Traveling with a large number of people can be an extremely stressful experience. However, one of the major perks of traveling with a large group is that you can take advantage of special discounts and other benefits. Airlines like Southwest offer numerous advantages for group bookings and some of them can save you a lot of time and headache.

In this article, I will tell you everything you need to know about the Southwest Airlines Group Travel policy . I’ll cover things like discounts, deposits, and I will also talk about the savings. I’ll also show you the phone number that you need to call for group bookings and what to expect.

  • No Extra Fees:  No booking, ticketing, or change fees.

Things to know

$50 deposit.

While there is no upfront payment required to make a group reservation for you will be required to make a $50 deposit per passenger. This $50 deposit will not go towards your airfare cost and instead will be refunded within five business days after you have made your final payment.

Depending on how it is processed with your credit card provider it could take a statement or two for the refund show up. This unfortunately does put a bind on those dealing with smaller credit limits.

Note:  Credit card is the only approved form of payment for the deposit and payment may be made by uploading a completed and signed Letter of Authorization (LOA) form via  www.swagrouptravel.com  or by calling 1-800-433-5368.

Cancellation of your group reservation will result in forfeiture of the Deposit Amount. However, the passengers should still be eligible for travel funds , according to a rep I spoke with.

Southwest group travel phone number

The Southwest group travel phone number is: 1(800)433-5368 . The line is open Monday through Friday from 5AM to to 12AM Central standard time.  Group bookings must be made via phone and cannot be made online.

Something that you need to know about this phone number is that the hold times can be extremely long like this person who waited 4.5 hours . I doubt you will have to wait that long waits for over one or two hours are not that uncommon.

This is especially the case if you’re calling soon after a new schedule is released. So you should you’d be prepared to wait a very long time or try to call during non-peak hours.

Submitting passenger names

You will need to complete the Excel form which will allow you to input all the passenger names and then you can submit the form to the Southwest Airlines Group Travel Management page here . This spreadsheet template should be emailed to you after you contact Southwest via phone.

You will need to complete all of the different fields which include:

  • Group Leader Name
  • Departure Date
  • Confirmation Number
  • Passport information will be required for International Reservations

For the passengers you will need:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Redress number (if applicable)

I would suggest trying to get an exact match with the person’s government issued ID and the names that you input on the spreadsheet. You don’t always have to have an exact match with a middle name but I think that it helps.

If you need to make changes to the passenger names you can do this by entering your updates on the “Changes” tab on the Excel Name Template provided by Southwest Airlines. Remember that the names can be changed up to 72 hours prior to departure.

Submitting your payment

If you have already submitted a complete name list, you may call 1-800-433-5368 to pay over the phone, using a credit card or PayPal. You may also upload a completed Letter of Authorization (LOA) form on the Southwest Airlines Group Travel Management page.

Southwest does not accept multiple payments.

If paying via wire transfer, be sure to call or email [email protected] at least seven business days before your final payment due date to receive the detailed instructions for sending your wire transfer

Group Tickets are flight and date specific and cannot be changed, used or exchanged for travel on other flights.

How much are the discounts?

The amount of the discounted fare is just going to vary based on your flight. Southwest usually offers several different rates for the same flight and only a select few people can take advantage of each fare.

So for example, the lowest fare may only be available to 6 to 8 passengers, the second lowest fare may only be available to the next six to eight passengers and so on. I have no idea about the exact quantity of passengers but you get the idea….

When you book as a group you should receive a fare that is lower than the average price but probably not as low as the lowest available fare. In some cases, it could be cheaper for passengers to book their own individual tickets.

However, this probably depends on the size of the group. For large groups I would guess that you would be paying a below average rate and would be better off with the group travel rate, especially considering the added flexibility.

If you find a cheaper price online, Southwest is a little bit nebulous with what they will do. For example, that they answer this specific question by stating the following:

I saw a lower fare available on southwest.com versus what I was quoted through Group Travel Services. Can I get the website price in my group reservation? southwest.com  fares and Group fares differ in many ways, and each offers its own unique benefits. The best option for you is determined by your travel needs.  southwest.com  fares are often only available online and usually have limited quantities available. There may not be enough seats at the online price for your whole group.  southwest.com  fares tend to work best for small parties that don’t need much flexibility in their travel plans. Group fares work best for parties of ten or more who may require flexibility with name changes and payments.

This sounds like a nice way of telling you that you cannot get your price matched (or at least not a guaranteed match). It still probably would not hurt to call in and request the price match if you found it though. You never know what they might do.

