The Ultimate Guide to Your First Time in Columbia SC

Live performances in columbia sc, you know you're at usc when... you spot these 8 iconic campus landmarks.

Whether you’re a returning alum, soon-to-be student, family member, a visiting fan of an opposing team or just happen to be wandering around Columbia and find yourself on the University of South Carolina campus, here are some of the spots that make UofSC so special.

The Horseshoe

The university’s original campus, the Historic Horseshoe is now a picturesque place to relax, study, or have in impromptu photo shoot. Twelve historic buildings skirt the edges of the space, forming a U-shape that gives the area its name. Brick pathways break up the lawn and many of these bricks are engraved with special messages from past and present students (bonus points if you find the ones for local legends Hootie & The Blowfish!). On sunny days, you’ll find people reading books on park benches, playing Frisbee with friends, walking their dogs and having picnics.  Find a stretch of shaded grass and settle in for some idyllic scenery and top-notch people-watching.

Williams-Brice Stadium

The only facility in town that can accommodate 80,000 of your closest friends was first constructed in 1934 but continues to be modernized for state-of-the art game days, concerts and more.  Come fall, the streets are a sea of garnet and black as fans make their way in droves to Williams-Brice Stadium for some good ‘ole Gamecock football. The sounds of Sandstorm and cheers fill the air and fireworks light up the sky every time the home team scores. Regardless of the shock absorbers and the overall safety of the structure, there is a noticeable ripple effect that happens throughout the distinguishable upper deck of the stadium during especially exciting games when fans become over-enthused. As former head football coach Joe Morrison once said, “If it ain’t swayin’, we ain’t playin’.”

A’ja Wilson Statue at Colonial Life Arena

A’ja Wilson will forever hold a place in the hearts of Gamecock fans after leading the team (under beloved coach Dawn Staley) to a 2017 NCAA National Championship in women’s basketball. In 2021, the hoops hero earned a permanent place on campus with a statue outside Colonial Life Arena , the Gamecocks’ home court. The tradition continues as the women’s basketball team brought home another championship in 2022.

Reflecting Pool at Thomas Cooper Library

The steady waters of the reflecting pool and fountain in front of Thomas Cooper Library bring a sense of calm to passersby and stressed-out students (as well as provide the perfect backdrop to any photo!). Park benches dot the outskirts of the pool for reading or lunch breaks and when it comes time for a major sports achievement or graduation, it’s not uncommon for people to swarm the waters in celebration. And just think - the design of the pool was almost discarded in favor of a parking lot!

Greene Street

With wrought-iron gates on either end and a big, bright Gamecock emblazoned in paint on the asphalt, Greene Street is the road that runs outside Russell House, the student union. Rallies, a small farmer’s market, organization fairs and more all take place on this campus thoroughfare.

USC Smokestack

Behind Rutledge College, turn your gaze upward and you’ll see a red brick smokestack proudly bearing “USC” along the side. The structure was built in 1913 as a coal heating plant for the campus. You can spot it for miles and against the backdrop of a sunny Columbia sky, the view is nothing short of majestic.

Capstone Building

Reaching 18 stories into the sky, this landmark residence hall is widely known for not only housing students, but also the Top of Carolina – a revolving restaurant that is open to the public. Enjoy lunch alongside breathtaking views of campus and the city beyond. The top of Capstone is also lit up in garnet every now and then to commemorate special occasions (the garnet lights could be seen near and far when the Lady Gamecocks took home the 2022 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship).

The Clapping Circle on Russell House Patio

This circular brick formation on the outdoor patio of Russell House is so much more than meets the eye… and ear. Stand in the center of the circle, clap your hands and you (and only you!) will hear a distinctive chirping sound. Don’t be afraid of looking silly! Experiencing the clapping circle is a USC tradition and a rite of passage of sorts for all who step foot on campus.

Hail to the chiefs: Presidential visits to USC, in pictures

For future, current and former presidents, the road to and from the White House often leads through Trojan territory.

