmly in 2260, which suddenly feels much closer to the classic era than Discovery Season 2 did when it introduced Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and the Enterprise in the year 2258. So as SNW keeps going, even if fictional years don’t pass every single season, the showrunners are very aware that they’re inching closer and closer to that classic era.

Speaking to Collider , Goldsman said, “Left to our own devices, which really means if Paramount will, we’ll keep going into the TOS era.”

This notion that Strange New Worlds could overlap with TOS has a massive canon precedent. Chronologically, the very first regular episode of The Original Series (not counting the unaired pilot “The Cage”) is “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” which takes place in 2265. But the funny thing is, all the other Season 1 TOS episodes mostly take place in 2266, meaning that not only do we not know what happened in the years leading up to Kirk taking command of the Enterprise , but we also know almost nothing about what happened during Kirks’ first year, other than that one episode.

Outside of providing great standalone episodes of Star Trek, this detail is perhaps the most interesting for longtime Trekkies. Because at some point, Strange New Worlds could turn into The Original Series Year 1.

Or, as Goldsman told Variety, “We will continue on for as long as Paramount lets us. We will drive right into The Original Series .”

Star Trek: Discovery pushed both the makeup designs and cultural background of Klingons with characters like Chancellor L'Rell (Mary Chieffo) and outcast torchbearer Voq (Shazad Latif).

Worf garnered honor for both the Federation and the Klingon Empire, serving as the Captain of the USS Enterprise-E and winning the title of Chancellor before turning it over to Martok (J.G. Hertzler). Even with these accolades, no other full-blooded Klingons are known to have followed Worf into Starfleet.

If the Empire doesn't exist in Star Trek 's 32nd century, Starfleet may be one of just a few promising paths to glory. A new Klingon cadet may simply want to explore the galaxy, after the Burn prevented it. Regardless of the reason, a new Klingon cadet would be a great addition to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , and a way to answer these two long-standing Klingon questions.