TSA Pre-Check

You are not able to enter your Known Traveler Number when making Southwest Group Travel reservations. This means that the passengers will likely not receive TSA Pre-check. If you are not familiar with TSA Pre-check, it is a program that allows you access to expedited security screening and can save you a lot of time. You can find out more about the program here .

Rapid Rewards

When you input the names of the passengers traveling you will not have a field to enter in the Rapid Rewards number. This means that the passengers will not automatically receive Rapid Rewards for their flight. However, it does appear possible to call in after the fact and request for Rapid Rewards to be issued.

Flights from multiple departure points

If you have a lot of people flying to a single place from different places around the country you might be wondering if you can also qualify for the group travel rates. Southwest does offer an option for situations like this but it will require a high number of passengers.

Southwest Airlines offers a formal meetings program for corporate meetings and conventions with a minimum of 150 Travelers through SWABIZ. To make Southwest Airlines the official airline of your meeting and find out if you are eligible, visit  www.swabiz.com  and submit a Meetings Agreement Request form.

The group check-in process

The check-in process is a little bit different for Southwest Group Travel and the exact process for check in would depend on if you are flying on a domestic flight or international flight. Basically if your flight is a domestic flight you can check in the group or specific passengers but if you’re checking in for an international flight you will need to check in each passenger one at a time.

Below are the specific instructions provided by Southwest.

Domestic Groups

1. Go to  southwest.com  and click “Check In” to reserve your boarding positions.  Enter the confirmation number and first and last name of any one of your travelers. 2. You have the option to either check in the entire Group, or select specific Passengers. 3. The names of successfully checked in Passengers along with their boarding positions will begin to populate on the screen one at a time.  Please note: Certain Passengers may not be eligible for online check in and must proceed to the ticket counter. 4. Once you arrive at the airport proceed to the ticket counter to receive your boarding passes.

International Groups

 1. Go to  southwest.com  and click ‘Check In’ to reserve your boarding positions. Enter the confirmation number and first and last name of any one of the travelers. 2. You will only be able to check in one Passenger at a time.  3. A valid passport and emergency contact information will be needed to complete the check in process. 4. Repeat steps 1 – 3 for each International Passenger.  4. Once you arrive at the airport proceed to the ticket counter to receive your boarding passes.

Southwest Group Travel boarding

If you are not familiar with the Southwest boarding process it works like this. You are given a boarding pass that falls into one of three groups: A, B, or C. You are then issued a number within that group and that is where you will line up to board the plane. There are no assigned seats so all seats are open to everyone. Read more about the boarding process here .

Traveling with a group, you might be tempted to save seats on the plane. But you should be aware that many people frown upon saving seats on Southwest. My advice would be to head to the very back of the plane where people are more forgiving about you saving seats.

You might be wondering about Southwest EarlyBird which is a service that allows you to check in automatically and secure a better boarding position for a fee of $15 to $25. Unfortunately,  Southwest EarlyBird is not available to tickets purchased as part of a Group itinerary.

Southwest Group Travel baggage fees

Southwest will allow you to travel with your first two checked bags for free. The applies even when traveling as a group. If you are wondering about the fees for additional bags or for oversized bags then click here for more on the Southwest baggage fee policy.

The Southwest Group Travel program can be a great way to fly with a large group because you can save money and get added flexibility with name changes. However, you will likely have to deal with really long wait times on the phone and will have to go without some benefits like EarlyBird and Pre-check.

If you’re dealing with a smaller group I would suggest comparing the prices of booking them individually to help people save money but it could all just depend on the route.

A group trip consists of at least 10 passengers travelling together and who are entitled to seats. Please note that children under the age of 12 years may only travel if accompanied by adults.

Bookings for a group who are starting their journey in Germany, Austria or Switzerland can be requested online using the above form.

If your departure airport is not in one of these three countries, please contact a travel agency you trust to make your group booking. Travel agencies are kindly requested to contact their relevant Lufthansa service team.

The price for a group is calculated independently of the lowest online price. It is calculated individually according to capacity and can be higher than the single seat fare sold online. The number of seats available in the aircraft decreases per booking. It may therefore be the case that a seat is still available for an individual passenger at a lower price, but not to a group because of the number of travellers.

To book a train ticket, please contact the Lufthansa Service Center or a travel agency. You will receive two separate DB pick-up numbers (one for your outbound journey and one for your return journey). Under each number a single trip Rail&Fly ticket is deposited for you at the DB-Fernverkehrsautomat (Deutsche Bahn long-distance ticket machine). If you are travelling with several other people, each person will receive one pick-up number for their outbound journey and one for their return journey. With these numbers you can print out your ticket at any DB long-distance ticket machine from 72 hours before the start of your journey. There are more than 3,500 of these DB ticket machines throughout Germany. You can easily find out where your nearest one is located via bahn.de/railandfly.

