Sun Mountain Kube Golf Travel Bag Review

The Sun Mountain Kube golf travel cover provides plenty of club protection but folds up small for storage.  Lighter weight allows you to pack more.

Introduction

Whether you use a hard case or a soft-sided travel cover, your golf travel bag probably takes up an entire closet when it’s not in use.  And, if you’re anything like me, you don’t have an entire closet to spare.  Sun Mountain’s Kube travel cover seeks to solve this problem by collapsing to a manageable size when not in use.

When folded up, the Kube doesn’t look like any other golf travel cover , which is exactly the point.  The hard shell looks more like your typical carry-on than a golf bag.  After you open it up, the Kube retains its unique appearance as the bright colored shell protects the top and bottom of the bag.  Sun Mountain kept the branding very minimal because when your product looks like nothing else, you don’t need to shout.

The Sun Mountain Kube comes in eight colorways .  They range from black, grey, and white, to bolder options like “Inferno” (seen here) and the lime green “Rush.”  Regardless of the exterior color, the interior is a dark grey.

Everything about the Sun Mountain Kube is top notch.  The shell feels like it could withstand the most careless baggage handler .  The interior is made of durable ballistic nylon, and the top is well-padded to protect the club heads.  Finally, all of the zippers and clips have a heavy-duty feel that made me confident my clubs would survive their journey.

Design & Performance

The first question I had when I saw the Kube was, “Once I unfold it, will I be able to make it small again?”  I was pleasantly surprised to find that folding and unfolding the Kube is extremely easy .  The Kube is held together with three clips, each of which has its own protective housing for when its unfolded (see it in action  HERE ).  The Kube can be folded up and secured in just a few seconds.

When it’s folded up, the Kube is extremely easy to store .  As you can see above, it’s a fraction of the size of your standard travel cover (9″ X 13″ X 14.5″, per Sun Mountain).  It’s also light – 6.8 pounds vs. 10+ pounds – which means you don’t have to worry about incurring extra baggage fees.

Of course, none of that matters if the Kube can’t hold your gear securely.  With internal dimensions of 52″ X 14″ X 14″, the Kube can easily hold any golf bag .  Internal straps can lock your set in place if you travel with a smaller bag like I do.

There are also two internal pockets for stashing clothes, balls, or whatever else you don’t want to carry on.  I was able to store my clubs, three dozen balls, a pair of shoes, and a week’s worth of clothes with room and weight to spare .

If your current golf travel cover is eating up all your storage space or attacking you every time you open your closet, consider upgrading to the Sun Mountain Kube.  In spite of its tiny folded size, this travel cover provides all the storage space and club protection that you need.

How does the fabric feel as compared to the clubglove? #secretgiveaway4

It’s not quite as thick, but it’s a very sturdy nylon. You’d really have to work to damage this.

Can you comment a little more on the padding/protection? It looks as if there is no padding throughout the body and minimal padding around the top of the bag. Very neat idea, but I cannot imagine it protects like some other soft cover bags?

There’s a hard case around half of the top and bottom. The padding is fairly minimal. In my opinion, padding is nice but it’s no substitute for a hard case. Said another way: what is padding going to protect your clubs from that a single layer of thick nylon won’t? If you pack your clubs well, the Kube should protect them from anything except truly negligent baggage handling.

Hi, would a siff arm from club glove protect the clubs anymore? Or is there really no need for one? Thank you

The Stiff Arm is designed to give the case more structure and protect the shafts from breakage. The Kube’s hard top gives a little more impact resistance, at least on one side. I think having both is a fine idea.

Did you lock the zippers? What did you use? Just got a Kube but finding nothing that will secure the zippers.

Modern travel covers now come in all different shapes and sizes, all with the goal of safely transporting your golf clubs on their journey through baggage handling for your golf trip. Much innovation has been seen in this area of the market and the new Sun Mountain Kube travel cover is evidence of that. It is a uniquely designed cover that offers hard shell casing around key areas of the cover, all while folding up to a pint-sized cube shape for easy storage at home and on holiday. I took it on four flights across Europe to test out this system for myself. Most importantly, could it do the basics right and keep my golf clubs protected on my travels? 

Folded up, the Kube has dimensions of just 23cm x 33cm x 38cm - barely making a mark wherever you have the space to store your travel bags. I found it especially useful in a hotel room, where standard travel covers can often take up much of the floor space while you're trying to enjoy your trip. The only other travel bag to offer such a fantastic way of storage is the Motocaddy Flightsafe travel cover which is slightly larger and heavier in its execution. 

Neatly packed away on the hotel room floor, the storage solution really comes into its own when you're away on trips. 

The handy byproduct of this unique system is the extra padding it provides when the bag is in use. The hard-case shell expands to the top and bottom end of the bag, giving robust protection, especially to the top end of the bag where protection is needed the most. There are also two internal and two external compression straps that tightly hold down your bag to stop it from moving around whilst on its travels. On the four flights I've used the Kube on so far, my clubs have come back perfectly intact with everything placed in the bag remaining exactly where I put it before departure. 

