I have a 2014 Tri Glide and I thought I knew a lot about it. BUT Guess that's all wrong:whiteflag. I can't for the life of me figure where it's at and how to set it ? Can someone shed some light on this for me ? Thanks
Rick, the only places I have seen reset or select switches on these is on the faring next to the speedometer (around the 7 o'clock pos.) or on the side of the trim panel on top of the gas tank. Should be something about it in the owner's manual.
If its anything like my 2014 Limited, there is a switch on the front side (not facing you while seated) of the left switch assembly. Easy reach with your left index finger and each press scrolls thru total miles, trip A, trip B, miles to empty, then back to total miles. At least by my memory and on my bike. Hope this helps.
Thanks guys I found it. It's on TOP of the left handle Bar right on top of it. All you have to do is with your left index finger is push it down to reset it.Gives you 2 choices. You guys are great Thanks again. Now I really feel stupied :wink
Yep. 2014 reset button is on the left switch housing. Has a circle looking symbol on the button.

A 2022 Tucson Limited in crystal white with a gray inside has a new owner. There is no mention of a trip odometer in the VOLUMINOUS manuals, and I can’t find one on the screens in my car, either. There is no access to a trip odometer to calculate the mileage for a single journey, even if the lower left and lower right display total miles and distance to empty, respectively.
Could Hyundai have forgotten to include this (along with a rear wiper)? I appreciate any support.

How can I re-set my car’s mileage?
Can a vehicle’s miles be reset? No. In reality, tampering with an automobile’s odometer is prohibited, especially if the goal is to mislead prospective buyers or sellers about the vehicle’s actual state. One of the key elements considered when evaluating a vehicle and establishing its sale value is its mileage.
A trip odometer is what?
trip odometer, also known as trip odometers An odometer component that allows its readout to be reset to zero can record the distance covered during a brief excursion.
What distinguishes an odometer from a trip meter?
Odometer rollover, which occurs when an odometer or trip meter resets to zero after reaching the maximum value, Digital clocks might not roll over.
There is usually a trip meter in newer vehicles. Since a trip meter, unlike an odometer, may be reset at any time throughout a trip, it is possible to record the distance covered during any specific trip or segment of a trip. It used to be a wholly mechanical device, but the majority of current cars now have electronic versions. There are frequently many trip meters on many modern vehicles. The maximum value that most mechanical trip meters will display is 999.9. A frequent application of the trip meter is to reset it to zero at each instruction in a series of driving directions so that one is certain when they have arrived at the next turn. This makes it very simple to precisely track the energy efficiency of the car.
What place does the odometer have?
Owning an automobile necessitates maintenance and periodic inspection of specific components. The odometer, which shows how many miles a car has covered in its lifetime, is a crucial measure to keep an eye on. Although reading an odometer is very simple, if you have a more recent car with plenty of bells and whistles, such as a digital gauge cluster, it may be challenging to get the proper information. In order for you to use this tool to keep on top of your maintenance plan, we conducted research on where to find the odometer in your car and how to interpret what it is telling you.
Look for the little rectangle with typically five or six numbers in it to determine the reading of an odometer. It usually stands close to the speedometer. It might be digital if your car is more recent. If your car is more basic or older, the stats will be mechanical and physical. Simply note the number that is now visible once you’ve found it. This represents the total distance the vehicle has driven throughout its lifetime.
You undoubtedly have more inquiries regarding this tiny device now that you’ve located the odometer and noted the current reading. Please read on for more information about how odometers function, their significance, and their degree of accuracy in determining your vehicle’s mileage.

Whether you’re considering selling your current vehicle or searching for a used one, the subject of how to reset miles on a car may be on your mind. After all, the mileage on a vehicle is a significant determinant of its value. This information also helps an owner know when to perform maintenance. So, in this article, we’ll discuss all the critical issues relating to odometers, mileage, and cars.
What’s an Odometer?
An odometer is a device that measures the distance traveled by a vehicle. In the U.S., this data is measured in miles (mileage), while in other countries, the distance is measured in kilometers (kilometrage). Older cars use a set of gears to count wheel rotations (scaled to miles or kilometers) and transfer this information to a mechanical odometer. Newer vehicles use a digital odometer and a computerized system to report mileage.