We haven’t had a Trojan as U.S. president yet, but USC had has more than its share of presidential moments — starting on Oct. 23, 1880, when President Rutherford B. Hayes stopped by to visit the 17-day-old university. In honor of Presidents Day, here’s a look at some other memorable visits by U.S. commanders in chief — past, present and future.

William Howard Taft

The 27th president of the United States — who later served on the Supreme Court as its 10th chief justice — toured the USC campus in 1911 during a visit to Los Angeles.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Roosevelts visit the Coliseum in 1935

The 32nd president of the United States visited in 1935 during his first term in office; it was his first time in Los Angeles as president. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, stopped by the USC administration building, where the president was given an honorary degree. His motorcade then headed to the Coliseum, where he gave a speech to the assembled crowd.

Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon at USC

The 1960 campaign brought two future presidents to USC as candidates participating in the university’s First-Time Voter Convocation.

U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy spoke to a crowd of some 15,000 students from USC and 27 other colleges and universities; one week later, he was elected.

A few weeks before the Kennedy visit, Vice President Richard M. Nixon spoke to supporters on campus. Nixon — whose wife, Pat Nixon, was a USC alumna — was elected to the nation’s highest office eight years later, defeating Hubert H. Humphrey in the 1968 election.

Gerald R. Ford

President Ford at USC

As 38th president of the United States, Ford visited the USC campus during his 1976 campaign against Jimmy Carter.

A few weeks after Ford lost the election, he suffered another defeat: the University of Michigan, where he had been a football standout during his college days, lost to USC in the 1977 Rose Bowl. Ford sent a $10 bill to USC President John Hubbard to settle a wager over the game. “Seriously, I really thought that Michigan would win, but I must admit that USC has an excellent team,” Ford wrote Hubbard on White House stationery.

After leaving office, Ford returned to USC twice to lecture in a variety of classes.

Ronald Reagan

Ronald and Nancy Reagan with USC President James H. Zumberge and USC Vice President Anthony Lazzaro

Los Angeles hosted the 1984 Olympics during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, and with USC right in the thick of things the 40th president of the United States visited the campus before officially opening the games.

It wasn’t his first time at USC, though: As a young actor, Reagan had modeled for art students in a sculpture class as an example of the “ideal male physique.”

Ronald Reagan poses for an art class.

Just a few months into his first term as vice president, Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, were in the crowd at the USC Gould School of Law’s commencement ceremony. Biden was on hand to see his nephew, Cuffe Biden Owens, receive his JD degree; we’re still waiting for a visit from Biden as commander in chief.

Barack Obama

President Obama visits USC

The nation’s  44th president visited the University Park Campus  in 2010. His speech in front of Doheny Memorial Library — a rally just before the November midterm elections — drew an estimated 37,500 people.

Thirteen years later, he returned to USC with Michelle Obama for his daughter Sasha’s graduation.

George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush

George and Laura bush posing with administration

George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, and former first Lady Laura Bush  came to campus in 2013  part of the USC President’s Distinguished Lecture Series. The two addressed students, faculty, guests and Widney Society members in a packed Bovard Auditorium. “It is a rare opportunity to spend this evening in the company of two people who have practiced leadership on such a global stage, at such pivotal moments in human history,” USC President C. L. Max Nikias told the crowd.

Some  13 years earlier , Bush’s father — George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president — had been a guest of USC President Steven B. Sample as part of the same lecture series. Sample reminded the crowd that President Bush was no stranger to the campus: “We honored him in 1995 with a Julius Award from the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development for his exceptional heroism during World War II and his extraordinary service to the people of the United States.”

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton posing with President Nikias

USC’s parade of former, current and future presidents continued in late 2014 when Bill Clinton took the Bovard stage at another President’s Distinguished Lecture Series event. “I wish I were your age,” the former president told students in the audience. “I’d love to see what’s going to happen. We’re entering an age of unprecedented discovery … It’s going to be an amazing time to be alive.”