You can find further information about Rail&Fly services under the following link (Rail&Fly arriving by train).

Booking flights for groups

Booking Flights for Groups: What You Need to Know

Group flights have become an increasingly popular option for travelers looking to explore the world together with friends, family members, or colleagues. These flights are specifically designed for groups of 10 or more, offering unique benefits such as discounted airfare and more.

These are beneficial for large groups such as family reunions, student trips, business retreats, and even sports events. In addition, they can also provide an enhanced, stress-free travel experience to group members.

If you’re living in the United States, you’ll find several major airlines offer services on booking flights for groups, with a dedicated team ready to help with flight bookings, itinerary planning, and special requests. Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, United, and American Airlines are among the carriers that extend their group travel options to reduce the complexities involved in coordinating group trips. These airlines often provide exclusive amenities and tailored services to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable journey for all participants.

Here’s a guide on booking flights for groups for those looking to embark on a shared travel adventure!

Cost savings

Flexibility, easy planning, who are best suited for group flights, use a travel agency, book in advance, prepare the group’s information, united airlines, american airlines, delta airlines, southwest airlines, special pricing and discounts, fare rules and deposits, name changes and flexibility, fees and charges, group contract and policies, getting a quote, group booking for flights: pros and cons.

Booking flights for groups

Group flights refer to a travel arrangement in which a group of individuals fly together on the same flight with a common destination. Typically, airlines consider a group as 10 or more passengers traveling together. These groups can include families, friends, corporate teams, or even event attendees who require similar flight itineraries.

Here are the main benefits of group booking for flights:

One of the primary benefits of group flights is the possibility of special pricing and flexible payment options. Depending on the airline, groups of 10 or more might be eligible for discounted fares as well as other considerations such as priority boarding or reserved seating.

For instance, American Airlines guarantees fare rates for groups of 10 or more, allowing booking up to 11 months in advance and making name changes up to 48 hours before departure. Southwest is known for offering impressive amenities to group travelers, including special discounts and versatile payment options.

Group flights also tend to have more flexible terms and conditions, which can be particularly beneficial for large groups such as business retreats, family reunions, or student trips. For instance, some airlines may allow you to hold seats without specifying the travelers’ names immediately, providing added convenience and flexibility.

Another advantage of group flights comes from the convenience factor. Organizing group travel can often involve coordinating multiple, complicated logistics. This can be streamlined by working with travel agents or specialized platforms that cater to group travel booking. These professionals can handle all the arrangements and ensure that everyone in the group arrives at their destination safely and on time.

  • Higher individual costs : It’s important to note that getting a group deal from an airline is not always the cheapest option — the airfare per flight on a group booking deal can sometimes be higher. Therefore, it’s advisable to compare prices before making a decision.
  • Limited flight options : Group bookings may limit your flight options as airlines often have specific flights designated for group travel.
  • Inflexibility: Changes in group bookings can be challenging. For example, if one person in the group cancels, it might affect the entire group’s booking or rate.
  • Payment complexity: Coordinating payments among a large group can be complicated and time-consuming.

Group flight booking

Booking flights for groups is an excellent choice for various occasions and situations. They offer numerous benefits ranging from better coordination to specialized deals and pricing.

In this section, we’ll explore the advantages of group flights especially for certain passenger groups:

  • Group Trips : Group flights present the perfect solution for group trips, such as family reunions, friends’ vacations, or organized tours. By booking flights together, everyone in the group can be accommodated on the same flight, reducing the risk of individuals being split across different flights. Furthermore, group flights provide a sense of companionship and enhance the overall travel experience.
  • Meetings : Business meetings, conferences, and corporate events can benefit from group flights, as they allow for coordinated travel. This ensures that all attendees arrive at the destination simultaneously for better time management and organization. Additionally, airlines such as United Airlines offer tailored pricing and services for groups of ten or more, which can result in savings for businesses.
  • Sports Teams : Group flights prove to be a cost-effective and convenient choice for sports teams. The team members can travel together, ensuring everyone’s schedule aligns, and the camaraderie amongst the team is maintained. Moreover, specialized group-based deals or discounts may be available, further reducing the costs of travel for team events and competitions.

Group flights offer numerous benefits to those who choose them. They allow for better coordination, potential cost savings, and strengthen the sense of unity and camaraderie among group members, making them an optimal choice for sports teams, meetings, and group trips.

Tips when booking group flights

When booking group flights, the easiest way is to call an airline directly. Airlines often have a specialized department that handles group bookings. However, dealing with this can be cumbersome, in which case you may opt to book thru a travel agency instead.

A travel agency can help you save a lot of time and money especially for large groups.