What’s a Trip Odometer?
A trip odometer is used to record mileage for a particular journey. In the case of a trip odometer, asking, “How to reset miles on a car?” means you can quickly turn the reading back to zero with the push of a button (check the car’s owner manual for specific instructions). Most modern cars have “Trip A” and “Trip B” settings.
Can the Main Odometer Be Set Back to Zero?
Not legally. The odometer must always reflect the actual use of the vehicle. It violates federal law to tamper with the odometer to hide a car’s actual mileage. While odometer rollback was more common in the days of mechanical units, altering a digital odometer is more sinister because there’s less evidence.
On top of state and civil penalties, the threat of multiple years in federal prison is a strong deterrent against widespread odometer tampering. The situation is more likely to occur with small, unscrupulous dealer operations or an individual seeking to boost a car’s value. Remember that disconnecting an odometer so it doesn’t record mileage is also considered tampering. So, the short answer to “How to reset miles on a car?” You don’t.
Do Odometers Go Bad?
It’s rare, but it happens. With older cars, the sending unit on the wheel or the odometer itself may malfunction and prevent the accurate recording of mileage. On newer vehicles, the digital display in the instrument panel can fail. Repairs are possible, but this task is best left to professionals familiar with the legal requirements.
When feasible, the qualified mechanic will move the current mileage information onto the replacement unit (common with digital systems but harder to do with mechanical setups). Reputable odometer repair businesses, sometimes called meter shops, will frequently require access to old and new odometers to ensure proper and accurate repair.