USC Graduation Photoshoot Guide

Welcome! My name is Stanley and I am a graduation portrait photographer specializing in photoshoots at USC. This is my guide to help you get the best graduation photos at the University of Southern California.

In this guide, you’ll find helpful tips and information on how to get to campus, where to park, and a list of iconic locations to take photos to maximize your grad photo experience at USC.

I believe I can help because of my extensive experience at USC. I have been photographing USC graduates since 2016 over hundreds of sessions, and some of my best friends are Trojans. I know the culture, understand student life, and most importantly, how to get some amazing graduation portraits that show the unique experiences you’ve had at USC.

Best Photo Spots at USC

Here is a list of the few iconic locations and my favorite secret places at USC. I’ve listed them below, along with several examples of past sessions and location-specific tips to help plan your shoot!

1. Tommy Trojan Statue

As one of the most iconic locations at USC, Tommy Trojan Statue is situated at the center of campus, right next to Bovard Auditorium and the Student Center. The Tommy Trojan statue depicts an ancient Trojan warrior with a sword and shield ready for battle. Tommy makes for a great background to commemorate your school spirit as a USC Trojan. Bonus points if you can mirror his majestic pose!

2. Steps of Troy

The Steps of Troy are located at the Ronald Tutor Campus Center, a two-minute walk from Tommy Trojan. Engraved on the steps of Troy are the five virtues that embody the spirit of USC: Faithful, Scholarly, Skillful, Courageous, and Ambitious.

4. Alumni Park

One of the most beautiful locations at USC, the Alumni Park features a mini rose garden, the Prentiss Memorial Fountain, and stunning backdrops of Doheny Memorial Library and Bovard Auditorium, two landmarks where the park is situated between. Note that the mini rose garden is not available every month of the year; USC only plants the flowers seasonally. Luckily, spring graduations do coincide with their planting and blooming schedule.

5. Center for International & Public Affairs (CPA)

The Center for International and Public Affairs itself is a testament to the diversity of the USC student body. There are 108 flags representing the 100+ home countries of students. As of 2021, USC has removed the flags. However, the grand hallways still provide an excellent backdrop for some unique portraits.

Center for International & Public Affairs maps location linked here.

6. Mudd Hall of Philosophy (MHP)

The Mudd Hall of Philosophy features beautiful Tuscan-style architecture, with classic red bricks and stone pillars to complete the overall vintage collegiate look. Graduates often take pictures in the courtyard and hallways of MHP.

USC football: Which 12 prospects are expected to take official visits to campus this weekend?

  • Author: Connor Morrissette

In this story:

USC Trojans

Official visit season is here and the  USC Trojans are expected to host 12 class of 2024 prospects this weekend, according to a source. We break down the group below.

Taylor Tatum

Position: Running back

School: Longview (Texas)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 31 nationally. No. 1 ranked running back

Measurables : 5-foot-10, 205 pounds

The skinny : Tatum plans to take six official visits, but right now the three leaders in his recruitment are USC, Oklahoma and Michigan. It's unlikely Tatum commits to USC this weekend, but the Trojans are definitely in the race.

Zabien Brown

Position: Cornerback

School: Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 57 nationally. No. 7 ranked cornerback

Measurables : 6-foot-1, 180 pounds

The skinny : Brown's top four schools are USC, Ohio State, Alabama and Oregon. He'll officially visit them in that order. Brown has been compared to USC cornerback Domani Jackson, who also attended Mater Dei, by his former head coach at the school, Bruce Rollinson.

Dakoda Fields

School: Serra (Gardena, Calif.)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 78 nationally. No. 10 ranked cornerback

Measurables : 6-foot-2, 175 pounds

The skinny : Fields has long been an Oregon lean. USC will need to make up some major ground in order to land him. Fields released a top 7 earlier this month that included Cal, Miami, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, USC and Washington.