When planning group travel, it’s essential to book flights well in advance. Airlines often allow you to reserve group tickets up to 11 months prior to your desired travel date. This ensures that your group has access to the best possible fares and seat availability.

Take note that during peak travel periods, such as major holidays and popular vacation seasons, group flight availability may be limited. To increase the chance of securing seats and favorable fares for all group members, book flights as early as possible during these busy times.

Before booking for a group flight, prepare the group members’ information and documents in advance so you’re not scrambling during the process.

Once all group details are finalized and deposits have been paid, the airline will issue electronic tickets for each group member. Be sure to verify all passenger information, flight details, and travel itinerary before the ticketing deadline to avoid any last-minute surprises.

For international travels, each group member should individually ensure they meet the entry requirements for their destination, and it may be helpful to compile a list of necessary documents and vaccinations in advance to streamline the process for everyone.

Group flight experiences with different airlines

With their customer-centric approach, they ensure a comfortable and convenient trip with their range of in-flight amenities and seamless group travel management.

The airline also prioritizes group accessibility to their many amenities, such as ample legroom and free in-flight entertainment, ensuring a comfortable and pleasant flight experience.

Additional considerations

Here are the things you should familiarize yourself with when doing group bookings for flights:

Airlines often offer special pricing and discounts for group bookings. Group pricing usually results in savings compared to individual ticket prices, allowing your group to travel more cost-effectively. Additionally, some airlines may provide additional perks, like upgrades or priority boarding, based on group size and travel needs.

When booking group flights, be sure to remain informed about the specific fare rules and deposit requirements. Each airline has its own policies and the minimum number of passengers required to qualify for group fares. In order to secure these fares, you may be asked to pay a deposit. This deposit can vary based on factors such as destination, group size, and other potential restrictions.

Group bookings often come with added flexibility in terms of name changes and cancellations. It’s not uncommon for airlines to offer at least one free name change per ticket, which can be particularly helpful in case any group members need to cancel or alter their travel plans. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the specific change fees and cancellation policies for the airline you’ve chosen.

It’s important to be aware of the fees and charges associated with booking group flights. These may include booking fees, taxes, or any additional charges for services like baggage, seat assignments, and in-flight amenities.

Make sure to review the terms and conditions while planning, and communicate any applicable charges to group members in advance, particularly if they are responsible for handling individual payments.

When booking group travel, a group contract may be provided by the airline, outlining specific terms and policies for your flights. This may include information on payment deadlines, reservation changes, or cancellation penalties. It’s crucial to carefully review the contract and its corresponding policies to ensure a seamless and trouble-free experience for the entire group.

To obtain an accurate quote for your group flight, consider utilizing the services of a dedicated travel agency like Golden Rule Travel that specializes in group airfare. Provide details such as travel dates, destinations, and desired number of tickets, and be sure to inquire about any potential group discounts or bulk rates.

Group flights have lots of benefits. We hope this article on group booking for flights helped you in deciding whether you should book individually or as a group for a trip.

Commercial aviation is one of the world’s most fascinating sectors. As a subset of leisure, tourism, and logistics industries, airlines have never been more crucial than today. The great COVID-19 outbreak of 2019-2022 has more or less brought the world to its knees in dramatic fashion.

A global pandemic has translated into economic seizures, especially due to the massive reduction in travel and therefore aviation. Despite aviation being a low-margin business due to the volatility of oil, high CapEx, and several different factors, it is still one of the most important businesses in the world.

When an airline is formed, they’ll usually designate a specific city from which its operational tendrils form a web. Hubs have become pervasive throughout aviation. Simply put, it’s much easier to strive for operational optimization if you only have to worry about 1 core city through which you operate flights.

In this guide, we’ll investigate what an airline hub is, why it’s important, and then break all of the major airlines down into their hub cities. Let’s get started.

Emirates hub and spoke route network

According to strategic aviation consultant Stephen Holloway , “An airline hub may be defined as an airport that receives many passengers or as an airport that serves as an operating base of an airline, whether or not the airline allows for connecting traffic.”

The easiest way to describe a hub for a given airline is to attribute the amount of traffic as a percentage of its total traffic. Alternatively, you can also calculate the percentage of flights operated by a particular airline in a specific airport.

There are 2 main operating strategies for airlines:

  • Airlines like Qantas, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and EL AL are some of the best examples of hub and spoke airlines.
  • Airlines like Southwest, Hainan Airlines, Ryanair, and easyJet are some of the best examples of point-to-point airlines

Hub and Spoke versus Point to Point

Generally, smaller planes are used on point-to-point routes due to the lower demand relative to massive hub-and-spoke routes. For example, a point-to-point Hainan Airlines flight from New York City (JFK) to Chengdu (CTU) is operated using a 787-9, and Air China operates a hub-and-spoke route from New York City (JFK) to Beijing (PEK) using a 747-8, which can hold more passengers.