I think my favorite thing about the Kube aside from the way it folds away is how lightweight it is. Coming in at just 3.08kg (6.8lbs) it leaves you with so much weight to add to the bag. Compared to the Ram Fx travel cover , which weighs in at 4.08kg (9lbs), you'll be able to take more away with you in the Kube. Most airlines will allow a golf bag to be no more than 20kg - it can be up to 23kg on some airlines - and you certainly want to make the most of that booked baggage. The lightweight nature of the Kube allows for this and I was able to pack - alongside a full set of golf clubs - three pairs of golf shoes, my golf clothes for the trip, and a toiletries bag. All told this was exactly 20kg on one flight I took earlier this year, leaving me an extra 3kg on the more generous airline. It negates the need to book an extra checked bag for trips and it'll save you money booking more baggage in the long run. It's worth noting I'm not a light traveler either...

The two internal pockets on the Kube lacked much depth. You could conceivably squeeze a pair of shoes in each, but it would be a squeeze. I opted for belts and dirty washing! 

The only thing the Kube was lacking for me was some extra pockets. There are two small internal pockets that I used to carry belts and dirty washing, but in truth, they're not very large. This leaves things like golf shoes, caps, toiletries, or whatever else you pack next to your clubs, freely floating around inside. Some travel covers like the Sun Mountain Club Glider Meridian , Ram FX and Macgregor VIP II travel cover also feature outer pockets for more organized storage, something the Kube lacks. Whether you want to store things in external pockets on a travel cover is another topic entirely. 

Overall I really enjoyed my experience of traveling with the Kube. Its unique storage functionality is incredibly useful but, most importantly, it does the basics right by keeping golf clubs well protected. Those who like to travel as close to the weight limit as possible will deeply appreciate the extra weight you can pack into it thanks to the lightweight design and I fully expect to be racking up plenty more air miles with the Kube in tow.

REVIEW: Sun Mountain Golf Kube travel cover

Maybe you’ve seen the Sun Mountain Kube before. I hadn’t. New in 2019, a media friend of mine showed me one and I thought it was a suitcase.

“That’s my golf travel bag,” he corrected. (Seriously?) It was too small and cute for that to be true.

“That 12 x 12 cube fits all your golf clubs in it?”

It’s 14.5 x 13, but, yes, it does. The practicality blew my mind. It’s the first time I’ve ever sat and played with someone else’s golf bag like it was a puppy. ‘Wow,’ I thought, imagining the possibility of no more golf buddy trips with a cluster of bags all over. Hard shell on one side, padding on the other, looking like a block from Super Mario World, it’s an amazing concept and it works so perfectly.

NEW FEATURES: Sun Mountain’s newest travel bag meshes hard, ballistic-style nylon material with plastic half-shells to protect your clubs in a uniquely rock-soft utopia. Once you remove your clubs though, the bag gets even more practical, packing neatly into a lightweight (6.8 pound) cube.

DEFINING FEATURES: Golf travel bags can’t get much more practical, or portable, for that matter. With clubs inside, the heavily padded bag’s dimensions are 52" x 14" x 14", and with solid wheels it rolls easily in any direction. With clubs removed, the bag condenses into a tight, 9” x 13” x 14.5” cube in any of eight bold colors. Solid snaps lock the sides in place, and you could stack 12 of these in the trunk of a compact car. (Note: Squeezing 12 people into a compact car would overcorrect said lack of perspiration.)

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES: Multiple materials, each with their own intentional and complimentary purpose make unfolding, packing, unpacking and folding-back-up all a breeze. (Someone at Sun Mountain got an A+ in physics, and hopefully a raise!) If the bag has a weakness, it’s that it lacks the middle padding and molded tray of their Clubgliders. If it has another weakness, it’s that it’s so cool looking it may get stolen. That’s bad if it happens, but good if your insurance gets you new clubs. (And another Kube bag.) There is no shoe pouch specifically, but that’s not necessarily a deterrent.

COMPARABILITY: As a frequent golf traveler, I’ve gone through several travel bags. My hard-shell cases have had failing clasps and broken wheels. The soft-shells have had wonky zippers and weakly stitched (easily worn) pressure points. Sun Mountain addressed and anticipated those faults well, placing extra fabric reinforcement in specific spots to prevent excessive wear and tear and by adding full-length, heavy-duty, two-way zippers. Is it better than the Clubglider? To be honest, they are actually incomparable.

COST AND VALUE: Retailing at $230, the bag isn't inexpensive. That said, novelty is certainly part of the price, and practicality is probably the rest. I don’t know what price I’d have put on one of these ($150 maybe) but I do know that I’m unlikely to need (or want) a different golf travel bag this decade so, that extra $80 is worth it to me.

This is a beast of no burden, except for the initial cost.

“Revolutionary” is an overused word when it comes to new product lines, but it fits properly here. I remain in awe of this carry bag and encourage everyone to check them out. I’m not sure how I’d react to someone coming up to play with my golf travel bag, but I’m thankful I did that myself, because it led me to owning this mini box of mucho mojo.

REVIEW: Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover

Travel covers are a necessary investment for traveling with your golf clubs.  You don’t need to be reminded of that investment every time you have to maneuver around a giant case in your garage, closet or storage space.  The  Sun Mountain Kube  is the perfect travel cover that protects your clubs, is lightweight, and folds into a small Kube when not in use.  I hadn’t found a reason to replace my old travel cover until now.  The  Sun Mountain Kube  is the travel cover of iGolfreviews.