Kameryn Fountain

Position: Edge

School: Booker T. Washington (Atlanta)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 81 nationally. No. 7 ranked edge rusher

Measurables : 6-foot-5, 237 pounds

The skinny : Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida State are also recruiting Fountain. As a top 100 defensive recruit, landing Fountain would be a major win for USC.

Walter Matthews

Position:  Tight end

School: Hiram (Ga.)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 115 nationally. No. 7 ranked tight end

Measurables : 6-foot-7, 245 pounds

The skinny : It seems like USC has a real shot to land Matthews. Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State and Colorado are also involved.

Jaylen McClain

Position: Safety

School:  Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 243 nationally. No. 22 ranked safety

Measurables : 6-foot-0, 185 pounds

The skinny : McClain has included USC in his top ten along with Notre Dame, Penn State, Oregon, Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers, Stanford, Tennessee and Georgia.

Isaiah Garcia

Position: Offensive tackle

School: Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 212 nationally. No. 20 ranked tackle

Measurables : 6-foot-5, 280 pounds

The skinny : USC will likely take three offensive linemen this cycle and Garcia could be one of the headliners of the group. Garcia's top ten includes Nebraska, UCLA, Alabama, Miami, USC, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, Stanford and Utah.

Manasse Itete

School: Central Catholic (Modesto, Calif.)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Four-star prospect, No. 314 nationally. No. 28 ranked tackle

School: Cherry Creek (Englewood, Colo.)

247Sports.com composite ranking: Three-star prospect, No. 98 ranked tackle

Measurables : 6-foot-6, 300 pounds

The skinny : Treter is a candidate to rise in the recruiting rankings following the spring and summer evaluation periods. Oregon, Tennessee and a few other schools are recruiting him.

Top-100 cb rj sermons confirms second unofficial visit to washington, share this article.

The Washington Huskies appear to be getting solid early returns on the recruiting trail from the 2026 class. Jedd Fisch’s coaching staff has already earned two commitments from running back Ansu Sanoe and kicker CJ Wallace  and is looking to add a few more by the end of the year.

Although he might not be making his commitment by the end of the year, cornerbacks coach John Richardson has developed a strong relationship with Rancho Cucamonga High School product RJ Sermons, who told On3’s Chad Simmons that he’ll be taking his second unofficial to Montlake during the season.

Sermons took a trip to Washington for the coaching staff’s Luau At The Lake in July and will be making the rounds to visit the West Coast’s top programs again this fall.

“What caught my attention [at Washington] was the facilities, the coaches, the people there, and the environment outside of football,” Sermons told Simmons. “It’s a super nice town, and the coaches are super knowledgeable. [Defensive coordinator Steve] Belichick and coach J-Rich are super smart football guys.”

Along with unofficial visits to both USC and Oregon , the 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 51 overall prospect and No. 5 player at his position by 247Sports, said he will take his next trip to Seattle for the rematch of the 2023 national championship when the Huskies take on the Michigan Wolverines on October 5.

Dawn Staley visits the U.S. Embassy with Guy Fieri and Wanda Sykes while at 2024 Paris Olympics

Portrait of John Leuzzi

Dawn Staley continues to be busy at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

And the latest stop for the South Carolina women's basketball coach included a visit to the U.S. Embassy in Paris with Wanda Sykes, where the two met up with chef and host of Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" Guy Fieri. Staley also paid a visit to US Ambassador to France and Morocco Denise Campbell Bauer's house.

"Had the distinct pleasure of touring the amazing US Embassy here in Paris….along with visiting Ambassador Bauer in her beautiful home. Thankful for servicemen and women and all of those who have dedicated their lives to serve. Grateful for this experience," Staley wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

2024 Paris Olympics: Follow USA TODAY's full coverage of the Summer Olympics

Staley's latest adventure over the pond comes after taking in the USA women's basketball 3x3 game in Paris on Tuesday with Sykes, one in which the United States — whose roster includes former LSU guard Hailey Van Lith and is coached by Staley's former college teammate Tammi Reiss — was upset by Germany 17-13.