To visualize, check out Etihad’s route network:

Etihad Route Network

Most of Etihad’s flights go through Abu Dhabi. This is consistent with the hub-and-spoke philosophy, which is capable of funneling travelers across the world via its hub in Abu Dhabi.

On the flip-side, let’s look at Hainan Airlines’ international route network below:

Hainan Airlines route map

As you can tell, Hainan Airlines operates several different flights and covers a lot of area with its point-to-point network. That means customers can fly on lesser-known routes like from New York City (JFK) to Chongqing (CKG) without having to inconveniently stop in Beijing (PEK) or Shanghai (PVG).

Bottom Line: An airline hub is advantageous because air transportation can be consolidated into 1 destination, which allows for a greater scale. If an airline can fill larger aircraft easily, it will realize significant cost savings. However, with technological advances from fuel-efficient aircraft and a greater appetite for convenient nonstop flights in the point-to-point model, the hub-and-spoke model is quickly losing favor.

We discussed what hub airports are in the above section, so let’s briefly touch on focus cities. According to the Encyclopedia of Transportation: Social Science and Policy , focus cities are defined as a “ destination from which an airline operates limited point-to-point routes .”

By extension, a focus city appeals to the “local” instead of connecting markets much more than a hub city.

Airline hubs are crucial for numerous things. Since Upgraded Points has always been focused on points and premium cabin travel, we’ll be talking about airline hubs as they relate to these topics.

Knowing which hubs exist for a particular airline will be extremely important in crafting an award itinerary. After all, how can you plan a Cathay Pacific first class award flight without first knowing that Cathay Pacific’s hub is Hong Kong (HKG)?

The other, less obvious reasons why you should care about airline hubs may be as follows:

  • Hub-and-spoke routes can sometimes have the most award availability. Sometimes, it’s the other way around, where the airline’s ultra-premium routes have sufficient revenue demand, thereby drying up award availability.
  • Figuring out where airline hubs are can help you plan a journey with as little time wasted possible actually going through airports and in the air.
  • Airline hubs offer the most operational flexibility. Because most of their flights go through hubs, you can then plan a connecting flight with a convenient schedule.
  • One of the best examples of this would be comparing an itinerary on Delta nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to Paris (CDG). Award availability will be rare/expensive, but if you choose to go from Los Angeles (LAX) to Salt Lake City (SLC) and then to Paris (CDG), you’ll find huge award availability.
  • One other example would be comparing an itinerary on American Airlines nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to Hong Kong (HKG). Award availability will be nearly impossible to find, but if you start your search in Phoenix (PHX) or San Diego (SAN) and go through Los Angeles (LAX) and then finally to Hong Kong (HKG), you’ll see a ton of award availability that isn’t bookable with the nonstop option. This is known as married segment availability .

Now that we’ve demonstrated why you should care about figuring out key airline hubs globally as well as their associated airlines, let’s get into our list of the top airlines in the world and discuss where they hold hub operations.

All of these images and maps were provided via searches on Great Circle Mapper , so keep that in mind. Additionally, all airline hubs are shown as red dots, while all airline focus cities are shown as blue dots .

The organization of these airlines hereafter is in alphabetical order.

Kerala-based travel services operator Alhind Group receives nod to start an airline | Exclusive

Alhind group is looking to start alhind air operations by the end of this year after receiving the air operator certificate from the directorate general of civil aviation (dgca)..

Profile image

Kerala-based travel services operator Alhind Group has received the Civil Aviation Ministry's initial nod to start an airline — Alhind Air. This takes the group's ambition to enter India's fast-growing aviation sector a step closer.

Alhind Group is looking to start airline operations by the end of this year after receiving another important clearance, the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

A top official of the group told CNBC-TV18 that the proposed airline will start flying with three ATR-72 turboprop planes with an initial investment of ₹ 200 crore to ₹ 500 crore as it adds more planes into the fleet.

"We will have five ATR planes in total to fly on regional routes. We have secured all support from Cochin International Airport for our operations," the official told CNBC-TV18.

CNBC-TV18 reported on August 2 that Alhind Group was all set to launch an airline.

Alhind Air plans to initially fly on regional routes in the southern part connecting Cochin with Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, among other routes with the ATR planes.

The upcoming airline is looking to expand its operations across India and operate as a domestic carrier as it adds narrow-body passenger planes to its fleet.

Alhind Air aims to launch international flights after the fleet size increases to over 20 planes within two years after it commences operations.