If you’re ready to start shopping for a used car and reliability is a priority for you, take a look at our list of the top 10 most reliable used sedans on the market today.
Does a Replacement Engine Reset the Odometer?
No. The odometer is a record of use for the entire car. So, a vehicle with a replacement engine should have mileage that reflects things from day one. Even in the case of a brand-new engine, the odometer should reflect the original information.
Can a Digital Odometer Be Reset?
Unfortunately, yes. In fact, tampering with digital odometer systems is arguably more effective because it’s harder to spot. The display can be changed, or the relevant memory chip can be reprogrammed or replaced. However, mileage data is stored in other vehicle systems, like the powertrain control module, so an experienced automotive technician will know where to look for the correct information.
How Can I Tell If a Car Has an Odometer That’s Been Reset?
It comes down to a lot of detective work. First, begin with the obvious. Always check the vehicle history report (CARFAX or AutoCheck, for example). Often, an odometer or mileage issue will get reported here. These accounts aren’t perfect, but consider this information the first line of defense. Note that vehicle history reports can go back as far as 1981.
Next, perform a physical inspection of the car. Does the instrument panel appear to be tampered with? Check if the odometer display is misaligned or if screws are missing from that general area of the dashboard.
At the same time, consider what you know about the car. A 12-year-old car with only 50,000 miles might be a great find, but don’t take things at face value. For example, check out the accelerator and brake pedals for excessive wear beyond what the odometer indicates. The floor mat and carpeting below the pedals may tell you the same thing. Look for other tell-tale signs of extensive use, like a worn-down steering wheel and gear-shift lever.
In addition, you’ll want to see how the paperwork matches up. Review the certificate of title. And ideally, this will be an original document, as rip-off artists can use replacement titles to mask original miles. The title certificate will provide a baseline mileage number. See how it compares with the odometer.
Suppose you’re buying a car brand from a franchised dealer (in other words, a Honda dealer selling a used Honda). In that case, the vehicle’s complete history should be available from the manufacturer. Analyze the car’s repair and maintenance records, which always have mileage information.
With all this information at hand, compare the mileage readings. Do these details make sense? Are there any gaps or conflicting reports? If something doesn’t add up, skip the car and look elsewhere.
Valid Reasons for Resetting an Odometer
Although illegal in many places, there are legitimate reasons for odometer adjustments, but they’re generally limited and strictly regulated. Here are scenarios where adjustments might be necessary:
- Instrument Cluster Replacement or Repair : If a vehicle’s instrument cluster fails and needs to be replaced or repaired, the new or repaired cluster’s odometer might need to be adjusted to reflect the vehicle’s actual mileage. This is a legitimate reason for the odometer adjustment.
- Odometer Display Malfunction : In cases where the odometer display is malfunctioning (e.g., digital displays showing incorrect figures), correcting the display to show the correct mileage is necessary and legitimate.
- Manufacturer Recalls : Occasionally, a manufacturer recall might involve odometer correction if a known issue affects the vehicle’s mileage display. Authorized dealerships would carry out such corrections to ensure accuracy.
- Pre-delivery Mileage Correction : Sometimes, a new vehicle may show a few miles on the odometer due to being driven within the factory area or dealership. If an error in these initial miles is recorded, a correction might be made before the vehicle is delivered to the customer.
The process involves strict documentation, disclosure, and authorization requirements in all legitimate cases.
HOW MANY SPARK PLUGS DOES A DIESEL ENGINE HAVE?
The answer to this question isn’t as simple as you’d expect. Let’s look explore the difference between gas and diesel engines and explore just how many spark plugs a diesel engine actually has .
Should I Buy a Car with a Reset Odometer?
It depends. Cars with known odometer issues usually have substantially less pricing than comparably unaffected vehicles. Taking advantage of the savings can be tempting, but what are you getting yourself into? Someone knowing how to reset miles on a car did this for a reason. Is it simply to boost resale value? Or is it masking the need for inevitable repair work such as a transmission rebuild or major engine service?
Yes, you’ll save money, but you could be hit with an expensive repair bill down the road. Also, consider how the resale will be affected when you want to sell or trade in the car. Determine your priorities: lower cost now versus future uncertainty.
Car Odometer Frequently Asked Questions
What is the normal reading for an odometer.
There’s no such thing as normal or standard odometer readings. Depending on the vehicle’s age and how much the owner drives, cars can accumulate up to 250,000 miles or more on the odometer.
Can you reset the miles on a vehicle?
No. Mileage is one of the primary factors during vehicle appraisal and determining its sale value. In fact, it’s illegal to alter or tamper with your car’s odometer, especially intending to deceive potential buyers or sellers about the car’s actual condition.
What is an odometer rollback?
While resetting or tampering with an odometer is illegal, it certainly won’t stop people from doing odometer rollbacks. With the right tools and know-how, the odometer can be rolled back to take hundreds to thousands of miles off the displayed number. Even digital odometers can be altered using special tools.
Is odometer fraud still common today?
Sadly, yes. Since more cars now use digital odometers, it was assumed that odometer fraud incidents would be fewer. However, according to the NHTSA, over 450,000 vehicles sold yearly have fraudulent odometer readings.
What is considered good mileage on a used car?
The average car puts in 10,000-12,000 miles every year. So when you’re looking to buy a used car, check the vehicle’s total mileage and divide the number by the vehicle’s age in years – this is to calculate the car’s annual average. A used car is considered to have good mileage if it has average or below-average numbers. But of course, you should also consider the vehicle’s condition, make and model, accident history, and repair and maintenance records.
How many miles is too much for a used car?
In the past, while it was common to stay away from cars that have high mileage, modern vehicles are now built to last. Although mileage remains a crucial factor in determining a used car’s value, high mileage doesn’t automatically make the car less reliable for transportation. A good rule of thumb is to have the used car inspected by a mechanic if it has more than 100,000 miles on the odometer. Ultimately, the condition, make and model, and vehicle history can give a better picture of the car’s overall condition.

mileage reset button ??? where is it ??
- Add to quote
Ok, newbie hear again, I cannot for the life of me find out how to reset my mileage. I have looked everywhere, nope. this is really frustrating me 🤬. Please help. 😖 Thank you
On the steering wheel. Bottom right hand. Button in between the the up/ down scroll buttons. Takes a long-press to reset. You need to be on the screen that you want to reset (A or B)
I will add, you can go into the menu options and have it auto-reset after fueling. That is what I do but might not be your intentions.
@technist - like you, I use my “A” to reset after each fill up. Use “B” for a variety of other options. Gusto!