And then you can't forget about Staley finding her love, and perhaps new obsession, for Mexican Coca-Cola Cherry  in Paris, one in which led to Coca-Cola sending the Gamecocks coach a care package Wednesday. She has also made appearances at the U.S. Women's Basketball game on Monday to watch former South Carolina star A'Ja Wilson, watching Katie Ledecky compete in the poo l and the U.S. Women's Water Polo team with Flavor Flav among other stops.

The three-time national championship coach is in Paris as part of a United States presidential delegation with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Where will Staley be next?

You will have to see, but you can probably count on her showing up to the USA Basketball vs. South Sudan later today and Wilson's game tomorrow when the United States takes on Belgium.

Who are Cole and Ella Emhoff? Harris' stepchildren step into the spotlight

Doug Emhoff, Ella and Cole smile standing next to each other

Behind Vice President Kamala Harris’ persona as “Momala” are her two stepchildren: Cole and Ella Emhoff. And the two of them are increasingly stepping into the limelight.

The youngest members of the second family, Cole, 29, and Ella, 25, are the children of second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who was previously married to film producer Kerstin Emhoff.

On Tuesday night, Cole Emhoff introduced his father for night two of the Democratic National Convention, presenting a heartfelt video documenting the second gentleman's life in photos.

"We might not look like other families in the White House, but we are ready to represent all families in America," he said in his voiceover of the video.

Follow live updates on the 2024 DNC

Since the pandemic and President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential run, Ella Emhoff has become a social media phenomenon.

Dubbed by some as the “First Daughter of Bushwick,” the New York City resident is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and in 2021 was signed as a model to renowned agency IMG Models. She also made a  cameo  in Bo Burham’s 2013 music video “Repeat Stuff.”

Gen Z Americans have connected with her androgynous fashion sense and quirky hobbies since her stepmother took office as vice president. She said in a  2021 New York Times interview , conducted alongside her brother, that her mom, Doug Emhoff and Harris are a “three-person parenting squad.”

They don’t always get her interests, she said, but they’re supportive anyway. “With hair and tattoos and things like that, I think they’re all in the realm of like, ‘I don’t understand it, but I want you to be who you want to be,’” she said.

She has been featured on magazine covers and in editorials, and has walked runways. She’s also known for her knitting club, “Soft Hands Knit Club,” where she taught New York City community members to knit using her own materials.

On her website, Ella Emhoff describes herself as a multidisciplinary artist and creator. She’s active on Instagram, where she mostly shares photos of her knitting, modeling and her dog.

In the New York Times interview, Ella described her parents’ relationship as “like the honeymoon phase forever,” saying she shares a close bond with her stepmom.

“It’s a cool dynamic we all have. And I think it is a good model to show that you can have this and this isn’t weird,” she said.

Cole Emhoff is significantly quieter than his sister where his social media presence is concerned, but he has also put his close relationship with Harris on display many times. At his wedding last year, Harris officiated the ceremony.

“It was so wonderful that the kids asked me to do it,” Harris  told People magazine  at the time. “For us, we think of marriage as being not just between these two people, but the coming together of families. So it was very much with that spirit that we all participated.”

Cole Emhoff said he loved Harris from their first meeting, when he was a senior in high school.

“I met her and we had this amazing dinner. And I realized like, Oh, my God, Doug has met someone who is completely unique and totally special,” he  told Glamour  in 2020.

Both siblings attended Biden’s inauguration in 2021, and behind-the-scenes photos from the event broke up Cole’s otherwise low-key Instagram feed.

“It’s weird to turn on CNN and see my dad. I’m like, ‘Wait, you don’t belong there! But I guess you do?’” he said in the New York Times interview. “It feels completely unprecedented for us because we haven’t really been around politics our entire life. We’re still kind of getting used to it.”