"It's a ₹ 2,000-crore, long-term project, we are in talks with leasing companies for ATR and narrow-body planes as well as Airbus and Boeing for new planes," the official said, adding that the group has already started hiring people in the leadership roles.

Once this process is completed, the exercise for hiring pilots, cabin crew, engineers and other ground staff will start, the official said.

Alhind Group is one of the leading players in the travel and tourism industry in India and abroad.

The group which is also the General Sales Agent (GSA) for many airlines claims to have a turnover of over ₹ 20,000 crore and more than 130 offices in India and overseas.

Alaska Air Group, Inc. (ALK): A Good Airline Stock To Buy According To Short Sellers

W e recently compiled a list of the 10 Best Airline Stocks To Buy According To Short Sellers . In this article, we are going to take a look at where Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK) stands against the other airline stocks.

The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on travel caused an alarming 54.1% drop in the airline industry's revenue from $838 billion in 2019 to $384 billion in 2020, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). However, the industry has subsequently risen substantially, with annual revenue estimated to reach $996 billion by 2024, representing 18.8% growth from 2019 and a 159% recovery from the pandemic low.

On the other hand, the Business Research Company projects that the global airline market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.2%, from $523.04 billion in 2023 to $566.06 billion in 2024. Whereas in the upcoming years, a significant expansion in the size of the airline industry is anticipated at a CAGR of 8.8% to $794.61 billion in 2028. According to the aforementioned research, the increase in the number of air passengers is fueling the growth of the airline industry. For example, in March 2023, the US government's Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that the number of passengers carried by US airlines rose by 30% from 658 million in 2021 to 853 million in 2022. Regionally, Asia-Pacific was the world's largest airline market in 2023, and it is also projected to be the fastest-growing region in the airline market study throughout the forecast year.

Furthermore, the booming airline market is also being driven by the growing tourism market. For instance, in December 2022, the New Zealand government ministry, the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, reported that tourism spending in the country hit $26.5 billion, up 2.7% from $704 million a year before. Most importantly, arrivals of foreign visitors to New Zealand jumped by 335.3% to 229,370.

Consumer confidence in leisure travel is still high . Jamie Baker, analyst for aircraft leasing and U.S. airlines states: "Our prevailing thesis is that premium and international demand for air travel remains in the lead." Nonetheless, limited capacity and lower costs are two challenges that airlines around the globe are dealing with. On the other hand, in China, the rate of domestic passenger yield is anticipated to stay high, while the rate of outbound tourism is projected to increase in the upcoming months. The IATA has raised the industry's projected profit for 2024 in Asia Pacific by almost 18%. According to its longer-term projections, Asia Pacific will have the fastest global growth in air travel demand, with a passenger CAGR of 5.3% over the next 20 years.

Meanwhile, the US airlines have emphasized debt reduction, which should assist in strengthening their balance sheets and credit ratings over time. The domestic industry reported a total debt of $143 billion at the end of 2023, a decline of around 15% from 2021 levels. Investors who keep a long-term perspective and diversify their portfolios may gain from the industry's revival and expansion in the future years.

Methodology:

We sifted through holdings of airline ETFs and online rankings to form an initial list of 20 airline stocks. Then we selected the 10 stocks that had the lowest percentage of their shares shorted. The stocks are ranked in ascending order of the lowest percentage of their shares shorted. We've also mentioned the number of hedge funds that have long positions in these stocks as of Q2, 2024.

Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter's strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points. Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE: ALK )

% of shares shorted: 6.29%

Number of Hedge Fund Holders: 30

When it comes to the number of scheduled passengers it carries, Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK) is among the " biggest airlines worldwide ." Alaska and Horizon are the two airlines that the company runs. McGee Air Services, a provider of aviation services, is also included. Three segments comprise its operations: Mainline, Regional, and Horizon.

Offering unique discounts on more than 900,000 hotels and vacation rentals worldwide, the airline company and Expedia Group have recently partnered to launch Stays by Alaska Vacations.

Last month, Analyst Andrew Didora of Bank of America Securities maintained his Buy rating on Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK), citing the company's solid financial standing and advantageous position in the market.

The airline's efficient cost control allowed its second-quarter 2024 EPS to outperform Wall Street consensus and Didora's projections. The company's revenue expectations are still strong despite a less optimistic third-quarter EPS estimate, suggesting resilience and possible growth against anticipated seasonal decreases.

One of the biggest airlines worldwide, ALK has an attractive value, trading at $35.72, close to historically low levels, and its strong West Coast network helps make up for its exposure to challenges from excessive capacity elsewhere.