READ the manual. That is why it is written.
I assume from the answers so far is that the original question is about resetting the trip miles, not the average fuel mileage display. I would like very much to be able to reset the average fuel mileage calculation on my 2017 RTS G2 (with standard radio), but I cannot see how it can be done. The fuel range display is totally worthless and meaningless when I switch back and forth from towing a trailer to not towing. Resetting the trip meter does not wipe out the old fuel usage data. On my Dodge and Ford vehicles, I can zero out the average fuel mileage and start out with fresh calculations. Can that not be done on a Honda?

Automatic resetting of the journey parameters
Resetting occurs automatically when the maximum value of any of the parameters is exceeded.
Interpreting some of the values displayed after resetting
The values showing average fuel consumption, range and average speed will become more stable and reliable the further you travel after pressing the reset button.
For the first few miles after pressing the reset key you will notice that the range increases as you travel. This range takes into account the average fuel consumption since the last time the reset button was pressed. However, average consumption can decrease when:
- the vehicle stops accelerating;
- the engine reaches its operating temperature (if the engine was cold when the reset key was pressed);
- when driving from an urban area onto the open road.

Trip Counter Reset on Refuel?
- Add to quote
[Edited for clarity of explanation] I've poked around quite a bit and can't seem to find this one. I'd like my trip distance counter to automatically reset when I refuel. Yes, I know I can "just hit the reset button", but that is often overlooked for a variety of reasons. I've owned several other vehicles that have had this option, and it's become my preference. Since the MFA screen has the "display since refuel" option that shows the distance since being refueled (among other things), the vehicle must already a method of "knowing" when it's been refueled. Haven't seen anything in the car settings menu or the green menu, so I'm curious if anyone's figured this one out!
Never heard of this tweak before.

I just reset my trip counter manually each time. As far as automatically I'm wondering if the onboard computer waits to see a full signal from the fuel tank as a reference signal.

My Acura TL would do it automatically but my TLX won't
My V10 does the refuel and since start reset automatically (refuel obviously steered by tank sensor..). If I remember right, the manual reset will do the longterm counter, never tried the other ones

What do you exactly mean by ‘trip counter’ On my 2016 7P V6 diesel (Australia). • The trip distance counter on the instrument cluster is reset by a manual push button. • I can manually scroll through trip computer for 1) distance travelled, 2) average speed and 3) fuel consumption using up and down button on the steering wheel for a) long term average, b) since refuel and c) since start of trip (dunno the ‘start‘, probably that day or ignoring short breaks). I select these with the ‘OK’ button on the steering wheel. Good luck Brett

^Indeed but some cars can sense when the tank had been filled and will automatically reset that for you

I get it. Car systems can clearly work out how much there is in the tank regardless of whether you brim the tank or only do a partial fill, and how you've been driving to give an expected mileage duration. I'd prefer to see miles remaining rather than a fuel guage! I'd like it even better if the miles remaining turned orange at a point of my choosing and then red, also at a point of my choosing, with appropriate bing-bongs at each set point. I'd also prefer a digital speedo in a heads up display on the screen but -obversely - I prefer a circular rev counter with the max revs set at 12 o'clock and with a needle pointer!

Trip meter reset
- Add to quote
So I was searching around and I couldn't find anything on it. I have an 00 Xterra and I just recently started having an issue where the trip meter resets after I shut the rig off. It didn't do it before so I'm not sure what the deal is. The only other issue I have with it is that when it's hot the cluster shuts off, but that not what I'm curious about at the moment since there are plenty of write ups on it. Has anyone had this happen before? What was it?
I've never seen this phenomenon before on any vehicle I have owned, so I am only guessing as to the cause. When you mentioned that the instrument cluster shuts off when it gets hot that could mean a short circuit or a loose connection somewhere. Do you smell anything, like burning plastic while it is in operation? The trip odometers are part of the instruments so they might be affected by this as well, especially if they are resetting when the vehicle is turned off. The instrument cluster might have to be pulled out of the dashboard to check the connections.

Not sure about the Xterra, and especially if it differs between 1st and 2nd Gen, but with cars from other manufacturers, the mileage will continue to accrue even if it isn't displayed due to an issue with the IPC. Then, once the issue is resolved, the correct mileage will appear. So even if you drive it with a broken odometer, if the car runs, it'll still rack up the miles/kilometers/kilometres.