Analyst Didora's optimistic assessment is supported by the strengthening domestic revenue environment, even with the anticipated higher costs resulting from a new flight attendant agreement. Rather than a decline in the company's fundamentals, the recent labor agreement is the reason for the tightened full-year earnings guidance. This cautious approach is anticipated to be transitory, preserving optimism in the airline and supporting the possibility of stock appreciation.

Analysts are bullish on the stock. Barclays also gave the company a Buy rating with a $58.00 price objective. Citing solid profitability, strategic moves like the Hawaiian Airlines acquisition, and favorable margin performance, Citi analyst Stephen Trent kept a Buy rating on Alaska Air with a $54.00 price objective. Bank of America Securities has also given the stock a Buy rating with a $50.00 price objective, stressing its competitive position and growth prospects.

ALK is one of the Best Airline Stocks To Buy According To Short Sellers with only 6.29% of shares shorted. ALK has hedge fund sentiments of 30 in Q2 2024. Ken Griffin's Citadel Investment Group is the largest shareholder in the company, with 3,905,807 shares worth $157.79 million, as of Q2, 2024.

Overall ALK ranks 7th on our list of the best airline stocks to buy according to short sellers. While we acknowledge the potential of ALK as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter time frame. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than ALK but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the cheapest AI stock .

Ukraine war latest: Ukraine keeping close eye on Belarus border as troops amass

Russia has launched several air attacks on Ukraine this week, costing Moscow a reported £1.1bn. Last night, Kyiv came under drone attack for the third night in four days, with debris injuring people and damaging buildings.

  • Reporting by Mark Wyatt

Ukraine says it's keeping a close eye on its border with Belarus after a build-up of troops there in recent days.

Kyiv's foreign ministry accused Minsk last week of concentrating a "significant number of personnel" in the Gomel region near Ukraine's northern border "under the guise of exercises".

It swiftly warned Belarusian officials not to make "tragic mistakes under Moscow's pressure" and withdraw its forces.

The Institute for the Study of War said Belarus's troop deployment was likely intended to divert Ukrainian soldiers from other fronts.

It also assessed that Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko was "extremely unlikely to risk combat with Ukraine that could weaken his regime".

Speaking on television today, a spokesperson for Ukraine's border guard service said it had detected no immediate threats on the border, but that Ukrainian troops were keeping it constantly monitored.

"This is tens of kilometres from our border, at different points – different distances," said Andriy Demchenko.

"What is happening on the territory of Belarus is actively monitored by intelligence units, the ministry of defence and the state border service in order to understand how the situation is changing, how threatening it can be for Ukraine.

"So that all components of our defence forces, which strengthen this direction, have the opportunity to react in time to any actions."

Ukraine is calling on the civilian population in its eastern city of Pokrovsk to evacuate as Russian troops draw closer to its outskirts.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on what could happen next.

Today, Malcolm asks:

How serious is the situation in Pokrovsk? If the city falls to Russian forces, what are the strategic consequences for Ukraine?

Military analyst Sean Bell says...

It is very difficult to provide clarity over the tactical progress of the war given the relative paucity of detailed information about progress, challenges and opportunities.

However, it appears likely that Vladimir Putin's near-term objective of his "special military operation" is to secure Crimea, the Donbas and the land bridge between the two areas.

This summer, Russia's main effort appears to have been securing the final component of the Donbas, and despite the much-publicised casualty rate being suffered by Moscow's forces - more than 1,000 casualties a day - Russia continues to make slow but steady progress.

Pokrovsk is a strategically important logistics and transport hub for Ukrainian forces in the region, and Russian forces are now reported to be only six miles away from the town, leading the Ukrainians to evacuate the civilian population.

The Russian president knows that it is very difficult to maintain momentum during the winter months, so he has perhaps 10 to 12 weeks available to achieve his objectives before the winter weather settles in.

If Russian forces can seize Pokrovsk before the winter, it is possible that Mr Putin will indicate he is ready to negotiate an end to the conflict.

Depending on the outcome of the forthcoming US presidential elections, that raises the prospect of Mr Putin being rewarded for his brutal invasion of Ukraine, which would have profound implications for global security.

Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region will soon enter its fourth week, with around 500 square miles of territory captured so far, according to the head of Kyiv's military.

Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Tuesday that around 100 settlements, including the town of Sudzha, were now under Ukraine's control.

In one of his evening addresses this week, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said troops were still expanding their territory in the region.

Here, we look at some key images from the start of the invasion into Kursk.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine will not forgive Russia "for a single destroyed Ukrainian life" as the country marks the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of Ukraine.

The holiday marks the 10th anniversary of the battle of Ilovaisk, where hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers were killed by Russian troops as they began to withdraw from the encircled town.

"This was a planned, cynical Russian crime that Ukraine will never forget and will not leave unpunished," Mr Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.

"Today, Ukraine honours the memory of all its defenders. All those who fought for our state, for Ukrainian independence and sacrificed the most precious thing – their lives.

"And we will not forgive Russia for a single destroyed Ukrainian life."

Ukraine was forced to disconnect several nuclear power units from the grid on Monday after Russia's widespread drone and missile attacks on the country.

Kyiv's mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency has said the attack was intended to paralyse the operation of the power generation facilities of Ukraine.

It added that the attacks posed a significant risk to the stable operation of nuclear facilities.

As a result of the attack, three out of four power units of the Rivne nuclear power plant were disconnected from the grid, it said.

Another nuclear power plant, the South Ukrainian, was also forced to decrease its output "due to fluctuations in the national power grid".

A fighter jet from Belarus attempted to shoot down a Russian drone that flew into the country's airspace this morning, a monitoring group has said.

The Belarusian Hajun group said this is "probably the first recorded case of a Belarusian Air Force fighter attempting to destroy a military target in the sky".

The group claims a Russian drone entered Belarus' airspace at around 3.30am local time (1.30am UK time), with two explosions heard in the country's Yelsk district around 30 minutes later.

The drone was said to be a Shahed, also known as a "kamikaze drone".

Sky News has not independently verified these claims.

For context: Belarus and Russia share a land border and the two are considered close allies.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Belarus allowed Moscow to stage part of the invasion from its territory.

In the wake of Ukraine's advances into the Russian region of Kursk this month, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko he had stationed nearly a third of the country's armed forces along its Ukrainian border.

Ukraine's allies must give Kyiv permission to use weapons to hit military targets in Russia "sooner rather than later", says one of the country's MPs.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked Western leaders to let Ukraine use long-range weapons on Russian territory.

During his nightly address yesterday, the president said such restrictions being lifted would "help us to end the war as soon as possible in a fair way for Ukraine and the world as a whole".

This week, Sir Keir Starmer said there had been "no new decisions" on the matter, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz saying the same yesterday in Berlin.

Speaking on Sky News this morning, Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik said the situation across the country remains difficult and urged Kyiv's allies to speed up their decision-making process.

She said: "It seems for us that the only way to defend our people and defend our territories is to be able to hit Russian missiles and Russian planes at the start of their launches, not when they are approaching our energy infrastructure or our homes.

"And this is why we need the ability to use long-range weapons to destroy Russia's ability to attack us.

"It's a pure act of defence. And we hope that, sooner rather than later, our allies will understand that."

Russia is continuing its advances in the Donbas region as it seeks to capture the key city of Pokrovsk.

Civilians are being evacuated from the city, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning the situation is "difficult".

The map below shows Russia's gains on Ukrainian territory.

On the eastern front, Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region is ongoing.

There have been Russian reports this week that Ukraine has attempted to break into the neighbouring Belgorod region, with Moscow's defence ministry saying the situation "remains difficult but under control".

The map below shows Ukraine's gains on Russian territory since its invasion of the border region began on 6 August.

A lioness with shell shock rescued from Ukraine has taken her first steps outside at a sanctuary in Kent.

Yuna has psychological issues and coordination problems after debris landed near her enclosure in January, according to the Big Cat Sanctuary.

The three-year-old arrived at the sanctuary on 17 August but stayed inside her enclosure for a week before finally venturing outside.

She's now beginning to get used to her new life in the UK, feeling grass underneath her paws for the first time after spending much of her life confined to a small space on a concrete floor.

The sanctuary said before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, she had been kept at a private home and was found malnourished and with severe concussion.

Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure is taking the country "closer and closer" to a total blackout, says one of its MPs.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has caused £13.5bn of damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure, the Kyiv School of Economics Institute estimates.

Speaking on Sky News, Kira Rudik, who lives in Kyiv, says the city's homes do not have electricity for the "majority of the day".

"Even right now, I'm speaking to you all being on a diesel generator," she said.

"It's terrifying that still, by this point, we are unable to protect us from those vicious attacks in full. And Russia keeps bringing us closer and closer to that total blackout.

"How we are going to survive the winter is unclear right now, because the weather outside is still good. But once it gets colder and people start to consume more energy, we will not be able to handle it."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in June that Russia had destroyed 80% of Ukraine's thermal energy generation and a third of its hydro generation.

But this week, he declined to elaborate on what further damage Monday's strikes had caused.

"I don't really like energy PR," he said. "It's not very helpful when the enemy knows what damage they have done.

"Let the information about the condition of our energy facilities and what we are currently doing there be kept quiet."
